* AscendedExtra: In canon, Espa was just a one-off opponent that Joey defeats and is never seen again afterwards. Here he actually makes it to the Battle City Finals making him more involved in the Battle City arc.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards his younger brothers. Espa took to dueling against bullies and other strong opponents in order for garner respect from everyone else so that nobody would ever pick on his brothers. This is also why he chooses to stay in the [=KaibaCorp=] blimp over accompanying everyone else to the Virtual World.
* FireForgedFriends: Develops this with Gundham throughout the story.
* HeelRealization: Has one against Gundham, realizing that Gundham uses his theatrics to give a good show and have fun, while Espa uses them to cheat. This strengthens his resolve to start winning without such under-handed methods, and he makes good on it, working his way back to the finals.
* PutOnABus: Sits out at the [=KaibaCorp=] blimp during the Virtual World arc to look after his brothers and to help Gundham keep an eye on Marik.
* TookALevelInBadass: Comes back with a much more powerful deck by the time of his second appearance.
* TookALevelInKindness: He's much more friendly and less arrogant when he appears later in the finals.

* AchillesHeel: Her Koa'ki Meiru deck: Even though it plenty of her monsters are very strong stat-wise and have powerful effects, all of them requite the discard of the Iron Core of Koa'ki Meiru Spell or the reveal of another monster with the same Type as theirs in order to sustain themselves otherwise they get destroyed. Same can be said for the archetype's Spells/Traps that are powerful and potent, but need the Iron Core of Koa'ki Meiru to even function and are thus useless without it.
* AmicableExes: She and Joey used to date back in middle school, and though they still bicker when they meet again, it's light-hearted. [[spoiler:Until she reveals she's working with Dartz.]]
* TheBully: To Sato and Mahiru.
* CompositeCharacter:
** She takes up the character and role Mai Valentine took during the Orichalcos arc in ''Yu-Gi-oh!'' canon - as a female duelist suffering with feelings of insecurity when compared to her peers who makes a [[spoiler: DealWithTheDevil with Dartz for more power]] and directly opposes (and has some ShipTease with) Joey. Case in point: The duel where Joey obtains Hermos is even in the same area and moment where he dueled Mai in canon.

* PrecociousCrush: Seems to be having a small one for Valon if Chapter 70 is any indication.
* ShipperOnDeck: Chapter 62 reveals she's one for Hajime/Chiaki.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler:In DR canon, she's murdered by Sato. Here, Dartz interferes and grants her the power of the Orichalcos, saving her life at the cost of a FaceHeelTurn. * AdaptationalHeroism: An interesting example. In anime canon, Rex was hit with a major case of AdaptationalVillainy when compared to his manga counterpart (who while still being a jerk, was WAY more honorable than Weevil ever was) which even led to him joining Dartz to get back at Joey. In this fic, his defection to Dartz still happens but what really sets this trope into play is his newfound CharacterDevelopment during the Canada Nationals arc.
* BigCreepyCrawlies: During his reappearance in the Canada Nationals, he incorporates some Insect monsters that do piercing battle damage as a way to strengthen his deck, but also uphold [[spoiler: the late]] Weevil's legacy.
* EverythingIsBetterWithDinosaurs: Uses a Dinosaur deck as per canon.
* GracefulLoser: In contrast to their past duels in canon, he takes his loss to Joey during the Canada Nationals in stride further enforcing his CharacterDevelopment.

Unlike the other ''Danganronpa 1'' characters who have had a chapter or two where they were featured, Hagakure merely gets a brief scene or two before disappearing from the story completely and in such an undignified matter at that. And if that wasn't bad enough, the Prologue reveals that his spot in the first game's killing game/story and Class 78 is filled out by Yugi instead thus eliminating any remaining relevancy he would have had left.

* BigBadWannabe: Yami Marik is a far greater threat than him, owing to lack of restraint and utter cruelty. Additionally, Marik gets played by Celeste a few times and never really moves to neutralize her, while Yami Marik has no such mercy and doesn't let her, or anyone, push him around.
* CrazyPrepared: Yami Marik packed a Dimensional Wall trap ''just in case'' someone turned Ra against him, which he promptly puts to use when Sonia does. While Traps do not normally work on the Egyptian God Cards, his Trap in particular disregards that as it affects the ''player'' instead. Cure ''massive'' amounts of OhCrap from everyone else.
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Marik goes over it after Junko tortures Ishizu into becoming a Remnant, reveals Ishizu murdered Odion, and forcing him to watch a video of her enjoying despair. It completely ''shatters'' his mind, allowing his dark side (now going by Melvin) to take over.]]
* HeelFaceDoorSlam: [[spoiler: Just as it seems like he's on the road towards atonement; Junko ends up capturing him and and his siblings upon their return to Egypt. And in his case; Junko pushes him to the brink despair by torturing Ishizu into despair, and forcing him to watch a video of his sister murdering Odion, as well as her enjoying despair resulting in him being mentally broken and his dark side to re-emerge.]]
* JekyllAndHyde: Yami Marik is his repressed side, full of anger, darkness, and hate, who takes over after Odion's defeat.
* LackOfEmpathy: Yami Marik. He doesn't care at all about potentially losing his own memories in his Shadow Duel with Sonia, only shrugging and saying he never cared for his Rare Hunters anyway.
* LargeHam: Both of them are very theatrical.
* MoralityPet: His adoptive brother Odion, of course, but Odion also suspects that he cares for Celeste more than he shows.
* OhCrap: Has this reaction when Sonia reveals that she can ''read'' Ancient Egyptian. Unfortunately it amounts to nothing, see CrazyPrepared above.
* PeoplePuppets: He uses his Millenium Rod to mind-control his minions, or anyone he captures.
* PetTheDog: Strangely enough, Yami Marik does this in two occassions, albeit both times are immediately negated by his villainous words afterwards.
** In Chapter 32, he complies with everyone's demands and releases Mahiru from the Shadow Realm but warning everyone that this will be his ''only'' shred of mercy.
** In Chapter 50 he allows Mikan to tend to his wounds caused from his battle with Gundham. Afterwards he thanks her and promises to destroy her last when he plunges the world into the shadows.
* SmugSnake: Both Marik and his dark half are perpetually cocky in their ability to win.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: [[spoiler: Yami Marik. Instead of being destroyed after his final Shadow game in the Battle City finals, he was only banished within Marik's mind as seen when he re-emerges after Junko mentally breaks Marik in Chapter 61.]]
* SplitPersonalityTakeover: As in canon, Dark Marik takes over after Odion is knocked out of the finals. [[spoiler:And then again after Battle City, thanks to Junko.]]

* CruelToBeKind: [[spoiler:This is the reason he kept raising the prices Sweet Orchard had to collect to bring Miho back--because he knew the AwfulTruth that neither he nor Miho could leave, and wanted to protect her from finding it out.]]
* DamageSpongeBoss: His dueling strategy is using cards that pour thousands upon thousands of life points into him, ensuring he can take lots of damage without even blinking, while his Spirit Monsters harass you.
* DirtyCoward: He uses Mokuba as a human shield in his duel against Kaiba, as in canon.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: [[spoiler:He truly cares for his OnlyFriend, Miho. Even during his duels with Kaiba and Makoto, where he comes very close to crossing the MoralEventHorizon, he's still kind to her.]]
* GoMadFromTheIsolation: It's heavily implied that, like [[spoiler:Miho]], he's been going insane from being trapped in the virtual world for too long.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Has his at the end of Chapter 48, after seeing that Gozuburo's true colors and a ''lot'' of patience from Makoto and Miho.]]
* HonorBeforeReason:
** When the virtual world arc starts, he only targets those who are actually ''able'' to duel, allowing the injured to stay behind with their nurse. He was also right about to lampast Johnson for cheating in his duel [[spoiler:before Celeste's luck kicked in and turned it around.]]
** He also refuses to give anyone access to [[spoiler:Hajime's body]], saying he'll honor the deal he made with [[spoiler:the Steering Committee.]]
** Subverted hard in Chapter 48, where he tosses aside honor and morals in his duels.
* {{Hypocrite}}: He looks down on Johnson cheating against Celeste, but has no problem doing the exact same thing against Kaiba.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Think just because he cheats he's a wimp? Think again; his strategy is very sound, using Spirit Monsters in combination with Spring of Rebirth to consistently perform hit-and-run attacks and raise his life points.
* ISurrenderSuckers: After losing to [[spoiler:Makoto]], he tries to cheat his way back to the real world by attempting to take his opponent's body by force as in canon. Unfortunately for him, Kaiba introduces him to fist before he can do so.
* {{Jerkass}}: Very much so, as Chapter 48 shows.
* KickTheDog:
** As in canon, he uses Mokuba as a human shield against Kaiba and then turns them to stone right as they were about to reunite.
** During his duel with [[spoiler:Makoto]], Noah decides to start turning his friends to stone for every turn [[spoiler:Makoto]] fails to defeat him. He does this for no reason other than to be a dick, with the crowner being [[spoiler:turning Makoto's ''sister'' to stone]] and then mocking him.
* KickTheMoralityPet: In an interesting way. [[spoiler:He's been raising the money Sayaka's group has to pay to bring Miho back...because he doesn't want to lose her. While sweet, it's ignoring Miho's own wishes, and contributed to her thought that people have forgotten about her.]] Makoto even comments it's the exact logic of a spoiled kid--not inherently malicious, but still hurtful. [[spoiler:Plus there's the whole CruelToBeKind thing...]]
* LonelyTogether: [[spoiler:He and Miho were all the other had while trapped in the virtual world.]]
* NobleDemon: Antagonistic he may be, but Noah has standards he'll follow. Leaving alone people he has no qualms with is one, as is sticking to his word, and he's protective of [[spoiler:Miho]], who he does care about. Subverted hard during his duels with Kaiba and [[spoiler:Makoto]], though, as he throws away every one of his morals to try and win.
* OlderThanTheyLook: He's chronologically a teenager, but is stuck in the body of a child.
* PetTheDog:
** He initially tells everyone at the tournament that he wants them ''all'' off the blimp. When Mikan timidly steps forward and explains that she's a nurse and can't leave her injured patients, he amends this so she can stay to care for them. He also allows Espa Roba to stay with his brothers and Gundham [[spoiler:to stay with Sonia]].
** To [[spoiler:Miho]] in general. [[spoiler:He's furious when he thinks the Big Five might go after her and is completely sincere when he apologizes for lying to her, stating he was trying to protect her from the AwfulTruth.]]
* PsychopathicManChild: Tends to rapidly switch between mockery and throwing tantrums. To be fair, he never actually got the chance to grow up, and might [[GoMadFromTheIsolation actually be insane]].
* SpoiledBrat: Literally whines that he's entitled to [=KaibaCorp=] and shouldn't have to work hard for it.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: In canon, he sacrifices himself to stop Gozaburo and the both of them perish alongside his Virtual World. Here, his data gets salvaged by Chihiro and placed onto his laptop.
* UngratefulBastard: [[spoiler:In the face of Makoto extending the hand of forgiveness, what does Noah do? Try to steal his body. Fortunately Kaiba stops and punches him in the face.]]

* AdaptationalWimp: In canon he proved himself to be quite the forminable opponent against the inexperienced Tea. In this story however his opponent of choice is the more skilled and experienced Chiaki who was in control throughout their duel and proceeds to steal the win from under his nose.
* DirtyOldMan: Unnervingly, he specifically mentions wanting the body of a teenage girl, and looked up Chiaki's breast size before deciding on her. She's understandably grossed out by this.
* EverythingsBetterWithPenguins: Still using his penguin-themed deck.
* GoodWithNumbers: Not only was he once [=KaibaCorp's=] head account, he actually attended Hope's Peak Academy as the Ultimate Mathematician.
* SmugSnake: He remains arrogant about his ability to win all throughout his duel with Chiaki, [[OhCrap right until the end]].
* TheSpock: He uses number-crunching to calculate his odds of winning and predict what his opponent is going to do.

* AmoralAttorney: He was a lawyer while he still had his body, hosts his duel with Celeste in a courthouse, and uses a lot of legalistic terminology. He also cheats the entire time [[spoiler:except when her luck overrides it at the end.]]
* FixingTheGame: As in his canon duel against Joey, he rigs his duel with Celeste so that all her die rolls and bets go south. [[spoiler:However, her talent is so strong that this eventually stops working.]]

* TheComicallySerious: His stoicism and seriousness in the face of [[GenkiGirl Ibuki's]] increasing energy and noise volume makes him come off as this.
* HumongousMecha: Becomes one when he fuses his deck master with Machine King, creating Perfect Machine King.
* HypocrisyNod: He looks down on Duel Monsters as a stupid children's card game, yet as Ibuki points out, is playing it himself. He actually agrees with her, lamenting that it's his only choice and once he gets back to the real world, he'll never touch a duel disk again.
* IronicEcho: The first time Komaru takes damage during the duel, she refers to it as a minor setback. When Nezbitt takes damage later, he does the same thing. Ibuki takes the opportunity, in typical Ibuki fashion, [[LampshadeHanging to hang a lampshade]] on this trope's use.
* MisanthropeSupreme: Has a very dim view of humans, favoring machines over them and believing that they're utterly inferior to robots.

* BlackComedy: A good number of her quips and antics give off this vibe. Comedic in that they can be hilarious, black for the fact that well...it's freaking ''Junko'' we are talking about here.
* BreakThemByTalking: A favorite tactic of hers, especially in this fic. Unlike most examples of this trope, it only serves to show just how twisted Junko really is.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: During Chapter 73, when Yami reveals that Yugi offered his soul to the Orichalcos in his place, Junko actually feels confused if not outright distraught of why someone like Yugi would do such a thing.
* EvilIsNotAToy: Junko finds out that her messing around with the Orichalcos magic caused her fabricated crush on Yugi and the Pharaoh to turn real, a realization that comes as a surprise to both her and her now ex-boyfriend Yasuke Matsuda.
* ExactWords: During the duel with Seto Kaiba in Noah's virtual world arc, disguised as Monokuma, Junko promises to tell Kaiba where she sent Mokuba to if he won. Come the duel's end, [[ForegoneConclusion and Kaiba's victory]], Kaiba demands to know where Mokuba is, but Junko remarks that she only promised to tell Kaiba where he is, but never specified she would say how to get there. Kaiba [[HeroicSafeMode was not amused]].
* FemmeFatale: Implied, what with dressing up like Pegasus's deceased wife to get in his good books. Outright confirmed in her interactions with Yami where she's not above applying her charms to mess around with his mind.

And even when displaying her true persona, it can easily be hand-waved by the Orichalcos corrupting her.
** During chapter 100, she has a long talk with Yami and Yugi about her behavior, but the conversation ends up switching topics to the point that Junko is able to get them to agree that their belief in [[BecauseDestinySaysSo destiny]] isn't all its cracked up to be, citing examples of how to prove that destiny is only what you make it.
* NotMeThisTime: When Tea sees Yami DrunkOnTheDarkSide in chapter 73, she immediately assumes Junko is responsible and slaps her across the face. Junko quickly affirms, with supporting evidence, that, for once, she's not to blame.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Upon meeting up with Matsuda, she ''doesn't'' immediately press her breasts to his back as she usually does [[spoiler: because she now loves Yami instead of him]]. This actually prompts her to get her head examined.

It's stated, during the Canadian Nationals arc, that during a casual tournament that included low-level players like Mahiru, Hiyoko, and Ibuki, Serenity came in 2nd with only a preconstructed deck. And later in Despair Arc Part 1, she narrowly loses to Miaka, even showing off some intense focus and analytical abilities. And that's not even getting into how ''smart'' she is that she was able to skip two years of middle school and end up in high school in the same grade as Joey and Yugi. This trope is downplayed because her large intelligence didn't help her get into Hope's Peak's main course and she's still leagues behind talented duelists like Joey and Hajime.
* DemotedToExtra: Compared to anime canon, at least for Battle City. First off she does not play any part in rescuing Joey when the latter nearly drowned after the forced deathmatch between him and Yugi and second of all, she does not even accompany everyone else to the Virtual World instead staying behind the blimp.

* PutOnABus: During the Canada Nationals arc.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: UpToEleven compared to canon. When Weevil pranks him by ripping a card in half and claiming that "Yugi is gone forever", Yami plays Berserker Soul and continues to attack Weevil even though the latter's life points hit 0 after the second attack. In canon, Tea stops him. But that is not the case in this story. Here, not only does he rack up more impressive wins under his belt, but his deck is a lot stronger due to winning several powerful rare cards (one of even included ''The Wicked Dreadroot'' at one point) that make his spoils of war from canon look positively cute by comparison. In addition, when he duels against Kaiba during the Battle City Finals (as opposed to an unofficial duel); he comes ''extremely'' close to winning him and actually makes Kaiba work for the victory compared to the times they have dueled in canon where the duels were mainly one-sided in Kaiba's favor.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: How Joey takes the resolution of the Canadian Nationals arc. [[spoiler:He loses to Celeste in the finals]]. This renews his spirit to [[{{Determinator}} always keep trying and getting better]].
* AmicableExes: He and Natsumi used to date back in middle school, and though they still bicker when they meet again, it's light-hearted. [[spoiler:Until she reveals she's working with Dartz.]]
* BadassNormal: Like in canon, he's neither tied to an ancient power nor owns any special cards. All he relies on is simply his own guts and instincts.

* TookALevelInBadass: From the start of the Battle City tournament up until his elimination during the finals, Joey not only strengthens his deck thanks to the very powerful cards he's won but his dueling skills have also improved substantially. So much that he was able to put ''Kaiba'' to his limits.

** Both Fuyuhiko and Peko go after him during the early parts of the tournament, thinking him to an easy target without his Red-Eyes. Ho boy were they ever wrong...
** Kaiba does this towards him in spades as per canon, which makes their duel during the Battle City Finals all the more surprising for Kaiba (even if he still ended up winning).

* AdaptationalHeroism: While Kaiba already received this treatment in canon when comparing his incarnations from the original manga to the second anime, this fic goes even further than that via toning down or even removing some of his more selfish and ammoral actions. One major example would be his plans to blow up Kaiba Corp island at the end of Battle City: In canon he considered blowing up the island after he was eliminated from the Battle City tournament without anyone knowing (which would have killed everyone on it), and only stopped after Ishizu and Mokuba got through to him. In this fic; the idea of blowing up the island prematurely never crosses his mind and only plans to do so ''after'' the tournament when everybody is safe and sound.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Calling him a "nice guy" is still a stretch, but Kaiba here comes off as a lot more noble and considerate of others than his canon self. He expresses soft spots for Chihiro, Chiaki and Makoto every so often and treats them with more kindness and respect than he does Yugi and his friends. Also, while he still seeks to obtain the three Egyptian God Cards from Yugi and Marik, it's not out of the means to fuel his own ego, but more of to ensure that they are sealed away for good for the protection of everyone else.
* AffectionateGestureToTheHead: [[spoiler:In Chapter 48, he gives one of these to Makoto for a job well done dueling Noah]].

* BreakTheHaughty: He ends up on the receiving end of this a couple of times throughout the story: Whether it is being told off by someone "weaker"/with less power and influence than he has, or by others getting ahead of him in finding breakthroughs during important moments.
* CherryTapping: What his victory over Joey in the Battle City pretty much equates to: After a long duel of both of them exchanging strong monsters after strong monsters, Kaiba clinches the duel with a direct attack from none other than his ''Saggi the Dark Clown''.
* DeadpanSnarker: He has a very sharp tongue, though he doesn't even use the veneer of politeness a GentlemanSnarker has.

* DespairEventHorizon: After losing to Yugi in the Battle City semi-finals as per canon, he breaks down emotionally in his office thinking he has nothing anymore. Thankfully Chiaki arrives and snaps him out of it not long afterwards.
* FriendOrIdolDecision: Comes across this situation towards the end of his duel with Chiaki: Either he calls of Obelisk's attack, but loses to her and thus lose his chance to seal away the Egyptian God Cards, or he attacks for the win but at the ''huge'' cost of Chiaki's safety. Thankfully Chiaki eases up his worries, telling him to go through with the attack.
* FriendshipDenial: He's like this way towards Chiaki, even though pretty much everyone can agree the two of them are friends.
* GracefulLoser: During the epilogue of the Orichalcos arc, he accepts that both Kirigi and Chihiro ended up being the ones in the right as opposed to him.
* HonorBeforeReason: Despite barely winning against him, Kaiba declines to take Byakuya's best card, The Wicked Dreadroot, and tells him to gear up for their rematch in the finals, where Kaiba will gladly take it from him then. The only reason is because he thinks the rematch would be "too unfair" if Byakuya lost his best card before it. [[LampshadeHanging Mokuba makes it clear as to Kaiba's use of this trope]].
* IHatePastMe: Has shown distate for how he was back in the past - where he risked everything to win, even at the expense of others.
* InfinityMinusOneSword: Obtains the Wicked Dreadroot from Joey after defeating him in the Battle City Finals.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While he still maintains his canonical aloof and arrogant persona, his interactions with Chiaki, Chihiro, and Makoto are notably less hostile than with Yugi and his group of friends. Especially noteworthy is the fact that when Hajime carries a sleeping Chiaki to the stadium on his back, Kaiba actually seems ''worried'' about her. Of course, [[TheStoic this being Kaiba]], he's not about to admit to it.
* LastNameBasis: With virtually everyone he meets. Him using the [[FirstNameBasis opposite]] is usually a sign that he is close to someone and/or is someone worthy of his respect.
* NotSoDifferent: To Byakuya. Each of them accuses the other of riding on others' coattails to get where they are, while declaring that ''they'' had to work hard to get to their current position. Thing is, that declaration is ''true'' in both cases--Byakuya had to fight his own siblings to get to the top of the Togami Corporation, while Kaiba was an orphan who had to win his way out with chess.
** Believe it or not, this trope also applies to him and Joey of all people. Both come from broken homes and are proud older brothers with terrible fathers. The main difference between them is Kaiba's richness and success while Joey still struggles in poverty.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When he breaks down in front of Chiaki towards the end of Chapter 56, he goes as far as to fling his deck (containing his ''prized Blue-Eyes White Dragons'') at her, causing the cards to scatter all over the floor. It's a clear sign that Kaiba is not right emotionally ''at all''.
* PetTheDog: Aside from his moments with Mokuba as per canon, he has a ''lot'' of these moments with the Danganronpa characters throughout the story, which only prove to humanize him a lot more than in canon. Most specifically are his various interactions with Chiaki, Makoto and Chihiro.
** Towards Chiaki:
*** When they first meet back at Hope's Peak Academy as part of Kaiba's test runs for his Duel Disk system, Kaiba is nothing but polite and respectful towards her despite maintaining his aloof and stern character, and even softens up around her. He even goes as far as to give her a few words of encouragement regarding the gamer's own problems and parts with her on good, civil terms.
*** Throughout the first part of the Battle City finals, he expresses open concern for her injured legs as seen when she and Hajime first arrive at the rendezvous spot to gather the finalists and also during their duel in Chapter 37 when he feels like the duel might be too much for her, specifically: his hesitance to attack her directly with Obelisk to win the duel (See FriendOrIdolDecision above). In addition Mokuba even mentions to the others that whenever he talks about her, he seems a lot more positive compared to when he talks about Yugi and his friends.
** Towards Makoto:
*** When he first meets the younger boy in Chapter 29, he gives Makoto his autograph no strings attached after Makoto makes it clear that Kaiba is his personal hero who got him to start playing Duel Monsters since Kaiba isn't that much older than him.
*** During the Virtual World arc, he even allows Makoto and Komaru to sit with him at the breakfast table. Later on when he and Makoto end up traveling together during their stay in the virtual world; he gives Makoto some words of encouragement over the latter's insecurities over being a good big brother and even takes this literally in chapter 48. See AffectionateGestureToTheHead above.
*** He also applauds Makoto for his amazing performance against Yugi during the Battle City finals, even telling Makoto that that he's getting a personal invite next time he holds a tournament and that should the younger boy have any problems regarding fees and expenses, he can turn to him.
** Towards Chihiro:
*** Even as early as the start of the fic, Kaiba holds the programmer's skill at very high regard (despite him being an intern) with how he is able to trust him in taking part in some of KaibaCorp's more complicated matters. By Chapter 51, he even considers the option of hiring him full-time in the future.
*** In Chapter 34, Kaiba lets Chihiro hold Obelisk. Granted, it was for a very good reason, but this is Kaiba we're talking about. Later on in that same chapter, when he finds Chihiro covered in soot, he hands Chihiro a towel.
*** During the Orichalcos arc, not only has Chihiro been officially employed under him; but he also does not take it against the programmer when the latter takes action without his permission (such as involving Kyoko Kirigiri into his investigation). In fact after Chihiro's progress, he even gives him a ''raise''. Additionally at the end of the arc, when Chihiro was worried that he would fire him, Kaiba not only doesn't fire him but admits he was wrong and entrusts Chihiro with further responsibilities later down the line. The scene even ends with the implication that he's having a coat made for the young programmer with a similar design as his.
** He's also a lot less aloof towards Mikan whenever they interact with how he's a lot more gentler towards her (well as gentle as Kaiba can be) and how he genuinely respects her skills as a nurse.

* TookALevelInKindness:
** After watching Sonia get savaged by the Winged Dragon of Ra and administering some failed tests on Obelisk, he has decided to lock the god cards away forever, rather than want them for his deck. This is especially noteworthy, because it's something his canon counterpart would never even ''think'' of doing. Inherently though, on top of that, Kaiba is also highly respectful of Chiaki and even seems to have a soft spot for Chihiro Fujisaki. Chiaki states that she believes it's because Yugi and his friends piss Kaiba off, so he's [[PerpetualFrowner always in a sour mood around them]].
** Considering that the events of the original manga happened in this fic's continuity, he took several of these ''after'' said events.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** He gets one from Chiaki after he still insists on continuing the Battle City finals, undermining Mahiru's condition and even ignoring the threat that Yami Marik brings to everyone else.

In his only duel, he is shown to always be one step ahead of both Chiaki and Nagito (both far from amateurs/pushovers as the Ultimate Gamer and Ultimate Lucky Student respectively) to the point that the former only wins the duel because [[ILetYouWin he let her]] and only ''after'' the latter [[TakingTheBullet sacrifices himself]] for the duel to get that far in the first place.
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: In canon, he debuts around the middle of ''Anime/DanganRonpa3'''s Despair Arc, with his appearance pushing the overall storyline forward. In this fic, however, he appears as the final opponent of the Virtual World Arc, which takes place WAY before his canonical appearance.]]
* AdaptationalWimp: In canon, Izuru's abilities and capabilities border on superhuman with him possessing every single talent in existence at their highest capacity. In this fic however, due to the integration process being halted prematurely by Chiaki and Nagito's efforts, Izuru only awakens at 62% and while he is still more than able to keep both Ultimates at bay; the incomplete process means he isn't as "perfect" as he is in canon. This later translates to Hajime himself as while Hajime does gain enhanced abilities that allow him to be more flexible, it does not make him any better than those who are more specialized in their respective fields.
* AffablyEvil: As affable as [[TheStoic Izuru]] gets, but he's pretty mild and polite when Chiaki and Nagito wake him up. At first he intends to go back to integrating into Hajime's body and ignore them; it's only when they make it clear they're not going to let him that he agrees to duel.
* AlasPoorVillain: After losing to Chiaki as Izuru, Izuru starts expressing his fear of the unknown and wonders what will happen to him afterwards. Even though she wanted this outcome to save Hajime, it makes Chiaki feel sorry for him.
* AmbiguousSituation: It's not clear what happened to Izuru after he was defeated; even he's unsure whether he'll cease to exist, be stuck in the virtual world forever, be reborn, or something else.
* AntiVillain: Izuru's priority is the hope of the world, which isn't a bad goal in of itself. But his existence threatens Hajime's, which isn't something Chiaki is okay with.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Wears a fancy business suit.

* AmusingInjuries: Hugely subverted. Around Chapter 28, Chiaki [[spoiler:injures her leg very badly in her Shadow Game with Yami Bakura.]] The injury is so severe, it almost costs her her spot in the Battle City Finals, as well as risks her being permanently crippled should she over-exert it. As a result, Mikan accompanies her and Hajime to the finals to do periodic checks, and Chiaki sits out on spectating the finals until her match.
* AntiMetaGameCharacter: A non-video game example. Chiaki's deck and playstyle is designed to be "counter-meta" in response to how the majority of characters build their decks around high-ATK beatstick monsters. As a result, she designs her deck around that fact as the most efficient strategy to win.
* ArmorPiercingSlap: Gives a pretty strong one to Kaiba in Chapter 56 during the latter's breakdown. Suffice to say, it was more than enough to shock the CEO back to his senses.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Chiaki always analyzes her opponents based on their card choices and moves, all while setting up the pieces of her winning formula along the way - both of which play huge contributing factors to most of her victories.
* BadassAdorable: While a kind, friendly, cute gamer girl, Chiaki is undoubtedly among the most skilled duelists in the series, being on par with Yugi and Kaiba themselves. She is also not afraid to stand up to otherwise stronger/more intimidating characters such as Yami or Kaiba when giving them a piece of her mind, all without backing down or losing her composure whatsoever.
* BadassInDistress:
** In Chapter 12, she gets abducted by two Rare Hunters, requiring Hajime to duel both of them in order to save her.
** She also [[spoiler: loses her soul to the Orichalcos upon losing to Nagito.]]

Chiaki is the only other duelist besides Yugi capable of pushing him to his limits and even before their duel in the Battle City finals, shows visible worry about his chances against her to the point of specifically altering his deck should he face her. His concerns hold true come their duel at Chapter 37: she has him on the ropes for most of the duel, with Kaiba only winning at the skin of his teeth.
* EleventhHourRanger: She (or more specifically her soul) assists Hajime against the Great Leviathan while Hajime is inside it during the final battle of the Orichalcos arc.
* FriendlessBackground: Prior to meeting Hajime and the rest of Class 77-B, she lived in her own solitary world as a result of her gaming turning people away and at worst driving them into despair. This explains part of her large attachment to Hajime as he was the first person (besides [[FriendlyRival Eliza]]) to not turn away from her talent. [[spoiler: It's also what drives her to the DespairEventHorizon when she thinks her talent has driven away ''even Hajime'' in chapter 49, when she thinks [[YouAreTooLate she's too late to save him from becoming Izuru]]]].
* FusionDance: Uses a mix of her deck and Hajime's Fusion-based deck during her duel against Izuru in Chapter 50 as a way for her to have Hajime by her side in spirit and to get through to him. She also runs a couple of Fusions in her new Thunder Dragon hybrid deck as revealed during the Canada Nationals arc.
* GamerGirl: As expected of the Ultimate Gamer.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: Gives a ''really'' big one to Kaiba in Chapter 56, after the latter loses his duel with Yugi, complete with a [[ArmorPiercingSlap strong slap to the face]] when he gets too far in his despair.

** Does this to cap off her BadAssBoast to Kaiba during the last turns of their duel in Chapter 37, clearly emulating [[Franchise/AceAttorney Phoenix Wright]] when doing so.
** She later repeats the gesture twice in Chapter 49: First when she defeats the duel computer, and later when she and Nagito challenge [[spoiler: Izuru to a duel in order to get Hajime back.]]

* JackOfAllStats: While being the "Ultimate Gamer" means she highly-skilled at a large variety of games; Chiaki can still be outmatched by characters who highly specialize on a particular game. A good example of this is Seto Kaiba, who as the "Ultimate Duelist" is more than match for her in Duel Monsters and it is suggested that Chiaki has actually yet to beat him in a duel despite coming in really close.
* LeeroyJenkins: [[spoiler:Upon learning about the Kamukura Project, she immediately charges in to save Hajime...without any plan on how to do it, as she admits in Chapter 46. Fortunately for her, Chisa has an idea.]]
* LetsGetDangerous: Goes into this whenever she is finally ready to go for her winning formula and/or her BerserkButton gets pressed.
* LonelyAtTheTop: Her gaming and dueling skills have led her to a life of incredible isolation; all her victories left her with nothing but a hollow feeling, people either didn't want to play with her because she always won or became so obsessed with defeating her. And sometimes her opponents take losing to her so badly, that they went down darker paths feeling disillusioned about their skills. Sadly, this included [[ParentalNeglect her own parents]].
* MoralityPet: Chiaki is one of the few characters Kaiba is remarkably nice to, and is also another one who brings out the better side of him.
* NervesOfSteel: Chiaki has a tendency to takes most of what happens around her in stride. In duels, she rarely loses her cool and composure even when it seems like she's at the disadvantage or when she is facing against opponents like Celeste or Kaiba. Outside of duels, she won't flinch at the sight of Kaiba's glare, and isn't afraid to call out Nagito's bigotry towards Hajime or Kaiba prioritizing his personal interests over the welfare of everyone else after [[spoiler: Yami Marik sent Mahiru to the Shadow Realm]]. Even wandering a virtual artic wasteland is no big deal for her; she simply treated it like one of her platform games, leading Crump to silently exclaim "does nothing really faze this girl?"
* NiceGirl: Chiaki is kind, friendly and caring towards everyone she meets which endears her to her classmates, Hajime and even Kaiba. Gundham even gives her the nickname "The Thoughtful One" as a result of this. She was also willing to [[spoiler:forgive and feel sympathy for Izuru Kamukura when he was about to disappear despite his existence being a threat to Hajime's.]]
* OddFriendship: With Kaiba, considering their contrasting personalities and viewpoints in gaming. Not like Kaiba himself will admit it though.
* OfficialCouple: [[spoiler:She and Hajime confess and have an AlmostKiss after she saves him in Chapter 50. As of Chapter 59, the two are officially boyfriend and girlfriend. As of Chapter 95, they're husband and wife.]]
* ParentalNeglect: Both her parents would neglect her for long periods of time due to being so engrossed in their gaming habits, leaving her to starve and be deprived of other necessities over time. While this changed for a while when Duel Monsters was introduced, it eventually led to her parents playing without her, as she easily came to surpass them in it just like with gaming. This is why Thunderclap Skywolf holds such sentimental value to her as it represents a time where her father actually paid attention to her.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: During Chapter 28, when she is [[spoiler: literally dying on the ground against Bakura's Shadow Game, she suddenly hallucinates all of her friends telling her to stand up and stand she does! It's implied that, thanks to this trope, she didn't have to look at Monster Reborn to know she drew it. Her friends helped her draw it.]]
* PunchedAcrossTheRoom: At the end of her duel with Kaiba, Obelisk's attack sends her flying off the arena and almost off the blimp. Luckily for her, Hajime catches her.
* RedBaron: According to Celeste, Chiaki has the nickname "The Comeback Queen" in the underworld, due to her careful planning and tricky deck granting her a great ability to bounce back in duels.
* RelationshipUpgrade: [[spoiler: With Hajime as of Chapter 50.]]
* ShipTease: Plenty with Hajime as per their home series: Both of them are never far apart from one another, care for each other's well-being when the other is in danger (Chiaki when she was kidnapped by the Rare Hunters, Hajime when he was sent to the Shadow Realm by Yami Bakura), and have a lot of intimate moments with one another throughout the series. Her chapters near the end of the first round of tournament further confirm she's having romantic thoughts about him. [[spoiler: This all culminates at Chapter 50 where both of them get a RelationshipUpgrade via confessing their love to one another and having an AlmostKiss moment.]]
* ShockAndAwe: Her signature card Thunderclap Skywolf. She also used a Thunder deck during her duel against Crump in the Virtual World. Starting from the Canada Nationals arc, she officially adapts Thunders as one of her core focuses in her revamped deck, specifically focusing on the Thunder Dragon archetype.
* ShutUpKirk: Bluntly tells Yami to stuff it after he starts going on about [[BecauseDestinySaysSo destiny]] in Kaiba's face.
* SpiritedCompetitor: Chiaki solely plays games for the sake of fun whether she wins or loses. As a result, she feels disheartened whenever she comes across people who act like winning is everything to them and that they see losing as a FateWorseThanDeath, leading to her being isolated by others.
* StepfordSmiler: Type A variety. Beneath her kind, caring and friendly personality is actually a lonely and guilt-ridden young girl who plays games mainly to numb her pain and to retreat from the world around her.
* SympathyForTheDevil: [[spoiler:Even though his existence threatens Hajime's, Chiaki ultimately doesn't have a grudge against Izuru. She's even sad at the thought she won't get to meet him again, and hopes they can someday.]]
* WeakButSkilled: Compared to most duelists, Chiaki does not have much going for when it comes to monsters with raw power. Her highest-ATK monster is only at 2500, and she only has at the bare minimum ''four'' monsters whose ATK exceeds 1500 in her whole deck. However, a lot of her monsters have nasty effects that allow them to get past stronger monsters and/or cripple the opponent in some way, and when combined with her Spells/Traps, her extensive knowledge and experience with the game, and her careful strategizing, this makes her one ''heck'' of a difficult opponent to face against.

Despair is hope's archnemesis, but is okay as long as it is used as a stepping stone for hope--despair for it's own sake is not. Not only do his classmates have trouble wrapping their heads around his philosophy, even the ''villains'' are confused by it.
* BornLucky: His EstablishingCharacterMoment in this fic is drawing all five cards of Exodia ''on his first turn''. In fact, his deck is so stocked with Ritual cards and Exodia ''because'' he trusts his luck will get him to draw whatever he needs.
* CurbstompBattle: Delivers one to Andrew of ''Duel Links'' by winning in just one turn as a result of him summoning Exodia. He later repeats this feat against Byakuya a few chapters later, and against Kemo in the Virtual World via his Deckmaster's ability.
** In reality: A fair number of Nagito's duels end up being this, from both sides of the spectrum. Due to the way his luck works: Duels involving him can either end with him being the curbstomper or the curbstompee.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: When spectating Yugi and Kaiba's duel in Chapter 56, he gets a bit...''too'' excited [[JizzInMyPants for his own good]]. In response, virtually everyone around him suddenly keeps their distance.
* EveryoneHasStandards: [[spoiler:Even ''he'' doesn't like the Kamukura Project, albeit because he thinks any hope born of it would be false. ...But in a more 'conventional' show of morals, he later admits that erasing Hajime's sense of self, talentless as it may be, rubs him the wrong way.]]
* FaceHeelTurn: [[spoiler:He joins Dartz to make his classmates' hope shine brighter during the Orichalcos arc.]]
* GracefulLoser: Well as "graceful" as Nagito can be. When he loses to [[spoiler: Hajime]] during the Battle City finals, he's utterly ''ecstatic'' that he possibly unlocked [[spoiler: Hajime's talent.]]
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Tends to do this ''a lot'', repeatedly claiming that he is merely a "stepping stone" used to foster everyone else's hopes. This goes up a whole new level in Chapter 50 where [[spoiler: he sadly muses how despite his resolve to be Chiaki's equal, in the end he was merely a stepping stone towards her hope.]]
* HiddenDepths: He surprises Chiaki with a profound display of wisdom when he comments that [[spoiler:he doesn't believe having all the talent from the Kamukura Project is worth the trade-offs; maybe it'll make you amazing, but if you lose your entire sense of self in the process, what's the point?]]
* JerkassHasAPoint: As rude and harsh his comments may be, one cannot deny that there IS some merit to his words. Case in point: When he uses his "stepping stone" analogy to describe Yugi's friends, Yugi tries to protest that his friends are his power thanks to the support they give him...which only proves Nagito's point right in how their support equates to them being his "stepping stones". Not to mention in the bigger picture: It's Yugi and Yugi alone who directly fights his enemies and who gets all the fame and glory.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Which part you get depends on whether you're an Ultimate or not. To his classmates, Nagito is supportive and perky, if very strange; to "normal" students like Hajime, he's extremely rude and bigoted.
* KickTheDog: Has a frequent tendency to do this to those he doesn't deem "great" or "worthy" enough, with Hajime and Joey being among his targets.
* KnightTemplar: As always, he's a fighter for hope first and foremost, and doesn't care what he has to do or allow to promote it.
* LackOfEmpathy: While he might want to encourage his classmates to do their best, Nagito doesn't have much regard for their personal feelings. His response to Gundham ''[[ManlyTears breaking]] [[UnstoppableRage down]]'' over Sonia's comatose body is to blithely tell him to use her as a stepping stone for hope, which Gundham furiously calls him on.
* LetsGetDangerous: In Chapter 49 [[spoiler: he decides to forego his talks about being others' stepping stone and faces down Izuru alongside Chiaki with him even busting out Black Luster Soldier as his Deckmaster. Sadly subverted in the next chapter where he sacrifices himself to save Chiaki relatively early in the duel with Nagito even lampshading the subversion of this trope.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:He's shocked and horrified when he defeats Chiaki in their duel and the Seal of Orichalcos takes her soul; he dueled her to elevate her hope and force her to summon one of the dragons, not actually ''win''.]]

** He has several moments that are immediately negated by KickTheDog, but finally gets a real one when he asks Chiaki why she likes Hajime. No rudeness, just curiosity. And after listening to her explain why, he simply promises to redouble his efforts on [[spoiler:helping her save him, even if he doesn't like Hajime that much.]]
** He gets another genuine one in Chapter 49, where [[spoiler:he promises to give his all to help Chiaki in the duel against Izuru and overall acts like a true, supportive friend.]]
* PoliticallyIncorrectHero: He's very prejudiced against anyone who isn't an Ultimate, sneering that they can never measure up or become anything more than stepping stones. Even Joey, who Nagito acknowledges as belonging in the tournament, is dismissed as nothing compared to the "real" duelists.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: He gives a rather ''brutal'' one to Weevil Underwood after defeating him in a duel, telling him how he's worthless as a stepping stone. That's about the worst non-despair crime in Nagito's book. {{Jerkass}} Weevil may be, it was still incredibly ''harsh''.
* SecretlyDying: Like in canon, he has frontotemporal dementia meaning he may not have much time left to live. He informs Hajime and Chiaki of this at the end of the Orichalcos arc.
* SeenItAll: His reaction to Marik taking control of a Rare Hunter and telling him about the Millenium Rod is a simple "Okay." He doesn't see the point in questioning what's happening right in front of him.
* SherlockScan: He's able to quickly work out how Weevil tricked Yugi just from one sentence. He later deduces Odion isn't the real Marik from a few oddities in his performance.
* StoneWall: His deck encompasses several high DEF monsters to StoneWall his opponents until he can use them as Tributes for his Ritual Summons or until he gathers all five pieces of Exodia. Nagito refers to them as his steeping stones leading to his desired hope (the Rituals and Exodia) and the despair of his opponents.
* SummoningRitual: Runs Ritual Monsters as his main powerhouses.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler: In Chapter 50, he sends his Deckmaster Black Luster Soldier to intercept an attack from Izuru's Tyrant Neptune that would have defeated Chiaki which destroys it and in the process eliminates him from the duel and the virtual world.]]

** When Yugi and Kaiba seem injured during their duel in Battle City, she quickly arrives to check on them, displaying none of her usual hesitance or clumsiness. That returns after its confirmed the duelists are fine.
* MurderTheHypotenuse: Platonic example. In Chapter 47, she expressed her plans to murder to Hiyoko - who she felt was getting in the way of her blossoming friendship with Mahiru, claiming she deserves to be her best friend and not Hiyoko.

For instance during in the Virtual World arc, she was even willing to tend to Yami Marik's injuries despite what he did to Sonia and citing that as a nurse, she could not stand and watch people suffering, no matter who they were. Granted this doesn't change anything as Yami Marik ''still'' declares he will destroy her along with everyone else [[PetTheDog (though at least he does say he will destroy her last)]], but it's still the thought that counts.
* NotSoDifferent: Her and Hiyoko. Both are victims of bullying and never had anyone to look out for them. They just deal with it differently. Hiyoko cops a tude and yaps like an angry chihuahua while Mikan [[ProneToTears cries and begs for forgiveness]]. When Hiyoko realizes just how similar she and Mikan are, the two set aside the former's history of bullying the latter and decide to be close friends.

While sweet, it's ignoring Miho's own wishes, and contributed to her thought that people have forgotten about her.]] Makoto even comments it's the exact logic of a spoiled kid--not inherently malicious, but still hurtful. ** To [[spoiler:Miho]] in general. [[spoiler:He's furious when he thinks the Big Five might go after her and is completely sincere when he apologizes for lying to her, stating he was trying to protect her from the AwfulTruth.]]

* AdaptationalWimp: In canon he proved himself to be quite the forminable opponent against the inexperienced Tea. In this story however his opponent of choice is the more skilled and experienced Chiaki who was in control throughout their duel and proceeds to steal the win from under his nose.
* DirtyOldMan: Unnervingly, he specifically mentions wanting the body of a teenage girl, and looked up Chiaki's breast size before deciding on her. She's understandably grossed out by this.
* EverythingsBetterWithPenguins: Still using his penguin-themed deck.
* GoodWithNumbers: Not only was he once [=KaibaCorp's=] head account, he actually attended Hope's Peak Academy as the Ultimate Mathematician.
* SmugSnake: He remains arrogant about his ability to win all throughout his duel with Chiaki, [[OhCrap right until the end]].
* TheSpock: He uses number-crunching to calculate his odds of winning and predict what his opponent is going to do.

!Johnson
* AmoralAttorney: He was a lawyer while he still had his body, hosts his duel with Celeste in a courthouse, and uses a lot of legalistic terminology. He also cheats the entire time [[spoiler:except when her luck overrides it at the end.]]
* FixingTheGame: As in his canon duel against Joey, he rigs his duel with Celeste so that all her die rolls and bets go south. [[spoiler:However, her talent is so strong that this eventually stops working.]]

* TheComicallySerious: His stoicism and seriousness in the face of [[GenkiGirl Ibuki's]] increasing energy and noise volume makes him come off as this.
* HumongousMecha: Becomes one when he fuses his deck master with Machine King, creating Perfect Machine King.
* HypocrisyNod: He looks down on Duel Monsters as a stupid children's card game, yet as Ibuki points out, is playing it himself. He actually agrees with her, lamenting that it's his only choice and once he gets back to the real world, he'll never touch a duel disk again.
* IronicEcho: The first time Komaru takes damage during the duel, she refers to it as a minor setback. When Nezbitt takes damage later, he does the same thing. Ibuki takes the opportunity, in typical Ibuki fashion, [[LampshadeHanging to hang a lampshade]] on this trope's use.
* MisanthropeSupreme: Has a very dim view of humans, favoring machines over them and believing that they're utterly inferior to robots.
* ThisCannotBe: Screams it word for word when Ibuki annihilates him.
* VillainHasAPoint: When his opponents are incredulous over his dismissal of games, Nezbitt counters that games won't protect people from armies or war. While he's wrong about restricting technology to only adults, he does have a point, and with [[GreaterScopeVillain Junko]] lurking in the background they may very well need real weapons.
* WouldHarmAChild: His target for a new body is Komaru, who, since this is set around the time period of [[Anime/DanganRonpa3 Danganronpa 3's Despair Arc]], is ''a pre-teen''! Of his three opponents in the duel, she's the one he most focuses on attacking, and he shows her no mercy.

* LaserGuidedKarma: Cut safety corners to make more money and nearly set Kaiba and Mokuba on fire. Kaiba promptly fired her for her actions.

Third and lastly while he has numerous ways to retreive his monsters from the Graveyard, he has little ways to retrieve them if they are removed via other means such as banishing.
* AloofBigBrother: To Sonia, considering she's on the opposing side and yet Rafael himself refuses to reach out to her despite the supposed death of his family being what led to his DespairEventHorizon in the first place. Junko naturally has a ''field day'' calling him out on his aloofness.

* BerserkButton: Doesn't like it when she doesn't get her desired Despair. [[HopeBringer Makoto]] taking his defeat against Yugi in Battle City in stride leaves her screaming into a pillow.
* BigBadFriend: This seems to be Junko's intentions for the moment as she has spent her screen time amongst Yugi and his friends very benign and rather helpful. [[ParanoiaFuel Gird your loins]].
* BlackComedy: A good number of her quips and antics give off this vibe. Comedic in that they can be hilarious, black for the fact that well...it's freaking ''Junko'' we are talking about here.
* BreakThemByTalking: A favorite tactic of hers, especially in this fic. She uses this to [[spoiler:[[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwash Ishizu]]]], give Rafael a ReasonYouSuckSpeech, and get under Kaiba's skin by pointing out that he and Joey [[NotSoDifferent aren't so different]] despite Kaiba's hostility towards Joey.
* CastingAShadow[=/=]DarkIsEvil: In Duel Monsters, a majority of her monsters are DARK-Attribute and are mainly Fiend-Typed, reflecting her true demonic nature.

* EngineeredPublicConfession: Pulls one of these on [[spoiler: Rafael]] in Chapter 79, recording his direct threat on her as part of her ploy to slander him in everyone's eyes.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Unfortunately, the more Junko loves someone, the more she wants to see them suffer despair at her own two hands. If she's in love with someone they need to run and get as far away from her as possible.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Junko decides she doesn't want to kill Hajime and Chiaki's baby, but not because he's a baby and more because she can do more despair inducing things by leaving Izuru alive than with his corpse. Unlike most examples of this trope, it only serves to show just how twisted Junko really is.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: During Chapter 73, when Yami reveals that Yugi offered his soul to the Orichalcos in his place, Junko actually feels confused if not outright distraught of why someone like Yugi would do such a thing.
* EvilIsNotAToy: Junko finds out that her messing around with the Orichalcos magic caused her fabricated crush on Yugi and the Pharaoh to turn real, a realization that comes as a surprise to both her and her now ex-boyfriend Yasuke Matsuda.
* ExactWords: During the duel with Seto Kaiba in Noah's virtual world arc, disguised as Monokuma, Junko promises to tell Kaiba where she sent Mokuba to if he won. Come the duel's end, [[ForegoneConclusion and Kaiba's victory]], Kaiba demands to know where Mokuba is, but Junko remarks that she only promised to tell Kaiba where he is, but never specified she would say how to get there. Kaiba [[HeroicSafeMode was not amused]].
* FemmeFatale: Implied, what with dressing up like Pegasus's deceased wife to get in his good books. Outright confirmed in her interactions with Yami where she's not above applying her charms to mess around with his mind.
* GreaterScopeVillain: Junko is not the starring villain of Battle City, Virtual World, or Orichalcos arcs, but any Danganronpa fan knows this twisted little psychopath is cooking ''something'' up.

** Taken to the extreme levels in Chapters 79-80 where she not only [[spoiler: defeats Rafael before the Pharoah can on top of also emotionally and mentally breaking him]], but also initiates a WoundedGazelleGambit to make ''everyone'' think she's the victim among the two duelists. And even when displaying her true persona, it can easily be hand-waved by the Orichalcos corrupting her.
** During chapter 100, she has a long talk with Yami and Yugi about her behavior, but the conversation ends up switching topics to the point that Junko is able to get them to agree that their belief in [[BecauseDestinySaysSo destiny]] isn't all its cracked up to be, citing examples of how to prove that destiny is only what you make it.
* NotMeThisTime: When Tea sees Yami DrunkOnTheDarkSide in chapter 73, she immediately assumes Junko is responsible and slaps her across the face. Junko quickly affirms, with supporting evidence, that, for once, she's not to blame.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Upon meeting up with Matsuda, she ''doesn't'' immediately press her breasts to his back as she usually does [[spoiler: because she now loves Yami instead of him]]. This actually prompts her to get her head examined.
* PoisonousFriend: And very ''very'' subtle about it too. Junko has spent some of her interactions with the Pharaoh trying to guide him in the direction of falling into despair. And his duels with [[DrunkOnTheDarkSide Rafael]] and [[UnstoppableRage Weevil]] aren't helping matters...
* PrecisionFStrike: During her duel with Rafael, she mimics a line from Abridged regarding his use of Dreadscythe and calls him a "Giant ''fucking'' hypocrite".
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Delivers one to Weevil by [[WebVideo/YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries quoting the abridged series]], including a mention of [[JokeCharacter MushroomMan]].
** She also delivers one to Rafael that also doubles as a BreakingSpeech [[spoiler:during their duel]].
* StepfordSmiler: Type C, aka "looks nice and friendly on the outside, ''out for blood'' on the inside."

* VillainTakesAnInterest: Makoto's determination, luck, and optimistic nature catch her eye immediately. The fic also starts when Junko becomes interested in Duel Monsters as a potential way to bring despair.

* CowardlyLion: After the full extent of Marik's powers is unveiled, Komaru urges her brother to give up and go home, believing that they don't belong in a fight like this. Regardless, she'll still follow him into danger, no matter what.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Minor example. Her [[IdiotHair ahoge]] pops up during her duel with Nezbitt, reflecting her recent [[TookALevelInBadass level in badass]]. Though Makoto later wets it back down with his finger in a later chapter, likely referring to the fact that Komaru's time in the spotlight is at an end given the ''Franchise/{{Danganronpa}}'' refers to the ahoge as "Protagonist Hair".
* {{Fangirl}}: A huge one for Sayaka's idol group, Sweet Orchard. Watching her brother duel them and win, getting them both the opportunity to meet the group in person, makes Komaru totally [[{{Squee}} flip out in excitement]]. She does this all over again when meeting Junko, who at that point she only knows as the leading fashionista for girls, and ''again'' when Yugi compliments her dueling.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: She gets a chance to duel herself in the three-on-one duel, with Nezbitt facing her, Mai, and Ibuki. She still fangirls over them (and when he shows up, Yugi) throughout the duel.
* MagicalGirl: Uses a Spell Counter deck against Nezbitt, which is based off her one at home (albeit stronger since she can access any card she wants in the virtual world).
* PluckyGirl: Constantly feisty and determined, even when the situation looks bad.
* ShipperOnDeck: She is totally onboard with Makoto/Sayaka, though in no small part because it'd make her idol her sister-in-law.
* TookALevelInBadass: Her turn to shine comes when Nezbitt challenges her to a duel, banking on her youth and inexperience. While she is still an amateur, she more than holds her own.

* AdaptationalBadass: Downplayed. Serenity may not appear in a duel during the Virtual World arc, but she is still much more competent than in canon, where she didn't even know how defense mode worked in her first ever duel. It's stated, during the Canadian Nationals arc, that during a casual tournament that included low-level players like Mahiru, Hiyoko, and Ibuki, Serenity came in 2nd with only a preconstructed deck. And later in Despair Arc Part 1, she narrowly loses to Miaka, even showing off some intense focus and analytical abilities. And that's not even getting into how ''smart'' she is that she was able to skip two years of middle school and end up in high school in the same grade as Joey and Yugi. This trope is downplayed because her large intelligence didn't help her get into Hope's Peak's main course and she's still leagues behind talented duelists like Joey and Hajime.
* DemotedToExtra: Compared to anime canon, at least for Battle City. First off she does not play any part in rescuing Joey when the latter nearly drowned after the forced deathmatch between him and Yugi and second of all, she does not even accompany everyone else to the Virtual World instead staying behind the blimp.
** This is subverted as of late, and looking to go [[AscendedExtra in the other direction]]. Serenity is seamlessly squeezed into scenes repeatedly during the Canadian Nationals arc, arguably giving her character ''more'' depth than canon ever did. [[spoiler:She's currently even attending Hope's Peak Academy as a reserve course student]].
* HeroWorshipper: She really looks up to [[CoolBigSis Mai]] and [[TeamMom Mahiru]] because of their confidence and protectiveness.
