The Guardians

The Guardians of Kandrakar, five girls granted with extraordinary elemental powers and the role of fighting evil across the Known Worlds.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Thanks to the deconstructive nature of the fic, the girls all have a much harder time of things than in canon, and it definitely shows as the plot progresses.
  • Amazon Brigade: Being an all-female team.
  • Big Sister Instinct: They have this for Jade at first before she gets her own powers, despite them all being roughly the same age.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: The reason the Chan Clan are called in is to train them, Uncle and Tohru on the magic side of things, Jackie and Jade on the physical combat side.
  • Break the Cutie: Happens to all of them, as the realities of being Child Soldiers kick in.
  • Child Soldier: Teenagers forced by destiny to partake in a war, a fact that gets thoroughly deconstructed.
  • Children Forced to Kill: During the Sack of Torus Filney, and a few times since, as a result of fighting the war.
  • Childhood Friends: Irma, Cornelia, and Hay Lin.
  • Elemental Powers: As per canon.
  • Innocence Lost: Happens to them all over the course of the war.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: They collectively have this reaction upon seeing what happens to Raythor after they frame him.
  • The Squad: A group of five, working together as a team.
  • These Hands Have Killed: They all suffer from this after first having to take lives during the Battle of Torus Filney.
  • Thou Shall Not Kill: They try not to kill anyone if they can avoid it. However, following from the Sack of Torus Filney, where they have no choice but to kill, this changes — they still don’t like killing and don’t do it lightly, but realize that they have to abandon this mindset out of pragmatism.
  • True Companions: They become this with each other and Jade.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Jade notes at one point that all the Guardians (save Will, whose dad the rest of the group hasn't seen yet), have mothers that are notably more attractive than their fathers.
  • World of Action Girls: The lot of them.

     Will Vandom
The Keeper of the Heart of Kandrakar and leader of the Guardians, Will has no elemental magic (yet) but makes up for it with an increasingly crafty strategic mind.

  • Badass Normal: In a manner of speaking — as a Guardian, she has flight and enhanced strength, but as she doesn’t currently have access to Quintessence because of the Veil, unlike the other Guardians she only has her fists to fight with.
  • Barehanded Blade Block: She pulls this during the Sack of Torus Filney, while clashing with a Phobos soldier. Presumably thanks to her Guardian strength and magic, there’s no mention of it hurting her any.
  • The Chessmaster: She evolves into this as she grows into her role as a wartime leader.
  • Covert Pervert: She keeps sneaking looks at Matt's butt during their dates.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She’s a pragmatist and becomes even more so as time goes by, but even she’s horrified by how Raythor is punished when they frame him.
  • Female Gaze: The narration notes how she keeps looking at Matt’s butt during their dates.
  • The Leader: Of the Guardians, as per canon.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: When Matt says he wants to join the fight on Meridian.
  • Not So Similar: Despite the above-mentioned similarity to Nerissa, Yan Lin notes that Will still has her compassion, which Nerissa lost long ago.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Evolves into this as time goes by.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: When Matt tells her the reason why he cannot stop helping people, she tells him she loves him.
  • What Measure Is a Mook?: Averted. During the Sack of Torus Filney, she kills a Phobos soldier in self-defense and is horrified to realize that one of the other soldiers is his brother, as it hadn't occurred to her before then that the bad guy's mooks could have families.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The other Guardians and Chan Clan members call her and Jade out for plotting to steal magical artifacts for the Rebellion during the subway fight with the Dark Hand, without bothering to tell the rest of them.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Her stunned reaction when she realizes that the prison break for Elyon's parents may have just unleashed a new potential enemy (namely Drago).

     Irma Lair
The Water Guardian.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Like in canon, Martin Tubbs is this to her. Though after Martin asks Irma why she can't give him a chance, she admits there's nothing wrong with him, it's just a mix of him coming on too strong and her sexuality. After revealing her sexuality to him, they agree to just be friends.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the animated canon, she seemed to be bisexual, as she only ever showed interest in boys but Word of God stated she was a lesbian. Here, she's a lesbian and that's it.
  • Bedmate Reveal: A cot rather than a bed, but early in Chapter 26, she's revealed to have cuddled up with Jade at some point in the night for some extra body heat to deal with the cold of the Infinite City room their group was sleeping in.
  • Better as Friends: She and Martin ultimately agree on this between them.
  • Covert Pervert: When she learns that the Oni in the mask Tarakudo put on Viper keeps complimenting her "rack and ass", as she puts it, she thinks that he's not exactly wrong about them being nice.
    • She deliberately latched onto Jade for warmth while they were sleeping in the Infinite City.
    • She makes a "joke" about using her throwing water balls at Jade for training as an excuse for seeing her in a wet t-shirt.
  • Gayngst: The reason she never came out of the closet before is that she felt unintentional peer pressure to act like she likes boys.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Gay?: She eventually explains to Martin she's a lesbian, which is why she's not interested in him.
  • I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: When she and Jade finally address their feelings for each other, they agree that it's for the best to stay Just Friends for the near future, since there's a chance that a Relationship Upgrade wouldn't work and might impact both their friendship and the overall team. They decide to wait until the war is over to experiment with a more serious relationship.
  • Making a Splash: Her power set.
  • Ship Tease: There have been hints of chemistry between her and Jade.
  • Those Two Guys: She and Jade quickly settle into this role.

     Taranee Cook
The Fire Guardian.

     Cornelia Hale
The Earth Guardian, whose Alpha Bitch facade hides some deep-rooted problems, and whose family has bigger skeletons in its closet than she realizes.

  • Break the Cutie: On top of having to deal with being a Child Soldier, she has to deal with the shock of learning of her father's criminal connections, and blaming herself for Elyon siding with Phobos.
  • Broken Ace: She comes off as a vapid and egotistical perfectionist, but this all stems from an inferiority complex she's desperately trying to mask.
  • Broken Pedestal: Her view of her father is ruined when she realizes that he's working for the Dark Hand.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Her power set.
  • Everyone Can See It: Her and Caleb's feelings for each other are extremely obvious even before they hook up.
  • Fainting: Her initial reaction to finding out that Elyon is the lost princess.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: It turns out that her Alpha Bitch persona is just a mask she wears in order to avoid any doubt or perceived weaknesses that might cause her to be less than the perfect girl she thinks she needs to be.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: This bit from Chapter 25 when she’s confronting Caleb over the situation with Aldarn, which is similar to her situation with Elyon.
"Just because he's your best friend that doesn't mean you should be justifying everything he does and blaming yourself for it!" Cornelia paused for a second, and then chuckled just like Caleb had done moments before. "Wow, I sounded just like the biggest hypocrite in the universe right there.”
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: As a result of her perception that she has to be perfect to live up to the expectations she thinks her father has for her.
  • It's All My Fault: She blames herself for Elyon running off with Cedric, due to driving her away by hiding her Hidden Heart of Gold.
  • The Perfectionist: Because she feels that she needs to be.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Because she never explained that her facade isn't her real personality, Elyon becomes convinced that she really is a self-absorbed Alpha Bitch, which ruins their friendship and pushes Elyon towards going to Meridian with Cedric.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: After her initial fainting spell, this is her reaction to finding out that Elyon is the lost Princess.

     Hay Lin
The Air Guardian, who in the new Merged Reality is distant cousins with the Chan Clan.
