Nikola Eskalibur

  • All of the Other Reindeer: He was shunned by others for spending all his time reading.
  • Badass Bookworm: He spent all his time studying everything he could find about witches. He mostly remains level headed in combat and is tough for his age.
  • Beneath the Mask: Several characters comment that while he seems calm and friendly most of the time, in truth, his soul is darkened with hatred and rage.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: With a shirt on, he looks as scrawny as a 13 year old is expected, but without his shirt, he's surprisingly ripped.
  • Happily Adopted: After his village was destroyed and his parents killed, he was taken in by Pontifex Valentina.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: He's a 13 year old surrounded by some of the most gorgeous women alive who all want a piece of him. He can be forgiven when his thoughts become less pure.
  • Kidanova: He's 13 and by Volume 3, he has three wives, plus several other women falling for him.
  • Namedar: His spell for revealing a witch's Stigma also tells him their true name.
  • Unwanted Harem: He's very uncomfortable with the fact he now has multiple wives. He's slowly falling in love with them, though.
  • The Witch Hunter: His mission is to travel the land with his wives and wipe out any evil witch they find.
  • You Are What You Hate: It is heavily implied he is related to the witches he is fighting.
  • You Killed My Father: He's obsessed with defeating the witches because one of them burned his home village to the ground and killed his parents.

First Witches

Ezelvald

  • Bottomless Magazines: She makes arrows with magic, so they are limitless.
  • Conditional Powers: To activate her powers, she has to drink Nikola's tears.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Several male and female characters comment on her great beauty.
  • Feather Motif: Her transformation comes with an explosion of feathers, and she uses them in some of her magic.
  • Made of Iron: She's endured torture twice so far and never screams or cries.
  • Malicious Misnaming: She constantly calls Upsula things like "Leftovers" or "Sloppy Seconds", all things that remind Upsula she is Nikola's second wife.
  • Top Wife: Not only is she Nikola's first wife, he eventually loses his virginity to her and tells her he loves her the most.
  • Tracking Device: She can turn a feather into one of these. She can fire an arrow and it will hit where the feather is without fail.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: Her arrows inflict these and even a witch's Healing Factor does not help.

Upsula

Mylitta

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Back in the day, the other members of her coven shunned her for spending all her time in the dark with her spiders and fungi. Nikola bonds with her over their similar circumstances.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Nearly every other sentence she speaks is her apologizing for some perceived mistake or for being worthless.
  • The Beastmaster: She controls spiders.
  • Conditional Powers: To activate her powers, she has to drink Nikola's sweat.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She has macabre tastes, but she freaks out when she sees "Papa".
  • Feed It with Fire: The more damage she takes in battle, the more powerful her fungus spores become.
  • Fungus Humongous: Her weapon is a staff topped with a huge fungus that sprays noxious spores on the enemy.
  • Magic Mushroom: Her specialty is making mushrooms with various effects spread like wildfire. Even when she was still dead, mushrooms grew around her skeleton.
  • Master Poisoner: She can make all kinds of poisons and other potions from ingredients found in nature.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She prefers the company of spiders, insects, and other creepy things over people.
  • Red Baron: The Lonely Poisoner.
  • Supreme Chef: She can turn insects and poisonous mushrooms into tasty delicacies.

Adante

  • Animal Motifs: Rabbits.
  • Combo Platter Powers: In addition to the powers Diana grants her, she has demonic powers.
  • Conditional Powers: To activate their Diana-given powers, she has to drink "Papa's" saliva.
  • Friendly Enemy: She has nothing against Nikola and his wives/her old sisters and talks to them like they are still friends, though this won't stop her from trying to kill them.
  • Monster Progenitor: She is the source of all the evil witches.
  • The Oath-Breaker: Back in the day, she constantly broke her vows like her vow of celibacy. The First Witches also swore that they would serve the Church and protect humankind when they were brought back to life, but she instead causes chaos and destruction by making witches, though this may be because her husband is a demon. Despite breaking her vows, Diana has not relinquished her powers.
  • Picky People Eater: Besides "Papa's" saliva, the only thing she is able to eat without her body rejecting it is the blood of a priest or monk who has forsaken his vows. It was part of her Deal with the Devil.
  • Really 700 Years Old: "Papa" brought her back to life centuries before the others were.
  • Super-Empowering: She can turn ordinary women into witches.
  • The Vamp: She seduces priests and monks to make them forsake their vows of celibacy so that she can kill and feed on them.

Evil Witches

Lurrie

  • We Can Rule Together: She tries to convince Ezelvald to join her and her coven. She refuses while dissing her as a fake.
  • Whip Sword: Wields a seemingly ordinary whip that can become razor sharp to slice people to pieces or function like an ordinary whip.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Because Ezelvald didn't know about Stigmas at the time, she gets confused when she pumps Lurrie full of arrows and she lies there writhing in agony instead of dying. Her suffering only ends when Nikola tells her to aim for her tattoo.

Alexandra

  • Dual Wielding: She uses two sickles.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Upsula slices her into really tiny pieces, destroying her Stigma in the process.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: She infiltrates Sant Angelo by wearing monk robes and pretending to be a man. However, Upsula can tell at a glance that she is a woman.
  • We Can Rule Together: She tries to convince Upsula to join her and her coven, but she refuses.

Cybelle

  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: After capturing Nikola, she decides to spare his life and treat him as an honored guest, in preparation to find a way to make him truly angry so that she can feed on that emotion.
  • Depraved Bisexual: She expressed an attraction to both Nikola and Ezelvald, and drained the soul of a woman with a kiss.
  • Emotion Eater: She becomes stronger with the anger of the people around her. She is defeated when she is separated from an angry mob and has no one to feed on. She fights on for a time, but runs out of her stored energy.
  • Organ Dodge: When Ezelvald shoots her in the chest where her heart would be, it doesn't affect her that much besides the initial pain even though it is a Wound That Will Not Heal because she doesn't have a heart.
  • Playing with Fire: She controls flames well enough to make Ezelvald's arrows turn to ash in midair before they can hit her.
  • The Power of Hate: Her flames are described as wrath given form.
  • Red Baron: The Witch of Wrath.
  • The Vamp: She seduces men before draining their souls and turning them into thralls.
  • Victory by Endurance: Ezelvald points out that without people's anger to feed on, she'll eventually run out of energy, while Ezelvald's arrows are unlimited. She pumps arrow after arrow until she can no longer block them with her flames.
  • Wham Line: Right before getting killed, Nikola interrogates her on whether she was the one who destroyed his village. She says it wasn't her, but suddenly recognizes him and says his mother was a witch.
  • Worthy Opponent: After a few sword clashes, Upsula compliments her skill and comments she may be a real witch after all. Ezelvald defies this and says she still thinks Cybelle is a fake witch.

"The Bandit Witch"

  • The Beastmaster: She controls a pack of wolves.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: After breathing in the spores from Mylitta's fungus, she and her wolves collapse and go into anaphylactic shock, their bodies swelling up and bleeding everywhere. Nikola and the others presumably destroy her Stigma off screen.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Says she doesn't understand why a witch would help humans.
  • The Highwayman: She robs and kills travelers who pass by her territory.
  • No Name Given: She is only referred to as the Bandit Witch.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: She calls Mylitta weak for protecting humans. She didn't know that Mylitta gets stronger from getting hurt, so by shielding the others from her attacks with her body, she became powerful enough to beat her.

Amala

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Due to being fed poison as a child, she can recover and shrug off being poisoned in the present. Mylitta's poisons only affect her for about a minute.
  • Death by Despair: When she is defeated by Nikolai and then surrounded by an angry mob of the villagers she starved, she imagines what will happen next. She imagines the mob beating her up, stripping her naked, then sentencing her to be locked up until she starves to death. She is so horrified by the thought of starving that she has a heart attack and dies. Adante revives her seconds later.
  • Dying as Yourself: When she is turned into a witch, she goes mad. When she finally dies for real, she reverts to her original personality.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: In her first appearance, she is actually an ordinary human who happens to be powerful enough to enslave a village. Then Adante brings her back to life and turns her into a witch.
  • Freudian Excuse: As a child, after her parents died, her abusive older brother starved her and then fed her poison. She survived and killed him, then became obsessed with food.
  • Glass Cannon: She is quite strong and skilled in combat, but Nikola is able to floor her with a single open handed slap.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: She can kill two rabbits that were running away with two Multishot arrows.
  • The Social Darwinist: After conquering a village, she confiscates all the food and kills anyone who tries to take some. However, if anyone actually manages to take some, she rewards them. As she explains, only people with the will and strength to eat deserve to eat.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's a real beauty and is at least a head and a half taller than Ezelvald, who is pretty tall herself.
  • Villainous Glutton: She is obsessed with eating and she and her mooks have huge feasts all the time. Strangely, though her mooks are morbidly obese, she still looks like a supermodel. She didn't have magic at the time, so she can't say A Wizard Did It.
  • We Can Rule Together: She offers anyone who can take her food a chance to join her mooks. Those who refuse are locked up and starved until they agree.

Pontifex Valentina

  • The Chains of Commanding: She's had to make several tough calls, including faking her adopted son Nikola's death to free him from the bounds of the church so that he can remain married and hunt witches, knowing they likely won't ever see each other again.
  • Cleavage Window: Almost all of her outfits sport this.
  • Retired Badass: She was a knight before becoming leader of the church.
  • A Taste of the Lash: Lurrie subjects her to this while interrogating her. Ezelvald heals her wounds later.

"Papa"

  • Eye Scream: In his true form, his eyes appear to be sewn shut.
  • Losing Your Head: His true form is apparently a severed head now.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Adante refers to him as "Papa".
  • Our Demons Are Different: He's a mysterious being who brought Adante back to life centuries ago, became her husband, and granted her demonic powers, then charged her with creating witches to terrorize the human race. His head doesn't look human.
  • Voluntary Shape Shifting: He can apparently take on any form, like a humble farmer.
