     In General
  • The Dreaded: Downplayed, but invoked by Eichi. Their title as "underachievers" and their possible connection as Eichi's "secret weapon" has some of the other units avoid interacting with them. Subverted by MDM when Eichi lays off the interaction ban.
  • Genre Motif: Described as a cutting-edge rock band unit.
  • Hero of Another Story: ALKALOID is the protagonist group for the main scenario of Ensemble Stars!!, with their own struggles and goals being the main focus as the past cast supports them from the background.
  • Playing Card Motifs:
    • Their unit costumes are based on Playing Cards with a badge in their costumes symbolizing the suits in Playing cards. To note:
      Hiiro: Spades
      Aira: Heart
      Mayoi: Club
      Tatsumi: Diamond
    • Their hair colors also match the playing card motif, though in a different order than the above:
      Hiiro: Hearts (red)
      Aira: Diamond (blond)
      Mayoi: Spade (blue / indigo)
      Tatsumi: Clover (light green)
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Despite being the new main characters of the main story, they’re one of the most mismatched units in terms of their individual personalities and quirks, yet somehow they all get along and overcome their problems together.

     Hiiro Amagi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hiiro_amagi.png

Hiiro entered the idol industry without relevant knowledge, but he still aims to become an idol. He is the younger brother of Rinne Amagi. Hiiro is optimistic, pure, and passionate. Sometimes he pushes himself too much and acts before thinking it over. His singing voice is resonant and confident, with natural and powerful performances.

Circles/Club: SHIN, Keito Lecture, Karate Club
Age: 16-17
Height: 174cm
Weight: 57kg
Blood Type: A
Birthday: January 4th (Capricorn)
Family: Rinne Amagi (Older brother)
Hobby: Collecting silver jewelry
Specialty: Martial arts & sports
Voiced by: Gakuto Kajiwara

  • All-Loving Hero: He wants to be friends with everyone.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Not generally since he is rather reasonable and respectful with Rinne. Unless of course he is attacking him as a greeting, chases him down or loudly yells that he loves him. He is so eager to show his love for his brother that Rinne would rather just avoid him.
  • Black-and-White Insanity: Not by morals, but by how he views the world. He comes in conflict with the rest of the cast because he believes that Rinne finding out about idols from beyond their home changed him, causing him to believe that idols are "bad" and must be destroyed. The main scenario of Ensemble Stars!! involves Hiiro's views and conception about idols being challenged.
  • Cuddle Bug: He’s very physical with certain characters. He’s very comfortable hugging Mayoi in public and will hug Aira as much as he can. However, this physical affection seems to have its limits as he doesn’t like hugs from Subaru or head pats from Tatsumi.
  • Driven to Suicide: After Rinne disowns him from the clan, it’s implied Hiiro was going to end his own life. He cuts all contact with everyone and goes to the hanging garden, a really high place. When Aira finds him, Hiiro expresses how Alkaloid nor his brother need him. He then asks Aira multiple times if he needs him. Aira picks up on the grave situation and expresses how Hiiro seems to want to disappear. Fortunately, Aira convinces Hiiro to let him carry him back to the dorm and watches over Hiiro until the rest of Alkaloid meets up with them.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: A younger Hiiro appears near the end of the Anime adaptation's final episode watching the Trickstar Vs. Eden SS live.
  • Farm Boy: He is originally from the countryside that values tradition, thus he isn't overly familiar with modern technology.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: While his brother isn't dumb, Rinne ran away from home to escape his clan responsibilities and to do what he wants, whereas Hiiro is the clan's main attendant for Rinne and chases after him into the city to bring him back.
  • Friendless Background: Barely talked to anyone in the village outside of his brother.
  • Holding Hands: He likes the idea of holding hands with friends. He and Aira frequently holds hands as Aira expresses holding Hiiro’s hand makes him feel safe.
  • Homeless Hero: He used to sleep outside in parks prior to the main story. Downplayed as he was able to use the school's showers and washing machines.
  • Idiot Hero: He claims to be an idiot. This ends up getting subverted though. Hiiro is a very quick learner in various topics and is a good student. He just doesn’t know much about city life or idols coming in, and the people who raised him convinced him he is stupid.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Speak very earnestly and honest, including saying whatever is on his mind. This sometimes leads him to say things that can be a bit insensitive (particularly to Aira), though he is very quick to apologize and correct himself if he is told something is wrong.
  • I Will Find You: The reason he enrolled into Yumenosaki Academy and become an idol is to find his brother, Rinne.
  • I Have No Brother: After Rinne announced he will return to the village and return to his role as clan leader, he disowns Hiiro so he no longer has ties to their clan. He does this so Hiiro could finally live the life he wants rather than blindly following his brother and clan's orders.
  • Missing Mom : He has noted he never met his mother.
  • Naïve Newcomer: Along with being unfamiliar with technology & the city, he doesn't know much about ES or idols beyond that it was what his brother left home went to pursue
  • Shared Family Quirks: Both him and his brother are very physical, both in affection and in violence. Though Hiiro's intentions are a lot more innocent than his brother's.

     Aira Shiratori
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aira_shiratori_8.png

Aira is an idol who is also a big fan of other idols. He is a quarter French because his mother is half French and half Japanese. Aira is amiable, outgoing, and brave. He is also able to face reality with sound judgment. His singing voice is innocent and boyish, and during his performances, his cuteness always leaks out, which adds more adorableness to his stage.

Circles/Club: Pretty 5, Keito Lecture, Basketball Club
Age: 15-16
Height: 167cm
Weight: 53kg
Blood Type: B
Birthday: November 27th (Sagittarius)
Hobby: Idol research
Specialty: Knowledge about idols
Voiced by: Kōhei Amasaki

  • Affectionate Nickname: Calls Kohaku “Kohakucchi~” and is referred to as “Rabu-Han” in return. He doesn’t care for this nickname, however.
  • Commonality Connection: With Leo Tsukinaga. While they’re very different in terms of personality, they bond over the fact that as they have similar concerns regarding the circumstances of their close friends, Kohaku Oukawa and Madara Mikejima respectively, in A Dark Night’s Passing.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Kohaku calls him “Love-Han” because of his online handle.
  • Enraged by Idiocy: Mostly with Hiiro.
  • Everyone Can See It: There are a number of people who comment about how close Hiiro and Aira are. There are even some who think their relationship is more romantic in nature. While Aira does grow affectionate and become close friends with Hiiro, he tries to draw boundaries and can be in denial about certain aspects.
  • Fanboy: Of Idols in general. The Main scenario of Ensemble Stars!! also shows that he has at least a few fan merchandises of some idols. This causes him and Hiiro to clash due to their different opinion and conception about idols.
    • Ascended Fanboy: Or what he is trying to be as he aims to keep his job as an idol.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Parents: Downplayed. Aira's parents didn't approve of his choice to become an idol. That said, they still reluctantly give Aira a chance by letting him continue attending Yumenosaki Private Academy and ES. It's unknown wether they still didn't approve of Aira's Idol career or not.
  • First Friend: To Hiiro. Although, it was initially a friendship forced upon Aira by Hiiro, and Aira was reluctant to trust Hiiro. They do form a genuine friendship eventually though, and Aira is grateful that Hiiro has been so persistent about getting close to Aira.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Played for Laughs, but he displays this toward Hiiro. Discussed furthur in the Feathered Touch story that he feels very imsecure about his talents now that Hiiro has overtaken him since MDM and used to have similar feelings when he watched idols on TV.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Among the members of ALKALOID, Aira is the one who worked on his dances, vocals and stamina but lags behind from most of the groups he is able to join in, making him this trope. He got hit with this even harder later when compared to Tatsumi, who has experience in the idol industry, Mayoi, who is great at his performances and Hiiro, who has a natural talent in singing and dancing at the same time. That said, Aira chose to not let that stop him.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Kohaku Oukawa, who he was friends with online before they met in person in the main story.
  • Jerkass to One: Aira is sweet to everyone except Hiiro. Being surrounded by idols who Aira feels are above him, Aira would insult and be critical of Hiiro in order to feel better about his own low self-esteem. When Aira says venting his frustrations out on Hiiro makes him feel better, Hiiro further encourages Aira to continue if it makes him feel better. Aira’s unique treatment of Hiiro causes others to assume they’re close since Aira seems to be only comfortable speaking up against Hiiro. Hiiro has stated multiple times that Aira’s treatment of him confuses him.
  • Mr. Exposition: For Hiiro who is unfamiliar with some of the famous idols sans Trickstar. He also serves as this to newer players who are unfamiliar with the original Ensemble Stars! cast.
  • Only Sane Man: Is one to his circle, Pretty 5. That said, he gives zero effort to stop them and instead joining them easily.
  • Sweet Tooth: Downplayed but tends to eat sweets & junkfood to destress. He orders a chocolate parfait for lunch after he receives the news about their group's situation
  • Verbal Tic: His idol mates note he tends to have a cutesy talk pattern (e.g. saying "chuukereta" instead of "tsuareta").

     Mayoi Ayase
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mayoi_ayase.png

A perverse individual who adores anyone and anything that's fragile and child-like. He sometimes blurts out his true thoughts without thinking. Though he has a cowardly and servile personality, he can't ignore a person in need. He seems to struggle with going out in public. With a voice that wavers deeply as he sings, his performances are soft and lingering.

  • ArchEnemy: One-sided, but he shows a great disdain towards the Sakumas.
  • Apologizes a Lot: Particularly when he gets complimented or his stalkerish habits come into light.
  • Cuteness Proximity: He is fond of anyone and anything that is innocent and child-like. Because of this interest, he is very protective of his younger unit members and has a strong attachment to RYUSEITAI’s Shinobu.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic.
  • Informed Flaw: Type 2 which he briefly mentions in chapter 54 of the main story. He has a fatal genetic disease that prevented him from attending school, resulting him getting home-schooled. He then changes topics with none of the other present characters reacting to it and the topic never gets mentioned again. While Mayoi has many odd quirks and behaviors, nothing has yet been tied back yet to said disease.
  • Red Baron: He's the "Phantom", an urban legend among Yumenosaki students who helps students in the idol course on how to improve their performances.
  • Scary Teeth: Has sharp shark-like teeth. Interestingly, it’s not commented on that much by the other members of the cast despite him being the only character with teeth as pronounced like this.
  • Shipper on Deck: He enjoys watching and making comments about Hiiro and Aira’s relationship. In order to explain to Hiiro why Aira treats him with more hostility than the others, he tells Hiiro that Aira is like an elementary schooler who can’t be honest with the kid he likes.
  • Shrinking Violet: First introduced as shy and cowers easily.
  • Stalker without a Crush: The reason of him being the "Phantom" was so he could watch cute idols more closely
  • Team Mom: Noted by his unit mates to be this.
  • Weakened by the Light: Not as severely as Rei or Ritsu but he does not like the light as much. He also used to live underground prior to moving in the dorms.

     Tatsumi Kazehaya
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tatsumi_kazehaya.png

An experienced idol who went on a hiatus from his idol activities due to an accident. His family home is a church. Tatsumi has a kind and level-headed disposition, and he has an open mind. As a priest, he can sense the presence of evil. With a singing voice that reaches the heavens, his performances are gentle and calming.

Weight: 58kg

Hobby: Writing (JP), Keeping things tidy (CN)

  • Ambiguously Christian: Quotes the bible and discusses about his faith very often. According to the Tatsumi sub-story with Mayoi, he is a descendant of the Kakure Kirishitans.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Zig-zagged. Tatsumi suffered an injury that caused him to leave the showbiz to recuperate. While he is able to return to be an idol, the doctors told Tatsumi that he may not be able to fully recover from it.
  • Catchphrase: He says "Amen" quite a bit. Less commonly, he says "Begone, Satan" whenever he feels an "evil" presence in the room as he was a priest.
  • Commonality Connection: In the main story, Tatsumi seems to look fondly onto Madara due to him being one of the only solo units left in an industry where solo units are being phased out. It’s revealed that Tatsumi was in a solo unit before his Career-Ending Injury.
  • Drives Like Crazy: According to Aira in the Motor Show event, he is a bad speedy driver.
  • Famed In-Story: According to Jun and Hiyori, he was a popular idol that many younger idols looked up to prior to his Career-Ending Injury. Tatsumi is embarrassed by this notion and remains humble.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic.
  • The Rival: Was one to HiMERU prior to his Career-Ending Injury.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Tatsumi is generally a religious person and often spoke of his religious beliefs. His introduction scout 5* depicts him dressed as a priest. He is also the only member of the entire cast that is outwardly stated to be religious despite most of the characters seemingly believing in the concept of Hell. See also Ambiguously Christian.
  • Younger Than They Look: Tatsumi is only 18-19 despite appearing to be one of the older characters.
  • Voice of the Resistance: Is said to be a "revolutionary" by Jun & Hiyori and later Himeru that, while failed, was able to sway several students and teachers enough to have a following.
  • Won the War, Lost the Peace: Tried to fight for equal treatment of idols in Reimei academy and eventually caused a revolution in the school system. However, many of the idols could not meet the expectations society had for them outside the school and felt very mismatched with the work they are given. Lot of those students began to resent Tatsumi for this and turned on, though he tried to support as many students as he could. Ultimately he could not keep up and becomes hospitalized due to a leg injury that he would never fully recover from. The school eventually reverts back to how it was before with Eve succeeding not long after.
