Protagonists

    Ayato Katsuragi
The protagonist. His father was a legendary Devil Buster.
  • Heroic Mime: Downplayed. He does speak outside of Dialogue Trees on some occasions, and some of the game's narration is presented as his Internal Monologue, but he still speaks less than any other major character.
  • Magic Knight: Learns both physical and magical skills as he levels up
  • Tragic Keepsake: Wears the blouson from his father's old Devil Buster uniform

    Yuuka Tachibana
The daughter of one of Hatsudai Shelter's administrators, and Ayato's Love Interest.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: After Murmur wipes the floor with Ayato and his friends, he summons his demonic allies, who proceed to tear off pieces of her and eat them.
  • Dismantled MacGuffin: A somewhat morbid example. Ayato's goal for most of the story is to retrieve parts of her from the demons that ate them.
  • Uptown Girl: Is ranked higher than Ayato in the shelters' caste system.

    Rui Asuka
A mysterious girl that Ayato meets in the Yoyogi labor camp.

Devil Busters

    Tatsuya Hayasaka
One of Ayato's friends, and a Devil Buster specializing in close-quarters combat.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: He has one in his sprite, but doesn't seem to actually use it — he starts with a Combat Knife like almost everyone else.
  • Bus Crash: Isn't seen again after Ayato gets captured. In Akihabara, Emi recognizes personal items of his in a merchant's inventory, and it's revealed that he was burned to death at some point before that.

    Emi Kirishima
Hayasaka's fiancee, who serves as the Devil Busters' mechanic.
  • Damsel in Distress: Some time after Ayato escapes from the Yoyogi labor camp, she's found restrained against a wall in Sunshine City. He rescues her defeating Abaddon and retrieving Yuuka's arm.
  • Wrench Wench: Essentially the 2nd Squad's main engineer, and was responsible for building Newton. Fittingly, her starting melee weapon when she joins the party is a Buzz Wrench.

    Yoshio Nishino
The commanding officer of the Hatsudai Shelter Devil Busters' 2nd Squad.
  • Bus Crash: Isn't seen again after he starts wandering across Tokyo. Sanshirou reveals that he was killed by Astarte while they were travelling together.

    Isamu Yamase
A firearm specialist, and one of the most senior members of Nishino's squad.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: When you reunite with him after escaping from Hatsudai Shelter, he reveals that he sold out the survivors in the farm to save his own skin, and is now working for the demons.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Is noted to be fairly proficient with COMPs.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: He joins Ayato's party for a brief period during the Hatsudai Shelter invasion, before being sent to guard the farm.
  • The Unfought: While he antagonizes Ayato on multiple occasions, he's never fought directly

    Newton
A robotic dog that serves as Emi's canine companion.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Like fully organic dogs, Newton can detect demons. He uses this ability to see through Dantalian's human disguise during the first encounter.
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: Knows Fire Breath as a party member.

Pentagramma

    Tetsuya Sonoda

  • Blow You Away: Starts off with a number of Force spells when he joins Ayato's party.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Dies offscreen under mysterious circumstances during Ayato's duel with Adonis.

    Kouki Kamikawa

    Nobuhiro Watanabe
The leader of Pentagramma.
  • Kill and Replace: It's eventually revealed that his odd behavior following the Bael cult's attempt to retake the Metropolitan Government Office was the result of Baal Haddad pulling this on him..

Other Characters

    Sanshirou Souma
A friendly one-armed man wandering around Tokyo.
  • Handicapped Badass: He's missing an arm, but that doesn't stop him from fighting alongside Ayato.

Demons

    Murmur

  • Final Boss Preview: In the final battle with him in front of Baal's throne room, his stats and skills are the same as the second fight with him in Hatsudai Shelter. The only difference is that you're strong enough to not immediately get mulched.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: The first two fights against him. In the first one, he shrugs off your attacks for a brief period before leaving, and in the second one, he simply wipes the floor with you.

    Dantalian
A warlock-esque demon who runs a labor camp in Shinjuku.

    Adonis

    Baal

  • Final Boss: Will always be the last boss you fight, regardless of route.
