    Abigail

Wendy: "That's my twin sister, Abigail."

Abigail Lillian Carter is Wendy's deceased twin sister, who appears as a ghost.


  • Affectionate Nickname: Wendy sometimes calls her "Abby".
  • Big Sister Instinct: She's not literally Wendy's big sister, at least not by any more than a few minutes (they're twins) but she'll protect her from enemies.
  • Cheerful Child: She was the dominant twin who used to drag the more passive Wendy around during her adventures.
  • Childish Tooth Gap: As shown in Wish You Were Here, Abigail had a small gap between her two front teeth.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: According to the developers Abigail is jealous of Chester as she constantly tried to kill him in the past due to a (now fixed) bug. It is possible that her jealousy extends to the cute passive critters like Rabbits and Moleworms too as Abigail often kills them without any player input.
  • Cute Ghost Girl: Though she has more of a Bedsheet Ghost appearance, she qualifies.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Her death turned her twin sister from a happy little girl to a perpetually depressed and creepy one.
  • Enemy to All Living Things: Except Wendy. She'll even fight creatures that Wendy hasn't asked her to attack, and it doesn't matter if they're defenseless or not.
  • Genki Girl: She was one when she was alive and she still retains some shades of it as a ghost.
  • Happy Flashback: We get to see her when she was alive during a flashback in Wendy's origin cinematic.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: When she was alive she could be distinguished from Wendy for a gap in her teeth, her wearing her hair loose and her sporting a less feminine outfit in general.
  • The Speechless: She can't talk. Confirmed when Wickerbottom tries to communicate.
  • Summon Magic: Wendy summons her using Abigail's Flower.
  • The Reveal: An official image released from Klei reveals her full name to be Abigail Lillian Carter, confirming her being related to Maxwell.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: She's a featureless Bedsheet Ghost, but you can still tell she's a girl from her eyelashes and flower accessory.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: With Wendy, when she was still alive. Abigail wearing overalls and enjoying climbing rocks for fun as opposed to her skirt-wearing, book reading twin, Wendy.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite her more ready for roughing clothing and love of activity, she doesn't seem opposed to getting flowers in her hair in life. And wearing one on her head is her defining feature as a ghost.
  • The Unsolved Mystery: How she died. The developers say that it was under mysterious circumstances. Wendy's cinematic implies that she died from falling off a cliff near the Carters' home, but we don't see how it actually happened.
  • Weakened by the Light: She's weakest when the sun's out and most powerful in complete darkness.

    Bernie

Willow: "My childhood buddy, Bernie."

One of Willow's exclusive items, and her teddy bear. Only found in-game with Don't Starve Together. Holding him provides warm and comfort for Willow, and when she becomes insane, he will becomes alive and fight the shadows creatures for her.


  • Ascended Extra: Went from a prop used in Willow's artwork to an exclusive item in Don't Starve Together, as well as an important part of her backstory.
  • Draw Aggro: He can distract the Shadow Creatures for the insane characters. But if the insane character in question is Willow he will Hulk Out and start to attack back every potential threat to her life.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Ashley the cat, one of his alternative skins.
  • Hulking Out: Bernie can grow in size and attack back the enemies if Willow is close enough and insane, and he will not stop attacking until he dies or all his enemies are dead.
  • Killer Teddy Bear: Averted. Instead of murdering the humans he acts as a bait for the Shadows. Played straight when he Hulks Out. He remains harmless to the other survivors, even in a world with PvP enabled, but a few other characters find him unsettling or intimidating in this form anyhow.
  • Punny Name: Bernie sounds like "burny". And Willow loves burny things!

    Jimmy the Bio Scanalyzer

WX-78: "HIS NAME IS JIMMY"

A flying scanner WX-78 uses to scan living creatures to create new circuits for themselves from their Bio Data. It is introduced in Don't Starve Together as part of WX-78's character update.


  • Clockwork Creature: It is a robot scanner, but everyone acts like it is WX-78's pet. The fact that it has a name probably helps.
  • Do Androids Dream?: Wilson wonders if Jimmy dreams when it is inactive.
  • Glowing Mechanical Eyes: Its only eye glows when it is performing a scanning or when it is emitting Bio Data.
  • Hover Bot: It has a small propeller that makes it fly.
  • Keet: The other survivors notice that it looks happy and proud of its good job every time it successfully completes a scan.
  • Names Given to Computers: Jimmy. It comes from its designation code J1-M1.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Downplayed. The other characters treat Jimmy like it was always there, but it actually did not exist until WX-78's character update in Don't Starve Together.
  • Robot Buddy: To WX-78. Due to its mechanical nature, they are particularly soft with it.
  • Single-Task Robot: Its only job is to collect Bio Data for WX-78. The other survivor can try to read them too, with the most science-oriented people being able to understand what they mean and the others being bored or confused by them.
  • Spy Bot: Its job is to analyze the creatures who inhabit the Constant to collect Bio Data for WX-78 to create new Circuits to enhance themselves.

    Lucy the Axe

Woodie: "I love Lucy!"

Woodie's talking axe. She helps him chop wood more easily than anyone else. Lucy has infinite durability but is weaker than a regular axe in combat, so is best used solely for cutting down trees. She will also inform Woodie whenever his curse is about to take over.


  • Ax-Crazy: She loves to cut trees into pieces and she encourages Woodie to chop more trees. Bonus points for her being an actual axe. However, she'll restrain herself to warn Woody if she starts to notice that Woodie's curse is about to take over when he chops down too many trees.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: In Don't Starve Together, if Woodie picks up another Woodie player's Lucy while he has his own copy of Lucy in his inventory, both Lucys would start acting like jealous housewives for Woodie's attention.
    Lucy: (at the other Lucy) You can't have him! He's mine!
  • Clingy MacGuffin: In Don't Starve Together, if Woodie loses Lucy, then he can craft a regular axe which will turn into Lucy once he starts chopping trees.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Lucy has infinite durability but she deals less damage than a normal axe and even less damage compared to other tools when used as emergency weapons, making Lucy ill-suited for anything else other than her tree chopping specialty.
  • The Dreaded: Lucy invokes this reaction when examined by Wormwood and, for some reason, WX-78.

    WX-78: GET IT AWAY!
  • Empathic Weapon: Lucy genuinely cares for Woodie. She urges him to cut down trees but gets worried when he starts converting into his Werebeaver form.
  • Guilt-Based Gaming: Leaving Lucy behind will result in some sad dialogue from her part from apologizing for whatever she could have said to Please, Don't Leave Me.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: In Don't Starve Together, Lucy cannot be used by any other characters, since she'll just slide out of their grip and complain about them not being Woodie. In the Forge, any character can wield Lucy if traded with Woodie, but Lucy will only teleport back to Woodie if thrown.
  • Talking Weapon: It's unclear if Lucy can actually talk or if Woodie's just Hearing Voices. Together suggests it to be the former; she will wriggle out of other character's grasps and had lines yelling at them to release her. Woodie's biography reveals that Lucy doesn't talk when the other survivors are around, even though they were informed about her being sentient. Because of that they are unsure if Lucy being able to talk is just Woodie's imagination, even though some of them might have heard her talk to Woodie when they were close enough not to be noticed.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: In the Forge, Lucy can be thrown at enemies, gaining their attention. Lucy will also teleport back to the thrower, but only if thrown by Woodie.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In The Forge, Lucy becomes Riled Lucy. Unlike in the base game Riled Lucy is a valid weapon here in her own right, making Woodie forgo the need to get other weapons. Woodie notes the change in Lucy as well.
  • Unbreakable Weapons: Unlike most other tools and weapons in the game, Lucy has infinite durability. She can only be destroyed if used to attack the Nightmare Throne.

    Woby

Walter: "Good girl, Woby"

Woby is a weird dog that Walter befriended shortly after being banished into the Constant, and she acts as his companion ever since. She has two forms: a small one who acts as a portable inventory, and a big one who can still act as an inventory and also as a mount.


  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Walter fed her when she was starving, and in change Woby saved his life when she realized that he was not prepared to face a Deerclops. They are inseparable ever since.
  • Canine Companion: To Walter, even though he is not her original owner.
  • Canis Major: Her big form is so big that she can be used as a mount. But this doesn't make her less friendly.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: She is friendly with all the survivors but Maxwell. In the Swine & Dine cinematic, she barks to warn Walter that he's about to eat a stew of bat wings and Monster Meat that would likely do him harm.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Her name is likely derived from Toby, which is a guys' name.
  • Letter Motif: She is the only ally to date whose name starts with a "W" like the survivors'. But considering the circumstances of her first meet with Walter and her relationship with Maxwell there is a good chance that she was a regular dog who got banished into the Constant on her own right a long time ago.
  • Lovable Coward: She hates monsters and she will start running around scared when Walter is fighting. Walter can still ride her big form in combat, for as long as he doesn't get hit.
  • Powerup Food: Monster Meat. It is the only food she can eat in game, in spite of the fact that Walter can be seen feed her normal jerky in their introductive cinematic and in their official portrait. Wickerbottom comments that it is a substance contained in the Monster Meat that causes her to mutate into a giant dog with horns.
  • Power-Up Mount: Her big form is this for Walter. She won't lose loyalty to him like a beefalo would do, but she will slow down when she starts to starve.
  • Precious Puppy: All the survivors comment about how fluffy and friendly she is, no matter her size. Except for Maxwell and WX-78, who complain about her drool.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Her small form, though she can still be employed as a portable inventory.

Portable Storages

    Chester

Maxwell: "Annoying little monster. Has his uses, though."

A dog-like creature that the player can use as a container. He obeys to anyone holding the eye bone in their inventory. It can be found anywhere around the world.


  • All Animals Are Dogs: Acts very doglike.
  • An Ice Person: If Chester contains a Blue Gem in each inventory slot during a full moon, he will become Snow Chester. In addition to his normal abilities, he can act as a mobile refrigerator and preserve perishable items.
  • Bigger on the Inside: The only way to explain how he holds everything.
  • Chest Monster: A benevolent example.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The player can transform him into Shadow Chester by putting a Nightmare Fuel in each of his inventory slots on a full moon, giving him three more slots and turning his fur black. However, he'll still be just as helpful to the player as ever.
  • Lunacy: If the player puts a Blue Gem or a Nightmare Fuel in all 9 of his inventory slots, during a full moon he'll transform into Snow Chester or Shadow Chester respectively and gain special abilities depending on his form.
  • Precious Puppy: He's very doglike and very cute, with several characters commenting on how adorable and fuzzy he is.
  • Preppy Name: His full name, at least according to Wilson, is Otto von Chesterfield, Esquire.
  • Punny Name: Chester.
  • Series Mascot: Seems to be evolving into this as he's highly popular with the fandom. Klei even made a plush version of him.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: If he's carrying Nightmare Fuel in each inventory slot on a full moon, he turns into Shadow Chester and gains three more inventory slots.
  • The Von Trope Family: His full name is Otto von Chesterfield.

    Hutch

Winona: "You wanna be my toolbox, lil' guy ?"

A storage creature similar to Chester exclusive to the Caves of Don't Starve Together. He can also produces light when filled with glow berries.


  • Animal Gender-Bender: Hutch resembles an anglerfish, but only female anglerfish have the dangling light and the characters refer to him as male. Either it's this trope, or the characters can't tell.
  • Bilingual Bonus: One of his forms is Fugu Hutch, which damages anything that attacks him. Fugu is Japanese for pufferfish.
  • Chest Monster: Similar to Chester, he's a benevolent example useful as a walking storage device.
  • Infinite Flashlight: If you store a Light Bulb inside of him, Hutch will have an anglerfish-like, glowing antenna that can be used as a light source.
  • Punny Name: His name is Hutch and he follows whoever carries around a goldfish in a bowl named Star-Sky.
    • Enforced also by Hutch's full name: Hutch Danglefish, P.I. (it stands for "Portable Inventory").
  • Sanity Meter: If you store a One-Man Band inside him, he temporarily becomes Music Box Hutch and provides a Sanity Aura.
  • Spike Balls of Doom: If you store a Spear or Battle Spear inside him, he will become Fugu Hutch and form spikes that cause damage to anything that attacks him.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Chester cannot be brought into the Caves but the player can replace him with Hutch.
  • Transformation Trinket: Differing from Chester and Packim Baggims, Hutch's transformations are temporary. They will last until one of the items necessary to keep up the transformation gets removed from the inventory or its durability runs out.

    Packim Baggims

Wilson: "I bet I could pack'im full of stuff."

A bird-like storage creature similar to Chester who replaces him in Shipwrecked. He is able to fly which means he can follow the player without problem when traveling the sea. He will appear once the fishbone is acquired, it is found anywhere on any island.


  • Big Eater: He will consume any fish that you place inside him.
  • Cyclops: Only has one eye.
  • Pelican Package Pouch: Serves as one.
  • Playing with Fire: Transforms into Fire Packim Baggims if you put an Obsidian in each slot, which grants him fire powers, cooks any food stored inside him, and turns all flammable items to Ash.
  • Power-Up Food: If you feed him enough fish, he becomes Fat Packim Baggims and gains three additional slots.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Is the Shipwrecked substitute for Chester.
  • Took a Level in Badass: If he transforms into Fire Packim Baggims, he gains the ability to attack monsters and other hostile mobs. Unfortunately, this also includes Webber.

    Ro Bin

Wheeler: "Not a flyer, but it has a lot of cargo space."

Another flying bird that acts as the storage creature in Hamlet. It is a hatchling of the BFB and its egg can be taken from the BFB's nest and hatched by the player. It cannot be upgraded unlike his other counterparts.


  • Egg MacGuffin: Its egg can be found in the BFB's nest, allowing the player to incubate it to hatch it.
  • Punny Name: His name is a play on "Robin" and "Bin".
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Like Packim Baggins before him, he serves as a bird version of Chester in Hamlet worlds.

    Beefalo

Warly: "Here's the beef."

Bovine-like creatures that appear in herds. They are usually passive, unless attacked or approached during their mating season. Survivors can domesticate Beefalo by feeding them, allowing sufficiently domesticated Beefalo to be ridden on as mounts and kept as pets in their base.


  • All Animals Are Dogs: Though they're bovines, they'll do some odd dog-like behaviors when befriended like running up to their owners to beg for food while panting and wagging their tails.
  • And Your Reward Is Clothes: You can craft a grooming station, which lets you dress Beefalo up purely for cosmetic benefit.
  • Beauty Contest: The Year of the Beefalo gave Beefalo Pageants, letting players dress them up in ridiculous costumes for various rewards.
  • Big Eater: Has a large Hunger meter of 350 points and it drains very quickly. Domesticating a Beefalo requires a lot of investment in resources so players are advised not to do it until they have a proper base set up.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Taming a Beefalo is a lengthy and involved process. You have to keep it constantly fed to keep its obedience up in order to ride it, which passively raises its domestication until it becomes fully tamed. It can take multiple seasons of getting bucked off while stuffing your steeds face for it to reach a state, but the process is well worth the effort for a fast mode of transportation that greatly cuts down travel time while giving a safe option for weaker characters to battle enemies with.
  • Empathy Pet: In Don't Starve Together, using emote commands will also make them emote accordingly with their riders. They'll even dance and sing along with the proper commands.
  • G-Rated Sex: During mating season they act aggressive and will periodically bellow and rear up on their hind legs, but Baby Beefalo only appear when the player isn't looking. Hell, there don't even need to be other Beefalo! A single Beefalo can spawn a whole herd if left alone.
  • Guide Dang It!: Domesticating Beefalo is an uphill process but trying to domesticate a certain temperament of Beefalo requires a lot of trial and error without a guide as the game will never tell you how or why a Beefalo is reacting to things.
  • Horse of a Different Color: They're cow-like creatures that you can tame to ride around as horses.
  • Hyperactive Metabolism: They can be healed with food like the player, but it's 4 times as effective on them as it is on the player.
  • Leitmotif: The Beefalo Song.
  • Love It or Hate It: Some characters think they are endearing, while others think they are just revolting, smelly beasts.
    Walani: I love these things!
    Wurt: Big fuzzy!
    Wheeler: Aww! So cute and smelly!
    Willow: What a disgusting, hairy beast!
    Maxwell: They're even uglier as children.
  • Mascot Mook: Became as such in more recent updates, getting more focus on promotional material for the game, and even having merchandise after them.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: There are three possible outcomes for a fully tamed Beefalo.note  An ornery Beefalo deals damage equal to a Tentacle Spike without the caveat of durability (which can be further boosted by a War Saddle), while a Rider Beefalo trades damage for being faster than the average Beefalo, greatly cutting down travel time. A Pudgy Beefalo... provides a positive sanity aura. It's not helped as well by the more dificult requirements to get a Pudgy Beefalo compared to the other two types.note 
  • Power-Up Mount: They can be ridden on with a saddle once domesticated.
  • Power-Up Letdown: Pudgy Beefalo do significantly less damage and move slower than normal Beefalo in exchange for... a positive sanity aura. By the time players are able to domesticate it into a Pudgy Beefalo, they most likely already have access to other sanity restoring things such as Taffy or Glommer. And if taken to the Lunar Isles, the positive sanity aura is actually a bad thing, due to the Enlightenment mechanic. Rider Beefalo also do less damage (though still more damage than Pudgy) in exchange for being faster than regular Beefalo.
  • Toilet Humor: Beefalo are usually associated with producing manure both by the developers and in-game. Also, feeding Beefalo enough times might cause it to fart.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Beefalo are normally passive creatures but become extremely aggressive during their mating season and will attack every non-Beefalo thing that goes near them. From landing birds, to passing butterflies, nothing is safe from a Beefalo in heat, except if a player is wearing a Beefalo hat.
  • Traumatic Haircut: You can shave the wool off of Beefalo when they're asleep. When they wake up, they'll be the most miserable looking hairless thing you'll ever see. Note that players shouldn't shave the wool off of a Beefalo they're domesticating because doing so will cause it to very rapidly lose domestication points until its wool grows back.
  • Video Game Caring Potential: Later updates allows players to domesticate Beefalo, brush them, and even give them names.
  • Video Game Cruelty Potential: You can feed Beefalo any vegetable, which includes poisonous raw Red Caps. If you feed them such, not only will they take damage, they'll visibly get sick and wince in pain after eating it. Or the Syrup of Ipecaca Wormwood can unlock, which causes them to lose health and run around panicking and repeatedly pooping for 45 seconds.

    Pigs

Wheeler: "I hope he doesn't ask me my views on bacon."

Weird, humanoid pigs found randomly in small wooden Pig Houses. They will only attack the player if he attack them first. They can also be befriended by the player if given meat, and act as followers, helping the player do things from fighting enemies, to more mundane tasks such as chopping down trees and mining rocks. They share common enemies with the player and so can provide help. Each pig has his own name.


  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Once the player offers them good food (meat), they decide to stick around and help the player out.
  • Big Eater: Always hungry. It's the reason they join you in the first place. They will also eat any food left unattended on the floor, including rot. Werepigs even more so; eating food is the only thing they prioritise over attacking anything that comes near them.
  • Bigger on the Inside: Their pig houses are small, thin structures that look like they should barely be able to fit the pigs inside them, but the Swine and Dine animation shows they're surprisingly spacious and well furnished on the inside.
  • Big Ol' Unibrow: All of them have this, probably to make them seem stupider.
  • Fantastic Racism: They will automatically attack Webber and Wortox due to them being considered monsters, and Wurt due to the rivalry between pigs and merms.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: They can't wield any weapons, but their punch is quite powerful.
  • Helpful Mook: They're stand-offish at first, but feeding them meat allows you to recruit them to help you fight enemies or chop down trees.
  • Ironic Name: Names that they can be given include Ham, Bacon, and Wilbur.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Their combat strategy is this. Though on larger enemies they utilize hit and run tactics similar to the player, they still aren't very good at dodging.
  • No Indoor Voice: They speak in ALL CAPS.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: The "werepig" transformation is really just a hairier version of their normal appearance. They transform on either full moons or upon eating too much Monster Meat, and are hostile to everything including befriended players. They revert after some time has passed.
  • Pig Man: Bipedal, semi-intelligent swine.
  • Potty Failure: Fruit and veggies go right through them. This can actually be exploited by the player, as their poop can be used as manure to fertilise farms.
  • Sanity Meter: Befriended pigs provide sanity to the player. This effect is doubled if the pig is given a garland.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: While they have practically no self-preservation skills, they pack quite a punch.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: They're all afraid of the dark. When the sun starts to set at dusk, they immediately run to their homes. If they don't have a home, or are forced to follow a player at dusk, they will start panicking and run around screaming until they find a light source and will cower near it until the next day comes.
  • You No Take Candle: Speak only three words at a time, in broken English.

    Pig King

Winona: "Those hooves've never seen a day of work."

The king of the Pigs in the Constant. He lives in a Pig Village and will trade with players gold nuggets in exchange for meat or trinkets.


  • Adipose Rex: The king of the Pigs and is the biggest and fattest of his subjects.
  • Fantastic Racism: He'll refuse to trade with Wurt, due to her being a Merm. Wurt has a mutual dislike for him as well. He doesn't share the other pigs' antagonism towards Webber or Wortox, but trading with him as either of the two monster characters can be difficult since the pigs that spawn from nearby pig houses will attack you on sight.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Eels, as unlike other meats, he'll give a whopping five gold nuggets instead of the usual one.
  • Uncle Pennybags: Comes across as such. He'll squeal in delight if you give a proper trade and there's no limit to how much gold nuggets he's willing to give to you. As long as you have enough meat and trinkets, you can have as much gold as you want from him.

    Bunnymen

Willow: "Ugh. They look SO stupid."

Creatures that only live in Rabbit Hutches in Caves. Acting has the underground counterpart of Pigs. Similar to them, they are neutral and can be befriended, although they are more picky and only accept carrots. Carrying meats will instantly make them hostile. They will transform into Beardlords when the player becomes insane similar to rabbits becoming beardlings. They have all their own name.


  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Will befriend the player if given a carrot
  • Berserk Button: Will attack the player for having any meat items.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Bunnymen will turn into Beardlords when the player's Sanity is low. They will still work with the player and attack monsters.
  • Fantastic Racism: Like Pigs, they will attack Webber and Wortox on sight. They're neutral towards Wurt, though.
  • Foil: Can be seen as ones for the pigs. Unlike pigs, they will not eat meat and are only awake during the night.
  • Hair-Raising Hare: The Beardlords. They take on a darker appearance, snarl intimidatingly, attack significantly faster and hit harder than normal Bunnymen, and have an insanity aura. Downplayed however because they're still befriendable in this state.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: They will run away if their health is low.
  • Loophole Abuse: Won't care about meat items kept in Chester, Hutch, Packim Baggims, Ro Bin or Woby's inventories.
  • Stock Animal Diet: They're befriendable by giving them carrots, and they'll drop some carrots as well if they're killed.
  • Straw Vegetarian: They really hate meat eaters, and will attack and try to kill any player carrying them (Ham Bats don't count, since they're weapons).
  • Terse Talker: They speak only one word at a time.

    Rock Lobster

Wolfgang: "He is mighty! Like me!"

Powerful creatures that live in the Caves and roam in herds. They can be befriended by giving them rocks to eat.


  • Boss in Mook's Clothing: They have HP comparable to some bosses in the game, with an ability that lets them tank damage and regenerate health rapidly along with hitting like a truck. A small herd of these can easily take out other bosses with little effort.
  • Explosive Breeder: They breed pretty rapidly, and prior to an update, could have herds that multiplied into massive proportions if left unchecked.
  • Gentle Giant: Full-grown Rock Lobsters are very large and imposing but they are otherwise passive to players unless provoked and can be befriended as well.
  • Mighty Glacier: They pack a wallop and are extremely durable but are otherwise slow moving.
  • Noodle Incident: Maxwell says that he banished Rock Lobsters into the caves "for a reason", though never elaborates on why.
  • Shout-Out: To the B-52's song of the same name. The patch that added them to the game was titled "It's Not a Rock!"
  • Visual Pun: They're lobsters that are literally made of rock.

    Catcoon

A creature that lives in a Hollow Stump. Can be befriended with food or toys, and will vomit out items for the player in response.


  • Cats Have Nine Lives: Its Hollow Stump starts off with nine "lives". Missing lives regenerate slowly as long as there's at least one left, but once the last one is gone, this Catcoon is dead for good, though in Don't Starve Together, a dead stump will regenerate after several days.
  • Hairball Humor: How they'll give gifts to players involves them hacking it up like a hairball. Their "gifts" can range from minerals, tumbleweeds, or even live animals.
  • Mix-and-Match Creatures: A cat and a raccoon.
  • Permadeath: A Catcoon that runs out of its lives will stop spawning entirely. Averted in Don't Starve Together where an abandoned Hollow Stump will eventually house a new Catcoon if its previous owner ran out of lives.
  • Permanently Missable Content: It's possible for every Catcoon in a game world to die for good. In fact, due in part to their Suicidal Overconfidence tendencies, it's possible for this to happen before the player ever finds them. If this happens, the Cat Tail and Cat Cap are forever unavailable in that world. Averted in Don't Starve Together, which allows depleted Hollow Stumps to eventually regenerate.
  • Suicidal Overconfidence: They'll attack entire beehives, spider dens, and flocks of Pengulls on their own, which just results in them dying in retaliation and using up all their nine lives in the process if left unchecked.

    Glommer

Wilson: "It's cute. In a gross kind of way."

An insect-like creature that appears once in a full moon near his statue. It will follow the player when they carry his flower, providing Sanity and producing goop. It can also be killed for their precious ressources but doing so will instantly anger the Krampus.


  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Glommer is considered one of the most innocent creatures in the game, and their death at the hands of a player will instantly summon a Krampus.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: A rare benevolent example.
  • Cute Monster: It's designed to be this way. Glommer is a monster and will drop Monster Meat when killed, yet is completely harmless and likes to adorably start bouncing up and down when idle.
  • Extra Eyes: Being an insect, it has multiple eyes.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: A not weapon example. Glommer's Flower can be acquired only during a full moon night. It usually spawns near to a highly populated pig area, so there might be the chance that Glommer will die to a roaming Werepig before the end of the night (unless the player already took care of the problem). But once you got the flower Glommer will follow you to become one of the must useful companion in the game: he provides a sanity aura that denies the sanity drain of the night and he naturally produces Glommer's Goop, an item with a moltitude of uses. As its fuel value is among the highest in the game it can be used to light up the fire or to power an Ice Flingomatic during summer, it can be used to fertilize the farms, and it can also be eaten to restore some hunger and 40 HP. Sadly, despite this is the best not Crock Pot based healing item in the game, eating the Goop will also drain 50 sanity points. But in the Lunar Isles, Glommer's Goop becomes the best item in surviving there as you want to keep your sanity as low as possible in order to fight off enlightenment.
    • Or you can mine Glommer's Statue to obtain the Old Bell blueprint exclusive to Reign of Giants. The Old Bell summons the giant Bigfoot to stomp on your enemies, dealing the highest damage in game for a weapon. The downsides are that it can be used only thrice, that you can be hit too if you are not careful and that the items used to craft it can be obtained only by killing Glommer.
  • Not the Intended Use: Killing Glommer will cause Krampus to spawn; if Glommer dies and its flower is not on its statue it will grow back during a full moon night attracting a new Glommer; so in Don't Starve it's possible to pick up the flower during the full moon, kill Glommer, quit the game, enter the game again to find a sleeping Krampus, a new flower and a new Glommer so you can repeat the process until the end of the night in order to fight multiple Krampii to try and obtain a Krampus Sack. And the multiple drops will allow you to create multiple Old Bells too.
    • In Don't Starve Together, Wickerbottom's Lunar Grimoire can be used to force a full moon every night and an active Moonstorm event will cause one automatically, making it possible to kill Glommer for this purpose night after night after night.
  • Permanently Missable Content: Thankfully adverted: if Glommer dies a new flower and a new creature will spawn near to its statue (or its remains) during the next full moon.
  • Sanity Meter: Glommer provides a Sanity aura for the player.

    Wildbores

Woodlegs: "Not wild about ye."

The world of Shipwrecked has their own variation of Pigs, the Wildbores. Wildbores share many of the same traits pigs have, although they differ in some respects. They are somewhat more cantankerous than regular pigs, aggroing players (except Wilba) who encroach upon their personal space too many times.


  • Berserk Button: They really like their personal space, and entering it too many times will cause the Wildbore to attack you (unless your name is Wilba). Hammering or lighting their house on fire will also make them hostile.
  • Big Ol' Unibrow: Has a really fierce-looking unibrow.
  • Dash Attack: Once a Wildbore has aggroed a target it will rear up before charging to its targets position.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: They're slightly more aggressive to Pigs, as they may attack players that approach them too many times and some of their dialogue is more belligerent than that of a normal Pig's.
  • Underground Monkey: Essentially the Shipwrecked versions of Pigs.

    Bottlenose Ballphins

Dolphin-like creatures that live in the oceans of Shipwrecked, Ballphins can be befriended with all fish foods. They live in their own houses in the waters and like Bunnymen and Pigs, have their own randomly generated names.


  • Friendly, Playful Dolphin: They go up to players and like performing back flips for them. When befriended, they can prove to be very useful allies and friends. Unless you're playing as Webber.
  • Heroic Dolphin: If your boat sinks while a Bottlenose Ballphin is your follower, there's a chance that they will rescue you onto the nearest island with enough resources to craft a Log Raft, granting some insurance from perma-death.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: They're among the happiest and cutest mobs you'll encounter when out at sea in Shipwrecked.
  • Sapient Cetaceans: It can be presumed this way that they live in some sort of civilization. They live in elaborate coral palaces by the sea, each have their own names, and it's implied that their dialogue, which is just otherwise inarticulate eek-ing noises, could be their own language similar to the Mants' dialogue.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: They're terrified of lightning and lightning strikes will send them in a panic for a short period of time.

    Prime Apes

Warly: "You reek of mischief and other kinds of... reek."

Monkeys that are found in the jungles on the islands of Shipwrecked. Like their underground brethren, they like stealing stuff left on the ground. However, they can be befriended with Bananas, which lets players use them to harvest various items. They're of particular help to their king, Wilbur, whom they will help automatically.


  • Artistic License – Biology: They're called "Apes" in game, but they're otherwise clearly monkeys with their tail.
  • Dung Fu: Like Splumonkeys, they'll throw manure at their foes if angered.
  • Face–Heel Turn: If brought into the Ruins, they will also be affected by the Nightmare Cycle like Splumonkeys and will turn hostile during the nightmare phase.
  • Mischief-Making Monkey: Like Splumonkeys, they like stealing your stuff though you can convince them to cut it out and give all the stuff back if you give them a banana.
  • Shout-Out: You can distract them with an item called the Silly Monkey Ball, which is a reference to the Super Monkey Ball games.
  • Underground Monkey: Ironically, one to Splumonkeys, the latter are which only found underground.

    Yaarctopus

An octopus that lives by a coral reef. He'll give a share of his pirate booty or even some gear to help you survive in exchange for fish, seafood, or trinkets.


  • Expy: He serves as the Shipwrecked equivalent of the Pig King, having similar functions.
  • Funny Octopus: He's some type of pirate octopus and even has a peg leg and a hook hand on one of his tentacles.
  • Heavy Sleeper: After trading with him, he'll go to sleep for the rest of the day and can't be traded with until the next day.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: He's dressed in pirate gear but he doesn't do any pirating, instead just content with letting people have a share of his booty in exchange for seafood.

A talking basketball that's found randomly floating in the ocean. He restores sanity to players who have him equipped in their hand slot and can also be thrown to restore some additional sanity.


  • Canada Eh: It's a more subtle reference but a lot of his lines are reference to the Canadian Heritage Minute short about basketball. Rawling himself has a line lampshading it.
    Rawling: Is this some kind of Canadian joke?
  • Captain Ersatz: Meant to be a stand-in to the otherwise similarly named Wilson in the movie Cast Away.
  • Companion Cube: Comes across as such for the other characters, and usually some of their examination quotes just have them talking to him for comfort.

    Pig Traders

Wheeler: "Someone who appreciates the junk I find on my adventures."

The Pigs in the world of Hamlet have developed a society modeled after the Elizabethan Era. They have their own economy and act as traders for the player rather than followers to be befriended. They live in villages and are protected by Royal Guards who will attack the player if he threatens any traders. They usually go back to their houses at night.


  • City Guards: The Royal Guards. They patrol the Pig settlements and attack players who attack other Pig Traders, or who commit crimes in their witness.
  • Collector of the Strange: The Collector trader will pay Oincs for certain monster parts in addition to the various trinkets the player can find.
  • Ignorant About Fire: If the Royal Guards see an enemy during dusk or night, such as a pickpocket, the periodic waves of Vampire Bats, a player engaging in theft or vandalism, or any other hostile mob, they'll attack with their torches. Burning mobs will stop whatever they were doing and run around in a panic, which often spreads the fire to nearby plants, buildings, and the Royal Guards themselves.
  • Money Fetish: Both Royal Guards and ordinary Pig Traders will drop whatever they're doing to run up to any loose Oincs left on the ground to pick it up for themselves.
  • Mr. Fixit: The Workers will repair any damaged building.
  • Potty Failure: They will randomly poop on the streets, and will do so right away when eating fruits and vegetables left on the ground. Amusingly enough, they will pay the player when they pick up their poop.
  • Punny Name: The currency used to trade with the Pig Traders is called Oincs. It's a play on "oink" and an anagram of "coin".
  • Sweet Tooth: The Usher will pay the player for giving him sweet foods such as Honey.
  • The End Is Nigh: During the last few days until the Aporkalypse occurs, all their regular dialogue is replaced with shouting that the world is about to end. That's the player's cue to find the Aporkalypse Calendar as soon as possible before the inevitable occurs. They don't change their animations, only their dialogue, continuing to greet the player with cheerful salutes and stroll around town conducting their business while they shout about the end of the world.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Like their fellow pigs in the Constant, they're afraid of the dark. Interestingly, this doesn't apply to the Royal Guards who continue their patrol and just light up torches in response to darkness.
  • Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: They speak in a parody of Shakespearean English with the ALL CAPS of their cousins in the base game and Shipwrecked.

Small dogs that inhabit the wild plains of Hamlet worlds.


  • Bandit Mook: Downplayed. They'll rummage through containers and toss certain items out of them, but they'll only steal food.
  • Big Eater: Pogs are befriended by giving them any food, and they'll eat anything off the ground. They'll even raid storage containers while looking for food.
  • Face–Heel Turn: During the Aporkalypse, all Pogs will become aggressive to the player.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Resembles a combination of a Fennec Fox and a Chihuahua.
  • Mister Muffykins: Potentially. While they can be befriended with food and will fight for the player, they'll eat any edible drops and may steal food found in containers. And that's not even getting into the Aporkalypse...
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Their eyes turn red during the Aporkalypse, signaling their newfound hostility. They'll also gain these if they go into caves, regardless of whether they're hostile or not.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Just look at it, with its huge, shiny eyes and fluffy coat! Several characters comment on its cuteness when examining it.

Narwhal-like creatures found in the ocean. They're passive unless otherwise provoked, in which case they'll try to attack by drilling holes in the bottom of the boats of players. They can be befriended with meats.


  • Delinquent Hair: More like Delinquent Horns. Its horns are meant to look like mohawks.
  • Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: They're meant to look like a punk-rock type of monster, with horns that are styled like mohawks and even make electric guitar noises. However, they're otherwise pretty sedate and like nodding whenever they see players.
  • Horn Attack: If angered, they will try to pierce boats with their horn. The horns themselves can be chopped off without killing the Gnarwail.
  • Totally Radical: Its name is a portmanteau of narwhal and gnarly, and has some punk-rock themes to it.

    The Crabby Hermit

Wickerbottom "My, she is a bit rude, isn't she?"

A crabby hermit living on a little island away from the mainland. Her real name is Pearl and she's the centerpiece of a particular quest necessary for obtaining a certain item.


  • Grumpy Old Man: When arriving on her island for the first time, she will insult the player, complain whenever the player tries to help and say that she doesn't need them.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She starts off quite hostile towards the survivors when you first encounter her. Helping her out by fixing her house and doing some odd chores to improve the quality of her island home causes her to slowly become friendlier and friendlier, to the point of revealing her name.
  • Given Name Reveal: After helping her on her island enough times, she will ask the player to call her by her real name, Pearl.
  • Granny Classic: As the player helps her more, her quotes will become less hostile and turn soothe, similar to the ones of a caring grandmother, complimenting and thanking the player when helping her and even asking for their wellbeing when the player is at low hunger, health or sanity.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her bottle messages are all addressed to her lover, who has apparently disappeared on the hunt for a mysterious treasure. Said lover is the Crab King, who you must fight in order to obtain said treasure.
  • Message in a Bottle: These spawn all around the ocean as you sail. Reading the first one will always show you the location of her island home, with all others after either giving short snippets of the messages the hermit writes inside the bottles, and the locations of treasure chests.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Flower Salad. You'll gain a point of friendship by giving her one.
  • Video Game Caring Potential: Helping her out by fixing her home and cleaning up her island unlocks access to some particularly useful items you can trade for empty bottles, ranging from unique lures, to bait for attracting fish.

    Corvus Goodfeather

The host of the Midsummer's Cawnival, who provides the player with everything needed to set up the festivities.


  • Bird People: He's an anthrophomorphic crow.
  • Creepy Crows: Averted. He's an odd, but ultimately jovial and friendly fellow who just wants to set up a celebration.
  • The Host: Of the Midsummer's Cawnival. He sells you everything you need for the festival, from carnival games to tokens, all for gold and seeds.
  • Nice Guy: He doesn't have any malicious plots for the survivors. He just wants help setting up a festival, and he's quite happy letting them participate in the festivities themselves.

    Crow Kids

The attendees of the Cawnival, who will flock over to wherever you set it up and spectate your games.


  • Cheerful Child: They're friendly kids who are fine chatting up the survivors and spectating their games. They're here for the festivities after all.
  • Creepy Crows: Like Corvus, they're a subversion, as they're perfectly friendly kids who simply want to attend the Midsummers Cawnival and watch you play games.
  • Descriptively-Named Species: Not themselves, but they refer to the survivors as Featherfree Creatures. They're bird kids after all, so it makes sense they'd find the unfeathered humans and other creatures unusual.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • One of their blurbs has them express familiarity with Wortox, implying they've seen the imp before.
    "Who was that, with the red fur? He seemed kinda familiar."
    • They also make frequent mention of being chased away from previous places, and the concern that they could be followed by something.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Corn. Feed them popcorn or a Slushy Shake, and they'll gift you a ticket and game token.

    Queen of Moon Quay

As the name would imply, she is the queen of Moon Quay (pronounced moon-key) Island and commands the Moon Quay Pirates, though she herself is reasonable enough to deal with the Survivors provided they come bearing gifts.


  • Eloquent in My Native Tongue: Normally her dialogue comes across purely as monkey noises, but if one has been cursed into a Wonkey, she's actually very well spoken compared to her subjects.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Bananas, or bent gold as she calls it, she sends her pirates out in search of bananas, and can be offered bananas by the Survivors for blueprints for Moon Quay technology and to lift the curse of Moon Quay.
