Main Characters

    Cath Avery

  • A-Cup Angst: To a minor degree, although she's a little irritated that her breasts aren't big enough to balance out her hips.

  • Betty and Veronica: Cath is the awkward, innocent Betty to her sister Wren's more outgoing and funny Veronica.
  • Brainy Brunette: Cath is quick-witted, observant and good at writing (at least fanfiction). She also has a head of curly brown hair.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Don't be fooled by the shy demeanour or nerdy glasses, Cath's been known to dole out her fair share of sarcasm where it's needed.
  • Fangirl: She's a huge fan of the Simon Snow books, and her main hobby is writing fanfiction based on them.
  • Love Interest: Although she doesn't put much effort into either her appearance or her conversational skills, all three of the male lead characters have had a thing for her at some point.
  • Mistaken for Gay: When she's about to tell her father that she's dropping out of college, he assumes she's coming out to him and tells her that he'd rather she be gay than pregnant.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Cath considered herself this back in high school, at least in comparison to the more people-oriented Wren.
  • Parental Abandonment: Arguably both her mother and father qualify. Her mother ran away from her family when the twins were nine, and though their dad struggled to pick up their pieces, he was mentally ill and occasionally ended up acting less like a parent than a child.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Wren. Cath is introverted while Wren is an extrovert; Cath is terrified of leaving home while Wren's excited to start a new adventure; Cath needs to learn how to take risks while Wren has trouble staying out of imminent danger.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: She's a very avid shipper of Simon/Baz, and often focuses her Simon Snow fanfiction stories on the pairing.

    Wren Avery

  • The Alcoholic: Art makes Wren confront that she's an alcholic. When he tells her she needs to go cold turkey following her hospitalization, she refuses and tries to say that everyone drinks as much as she does. Art cites that Cath is more adjusted than Wren is at the moment, and says she can go back to college if she attends AA meetings and comes home every weekend.
  • The Charmer: Whether it's boys, friends or random strangers on the street, vivacious Wren's never had trouble finding people to hang out with.
  • Entitled Bitch: She has this attitude about making Cath reconcile with their mother. Cath outright refuses, first rudely and then politely over Christmas, telling Wren that she shouldn't view her own sister as a socializing charity case. Wren tries to throw a temper tantrum that Cath is afraid of being normal and would rather stay broken. Cath, who was making eggs for Wren, accidentally burns them but refuses to make more; she also says only one of them is getting wasted on a weekly basis
  • Ethical Slut: Though Wren's said to have been with countless boys in the past, she's a loyal friend to Cath (despite her temperament) and far from being a bad person.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: With Cath. Cath is introverted while Wren is an extrovert; Cath is terrified of leaving home while Wren's excited to start a new adventure; Cath needs to learn how to take risks while Wren has trouble staying out of imminent danger.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Her dynamic with Jandro.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Wren dates a lot of guys, but she loves Jandro for being a gentleman. When Cath asks if he's the one who left Wren at the hospital with a large bruise on her face, Wren is horrified at the concept. She says Jandro hates how much she drinks.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Implied with why she becomes a jerk to Cath during freshman year of college. As Cath aptly points out during their fight over Christmas, Wren is as broken as Cath and their dad is, but she hides it behind a facade of being the cool one without ever addressing her feelings. Wren doesn't help her case with the amount of drinking she does. Indeed, after someone drops off Wren at the hospital, Wren starts crying when she wakes up and sees Cath sitting in a chair like the past year hasn't happened.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Getting alcohol poisoning once is understandable, if not for Cath having to tell the nurse that Wren constantly drinks to the point of blackouts. What makes it even worse is that Wren expects that her dad will be cool with her saying she will drink less; Art puts his foot down and says she can't drink at all when she obviously has a problem and he's not letting her go back to college when she's killing herself. She gets better after Art makes her attend AA meetings.
