The Main Characters

The main five surgeons of the series, who were best friends since med school. This page is a work in progress!

    In General
  • Book Smart: All five of the doctors are experts in their respective fields.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Their band’s name translates to Goryong Ridge (Dinosaur Ridge in English), a hiking trail around the Seorak mountain in South Korea. It’s funny because none of them actually went past the entrance of the ridge.
    • Made even funnier in the latter half of Season 2, where a beleaguered Jung-won tries convincing Jun-wan, Ik-jun, and Seok-hyung to climb said ridge to no avail.
    • Finally inverted in Season 2 Episode 10, where they plan to go the ridge. As per usual, hijinks ensue. They don’t go to the ridge.
  • Super Doc: Deconstructed. While the five doctors are noted for their expertise in their fields and people go to them for difficult surgeries, their success rate is not 100%.
  • True Companions: What they are as a whole. They may argue with each other and even squabble, but they all care for each other deeply.

    Ik-joon Lee

Ik-joon Lee / Lee Ik-joon

Played by: Jo Jung-Suk

The unofficial leader of the five surgeons. A professor of general surgery. Noted for his antics and excellent liver transplant skills. Has a son named U-ju. Plays the guitar and provides lead vocals.
  • Action Dad: Saves people’s lives on the daily and has a son.
  • For Happiness: It is shown time and time again that Ik-joon wants his friends, family, and patients to be happy. And he delivers.
    • He tries to be a very good father to his son as he's a single dad. Whenever he's telling his son that he needs to work for a while, he always tells his son his work schedule. Which is why Uju figured out something was wrong with his dad when he got mugged— he never takes night shift twice in a row.
  • Keet: To an extent. Even though he’s in his 40s, he’s mentioned to Song-hwa and his then-residents that if he was single and not working at the hospital, he’d go clubbing all the time.
  • Motor Mouth: Comes up when he speaks with his sister.
Jun-wan: Wow, you guys should be rappers.
  • Nice Guy: A genuinely stand-up guy, as demonstrated on multiple occasions:
    • In a flashback, he goes out drinking with Seok-hyung after Seok-hyung asked Song-hwa out and she turned him down. While they're hanging out together, Song-ha texts Ik-joon asking him to hang out. He turns her down to stay with a very drunk Seok-hyung.
    • In Season 1, Episode 8, Gyeo-ul asks a drug-seeking patient who is being rude to the nurses if he is addicted to narcotic painkillers. The patient turns out to be an addict, but makes enough of a fuss that the hospital gives him a discount to avoid more trouble. When a more senior doctor asks Ik-Joon to talk to Gyeo-ul about the way she talks to patients, Ik-Joon says that he will talk to her, but he think that she did nothing wrong.
  • Shipper on Deck: Was this for Gyeo-wul and Jung-won, Seok-hyung and Min-ha, and finally his sister and Jun-wan when they split up.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Wears glasses during surgery, or when he’s not wearing contacts.

    Song-hwa Chae

    Jun-wan Kim

Jun-wan Kim / Kim Jun-wan

Played by: Jung Kyung-ho

A professor of cardiothoracic surgery. Known for his exceptional surgical skills and cold demeanor. Plays the guitar.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Season 1, Episode 8 shows Jun-wan's softer side as a physician when he is unable to save a baby with a rare heart condition. He consoles the parents and respectfully, but passionately asks them to donate the baby's heart to the hospital to study his condition and make sure that no other baby dies from it. He is stoic when he turns off the life support machine and declares the baby dead, but it's clear that this is difficult for him to watch. He's holding back tears when he comforts the mother at the baby's funeral.

    Jung-won (Andrea) Ahn

Jung-won Ahn / Ahn Jung-won

Played by: Yoo Yeon-seok

A professor of pediatric surgery and the youngest son of the hospital's founder. Known for his caring personality. Plays the drums. Comes from a devoutly Catholic family and all of his siblings are priests and nuns.
