Champions of Time to Come

Tropes that apply to all of them
  • Adaptation Expansion: All of them had little plot relevance in Breath of the Wild after their respective Divine Beast was taken back, and thus had little screentime to be fleshed out as characters (Teba especially since he isn’t met until right before Link takes down Vah Medoh and it’s the Rito Chief who you speak with to conclude the Vah Medoh main quest). Here they’re not only Promoted to Playable, but get far more screentime in cutscenes and interactions with other characters.
  • Big Damn Heroes: All of them are called from their timeline to rescue their predecessors from the Blight Ganons, which turns the tides in the war.
  • But Now I Must Go: After they have stopped Harbinger Ganon, they return to their proper timeline.
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: Get summoned by Terrako to give the current Champions a fighting chance and fight off the Calamity. They stick around to help until Calamity Ganon is defeated, wherein they return to their normal time.
  • It Has Been an Honor: Both the Future Champions and the Past Champions express this to one another in different ways when the formers are about to return to the future once Calamity Ganon has been resealed.
    • Riju tells Urbosa that she could not be more proud to be of service, with the latter expressing confidence that Riju will lead the Gerudo well.
    • Daruk and Yunobo Fist Bump each other, with Daruk thanking Yunobo for everything and promising to cherish their short time together. Yunobo excitedly promises to do the same as well, telling Daruk that the experience was so much fun.
    • Teba formally tells Revali that the experience with the latter was enlightening for him, and (taking Guardian of Remembrance into account) subtly teases him about having got to see the "face behind the champion", in which Revali grunts in embarrassment.
    • Mipha promises the Adult Sidon that they will meet again. Sidon, though saddened to leave his sister, puts on a brave face for her sake.
  • Kid from the Future: Yunobo and Rijunote  are Daruk's and Urbosa's descendants respectively. Averted for Teba, who is not related to Revali, and Sidon, who, having been a child during the war, is more of a Future Badass.
  • Spanner in the Works: Them saving the Champions prevents the Blight Ganons from taking control of the Divine Beasts, a crucial element in Ganon's victory in the original timeline.
  • Walking Spoiler: Their existence shows that Age of Calamity isn't a simple retelling of Breath of the Wild's backstory after all.

    Sidon

Sidon

Weapon: Dual Spears

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20201119_1510437wjvt.png
Little Prince of the Zora (Child), Winning Smile (Adult)
Voiced by: Kosuke Onishi (Japanese), Jamie Mortellaro (English) Foreign VAs

Mipha's little brother, prince of the Zoras. Relentlessly positive and optimistic.

Sidon's unique action increases the damage he deals with his strong attacks when timed correctly.

For tropes on his appearance in Breath of the Wild, see here.

  • Animal Battle Aura: Sidon will conjure a salmon made from water to surf on as his sprint animation and also to attack enemies, and can also conjure sharks.
  • Animal Motif: Sidon has a strong shark motif, conjuring sharks made of water in some of his attacks. His design also resembles a hammerhead shark.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Inverted. Everything about his presence in the past is all to save his older sister from her untimely demise. His child self displays similar instincts as he tried to protect Mipha from an invading Moblin by charging at it with a Zora spear.
  • Big Little Brother: Sidon appears as an adult alongside his big sister for the first time, showing off the fact that he's over twice her height.
  • Big Sister Worship: He thinks the world of Mipha and will exclaim that he is still far behind her despite his own considerable power.
  • Blood Knight: Exclaims after completing his training that the fighting was "ecstatic". Even as a toddler, he would grab a spear and — despite it being too big for him to properly carry — charge headlong at the strongest monsters he could find.
  • Brother–Sister Team: When paired with Mipha on maps he will express his jubilation to fight alongside her.
  • Classy Cravat: He wears a spiffy cravat with a silver whistle, despite not wearing much clothes otherwise. It's this that causes Mipha to recognize him when he shows up to save her, because his younger self wore it as well.
  • Declaration of Protection: When he arrives to save Mipha, he furiously exclaims to Waterblight Ganon that he won't let it take her away from him again.
  • Determinator: While Mipha is notably exhausted by fighting Waterblight even assisted by Sidon and Link, Sidon continues on and kills an Igneo Talus before also fighting against Fireblight Ganon with Link and the two Gorons.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Getting the most out of Sidon requires practicing the timing of his unique action, and even some of his basic Sheikah rune attacks, such as his Remote Bomb rune, act very unconventional compared to other characters. With that said, mastering the timing of Sidon's button presses will allow him to make quick work of mobs and even stronger enemies.
  • Dual Wielding: He wields twin Ceremonial Tridents in battle. Each is technically weaker than Mipha's Lightscale Trident though, as hers was originally one of a kind, though in gameplay Sidon's damage can numerically equal or exceed Mipha's based on their weapon level.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Despite all the original and future Champions having some experience as either warriors or dealing with Divine Beasts, Sidon stands out for having the most combat experience of any of them, being over 100 years old, and being the only one to have lived through the events of both the Calamity and Breath of the Wild. Of the future Champions he's also the one who fought the Divine Beast at the closest range, swimming up its water spouts to give Link a boost to strike them.
  • Fish People: He is a Zora, a fish person and in his case a hammerhead shark.
  • Friend to All Children: Many of Sidon's quests involve him teaching classes to Zora children to help inspire them to become great warriors themselves.
  • Foil: To his sister Mipha. Mipha is a softspoken Combat Medic while Sidon is a confident fighter.
  • Future Badass: The player first meets him by saving his young child self from a Lynel; they meet him for the second time when his older, Champion self saves Mipha from Waterblight Ganon.
  • Hero-Worshipper: One Challenge mission starts because his idolization of Link is getting him into arguments with Revali.
  • He's All Grown Up: From the perspective of the story as his younger self is shown in Mipha's recruitment mission.
  • Iconic Item: His whistle and cravat. They clue Mipha in to his identity when he appears in Vah Ruta.
  • "Just Frame" Bonus: His unique action lets him conjure up more powerful versions of his strong attacks when the "ZR" button is pressed at the right time (the game calls it "boundless optimism"). The same mechanic also applies to his Remote Bomb rune attack, requiring the player to time their button presses in order to make the most of it.
  • Magic Knight: He uses water magic and spears in equal measure for his attacks.
  • Making a Splash: He controls water much like Mipha for several of his attacks, mostly in the shapes of salmon and sharks, but he will also make waterspouts and waves as well.
  • My Future Self and Me: In the "Guardian of Remembrance" DLC, the adult Sidon rescues Mipha and his child self from attacking monsters, gently admonishing his younger counterpart for recklessly charging into danger while also praising his bravery. In the ending, child Sidon perches on the adult Sidon's shoulder while Mipha affectionately rubs their heads.
  • One-Handed Zweihänder: Spear-type weapons are typically two handed by most who use them. Sidon, however, dual wields two Zora Tridents.
  • Ornamental Weapon: He carries a decorative sword at his waist, but like the tablets in Breath of the Wild described, he is a spearman.
  • The Pollyanna: Sidon's relentless optimism is weaponized, as his unique action is described as being powered by his boundless positivity.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: When using the Special Attack.
Sidon: I won't stand for it! I must not fail!
  • Prongs of Poseidon: Much like Mipha, his signature spears are a pair of tridents fitting for a Royal Fish Person such as himself.
  • Requisite Royal Regalia: Sidon despite not wearing clothes has several chords and epaulettes reminiscent of a military jacket along with a Cool Crown in order to give him a royal bearing.
  • Super Armor: Sidon's enhanced ability grants him this by pressing ZR after completing a full string of strong attacks.
  • Stealth Pun: His water magic breaks up his shark motif to give him a literal Salmon run.
  • Strong and Skilled: In slight contrast to Mipha's relative physical weakness, Sidon is even larger than Daruk and has the physical strength to match. He's also skilled enough to dual-wield tridents, even though each is individually weaker than Mipha's Lightscale Trident. It certainly helps that he has almost 100 years more combat experience than she does.
  • Tail Slap: His conjured shark will do it with a sufficiently powered up attack.
  • Threatening Shark: A heroic example. Sidon strongly resembles a hammerhead shark, and he's a mighty warrior who even summons shark-shaped bursts of water for some of his attacks.
  • Twinkle Smile: Sidon's signature pose involves him saluting with one hand over his chest while grinning as his teeth sparkle. It's even weaponized with using his unique action on its own will pull enemies toward him and damage them.
  • Warrior Prince: He is the prince of the Zora tribe and considers it his royal duty to defend his realm and uphold the honor of his people.

    Yunobo

Yunobo

Weapon: Rock Roast

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20201119_150945z2jgp.png
Voiced by: Yumiko Watanabe (Japanese), Joe Hernandez (English) Foreign VAs

Daruk's grandson. Cowardly, but a kind and gentle Goron.

Yunobo's unique action has him eat a Rock Roast to boost his Protection, surrounding him in a sphere of one of three colors. Using specific strong attacks during this state greatly increases their power.

For tropes on his appearance in Breath of the Wild, see here.

  • Acrofatic: Yunobo is quite agile for his size and can easily give himself airtime by bouncing when doing his goron curl.
  • Adaptational Badass: In Breath of the Wild, of the champion successors Yunobo was the most noncombatant, his only contributions being to let Link use him as a cannonball while Daruk's Protection kept him safe and he cowered in his shield if enemies got close to him until Link beat them. Clearly he's spent some time training and thinking up offensive uses for his powers between then and being called to the past.
  • Apologetic Attacker: He occasionally calls out "I'm sorry!" after landing a combo on an enemy.
  • Assist Character: Yunobo's special attack calls a pair of Goron miners who help him entomb enemies in a coffin of stone.
  • Barrier Warrior: His unique action will have him change the properties of his barrier, which will power up a certain strong attack in his arsenal.
  • Big Eater: Yunobo's weapon is a Rock Roast, and some of his side quests involve him attempting to eat a Pebblit and a Guardian.
  • Cowardly Lion: Yunobo is a Shrinking Violet without much confidence in himself despite his powers, but when push comes to shove he will wade into battle head on.
    Daruk: Stay calm, kiddo!
Yunobo: You're right, sir. I will! If I came here to save you, but you have to save me, then what's the point?!
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Each one of Yunobo's Strong Attacks glow either Yellow, Orange, or Red to indicate which barrier bolsters which Strong Attack.
  • Deadly Forcefield: He can use his barrier offensively after using his rock roast to change its properties. There is default orange, spikes covered red, and a kinetically charged yellow colliding with enemies for increased impact.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He can summon earth to attack enemies for a few of his attacks.
  • Eat Dirt, Cheap: His Power-Up Food that he uses as a weapon are rock roasts, which are actual minerals.
  • Foil: To Daruk, his ancestor. Daruk is a confident older Goron who uses a great sword while Yunobo is unsure of himself and prefers using his bare hands.
  • Full-Contact Magic: He can summon boulders from the ground and then launches them at enemies by punching them and in the process transfer his barrier onto it creating an even more powerful projectile.
  • Fundoshi: Like other Gorons, he wears a fundoshi and mawashi combo to fit in with the race's sumo wrestler aesthetic.
  • Gentle Giant: Yunobo is a towering specimen of a Goron and as strong as he looks, but also a sweet souled coward.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: He fights primarily with his fists.
  • Ground Pound: Yunobo can do this in his Be the Ball form as his strong attack in the air. With the right barrier and if the player wills it, he can repeat it for a very long time.
  • Human Cannonball: Yunobo's Strong VI attack is a giant Call-Back to his role in Breath of the Wild: he unearths a cannon from underground and launch himself from it at enemies with Daruk's Protection up. Naturally, this one resonates with his yellow barrier.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Absolutely giddy to fight alongside the "Great Daruk," to the point where Daruk has to tell him to stop with the formalities.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Yunobo is adept with barriers and hand to hand combat.
  • Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: One of his Weakpoint Smashes will have him unleash a barrage of punches at enemies.
  • Rocket Punch: His strong attack will launch fists of stone at enemies in this manner.
  • Rolling Attack: He has a few of them in his arsenal, growing more powerful with the right barrier activated.
  • Power-Up Food: His "weapon" is a rock roast that appears when he activates his unique action. Either tapping it or holding it allows Yunobo to cycle through three
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: When using the Special Attack.
Yunobo: You're not going to like this!
  • Shaping Your Attacks: When he summons spires of earth from the ground they often have fists on them.
  • Silicon-Based Life: He is a Goron, a rock person from Death Mountain.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: His Heroic Lineage from Daruk has passed on the same Protection ability that his grandfather had.
  • Spin Attack: He has a spinning double lariat, one that is enhanced by his barrier covered in spikes.
  • Stout Strength: Yunobo is very strong despite his timid attitude, capable of powerful punches and lifting feats.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Subtle, but Yunobo is more confident and proactive than he was in Breath of the Wild.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Yunobo is visibly wearing the rememnants of Daruk's champion cloth and chain sash as a necklace.

    Riju

Riju

Weapon: Bridles

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20201119_150753kakhw.png
Voiced by: Arisa Sakuraba (Japanese), Elizabeth Maxwell (English) Foreign VAs

Urbosa's descendant and chieftain of the Gerudo. She fights alongside her sand seal Patricia.

Riju's unique action sends Patricia into a rage, rushing forward at high speed and sweeping up enemies in the way.

For tropes on her appearance in Breath of the Wild, see here.

  • Action Girl: She's a literal girl, being only twelve years old, and as a Gerudo with some power over lightning, it comes with the territory.
  • Aerith and Bob: Riju has an exotic name, but her sand seal Patricia has a mundane name.
  • Animal Lover: Riju adores sand seals so much that every one of combo quests involves them.
  • Assist Character: Some of Riju's attacks will summon Gerudo soldiers to attack enemies for her.
  • Attack Animal: Riju's "weapon" is a bridle, which is to say the object tethering her to her sand seal Patricia, who does most of the actual attacking.
  • Badass Adorable: She’s a child who can lay waste to entire armies just as well as the other playable characters.
  • The Beastmaster: Riju's main method of combat is to sic her sand seal Patricia at enemies and tow herself around the battlefield.
  • The Berserker: Not Riju, but Patricia who goes on a rampage when using Riju's unique action.
  • A Girl and Her X: A vai and her sand seal
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: She is the chief of the Gerudo in her time after the death of her mother, but she is only twelve years old and a somewhat callow ruler because of it. Much of her relationship with Urbosa is absorbing what wisdom she can from a much older and experienced chief.
  • Combination Attack: She does some with her sand seal, using Patricia's momentum to crash into enemies and vice versa.
  • Cool Crown: She wears the same elaborate crown as Urbosa, although it appears much larger on Riju's diminutive size.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: By far the most mobile character in the game, their attacks allow them to mow down legions of mooks and traverse the battlefield quicker than anyone else in the cast... but the slippery nature of their attacks and combo strings combined with Age of Calamity doing away with juggle combos being allowed on stronger enemies makes fighting stronger, always stationary enemies much trickier than it is with anyone else on the cast, too. If you know what you're doing, you can still one-cycle Weak Point Gauges with them, but it will take some practice, patience, and possibly looking up a character guide to learn the ins and outs of it.
  • Foil: To her ancestor Urbosa. Urbosa is an experienced chief of the Gerudo who goes directly into the fray while Riju was forced to take up her position at a prematurely young age and relies on Patricia to do most of the fighting.
  • Implausible Boarding Skills: Riju will shield surf along any terrain towed by Patricia, be it sand, snow or solid stone.
  • Kid Hero: She's by far the youngest of the playable characters at age twelve.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Using Patricia, Riju can cross the battlefield at absurd speeds, even faster when Patricia is on a rampage and corral entire hordes with ease. Her dash attacks in particular are very powerful.
  • Mask of Power: Riju has the Thunder Helm, a magical heirloom of her family which allows her to wield the power of lightning like her ancestor Urbosa.
  • Pet Contest Episode: Riju loves sand seals so much that one of her quests involves hosting a beauty pageant for them.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: When using the Special Attack.
Riju: It's time, Patricia! Know my might!
  • Shield Bash: Done quite uniquely, Riju often attacks by shield bashing enemies with the shield she uses as a wakeboard when being towed by Patricia. She can also use it on its own, allowing her to parry like Urbosa and Link can.
  • Shield Surf: Riju uses a shield to surf around the battlefield, being pulled by Patricia.
  • Shock and Awe: Through the Gerudo royal line, Riju can wield the power of the Thunder Helm for her special attack and electrocute enemies.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Unlike the Champions, she's the sole female of the New Champions. When combined with her sand seal Patricia, it becomes Two Girls to a Team.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: She didn't quite inherit Urbosa's Fury, but her Royal Blood does allow her to wield the Thunder Helm's powers to a much greater degree then any other.
  • Tag Team: She fights alongside Patricia the sand seal, using her to shield-surf into enemies.
  • Warm-Hearted Walrus: Patricia, of course. She's even dubbed as the best Sand Seal.

    Teba

Teba

Weapon: Bow

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20201119_150841yekvy.png
Voiced by: Takuya Masumoto (Japanese), Sean Chiplock (English) Foreign VAs

A warrior from Rito Village who admires Revali's skill. Stoic and composed.

Teba's unique action allows him to shoot more powerful arrows. Holding the button longer increases the number and range of the arrows.

For tropes on his appearance in Breath of the Wild, see here.

  • Action Dad: He has a son back home.
  • Air Jousting: One of his combos involves flying into opponents rapidly as long as you keep tapping the button.
  • Aloof Archer: He's a cool-headed Rito archer.
  • Area of Effect: His specialty is sweeping through the battlefield with his explosives and swarm of arrows.
  • Arrows on Fire: While there aren't elemental arrows from Breath of the Wild in this game, the bomb arrows he fires resemble arrows on fire much like from Breath of the Wild as well.
  • Aside Glance: Upon activating his special move, he looks at the camera with a thumbs up.
  • Badass Normal: He is the only champion in the game with no elemental affinity (he lacks wind magic compared to Revali). He makes up for it by being a badass archer with a knack for blowing things up.
  • Bash Brothers: With Revali. Disappointed by his arrogance he may be, this doesn't stop him from working well alongside him to defeat hordes of monsters led by Calamity Ganon, watching his back all the while, with Revali returning the favour.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: He towers over Revali. Even his Falcon Bow is almost as tall as the past Champion!
  • Bird People: He is a Rito, the bird-like people from the Hebra region and more specifically a hawk.
  • Broken Pedestal: Teba is a bit shocked by Revali's attitude, particularly towards Link. It's far from a devastating moment for him, but he remarks that he "hadn't expected the Rito champion to be so..." before Urbosa cuts him off. In Guardian of Remembrance however, he is delighted to learn that Revali does have a heart of gold, especially when it comes to kids like his son, which redeems him in Teba's eyes. In the end, he comments on how the experience has been "enlightening", having seen both his bad side and good side.
Revali, after Link arrives to back them up against Windblight Ganon: Took you long enough to get here, eh? I know I'm worth the trouble, but you really shouldn't have.
Teba: I think what the Champion means to say is...thank you.
  • Charged Attack: Teba's unique action is that he can charge an arrow, he can do this indefinitely in the middle of combos and other actions and at its strongest state will unleash both a Multishot and Rain of Arrows with bomb arrows.
  • Character Development: While his short development was already in Breath of the Wild, it's much more visible in this game where he is respectful towards Link and is polite with his words.
  • Curse Cut Short: Another Character Interrupts variant. He was about to describe Revali as something before Urbosa steps in.
Teba: I never thought the Champion would be so...
Urbosa: Hold that thought for now.
  • Death from Above: Specializes in bringing down air-based attacks. A bulk of his moveset is raining down a barrage of arrows, bombs, and other forms of projectiles.
    • His unique action once fully charged includes raining bomb arrows aside from the spread shot. They drop at intervals and good at clearing foes or catching bosses off guard.
    • His YX, YYX, and YYYYYX combos put him airborne while shooting down on enemies. YX is a concentrated barrage of arrows in front of him and is good for single or few foes clumped together. YYX is a spread shot that fans outward, mowing down large groups of foes. YYYYYX is like YX except he can aim at a specific area and is slightly more focused.
    • One of his weakpoint smashes is a dive kick.
    • His special attack is doing a bombing run with bomb arrows.
  • Diving Kick: One of Teba's Weakpoint Smashes is to fly high up into the air and come foot first down on enemies.
  • Flight: He keeps himself aloft indefinitely unlike characters who use a paraglider. Unlike Revali he automatically flies in his combo string rather than having an action to swap manually and can sustain it by pressing B as though he did a wall jump.
  • Foil: To his predecessor Revali. Like Revali he has no great lineage and had to rely on hard work and guile to get to where he is, but Teba is a terse, humble family man while Revali is an arrogant genius whose family is never mentioned.
  • Friend to All Children: Many of his character quests involve helping out the Rito children. Helps that he is a loving father to his son. When Revali reveals his own soft spot for kids as shown by him bonding with his son, Teba is delighted.
  • Great Bow: He carries a Falcon Bow that's almost as tall as him.
  • Handy Feet: Teba can use his talons to fire his bow, while still using his wings to keep himself aloft.
  • Humble Hero: He is a champion whose origins are simple, with no destiny or succession for his call. The closest he has for a proclamation is stating that he is a Rito warrior who trained in archery.
  • Informed Flaw: His in-game bio states that he is quick to anger, however this almost never actually happens as Teba is shown to be very humble and composed.
  • Irony: Teba expected Revali to be a decent and respectable champion, but Revali turned out to be far from it and Teba himself is the decent and respectable champion himself.
  • Master Archer: While not at Revali's level, Teba is still a highly skilled archer in his own right. No normal warrior could take out Guardian Skywatchers with one hit in midair. And unlike Revali, he is also a bowyer, with great knowledge of bow craftsmanship as shown in some of his quests and his Breath of the Wild profile.
  • Morality Pet: Teba is one of the few characters whom Revali is genuinely respectful and nice to.
  • Multishot: He sweeps through the battlefield by firing multiple arrows at once at a rapid pace.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • One of his Weakpoint Smash attacks is jumping up to aim a bomb arrow at the enemy. The composition and pose he does is exactly the same as the advertised Link's ancient bow and arrow pose.
    • His Aside Glance thumbs up is the same reaction he gave to Link when flying him to Vah Medoh in Breath of the Wild.
  • Natural Weapon: Teba kicks enemies with his talons and thwacks them with his wings, along with using his bow.
  • Nice Guy: He became this by the time he appears in this game. He's nothing but polite and respectful towards Link, and a Humble Hero who never rubs any of his successes in anyone's faces.
  • Not So Stoic: He has moments of this, especially in the Guardian of Remembrance DLC. When Tulin imitates Revali, he shares a laugh with Revali. He is shown silently but happily chuckling to himself as he watches Revali look after Tulin while he naps during the secret ending.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Teba, normally very blunt and straightforward with his opinions, is noticeably off-put by his hero Revali's arrogant behavior, yet behaves in a very restrained manner around him, never directly criticizing him outside of a parting barb about being "enlightened" by Revali's true face and is more subdued in complementing Link in Revali's presence to avoid offending the temperamental Champion. For someone who normally speaks their mind without filter to rein themselves in as such highlights Teba's struggle to reconcile his idealized version of the Rito Champion with the actual Revali's abrasive personality. However, his opinion on Revali improves significantly when Revali helped him save his son Tulin and then striking up a friendship with him, therefore revealing his soft spot for kids.
  • Orbiting Particle Shield: His Cryonis Rune makes him summon three blocks that rotate around him.
  • Older Sidekick: Teba defers to Revali as the superior in their relationship despite being a full-grown adult compared to the young Revali.
  • Papa Wolf: When he learns that Tulin followed him into Revali's time and becomes lost in Korok Forest, he is immediately worried that he will be killed by the monsters and pleads with Revali to let him tag along. Once he finds him, he is clearly uncomfortable about leaving his son all alone, which he fortunately has one of the Rito Captains take up the offer for him. That said, threatening his only child is a bad idea.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: When using the Special Attack.
Teba: This will ruffle some feathers! That did the trick!
  • Rain of Arrows: Shooting arrows like a machine gun is Teba's forte, so it's an example of one guy doing the trope.
  • Razor Wings: Uses his long arm-wings for attacking as a startup combo.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, after Revali helps him rescue his son, and then revealing his own soft spot towards kids, Teba began seeing Revali in a new positive light, if him being more jovial and relaxed around Revali and sharing a hearty laugh with him after his son innocently imitates Revali's arrogant persona is of any indication.
Revali: (to Tulin) Maybe it won't be long until you're master of the wind just like me. (to Teba) You never know, eh?
Teba: (jovially) Haha! That is true. But before that, he must surpass his old man.
  • Spam Attack: Encouraged by his combos that end with X. Strap a turbo controller on him while doing his basic XY combo to watch him decimate bosses.
  • Spin Attack: One of his few melee moves is a rushing attack with his arms outward while spinning, as though he's performing a spinning maneuver of an airplane. In his YYYYX combo he does this but now he pulls enemies in a wide radius by ramming against them repeatedly until they're all clumped together.
  • The Stoic: Teba is fairly terse and quiet, but is quite passionate deep down.
  • Spread Shot: He can sweep through the battlefield with a combo that makes him repeatedly fire arrows that spread apart, Legolas-style.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Moreso compared to Revali. His upgrade turns all his arrows into bomb arrows!
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: Plenty of his moveset involves firing exploding arrows at his enemies.
  • Time Stands Still: His Stasis rune attack has a special animation compared to others wherein the whole game actually slows to almost a still while he makes a pointing gesture. He can point at many slowed down enemies by aiming before the actual stasis effect takes place! And should you miss nearby enemies, they still get frozen.
  • Token Adult: He's the only one among the new champions who is mature (Yunobo and Riju are both children, and Sidon is practically a young adult in Zora years despite being hundreds of years older).
  • Tornado Move:
    • One of his weakpoint smash moves is spinning around to his target rapidly, creating a tornado on its place, before igniting it with bomb arrows.
    • His Magnesis rune makes the metallic objects spin around, creating some sort of magnetic tornado.
  • Trick Arrow: His arrows come in four flavors - the standard arrows which he fires rapidly; the wind-powered arrows, which are arrows that a piercing effect and wider radius he fires in his YYYX combo; the explosive arrows he use in his stronger attacks and in particular a character upgrade; and finally the Bomb rune-infused arrow he uses for his Bomb rune action, which not only explodes on impact, but also scatters several remote bombs on the target.
  • Wind from Beneath My Wings: While he can't control the wind on Revali's level, he can still use the force of his wings to summon whirlwinds.

Secret Characters

    Great Fairies

Great Fairies

Weapon: Bangles

Cotera Voiced by: Erin Yvette (English)
Tera Voiced by: Erica Mendez (English) Foreign VAs
Mija Voiced by: Jenn Wong (English) Foreign VAs
Kaysa Voiced by: Melique Berger (English) Foreign VAs
Malanya Voiced by: Patrick Seitz (English)

A quartet of powerful nature spirits who reside within pools of water.

The Great Fairies' unique action performs a special move unique to each fairy. Using this action switches the Great Fairy in the lead.

For tropes on their appearance in Breath of the Wild, see here.

  • Assist Character: Malanya the Horse God pops out of the shared flower for a few attacks.
  • Continuity Nod: The flowers each of them summons for their unique action are the same found in abundance around each of their respective fountains; Blue Nightshade for Cotera, Armoranth for Mija, Mighty Thistle for Kaysa, and Warm, Cold, and Electric Safflina for Tera.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: Cotera's unique action causes the enemies it hits to take more damage. The effect from one hit is minor, but it stacks infinitely, potentially ramping their damage on boss units up to ridiculous levels.
  • Defend Command: The Great Fairies notably have a far sturdier guard than most characters, which helps mitigate their gigantic hurtbox.
  • Deflector Shields: Mija's unique action surrounds the fairies in a shining spherical barrier that absorbs one enemy attack (two with the enhanced moveset).
  • Difficult, but Awesome: There's a reason why early analysis of Great Fairies was seen as the worst character in the game. As noted by Glass Cannon entry below, they have a huge hitbox making attacks harder to avoid. However, if you learn how to manage dodging and guarding, you have a set of characters who can whittle enemy health so quickly. The trick is using Cotera's defense debuff unique action and cancelling the attempt to switch fairies by dodging or guarding. You can kill bosses faster than Impa or Teba this way!
  • Expy: For the Great Fairy of the original Hyrule Warriors, sharing her large size and slow attacks, but these Great Fairies are a little more focused in their fighting style while the original Great Fairy was a little wild and all over the place.
  • Fighting Clown: Their hilarious antics in Breath of the Wild are translated as attacks in this game, so you get things like them blowing kisses and smooching enemies as attacks.
  • Glass Cannon: The Great Fairies can dish out a ton of damage with powerful and wide-ranging attacks, but it's just as easy to take a ton of damage while playing as them, as their great size makes them such a huge target that dodging attacks is a tall order.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: The Great Fairies fight using mostly slaps and punches. Given that their fists are bigger than most people, they don't need much else.
  • Green Thumb: Their unique actions all sprout different kinds of flowers.
  • Greed: They require rupees — the game's currency — to unseal their power, and sic the player character on enemies until they obtain the requisite amount.
  • Guide Dang It!: Nowhere in the game are the effects of the fairies' individual unique actions stated. Cotera's inflicts a stacking defense debuff on enemies it hits; Mija's creates an attack-negating barrier; Tera's is an extremely wide Herd-Hitting Attack; and Kaysa's fires a flurry of buds ahead of her that can tear through Weak Point Gauges.
  • Heart Beatdown: They have several attacks that fire large, heart-shaped projectiles, either through two of the sisters putting their hands together to form the shape or from a Projectile Kiss.
  • Herd-Hitting Attack: All of the Fairies' attacks hit a wide area by simple virtue of their massive size.
  • Kiss of Death: Their special attack has all four Great Fairies lean in and kiss the targeted enemy — dealing massive damage.
  • Magical Accessory: Their weapons are bangles that are said to amplify their powers.
  • Power Echoes: Their voices have an echo befitting powerful mystical beings.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: When using the Special Attack.
    Cotera: Nothing else for it!
    Mija: Witness my splendor!
    Kaysa: You deserve this.
    Tera: You've upset me!
  • Sibling Team: The four Great Fairies are sisters and fight as one unit.
  • Sizeshifter: They'll shrink their pod down to fit through passages that are too small for their full size, though they can't attack in this state.
  • Status Effects: Their attacks can cause a defense debuff or a speed debuff.
  • Tag Team: Cotera, Mija, Kaysa and Tera swap out with each other after attacking. Each of the four has her own unique action.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Their attacks might not have nearly as much finesse as everyone else's, but that doesn't mean much considering they're all about the size of Hinoxes!

    Monk Maz Koshia

Weapon: Sheikah Bands

An ancient Sheikah monk from 10,000 years in the past.

Maz Koshia earns symbols by destroying the traps summoned by his strong attacks. His unique action has him increase his size and perform a powerful attack at the cost of one symbol.

For tropes on his appearance in Breath of the Wild, see here.

  • Ambiguous Gender: Despite being referred to with masculine pronouns, Maz Koshia is allowed to compete in the Miss Vai Battle Pageant. Perhaps being an over 10,000 year-old monk means the enlightened Koshia transcends gender.
  • Bring It: He does a variation of a "let us now fight" quote depending on the character who's fighting to unlock him.
    • Default
Monk Maz Koshia: In the name of the Goddess Hylia, let the trial begin.
    • Link
Monk Maz Koshia: It is time to test your worth, Hero.
    • Zelda
Monk Maz Koshia: Princess of Hyrule... Allow me to challenge the bloodline of the goddess.
    • Mipha
Monk Maz Koshia: Princess of the Zora... Show me your resolve.
    • Urbosa
Monk Maz Koshia: Those fearless eyes... Do you seek a trial to overcome, chief of the Gerudo?
    • Revali
Monk Maz Koshia: Show me the fruits of your labor, Rito warrior.
    • Daruk
Monk Maz Koshia: Show me your grit, Goron warrior.
    • King Rhoam:
Monk Maz Koshia: You seem a worthy leader, but is it so? Let us find out.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: He will fight alongside the heroes, but only after they defeat him in combat.
  • Doppleganger Attack: Uses a few in his attacks. Unlike Impa, his clones look exactly like him, indicating his mastery of the technique.
  • Eye Beams: He can fire beams of ancient energy from the sigil on his face covering.
  • Flying Weapon: He does not wield any of the guardian weapons he has in his hands, instead moving them around with telekinesis.
  • Guide Dang It!: Maz Koshia's in-game guide tells you to gain runes by destroying the objects generated by his Strong Attacks. However, his fifth Strong Attack has him summon a whole Shrine entrance. You can attack it all you want, but it will never be destroyed no matter what you use on it. What use does it serve? Using his ZR attack on the Shrine gives you two runes for a net gain of one, allowing you to strike the Shrine repeatedly to quickly build his rune gauge. The game does not tell you about this without experimentation.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Several of his battle quotes suggest that he is using only a fraction of his power.
  • Laser Blade: He wields a pair of Ancient Swords, though he uses telekinesis to swing them instead of physically holding them.
  • Levitating Lotus Position: Perpetually does this, whether it's moving around or attacking. He only gets out of it when he’s doing his unique action or a specific Weak Point Smash.
  • Magical Accessory: His wrist loops, made with Sheikah technology that enables the wearer to summon and control ancient relics.
  • Mana Meter: He has a special meter that can be filled by destroying the objects he summons in his attacks (or by continuously striking a shrine entrance with his unique action). His unique action performs a powerful attack at the cost of one charge from this meter.
  • Mystical White Hair: Just like most other Sheikah.
  • Mythology Gag: Part of the things he can summon out of thin air are traps found in shrines.
  • Power Echoes: His voice has a thick, ethereal echo to it whenever he grunts or speaks, making him hard to understand at times.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: When using the Special Attack.
Monk Maz Koshia: A trial awaits!
  • Recurring Riff: When he summons a shrine entrance, that familiar "puzzle solved" jingle can be heard afterwards.
  • Sizeshifter: For some of his attacks, he grows to an enormous height.
  • Spin Attack: One of his attacks has him viciously spinning around with a pair of Ancient Swords.
  • Time Abyss: He's been around since the very first conflict with Calamity Ganon. That makes him 10,000 years old. To put it in perspective, on Earth, that means he would have been alive since the creation of agriculture.
  • Trap Master: Many of his combo finishers summon shrine objects (and in one case, an entire shrine entrance) to the battlefield. When attacked, they either detonate explosively or respond with a shockwave attack of their own, inflicting damage to nearby enemies. If he uses his unique action on the metal balls he summons, they will furiously bounce up and down for a bit before exploding. Fitting for a member of an ancient order of monks that devised a series of shrines meant to test the mettle of the Champion of Hyrule.
  • Worthy Opponent: He will always tell his foe in "Trial of the Ancients" that they possess the worth of a hero.

DLC Characters

    Battle-Tested Guardian

Battle-Tested Guardian

Weapon: Battle-tested Guardian Technology

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aoc_battle_tested_guardian.png

A modified Guardian Stalker from long ago unearthed inside of the Forgotten Temple.

The Battle-Tested Guardian's unique action allows it to track and lock onto an enemy, causing all of its strong attacks to automatically target it.

It is available to download as part of the "Pulse of the Ancients" DLC pack.

  • Ace Custom: Discussed. The royal scientists speculate that the Battle-Tested Guardian is an elite unit constructed from greater stock than the average Guardian, explaining why it's still functional centuries later and not under the sway of Calamity Ganon.
  • Breakout Mook Character: After being a prominent, major threat throughout Breath of the Wild and retaining this role in Age of Calamity in spite of being more easily slain, an actual Guardian Stalker can join the heroes and even annihilate its Calamity-possessed kin.
  • Camera Lock-On: While all of the playable characters have this as a mechanic, the Guardian's ZR move allows all of its laser attacks to home in on a specific target, and eliminate the need to manually aim its standard eye laser so it can be rapidly fired while ensuring that it hits.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: This Guardian's Tron Lines glow the original orange instead of magenta to signify that it is not under Calamity Ganon's control.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: It is unlocked after being defeated in battle, and according to its associated research quest, Robbie is surprised to see that the Guardian wants to fight on their side.
  • Homing Lasers: By using the Guardian's ZR move to lock onto a target, its laser attacks will automatically home in on said target.
  • Human Pincushion: Not only does it have moss on his body, it has a sword, spear, and axe planted into its body as a testament on how many fights this Guardian has gotten into.
  • Mighty Glacier: It's a Guardian, so naturally it's rather bulky and slow. However, it works around this by being able to attack from an impressive distance.
  • Mythology Gag: The Guardian automatically glides whenever it uses Cryonis. One famous way of dispatching Guardians in Breath of the Wild involves using the Cryonis Rune underneath them while in Bullet Time to send them flying while Link nocks a Ancient Arrow for the kill shot.
  • No Range Like Point-Blank Range: One of its Weak-Point Smashes has it use its legs to latch onto the target and fire the Wave-Motion Gun on its underside at point-blank range.
  • No-Sell: During its fight, using any rods on it will be negated by it jumping away. However, if it's toppled over, it will get stunned unless given the chance to stand back up.
  • Reclaimed by Nature: The Guardian is covered in patches of moss, no doubt from all the years it spent dormant. Much of his Quests are much-needed upgrades to address years of neglect.
  • Rogue Drone: This is the only Guardian Stalker who joins forces with Hyrule's forces rather than be under the control of Calamity Ganon, likely because it was modified and buried deep in the Forgotten Temple. This plays with the trope in a way as this Guardian is also the only one other then Terrako to actually perform its intended function; fight the Calamity.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: The Guardian spent years sealed inside of the Forgotten Temple.
  • Tennis Boss: During its fight in the Forbidden Temple, it will charge up a laser attack just like an ordinary Guardian. However, if you Perfect Guard the beam back at it, it will reflect it back to you until one of you mistimes the Guard.
  • Token Heroic Orc: Much to the surprise of Robbie, this Guardian wants to join the heroes despite the fact that Calamity Ganon has taken over every other Guardian in Hyrule. Robbie does admit it makes sense since the Guardians would be programmed to protect Hyrule.
  • Tron Lines: Covered in glowing energy lines like most other Guardians.
  • Use Your Head: One of its Weak Point Smash attacks is to throw its massive bulk at the enemy head first.
