Go To

Came to be as a result of Super Majin Buu defeating and absorbing the Z Fighters without reverting back to Kid Buu. With no one to oppose him, Buu would go on to absorb many other beings in his universe, becoming a master of every skill that exists. Called Zen Buu by the fans (a pun on the Japanese word zenbu, meaning "all" or "entirely").

Zen Buu

"I'd prefer we do a real fight. You can't even imagine the powers I've got now!"
  • Above Good and Evil: He is perfectly capable of doing both depending on his mood or what amuses him the most.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • His ability to create copies of himself which also have a consciousness is not something any Buu could really do in the original manga. While something like that is used by Fat Buu when he regenerates himself after Vegeta's self destruction by having small copies of himself reform the main body, they only reform and nothing else, and it's never used offensively. When Super Buu himself has parts of his body lying around (Such as when he was cut by Goku and again by Vegetto later), he has to manually control that body part. Most noticeably, when he has to deal with Goku and Vegeta inside of him, he concentrates on that fight and his main body isn't moving. So the original only has one consciousness while in DBM he can divide it with seemingly no limits, and while it could be excused that he learned this ability later, the Fat Buu from universe 11 also uses it offensively when fighting Uub.
    • He can access the memories of anyone he absorbs, which's not something he can do in the original manga (Only the anime adds a brief scene where he does access Piccolo's memories, but the manga doesn't have a scene like this). In the original manga, Super Buu could only access Fat Buu's memories, so he recognizes characters like Goku and Gotenks, who Fat Buu fought, but not Dende or his healing power, even though he had Piccolo and Gotenks absorbed.
  • Affably Evil: Best summed up as having Fat Buu's playfulness and Super Buu's power and intelligence. Even more when he finally absorbed Goku and all the Z-Warriors in his universe. They love Earth way too much and this changes his personality. He asks Dende to use the Dragon Balls to fix what he did.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: After his Villainous Breakdown, he gets captured and it looks like he's going to be kicked out of the tournament. However, he begs the Supreme Kais to give him another chance, saying that the souls of everyone he's absorbed are taking their toll on his sanity. The Grand Supreme Kai agrees, on the condition he stays captured while he isn't fighting.
  • Anti-Villain: While he's certainly not a good guy, he's no longer a lunatic bent on mass destruction. In fact, he seems to genuinely care for his own universe and those who dwell in it. He might even be considered a Nominal Hero since he's basically the only real protector his universe has.
  • The Assimilator: Zen Buu has been absorbing anyone with a talent or ability he deems worthy of collecting for the past twenty years, likely amassing considerable skills and abilities. He has even gone so far as to absorb great artists and musicians. As a result, this Buu is one of the most powerful fighters in the tournament. Vegito goes so far as to state that he'd be his biggest challenge out of everyone.
  • Assimilation Backfire: After absorbing Goku, he loses his desire to destroy the Earth because Goku (along with everyone else he absorbed) likes the Earth so much.
  • Badass Fingersnap: He performs most of his magic this way.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: While Zen Buu doesn't destroy Earth like he originally planned to he does ultimately absorb Goku, Vegeta, Trunks, Gohan, Goten, Piccolo, and Bulma once she's brought back with the Dragon Balls.
  • Benevolent Genie: If he judges someone and their wish worthy, he grants it, no questions asked. (Though always Be Careful What You Wish For). If he does not however, bless your soul. He will also grant evil wishes he finds funny, not giving a damn about consequences. Though he also protects the people waiting in line to make their wishes, unless someone decides to cut in line...
  • Berserk Button: Play bad music and Buu will immediately intervene to stop you. He also hates people who win through cheap tricks (or at least without showing a good fight beforehand), like XXI.
  • Blasphemous Boast:
I'm everywhere! I have your Dragon Balls, I have your technology! I know your secrets and I play with your minds! I decide who lives, who dies, and who gets absorbed!
What can you do against an all-powerful god?
  • Blood Knight: He loves a good fight and that's really the only reason he's in the tournament.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Buu's morality is pretty hard to grasp; he's definitely kinder and will happily do things like heal somebody, fix a planet on the brink of collapse, or give out some new abilities and ask for nothing in return, but he also has no problem absorbing someone if he thinks they've got a neat trait. Basically, he only does what he finds funny or interesting.
  • Bolt of Divine Retribution: If you don't follow his rules, you risk suffering this fate.
  • Brutal Honesty: "I absorbed your friends and you'll never see them again. Don't like it, tough shit."
  • Cavalier Competitor: Seems to enjoy fights and regularly does things to make the fights more interesting such as sabotaging the Vargas dimensional shifting technology several times, most notably in the Vegito vs Broly fight. Then he boosted the abilities of his competitors, including Gotenks to have a better fight. This is presumably the main reason he went into a rage when XXI beat Vegito through an instant ring-out.
  • Character Development: The novel about his time after winning against the Z fighters goes into great detail about how he developed as an individual. Thanks to absorbing several of them, he no longer desires destruction for its own sake. Indeed, he develops genuine feelings of compassion and finds that he enjoys helping people out. The problem is, the urge to destroy and generally be a villain is still in him, which causes a great deal of frustration and confusion. Thus, he decides that he needs to become more introspective in order to find out what kind of being he truly is.
  • The Collector: Buu doesn't just absorb everyone he sees, they have to be unique in some way. Of course, if he decides that you are worth absorbing, then your compliance isn't going to be a factor.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Zen Buu has definitely not gotten lax here. He even had a plan to deal with Gast's imprisonment ability.
  • Creepy Good: Is this even on a good day, when he's not an outright Jerkass.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • In his special, back when he was still the regular base Super Buu, he inflicted this on SSJ3 Goku (after absorbing Vegeta, though considering Buu's power at this point that was a minor boost at most). He boredly blocks all of Goku's hits and bats him around with ease, without bothering to use a single special technique or ki attack. The only hit Goku gets in is an Instant Kamehameha- which Buu quickly regenerates from anyway.
    • In the same special he, again in his base form, knocks out Kibitoshin with one punch.
    • In his first fight, Buu beats Xeniloum with a single kick.
    • He beats Tien by simply tanking everything he throws at him, resulting in a forfeit. He even breaks himself apart upon being hit by some of Tien's (relatively) very weak attacks, then effortlessly reforms, just to screw with him.
    • He fights Super Vegito, Super Saiyan Bra, and Ultimate Gohan over Broly's body in space, and pretty much totally toys with them.
    • He manages to effortlessly restrain most of the tournament fighters with a few gestures at one point, with even a barrier made of the combined power of Ultimate Gohan, Goku, Uub, Vegeta, and the rest of U18 not being enough to delay his tentacles for more than a few seconds. The one exception is Gast, who shuts him down hard, or so it seems at first. Buu apparently took precautions against such things.
    • His fight with Gotenks was basically just an opportunity for him to test out the Heliorian Ultra Armor he snagged. Once he got bored, he simply shot Gotenks with carbonite and laughed as he panicked and defused. Then he went and knocked out Goten and Trunks with one punch each.
    • Then he goes and gets this inflicted upon him, courtesy of XXI. Buu first takes the pragmatic approach to strike first and go for the kill, but XXI had set things so that Babidi's sealing formula would activate, thus costing him the fight.
    • Then he goes and proceeds to pull this on everyone in the tournament again when it is revealed he and the Grand Supreme Kai are in cahoots, just to prove a point.
  • Detachment Combat: Buu uses this to devastating effect against Vegetto and his kids. Bra and Vegetto both have a technique that can destroy him down to the barest molecule, so he just creates thousands upon thousands of little Buu heads, who then split off into thousands more. They might as well be trying to kill a virus.
  • Deus ex Machina: He essentially fills this role for the Majin Rebellion. Once all the fighting stops, all he needs to do is perform one Badass Fingersnap and the entire stadium is completely repaired and everyone who died during the fights are revived (with the possible exception of Babidi). He also seems completely aware of this, since he refuses to interfere in what is happening, even though he could have brought everyone back whenever he wanted to (except for when he killed Babidi once he was alone in space).
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Getting sealed by Gast's magic. Judging by how he targets him the first and thoroughly eliminates him the next time he pulls something, it seems while he plotted with the Grand Supreme Kai, he really did NOT see that coming.
    • XXI using Babidi's sealing formula on him, even though it didn't stick.
    • When the Vargas DO find a way to send him back thanks to a Crazy-Prepared automated failsafe. He is properly flabbergasted, and never expected two things: in his hubris he never even envisioned that the Vargas could actually find a way to get rid of him, and he never bothered to read their thoughts to figure out he needs someone from U1 to operate the machinery he copied from them down to its atoms.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Becomes U18 Uub's teacher in magic during the fourth round. Besides an occasional prank or smug remark about how weak his student is, he is very encouraging and friendly, and has no motivation for teaching beyond his student's benefit. His immense magical power also allows him to use a lot of unusual teaching methods, such as summoning Playboy Bunny cheerleaders.
  • Evil Genius: If Buu didn't count as one before (see his entry on the canon page for details), he certainly became one after absorbing Bulma.
  • Exact Words: Chaotic and unpredictable though he may be, one consistent trait that can be witnessed is that he relies a lot on these as part of his whole Genie shtick, generally with the ultimate goal of providing himself entertainment and interesting results.
    • For instance, when he gives a False Reassurance that Babidi will not die of asphyxia. He will not die... Of asphyxia.
  • Expy: Of Meruem from Hunter × Hunter. Both Buu and the Chimera Ant King started out as murderous sociopaths who cared nothing for those they deemed lesser than them. Over time, however, they both began to become deeply introspective, trying to figure out how and why they should live and act before eventually settling on their own code of morality.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Relatively speaking at least. Zen Buu has magic more powerful than even the dragon balls, but he mostly doesn't bother using it. This trope is at its most noticeable during the fight against Gotenks where he doesn't even use his own powers for most of it and just uses the Heliorian armor he got, and in other tournament fights he only uses basic attacks. This gets downplayed in non-tournament matches since he divides himself and overwhelms everybody, but he still refuses to use his magic aside from killing Gast (Who can just seal him).
  • From a Single Cell: Just like his other incarnations, unless you've got a move that can destroy every atom of his physical form, he's just going to come back for more. Combine this with an ability to divide himself seemingly infinitely and teleport any of those pieces anywhere instantly, and you have possibly the single most difficult being to kill in the multiverse.
  • Genius Bruiser: Oh yeah. He's easily on par with Vegito in Super Saiyan 2 in terms of raw power, and he's got Bulma's genius and an insane amount of knowledge, ranging from technological to strategic.
  • Graceful Loser: At times he shows himself to be this.
    • After getting Broly stolen from him, and upon coming back to the stadium, he looks so pissed he will start another scene right here and then, but then he calms down, and merely congratulates them on the fun fight. Combines this with Dissonant Serenity, and lampshades his evolution since the Buu arc.
    • When losing against XII, and getting himself sealed, he was not exactly happy, but none the worse for wear, just offhandedly noting that oh well, too bad, he lost that fight, while pointing as a matter of fact that OF COURSE he would have found a way to deal with his own weak point.
    • When getting himself sent back to U4, he is visibly taken aback, but if anything he sounds admirative at how he got played.
  • Healing Hands:
    • Or rather healing tentacle. He is easily able to reattach Uub's arm after it got severed twice by the tech warriors.
    • He can outright push a metaphorical Reset Button on the Majin Rebellion.
  • The Heavy: While who the Big Bad is is still up in the air, Zen Buu is the antagonist running around causing most of the trouble so far.
  • Hidden Depths: This powerful fighter is revealed to also be a fantastic musician. Among other things, given he wants to absorb as much knowledge as he can, upon realizing how lacking he was as a being, comparing himself to his Ax-Crazy Kid Buu self. The novel focusing on Universe 4 describes his inner turmoil and desire to evolve beyond the psychotic being he was, showing himself capable of a level of introspection and emotion that no one who remembers Super Buu would think him truly capable of.
  • I Need You Stronger: In order to make the tournament more interesting for him, a Buu head sneaks off while the rest of him fakes being captured in order to grant extensive knowledge to several fighters he deems worthy enough while they sleep. At least until he takes a wrong turn into XXI's room and is vaporized by him.
  • Invincible Villain: He has never been beaten or even had the slightest bit of difficulty in any of the many battles he has engaged in. The one possible exception to this was getting shut down by Gast, but as revealed later, that too was part of his plan and he's apparently feigning weakness. Then, his fight against XXI. Sure, he found a way around the sealing formula, but it still technically cost him the fight.
  • It Amused Me: The reason behind each and every action he does nowadays. He seeks entertainment of any form, especially in Trolling, and of course fighting. Sometimes he gets legitimate amusement from doing the right thing, and for bonus points from the amazement and bewilderment of everyone suspecting him of ulterior motives.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: A downplayed trope, considering that he's still prone to going Ax-Crazy every once in a while and can still be extremely amoral, but nowadays can also perform great acts of altruism and compassion if the mood takes him, along with taking the Z-Fighters' place as the protector of Universe 4.
  • Just Toying with Them: Buu has yet to take an opponent seriously; even when he fought Vegito and his kids when they tried to keep him from absorbing Broly (which they do), it turns out he was just testing to see how they fared. He did take XXI seriously and went for the kill, though, but didn't expect him to use the sealing formula.
  • Man of Wealth and Taste: Lives in wondrous palaces and enjoys fine arts.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He had everyone dancing to his tune throughout the first part of the tournament.
  • Master of All: If Buu encountered someone that had a special talent or ability he liked, he assimilated them and took it for himself. So far, he's kept whatever cards he has tucked neatly up his metaphorical sleeves, so we can only guess.
  • Morality Pet:
    • Uub seems to be this to him, given he often interacts with him as if being on friendly terms, and doesn't really demand anything in exchange for fixing his arm both times he loses it. He goes so far as to teach Uub magic when he asks, wanting nothing in return and being very supportive and positive. He even refers to himself as Uub's "older brother".
    • Videl seems to be this to him, as he teleports her back home instead of blasting her to smithereens like he does anyone else whose wish he rejects. In fact, all of the Z Fighters seem to be this, as he interacts with Gotenks as anyone would with their favorite playmate.
  • Near-Villain Victory: While Buu managed to defeat the Z Fighters, his decision to absorb rather than kill them resulted in a drastic shift in his personality. Now, he no longer wants to destroy everything like he did before. So technically, the Z Fighters won in the end, though at great cost.
  • Not Me This Time: When the non-evil members of the Tournament (and him) were teleported away from the main grounds by Babidi, one member of the U19 team accuses him of teleporting them away. His response is that he's a victim like them.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Heavily implied. Vegito was the only one who ever defeated him. Seeing another version of him in the tournament who has also trained and mastered his skills, Zen Buu is very eager to fight him. When Vegito loses via a ringout that no one saw coming, Zen Buu starts acting crazy, and tries to hijack the tournament. He acts like a little kid with his candy being taken away.
  • Pet the Dog: Sparing the Earth, granting wishes to anyone he deems deserving, sparing Videl despite her annoying him, Mercy Killing Hirudegarn, granting power boosts left and right, and so on and so forth.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Downplayed. Despite his utterly psychopathic behavior before Goku and his companions got absorbed, the effect it has on him mellows him out greatly.
  • Reality Warper: He boasts to be omnipotent in his universe and is certainly close. Turning unbelievably powerful divine beings to stone? Granting wishes that even Shenron could not? Granting powers? Resurrecting the dead? An afterthought for him.
  • Removed Achilles' Heel: When it comes to Babidi's sealing spell. While it does seal him and all of his pieces in one place for at least a minute, he was able to modify his cocoon enough to automatically release him no worse for wear, besides making him lose his fight.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: Accidentally becomes one of these when he pits U18 Uub against a stronger, faster, and smarter opponent without any sort of built-in failsafe... then gets blipped back to his own universe, meaning he can't rescue his student if things go poorly.
  • Storybreaker Power: With all the traits listed in the next entry, it's abundantly clear Buu can handle or fix just about any problem the rest of the characters could ever encounter. From a storytelling perspective it makes perfect sense, then, that he gets sent back to his own universe during the fourth round, presumably to make sure he can't intervene on the heroes' behalf later on.
  • Superpower Lottery: Zen Buu won perhaps the biggest superpower jackpot in all universes. Observe:
    • The most powerful Healing Factor out of anyone in the tournament. Zen Buu is capable of regenerating from injuries that would one-shot anyone else. Getting sliced into pieces? Not even an inconvenience. Being blown up by ki blasts? He'll be back in a few seconds, and to inconvenience him even by a slight bit you need a specific ki blast that can disintegrate him down to his atoms. Getting disintegrated by the aforementioned technique? Good luck trying to find EVERY single little part of him. Punched with enough force to shatter continents? Totally wasted effort.
    • Complete control over his own body (he can stretch to extreme lengths, liquefy himself, all that jazz).
    • Super-Strength, Super-Toughness, Super-Speed, and Ki Manipulation that can only be matched by the likes of Vegito and maybe a couple others. (Emphasis on the match part; so far, no one's actually shown surpassing him in any field.)
    • Magic powers that surpass the Dragon Balls in terms of potency. To put that into perspective, the Dragon Balls could do things like revive the dead (in some cases, whole populations), grant immortality, transport people across the universe and create planets; Buu's magic is stronger than that! The guy is basically a top-tier Reality Warper.
    • Can absorb anyone or anything and take the powers they hold for himself, so there's no telling just what else he's got hidden away.
  • Sweet Tooth: His appetite for candy and other sugary foods is still very much present.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Canon Super Buu was a complete psychopath and sadist, who only seemed to become crueler with each absorption. With Goku absorbed, he's still pretty amoral but he's a pretty affable fellow who tries to make fights fun and interesting, and likes to entertain others.
  • Trickster Mentor:
    • He taught tricks to a few of the other contestants, such as U18 Goten & Trunks, in their dreams to make their their fight more exciting.
    • Although he knew U11 Babidi would try to usurp the tournament after all the U11 contestants were defeated, Zen Buu decided not to stop him and quietly helped to keep the chaos going, but stopped short of allowing U11 Babidi to actually win. During the chaos, U16 Bra fell under Babidi's control and gleefully went on a killing spree, but she had a Heel Realization after she was confronted by U18 Bra. As a result, a repentant, humbled U16 Bra gave up her desire to be the strongest and instead focused on becoming a kinder, wiser person instead. Without anyone realizing it, Zen Buu taught U16 Bra the lesson everyone else in her universe failed to teach her - everything has consequences. Better still, Zen Buu fixed everything and resurrected everyone in the tournament. One has to wonder if the U4 Dragon Ball family really is still alive within Zen Buu.
  • Troll: His fight with Gotenks could be best described as one big trolling session. Same with Tenshinhan.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When Vegito was eliminated by XXI, he was not happy...
  • Villainous Rescue: During the Vegetto vs Broly match, he casually mentions that he may have to step in and kill Broly if Vegito loses and Broly subsequently goes on a rampage. Vegito pulls through at the last second though, so his intervention is never required.
  • Worthy Opponent: Sees Vegito as this, as he got angry when he was eliminated. Vegito sees him as this in return; he considers challenging Buu to a fight outside of the tournament and wonders if Buu would agree.
  • Wild Card: Zen Buu does things according to his mood; sometimes he'll do something good, other times not so much. In essence, he does what he wants at any given time depending on his whims, and doesn't really care if it's good or evil.
