Joined Far East Branch: 2071
Joined Cradle: 2074
God Arc: 2nd Generation
Weapon Type: [Highly-Customizable]

The first New-Type God Eater of the Fenrir Far East Branch. He or she is a member of the 1st Unit and later became leader after Lindow was declared MIA. While a Silent Protagonist for most of the main game, dialogue makes it clear the protagonist is a caring, good person with exceptional combat abilities. While nameless in the games, the protagonist has been named in other works: Yuu Kannagi for the male protagonist and Aki Tamashiro for the female protagonist.

Yuu and Aki are canonically separate charactersnote . Character entry and tropes for Aki goes here.

  • 100% Adoration Rating: He or she is beloved pretty much by every member at the Far East Branch or people who they meet in general. Lampshaded on his or her, database entry in God Eater 2.
  • The Ace: Starting off as rookie with no prior training, they manage themselves very well and the game itself makes sure of it. During the Burst Arc they get 2 rookies under their teaching, because they are that good. By God Eater 2, they are recognized by all members of the Far East Branch as being one of their best God Eaters.
  • Canon Name: Yuu Kannagi. Unless the players are able to import a God Eater Burst save into God Eater 2, the game automatically uses the former as the original protagonist for GE1. This also carries over into the English version of Rage Burst where, due to players being unable to transfer save files due to GE2 having never been localized, the game automatically goes with Yuu Kannagi as well.
  • Celibate Hero: Despite the below the protagonist didn't particularly show any interest in romance do to being the silent protagonist but the anime gives a tragic reason. Averted with the manga where it's clear that he and Alisa have a mutual interest in each other.
  • Chick Magnet: All girls from Alisa to Hibari to even Tsubaki seem to warm up to the burst protagonist and the bond events in Resurrection increases this to Erina. It even happens when playing as a female. However, only Alisa, Licca, Hibari, Annette, Kanon and Erina seem to actually see the protagonist as much more than just a friend, judging by various lines and cutscenes. The infamous "Harem Beach Paradise" chapter in God Eater Offshot put this trope Up to Eleven.
  • Field Promotion: After Lindow goes MIA, Johannes appoints him/her as the new leader of the 1st Division, Lindow's previous post. Obviously, this surprised some at the Far East Branch, considering the protagonist is just a newcomer.
  • Fighting Clown: The protagonist can be dressed in full mascot costume which doesn't hinder them at all in God Eating, and is quite hilarious when appearing in serious scenes in that getup.
  • The Ghost: The protagonist is mentioned a few times in God Eater 2, but never makes a direct appearance him/herself.
  • Hair Colors: Customizable at character select and can be changed at any point throughout the game.
  • The Hero: If being called "The Protagonist" indicates anything...
  • Heroic BSoD: Suffers a massive one upon discovering that Lindow had become Corrosive Hannibal, especially since they know what the "cure" entails.
  • Heroic Mime: Played with. They talk while out in the field, but they are silent during most cutscenes. There are a few exceptions, however:
    • The first is the beginning of the Burst storyline, where the protagonist serves as the narrator for the first cutscene. However, some may not immediately realize this on their first playthrough, especially if their chosen voice is not particularly distinct, and especially since the protagonist isn't shown speaking.
    • More famously, the protagonist speaks in a scene near the end of the Burst storyline, telling Lindow not to give up on his life before ripping Corrosive Hannibal through the mouth with both their own and Lindow's God Arcs and punching through Corrosive Hannibal's Core. It's as awesome as it sounds.
Protagonist: "Don't run away! Don't run away from living! That's an order!"
    • A third time happens in God Eater Resurrection, where the protagonist once more speaks in the cutscene following the fight against Arius Nova by way of issuing commands, as well as thanking Shio as her memory fragment leaves.
  • The Leader: Becomes the leader of the First Unit after Lindow goes MIA.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To the First Unit, after Lindow seemingly dies. Especially seen with poor Alisa, who Took a Level in Badass because he/she was there.
  • Morph Weapon: Their New-Type God Arc (in contrast to Old-Types, which are one of the three gun or blade classes), can transform between a BFS and a BFG, as well as a Shield. Also, unlike other New-Type NPCs like Alisa, Annette and Federico, the Gun, Blade and Shield parts are also changeable — while New-Type NPCs have distinct gun, blade, and shield equips (short blade over long, assault gun over sniper, etc.), the protagonist can use all nine equipment types. Come Resurrection, the protagonist is the only one in the entire Far East branch to even be capable of using polearm-style melee weapons, as in Hammers, Spears and Scythes.
  • No Name Given: Except in the various light novel/manga adaptations, the protagonist is canonically male and most often known as "Yuu Kannagi".
    • In The Spiral Fate, the protagonist is known as "Ryo Kagami".
    • The anime has a unique and original protagonist, "Lenka Utsugi".
    • The Western version of Resurrection names him "Shinji Kagura".
    • Thanks to Pachi-Slot God Eater, the female protagonist finally has a canon name: "Aki Tamashiro".
  • Not So Stoic: The protagonist is pretty stone faced throughout most of the main storyline, but come Burst they start to be put through the ringer and as such start having more emotional outbursts. The first notable occurence is when Lindow is confirmed to be alive, but Ren tells them that a God Eater that's been violently separated from his God Arc is going to have to be put down like a rabid dog. The normally gentle protagonist slams Ren into a vending machine for even suggesting that.
  • Official Couple: In the manga Yuu Kannagi ends up with Alisa to a more-or-less confirmed state in the manga. There is a fair amount of Ship Tease between Alisa and the protagonist in-game due to Purely Aesthetic Gender they are a Celibate Hero. Lenka, however is oblivious to her crush do to his own issues.
  • Protagonist Without a Past: You can answer a couple questions in conversation to fill in small details, but how you answer makes no difference.
  • Purely Aesthetic Gender: Due in no small part to your status as a Silent Protagonist.
  • The Silent Bob: Despite lacking dialogue in most cutscenes, the protagonist manages to be fairly emotive through various facial expressions and different looks/nods.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Played with a bit. While the protagonist is definitely The Hero regardless, in the original game's story, most of the focus is on Soma, with the protagonist taking on something of a Deuteragonist role. In the Burst storyline, however, the protagonist firmly takes the role of... well, the protagonist, with Lindow taking over as Deuteragonist.
  • Telepathy: According to Dr. Sakaki, this, together with the ability to change the God Arc's mode at will, is apparently one of the abilities of a New-Type God Eater. This may also explain why they were able to instantly revive Alisa after a trauma-induced coma from unintentionally (seemingly) killing Lindow, detect the presence of Ren, and discover that Lindow had been turned into Corrosive Hannibal. Comes into play as a plot point in two of the manga adaptations, where Alisa learns or passes on sensitive information to the protagonist by using this skill.
  • Took a Level in Badass: By the end of the game. Some of the later missions aren't easy on a first attempt and/or if you haven't adequately prepared, and you'll be forced to to clear them solo — which gives you some idea of just how strong the protagonist is considered to be.
  • Virtual Paper Doll: The outfits and accessories that the player can wear come in all sorts of varieties, however none of them affect the player's abilities. Want to fight a murdering Eldritch Abomination in your underwear? Have at it.
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: They can be dispatched to fight Aragamis while wearing just bikini/beach shorts.
  • World's Best Warrior: By the end of the first game they are the best God Eater of their branch and well revered in the sequel.

Yuu Kannagi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuu.jpg
Voiced by: Shunzou Miyasaka [Pachi-Slot onlynote ] (Japanese), Takeshi Mori [In God Eater Resonant Ops] (Japanese)
Joined Far East Branch: 2071
Joined Cradle: 2074
God Arc: 2nd Generation
Weapon Type: Long Blade/Assault Gun

The first game's canonical protagonist. He made his first appearance in the Light Novel God Eater: Knockin' On Heaven's Door. In most media adaptations, Yuu primarily serves as a supporting character in most media where he appears in aside from God Eater 2: Undercover where he takes center stage.

  • Accidental Pervert: Towards Alisa in The Summer Wars and towards Lydia in Undercover.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The most notorious example in the series due to various artists. He has light brown for the official artworks and light novels, brown for in-game appearance, dirty blonde for The Summer Wars manga, blonde for the other mangas, and lastly a mix of light brown and blonde for Pachi-Slot version.
  • Badass Longcoat: His Cradle uniform as shown in Resonant Ops is the same as Lindow and Soma's.
  • Bishōnen: A given considering that his appearance is taken from the default male protagonist.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: In Undercover, he get his right arm bitten by the Kyuubi, while fighting it.
  • Chick Magnet: A minor example in Burst and The Summer Wars, until he become a full-fledged chick magnet in Resurrection. See the Protagonist's same trope above for more details.
  • Close-Range Combatant: His original and preferred fighting style as shown in light novel/manga adaptations. This is the reason the protagonist is always in blade-form in the game's cutscenes. A DLC NPC known as "Alisa/Alternate 2" from Resurrection serves as an exact copy of Yuu's original fighting style and God Arc.
  • Gatling Good: The gun form of his God Arc, but he only use it on very rare occasions.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Prefers using his God Arc's bladed form in combat.
  • Mysterious Past: His past has yet to have been revealed. This is likely due to the fact that his counterpart in the games has no stated history either.
  • Nice Guy: A kind and friendly young man.
  • Shirtless Scene: Yuu in a few chapters of The Summer Wars when at the beach. Also possible to pull off in-game as well with the swimwear for the male protagonist. He also has a brief one in Undercover.

Ryo Kagami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryo_3.jpg
Age: 18
Joined Far East Branch: 2071
God Arc: 2nd Generation
Weapon Type: Long Blade/Assault Gun

The main protagonist of God Eater: The Spiral Fate, which is also the only media where he appears so far. While Yuu Kannagi is the canonical protagonist, Ryo is chronologically the first protagonist in God Eater series.

Lenka Utsugi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lenka.jpg
Voiced by: Ryuichi Kijima (Japanese) and Robbie Daymond (English)note
Age: 15
Joined Far East Branch: 2071
God Arc: 2nd Generation
Weapon Type: Long Blade/Blast Gun

Original character and main protagonist in anime series. Unlike the other protagonists, Lenka has an actual past which is later delved into compared to both Yuu and Ryo.

  • Anime Hair: The most unrealistic hairstyle than everyone else. He almost makes the other characters with anime hairstyles including Silva Orcride look normal in comparison.
  • Anti-Hero: He's an idealist in a crumbling world, he wants the best for humanity, and his gift is stated to be his Heroic Resolve. What muddies up his status as a straight-up hero is that he's fueled by his hatred for all Aragamis.
  • Bad Dreams: Suffers from these.
  • BFS: Has a big freaking God Arc in Episode 12 and 13.
  • Canon Foreigner: Can be recreated as a Player Character in Resurrection. Also with Adaptational Badass.
  • Custom Uniform: Lenka's uniform is slightly modified especially the pants and boots. He is also wearing his signature blue cape instead of regular Fenrir formal jacket.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: How his backstory was revealed in Episode 10.
  • Determinator: The very core of his character.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: The good one. Lenka's entire upper body is full of scars but his face is clean.
  • Happily Adopted: With the Utsugi Family before their death.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Lenka is this after the deaths of his adoptive family, more specifically after his sister Iroha dies. To the point of pursuing vengeance against the Aragami even at the cost of his own life.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Rebellion God Arc.
  • Hot-Blooded: In fairly stark contrast to Yuu Kannagi and even the different personalities of the in-game voices are relatively tame.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Lenka has to be taught by Sakuya how to shoot his gun and in addition, didn't know how to switch between gun and blade mode of his God Arc.
  • Humble Hero: Lenka comes a long way since his brasher days at the story's beginning. He's no longer as Hot-Blooded, and has learned to adopt a more submissive behavior.
  • Idiot Hero: Not precisely stupid, but he lets his emotions get the better of him especially early on. The show deconstructs the typical shounen examples by showing the realistic consequence of rushing blindly on willpower alone, and thereby ignoring the plan that his superiors have set up.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: At least in starting episodes. Lenka have tendencies to charge at the Aragami without thinking.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: When Lenka and Alisa first meet in Episode 3.
  • Mega Manning: How Lenka gets the hang of his New-Type God Arc in Episode 3. Alisa seems perturbed at this.
  • Morph Weapon
  • Nice Guy: Lenka used to be this one, until a death of his adoptive family turned him into a vengeful being.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: In Episode 1, Lenka refuses to leave Eric who tells him to get away so he can live.
  • Not Blood Siblings: Lenka and Iroha are this due in part to Lenka being an adopted child.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: In final episode, his hair turned gold while performing his final blow against Dyaus Pita. It revert back to normal after his recovery from injuries.
  • The Power of Hate: What really motivates him is his desire to eradicate every Aragami on the planet.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: It's very easy to say that Lenka's entire life is one. But after the Aragamis killed his entire adoptive family, he promised to kill them all.
  • Say Your Prayers: Despite Lenka saying in Episode 2 that he no longer believes in prayers, in Episode 5, before the land bridge collapses with Lenka, Alisa, and the Dyaus Pita, the last thing Lenka does before they fall into the river is pray to God.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: In Episode 1, as soon as Lenka realizes there's no one to send to defend the Aragami invasion, he run out of the room, steals his God Arc, and runs out to battle.
  • Shirtless Scene: During his aptitude test in Episode 1.
  • Sole Survivor: Of the small village where he grew up.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He regained his Nice Guy status once again after his Character Development.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: He lacks combat experience and skills, but his hard-hitting attacks, durability, and agility make up for it.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: It is revealed that Lenka's God Arc's Oracle cells are consuming his body, and should he continue to use his God Arc, he will die.

Shinji Kagura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinji_7.jpg
Voiced by: None[note ]
Joined Far East Branch: 2071
Transferred to Russia Branch: 2071
God Arc: 2nd Generation
Weapon Type: [Highly-Customizable] (default is Long Blade/Assault Gun)

The canon protagonist of God Eater Resurrection, replacing Yuu Kannagi for said game's localized Western version. Story about him can be found in God Eater official English website, starting his diary from Log 1 to Log 26.

  • Cultural Translation: The canon main protagonist for the Western version of Resurrection. Though the database entry for the GE1 protagonist in Rage Burst still acknowledges as Yuu Kannagi instead.
  • The Hero
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Subverted. Shinji is impatient and always eager to go on a mission, but he is very cautious, always prepared and thinks twice before he acts. The only time he went straight to this trope is he tried to take on a wandering Vajra all by himself, putting him to a temporary coma.
  • Morph Weapon
  • Nice Guy: The only drawback of Shinji's kind-hearted personality is he doesn't get along to those who have high-and-mighty attitude, notably Alisa. His diary's "Log 24" confirmed this.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: With his sister, Reika.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Shinji's backstory shares a remarkable similarity with that of Lenka Utsugi. A major difference being that Shinji was not adopted and his family was blood-related to him.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: Non-punishment example. Shinji later transferred to Fenrir Russia Branch some time between Log 26 and 27. Which is something of a nod to how the original GE1 Protagonist ends up going on a mission with Lindow and Tsubaki in Europe during the events of GE2.
  • Younger Than They Look: He look like in 20's, but he is only underage teenage boy.

    Lindow (SPOILERS

Lindow Amamiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/01_lindow.jpg
Click here for GE2RB artwork (MASSIVE SPOILER!!!)
Voiced by: Hiroaki Hirata (Japanese) and Kyle Hebert (English)
Age: 26 (1) / 29 (2)
Joined Far East Branch: 2061
Joined Cradle: 2074
God Arc: 1st Generation (later 2nd Generation)
Weapon Type: Long Blade (later Long Blade/Assault Gun)

Team Captain of the 1st Unit, which the Protagonist belongs to. May joke around a bit much, but he's serious about his job and a well-respected member of the Far East Branch. He goes MIA during the Moon in the Welkin mission, and undergoes Aragami Infection, turning him into the Corrosive Hannibal. After being rescued by the protagonist, he resumed his work for the Fenrir Far East branch.

  • The Ace: Well revered as one of the best God Eaters that the Far East Branch has produced. He's even rumored to have taken down an Ouroboros by himself, which is revealed to have actually happened during the Burst storyline. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that, excluding the series player characters, Lindow is the most skill God Eater period.
  • And I Must Scream: He's aware of his actions as the Corrosive Hannibal, however he lacks full control. He can't stop himself from attacking his fellow God Eaters or warn them to get away from him.
  • Badass Longcoat: A unique and awesome one fitting the badass that he is. After you beat the main storyline you can even make it for yourself. His Cradle uniform also this in the sequel, combined with a gold gauntlet.
  • Baleful Polymorph: Mutates into the Corrosive Hannibal.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Lindow sounds very audibly pissed when he goes into Burst Mode through the effects of the 'Beloved' and 'Friendship' Skills.
    Lindow: That bastard!
  • BFS: Corroded Lindow uses a Buster Blade produced from his body in the same manner as Shio's God Arc.
  • Came Back Strong: After returning due to the Protagonist's miraculous rescue, he becomes a New-Type God Eater, with not only the perks that come with it, but also the added benefits of becoming immune to most dangerous status effects, including Stun.
  • The Casanova: He occasionally blows off a mission because he has a "hot date" lined up. They're excuses to cover for both his special jobs as a Unit leader and his investigations into the Ark Project.
  • Chainsaw Good: Uses the chainsaw blade type for his God Arc.
  • Chekhov M.I.A.: For the duration of the main storyline.
  • Custom Uniform: Most of Fenrir uniforms are too rookie-ish for him, Lindow is wearing a Commando uniform, perfectly fit for his leader position.
  • Dead Guy Junior: In the sequel, he and Sakuya have a child named Ren.
  • Draconic Humanoid: A "Corroded" version of Lindow who has begun but not yet fully completed his transformation into the Corrosive Hannibal is an unlockable character in 2.
  • Empathic Weapon: Lindow's God Arc personified itself as Ren during the Burst story.
  • A Father to His Men: His number one priority is to get every man home.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: At the end of the Burst storyline.
  • Happily Married: With Sakuya at the end of the Burst story. The marriage is still strong in the sequel and they have a child together.
  • He Knows Too Much: Seemingly offed by Johannes, with Alisa as the Unwitting Pawn, for delving too much into Johannes's involvement in the insane Ark Project.
  • Heroic Build: The game doesn't show it off much, but Lindow is shown to be very physically built, likely because being a God Eater requires a lot of physical work to do so.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: While he didn't have much choice in the manner, he single handedly holds off a Prithvi Mata to buy everyone else time to escape. However, the he doesn't die, instead his God Arc bracelet is damaged and he begins turning into an Aragami before being saved by the party.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Soma.
  • Hunk: Tall and athletic build.
  • The Leader: Of the 1st Unit.
  • The Men First: He has one standing order: "Don't die." Lindow is very firm on this, always pushing for people to survive over the mission.
  • Mentor Archetype: Acts this way for the player character and Alisa, guiding them and instilling them with what he believes would make them good God Eaters. Unlike most, Lindow is actually still a bit young and is very skilled despite his mentor role.
  • The Mole: He was tasked by the higher-ups at Fenrir to investigate Johannes's Ark Project.
  • Not Quite Dead: Managed to hold off a Prithvi Mata, only to have his Armlet badly damaged and subsequently devoured by a Dyaus Pita, causing Oracle Cell contamination in his body. He was saved by Shio at the last minute.
  • Number Two: Lindow becomes a Second in Command due to his absence, and The Protagonist is now a Lieutenant.
  • One-Man Army: Took an Ouroboros down by himself. Gameplay wise, Lindow is one of the best party members because he is incredibly skilled, often being able to do this with ease.
  • Peek-a-Bangs: They cover his left eye, while Tsubaki (his sister) has bangs that cover her right eye.
  • Shirtless Scene: Seen as the Aragami cells begin to mutate his body.
  • Shock and Awe: His God Arc's element is Spark and you can make it for yourself after beating the main storyline. Ironically, this is also an element that he's weak to as the Corrosive Hannibal in Burst.
  • Smoking Is Cool
  • Spell My Name with an "S": In the Japanese version, his code name reads "Rindou" (in English). This was changed to Lindow for the English version.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: 182cm (6'0").
  • Walking Spoiler: Especially his entire existence in God Eater 2.

    Sakuya

Sakuya Tachibana/Amamiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/02_sakuya.jpg
Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara (Japanese) and Michelle Ruff (English)
Age: 21 (1) / 24 (2)
Joined Far East Branch: 2065
God Arc: 1st Generation
Weapon Type: Sniper Gun

Vice Captain of the 1st Unit and also a Sniper Ace Medic. A reliable senior who gets along well with just about everyone, as well as a long-time acquaintance of Lindow and Tsubaki. She takes on missions at the Field Leader level occasionally and oversees an early training mission. She is also a former mission counter girl before Hibari took her place.

  • Action Girl: Like all female God Eaters. She's one of the more experienced God Eaters in the Far East Branch though.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Goes with her Stripperific outfit.
  • Boobs of Steel: Sakuya's an Action Girl in a Crapsack World and she's also got the biggest rack on the cast.
  • The Bus Came Back: In God Eater Resonant Ops she makes a formal return to the front lines after being absent in God Eater 2 due to being on maternity leave after her marriage to Lindow.
  • Combat Medic: She's the best healer in the game, having a kit and weapon focused on it, and is the one most likely to heal during combat. It gets to the point of Crutch Character since she is that useful.
  • Cool Big Sis: Most obvious with Alisa, though she's essentially this to everyone at the Far East Branch.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Over the course of the story she has to deal with losing her boyfriend, taking care of the team he left behind and help stop the Apocalypse by killing her former boss. It doesn't get much better by the time Burst rolls around and her boyfriend turns out to be alive but has now turned into a bloodthirsty monster. Thankfully the team gets him back, and in the end Sakuya and Lindow get married and start a family.
  • Friendly Sniper: She has one of the lowest rates of friendly fire, apologizes if she hits you, and is one of the best healers in the game.
  • The Ghost: Mentioned several times by Lindow in God Eater 2, but she doesn't make an appearance herself.
  • Happily Married: With Lindow at the end of the Burst story.
  • Jiggle Physics: And extremely noticeable, to the point where it's almost distracting in otherwise serious conversations. Everytime Sakuya so much as walks, her boobs visibly shake.
  • Number Two: Vice Captain of the 1st Unit.
  • Ms. Fanservice: The most notable example, even if Alisa tends to be the one known as this in the community.
  • This Is Something She's Got to Do Herself: After Lindow's "death", Sakuya discovers a disc containing his report on Aegis Island, and decides to continue what he left behind. She tried to keep this secret from the Protagonist and Alisa, but after retrieving Lindow's Armlet from a Dyaus Pita (the missing link required to fully unlock the disc's secrets) she finally tells them the truth.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit
  • Show Girl Skirt
  • Stripperific: She wears a piece of cloth for a top and some hotpants underneath her sarong.
  • She's Got Legs: In addition to her Boobs of Steel, her outfit shows off her legs a bit.
  • Sideboob
  • Vapor Wear: She's obviously not wearing a bra.
  • Who Wears Short Shorts?: Though this isn't quite as obvious due to her Show Girl Skirt.

    Soma

Soma Schicksal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/03_soma.jpg
Voiced by: Kazuya Nakai (Japanese) and Yuri Lowenthal [Games], Crispin Freeman [Anime] (English)
Age: 18 (1) / 21 (2)
Joined Far East Branch: 2064
Joined Cradle: 2074
God Arc: 1st Generation
Weapon Type: Buster Blade

A member of the 1st Unit, Soma has served since he was twelve. He's not fond of teamwork and prefers working alone. Since he was injected with the Bias Factor while his mother was pregnant, he was used as the base for future God Eaters.

  • Ambiguously Brown: His father's fair skin and his mother's dark skin average out to a nice tan shade.
  • Black Swords Are Better: His signature God Arc Evil One/Rejector is a black variant of Sawblade-type Buster Blade and Resistor-type Tower Shield. However, it turned white after the Arda Nova incident after devouring a part of Shio's core.
  • Character Development: Soma starts off as being emotionally distant from his fellow teammates and not really caring about anything or anyone, simply filling his life with the act of killing Aragami. This changes over the course of the story, specifically the moments when he meets Shio and bonds with her. By the sequel Soma is practically a different person, albeit for the better.
  • Chick Magnet: He becomes one after the first game, as shown in The 2nd Break. He doesn't seem to care though.
  • Child Soldiers: He's been a God Eater since he was 12 years old.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Male version. Initially, Soma is rather blunt and antisocial, but he slowly gets over it the longer the story goes on.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: According to Shun, most God Eaters who accompanied Soma are often killed on a mission. The latest and probably the last victim is Eric. This is how Soma earn his nickname, "Shinigami" ("Death God" in English version).
  • Establishing Character Moment: Kills an Aragami that just murdered a teammate without batting an eyelash and then is the only one who isn't shook up by his death or mourns him. Soma is a cold, calculating professional that has been hardened by growing up in a Crapsack World and being The Jinx with so many other teammates having died on him before. Thankfully he goes through Character Development to change this.
  • Eye Scream: In God Eater 3, Soma lost his left eye and gain a scar over it.
  • Fingerless Gloves: He wears them in each of his appearances.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Since he was injected with the Bias Factor while his mother was still pregnant, he is technically half-Aragami.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Lindow.
  • I Work Alone: He grows out of this. Gameplay-wise however, his AI doesn't — if an Aragami is winding up for an attack, Soma takes defensive action ridiculously early, giving the player clues about enemy attack patterns.
  • Ineffectual Loner: He doesn't play well with others, but he learns to get over it.
  • In the Hood: The only time he takes off his hood is in the epilogue of the God Eater story. In God Eater 2, he discards it outright for a white coat.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's aloof and abrasive, but he cares about his fellow God Eaters much more than he'd like to admit.
  • The Jinx: He is viewed as one by some God Eaters, considering how many have died when in the field with him. This ends eventually: in his final profile sheet, it's noted that the teams he joins up with for missions have the lowest death rates, and in the one before that, he's even slated for a promotion to Field Leader, though he insists on staying with the First Unit.
  • Man in White: His new look in God Eater 2 includes a solid white long coat.
  • Meaningful Rename: During the time of God Eater 3, he goes by the name of "Ein" which means "1" in German, fitting since he's half german. Though the true reason for the name change and it's meaning has yet to be revealed.
  • Mighty Glacier: His unlockable Personal Ability can make him both hard-hitting and durable.
  • The Reveal: His full name is actually Soma Schicksal, with Johannes von Schicksal being his father.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Manly Man to Eric's Sensitive Guy.
  • The Smart Guy: In 2 he takes over as the Den's head of Aragami research, as Dr. Sakaki is busy acting as director. He clearly inherited his parents' scientific acumen.
  • The Stoic
  • Stone Wall: His survival rate is very high, but he has low strength. Contrast Brendan's Glass Cannon.
  • Super Prototype: Due to the experiment performed on Soma before he was born, he is actually half-Aragami and is the original God Eater.
  • When He Smiles: Can only be seen smiling around Shio. At least only to her, initially...

A new team member of the 1st Unit along with the Protagonist. While he performs fine in combat, he doesn't hold well with drills and lectures.

  • Animal Motif: Has a spider on the back of his shirt and a web pattern on the front, though he doesn't act like a spider in any way.
  • Bare Your Midriff: With both of his available outfits in the first game!
  • Best Friend: His character episode in God Eater 2, shows that he considers the Protagonist of the first game as this.
  • Book Dumb: He regularly falls asleep during Dr. Sakaki's lectures.
  • Bratty Half-Pint
  • Bromantic Foil: Can come off as this for the male Protagonist, though YMMV on how much of a foil one can be to a Silent Protagonist.
  • Combat Medic: In 2, he'll fire recovery bullets if the protagonist runs out of health. Good positioning will ensure his bullets hit you before you're incapacitated.
  • Fingerless Gloves
  • Friendly Sniper: He's one of the friendliest guys in the game and he sticks to using guns.
  • Heroic BSoD: Dealt with one when he was forced to choose between staying behind and be killed in the Devouring Apocalypse or move with his family away to Aegis. He ultimately decides to stay and stop Johannes' Ark Project, after realizing that the Ark Project will only evacuate select God Eaters and their families up to the first degree (around a mere 1,000 survivors, not counting Johannes himself) when his younger sister Nozomi asked him if he could bring her friends.
  • Keet: Loud, energetic and raring to go at all times.
  • The Leader: Of Far East Branch's 1st Unit in 2.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Some shades of this, and Alisa berates him for being careless. He's less so in actual combat.
  • Older and Wiser: Come 2, he becomes less reckless and more responsible, though he hasn't lost his energetic streak. He even takes Erina and Emil as proteges.
  • Sadistic Choice: Betray his fugitive comrades and support the Director's insane Ark project to guarantee the safety of his family? Or keep his family at risk in the Outer Ghetto while sparing the remnants of humanity from obliteration? He ultimately decides to stay for his friends.
  • Shonen Hair: His new hairstyle in God Eater 2.

God Arc: 2nd Generation
Weapon Type: Long Blade/Assault Gun

She is the second New-Type God Eater of the 1st Unit, transferring from Fenrir's Russian branch. She is subject to special therapy sessions on a regular basis.

  • Action Girl: Like all female God Eaters, she can, and does, kick plenty of Aragami ass.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: In the anime, she suffers from flashbacks from when her parents were eaten by Dyaus Pita, which she suppresses by taking medicine. In fact, at the end of Episode 5, which teases Alisa's backstory, a bunch of words appear on screen, one of them being "PTSD".
  • The Atoner: Not that she needs to, but she feels the burden of having apparently killed Lindow weighing heavily on her. She spends the latter half of the Burst arc trying to bring back Lindow, to absolve herself of that "sin", and at the end she mails the Protagonist, thanking him/her for helping her lift the burden away.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Her outfits in God Eater Burst and God Eater 2.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Odin, dva, tri...
  • Character Development: Upon her arrival she initially passes off as an insufferable Alpha Bitch, but as time passed (especially after her Freak Out! which apparently killed Lindow), she gradually developed into a considerate, caring God Eater, as well as a big-sister figure for Shio. Her AI even changes to reflect her altered outlook, gaining recovery bullets and learning to share Aragami Bullets with others.
  • Cleavage Window: One of the most consistent parts of her visual design is that her outfits pretty much always show some of her chest, usually from below. It even gets Lampshaded in Resonant Ops!
  • Combat Medic: Many consider her to be one of the most useful AI teammates. She heals you often, and being the only New-Type companion in the original game, was the only way single players could make use of Link Burst and Condensed Bullets.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Both her parents were killed right before her eyes during a game of hide-and-seek as a child, leaving her an emotional wreck. As if that wasn't bad enough she was later conscripted into the New-Type God Eater program and brainwashed into assassinating Lindow under the impression that he was the Aragami that killed her parents.
  • Demoted to Extra: Though she still appears in the sequel, Alisa's importance has diminished to the overall plot though she and the former 1st Unit members of the first game still lend a hand to the Blood Unit every now and then.
  • Dude Magnet: She attracts a lot of guys attention and has more than one fan club among them.
  • Field Promotion: Becomes the Far East Branch acting Director as of Resonant Ops.
  • Fingerless Gloves: Only her right hand.
  • Freak Out!: You've been warned by Dr. Oguruma before you even meet her that she's mentally unstable and requires therapy every day, so this was inevitable.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: After her Heroic BSoD, Alisa will literally be useless in any mission until you complete her training quests. She then becomes one of the best AI teammates, still showing this trope. Due to your value to her, she prioritizes supporting you with healing bullets and Condensed Bullets, while not firing if you're in her line of fire.
  • Gatling Good: The gun form of her God Arc.
  • Heroic BSoD: She has a massive one after she realizes that her actions under the influence of brainwashing (supposedly) led Lindow to his death.
  • Lethal Chef: The manga adaptation portrays her as one. It's hinted at in 2 as well.
  • Manchurian Agent: She's been brainwashed by Johannes and his cronies before she joins the Far East Branch to turn into their personal executioner after feeding her a few code words. The first major use of this is when they try to make her assassinate Lindow on a mission and then later turn on Sakuya when she discovers the truth about Aegis.
  • Morph Weapon: Like all New-Type God Eaters, her God Arc can shift between BFS and BFG modes.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Promoted to the position as of The 2nd Break manga set 3 years after the first game. Most notably her new coat zips down instead of up, but her breasts are too big to let the zipper pass, resulting in even more blatant underboob. A small crowd of admirers express their "relief" at the sight after worrying that her new uniform would actually cover her up.
  • Nice Girl: After her character development. On rare occasions, Alisa revert back to her former self, especially when Kota does something stupid.
  • Nice Hat: She initially lacks one in The 2nd Break but is given a new one by Yuu. In 2, she switches to a smaller beret.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Wears sheer tights along with her skirt, though it's not so obvious because of her thigh high boots. Loses the tights by the time of God Eater 2.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Takes both roles.
    • She's the Blue to Kota's Red, as she's sensible and tactical while he's impulsive and reckless.
    • On the other hand, she's the Red to the Protagonist's Blue, as she's incredibly emotional and the protag is her Living Emotional Crutch. This is even reflected in-game: she has her own personal God Arc set of gun, blade and shield, all of which are red and specialize in Fire. Midway through the game, she gives you a blue version of the shield as a thank you present, and you can get blue versions of the gun and blade as well, all of which specialize in Ice.
  • Ship Tease: With the protagonist. Being a Silent Protagonist, this can go normally or not.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: In the media-based universe, Alisa is in love with the kind and gentle Yuu Kannagi. Which is the canon name for the Protagonist of the first game and its remakes.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Her surname in Russian is, properly, Омела ("Mistletoe", for the curious). The typically-accepted anglicization of this word is Omela, but the games consistently transliterate it as Amiella instead. (This is largely due to how the Japanese transliterates her name - Japanese traditionally tries to match a word's phonetics when transliterating to kana, and アミエーラ is the closest to the sounds of Омела. "Amiella" is the clearest anglicization of アミエーラ, and the early translators might not have gotten the memo about her name actually being an extant Russian word, so Amiella stuck.)
  • Underboobs: Not as noticeable as most. In the anime however...
  • Vapor Wear: She doesn't appear to be wearing a bra under that revealing "shirt".
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: Her DLC Burst costume is just red bikini with goggles.
  • You Remind Me of X: She is reminded of the Protagonist of the first game, when she first meets the Protagonist of God Eater 2.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Grade A. With her boots, anyway. More prominent in her new uniform in God Eater 2.

A humanoid Aragami with a Bias Factor which makes her averse to devouring humans. She was discovered by Dr. Sakaki and was since taken under his wing. She possesses the Singularity, a Core that is the key to causing the Devouring Apocalypse, and is therefore a target of Johannes. He eventually got his hands on her and embedded her core into Nova, beginning the Devouring Apocalypse. After Johannes's defeat, she thanks everyone for what they've done for her and asks Soma to devour her body so she may carry Nova away to save everyone.

  • Anti Anti Christ: As a Singularity she is destined to be a vital part of triggering the Devouring Apocalypse, but after her experiences with Fenrir she develops empathy and in the ending of the original game, just as the Devouring Apocalypse is about to trigger, she takes the Nova to the moon so that humanity will be spared.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Shio is the key to triggering the Devouring Apocalypse, which would spell doom for everyone on Earth if taken advantage of. Thankfully Shio's experiences with her human friends keeps her from letting that happen.
  • Badass Adorable: Cute, friendly and just as capable of kicking ass against the Aragami alonside her God Eater friends.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the Burst storyline, it is revealed that she saved Lindow by intervening in his fight with a Dyaus Pita and "telling" it to leave them. She then tended to his Red Right Hand and chained it lest it may overtake him. While this couldn't keep the transformation at bay forever, without her intervention there would likely have never been the chance for the protagonist to bring Lindow back from the brink.
  • Big Eater: Well, she is an Aragami; this is inevitable. Dr. Sakaki gathered a large number of cores in preparation for taking her in, and she chewed through the lot in a fraction of the time he expected.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: The God Arc she wields in battle is generated for her own arm and is a part of her.
  • The Cameo: She briefly made and appearance in final episode of anime dropping canned goods at still alive Lindow's feet.
  • Catchphrase: "I'm ready to eat!"
  • Cheerful Child: Very inquisitive and friendly.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Given that she wasn't raised by humans, Shio's a bit...odd when you first find her. She starts to become more coherent after spending some time with Fenrir, but her cuckooness is still present.
  • Cute Monster Girl: She looks just like a cute little human girl except for her golden eyes and chalk-white skin.
  • Hunter of His Own Kind: The Aragamis are her food.
  • Extreme Omnivore: As an Aragami she'll eat most anything. Thankfully, her Bias is such that she won't devour humans.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Asks Soma to devour her body so she can lift Nova away to the Moon and save everyone.
  • Not Quite Dead: She's last seen prancing about on the terraformed Moon, gazing upon Earth.
  • Shout-Out: Upon receiving an Aragami Bullet from a teammate, she will sometimes shout, "THE STRONGEST!" Possibly in reference to a certain pink-clad martial artist.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Her name is Shio in both English and Japanese versions, but her codename in the Japanese version is "Chiot", Gratuitous French for "puppy".
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?

One of the three Burst exclusive characters and a New-Type God Eater, together with Annette and Federico. His introduction claim he was assigned to the Medical Unit. He turns out to be a personification of Lindow's God Arc after Lindow was transformed into the Corrosive Hannibal.

  • By the Eyes of the Blind: Ren can only be seen and heard by the protagonist and Lindow, as no one else is shown to ever take notice of his/her presence. This also carries over into combat — your allies will not heal or revive Ren, since they aren't aware of him.
  • Combat Medic: A good substitute for Sakuya. He has anti-aggro skills and, as a New-Type, can also enter Burst mode by devouring, as well as boost the protagonist with Aragami bullets.
  • Friendly Sniper: Ren focuses a lot on his Gun and rarely uses his Blade.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Saves Lindow from Corrosive Hannibal by taking a hit for him.
  • Living Weapon: He is the personification of Lindow's God arc.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Just like Shio. And fittingly so, since he too is, at least in a sense, a human-form Aragami.

A God Eater introduced during your first mission with Soma. Haughty and insufferable, but nevertheless has a soft spot for his younger sister Erina. Unfortunately, he was killed very early on by an Ogretail, which established Soma's reputation as a doom magnet for any potential teammate.

  • Adaptation Expansion: He is a supporting character in Days of Ruins light novel, it's also shown how badass actually he is.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Surprisingly in anime, Eric is rather friendly, honorable and willingly to risk his own life to save the others. He is also more badass here than in his game appearance.
  • All Just a Dream: In Resurrection, the bonus vignettes with and by extension, the entire presence of Masked Ogre was stated to be a dream. Seeing how he's really Eric...
  • Anime Hair
  • Ascended Extra: Eric was a minor character killed early on in the original storyline. In Burst, Eric finally earn his rights to join in your team.
  • Catchphrase: "Magnificent!" The usage of his catch phrase becomes less in Resurrection.
  • Charlie Brown from Outta Town: Tries to pretend he is someone else, but Masked Ogre can't help but slip into his true self, as in "Magnificent!" sometimes. The Protagonist doesn't even buy it and recognizes him right away.
  • Cool Shades
  • Fingerless Gloves
  • Friendly Fire Index: Eric isn't that much unlike the killing machine, Kanon Daiba.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In the anime, Eric sacrificed himself protecting the unconscious Lenka and he was devoured by a surviving Ogretail. His corpse was last seen where everyone in Fenrir Far East Branch attended his funeral.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's loud mouthed, prideful and haughty. And he loves his little sister Erina more than anything else.
  • Killed Off for Real: As early as your first mission with Soma.
  • The Lancer: To Soma in the Days of Ruins light novel.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Eric didn’t do a very good job in changing his name and wearing an Ogretail Mask, and the Protagonist still recognizes him.
  • Promoted to Playable: After you clear the last Challenge Mission, "Watch Out Overhead".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: You can barely see his red eyes due to his sunglasses.
  • Roaring Rampageof Revenge: Has the Wrath of Revenge Skill, which automatically results in him going into Burst Mode when an ally goes down.
  • Running Gag: With Ogretails.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Sensitive Guy to Soma's Manly Man.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He only wears a vest.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Gets eaten immediately upon meeting.

Defense Squad

  • You Don't Look Like You: In the original God Eater game, they have a generic appearance. The Burst expansion eventually gives them unique appearance.

A member of the 2nd Unit and team Captain of the Defense Squad. When not in duty, he's frequently seen hitting on Hibari at her counter. Tatsumi is also a protagonist of his own prequel manga, God Eater ~side by side~.

  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: His combat style involves plunging directly into enemies to cause a distraction.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: RGB, wears Red.
  • BFS: Weapon of Choice
  • Hero of Another Story: In God Eater ~side by side~.
  • Hopeless Suitor: To Hibari.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Brendan's Blue.
  • The Leader: Of the 2nd Unit.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Admits that he has low compatibility with his God Arc during Rage Burst, and even initially had trouble dealing with Ogretails. He greatly improved overtime however, and it shows when, after the Defense Unit Character Episodes where the other Defense Unit members sans Kanon are promoted to Captain, Sakaki promotes him to Commander of the Far East Branch's entire defense force.

A medic from the 2nd Unit, notorious for her friendly-fire mishaps.

  • Ascended Extra: Sort of. She is the only member of the 2nd Unit to make a return in 2 (until the rest of the Defense Unit members come back in Rage Burst) albeit as the only other member of the 4th Unit together with Haruomi. She also have her own Character Episode.
  • BFG: Weapon of Choice
  • Combat Medic: Her position in Burst,
  • Chromatic Arrangement: RGB, she wears green.
  • Cute and Psycho: Is implied to be this in Burst, and is flat-out one in God Eater 2. Her battle quotes range from Shrinking Violet to Blood Knight.
Mission Start: "Um... Let's do our best."
Enemy Destroyed: "Your death cry was lovely!"
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She's notorious for her "friendly fire" incidents, but she's just so god damn adorable to hate for it.
  • Fingerless Gloves: Only her left hand.
  • Friendly Fire Index: And she's notorious for it with her preference for Radial Bullets, which tend to blow allies away. In the sequel, Licca originally refuses to give Oracle Reserve upgrade on her Blast Gun until she is convinced by the 2!protagonist.
  • Hidden Buxom: Quite busty, when shown in a bikini in official art. More Obvious in the sequel, as she is older. That, and Haru puts her in the "Classic" outfit set in one of his Character Episodes, which is basically a Sexy Secretary outfit with a Cleavage Window and Grade A Zettai Ryouiki.
  • Limited Wardrobe: She still wears the same green dress in the sequel, but this time as an actual dress rather than just top.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly Girl to Gina's Tomboy.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Her new hairstyle in God Eater 2.
  • Punny Name: In Japanese, "Kanon Daiba" is a homophone of "Cannon Diver". She literally dives in with a cannon.
  • Running Gag: She is infamous of friendly firing both in and out universe, which remained unremedied in the sequel. Resonant Ops remedied it a little when she is upgrade into a New-Type God Eater which enable her to fight as a Blader.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Doubles with Dub Name Change as her code name is spelled as "Canon" (as in the camera brand) in Japan, while renamed as "Kanon" in western releases.
  • Split Personality: Safe to assume so, as this readily becomes apparent in God Eater 2. Outside combat, she is all sweet. In combat, however, 'complete psycho' is perhaps the best way to describe her. This is absent in Burst, but it was later brought back in the English versions of Resurrection and Rage Burst. She remained this way in Resonant Ops.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Grade A, thanks to her new outfit in God Eater 2.

  • BFS: Weapon of Choice
  • Combat Pragmatist: He likes to poison enemies with his tainted Long Blade.
  • Glory Hound: Him and Karel, if together on missions, tend to argue over who's gonna kill more Aragami. This is most apparent when they're introduced in the sequel.
  • Fiery Redhead: A male example.
  • I Work Alone: Tries to invoke this, but given this is a team game he fails in the attempt.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Likes to charge enemies on his own when The Leader is not with him. Doubles with Suicidal Overconfidence as his profile states that he lacks the skills necessary to handle such antics.
  • Roaring Rampageof Revenge: Has the Wrath of Revenge Skill, which automatically results in him going into Burst Mode when an ally goes down.
  • Standard Status Effects: His combat style involves sneaking up to foes and poisoning them. Having the Hidden Attack skill certainly helps.
  • Suicidal Overconfidence
  • Tsundere: A male example, in which he can't express enough gratitude to the Protagonist whenever s/he covers him in another high-risk mission he took without thinking twice.

  • Combat Pragmatist: He likes to poison enemies with Venom Shot.

  • Gatling Good
  • Glory Seeker
  • Hidden Depths: His character episode in the sequel reveals that he owns a hospital in the rural areas. Not for money mind you, but because second-class citizens like them would never get the medical treatment they need otherwise.
  • Only in It for the Money: Almost every conversation with him is about money and he makes it very clear that his only motivation to go out there and kick some Aragami ass is the reward. Given his Character Episode, he may be using this funding to keep the hospital he owns going.
  • Punch-Clock Hero: Admits to this effect more than any other character.

Lindow's older sister and herself a retired gunner God Eater. She was relieved from her position in 2069, and now serves as adviser to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd units and all New-Type God Eaters.

  • Absolute Cleavage: Her outfit leaves little to the imagination.
  • Beauty Mark: Has one of the left side of her mouth.
  • Brother-Sister Team: Back when she was still active as God Eater with Lindow.
  • Downloadable Content: Tsubaki is a pre-order DLC NPC exclusive for the Japanese version of God Eater Burst. Her appearance is based on God Eater Prologue OVA.
  • Friendly Sniper: She used to be one.
  • Mission Control: She can be selected as an operator after clearing the original story.
  • Passing the Torch: Her God Arc to Kota.
  • Peek-a-Bangs: To her right eye, while Lindow is for his left eye.
  • Not So Stoic: Though she usually acts cool and hides her emotions, she is shown striking the wall in frustration upon hearing that Lindow went MIA, and even mourning in private in an elevator over his fate.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She may be a bit curt but Tsubaki cares deeply for those under her command and knows how to lead them. Most notable in the Burst storyline where when it's first learned that Lindow might be alive. Tsubaki waits until they are absolutely 100% sure that he might be out there before breaking the news to the 1st unit and organizing a search party.
  • Retired Badass: She used to be a God Eater, but has since retired to run Mission Control.
  • Vapor Wear: Pay close attention to her shirt and the sides of her pants. To think she's a commanding officer, too.
  • The Voice: Returned as a mission operator in the sequel.

Voiced by: Takeshi Mori [Burst], Takahiro Fujimoto [Resurrection] (Japanese) and Keith Silverstein (English)
Age: 62
God Arc: 1st Generation
Weapon Type: Pistol Gun

A veteran and the last of the very first God Eaters, now retired, but nevertheless remains a fixture in Fenrir, giving trusted advice to newer generations of God Eaters.

  • Action Survivor: He's from the first generation of God Eaters. Given the rough history with using Oracle Cells as weapons on humans, it's quite amazing he's still alive with few visible side effects.
  • Coat Cape: Wears one over his shoulder.
  • Cool Old Guy: He freely gives useful advice to the younger generation of God Eaters to help them survive in the field.
  • Hunk: For an old guy, Gen still have the looks and a nice voice (at least in English dub for Resurrection).
  • Mentor Archetype: To the newly recruited God Eaters.
  • Passing the Torch: Prior to God Eater 2, Gen is no longer in active service for Fenrir and he is now living in the outer ghetto. Damian take his place as a new mentor for the new generations of God Eaters.
  • Retired Badass: He used a pistol God Arc, perhaps the opposite of Super Prototype, and has lived into his sixties. Imagine what he would've been like with a real God Arc.

  • Big Good: Eventually becomes this in the original story when in the climax he actively works with the heroes in preventing Johannes from getting Shio and triggering the Devouring Apocalypse.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Despite his oddities, he's the world's leading researcher on Aragami and the Bias Factor.
  • The Chessmaster: Has a constant game going with Johannes over their ideas over what to do about the impending Singularity.
  • Cloudcuckoolander
  • Eye Glasses: Several pairs, with unused ones hanging on chains around his neck.
  • Field Promotion: After Johannes's death, he was promoted as his temporary replacement as head of Fenrir Far East Branch. As of 2, he is still in this position.
  • Mad Scientist: He's not insane, exactly, nor is he evil, but he is definitely not normal.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: His Character Tic consists of him leaning his head dangerously close to anyone he speaks to, making the other person lean back in return.
  • Older Than They Look: Similarly to Johannes, despite being 50 years old he looks in his thirties at most.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses
  • Spell My Name with an "S": In the Japanese version, his first name is "Parer" (pronounced "Peira"). This was changed to Paylor for the English version, as well as the Japanese versions of Resurrection and Rage Burst.

    Director Schicksal (SPOILERS

Johannes von Schicksal

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/schicksal.jpg
Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama (Japanese) and Crispin Freeman [Burst], Patrick Seitz [Resurrection and Anime] (English)
Age: 45

One of the founders of Fenrir, a former researcher and current director of its Far East Branch. He is in charge of the Aegis project, but is secretly advancing his own "Ark Project" designed to to save up to 1,000 handpicked individuals plus their families up to the second degree while causing the Devouring Apocalypse. He had Lindow killed because he was investigating the plan. Johannes is also Soma's father.

  • Big Bad: The main antagonist of the original God Eater storyline.
  • Bishōnen
  • The Chessmaster: Almost every slightly innocuous thing he does is toward a larger goal. Has a constant game going with Dr. Sakaki.
  • Meaningful Name: Shicksal is german for Destiny, Johaness is etymologically related to "john" and means "god is gracious."
  • No Place for Me There: He never intended to leave on the Ark, saying he, who sacrificed so many, had no right to see the New World.
  • Older Than They Look: Despite being 45 he looks in his thirties at most.
  • One-Winged Angel: Becomes the male half of Arda Nova to confront the party.
  • Villain Has a Point: The Ark Project might be terrible for the majority of humanity and condemn them to death but as Sakaki points out, it does make sense: Aragami can never be permanently destroyed and sooner or later Singularities will naturally occur, so it might be better if one takes the apocalypse of their own terms. However since those condemned would naturally include anyone who even dissent in the slightest to this plan or proves to not be "useful" or "important" enough, the main characters don't agree with this plan.
  • The Von Trope Family: Of the darker von variant. It's probably just there to emphasize his Meaningful Name.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Although the Ark Project would doom all humanity save a thousand humans chosen to escape into space, he is resigned to the fact that it may be mankind's only chance at survival against the Aragami. He also never planned to join the escape, knowing his plan would doom the rest of humanity.
