    In general
  • Adaptational Context Change: In the comics Gemworld was shaped like a skull, but here it's shaped like a more realistic continent.
  • Feuding Families: Things haven't been good ever since Houses Ruby and Sardonyx were destroyed by Houses Emerald, Opal and Onyx.
  • Gemstone Motifs: Each House is named and themed after a major gemstone and imbued with the power of that particular Gem.
  • Human Sub Species: The inhabitants of Gemworld are descended from Homo Magi who lived in Atlantis but moved to another dimension when it was sunk beneath the sea, and they're still capable of interbreeding with regular humans and Homo Magi of other lineages.
  • Royalty Superpower: Every House has an innate power that each member can inherit through one of their parents.
  • Succession Crisis: Gemworld has been politically unstable ever since both its rulers of Houses Amethyst and Diamond were killed and their only heir, Amaya, disappeared. Dark Opal has tried to claim the throne without the support of other Houses and without a Prince-Shard, and the only other eligible heir, Prince Topaz, has been forced to look for a Gem-Princess that will help him solidify his claim on Earth since all other possible candidates for Queen are either uninterested or already married.

Balek of House Topaz is a potential heir to the throne of Gemworld, and currently he's on Earth looking for one of his potential brides.
  • Adaptational Dye-Job: Blonde haired in the comics, brown haired here.
  • Alternate Self: He's the Gemworld version of Sydney Debris/Ken McCoy, Blay the elf and Axel Walker.
  • Arranged Marriage: Among his possible betrothed are Amaya of House Amethyst, Emira of House Emerald, Alis of House Sardonyx and Charra of House Ruby.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Prince Topaz never took his studies too seriously. He is still young and could still become a good king, but he will need a patient mentor to teach him.
  • The Casanova: Prince Topaz is eager to be married for political gain and personal reasons but he is also a womanizer and flirt. Though he is particularly motivated to seduce Princess Gems, especially those he finds attractive, Prince Topaz will also attempt to seduce any other "commoner" he finds himself attracted to.
  • Cool Crown: Wears a nice crown and is the prince of House Topaz.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: He's the Foolish to CJ's Responsible Sibling, being a lazy and unmotivated Royal Brat while his sister is determined and responsible.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Royal Gems heal at a rate considerably faster than humans. Their mundane injuries can be seen healing almost immediately, but their healing is not completely regenerative. A lost limb or organ will not repair itself and significant injuries will leave scars.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: An Innocently Insensitive comment about lesbians was enough for Scandal Savage to try to slash him with her knives.
  • Psychic Block Defense: Royal Gems are not easily swayed by magic or psionics. Their thoughts are shielded from such detection, manipulation, or intrusion. Only the most powerful sorcerer or mentalist could have any chance of affecting a Royal Gem's mind in such a manor.
  • Related in the Adaptation: He's the half-brother of Adonathiel of House Sapphire, better known as CJ Gennaro of the Power Company.
  • Sensor Character: Prince Topaz can identify a Princess Gem by sight alone, provided there is no special efforts to conceal their nature. Furthermore, Topaz can think of a particular Princess Gem and get a rough idea as to their location and their general sense of well-being. As he gets closer, this sense will become more accurate and detailed Prince Topaz cannot visualize a Princess Gem or her surroundings, this ability only gives a vague sense of the environment. and its overall location.
  • Super-Empowering: With a touch, Prince Topaz can impart a vorpal charge to a being in possession of a soul shard of Gemworld. Those with a neutral charge prior to this endowment will find their powers supercharged for a short time. Those with a chthonic charge will be injured by the vorpal charge. If Topaz's endowment is more potent than the level of chthonic corruption, the soul shard may be reverted to a neutral intrinsic charge. The effects of this endowment are temporary and Gems will revert to their baseline charge eventually.
