A collection of factions, characters, and prominent users in Discovery Freelancer.
The Administration Team
The Administration Team is the band of people drawn from the teeming masses of normal users who take time out of their lives to keep Discovery sane and civilized.
Igiss
Alexander Zalessky
Igiss created Discovery Freelancer.
Tropes that could be used to describe him:
- Nice Guy: Both on forums and in real life.
Alley
Tech Stuff
Alley's actions have earned her fame. But the tropes are:
- Hackers will not be tolerated on her watch.
- Heroic Neutral: It is hard to rouse her from her slumber, but when you do, it's not pretty.
- The Roleplayer
- 10-Minute Retirement: She does this every so often, but she's often back in short order, due to...
- Vetinari Job Security: She's the very, very competent programmer on the team.
Sindroms
Sometimes Always Events
spazzy go away
- The Face: One of the more prolific admins.
- Retired Monster: Only left the DPC because he lacked the know-how to evade bans. Later made a Heel–Face Turn and is now an Administrator, with all the responsibilities that entails.
The Angels
The Angels are a group of people who take time to help new players.
Tropes about the Angels that apply across all of them are:
- The Fagin: Any Angel doing this may as well turn in their wings.
- Good Samaritan: The Angels will help anyone with anything to the best of their ability.
Nomads
The Nomads, including the Slomon K'Hara, the Nomad Vagrants, and The Wild are very much like the ones in vanilla, but with actual characterization between the Omnicidal Maniac treatment they were given.
General Tropes:
- Apocalypse How: A class 6 is pulled on Planet Toledo. But The Order deserved it.
- Benevolent Precursors: In a twist, their creators were this for them. Humanity is trespassing on their birthright.
- Death Is Cheap: If you destroy one's body, they just have another one re-grown. The process takes at least two hours, though.
- Eldritch Abomination: They're a telepathic, translucent, space-dwelling Hive Mind with a side of Time Abyss. Ultimately subverted because they were deliberately engineered by Sufficiently Advanced Aliens.
- Hive Mind: A surprisingly downplayed example. The Nomads give general goals and their individual units are free to fulfill them as they see fit. Imagine the Yeerks meeting genestealers.
- Playing Both Sides: Due to their running a grand total of three systems uncontested, they have no choice but to subvert the pesky humans to keep from facing a unified front.
- Puppeteer Parasite: They still possess people.
- Purple Is Powerful: They have access to toys literally millions of years more advanced than the best humanity has to offer.
- Resurrective Immortality
- Paranoia Fuel: Due to the K'Hara having a functionally unlimited cloak, every ship not within docking distance of a station with adequate defenses to ward off the Nomads will be feeling this.
- The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: The Order seems to take this attitude towards the Nomads despite The Core's better-funded and equipped campaign to the same ends.
- Time Abyss: 65 million years is something of a long time.
The Oracles
The Oracles are human-Nomad hybrids, representing a "middle ground" humanity and the Nomads. However, they are loyal to the Nomads first and foremost.
The Core
The Core is the best faction in Discovery hands-down.
Tropes related to The Core as a whole include:
- Evil Versus Evil: Considering that their opposition includes, but is not restricted to, pirates, drug runners, terrorists, Zoners, and Nomads, their casual oppression and Playing with Syringes tends to be glossed over.
- Lawful Evil: A core tenet of their philosophy.
- Pride: The Core perceives themselves to be the best around, and they won't let you forget that.
- Private Military Contractors: The Core started out as the elite core of one.
- Villain with Good Publicity: Those living in House space consider them heroes.
Erik Nodtviet, Exalted Guildmaster of The Core, CEO of AP Manufacturing
Lythrilux
The big cheese of The Core. Has a trail of pissed-off ex-girlfriends.It could be said of this amazing man that he:
Ruby Hydra (Guildkeeper)
Chuba
She be crazy. No, Chuba. Bad Signature.
- The Sociopath: If her actions are anything to go by.
- Real Life Writes the Plot: After Chuba got banned, she was placed in intensive care on Durban Station for an indefinite period of time.
