Player Characters
Evann
Voiced by: Shin-ichiro Miki (Japanese) and Dean Cain (English)
The main protagonist. Evann is a Ranger, like his father was before him. Rather inexperienced, he is still a very talented and capable young man.- Audience Surrogate: He does have a defined personality of his own, but his development often gets set aside in favour of this.
- Berserk Button: Even a brief mention of Kroitz in the early game sets him off, though it's not made entirely clear why that is.
- Can't Drop the Hero: Evann cannot be removed from the party.
- Character Tic: Leaning forward in an almost doubled-overed position, usually when he's dropping a sardonic comment.
- Conveniently an Orphan: His father died prior to the start of the story, but there's never any mention of his mother whatsoever.
- Disc-One Nuke: His Sky Dragon Slash is easy to obtain before the end of Chapter One. At that stage of the game it's incredibly useful for wiping out regular enemies.
- HA HA HA—No: Directed at Kroitz, upon their reunion;Evann: "Ha ha ha! Same as always, stirring up a crowd! You're a peddler of lies!"
- The Hero
- Inconsistent Coloring: Both official art and his in-game model depict his eyes as blue, though his portrait art colours them gold.
- Jack of All Stats: Like the other Grandia protagonists; he eventually edges into Lightning Bruiser territory.
- The Leader: Begrudgingly, to begin with.
- My Nayme Is: Evann.
- Noble Male, Roguish Male: The Roguish to Kroitz's Noble, though a somewhat subverted example.Brandol: "Now [Kroitz] has grown up, become a colonel and is carrying out a brilliant operation. You, on the other hand, remain the little twerp you always were."
- Resigned to the Call: In the beginning he's begrudgingly forced to work with the military by Diene, after ignoring several of her letters of conscription.
- Sir Swears-a-Lot: He arguably drops the biggest Precision F-Strike of the series.
- Shock and Awe: Two of Evann's special moves are lightning-based.
- Smarter Than He Looks: Of the Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass type. Though presented as a typical Idiot Hero (which is even highlighted by the other characters on occasion) he regularly subverts expectations, and has incredibly good social and leadership qualities.
- Stock Shōnen Hero
Brandol
Voiced by: Hisao Egawa (Japanese) and Ed Dolan (English)
A tough and experienced sergeant in the Nortis Army. He is tasked, along with Carmyne, in assisting Evann with his assignment of investigating the elemental disturbances.- Big Eater
- The Big Guy: Shares this role with Ulk, though they're very much different types.
- Cannot Talk to Women: Wendy is the in-game example, but according to Carmyne, he's always been bad at it.
- Cultural Posturing: In favour of Nortis, directed at the Arcadian and Hazman party members when he first meets them. Jaid is quick to rebuff his opinion.
- Dumb Muscle: He's not unintelligent, per se, but he does put his foot in his mouth plenty of times.
- Mighty Glacier: He's faster than Ulk, though.
- Spin Attack: Two of Brandol's Special Moves have him swinging his sword around to damage nearly opponents: Spinning Slash and Cyclone Slash.
- Younger Than They Look: In the Japanese version, he's only 24. The English version attempts to rectify this, by giving him a massive age jump that places him at 38.
Carmyne
Voiced by: Yuko Mizutani (Japanese) and Cheryl Serio (English)
A soldier in the Nortis army, and is tasked with helping Evann in his assignment to investigate the Elemental Disorders. The opposite of Brandol, Carmyne is more of a carefree spirit, and prefers choice to the military's orders.- Jack of All Stats / Red Mage: She's fairly well-rounded; though early on she has balanced physical and magic skills, this soon has her overshadowed by other specialized characters in both areas.
- Jerkass Ball: During some post-game segments in Locca, including sticking her nose in Brandol and Wendy's relationship, intentionally trying to rile Lutina up to get a reaction, and having a brutal laughing fit at Jaid when he takes Ben's Wife's kindness the wrong way. With each case she's really just trying to help.
- My Nayme Is: Carmyne, as opposed to the name "Carmine", with identical pronounciation.
- Of Corsets Sexy: Her shirt is particularly form fitting, and has a low neckline to boot.
- Petal Power: Her strongest move, Rosette Slash.
- What Does He See in Her?: Regarding what may or may not have been happening between Diene and Kroitz.Carmyne: "You mean our superior, the Colonel? He's so young, and already a colonel! He deserves a better girl than Diene."
Jaid
Voiced by: Tetsu Inada (Japanese) and Ryan Halper (English)
A noble knight of Arcadia who fights for honor and justice. He joined Evann's team in order to fight the Elemental Disorder that took the life of an Arcadian princess whom he had promised to protect.- Butt-Monkey: The post-game segments in Locca really don't cut him any slack. He starts out having an awkward misunderstanding with Ben's Wife; he thinks she has feelings for him, but in reality she is really just being compassionate towards him because she thinks he's a single Dad to Titto. To top it off, he spends the rest of the post-game trying to fish with Ulk, to very little avail. This all takes a large toll on his pride and he'll be seen moping around the village now and again.
- Cultural Posturing: Downplayed compared to Brandol, but is still very much on the side of Arcadia and takes every opportunity to snark at the Nortis.
- The Lost Lenore: Has one in the "Lady" he failed to protect, who succumbed to the Elemental Disorder.
- Magic Knight: Is set up with decent attack strength alongside his insane amount of Mana Egg slots.
- My Nayme Is: Jaid, as opposed to Jade. The pronunciation is identical.
- The Snark Knight: A fairly literal example.
- The Summation: Gives a short one in the second ending, after Brandol states that he's still confused by the story's events.
Titto
Voiced by: Soichiro Hoshi (Japanese) and Rebecca Nash (English)
A young Arcadian boy who joins Evann's team in order to help fight the Elemental Disorder. He is very shy so he does not say much to those he is unfamiliar with - he likes to stick around with Jaid because he knows him, having met each other during an incident in which the young boy brazenly stole something of the knight's a long time ago.- Crippling Overspecialization: Has insane Agility and Speed.....But is dwarfed in every other possible area.
- Whilst his stats asides from AGI and SPG remain unimpressive throughout the game, he has a 3-hit combo by default. A good knife can easily upgrade him into a Glass Cannon.
- Fragile Speedster
- Older Than They Look
- Video Game Stealing: His Get Item Special Move allows you to get some rare items from monsters.
Ulk
Voiced by: Unshō Ishizuka (Japanese) and Ed Dolan (English)
A demi-human from the forest of Hazma, where the people live as one with nature. He joined Evann's team fighting against the Elemental Disorder after realizing it was an artificial anomaly. As he is the oldest member of the party, he has seen much of what the Elemental Disorder has wrought and wishes for no further innocents to be lost to it.- Expy: Of Mareg from Grandia II.
- The Big Guy: Of the Gentle Giant variety.
- Mighty Glacier: Slowest member of the team, but has the highest base defense. Shame about his Mana Egg slots, though.
Myam
Voiced by: Yukari Tamura (Japanese) and Ashley Erke (English)
A young humanoid from the forest of Hazma. She joined Evann's team because she wanted to aid those who are at risk from the Elemental Disorder. Myam is always full of energy, making her very enthusiastic but often impatient.- An Ice Person: Two of her special moves are ice elemental.
- Combat Medic: Given her "Recover All" skill and her ranged attacks, this is one way to build her.
- Fiery Red Head: Ironic that she's more of An Ice Person.
- Lightning Bruiser: Her initial set-up emphasizes her Act and Move, bolstered by a modest Strength.
- The Pollyanna: Has shades of this; the seriousness of the situations she finds herself in overshadowed entirely by her optimism.
- Redhead In Green
- Spell My Name With An S: The Japanese World Guidance artbook lists her name in English as "Myamm", but this is likely just an error.
Lutina
Voiced by: Tomoko Kawakami (Japanese) and Lisa Loeb (English)
A young Arcadian woman and a soldier in an elite Arcadian unit. Little is known of Lutina's past other than that she was raised from a young age to be an effective and deadly assassin for her people.- Fragile Speedster
- Glass Cannon: Lutina's offensive stats are as good as Evann's, but lord help you if she takes a hit.
- My Name Is ???: Averted. Her name is revealed in the battle interface when fighting her as a boss, before she is introduced by name in the cutscene that follows.
- She-Fu
- Sixth Ranger: Lutina isn't a member of the team assigned to neutralize the Elemental Disorder, and doesn't join the party until Kroitz's betrayal.
Non-Player Characters
Diene
Voiced by: Akiko Yajima (Japanese) and Jessica Halper (English)
A Lieutenant in the Nortis army. She is charged with the task of bringing Evann and the other members of his team together to neutralize the Elemental Disorder.- Aloof Dark-Haired Girl
- Character Tic: Bringing her hand to her shaking head, usually when another character drops a comment she finds exasperating.
- Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Though she doesn't seem to take it to heart too much;Evann: "Will you really be alright by yourself?"
Diene: "I can't believe I'm getting sympathy from a twerp like you! I must be really pathetic." - Expy: Of Leen from the first game (who herself is a Rei Ayanami Expy).
- Guest-Star Party Member: After the party temporarily fractures following Kroitz's betrayal, she and Evann venture to Escarre to scour for information. She'll follow Evann around and will interact with the townspeople (reminiscent of the party members from earlier Grandia games), but won't join in a combatitive role.
- Held Gaze: Shares a particularly poignant one with Kroitz in Locca, whilst they discuss the unfolding Elemental Disorder. At least, until Evann unintentionally interrupts...
- Inconsistent Coloring: Her eyes are brown in official art, but green in-game.
- Office Lady: Whilst she outranks Brandol and Carmyne, she's never seen in combat, delegated mostly to desk work instead.
- Only Sane Woman: In regards to both the main party and the Nortis Army as a whole.
- Raven Hair, Ivory Skin
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality
- That's an Order!: Diene makes a habit of treating Evann as her subordinate, even though she acknowledges he's still a civilian.Diene: "What you want doesn't matter. When you understand your position, come and talk to me."
- When She Smiles
Juston
An old adventurer who has settled down in Locca and lives there during the period of Elemental Disorder. While he does not assist the Nortis Army, he does provide stories and advice to Evann while he battles to stop it.
- Betting Mini-Game: Juston is a regular NPC throughout the main game, providing nothing more than a few lines of dialogue. However, defeating Quanlee unlocks his "Lucky Shuffle" game.
- Self-Plagiarism: Though a clearly intentional case. As a red-haired adventurer wearing blue clothing, he's an obvious Shout-Out to Justin from the first Grandia game.
- Interestingly his name in Japanese is read as "Giasti", which would more accurately translate to "Justy" rather than "Juston", giving the character more legitimacy as the real Justin rather than a Suspiciously Similar Substitute.
Kroitz
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese) and Mark Hamill (English)
A childhood rival of Evann, and currently supreme commander of the Nortis Army and its operations to neutralize the Elemental Disorder. He is an excellent commander but lacks sympathy and is often too harsh or strict towards others.- Ambition Is Evil: Deconstructed. He infers that his ruthless actions are for the progress of Nortis and humanity as a whole, but whether or not he's bluffing means very little in the long run; he's ultimately strung along by the prophecy that brings about the Big Bad.
- Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Likely gained his position in the army due to his strength rather than any of his leadership qualities. He's highly respected, either way.
- Badass Arm-Fold
- BFS: Crimson, particularly its Dragon Sword form.
- Break the Haughty
- Broken Ace: Following his defeat by Quanlee, and subsequently the party.
- Character Tic: Has a distinct pose with his hands folded behind his back; he usually musters this when dropping his authoritarian speeches.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Despite being a central character, he's unceremoniously written out before either of the endings occur. What Happened to the Mouse? would apply, were he not a central character up until that point.
- Climax Boss: Both his boss battles are fought in tandem, and bookend a large and important portion of storyline between them within which, the truth about Quanlee is revealed by Evol, and following a week's time skip, Quanlee himself appears.
- Colonel Badass: Straddles the line between this and Colonel Kilgore. He's highly respected despite the fact that he runs his division with an iron fist.
- Demoted to Dragon: After Quanlee arrives he takes over Kroitz's mind, using him as weapon against the party.
- Distressed Dude: Picks up the Distress Ball when he attacks Quanlee, and gets himself possessed in the process.
- Expy: Of Mullen from the first game, though this subvert expectations the further the story progresses. In turn, as a boss, he's near identical to Melfice from Grandia 2.
- Faux Affably Evil: Masks a lot of his underlying intentions with charisma early on, especially when speaking with Diene or the main party. It's less believable to the player thanks to a couple of scenes that show he's manipulating them all.
- Flunky Boss: Will consistantly use his 'Convene' move in battle to summon Kroitz Guards onto the field.
- The Gadfly: Towards Evann, though wanting to keep up appearances he keeps a lid on it a lot of the time;Kroitz: "Well, we do need a Ranger... It's just, I was hoping for a ''real'' one."
- Glory Hound
- Have You Come to Gloat?: Directed at Evann, after he saves Kroitz from Quanlee and brings him back to Locca;Evann: "You’ve lost your purpose, and dreams. Let those go, and you really have lost! Isn’t true defeat when you surrender and abandon your identity and dreams? I could never live with that!"
Kroitz: "Hah! Are you mocking me again?" - Held Gaze: With Diene in Locca, as they discuss the Elemental Disorder (though his ulterior motives are clear at this stage). Evann unintentionally interrupts this moment.
- Inconsistent Coloring: Both the official art and character portraits give him violet eyes. His in-game model, however, has red eyes.
- Jerkass Has a Point: He's scathingly critical of Evann when they meet again for the first time, in part because Evann consistently interjects Kroitz's attempts to explain the Elemental Disorder and his "plan" to end it;
- Jerk with a Heart of Jerk
- Kubrick Stare: In several of his portraits.
- Lightning Bruiser: In both of his boss battles, though with emphasis on the "lightning" aspect in the second round.
- Moral Sociopathy: He treats the lives of his men - and to an extent his own life - as disposable, but claims that his actions are ultimately in favour of the progress and advancement of Nortis, and of humanity.
- My Nayme Is: Subverted somewhat; Kroitz is a legitimate, albeit rare, anglicised version of "Kreuz". May be a case of Spell My Name With An S if you consider that he was likely written and named specifically for Takehito Koyasu - creator of Weiß Kreuz.
- Noble Male, Roguish Male: The Noble to Evann's Roguish. Somewhat subverted by the end.
- Officer and a Gentleman: Deconstructed. He's well-spoken and charismatic and even keeps this up after he betrays the party, revealing he's not as pleasant as he was pretending to be, a ruse he was using in order to manipulate them. Evann, from his prior experiences, can see right through this facade from the beginning.
- One Head Taller: He's 6'1, and notably looms above Diene, who is 5'4. With Evann as well, who is 5'5; this is emphasized in the official novel art◊.
- The Rival: Kroitz has been Evann's rival since their childhood.
- This Cannot Be!: Between Evol's reveal of the truth of Quanlee, and Kroitz's subsequent Villainous Breakdown;Kroitz: "That is not acceptable! I don't care what [Quanlee] is! If I can't have him, then everything is meaningless!"
- Trauma Conga Line / Humiliation Conga: Somewhat because of his own inability to call it quits. After losing to the party in the Starry Corridor (though he refuses to believe he actually lost), Kroitz is informed by Evol that everything he'd been doing in pursuit of Quanlee was premeditated. For the following week, he disappears, having (according to Diene), been "relieved of duty" - implying also that he lost his rank and was removed from the army for his actions. When Quanlee appears he then throws himself at him, but immediately winds up easily defeated, captured and possessed by him. Quanlee then releases a mindless Kroitz back up against the party. After losing a second time, he is rescued and taken back, unconscious, to Locca by Evann.
- Ungrateful Bastard: He believes Evann inflicts a Cruel Mercy on him, by saving him from Quanlee instead of killing him in battle. Understandably, Evann is less than impressed by this.
- Unusual Eyebrows
Specto
A scientist and researcher for the Nortis Army. An intellectual but timid person who was once seen as untrustworthy by others, Specto works closely with Kroitz in investigating the ruins.
Evol
A scientist researching into the ultimate evolution, and the caretaker of the ruins found within the Starry Corridor. He is responsible for the creation of Quanlee - the final evolutionary form, as believed by the ancient race that once inhabited the planet.
- Ancient Keeper: Of the Dark Ruins, the Birthplace of Quanlee, and originally of Quanlee himself.
- Black Cloak
- Meaningful Name: "Humanity's Evolution" is supposedly the intention behind his research, and possibly the entire reason for his existence.
- Milking the Giant Cow
- The Unfought: He is killed off by Kroitz during a cutscene.
Quanlee
Voiced by: Romi Park (Japanese) and Cheryl Serio (English)
The ultimate evolved being created by people of ancient times.- Big Bad: Raised to believe he's entitled to complete domination of the world.
- Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Subjective, though there's an obvious irony in his "human" appearance resembling that of a harmless child. Lore found in the Elemental Ruins even describes him as both "an angel and a demon".
- Fetus Terrible: Subverted; it's revealed towards the end he had actually been born 50 years before the story.
- God Is Flawed
- Humanoid Abomination
- Ultimate Life Form: Is quite literally described as this.
- Utopia Justifies the Means: He was born to theoretically create eternal peace throughout humanity by controlling everyone's minds collectively, thus bringing them together as a single "entity".
