The Main Protagonists

    Royd Clive

Royd Clive

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/royd_clive.jpg
Royd was an OCU commander and the main protagonist for the OCU scenario. His fiancee, Karen Meure, had become part of his unit in the early events of the story. During a mission to investigate an USN (aka UCS) munition plant in Larcus, Huffman Island, Karen rushed ahead in her spying, only to be met by an ambush and was apparently killed by an USN unit. The ensuing fight (OCU Mission 1) also apparently destroyed the treaty between the OCU and the USN, resulting in the Second Huffman Conflict. Ever since then, Royd had been mentally unstable and moody, a cross between being an unforgiving blood-avenger (toward Karen's killer) and hard on himself for supposedly destroying the treaty between the great powers.

After being discharged from the army, he at first had no intent to return. One year later, an OCU colonel named Olson managed to recruit him using the promise of avenging Karen. Royd then became the commander of the OCU mercenary unit, "Canyon Crows".

  • The Ace: He's specifically chosen to lead the Canyon Crows because he's a superb commander and fighter. Under his command, Canyon Crows did indeed end up playing a major role in OCU's successful counter attack. On the gameplay side of things, he's the only pilot in the OCU scenario to be good at every job class.
  • Animal Motifs: Crow. He once went by the callsign "Crow", and for most of 1st, he led a squad whose emblem was a crow. Oddly, his wanzer was nicknamed Shrike instead.
  • Antihero: Royd played a major role in stopping a terrible war that ravaged the Huffman Island, though he was mainly motivated by something far less selfless - the desire to avenge his fiancee. Later lost the "anti" part as he grew to be motivated by genuine concern for justice. And then lost the "hero" part when he turned into a civilian-killing terrorist in his quest to bring down the great powers.
  • Awesome Aussie: An Anglo-Australian who's an exceptionally good military commander and soldier.
  • Bash Brothers: With Ryuji. Ryuji had known Royd before the Second Huffman Conflict, and on the gameplay side of things, Ryuji was the only playable character who's always available for Royd during the entirety of the game, i.e., Natalie, Keith and J.J. were briefly unavailable between Mission 22 to 24.
    • Later, Royd seemed to have become this with Gentz Weizer by the time of the epilogue, as the two fully joined force to fight for Huffman Island nationalism.
  • Broken Bird: He watched his lover killed, suffered from intense guilt due to the false belief that he accidentally started a terrible war, was given the hope that his lover wasn't dead only to learn that she had been turned into B-Type Device, got falsely labeled as a terrorist by the great powers, so on and so forth. It actually had pretty bad impacts on his sanity. See Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds below.
  • Broken Hero: In the ending of his original story, he gave off hints that he wasn't very right in the head. The other media showed that he had been a real headcase since he was discharged from the army after the Larcus Incident. Not only did he have PTSD, but he also suffered from outbursts of rage, alcohol and drug abuse, and was at a point suicidal. Though he did put on a happy face after what occurred in Longrivers Island, his sanity didn't last as Morgan Bernard played into his grievance. By the time Rocky Armitage met him during the Alordesh coup, he was little more than a globalist-hating mass murderer, so Rocky had to kill him.
  • Byronic Hero: Impulsive, regularly inclined to defy orders, and severely distressed by guilt over a wrong he had committed in the past.
  • The Captain: His official rank.
  • Catchphrase: His response to the request to join the Canyon Crows was always "Do what you want."
  • Determinator: Even Olson's threat to shoot him immediately didn't deter Royd from investigating Nirvana Institute in order to find out the truth about Karen's fate (buildup to OCU Mission 23).
  • The Dragon: Eventually became this to the Grimnir after the events of 1st. He died at the hands of Rocky Armitage during the Second Alordesh Coup D'etat (2).
  • Establishing Character Moment: The following exchange between Royd and Ryuji in the very first mission firmly established that Royd was not a generic goody-two-shoe main protagonist note :
(Karen was ahead, spying on the factory.)
Ryuji: Just as I thought. You're worried about your fiancee.
Royd: Open your useless mouth again during an operations and you'll be shot.
  • Foil: To Kevin in a lot of ways. Both of them were very talented young men involved in the Second Huffman Conflict. Both of them were in love with women who were later revealed to have been mistreated by the great powers, i.e., Karen being turned into a B-Type Device and Maria having her life destroyed by USN-friendly forces when she was young. Royd, however, found out the truth of Karen's fate via the help of the Spirit of Huffman, who were fighting the great powers, while Kevin was helped by Patricia Stanley, who's an agent of the USN. Due to this and other differences (e.g., Royd being a less functional person to start with), the two eventually went down vastly different paths - Royd ended up developing an intense hatred towards the great powers and turned into a mass-murdering terrorist, while Kevin, still having hope about globalism, decided to join USN peacekeeping forces, to help protect children from suffering the same fate as Maria.
  • Freudian Trio: Being primarily motivated by revenge for most of 1st, Royd was arguably the Id to Ryuji's more realistic Ego and Natalie's "always-follow-the-rules" Superego.
  • Home Sweet Home: Royd and Karen were planning to settle down and start a family on the Huffman Island (which Karen had fallen in love with). Too bad the plan was stopped short by the war.
  • Hot-Blooded: He had some real impulse control issues. Examples included when he almost went off and shot Driscoll during their cooperative fight against Spirit of Huffman forces (Mission 20). Luckily, Ryuji and Natalie would be there to keep him in check.
  • I'll Kill You!: Said this to Gentz Weizer after the Crows routed the Spirit of Huffman at the latter's HQ (OCU Mission 22): Royd decided to spare Gentz, who told the Crows about the BD Project. The Crows weren't fully convinced, so Gentz pointed them to Nirvana Institute's factory, where evidence awaited. Royd decided to go investigate, but threatened to hunt down and kill Gentz if Gentz turned out to be lying. Gentz wasn't lying.
  • It's All My Fault: He blamed himself for messing up during the Larcus Incident and thus starting the Second Huffman Conflict. This got worse as he witnessed the terrible tragedies that had happened during the war, even showing signs of depression and suicidality. He got better in this regards after his second encounter with Driscoll in Larcus (Mission 24), where he learnt that the Larcus Incident was just a pretext by the great powers, an excuse for starting the war - which meant the war would have started regardless of his action.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: Royd almost went off the handle and tried to kill Driscoll when they briefly teamed up against Spirit of Huffman forces (Mission 20).
  • Killed Off for Real: When Rocky Armitage blew up his wanzer during the secret mission in 2.
  • Land Mine Goes "Click!": Seemed to have developed a love for landmines long before the event of 2, as he was stated to have killed a lot of people with his landmines, and the secret mission in which the Dull Stags fought him was set on a battlefield full of landmines.
  • The Leader: To the unit that consisted of him, Ryuji, and Karen. Then later to the Canyon Crows.
  • Light Is Good: His wanzer was by default light grey in color, and official artworks tended to show him wearing light-colored clothings. Though he eventually turned into a villain.
  • Living Legend: Royd seemed to have become this as he started fighting for Huffman Island nationalism (in the epilogue of 1st), seeing that he was spoken of as "the Hero of Huffman" during the events of 2, which took place about 10 years after 1st.
  • Master of All: He's by far the most well-rounded of the playable characters in the Canyon Crows, being very effective whether as a Striker, Assault, or a Missileer. Although somewhat oddly, he's usually depicted as an Assault-class pilot whenever he appeared outside 1st, including when he appeared in the secret mission in 2 and in 5's arena.
  • Military Maverick: He defied what Olson (his superior) wanted of him at multiple points. For the first couple of times, Royd was lucky that Natalie was in the unit (i.e., General Blakewood saved his ass). The time when he defied Olson and discovered the BD Project, it paid off big time, however.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Ryuji's and Natalie's Blue. Royd could be quite impulsive, which often resulted in Ryuji calling him out.
  • Revenge Before Reason: In OCU Mission 20, Royd tried to engage Driscoll against order, i.e., as the two were supposed to fight together against the Spirits of Huffman. He was stopped by Natalie (if she's deployed) or Olson (if Natalie was not deployed).
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: For most of 1st, he's motivated by the desire to avenge Karen, especially during Mission 24, where Driscoll revealed he had turned Karen into a B-Type Device. It got worse after the events of 1st, as he eventually turned into a mass-murdering terrorist.
  • The Scapegoat: He was blamed for the Larcus Incident and thus starting the Second Huffman Conflict. But it wasn't actually his fault, as mentioned in It's All My Fault above.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Increasingly showed signs of being this after the Second Huffman Conflict, seeing what he eventually turned into (See Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds below).
  • Spell My Name With An S: His first name is sometimes known as Lloyd.
  • True Companions: Eventually became this with the entire Canyon Crows, to the point all of them (except for Molly and Frederick) came back to join Royd in his fight against the great powers (Epilogue).
  • Undying Loyalty: His heart belonged only to Karen, much to Natalie's dismay.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: By the time of 2, he was willing to kill civilians in order to fight the great powers, even though he began with an understandable rejection of the globalist ideal.
  • Western Terrorists: Firmly this by the time of the epilogue of his story, where he joined up with the Grimnir.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: By the time of the events of 2, Royd had, out of hatred towards the OCU, turned into a mass-murderer who had killed civilians in his attempt to fight the great powers, which ended in him being killed by the Dull Stags. Yes, he had turned into a horrible villain by then, but looking at what he's been through (see Broken Bird above), you'd probably still feel kind of sorry for him.

    Kevin Greenfield

Kevin Greenfield

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kevin_36.jpg
Kevin was born in USN North America to a military family, as his father was a former Lieutenant Colonel in the USN Army. Kevin enlisted at the age of 18 and graduated from a top military academy before applying to join the Black Hounds, an elite USN special forces unit. Based partly on his own achievements and partly on his father's reputation, Kevin was accepted as Black Hounds B-team platoon leader. Soon after passing the qualification test, Kevin met and quickly fell in love with fellow Black Hounds member Maria Paredes.

After an incident during a mission caused the unit to fail to capture the leader of the "Star of Freedom" terrorist group, Kevin and his squad mates, Johnny Sanders and Matthew Lorenzo, lost their positions in the Black Hounds. Kevin was nearly court-martialed, but due to the rising tensions between the USN and OCU during the lead up to the Second Huffman Conflict, he was sent to the Nirvana Institute under the command of Driscoll. A mutual dislike soon developed between the two due to their opposing personalities, but they begrudgingly worked together for a time.

However, Kevin would only be with Nirvana for a short time, as mobilization for the Second Huffman Conflict began soon after his arrival on Huffman Island. The outbreak of the war led Kevin to leave Nirvana after he and his squad mates were reassigned to USN Colonel Stewart's command, specifically the 112th Special Armored Infantry unit, Silver Lynxes.

  • The Ace: Kevin was a very capable military commander and wanzer pilot. Under his leadership, the Silver Lynxes ended up playing a major role in the USN's successful capture of Freedom City. On the gameplay side of things, he's the Silver Lynxes' Master of All.
  • Animal Motifs: Lynx. It's what his wanzer was named after and the emblem of the team Kevin led for most of the duration of 1st's USN scenario.
  • Bash Brothers: With Johnny. Johnny was very eager to rejoin Kevin on Huffman Island, while Matthew was sort-of dragged along (Mission 3). Johnny was also the most willing to follow Kevin on his quest to expose the BD Project.
  • Benevolent Boss:
    • To his subordinates. It's precisely his benevolence as a superior that caused Johnny and Matthew to willingly follow him to the Huffman Island and later the rest of the Silver Lynxes to come along to help when he embarked on his quest to expose the BD Project.
    • Taken up to eleven in USN Mission 18, in which Kevin, realizing that his plan to expose the BD Project had failed, decided to pretend to shoot Johnny and tell everyone that his subordinates were just forced to follow his commands, so that he would take the fall while the rest of his team got free. It's implied that by taking blame for all of the charges, Kevin was putting himself into some really deep troubles.
Darril: This new squad leader of ours... He's not like any officer I've seen so far.
Renges: Yeah. I don't know about you, but I think I like him already.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: His wanzer was by default black in color, and official artworks tended to show him wearing dark-colored clothings. He's, nonetheless, one of the most benevolent characters in 1st.
  • Determinator: Best shown when he pursued Winger all the way to the Santa Barbara.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Was a commando with the Black Hounds.
  • Foil: To Royd in a lot of ways. Due to this and other differences (e.g., Royd being a less less functional person to start with), the two eventually went down vastly different paths - Royd ended up developing an intense hatred towards the great powers and turned into a mass-murdering terrorist, while Kevin, still having hope about globalism, decided to join USN peacekeeping forces, to help protect children from suffering the same fate as Maria.
  • Freudian Trio: The Superego who always wanted to adhere to his principles, in contrast to Johnny's more realistic Ego and Matthew's laid-back Id.
  • Great Escape: Broke Johnny, Matthew, and Howard out of Soleit Prison Camp after Patricia got him out of jail (Mission 19).
  • The Heart: To Maria Paredes. Kevin was the person who gave her the bravery to stand up to Driscoll, who had tormented Maria for years by forcing her to participate in his shady businesses.
  • The Leader: To the Blood Hound's Bravo Team. Later to the Silver Lynxes.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Kevin was a very talented military commander and tactician. Based on his backstory, he was likely to have inherited this from his father.
  • Master of All: Much like Royd, Kevin was viable whether as a Striker, Assault, or Missileer.
  • Military Maverick: Kevin was normally a very obedient soldier, but after Laurent's death (Mission 17) and the subsequent series of events that caused him to learn about the BD Project, Kevin defied his superior's orders and did what his conscience told him to do - to attempt to expose the BD Project. It eventually paid off as he managed to get Winger arrested.
  • Nice Guy: He always tried to do the right thing. In USN Mission 3, while Driscoll urged Kevin to destroy their contact's vehicle so that Kevin could escape more easily, Kevin insisted on protecting the said contact.
Kevin (To the peacekeeping troops he led): Remember, people, this is a peacekeeping mission in USN territory. Our job is to defend all USN citizens, including those living in satellite nations. Think before you point your gun barrel at someone, and what pulling that trigger would mean to them and their family.
  • Nice Guys Finish Last: Zigzagged.
    • It's known that Kevin was a very capable military commander and wanzer pilot, but he regularly got into troubles with his superiors due to his inability to be cold-hearted when making decisions. In fact, in USN Mission 2, his refusal to give the clearance to fire at the Star of Freedom's base (because Maria's team was still inside) resulted in the terrorist group's leader having ample time to run away. This caused Kevin to get the demotion that would later bring him to the Huffman Island. Similar things happened multiple times during the story and was apparently the main reason why Kevin had difficulties getting promoted despite his talent. However...
    • ... Kevin's Nice Guy tendency paid off big time in the second half of the game when the Silver Lynxes voluntarily followed him on his journey to expose the BD Project.
  • Pursue the Dream Job: Downplayed, but by the time of the epilogue, Kevin had decided to join USN peace-keeping forces to help protect South American children from suffering the same fate that Maria had when she was young. This was probably closer to his true calling than any job he had previously had.
  • Reassigned to Antarctica: After the Star of Freedom HQ disaster (Mission 2), an unnamed USN general said Kevin should be reassigned to Alaska "to push up papers until he was dead" as the punishment for blowing a critical mission. Fortunately for Kevin, he was sent to Huffman Island instead, at the request of the Special Weapons Research Division known as the "Nirvana Institute". Upon arrival, however, Driscoll threatened him with reassignment to Alaska if he didn't follow through on his orders without question.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: At times played the Red to Johnny's Blue. The most notable example was when USN lost Freedom City - Kevin insisted that he wanted to go check on Maria (who was also fighting), while Johnny urged Kevin to make the right decisions of retreating and ended up pulling him away (Mission 14).
  • The Scapegoat: During the mission to destroy the Star of Freedom HQ in the Andes Mountains (Mission 2), Maria got hung up for some reason during her infiltration of the base interior. This delay proved to be very costly as it allowed the resistance leadership to avoid the orbital strike which then spurred the Star of Freedom to continue their efforts against the USN. Although Maria was clearly at fault for the embarrassing failure, Kevin Greenfield took the blame instead, as Maria was too important to be removed from the Black Hounds.
  • True Companions: Was this with Johnny and Matthew. Later became this with the entire Silver Lynxes.

The Oceania Cooperative Union (OCU)

The Canyon Crows

    Ryuji Sakata

Ryuji Sakata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryuji_sakata.jpg
Ryuji was a close associate of Royd Clive, having formed a brother-like bond since their early days working together in the OCU Army. After being discharged, he got likewise found and recruited by Olson. Ryuji served as some sort of information genius and mentor to the Canyon Crows. Ryuji was in truth the younger son of Chairman Reiji Sakata and younger brother of President Koichi Sakata, leaders of the renowned OCU arm manufacturer Sakata Industries. As such, the moral uprightness level of the Sakata family was especially important to him. He wasn't too pleased with the fact that his family business was involved in the BD Project.
  • Bash Brothers: With Royd. Ryuji had known Royd before the Second Huffman Conflict, and on the gameplay side of things, Ryuji was the only playable character who's always available for Royd during the entirety of the game, i.e., Natalie, Keith and J.J. were briefly unavailable between Mission 22 to 24.
  • Bilingual Bonus: His wanzer was nicknamed Raioh, which meant "King of Thunder" in Japanese.
  • Far East Asian Terrorists: By the time of the Epilogue, he, along with the rest of the Crows, joined Royd and Gentz in their fight against globalist powers. They were designated as terrorists by the said powers.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: He ran away from home to become a mercenary, while his older brother Koichi was the president of their family business. Koichi also generally came across as more sophisticated than Ryuji. Later subverted - at least Ryuji would have had the sense not to get their family business involved in the BD Project, which involved abducting soldiers and using the said soldiers' brains as biocomputers.
  • Freudian Trio: The Ego to Royd's Id and Natalie's Superego.
  • The Lancer: To Royd.
  • The Leader: In his backstory, Ryuji was said to have shown promises as a potential future leader for Sakata Industries, though he ran away and let his older brother Koichi be the president instead.
  • More Dakka: One of the strongest Assault-class characters in the game. He outright went for a gatling gun during his appearance in 5's arena.
  • Not So Stoic: Ryuji definitely got very emotional when his older brother Koichi killed their father Reiji for trying to expose the BD Project (buildup to OCU Mission 28).
  • Only Sane Man: One of the more sane members of the Crows, which, you know, was led by a Byronic Hero who reacted to new people joining the team with apathy, for starters.
  • Rebellious Spirit: In his backstory, Ryuji had been groomed to take over the family business since a young age. At some point, however, he seemed to have gained the desire to rebel and ended up joining the OCU Army instead.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Royd's Red. Royd can be quite impulsive, which often resulted in Ryuji calling him out. Examples included Ryuji trying to stop Royd when the latter expressed willingness to let himself be gunned down by Molly (Mission 9).
  • The Runaway: He ran away from his family - the wealthy family behind the Sakata Industries - to join the army before the events of the game.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Downplayed. The events of 1st didn't exactly have positive impacts on Ryuji's sanity, seeing that both his father and brother were killed.
Ryuji: Family...? I'm so tired... So many things have happened... since I left home to join the army. Too many things.

    Natalie F. Blakewood

Natalie F. Blakewood

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/natalie_f_blakewood.jpg
Natalie was Olson's chosen adjutant for the Canyon Crows. She served as an information brain (similar to Ryuji) and the "moral voice" to keep the Crows in line. Natalie was obsessed with duty and with keeping the others following every order, to the point of self-righteous arrogance at times. She was hardly the optimist or about Honor Before Reason as she might seem at first; her obedience tended to boil down to loyalty above anything else. Natalie was the daughter of the OCU Supreme Commanding General Willas E. Blakewood, who saved the Crows' asses on several occasion. Despite initially going along with the BD Project and in fact helping Olson spy on Royd, Natalie eventually overcame her blind obedience and did what her conscience told her to do - to join Royd on his journey to bring down the BD Project.
  • Blind Obedience: Arguably her character flaw. Throughout most of the game, Natalie was the one most eager to make sure the Crows follow orders. At one point, she even became an enemy unit as Olson came to pursue the Canyon Crows (for the latter had learnt too much) and ordered Natalie to attack them. Natalie eventually overcame her flaw by defying the order and instead did what her conscience told her to do (OCU Mission 25).
Natalie (As she's about to attack Olson): I'm a fool.
  • Consummate Liar: She did manage to rather flawlessly pretend to not know anything about the BD Project while helping Olson spy on the Crows.
  • Defector from Decadence: She literally pulled this on Olson mid-battle.
  • Flower Motifs: She gave her wanzer such a girly nickname as Primrose.
  • Freudian Trio: The Superego to Royd's Id and Ryuji's Ego.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She eventually decided to turn against Olson and joined the Crows in their quest to bring down the BD Project, despite initially helping to spy on the Crows.
  • Hopeless Suitor: She flirted with Royd from time to time and showed signs of attraction to him. Too bad for her, Royd's heart belonged only to Karen.
Natalie: The Colonel is serious. Please obey orders this time.
Royd: I just want to learn the truth before I die.
Natalie: No! That's not true! You believe that Karen is alive! You're hoping that she was taken from the hospital in Grey Rock and is living in Nirvana Institute! Why...? How can you keep on loving her so much? I... I...
    Royd: Natalie...
  • Jack of All Trades: Somewhat. Gameplay-wise, she's viable as either an Assault or a Missileer. Her arena appearance in 5 referenced this by having her use an Assault-Launcher hybrid build.
  • The Lancer: Being Olson's chosen adjutant for the Crows, she's presumed to be this to Royd. She in fact acted as a voice of reason at several points, urging Royd and the others to obey orders, as it's the wisest thing to do. Turned out she's The Mole instead.
  • Leitmotif: Natalie's theme, which is a somewhat sad-sounding piano theme.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Sort of. Betraying Olson and basically putting herself on OCU's hitlist seemed to be at least partly motivated by her crush on Royd.
  • The Mole: It turned out she knew everything about what Olson and Driscoll had been up to behind the scene and even helped the two spy on the Canyon Crows. She got better however - she overcame her blind obedience and betrayed Olson, then once the fight was over, she asked Royd to kill her. Lucky for her, Royd invited her to join the quest to bring down the BD Project instead.
  • Not So Stoic: She had a major emotional moment when she realized that Royd's love for Karen was strong enough that he was willing to risk death just to find out the truth about her fate.
  • Only Sane Woman: Also one of the more sane members of the Crows.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Also the Blue to Royd's Red.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: She left the team when Royd decided to go off to investigate Nirvana Institute, against Olson's order (buildup to Mission 23). It's only temporary.
  • Stop, or I Will Shoot!: Variation. In OCU Mission 20, if Natalie's deployed, she would threaten to shoot Royd when he prepared to engage Driscoll against orders.
  • Team Mom: For most of 1st, she's the person who was trying to ensure the Canyon Crows follow the orders of their superiors and generally stay where they should be. The Crows were unwilling to fight her when she, under the command of Olson, came to help pursue the Crows (OCU Mission 25).
  • Undying Loyalty: To Olson and ultimately the OCU Army. She overcame her loyalty to the former over the course of the story.
  • Western Terrorists: By the time of the Epilogue, she, along with the rest of the Crows, joined Royd and Gentz in their fight against globalist powers. They were designated as terrorists by the said powers.
Natalie: Royd, this island's problems are too heavy for you to bear alone.

Keith Carabell and Joynas "J.J." Jeriaska

Keith Carabell and Joynas "J.J." Jeriaska

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/keithjj.png
Keith (left) and J.J. (right) - picture not drawn to scale
Two mercenary soldiers who joined the Crows early on. Keith was a cocky wise-guy type from USN America and partnered with the serious J. J., who was working to send money to his family in a poor country in Africa. The two had quite different temperament: In stark contrast to the money-hungry and pragmatic Keith, J.J. was the idealistic and conscientious mercenary. While Keith disliked doing unpaid work, J.J. had a sense of compassion and Honor Before Reason that restraint him from killing everything in sight for money. What connected the two, however, was a shared motivation to earn the money they got from being part of the Crows.

When Royd decided to investigate Nirvana Institute, the duo left the team as they disliked doing unpaid work. But they followed Natalie along when the latter decided to turn against Olson.

  • Back-to-Back Badasses: This was their pose the first time they appeared (OCU Mission 2) - they're getting surrounded by USN forces, and they stood together back-to-back, each facing one side of the enemy forces that were closing in onto them.
  • Bash Brothers: With each other.
  • The Big Guys: To the Canyon Crows. Both of them were mainly responsible for handling fights. Neither was truly involved in any of the leading or strategizing. J.J. was literally the largest person on the team.
  • Blood Knight: Keith was this somewhat, as he seemed to be one of the (few) Crows who genuinely enjoyed fighting in war to an extent.
Keith (As he said goodbye to Royd): ... It's been fun.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Keith. He provided a nice relaxing contrast to Royd, Ryuji, and Natalie.
(Royd, Ryuji, and Natalie dropped in as reinforcement.)
Ryuji: You two were ordered to reconnoitre! Why the hell are you surrounded!?
Keith: We messed up, I guess. You know, shit happens.
  • Defector from Decadence: They joined Natalie when she decided to turn against Olson - who was trying to capture the Crows for knowing too much about the BD Project (OCU Mission 25).
  • Dreadlock Warrior: J.J.
  • Gentle Giant: J.J. was a downplayed example. He was the largest guy on the team. At the same time, while he was still motivated mainly by money, he had also shown compassion from time to time (especially when compared to Keith).
  • The Giant: According to his bio, J.J. was at a whooping 192 cm tall, towering over all of the other members of the Crows.
  • Heel–Face Turn: They briefly became enemy units when Olson took them and Natalie along to pursue the Crows, but they joined Natalie in turning against Olson mid-battle (OCU Mission 25).
  • Hired Guns: While the whole Canyon Crows were technically this, Keith and J.J. stood out in that they were the ones most explicitly Only in It for the Money. They even left the team at one point, because Royd was doing something that wouldn't get them paid.
  • Informed Poverty: J.J.'s backstory was that he worked as a mercenary because he was from a poor African country and his family needed money. This aspect of his character, however, wasn't shown all that much in the game proper.
  • Jack of All Trades: Keith is viable as any of the three classes, making him one of the more versatile playable characters in 1st.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Keith. At first, he came across as a money-hungry mercenary who would happily kill people for money. But the fact that he willingly joined Natalie in turning against Olson meant that he did have a conscience after all. It's also notable that he and J.J. were the first to show up help Royd and Gentz in the epilogue.
  • Meaningful Name: They nicknamed their wanzers Jerrycan (Keith) and Hunter J (J.J.) respectively. It's quite fitting for Keith to jokingly name his wanzer after a type of military fuel container.
  • More Dakka: ... In contrast to Keith, J.J. is more of a dedicated Assault-class pilot.
  • Nice Guy: J.J. was this. Keith was more of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Only in It for the Money: They were motivated solely by money until they started to genuinely like the Canyon Crows. In fact, they regularly got into trouble due to their pursuit of better pay. Examples included Mission 10, in which Molly lured the two into a fight against USN troops by tipping them off about the whereabouts of some USN cargo trucks.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Keith was the Red while J.J. was the Blue. Keith would happily run into a fight if he thinks it could get him paid, while J.J. would be pursuing money instead out of concerns for his family's needs.
J.J.: Unlike Keith, I can't kill people for money I don't actually need.
  • Scary Black Man: J.J., being physically imposing and motivated mainly by money, could come across as this at first glance. It was quickly subverted, since he was shown to be more compassionate than Keith and only fought due to his family's need for money.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: They left the team when Royd decided to go off to investigate Nirvana Institute, against Olson's order (buildup to Mission 23). It's only temporary.
  • Spiky Hair: Keith's hair might be the proof that the FM universe has anti-gravity technology.
  • Those Two Guys: Throughout the entirety of 1st, they were never seen without each other, though Keith did appear without J.J. in the secret mission in 2.
  • Token Minority: J.J. was the only black guy on the Crows, also making him Keith's Token Black Friend.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: The two regularly ripped on each other, but it didn't change the fact that they'd always back each other up in life-and-death situations. The first time they appeared, they're getting surrounded by USN wanzers, and they're arguing over which of them was at fault for getting the duo into this mess, while standing back-to-back, each facing one of the two groups of enemies.
  • Western Terrorists / African Terrorists: Firmly this by the time of the epilogue.

    Frederick Lancaster

Frederick Lancaster

click to see his artwork in 4 note
Frederick Lancaster was an OCU Australian reporter. His passion as a journalist took him to Huffman Island during the Second Huffman Conflict, where he was recording footage of a cargo plane containing precious cargo when he was fired upon by USN pilots. Saved by the Canyon Crows, he joined the outfit to get more info on the war. Frederick was arguably the most amiable and agreeable of the bunch, right up there with J.J., Paul, Hans, and Peewie.

Frederick gave off an intuitive air about him in relating to others. If someone has a redeeming quality, Frederick was usually one of the first to notice a hint thereof. It was Frederick who first realized that Spirit of Huffman was not actually villainous and saved them from being wiped out. Without Frederick (and perhaps the observant Fort Monus bartender), the Crows would have won the so-believed "war on terror" and assumed it to be total victory, and Sakata Industries would never have been exposed for its true colors. After the Longrivers Island Incident, Frederick wrote a book titled "Sovereign Island" to expose the BD Project to the public, causing global outcry that eventually pressured the great powers into admitting their atrocities during the war.

Later, Lancaster continued to do more stories based on the fallout of Zaftra's involment in the incident, getting himself involved in the EC Crisis 5 years after the Second Huffman Conflict (the events of 4). He provided several key pieces of info for uncovering the true role of the Republic of Zaftra's in manipulating the conflict between EC and USN.

  • The Ace: When it came to writing and journalism.
  • Badass Normal: He's technically a civilian. While he wasn't as good as a fighter as the rest of the Crows, the fact that he managed to fight alongside them and survived the whole thing was pretty darn impressive.
  • Big Good: Became this to the Canyon Crows to an extent after the events of 1st, as the book he wrote exposed the atrocities committed by the great powers during the Second Huffman Conflict. This resulted in worldwide public outcry that placed pressure on the said powers. Thus, while he didn't rejoin the Canyon Crows in the epilogue, he had still indirectly helped the Crows via his influence at the higher levels.
  • Consummate Liar: Seemed to be quite skilled at telling half-truths, such as when he lied to Elsa and Latona about having hired a bodyguard (buildup to 4's Mission 11).
  • Determinator: He apparently spent years investigating the role of Zaftra in the Second Huffman Conflict and the EC Crisis (4).
  • Going for the Big Scoop: He's willing to jump into a wanzer to fight on the frontline (facing many life-threatening situations) in his pursuit of the truth.
  • Intrepid Reporter: His investigation into the Spirit of Huffman was pivotal to stopping the Canyon Crows from wiping out the alleged terrorist group. This resulted in the Crows having a conversation with Gentz and thus learning the truth behind the Second Huffman Conflict.
  • Knowledge Broker: To be expected from a world-class journalist. His role as this was especially notable in 4, where he didn't participate in any physical fight.
(Frederick met Elsa and Latona inside the Durandal HQ)
Frederick: Elsa... you're a member of the Durandal team that was in Poland.
Latona: How did you get that information?
Frederick: Hey, I'm not your ordinary journie, you know? I have my sources. What intrigues me, though, is how you were able to predict the attack on the resource base.
Latona: I hope you find our security guards as intriguing, because I'm calling them right now.
Frederick: Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on a minute! I didn't just come in here to ask questions. I have some info you people might be interested in.
    Elsa: Info?
  • The Load: On the gameplay side of things, he was a Master of None. When he asked Royd if he could join the Crows, Royd responded with the usual apathetic "do what you want". Natalie was clearly dismayed at Royd's decision, likely worried that Frederick would become The Load to the team (OCU Mission 3).
  • Married to the Job: Had a habit of chasing after the shady businesses of the supernations, at the expense of his own personal safety or the time he could spend with his family, to the dismay of his daughter Sayuri.
  • Master of None: As befitting for someone who wasn't actually a soldier, he wasn't particularly good at any of the three job classes, though he could still be useful given proper training.
  • Meaningful Name: It's quite fitting for a reporter to nickname his wanzer Witness.
  • Mr. Exposition: As expected from a reporter and info gatherer. His role as this was especially notable in 4, e.g., he was the one who told the Durandal about the possibility that Rolf Wagner was a Zaftran spy.
  • Nerves of Steel: He happily went onto the frontline in his quest for the big scoop, and he didn't even flinch when Latona threatened to call security on him. This guy had guts.
  • Nice Guy: It's hard to find an instance where Frederick was mean to or mad at someone. He even managed to start a conversation with the Spirit of Huffman. Also, in 4, he apologized to Latona for accusing Zaftra of being behind the attacks on German Bases (buildup to Mission 11).
  • Non-Action Guy: Became this in 4. He still played a role in the plot, but he didn't participate in any fight this time around.
  • Recurring Character: One of the few characters to play major plot roles in more than one game note . He was formally introduced in 1st, then he showed up again in 4 to continue his investigation - one of the unresolved plot elements in 1st was Zaftra's involvement in the Second Huffman Conflict. This plotline eventually led to the events of 4, during which it was revealed that Zaftra had been desperately trying to restore their country to power due to economic hardships and the setback they suffered in the Second Huffman Conflict.
  • Secret Chaser: His primary motivation, whether in 1st or 4.
Frederick: Whoever is responsible... I'll find them.
  • Ship Tease: Had some minor ones with Elsa Eliane. Nothing came out of it.
Hermes: Oh, I almost forgot. There was a call for you back at the base, Arrow Six.
Elsa: Me? Who was it from?
Hermes: It was that journalist again. Uh... what's his name?
    Latona: Lancaster.
Hermes: Yeah, that guy. He said he'd be waiting at the usual place.
  • The Sneaky Guy: He seemed to have quite a knack of sneaking around, seeing that he managed to sneak into Glaeser's office, and later the Durandal HQ (buildup to 4's Mission 11). On the gameplay side of things, he was one of the only pilots in 1st to be specialized in the Dodge skill, which made him more evasive than an average pilot.

    Alder Weiss

Alder Weiss

Alder was a veteran whose son was also a soldier, but had been killed in the war. Alder refused to cope with his son's death and, initially, tried to make himself forget by drinking in a bar in Menasa. Although he did not necessarily distrust the military as evil (cough: M|o|l|l|y), but he did tend to think that all young soldiers were foolish for choosing the military life at such a young age. A guy in Grey Rock named Herbert mentioned that Alder was a great mercenary. After Royd went to recruit him, Alder challenged him to a Coliseum fight. After Royd won, Alder pledged to be a bodyguard and to prevent other young soldiers from getting themselves killed.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's the no-nonsense and slightly full-of-himself mercenary (and it isn't like he has no reason to be so).

    Peewee Richberg

Peewee Richberg

Peewee was a supply truck driver for the OCU. Dangerous quests tended to easily frighten him, with the worry that a surprise attack could claim his life at any random moment. After a desertion attempt, he was rescued by Olson from a court-martial run-in and recruited to the Canyon Crows as alternative. Truck driving meant he's not as well armored as the wanzer pilots; but it made him feel safer in that it required he be kept out of the line of fire.

    Hans Goldwin

Hans Goldwin

Hans was a genius hacker who knew how to break in to military networks and obtain classified miliary information. He didn't find much on the whereabouts of Yeehin. He did find something on Karen being taken to the Nirvana Institute, but could not finish his search due to his connection being traced. Desperate to save his own life, he begged to be instated by the Canyon Crows. Hans functioned, from then on, as the unit's signal finder and radio communicator.

    Gregorio Meyers

Gregorio Meyers

Gregorio was a big muscular beast and a Coliseum gladiator in Freedom City who hasdwon several victories using only melee attacks. After the Canyon Crow dealt him his first defeat, he joined the Crows in order to become stronger.

    Paul Grieber

Paul Greiber

Paul was an OCU soldier who disliked accomplishing things by violence - essentially a pacifist. But he happened to be mixed up in the conflict when Driscoll led the charge against the Grey Rock hospital. After being the lone survivor of his unit, Paul sought the Crows, his rescuers, in order to join with them.

    Ralph Dian

Ralph Dian

Ralph was a gladiator in the Coliseum in Fort Monus. After showing promise in a Coliseum fight, the Canyon Crows decided to hire him. Very little convincing was required before he accepts.

    Yang Meihua

Yang Meihua

Meihua was a temporary Coliseum gladiator and long-time friend of Karen, Royd's fiancee. Meihua was also seeking to reunite with her long-lost brother Yeehin. If she ever found him, she was determined to save his life and protect him from anyone who would do him any harm... as the colonel himself was once about to learn the hard way.

    Yang Yeehin

Yang Yeehin

Yeehin was Meihua's younger brother, who was recruited by the USN while the Nirvana unit was with them. The Black Hounds unit sent other USN soldiers to capture Yeehin after he had deserted. Yeehin was ever grateful to the Canyon Crows for saving the day, both against his pursuers and against Olson's enforcement of orders to send him to his punishment or his death. Yeehin had a little bit of inside information about the Nirvana Institute and the newest wanzer models of Sakata Industries.

    Molly O'Donnell

Molly O'Donnell

Molly was a former nurse in Lark Valley before it burned from a raging battle. Mothers lost their children and perished in the flames as well. As a result, Molly was extremely distrustful toward the military in general and ungrateful toward any soldiers' concern for her. Royd's confession to allegedly starting the whole war drove her to wish evil on him. She tried to backstab the entire Canyon Crows unit by enticing Keith and J.J. into mounting an attack and then giving away their presence. Molly soon let go of her underhanded vengeful tactics and did the best to help bring an end to the war

Other OCU Personnel

    Karen Meure

Karen Meure

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/karen_meure.jpg
At the age of 18, Karen enlisted in the OCU army as an intelligence officer and eventually became a skilled wanzer pilot, earning the rank of lieutenant. She was assigned to Huffman Island in a recon squad under Captain Royd Clive. While stationed at Huffman, she fell in love with the island itself along with Royd Clive, who proposed to her at the age of 22. The two planned to live on Huffman after their marriage. With the tension rising between the OCU and USN, their squad was sent to the Larcus District within USN territory. While on the mission, Karen was ambushed and outnumbered by USN troops led by Driscoll. With the others being far from her position, Karen's wanzer was destroyed and she was assumed to be KIA.

However, the truth of the matter was far more complex. The recon run at the Larcus District revealed Sakata Industries was developing CPUs that were integrated with human brains. Following the Larcus Incident, Karen became one of the many subjects used for the B-Device project. Shortly after the Second Huffman Conflict, Royd destroyed the wanzer containing her, allowing her to finally rest in peace.

  • Ace Custom: Karen's Zenith.
  • And I Must Scream: She was eventually turned into a B-Type Device by Driscoll, meaning that she had her brain removed from her body and turned into a biocomputer (B-Type Device) for the purpose of controlling Driscoll's wanzer.
  • Armies Are Evil: Downplayed. She said that she regret joining the army, but still acknowledged that a strong military was crucial for a nation.
  • Brain in a Jar: What she ended up being forcibly turned into.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She made a brief appearance in 2089-II.
  • Damsel in Distress: Briefly in Mission 1. Karen was normally capable of handling herself, but when she saw what was going on inside the Larcus factory (i.e., evidence of the BD Project), she briefly went into a state of severe psychological shock, which allowed Driscoll's squad to completely catch her off-guard.
  • Determinator: As shown in the flashback sequence at Mail River border note (OCU Mission 12), she was the only one standing among the recruits on Royd's squad.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Implied to have suffered this during Mission 1, where she went briefly into a state of incoherent mumbling after seeing what was inside the USN factory in Larcus - operations of the BD Project, which involved using human brains as materials for biocomputers that control wanzers. As revealed in the USN scenario, she went into a state of severe psychological trauma and kept crying Royd's name after being captured alive.
Karen (While looking inside the factor): I... I don't believe it... This can't possibly be...
  • Home Sweet Home: She and Royd were planning to settle down and start a family. Too bad the plan was stopped short by the war.
  • I Choose to Stay: As shown in the backstory sequences, she developed a love for the Huffman Island and wanted to settle there with Royd. This presumably was part of what motivated Royd to become a terrorist to fight for Huffman Island after the ending.
  • Leitmotif: Karen's theme, which is a calm, soothing melody that played whenever Royd had a flashback about her.
  • The Lost Lenore: Zigzagged. At first, she was presumed to be dead, even by Royd himself, so she was this to Royd. Avenging her was a major motivation of Royd. However, she in fact survived the Larcus Incident, and as shown in the USN scenario, captured alive by Driscoll. Later, she had her brain turned into a biocomputer. During OCU Mission 24, Driscoll confronted the Crows and revealed Karen's fate to Royd, which ended with an enraged Royd destroying Driscoll's squad and installing Karen (then a B-Type Device) into his wanzer. She became this for real after her Mercy Kill.
  • Meaningful Name: She nicknamed her wanzer Danger Lady.
  • Mercy Kill: How Karen eventually died: Royd installed her (then a B-Type device) into his wanzer in order to put an end to the BD Project together with her. After the fight at the Longrivers Island, Royd decided to set his wanzer (with Karen inside) on fire to put an end to her suffering. Karen was able to move out of the fire, but decided to stay in the fire and die.
  • More Dakka: Assault-class. She was still this when she appeared in 5's arena.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Played with. She said she found it weird that the two sides of Huffman Island were considered two separate nations. This likely contributed to the rise of Huffman Island nationalism in Royd, who then influenced the rest of the Crows.

    Guri B. Olson

Guri B. Olson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/olson.jpg
Olson was the Colonel who reinstated Royd and Ryuji and commissioned the Canyon Crows to help give the OCU a chance in the Second Huffman Conflict. Olson was possibly the one with whom the USN are most frustrated, a good OCU-ally counterpart to Driscoll. But like Driscoll, Olson was really no friend to any of the great powers outside the Black Hounds and Sakata Industries. Olson was in truth working with Driscoll for the sake of the B-Device the entire time. The only reason Olson couldn't be called the Big Bad because he died early.
  • Big Good: He was the authority figure in charge of monitoring the Crows. Later subverted as he turned out to be helping with the BD Project.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Inverted. He got turned against quite a lot over the course of the story - first Natalie, Keith, and J.J. followed him to pursue the Crows (who had learnt too much), only to switch side mid-battle (OCU Mission 25), and then when General Blakewood and Olson came to pursue the Crows again later (OCU Mission 27), it's General Blakewood's turn to turn against him.
  • Colonel Badass: Needless to say. Olson was quite formidable in battle as well - he was a strong enemy unit when he came to pursue the Crows after the latter found out about the BD Project (OCU Mission 25 and 27), and he was one of the harder opponents in his 5 arena appearance.
  • Consummate Professional: Typically came across as stern and no-nonsense.
  • Kick the Dog: This happened quite a few times. At one point, Olson pulled back, threatening to have Keith "expended". Where the wind-up ended and the kick began was rather subjective.
  • Killed Off for Real: Courtesy of General Blakewood and the Crows during the fight in Rupidis Port (Mission 27).
  • Long-Range Fighter: His wanzer was always equipped with a missile launcher apart from the FV-24 machine gun/gatling gun, making him quite a threat whether from up-close or from afar.
  • Mission Briefing: Most of the time, he's the one who delivered this to the Crows.
  • More Dakka: His wanzer was equipped with a FV-24, a powerful machine gun/gatling gun.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Actively looked for Royd and Ryuji after they were forced to leave the OCU military and gave them a chance to work for the CCs. Later subverted as he was just trying to profit from the BD Project.
  • Rogue Soldier: Olson was already working secretly with the BD Project and undermining the Crows throughout the game.
  • Sinister Shades: In 5's arena, he even got assigned onto the same team as Hermes and Thammond from 4, solely for the fact that they all wore some sort of spectacles.
  • Stop, or I Will Shoot!: In OCU Mission 20, if Natalie wasn't deployed, then it would be Olson threatening to execute the whole unit by firing squad. It was rather subtle Foreshadowing...
  • Ungrateful Bastard: After the hospital attack in Grey Rock (OCU Mission 6), Olson - the man interested in putting sworn enemies in their places more than anything else - made no mention of a raid unit being blitzed by the Canyon Crows. The Crows were probably thinking "Uhh, Colonel, you're welcome!" Much, much later on the story unveiled why all Olson could say was...
Olson: Under normal circumstances, you would all be facing a court-martial right now, but General Blakewood, the Supreme Commander of this unit, has ordered me to be lenient with you.

    Willas E. Blakewood

Willas E. Blakewood

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/front_mission_conceptart_eijub.jpg
An OCU general who was appointed to be the supreme commander of the Canyon Crows. On several occasions, he ordered Olson to be lenient with the Crows when the latter defied orders (because his daughter Natalie was in the unit). During the fight in Rupidis, he killed Olson (OCU Mission 27) and eventually helped the Crows secured a large transport, so that they could pursue Koichi Sakata all the way to Longrivers Island.
  • Big Good: To the Canyon Crows. For starters, at several points, he ordered Olson to be lenient with the Crows when the latter defied orders, letting the Crows get away with things they otherwise wouldn't be able to get away with.
  • Comic-Book Fantasy Casting: Looks remarkably similar to Peter Raymond Powell, who played another Australian General in a Japanese-made production.
  • Four-Star Badass: Especially when he single-handedly took down a PMO wanzer platoon so that the Crows could leave Rupidis Airport (OCU Mission 29).
  • Last-Name Basis: Every other character addressed him by his last name, as he's a general and leader of the OCU Army on Huffman.
  • The Leader: To the OCU Army on Huffman, especially during Operation Eagle Tears.
  • Minor Major Character: Many of the situations the Crows got into were... sticky, to say the least. It would be hard to imagine them getting past those situations without the help of General Blakewood, e.g., when the general had Olson go easy on the Crows, and also when he pulled a You Shall Not Pass! that allowed the Crows to leave Rupidis Airport. However, he had very little screen time compared to Royd or Natalie.
  • Mr. Exposition: After Olson had been dealt with, General Blakewood chose to side with the Crows. Then he promptly provided them with some crucial info - that Koichi Sakata was trying to leave Huffman Island via Dock 16 (OCU Mission 27), leading the Crows straight to the next fight.
  • Papa Wolf: To Natalie. He wasn't too pleased his daughter was risking her life on the frontline, and in fact at one point tried to persuade her to leave the Crows. Deciding to side with the Crows against Olson (Mission 27) seemed to be largely motivated by the desire to protect Natalie. Also, he eventually grew to encourage Natalie to pursue what she believed in (Mission 29).
Blakewood (As the Canyon Crows took off from Rupidis Airport): Natalie, you should follow what you believe in.
  • Parents in Distress: After the final battle at Longrivers Island, Natalie grew worried that her father would get into trouble for supporting them, and returned in an attempt to help him.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: To the Canyon Crows in his dealings with them. He's been nothing short of gentlemanly and professional the first time he personally met the Crows (buildup to Mission 13).
  • The Stoic: It's hard to find an instance where he expressed emotions.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: During the final arc, when the Crows were about to take off and head for Longrivers Island, more PMO units came to pursue the Crows... then General Blakewood nonchalantly pulled one of these, while making Royd promise to keep Natalie safe (OCU Mission 29). Yeah.
    Reiji Sakata

Reiji Sakata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reiji_sakata.jpg
Reiji Sakata was the Chairman of Sakata Industries. He tended to defer his decision-making for the company to his son Koichi Sakata, the company president. He also had an estranged relationship with his youngest son, Ryuji Sakata. He later found out that Koichi had got the company involved in the BD Project without his knowledge. Right after that, he decided to go off to expose the BD Project. But unfortunate for Reiji, Koichi was willing to kill his own father to ensure that the BD Project proceeded as planned.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Subverted. When he found out Koichi's involvement in the BD Project, Reiji was definitely not pleased and decided to go off the expose the whole thing to the world. Too bad Koichi was willing to kill his own father to secure the future of the BD Project.
  • Killed Off for Real: When Koichi had his underlings gun down the limousine Reiji was in (OCU Mission 28).
  • The Leader: The apparent leader of Sakata Industries. Koichi was the one who truly ran things, however.
  • Minor Major Character: The Chairman of Sakata Industries, one of OCU's very best arms manufacturers. But he had nowhere near as much screen time as either of his sons.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Delivered one of these to Koichi before choosing to side with the Crows.
  • Parents in Distress: He was escorted by the Canyon Crows (which included Ryuji) when he first showed up to keep an eye on Koichi (OCU Mission 17). Later when he left Koichi's side trying to expose the BD Project, Ryuji tried to protect him from Koichi's gunfire, but failed (OCU Mission 28).

The Silver Lynxes

    Johnny Sanders

Johnny Sanders

Kevin Greenfield's second-in-command and close associate. When Kevin got the demotion that brought him to the Huffman Island to work at Nirvana Institute, Johnny led Matthew to rejoin him. They arrived just in time as reinforcement while Kevin was being overpowered by OCU forces at the Mail River. He followed Kevin when the latter learnt about the truth of the BD Project from Dr. Gilmore and decided to go on a quest to expose the truth.

    Matthew Lorenzo

Matthew Lorenzo

Another one of Kevin Greenfield's long-time subordinates. When Kevin got the demotion that brought him to the Huffman Island to work at Nirvana Institute, Johnny led Matthew to rejoin him. The two arrived just in time as reinforcement while Kevin was being overpowered by OCU forces at the Mail River. Compared to the more serious Johnny, Matthew was more laid-back and tended to try to keep things relaxing even in more stressful situations. Matthew also followed Kevin when the latter learnt about the truth of the BD Project from Dr. Gilmore and decided to go on a quest to expose the truth.

Other USN Personnel

    Maria Paredes

Maria Paredes

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fm_maria_paredes1.jpg
click to see her artwork in 4 note
Maria Parades was the A-team platoon leader for the Black Hounds, and also the woman Kevin Greenfield was in love with. She, too, participated in the Second Huffman Conflict, but seemed to have an extensive knowledge of Driscoll's actions during the war, seemingly being his secret adjutant and enforcer.

As she revealed during her encounter with Kevin in Aborde, Maria was born in a poor village located in USN South America. Maria was orphaned early in her childhood and was raised to be a guerrilla soldier by her parents' friend. After an attack in USN America failed, Maria was placed in a high-security prison, and was later released by Driscoll and thus forced to work for him ever since. Once Kevin assured her that he would be there for her, Maria gained the bravery to defy Driscoll - by arranging for him to become materials for the "S-Type Device", dealing some well-deserved karma to the shady commander.

At the end of the story, she appeared to have died. But she in truth survived the events and was secretly working for the USN Investigations Bureau. During the Venezuela Coup D'etat (4), Maria was tasked with making sure the La Alianza succeeded to get Governor Diaz to withdraw the declaration of independence, serving as an info provider to the guerilla group.

  • The Ace: She was a very capable leader for the A-team. On the gameplay side of things, while she was never playable, she was shown to be much stronger than everyone else during USN Mission 1. Driscoll also stated that Maria was the best soldier under him.
  • Big Damn Hero: She and the Alpha Team stepped in to save the day when the Bravo Team (i.e., Kevin, Johnny, and Matthew) were getting trounced by a mobile weapon (USN Mission 1).
  • Big Good: In a way, she served as this to the La Alianza in 4. By that time, she was working for the USN Investigations Bureau, helping to provide the guerilla group with vital info and knowledge about getting around USN troops. When the La Alianza managed to take Caracas TV Station and have Diaz withdraw the declaration of independence, she showed up to stop USN troops from marching into Caracas, preventing USN troops from starting an unneeded fight with the La Alianza (buildup to Mission 29).
  • Close-Range Combatant: She was consistently shown to rely on melee throughout 1st.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: As revealed in her encounter with Kevin in Aborde (buildup to USN Mission 21), Maria was born in a poor village in the troubled USN South America. She was orphaned in her childhood when USN-friendly government force attacked. She was then rasied to be a guerilla soldier by her parent's friend.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Zigzagged. Maria's wanzer was black in color and official artworks tended to show her wearing dark colors. Right after Mission 2, she had a brief moment showing she's decent person beneath the cold exterior. Then during the Second Huffman Conflict, she was regularly seen doing Driscoll's bidding, presumably aiding him on his BD Project, which involves kidnapping soldiers and using them as B-Type Device materials. This caused players to wonder whether Maria was participating in shady businesses. Then when Maria encountered Kevin in Aborde, she revealed that she had no choice but to work for Driscoll because he had saved her from being executed, and she wasn't happy about this, meaning that she wasn't a sociopath like Driscoll, after all.
Maria: He (Driscoll) promised to save me from execution if I agreed to work for him, as an agent. If I had known... I would've just spat in his face and laughed.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Occurred to her through the course of 1st's USN scenario. Maria first appeared to be quite cold and distant, but as the story progressed, Kevin got to learn more about her and eventually shared a hug with her at Aborde (buildup to USN Mission 21).
    • It happened again in 4, albeit milder this time. At first, Maria came across as cold and distant, seemingly caring about nothing other than getting her job done, but later showed that she genuinely cared for Venezuelans and didn't want them to suffer more due to the prolonged coup d'etat (buildup to Mission 20).
Maria: If Luis dies on this next mission, there will be no reason for me to stay here. The USN will send more troops into Venezuela, and the people will be made to suffer even more...
    • Later, when she was about to head to the USN's HQ to make sure USN troops didn't start a fight with the La Alianza, she felt gratitude towards Darril for having helped keep Luis alive, such that she agreed not to tell anyone about his desertion (buildup to Mission 25).
  • Determinator: Fighting off a group of wanzers while still bleeding from one's wounds probably takes a lot of determination (see You Shall Not Pass! below).
  • It's All My Fault: She had a moment of this after Kevin got into trouble for letting the leader of the Star of Freedom terrorist group escape (Mission 2) - Kevin refused to give the order to fire at Star of Freedom's base because Maria's team was still inside. Maria pointed out that she should've reported back more swiftly, and thus she's also responsible for the trouble. It's an early indication that Maria was a decent person deep down.
  • The Leader: To the Black Hound A-team.
  • Leitmotif: The OST "Maria" was named after her.
  • The Lost Lenore: Played With. Maria was thought to be dead by the ending. Then the epilogue revealed that Kevin had joined USN peace-keeping forces, likely trying to help protect South American children from suffering the same fate Maria had when she was young. He kept a photo of Maria in his wanzer's cockpit as a reminder of that.
  • Ms. Exposition: In 4, she regularly provided crucial info to the La Alianza.
  • Thought You Were Dead: In the ending sequence of the USN scenario, it was implied Maria was reported to have died from her injuries. AND THEN the epilogue revealed that she's still very alive, now working for the USN Investigations Bureau, and reports of her death were presumably faked to make it easier for her to hide her identity.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Somewhat. She was already quite the badass at the start of the story. But after the Aborde encounter ended with Kevin promising to carry her burden with her, she gained the bravery to defy Driscoll. She proceeded to deliver some well-deserved karma to the latter - by arranging for him to be hooked into the Mir Orlen, giving him a taste of his own medicine.
  • Recurring Character: One of the few characters to play major plot roles in more than one game note . She was formally introduced in 1st, then she showed up again in 4 to help the La Alianza achieve their goals, on behalf of the USN central government.
  • The Stoic: Typically came across as cold and professional for most of 1st's USN scenario, until the Aborde encounter. She kept up being stoic for almost the entirety of 4.
  • Western Terrorists: Used to be a guerilla soldier fighting against the USN in South America when she was young. It ended with her being captured and set to the executed, only to be saved by Driscoll.
  • The Woman Behind the Man: Played this role in 4. She was working as a covert agent of the USN central government, trying to provide info to the La Alianza, so that they could achieve what the USN wanted them to achieve - to get Bruno Diaz to withdraw the declaration of independence.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: She pulled one of these during the cutscene before USN Mission 22. So Kevin and co. were pursuing Winger while planning to drop a wounded Maria off when they passed the hospital. Halfway through the city, they got stopped by PMO troops... then Maria - still bleeding from her wounds - jumped into her wanzer and fought the PMO troops, letting Kevin and co. escape and promising that she would survive. It's arguably more badass than the one pulled by General Blakewood in the OCU scenario.

    Patrick S. Winger

Patrick S. Winger

Patrick S. Winger was a Brigadier General in charge of the Black Hounds. He also oversaw the USN forces on Huffman during the Second Huffman Conflict, coming across as a stern and no-nonsense leader to the army. In truth, he was the director of the Nirvana Institute, overseeing the BD Project together with Driscoll. He did trust anyone with information regarding the project except for Gail, to whom he assigned one of the four Raven wanzers.

Kevin Greenfield uncovered Winger's role in the BD Project. Winger tried to take the data discs of the project and fled, badly wounding Maria Paredes in the process. Eventually, Kevin pursued Winger all the way to Santa Barbara and defeated Winger's personal guards. Afterwards, Winger was arrested and tried for treason, though he was later released and discharged into civilian life.

  • Big Bad Duumvirate: The USN scenario revealed that he formed such a duo with Driscoll. Driscoll was the person who oversaw Nirvana Institute, while Winger was responsible for persuading government officials to provide funding necessary for the project.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Driscoll wasn't interested in respecting Winger, and in fact at one point mocked Winger for being less necessary for the project than he was. This annoyed Winger to no end.
  • Four-Star Badass: Subverted. Despite being a brigadier general, he was never seen on the battlefield.
  • The Leader: To the USN forces on Huffman Island.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: When a "black op" shipment of OCU subjects for the BD project was compromised by Kevin accidentally discovering the transfer in Lark Valley, Maria called Driscoll, who then told Winger to initiate contingency protocol. It resulted in the shipment and Lark Valley being destroyed with cruise missiles. Kevin then stormed into Winger's office and angrily demanded to know why he gave the order to destroy a neutral town and all of the innocent civilians living there to which Winger blatantly lied and claimed that what Kevin saw a concealed OCU base (USN Mission 10).
  • The Man Behind the Man: Played with. Winger managed the USN side of the BD Project. But he was released back to civilian status as a lack of evidence and key witnesses to prove his guilt, resulting in only a dishonorable discharge for him. The USN Intelligence Agency allowed Winger to go free in order to find his superiors who were the real authority behind the BD Project.
  • Manipulative Bastard: As indicated by the fact that he could lie, with a straight face, about Lark Valley being a concealed OCU base (see Make It Look Like an Accident above for details).
  • Non-Action Big Bad: He never went into battle by himself, and instead had his underlings, e.g., Gail and the Black Hounds, do all the dirty work on his behalf.
  • Rogue Soldier: Secretly persuading USN officials to fund and back the BD Project while secretly working alongside Driscoll.
  • The Sociopath: Showed no apparently remorse for being one of the brains behind the BD Project.

USN Army 64th Battalion "Hell's Wall"

Hell's Wall

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/grieg_diemertius.jpg
Grieg Demetrius
The Hell's Wall is the 64th mobile squadron of the USN Army, consisting of 6 core members: leader Grieg Demetrius, Josh Dalin, Ghetta Cedric, Dave Starling, Milligan Ashton, and Rebus Victor. Widely feared as the USN army's most elite unit, they played a crucial role in taking down Freedom City during the early parts of the Second Huffman Conflict. During the OCU's counter attack, the Hell's Wall fought the Canyon Crows and were defeated in battle, with Grieg Demetrius and Ghetta Cedric being the only known survivors. Grieg Demetrius later fought the Crows again in Fort Monus and died, while Ghetta Cedric joined the Silver Lynxes.
  • Ace Custom: They had their own custom model of the Frost wanzer, the Frost HW.
  • Badass Crew: Needless to say.
  • Band of Brothers
  • Big Damn Heroes: In 5, their presence alone caused a morale booster for USN wanzer forces in the Huffman Crisis.
  • The Dreaded: They were widely feared by the OCU. Ryuji's and Natalie's reaction upon knowing who they're up against said it all.
  • A Father to His Men: Grieg was hinted to be this in the OCU scenario. During the fight in Fort Monus (OCU Mission 16), he was shown to be grieving over his subordinates' deaths at the Crows' hands. This was explored in greater details in the USN scenario, in which Grieg was shown to genuinely care about the safety of his men. In fact, at one point Grieg even criticized Kevin Greenfield for always wanting to do the right thing, as that might put one's subordinates in danger (buildup to Mission 8).
Grieg (To Kevin): Listen, Lieutenant. The men and women in your squad are counting on you to keep them alive. Keep that in mind the next time you feel like pulling a stupid stunt to boost your ego. You got that?
  • Go Through Me: They regularly did this for their USN countrymen. It was also what earned them their name.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In the OCU campaign, they were notorious for a very good reason. But in the USN campaign, they were portrayed as tough-but-loyal to each other and concerned about keeping ally casualties to minimum. Ghetta Cedric even joined the Silver Lynxes later to avenge his fallen comrades.
  • Killed Off for Real: Happened to Josh, Dave, Milligan, and Rebus during the OCU's counter attack. Then to Grieg during the fight in Fort Monus (OCU Mission 16).
  • Name To Run Away From Really Fast: The Hell's Wall. As revealed in the USN scenario, they were named so due to their willingness to throw themselves into lines of fire to protect their allies.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: They at first came across as very brutal and merciless, but most of them were screaming for help when the Canyon Crows killed them.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Technically, they're no more "evil" than the average soldiers. But they had this look - their wanzers were painted a dark shade of red, their members were all battle-hardened soldiers with horribly scarred faces, and they were very merciless in battle.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Grieg was on this against the Canyon Crows during OCU Mission 16. Too bad it didn't go too well for him.
  • The Sixth Ranger: Ghetta Cedric was this to the Silver Lynxes.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: The first time the player fought them in OCU Mission 7, they were by far the hardest enemies the player had encountered at that point.

    Dr. Rudy Gilmore

Dr. Rudy Gilmore

Dr. Gilmore was one of the scientists who worked at Nirvana Institute and encountered Kevin Greenfield during the latter's days working at Nirvana. Gilmore seemed to know about the true nature of the wanzers that moved despite their pilots being dead - causing Kevin to have suspicions about the secrets of Nirvana Institute.

Dr. Gilmore later encountered Kevin Greenfield again in Beltchka, where Gilmore gave Laurent, who was eager to fight OCU forces, an experimental Type 90 (a new wanzer model which used BD technology) to gather combat data. It ended with the Type 90 losing control and Laurent dying. After the fight that ensued, Gilmore attempted to poke around Laurent's machine, and was caught by the Silver Lynxes. Kevin and co. finally had enough and intimidated Gilmore into confiding to them about the BD Project and the truth of the Second Huffman Conflict. It inspired Kevin to embark on his quest to expose the truth.

  • Distressed Dude: He was captured by the Silver Lynxes after the fight in Beltchka (USN Mission 17). They then held him captive in an attempt to get him to help expose the BD Project, though he was then released once the Lynxes got cornered in the outskirts of Fort Monus (Mission 18).
  • The Evil Genius: Gilmore helped with the science behind BD technology, but was a complete pushover in a physical fight.
  • Evil Old Folks: He definitely had this look.
  • For Science!: He was quite eager to collect data for his research. He actually poked around as the Lynxes came to inspect (the dead) Laurent and his wanzer. Thus, his desire for data was the main reason the Lynxes managed to capture him.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate
  • Mr. Exposition: He told the Silver Lynxes about the truth of the war.

Others

    Gentz Weizer

Gentz Weizer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gentz_weizer.jpg
Leader of the terrorist group "Spirit of Huffman". Gentz once spied on a factory of Sakata Industries, and the info he gathered drove him to attempt to bring down the company once and for all. He tried to assassinate Chairman Reiji Sakata once, as well as having targeted Koichi Sakata the President by association.

Gentz was constantly thwarted by Driscoll and the Black Hounds until Frederick attempted to stop the Canyon Crows' last battle against the Spirit of Huffman. As the Crows (after being tipped off by Gentz) later investigate an abandoned factory, Driscoll and the Hounds waiting for them to show, Gentz was waiting for the Hounds to appear. Gentz then joined force with the Crows to expose the BD Project together.

  • Bash Brothers: He seemed to have become this with Royd by the time of the epilogue, as the two fully joined force to fight for Huffman Island nationalism.
  • The Big Bad: Served as this in the Spirit of Huffman arc (OCU Mission 17 to 22). Later subverted as he was revealed to be fighting to expose the BD Project.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Striker-class.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Heavily implied to have suffered one at the hands of the great powers and/or the Sakata Industries, resulting in him become a terrorist leader that fought against them.
Gentz (As he invited Royd to join him in pursuing Huffman Island nationalism): ... There's no one waiting for me, and nothing I really want. Except to make this island a place where people can live.
  • Determinator
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: He didn't join the team until almost 4/5 into the story, but boy was he crucial for the plot.
  • The Faceless: His face was never shown in the game proper, as he almost always wore a helmet that hid his face. The only time he wasn't masked was during the ending sequence, where he took off his helmet as he invited Royd to fully join force with him. However, during that scene, the players were viewing events unfold during a sunset, from the back of the characters, with the characters' figures all shadowed.
  • A Father to His Men: Downplayed, but for someone who was determined to murder his targets (i.e., Reiji and Koichi Sakata), he's rather nice to his underlings.
  • The Leader: To the Spirit of Huffman.
  • Leitmotif: The soundtrack "Relative Thinking" was this to Gentz to some degree, since in the OCU scenario, it was played only when it's the Spirit of Huffman's turn.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: He's a terrorist leader who's always masked. Subverted as he was revealed to be fighting the real villain of the story.
  • Mr. Exposition: His role after the Crows defeated his forces in the Spirit of Huffman HQ (Mission 22). Being a former employee of Sakata Industries, he knew a lot about the inner details of the BD Project. In fact, after the said battle, he told the Crows about the Nirvana Institute factory (which the Crows then investigated). It kicked start the next arc - Crows attempting to bring down the BD Project.
  • Mysterious Past: Much of his past remained unknown throughout 1st, except that he once worked with the Sakata Industries (resulting in him knowing about the BD Project) and harbored deep hatred and grievance against them.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: He wore a mask and outfits that primarily consisted of dark red, and was a terrorist leader engaging in political assassination. Later subverted.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Apparently in one against the Sakata Industries. He seemed to harbor quite a bit of rancor against Driscoll as well, presumably for repeatedly thwarting his plans.
  • Walking Spoiler
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Downplayed. He was fighting to expose the atrocities of the great powers. While he had explicitly told his followers not to harm civilians, he was still engaging in acts of terrorism and political assassination.
  • Western Terrorist: A relatively benevolent one, as he only targeted the Sakata Industries and explicitly told his followers to not harm civilians.

    Dr. Mizzete Brown

Dr. Mizzete Brown

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mizette_brown.jpg
Dr. Mizzete Brown was a doctor who worked at an USN field hospital near Fort Monus. After the ceasefire of the Second Huffman Conflict, he was investigated for suspected links to the terrorist group "Spirit of Huffman". It turned out he was one of the most important scientists behind the BD Project, but had ran away because he didn't want to help with the ethically questionable practices. He was thus wanted by the OCU, who feared he might expose the truth to the world. He was also involved with the Grimnir terrorist organization, who were working against globalist forces such as the OCU (see 5 for details).

  • The Ace: Formerly an OCU scientist involved in top-secret research.
  • Ambition Is Evil: In his backstory, he was... too eager to pursue fame and fortune when he was younger, resulting in him helping to develop BD technology, which caused the atrocities that followed.
  • The Atoner: He deeply regret getting himself involved in the morally questionable BD Project, and thus spent his time working at hospitals to help people, in an attempt to atone for his wrongdoings.
Brown: I escaped... and eventually I ended up here. I began using my talents to help people. But I can never wipe away the crime of my research.
  • Defector from Decadence: He left the BD Project before the main event of the story.
  • The Evil Genius: Once served as this to the OCU. Not anymore.
  • Frontier Doctor: Worked as this at the field hospital until the OCU came to pursue him, putting his patients in danger (OCU Mission 19).
  • Hostage Macguffin: Dr. Brown was wanted by a lot of people during the story. First the PMO investigated him, then the OCU wanted to capture him to prevent him from exposing the truth.
  • The Load: He insisted to stay behind when the Crows were about to take off from Rupidis Airport to go after Koichi Sakata (OCU Mission 29), arguing that he would only get in the Crows' ways. Seeing that he's a member of Grimnir, it's likely this was simply an excuse, and he was in truth staying behind so that he could be picked up by someone (see What Happened to the Mouse? below).
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: He was once this.
  • Mr. Exposition: Became this to the Crows during the final arc. E.g., after the first fight in Rupidis Port, Brown arrived and took the Crows to a safe hideout (OCU Mission 26).
  • Nice Guy: The people at the field hospital had nothing but nice things to say about Dr. Brown, who had spent lots of time helping treat people wounded in the war.
  • Non-Action Guy: Never participated in a fight despite being crucial for the plot.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: He did this quite a lot. First he ran away from the BD Project, then he ran into hiding again as the OCU came to the field hospital to pursue him (OCU Mission 19).
  • Walking Spoiler
  • Western Terrorists: A Grimnir member involved in the Huffman Crisis.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: No mention of Brown was made after the battle at Longrivers Island (OCU Mission 30). Seeing that he's a member of Grimnir, it's likely that someone had been arranged to come pick him up from Rupidis Airport, as he was done with getting the Crows to expose the great powers' atrocities.

    Driscoll (SPOILERS)

Driscoll aka Mikhail Ilyich Rezanov

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/driscoll.jpg
Driscoll was a USN Captain during the time of the Second Huffman Conflict, and was the head of the Nirvana Institute controlled by Zaftra. The OCU usually bore the brunt of Driscoll's cruelty, but Driscoll was really an ally to none but the Republic of Zaftra. Driscoll's mission was being used by Koichi Sakata for the company's gain and, at the same time, Driscoll was using Sakata Industries to make Zaftra reign supreme.

In a twist of fate, Driscoll would later have quite a nasty, bitter taste of his own medicine as his catatonic body was ordered to be transported to Longrivers Island by Captain Maria Paredes, his longtime conspiracy partner, and injected with an S-Type device. His body would then be incorporated with the Mir Orlen, paving the way for a final showdown between him and the Canyon Crows.

  • The Ace: On field, Driscoll was an One-Man Army capable of routing enemy wanzer platoons on his own. At the same time, he had explicitly stated that he was necessary for the BD Project, while Winger was just there to "court officials for funding", suggesting that he was also quite involved in the science of BD technology.
  • Ax-Crazy: Normally, Driscoll was very calm and cunning. But by the time of the Longrivers Island incident (Mission 30 of 1st's OCU scenario), it's obvious that Driscoll... wasn't entirely right in the head. Being turned into a "S-Type Device" controlling the Mir Orlen didn't help matters.
  • Bad Boss: As revealed in greater details in 1st's USN scenario, working under or with Driscoll is... probably not a fun experience. Koichi Sakata found out about this the hard way.
Driscoll (To Kevin, who's trying to protect their contact's jeep): It's me. That jeep will only slow you down. If you already have the package, destroy the jeep and get across the border.
  • The Big Bad: Served as this in 1st's OCU scenario. He's the head of Nirvana Institute, which was to blame for most of the atrocities committed (namely the BD Project, which involved using the brains of kidnapped soldiers as materials for biocomputers). He's also the greatest threat in the final mission, being the pilot of the Mir Orlen unit.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: The USN scenario revealed that he formed such a duo with Patrick S. Winger. Driscoll was the person who oversaw Nirvana Institute, while Winger was responsible for persuading government officials to provide funding necessary for the project.
  • Bishounen Line: He starts off protecting the core of the B-Type factory complex in a monstrous, half-finished, skeleton-like Mobile Weapon with no legs known as the Mir Orlen. Once defeated, it breaks apart to reveal the Super Prototype Wanzer Raven, which, while still larger than those used by the player, is considerably sleeker and more humanoid than virtually anything else in the game, looking more like something from a more recent Gundam show than the gritty, Used Future, Armored Trooper VOTOMS-inspired anesthetics of the rest of the game.
  • Brain in a Jar: He ended up being turned into a "S-Type Device" (in truth a juiced-up B-Type Device at best) like Karen. Unlike Karen, however, he actually seemed to be somewhat happy about this fate, although his sanity was questionable by that time.
  • The Captain: He's officially a captain. However, the fact that he could show disrespect towards Winger (who was a brigadier general) and suffer no consequence whatsoever suggested that he's, in practice, outside the whole military rank thing.
  • The Cynic: When Royd beat his unit at Longrivers Island (OCU Mission 30), Driscoll declared that things like the Second Huffman Conflict and the BD Project would simply happen elsewhere.
  • Dark Is Evil: He pilots a black-colored wanzer and would happily kidnap soldiers and have them used as materials for creating biocomputers.
  • Deep Cover Agent: He's in truth a Zaftran. Somehow, he managed to become the head of Nirvana Institute and get involved in top-secret USN projects.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Driscoll committed many acts of cruelty against the main characters, and every single one of them ended up inflicting some sort of well-deserved karma on Driscoll. Let's do this one by one:
    • Royd: Driscoll turned Royd's fiancee Karen into a biocomputer, started a war that got Royd into a self-blaming depression, and then gloated over the whole thing when he revealed Karen's fate to Royd. Royd... blew up Driscoll's wanzer, sent him into a state of catatonia (opening up the opportunity for Maria to hook him onto the Mir Orlen), and eventually brought down the whole BD Project.
    • Karen: Driscoll was one of the brains behind the BD Project and was responsible for extracting Karen's brain and forcibly turning her into a biocomputer. Karen... got installed into Royd's wanzer after Royd defeated Driscoll in combat. Turning out to be a very good biocomputer, she was of great help to Royd in the latter's journey to bring down the BD Project.
    • Maria: Driscoll took the young Maria (then a guerilla member about to be executed) under his wings and forced her to participate in a lot of the atrocities. Maria eventually struck back when Kevin Greenfield gave her the courage to. She... had the unconscious Driscoll (left so because Royd blew up his wanzer) hooked onto a Mir Orlen as a "S-Type Device", which meant Driscoll involuntarily had his brain removed and put into a machine - suffering the exact same fate he had inflicted on Karen and many others.
    • Kevin: Driscoll planned to have Kevin used as "S-Type Device" materials (though fortunate for Kevin, he slipped away before Driscoll could go through with the plan). Kevin ended up being the person who gave Maria the courage to strike back at Driscoll. Not to mention Kevin eventually managed to get Winger, Driscoll's partner in crime, arrested.
  • The Dragon: He's in reality this to the Republic of Zaftra. Apparently, even Maria, who had worked under him for years, never learnt of this during the events of 1st.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Royd and Kevin to some degree. The three young men belonged to three different supernations, i.e., OCU (Royd), USN (Kevin), and Zaftra (Driscoll). While Royd and Kevin both tried to seek justice in different ways after learning of the supernations' dirty secrets (i.e., the BD project), Driscoll knew everything right from the start and in fact wholeheartedly supported it.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Driscoll typically has a polite demeanor, but it does little to hide his Ax-Crazy nature.
Driscoll: Such a naive young man. That Kevin. I hope you haven't grown too fond of him.
    Maria: ...
Driscoll: He is not yet ready. It will be some time before you start to miss him. note
Maria: What are you trying to say, Driscoll?
Driscoll: Nothing, my dear. Nothing. I wish to ascertain that you will be fully focused on your mission, Maria.
  • Institutional Allegiance Concealment: He's been infiltrating the USN military for a long time from Zaftra.
  • Kick the Dog: Happened many, many times. Right at the first mission of the OCU scenario, Driscoll gunned down Karen's wanzer as a small demonstration of his combat prowess and ruthlessness.
  • Kick The Son Of A Bitch: He killed Koichi Sakata, a guy who, you know, helped orchestrate the BD Project and killed his own father for wanting to expose it?
  • Killed Off for Real: He presumably died when the Canyon Crows blew up the base at Longrivers Island.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: As mentioned in The Dog Bites Back above, Driscoll ended up suffering the same fate he inflicted on Karen and many others - being turned into a biocomputer against his will.
  • The Leader: To Nirvana Institute.
  • Leitmotif: Driscoll's theme, which is a very ominous-sounding theme.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Whenever Driscoll appeared, he's usually piloting his trademark Raven wanzer, which can take a lot of punishment, hits like a truck, and can move pretty fast.
  • Man in the Machine: He can no longer survive outside the Raven thanks to Maria sabotaging his life support in the hospital after he was critically wounded in battle.
  • Mother Russia Makes You Strong: Of the "sophisticated and sociopathic" variety.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: For all of his cruelty and sociopathy, it's hard to argue that Driscoll hadn't shown extreme loyalty to the "Motherland", aka Republic of Zaftra.
  • One-Man Army: There's no doubt that Driscoll was an extremely skilled wanzer pilot. In the fight against the Spirit of Huffman terrorist group (OCU Mission 20), he was there to help the Crows, fighting alone and having no problem taking care of himself.
  • Sadist: Somewhat. When Royd encountered him for the second time in Larcus (OCU Mission 24), Driscoll gloated over turning Karen into a B-Type Device. It's hard to find any reason for this except for enjoyment in watching Royd seethe with rage.
  • The Sociopath: He had shown absolutely no remorse for any of the many atrocities he had participated in, in stark contrast to Maria.
  • Super Prototype: The Type 11 wanzer, codenamed "Raven". It was specifically designed to be compatible with BD technology, and was said to be able to handle swarms of enemies on its own when used together with the latter.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Working in one of these with Patrick S. Winger. Driscoll had shown very little respect for the latter, which annoyed the latter to no end.
Driscoll: I don't need to do what I must do. You see, this project (i.e., the BD Project) cannot succeed without me, whereas you... Your sole purpose was to court government officials for funding. And I must say, you do have a knack for it, sir.
Winger: That's enough out of you, Driscoll!
  • Walking Spoiler
  • We Can Rebuild Him: Driscoll was rebuilt into a cyborg. Turns into Hoist by His Own Petard when you factor in events from the USN campaign.

    Koichi Sakata (SPOILERS)

Koichi Sakata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fm_president_koichi_sakata.jpg
The president of Sakata Industries and Chairman Reniji's elder son. Koichi was actually the other Big Bad besides Driscoll, having commissioned Driscoll and Olson to divide shares in manipulating the Second Huffman Conflict. Koichi is the one who, in fact, planned the Larcus Incident that first set the war in motion.
  • Affably Evil: As expected from a corporate executive, he's normally nothing short of polite towards Royd and co. But he participated in the BD Project.
  • A God Am I: Showed signs of being this, though it turned out Driscoll was the one truly in control, and the exchanges between Driscoll and Koichi in Longrivers Island (OCU Mission 30) showed clearly that Driscoll's wrath scared Koichi half to death.
Koichi: Our technology (i.e., the BD Project) has surpassed the hand of God! There's nothing left to fear!
  • Asshole Victim: Koichi was killed by Driscoll in the Longrivers Island Incident (OCU Mission 30). But seeing that he helped orchestrate the BD Project and killed his own father for trying to expose it, it's hard to feel sorry for him.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He sought to use the Second Huffman Conflict and the BD Project to make money.
  • Dirty Coward: Definitely gave off this vibe, he participated in the BD Project, had his own father killed when the latter decided to defect, and was begging Driscoll for mercy when the latter decided that he's no longer useful.
  • The Evil Genius: He wasn't much of fighter. His role within the villain group was to scheme and also to deal with the R&D stuffs.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: He was the president of his family business, while his younger brother Ryuji ran away from home to become a mercenary. He also generally came across as more sophisticated than Ryuji. Later subverted - at least Ryuji would have had the sense not to involve their family business in the BD Project, which involved abducting soldiers and using the said soldiers' brains as biocomputers.
  • Killed Off for Real: When Driscoll blew up the wanzer he was in (OCU Mission 30).
  • The Leader: To Sakata Industries.
  • Older Than They Look: This guy was 28 during the main event of 1st.
  • Patricide: Koichi had his underlings gun down his father when the latter decided to go off to expose the BD Project (buildup to OCU Mission 28).
  • Walking Spoiler
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: By the time of the Longrivers Island incident (OCU Final Mission), he had outlived his usefulness to Driscoll. Driscoll had Koichi put into a wanzer controlled by the B-Type Device and fight the Canyon Crows. When he failed, Driscoll promptly blew up Koichi's wanzer and killed the latter.
