Main Characters

    In General
  • All Deaths Final: Nobody in the cast has plot armor. If and when their characters die (and they do), those characters stay dead.
  • Anthropomorphic Food: Sir Theobald and Chancellor Lapin are a walking, talking gummy bear and chocolate bunny, respectively.
  • Anti-Hero: After exposure to the cruel world of political intrigue, pretty much all of them have developed a ruthless side. This ranges from merely Good Is Not Soft behavior, like Theobald, to excessive shows of violence and cruelty, like Liam.
  • Author Avatar: In the Adventuring Parties for A Crown of Candy, the players talk a bit about their relationships to the characters:
    • According to Lou Wilson, King Amethar - contrasting with Kingston Brown - represents all his worst qualities; explaining why, despite being a loving and caring father and a good friend, the story frames him as a tragic character.
    • Siobhan Thompson has said that Ruby Rocks was the most accurate to her real-life self, rather than Adaine, who diverged significantly from her.
    • Theobald was said to be an aspirational self-insert by Murph, due to his lawful and honourable nature, and the most accurate representation of him by the rest of the team.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: The four humanoid characters among the party are of varying candy colored complexions: King Amethar and Ruby (bright pink), Princess Jet (purple-gray) and Liam (lavender). Sir Theobald also counts, being a dark red gummy bear.
  • Noble Fugitive: After Pontifex Belizabeth Brassica drops the bombshell that King Amethar never legally annulled the marriage from his first wife and therefore had no real claim to the throne, the Bulbian church and the Concord declare war on Candia, forcing the party to go on the run.
  • Red Baron:
    • One of Amethar's titles is "The Unfallen", in reference to him being the only survivor of the Rocks heirs during the Ravening War. This title is even more appropriate after the ridiculous number of assassination attempts he shrugs off as a king.
    • Liam earns the title of "Master of Arrows" from Saccharina, after witnessing his truly monstrous abilities in battle as an archer.
    • Saccharina has the honour of harboring three of them: "Enemy of the Faith", due to her status as the High Priestess of the Sweetening Path, a pagan religion, and her taking out her deep hatred of the Bulbian faith on the Church many times; "Archmage of Lost Sucrosi", due to her incredible magical prowess; and "The Sundae Sorceress".
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: The majority of the cast are either royals themselves or retainers of the Candian royal family, who all have some experience or desire to engage in combat.

    King Amethar

King Amethar of House Rocks

Played by: Lou Wilson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/king_amethar.png
"What's the last part of my title?"
Race: Rock Candy
Class: Barbarian (Path of the Storm Herald) / Fighter (Battle Master)

The King of Candia.

  • Black Sheep: He's a fairly heroic person, but he's much less capable with high responsibilities than his sisters. It's to the point that everyone who compares him to one of them, including himself, does so in order to berate him or push him to become better.
  • The Chains of Commanding: More at home on the battlefield, Amethar struggles with the everyday minutiae of courtly politics, leaving most of the legwork up to his wife Queen Caramelinda.
  • Dead Man Writing: Amethar wrote letters to be found on his body if he died; one addressing Jet, and another addressing Ruby. The contents of Ruby's letter were revealed in the finale's Adventuring Party.
  • Failure Hero: Amethar is a man defined by his failures more than almost anything else, save his familial love.
  • Fatal Flaw: His weakness when it comes to politics and ruling. He's a brave warrior, but he shirks the responsibilities of his station, making him vulnerable to conspiracies and political plays.
  • Expy: He's one for Eddard "Ned" Stark with the personality of Robert Baratheon.
  • Has a Type: Between his appreciation for Annabelle's crew of Lady Cheeses and his marriage to Catherine Ghee, King Amethar seems to have a taste for dairy.
  • Hidden Depths: Behind the lousy king and irresponsible Manchild that he is at the top of the season, Amethar carries the weight of his sisters' legacies while still grieving their deaths, and feels the guilt of not being able to live up to anyone's expectations of him as a king.
  • It's All My Fault: He blames himself heavily for the endangerment of his family at the cathedral, to the point that he jumps at the opportunity to sacrifice himself in that battle. He also feels very guilty for Lapin's death.
    • He blames himself even more for Jet's death.
  • Large and in Charge: Amethar is broad, seven feet tall, and - of course - the ruler of Candia.
  • Made of Iron: He survives a truly insane amount of punishment throughout the campaign - including being thrown off the highest tower of Castle Candia - and survives it all.
  • Manchild: At most times, Amethar is more concerned with what is fun, actively encourages the mischief that Jet and Ruby get up to, and has to be browbeaten by his wife into actually acting like a proper parent.
  • Named Weapon: His sword: Payment Day. It also has the ability to instantly kill any enemy on a Nat 20 (if they fail a DC 20 Constitution Save) if that enemy has killed a member of House Rocks.
  • Never Learned to Read: Amethar has to remind his wife that he is illiterate and have her dictate the contents of a letter from the Concordant Emperor of Calorum.
    • The letter he wrote to be found on him should he die was riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, and was scribbled down very messily.
  • Papa Wolf: Few things define him more than his love for his family, so much so that it's built directly into his mechanics, as per the entry for Named Weapon.
  • Stealth Pun/ Punny Name : He's the patriarch of the house of Rocks. He's Pop Rocks.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: As befitting of a king, his official title is lengthy. Specifically, he is: King Amethar, First of His Name, Sovereign Ruler of Candia and the Sugarlands, Duke of Cookieshire, Protector of the Realm and Defender of the Faith, Bannerman of the Battle of Gumdrop Pass and Hero of the Frosting Valley, the Unfallen.
  • Warrior Prince: Fought in the Great Ravening War and vastly prefers combat to royal politics.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Ambushed on the road to the capital, stabbed multiple times by highly poisonous knives, and literally thrown from the height of his castle, killing Amethar is no easy feat. There's a reason he's called The Unfallen.

    Princess Jet Rocks

Princess Jet Rocks

Played by: Emily Axford

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_jet_rocks_8.png
"I belong on the battlefield, she belongs in the sky!"
Race: Licorice
Class: Rogue / Fighter (Battle Master)

The elder twin princess of Candia, and the Duchess of Gumberly.

  • Character Development: She gains a sense of responsibility after her first foray into the world of politics and seeing the cruelty of it all, manifesting in her newfound willingness to become queen in order to make the world a better place.
  • Expy: Of Arya Stark
  • Heroic Bastard: She and Ruby are revealed to be this in Episode 5. The Pontifex unveils the secret that their father never lawfully divorced his previous wife... and, therefore, had no real claim to the Candian throne, rendering Jet and Ruby bastard children.
  • Rebellious Princess: Like her sister, Jet regularly shirks her royal duties and sneaks out with Ruby to the nearby town of Dulcington. She in particular abhors the idea of becoming Queen, and takes any opportunity to thumb her nose at the royal institution, typically in the form of property damage and knocking down any royal crest she sees.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: While investigating a lingerie shop in Dulcington following a clue found in her mother's study, she, Ruby and Liam are set upon by Ceresian assassins led by Senator Ciabatta. She is repeatedly stabbed, and though the team escapes, she later succumbs to her injuries.
  • The Team Normal: The only member of the party with no magical abilities, save for her enchanted equipment. In-game, she tries to participate in Ruby's magic lessons and fails miserably.
  • Trickster Twins: She and Ruby spend a lot of their time deceiving and making fun of Chancellor Lapin and Sir Theobald, playing tricks on them and sneaking away from Castle Candy. Mechanically speaking, the twins both have levels in the Rogue class.
  • Warrior Princess: A defiant princess who feels restrained by her title, Jet would much rather spend her time learning how to fight and become a soldier.

    Princess Ruby Rocks

Princess Ruby Rocks

Played by: Siobhan Thompson

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princess_ruby_rocks.png
"Et tu, fruite?"
Race: Licorice
Class: Rogue (Arcane Trickster) / Sorcerer (Shadow Magic)

The younger twin princess of Candia, and the Duchess of Piehole.

  • Angsty Surviving Twin: Ruby takes Jet's death very hard, stating to Cumulous that she died the moment Jet did, and that the only reason for her to continue living is to exact vengeance against her sister's murderers.
  • Broken Tears: She's a barely coherent blubbering mess by the time she arrives to her father after Jet's murder.
  • Circus Brat: Ruby isn't actually one, but she longs to run away and join the circus as an acrobat.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Ruby is a realistic look at what happens when an immature and spirited princess is thrust into the cutthroat world of politics. She's too inexperienced to understand the depths of the minefield that are court politics, leading her to work with fairly questionable people who happen to be pleasant for the sake of her current short-term goals, and when someone very close to her is killed right in front of her, she deals with her self-loathing over her failure to protect her by lashing out at everyone possible. This leads her to make decisions that would compromise her life or her realm purely for the sake of fulfilling her thirst for revenge, like wanting to stay in Buzzybrooks when the cavalry shows up to finish off a single - albeit quite powerful - commander, or giving in to paranoia and plotting the murder of her long-lost half-sister.
  • Expy: Of both Sansa and Arya Stark
  • Heroic Bastard: She and Jet are revealed to be this in Episode 5 by the Pontifex, who reveals the secret that their father never lawfully divorced his previous wife... and, therefore, had no real claim to the Candian throne, rendering Ruby and Jet bastard children.
  • Inevitable Mutual Betrayal: Averted. She works with Saccharina to defeat the enemies of House Rocks, despite both having opposing claims to the throne. During the Final Battle, they lock eyes and both accept the other could attack them in their weakened state to either obtain power, or to preemptively protect themself from the other doing it to them. Ultimately, however, they both decide to trust in family.
  • Mage Marksman: Arcane Archer type. She inherited from her aunt Lazuli both the latter's magical talent and her enchanted Energy Bow, which serves as Ruby's primary weapon.
  • Rebellious Princess: Like her sister, Ruby regularly shirks her royal duties and sneaks out with Jet to the nearby town of Dulcington.
  • Spare to the Throne: The second in line to the throne of Candia, but, like her sister Jet, she doesn't seem particularly interested in becoming queen.
    • After Jet's death at the hands of Senator Ciabatta and his goons in Episode 9, Ruby takes her place as next-in-line for the Candian throne...
    • ...and then becomes this again in the finale after recognizing Saccharina's claim to the throne.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: For the first half of the campaign, the Rocks twins are largely just naively irresponsible due to being spoiled princesses and Ruby is the slightly milder half, being not quite as combative or openly impertinent as Jet. That all changes after Jet's death in Episode 9, as Ruby's grief immerses her in blind rage at not just the people responsible, but the world in general. As a result, she becomes much colder towards everyone except Amethar and Liam. This is most pronounced in her relationships with Saccharina and Caramelinda: her interactions with the former almost exclusively consist of scorn and hostility even after Saccharina has proven herself an ally (she even exhibits anger towards Liam just for making conversation with Saccharina) and her behavior towards her mother shifts from childish disobedience to lashing out with full intent of emotionally wounding her. The latter of these instances forces Amethar to step in and counsel her to stop pushing away her own family and allies.
  • Trickster Twins: She and Jet spend a lot of their time deceiving and making fun of of Chancellor Lapin and Sir Theobald, playing tricks on them and sneaking away from Castle Candy. Mechanically speaking, the twins both have levels in the Rogue class.

    Chancellor Lapin Cadbury

Chancellor Lapin Cadbury

Played by: Zac Oyama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chancellor_lapin_cadbury_4.png
"Where is your Bulb now?"
Race: Chocolate Bunny
Class: Warlock (The Celestial)

The Chancellor of House Rocks, Chaplain of Castle Candy, Primogen of the Bulbian Church, and tutor to the princesses.

  • Badass Boast: A simple but iconic one delivered to Sir Keradin after successfully manipulating him into becoming an unwitting stool pigeon and revealing his co-conspirators in the attempted assassination of King Amethar.
Lapin: "Where is your Bulb now?"
  • Deal with the Devil: Lapin is a warlock, but unlike most examples, he has a celestial patron that grants him his power. Though it isn't the Great Bulb that the rest of Calorum worships, but rather an old Candian deity known as the Sugar Plum Fairy.
  • Defiant to the End: Spends his final moments mocking the Pontifex and the Bulbian Church's faith, knowing the Great Bulb they worship does not care for anybody and is in fact not a sentient being.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Not only does he speak to the Sugar Plum Fairy as if she was his equal, which is fitting considering he owes her three wishes, he doesn't bother to contain the fact that he doesn't like her.
  • Evil Chancellor: Subverted. His initial shady exterior, not being well-liked and the secret that he doesn't worship the Bulb but rather the mysterious Sugar Plum Fairy seems to feed into this trope. Over time Lapin proves himself to be a heroic figure, albeit a devious trickster of one.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Became so engrossed in his own lecture that he failed to notice that the princesses he was tutoring had sneaked away, and he was in fact talking to a pair of scarecrows for ninety minutes.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: The least liked and respected by everyone else of the main cast.
  • Guile Hero: Lapin sets himself apart from the rest of the cast with his ability to deftly navigate court politics and use his suspicious demeanor to his advantage, gleaning information about the underhanded schemes going on beneath the seemingly peaceful alliances in Calorum.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He uses up his major actions in battle casting Fly on Sir Theobald, who helps the princesses and the rest of the Candian royals escape the Cathedral of Saint Arugula at the cost of Lapin being left behind, and interposing himself between Sir Keradin and Liam Whilelmina. Everyone else manages to flee to safety, while Lapin is cut down by Pontifex Brassica's guards and killed by Sir Keradin.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While undeniably brave, noble, and heroic, that doesn't stop Lapin from being a jerk to others on occasion.
    Theobald: I misjudged you, Chancellor.
    Lapin: Oh, shut up.
  • Killed Off for Real: Lapin ends up getting brutally executed by Sir Keradin in "Chaos in the Cathedral," his head smashed in by Keradin's mace. This event also marks the first permanent PC death in Dimension 20 history.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name Lapin is the French word for "rabbit", and his surname is a reference to the Cadbury chocolate company.
  • Old Windbag: He's an old man, and his lessons with the princesses are noted to be long and composed of him rambling on about dull subjects for unbearably long periods of time.
  • Private Tutor: Lapin is responsible for educating Princess Jet and Ruby, but isn't very engaging or good at keeping an eye on them.
  • Rascally Rabbit: Lapin proves to be incredibly cunning when he fools Sir Keradin by pretending to be The Mole and has him give up information on who orchestrated the plot to assassinate King Amethar. His secretive nature and ambiguous moral position further lend themselves to his roguish, trickster persona.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Lapin's shocking and brutal death in Episode 6 serves to show the higher, deadlier stakes that are in play in this season.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Downplayed. Though he's a main character, he dies in only the sixth episode out of 17 total. However, his masterful deception of Sir Keradin and subsequent arrest of Arcbishop Alfreddi makes the bad guys unable to create more water blades, which were the biggest threat to the Candians. By Episode 9, they've all been spent, except for one that Ruby kept.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: After telling everyone about his badass line that he directed at Deeproot after interrogating him, he describes it as "uncharacteristically rad" of him.
  • Virtuous Character Copy: His character resembles the cunning and ruthless advisors working behind the scenes for their own ambitions, with Littlefinger being cited by his player as an inspiration. However, he ultimately proves to be much more virtuous than them.

    Sir Theobald Gumbar

Sir Theobold Gumbar

Played by: Brian Murphy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sir_theobald_gumbar.png
"Chancellor, do they not have a spell that tells you what time it is!?"
Race: Gummy Bear
Class: Fighter (Eldritch Knight)

The Lord Commander of the Tartguard, bodyguard of House Rocks, and Sworn Knight of the Order of North-Gumbia.

  • Aggressive Submissive: He's authoritative and commanding, which doesn't stop him from being quite eager to be dominated by Gooey.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's the most unfailingly polite and diplomatic member of the group, and he tends to be underestimated or even ridiculed by the people around him. He's still an extremely dangerous warrior and one of Candia's most capable vassals, something that three of Calroy's men learn the hard way when he blasts open the door they locked him behind and cuts down all three before they can even react.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Assigned as protector of the King and princesses, all three of whom are combat capable and can handle themselves in a fight. Theobald was also previously assigned as the ward (or unofficial squire) to Archmage Lazuli Rocks, who was said to be a powerful spellcaster.
  • Dork Knight: Theobald is a bit of a square, but he's a force to be reckoned with in battle, proving instrumental in saving the Candian royals on more than one occasion.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Theo is probably the most honorable of the main characters, and genuinely wants the good of the realm and its people. However, he's completely ready to kill whoever threatens the kingdom and its rulers, is much more ready to accept Port Syrup's annihilation by Saccharina's marauders as the cost of waging war against the Bulbian Church, and doesn't hesitate to snitch on the young princesses whenever they're being mischievous.
  • Magic Knight: Theobald is an Eldritch Knight, and is able to cast spells alongside participating in melee combat. He also has the aid of a familiar, an animated sugar sprinkle named Sprinkle.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Zigzagged; whilst unfailingly loyal to the House of Rocks, their decision not to tell him about the true line of succession in the finale disillusions him, prompting him to swear allegiance to Saccharina, though he ultimately is not forced to actively betray them; see below.
  • Only Sane Man: A constant professional who has to deal with the bumbling, incompetent Tartguard and rein in the antics of two trouble-making princesses.
    • Later becomes a Deconstructed Trope as the Rocks not telling him crucial information about the current line of succession becomes the straw that breaks the camel's back after years of putting up with their incompetence and dismissiveness, turning his loyalty fully to Saccharina. Fortunately, the two sides eventually reconcile, but it's clear even after where his true loyalty lies now.
  • Stone Wall: He doesn't do that much damage, but he more than makes up for it with his ability to soak up ludicrous degrees of attacks. At one point, Theobald was in a situation where he was facing 20 infantry fighters, and not a single one of them managed to hit his Armor Class, so he took precisely zero damage from all 20 attacks.

    Liam Wilhelmina (and Peppermint Preston)

Liam Wilhelmina of House Jawbreaker

Played by: Ally Beardsley

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/liam_wilhelmina_of_house_jawbreaker.png
"Can I see if they hate me?"
Race: Peppermint
Class: Ranger (Beast Master formerly, Gloom Stalker currently) / Rogue (Assassin)

A ward of House Rocks under the command of his family in House Jawbreaker, and the Count of Freezyburg.

  • Aloof Archer: His primary weapon is a crossbow, and he fits the personality type by being somewhat aloof and reserved even before Preston's death hardens him into a revenge-driven Cold Sniper.
  • A Boy and His X: Liam doesn't go anywhere without his adorable pet piglet Peppermint Preston.
  • Break the Cutie: A sweet and easygoing kid who becomes devastated following a Trauma Conga Line of witnessing countless people, friend and foe, be brutally murdered, including his best friend and pet Peppermint Preston. By Episode 6, he's gone from friendly and naïve to swearing bloody vengeance against the the man who killed Preston; and by Episode 12, he's become a ruthless and battle-hardened killer with absolutely no empathy for his enemies. This character shift is also represented in game mechanics by his switch from the Beast Master Conclave to the Gloom Stalker, since he no longer has an animal companion.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Referred to as "Little Mint" by his older brothers.
  • Epic Fail: It's not uncommon to get slapped by a person you wish to flirt with. It's another thing entirely to have them challenge you to a Duel to the Death because your attempts at flirting are that badly worded.
  • Expy: Of Theon Greyjoy.
  • Heal the Cutie: After meaningful talks with Joren and Lapin, where he fully understands the implications and consequences of being a war guy and the changing, fleeting nature of life respectively, he tries to stop being this cold, ruthless killing machine he was becoming, and mellows out a bit right after that. With a brief relapse to save Theobald and take out some villains, he actually manages to go back to being a "seed guy", even reviving the recently deceased Pontifex and Keradin and settling down with Primsy.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: His older brothers used to bully him relentlessly, doing things like making him play stairs, a game where Liam had to be all the stairs.
Spearia: Wow. Uh, I should be paying more attention to what's been going on, because that's... yeah, that's full abuse.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He tries to be nice with Sir Morris and even flirt with him by saying "he could pack it in". Sir Morris is so offended that he challenges him to a Duel to the Death to take place after the war.
  • Innocent Innuendo: While practicing casual flirting with Cumulous, he asks him if he wants to "get slammed down, big style", repeating something all his parents used to say to each other and love. Everyone else here at the moment is shocked.
  • It's Personal with the Dragon: Considers Sir Keradin to be his Arch-Enemy after the latter kills Peppermint Preston in the church massacre, and declares his intent to kill the Bulbian knight at every possible opportunity. He eventually realizes that his thirst for revenge is just perpetuating the Cycle Of Violence that plagues Calorum and backs off, but still makes a point of seeking out Keradin during the final battle.
  • Mage Marksman: Arcane Archer variety, like Ruby. He fights with a crossbow, and also knows traditional Candian druid magic taught to him by his mother.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname is a reference to the Wilhelmina Peppermint brand of candy.
  • Nature Hero: Liam is more comfortable within the forests of Candia than the confines of Castle Candy. He's also capable of the Druidcraft cantrip, making flowers bloom from the seeds he collects.
  • Parental Neglect: In the one flashback we've seen of his home life before his move to Castle Candy, his childhood apparently wasn't great. While his father Duke Jawbreaker did gift him with Preston as a birthday present, he also had to be reminded by Liam's mother that it was in fact Liam's birthday. Not to mention Duke Jawbreaker blanked on his own son's name, and - immediately after - confuses Liam's name with his new pig's. His mother Spearia does love him, but wasn't aware of the bullying Liam's brothers inflicted upon him until Liam himself points out he's been grossly neglected.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Liam cannot pick up on social cues to save his life, best exemplified at the feast before the Grand Tournament. It's so bad that he has to be coached by Annabelle Cheddar into how to have a proper conversation.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Liam's Heroic BSoD in Episode 6 and subsequent switch to a Gloomstalker Ranger conveniently coincides with Ally hitting a long, multi-episode streak of truly insane combat rolls. By Episode 12 he is pretty much unanimously agreed to be the most stone-cold motherfucker in the party.
  • Took A Level In Cynicism: Goes from a kind and idealistic kid to a jaded, spiteful, revenge-driven assassin after Peppermint Preston is killed.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: After they reunite, his mother laments that he's become so cold and cruel.
  • White Sheep: Of House Jawbreaker. The Jawbreakers hate the Candian royal family for dishonoring them, and the primary reason Liam was adopted as a ward (read: kept as a political prisoner) by House Rocks is because he would be the least likely to assassinate King Amethar.

Peppermint Preston

Race: Peppermint Pig
Class: Ranger's Companion

Liam's faithful animal companion and best friend.

  • Cue the Flying Pigs: When Preston eats one of the magical peppermint Heart Seeds that Liam finds, he gains a minor wish and apparently uses it to gain the ability to fly short distances like a sparkly bottle rocket.
  • Killed Off for Real: Killed by Sir Keradin at the battle of Saint Arugula's Church in an attempt to protect Lapin. It's especially hard-hitting in that ranger companions under the Beast Master Conclave are able to be resurrected, but Word of God confirms that Preston is permanently dead. This is further cemented by Liam's subclass changing from Beast Master to the Gloom Stalker Conclave.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Follows Liam everywhere, and is protective of both him and the rest of the party. In fact, one of Preston's final actions was rushing to protectively cover Lapin's dying body in an attempt to give him advantage on death saving throws, which ultimately fails.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: An unbelievably adorable piglet who is described as soft and fuzzy, yet cool to the touch like peppermint. He also flies and it's also said that when he dreams, he dreams of seeds.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Preston ends up dying in a fruitless attempt to shield Lapin's body from further attack by the Bulbian church's guards, and his death marks a significant change in both Liam and the rest of the main characters.
  • Team Pet: Liam's animal companion, universally beloved and adored by both him and the rest of the party.

    Cumulous Rocks (spoiler character)

Cumulous Rocks

Played by: Zac Oyama

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cumulous_rocks.png
"Now what happened with those Christmas Cards?"
Race: Cotton Candy
Class: Monk (Way of the Long Death)

A distant cousin of House Rocks, and monk of the Order of the Spinning Star.

  • Bad Powers, Good People: His powers are drawn from the Hungry One, and include supernaturally striking fear into the hearts of his enemies or outright draining their souls, but Cumulous himself is a steadfast and loyal ally to House Rocks. And it's later revealed that the Hungry One is not sentient, but just another source of cosmic power like the Bulb.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up as the members of House Rock are attacked by the mercenaries of House Bleu.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: As a monk of the Way of the Long Death, he has an interesting relationship with death. He's very casual about killing living beings, but he doesn't seem to consider the deaths of his allies as a very big deal, but rather as another way of being, as seen as the very calm and unemotional way he talks about the deceased Lazuli, the person he admired the most. However, he understands that not everyone shares his outlook, as seen when he tries to comfort Ruby after Jet's death.
  • Blow You Away: His staff Fluffwind grants him whirlwind abilities, and he also has the power to disincorporate into mist.
  • The Comically Serious: A common source of gags is Cumulous' stone-faced seriousness regardless of the situation around him — such as asking why House Rocks stopped sending him holiday greetings cards in the middle of a pitched sea battle.
  • Dissonant Serenity: For a calm, graceful monk, he has no problems mercilessly killing subdued foes.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Appears in a flashback of Theobald's first day as a knight an episode prior to his formal introduction.
  • Fragile Speedster: Incredibly quick on his feet — he escapes being pinned down by enemy soldiers in "Blood and Bread" by simply outrunning them — but also the most fragile of the party's melee fighters. He goes down from a single heavy blow during the party's battle with the Sugar Plum Fairy.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After witnessing the confrontation between Gooey and Theobald become flirtatious, he says that everyone's insane... as he's breaking the neck of a chicken and absorbing its life force.
  • The Quiet One: Is a very soft spoken character.
  • Running Gag: Cumulous weeps with reverence whenever he comes into contact with magical artifacts, like Payment Day or Sourscratch. In one episode he spends hours crying in a room while surrounded by arcane Candian paraphernalia.
  • Static Character: Doesn't get much Character Development over the campaign compared to the rest of House Rocks (even Saccharina, who's introduced a few episodes after him). His main narrative role is to be a source of support during the royal family's Darkest Hour, and later to demonstrate that some factions of Candia would prefer Saccharina on the throne over Amethar or Ruby.
  • Super-Soldier: Cumulous (along with some of his fellow monks of the Spinning Star) were magically modified by Archmage Lazuli while the latter was still alive, granting them the ability to manipulate Life Energy to perform superhuman feats. Cumulous is apparently the monk whose "transformation" was most successful.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Demonstrates this to the surrendering mercenaries of House Bleu.

    Saccharina Ghee (Spoiler Character)

Queen Saccharina Ghee of House Frostwhip

Played by: Emily Axford

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saccharina.png
"Forgiven."
Race: Ice Cream Sundae
Class: Sorcerer (Storm Sorcery) / Cleric (Tempest Domain)

The leader of Candian marauders living in the Great Stone Candy Mountains. She is also the illegitimate daughter of King Amethar and Catherine Ghee, and the rightful heir to the Candian throne.

  • The Ace: She's one of the most powerful people in Calorum for a few reasons. Not only does she have plenty of combat experience, she has the mental capabilities and the will necessary to make a terrifying political adversary; she's also a powerful witch whose powers are nearly unmatched as far as we know, save for Lazuli, a legendary archmage, and the Sugar-Plum Fairy, a literal deity...
    • Broken Ace: ...but she's a very lonely woman who's lived her whole life either fighting or being abused, and whose desire for a family to love her unconditionally leads her to reluctantly leave Cinnamon to satisfy his hunger for Bulbian believers' hearts, which culminates in the total wiping out of Port Syrup's population.
  • The Archmage: One of her titles, and she deserves it, having wiped out most of the infantry at Buzzybrooks in two spells, turning the desperate struggle to save Joren Jawbreaker into a Curb-Stomp Battle.
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: She's aiming to become one in order to preserve Candia's magical heritage and its people.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Any show of support for the Bulb tends to get a strong emotional reaction from her, due to her own Dark and Troubled Past as an abused child in a Bulbian monastery.
    • Related to the above along with her Parental Abandonment, she's quick to be hurt whenever she makes a show of trust or affection to another person that isn't reciprocated. The perceived lack of respect she gets from House Rocks for her participation in the war effort comes very close to causing her to question her whole crusade and become a Sorcerous Overlord rather than her original goal of a Benevolent Mage Ruler, but some conversations with Theo and Amethar near the end ultimately help her to reconsider and keep to her original course.
  • Catchphrase: Tends to say "forgiven" whenever someone makes a minor faux pas against her.
  • Child of Forbidden Love: The long-lost daughter of Amethar and Catherine Ghee, who were married in secret in a ceremony not recognized by the Bulbian Church.
  • Desperately Craves Affection: Her biggest weakness is familial love, which she's never had the chance to experience.
  • Delinquent Hair: Saccharina wears her hair in a mohawk that sweeps down one side of her head, and is dyed to resemble the colors of Neapolitan ice cream. She also styles herself as an enemy of the Bulbian church, leading a group of looters and bandits that live outside of mainstream Candian society.
  • Didn't Think This Through: She is presented as the rightful queen and heir after Amethar’s excommunication, but considering she’s an open pagan and enemy of the church who is just as much at war with the other kingdoms as Duke Jawbreaker, the legitimacy of her claim is highly suspect, and would likely fall apart the moment she attempted to publicly claim the throne.
    • Then again, given her ultimate goal is to overthrow the church and destroy its role in politics and she doesn’t care about the throne, it may be less that she didn’t think it through and more that she doesn’t care.
  • Dragon Rider: She rides on Cinnamon during the Final Battle and provides aerial support for the rest of the invasion forces, strafing Castle Candy's walls and destroying much of the enemy's artillery single-handedly.
  • Expy: Daenerys Targaryen
  • Foil: To Caramelinda. Both of them are very capable leaders with magical powers with both a profound love for Lazuli Rocks and a traumatic and tragic separation from her, and they're not scared of doing what's necessary for the needs of their subjects. Saccharina places herself as an enemy of the Bulbian faith, has lived an incredibly shitty childhood, desires Amethar's love so much that him merely wanting to love her pleases her, and has been fighting on the battlefield her entire life. Meanwhile, Caramelinda is a devout Bulbian, had a relatively comfortable upbringing as the daughter of a noble, despises Amethar for his irresponsibility and childishness, and is so out of her depths in battle that despite her magical abilities, she's forced to play at being support if she can even contribute.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: Despite Liam's shitty home life being somewhat Played for Laughs and the cast all being comedians, it's averted hard with her. The flashback to her childhood is one of the most emotionally grueling and intense scenes in all of Dimension 20 (to the point that the episode in which it was revealed came with a full-blown content warning), and manages to make the Bulbian Church seem even more brutal and cruel than what we've seen.
  • Hidden Backup Princess: Saccharina, unbeknownst to everyone except herself and her followers, is the first trueborn daughter of King Amethar and, as such, she's next in line for the Candian throne once Amethar is excomunicated. These news are received with mixed reactions by the Royal family and their followers.
  • An Ice Person: Saccharina is an ice-cream Candian and wields the staff Winterscoop, which allows her to cast the Wall of Ice spell.
  • Inevitable Mutual Betrayal: Averted. She works with Ruby to defeat the enemies of House Rocks, despite them both having opposing claims to the throne. During the Final Battle they lock eyes and both accept the other could attack them in their weakened state to either obtain power, or to pre-emptively protect themself from the other doing it to them. Ultimately, however, they both decide to trust in family.
  • King of Thieves: The revered queen of a brood of Candian outcasts who steal all manner of things from weapons to magical artifacts. Brennan explicitly compares Saccharina and her marauders to Robin Hood and the Merry Men.
  • Locked Away in a Monastery: Saccharina was raised as an orphan in a Bulbian nunnery. She eventually escaped after her sorcery powers awakened, and then travelled around for many years, freeing other orphans from Bulbian monasteries.
  • Magic Knight: While she strongly favors magic, she also wears heavy armor (making her the only party member besides Theobald who does so) and carries a number of mundane weapons on her person for emergencies.
  • Meaningful Name: Her first name is derived from "saccharine", another word for sweet.
  • One-Woman Army: In the Buzzybrooks battle, she destroys most of the infantry by herself and in the final battle, she hops up on Cinnamon and manages to take on the entirety of the troops on the walls of the castle by herself, with her big damaging area-of-effect spells taking out a good chunk of them.
  • Parental Abandonment: Saccharina's mother Catherine had her Locked Away in a Monastery not long after she was born, out of fear that she would be hunted down and exploited or killed for being a bastard child of Candian royalty. She carries an obvious edge of resentment towards her mother for doing this even as an adult in the present day. For extra salt in the wound, the finale reveals that Amethar spent years trying to find Catherine after the war, and neither of them were ever in any real danger.
  • Red Mage: She's mostly an offensive caster, but she does have some healing magic.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Downplayed. She dislikes war, especially its horrors and the atrocities she needs to commit in order to keep up with her enemies, but she sometimes relish in the suffering of her enemies. However, even that hatred has its limits, as she's horrified to find Port Syrup razed and its population mercilessly killed by Cinnamon and her marauders.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: A graceful, affable, charming leader with both enough arcane power to tear through an army by herself and the mind to do so efficiently.
  • Shock and Awe: Saccharina is both a Storm sorcerer and a cleric of the Tempest domain, sub-classes which grant her immense control over lightning and thunder magic. Her debut battle episode "Rescue at Buzzybrook" includes a number of impressive displays of her power: at one point Saccharina casts Thunderstep to spirit Joren Jawbreaker to safety and blast all the enemies surrounding her, using her Channel Divinity to maximize the thunder damage dealt and on top of that add further damage from her Storm Sorcery.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: Like her father Amethar, she has a number of titles under her name. Specifically, she is: Queen Saccharina of House Frostwhip, First of Her Name, Sovereign Ruler of Candia and the Sugarlands, Witch-Queen of the Dairy Sea, High Priestess of the Sweetening Path, Archmage of Lost Sucrosia, Enemy of the Faith, the Sundae Sorceress, Storm-Captain of the Frosted Fleet.

The Kingdom of Candia

    Lord Calroy Cruller

Lord Calroy "Cal" Cruller

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lord_calroy_cruller.png
"You know what happens to a man when he dies? He shits himself. I’ll be happy to watch you shit one last time. Here's to a future that you can't ruin."
Race: Strawberry Cake
Class: Rogue (Swashbuckler)

The Marquis of Muffinfield and King Amethar's right hand man.

  • Anthropomorphic Food: Is literally a slice of cake with arms and legs.
  • Big Bad Friend: Revealed in "Safe Harbor" to have been a traitor to Candia for many years. His nefarious deeds ranged from selling weapons to enemy countries to orchestrating assassination attempts on the royal family; namely, the ambush on the Sucrosi Road and the attempted murder of Amethar during the Grand Tournament were both his doing.
  • Big Bad Triumvirate: With Pontifex Belizabeth and Imperator Ciabatta.
  • The Chessmaster: He masterminded every move the villains of the series made in the first half of the show, either by coercing them into following his plans, seemingly working for them, or manipulating them into serving his goals by trying to achieve their own.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Literally stabs Amethar in the back.
  • Expy: To Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish, being a cunning minor noble and The Chessmaster who rises to power through schemes and manipulation and betrays the protagonists.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Of the other Big Bads of the season, he's the Thief, whether in combat or politics. He prefers to rely on deception and pulling the strings to make other factions do the dirty work, and he's a Swashbuckler Rogue.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: Calroy and Amethar are old war buddies and very close friends, but when Calroy reveals his years of treason and stabs Amethar in the back, he also explains how he's resented Amethar for stumbling blindly into power whilst Calroy has had to scheme and scrape his way up to it from a low position in aristocratic society.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He's the reason that Belizabeth and Ciabatta have elevated to the rank of Big Bads.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: Downplayed. He's a pretty good fighter, but he's much weaker than most of the cast, with even Caramelinda - who's never fought on the battlefield, and mostly plays magical support when she's forced to later on - being able to take him. However, his brilliant plans and ability to think on the fly and adapt have made him into the biggest threat towards the Royal House of Candia.
  • Number Two: One of Amethar's brothers in arms and his most trusted guardsman.
  • Spotting the Thread: Manta Ray Jack mentioning that Amethar had "a girl stashed away in the Dairy Isles" confused him, because Amethar had never mentioned her, in spite of him never being bashful about his conquests. This made him curious enough to have Manta Ray Jack tortured for information, and then later magically compelled to speak the truth about Catherine Ghee, which gave him and his co-conspirators the information that they needed to have Amethar excommunicated and stripped of his title and throne.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's really hard to talk about him without mentioning his years of betrayals and plots against Candia and House Rocks.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Forced to alter his plans to kill Amethar on the fly after Amethar resists every single one of them.

    Queen Caramelinda

Queen Caramelinda Rocks

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/queen_caramelinda.png
"I’m glad you have, after much convincing, seen fit to do what you must do."
Race: Caramel

King Amethar's wife and the Queen of Candia. Also the Duchess of House Meringue, Keeper of Castle Candy, and the Heart of the Realm.

  • Altar Diplomacy: In her own words, her marriage to Amethar is "just politics". She was previously in a relationship with Amethar's sister Lazuli, whom she actually loved, but after Lazuli's death Caramelinda and Amethar married to maintain the alliance.
  • Awful Wedded Life: She truly dislikes Amethar, whom she justifiably considers an immature and irresponsible meathead, and views her marriage to him as simply politics. In addition, she used to be married to Lazuli, they were truly in love, and the fact that Caramelinda is still grieving Lazuli makes her even more resentful of Amethar, the only one of the Rocks siblings who survived.
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: Proves to be a powerful spellcaster in "Safe Harbor", presumably having learned magic from her former wife Archmage Lazuli Rocks.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Caramelinda is tasked with handling the day to day matters of ruling Candia, since her husband isn't equipped with the political savvy to run an entire kingdom. It's made clear that she doesn't enjoy this position and that it wasn't entirely her choice, but she shoulders the burden out of duty to her home country.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Says in no uncertain terms she wouldn't mind if "something happened" to Saccharina, whom she sees as unfit for the throne, in the final battle.
  • Settle for Sibling: Deconstructed. Caramelinda used to be in a loving marriage with Amethar's sister Lazuli, and ended up in a political marriage to Amethar after Lazuli died. Unfortunately, since Amethar and Lazuli are very different people, Caramelinda and Amethar very much do not fall in love, leading to a rather tense and miserable situation for both of them.
  • Wet Blanket Wife: A justified example. Caramelinda is often forced into this role, having to be the stern parent and act like the bad guy because Amethar doesn't take his daughters' education and safety as seriously as he should. This has led to a lot of built-up resentment from her daughters - who see her as a killjoy and unwilling to take them seriously - when all Caramelinda is trying to do is to keep them safe, educated, and cared for.

    General Rococoa

Queen General Rococoa Rocks

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rococoa.png
Race: Chocolate

The elder sister of Amethar and the eldest sibling of House Rocks, making her a princess and the first in line to the throne until her untimely death. She was the last of the four Rocks sisters to die during the Ravening War.

  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric. She's steadfast, dutiful, and practical-minded.
  • He Knows Too Much: Rococoa was assassinated because she discovered that Lord Calroy was selling weapons to the Ceresians.
  • Human Pincushion: How she died. Rococoa was found riddled with arrows while fighting in Ceresia. The strange thing about it being her corpse was found far, far away from the front lines and well beyond the range of any enemy archers. This is because she was assassinated by a fellow Candian.
  • Posthumous Character: Rococoa has been deceased for many years by the time the campaign starts.
  • Warrior Princess: She fought on the front line as first-in-line to the throne of Candia as the eldest daughter of Jadain Rocks.
  • What Could Have Been: It was revealed after the show ended that Bitternight Darknibs, a wanted criminal mentioned in the first episode, was Siobhan's back-up character and an undead revenant of Rococoa seeking revenge on Lord Calroy. We never got to see this play out since Ruby Rocks stayed alive throughout the whole campaign.

    Archmage Lazuli

Archmage Lazuli Rocks

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lazuli.png
Race: Blue Raspberry Rock Candy

A powerful spellcaster, elder sister of Amethar, and the second eldest child of House Rocks. She was the first of the four Rocks sisters to die during the Ravening War.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Amethar refers to her as "Laz".
  • The Archmage: Lord Cruller claims this is just a title given as an anachronism, an ancient holdover, and that Lazuli was just a proficient alchemist - no more magical than your common potions shop owner. Theobald Gumbar, however, knows she was a powerful spellcaster.
  • Badass Bookworm: She was a leading researcher of Candian magic, as well as a powerful battlefield caster.
  • Big Good: Serves this role posthumously, as a spirit mentor to both Ruby and Saccharina, and her research helps the heroes throughout the campaign — including giving them a warning about the true nature of The Sugar Plum Fairy.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic. She's goal-driven, aloof, and analytical.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Sacrificed herself in battle to secure Gustavo Uvano's position as ruler. She called down a downpour of arcane arrows and took out battalions of enemy forces, saving the lives of everyone in Candia's armies. When she dismissed Theobald just before doing so, she told him that this needed to be done to save their people and the world.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Caramelinda, who she was previously wedded to until Lazuli died and Caramelinda was forced into an arranged marriage with Amethar. Caramelinda is still grieving her death many years later.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: She tutored a young Theobald Gumbar in magic and died during the Ravening War.
  • Posthumous Character: Lazuli has been deceased for many years by the time the campaign starts.
  • Seers: Theobald believes she had some power to see the future, and saw the coming of Princess Ruby Rocks and her arcane powers.
  • Sibling Rivalry: She and Saint Citrina had a disagreement about the Order of the Spinning Star, of which Lazuli was the founder.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: The most brainy one of the Rocks sisters, and the only one wearing glasses in her character art.
  • Time-Travel Tense Trouble: A variation. Due to her Seer abilities, she sometimes had trouble keeping track of what events had already happened and what events were yet to happen.

    Saint Citrina

Saint Citrina Rocks

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/citrina.png
Race: Citrus Rock Candy

A primogen of the Bulbian Church, elder sister of Amethar, and the third eldest child of House Rocks. She was the third of the Rocks sisters to die during the Ravening War.

  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine. She's cheerful, compassionate, and very idealistic.
  • Look Both Ways: Was run down in the street by Belizabeth Brassica.
  • Marry for Love: Supported Amethar's marriage to Catherine Ghee and defended it when Rococoa wanted it annulled, since she believed that annulling a marriage of love would be spitting in the face of a sacred vow to the Bulb.
  • Patron Saint: After her death, she was canonized as a Saint of the Bulbian Church.
  • Posthumous Character: Citrina has been deceased for many years by the time the campaign starts.
  • Sibling Rivalry: She and Archmage Lazuli had a big falling out over the Order of the Spinning Star, which Lazuli founded and Citrina disapproved of.

    Princess Sapphria

Princess Sapphria Rocks

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sapphria.png
Race: Blueberry Rock Candy

A Candian diplomat, espionage agent, elder sister of Amethar, and the fourth eldest child of House Rocks. She was the second of the Rocks sisters to die during the Ravening War.

  • Ambadassador: Part of the House of Rocks, who is famed for her negotiation skills and diplomacy.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic. She's level-headed, reserved, and was famed for her skill in diplomacy and espionage.
  • The Mole: Was an accomplished spy, meeting with foreign ambassadors and stealing information from them.
  • Posthumous Character: Sapphria has been deceased for many years by the time the campaign starts.
  • The Spymaster: Whilst publicly she was a known as a skilled diplomat, she was also an accomplished spy and stealth expert. Unfortunately, she wasn't good enough to survive the Ravening War.
  • Tempting Fate: After learning of Amethar's marriage to Catherine Ghee, she responds that it's not worth worrying about because Amethar is fifth in line for the Candian throne; and, that in order for it to represent any sort of major political problem, she and all three of her sisters would have to be somehow taken out of the line of succession... which is exactly what happened.

    Duke Joren Jawbreaker

Duke Joren Jawbreaker

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duke_joren_jawbreaker.png
"The last king was a pussy, and everyone's a pussy..."
Race: Jawbreaker

The Duke of House Jawbreaker, and Keeper of Castle Manylicks.

  • Exotic Extended Marriage: Is noted to have at least 34 partners, among them Liam's mother Spearia. Joren's polygamy is one of the many reasons he's at odds with the Bulbian church.
  • Hidden Depths: Admits to Liam that before he was a warrior, he was most interested in music. When he first killed someone in defense of a villager, he realized he would have to learn to enjoy violence or else he would, in his words, "fall into myself forever".
  • Honor Before Reason: He ran into an obvious trap set by the Ceresians that nearly cost him his life because he couldn't stand to stay and let villages be burned without doing something.
  • Open-Minded Parent: He's immediately and completely accepting of Liam's Asexuality, telling his son that he should be proud of his asexual identity the same way that Joran is proud of his own poly identity.
  • Parental Neglect: Of the emotional, neglectful variety. Duke Joren once forgot Liam's birthday, having had to be reminded and clearly gave Peppermint Preston as a last-minute gift. He also immediately blanks on his own son's name, followed by confusing it with the new pig's name. He's also either not aware or subtly encourages the bullying that Liam endures from his other brothers.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Surprisingly so, as he has no issues with giving up his crown to Saccharina for the good of Candia.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: His character art depicts him without a shirt or tunic, showing off his broad chest.

    Spearia Mentha

Spearia Mentha

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spearia_mentha.png
Race: Spearmint

Liam's mother, and one of Duke Joren Jawbreaker's many partners.

  • Aura Vision: Hinted at. She instantly deduces Ruby and Saccharina's identities and the nature of their rivalry within seconds of meeting them in person.
  • Druid: The Candian equivalent of this, as a priestess of the animistic Sweetening Path and one of House Rocks' most knowledgeable allies on the old ways of Candian magic. It's implied that she was the one who taught Liam his earliest magical spells.
  • Parents as People: Spearia loves her son, but is blindsided when Liam tells her he's been bullied by his other brothers. She admits that she was being somewhat neglectful.
  • Polyamory: She's happy to share her husband with at least 34 other partners, as she's the one married to him under the Bulbian Church.

    Swifty

Swifty

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/swifty.png
"I'm a fucked up little guy."
Race: Gingerbread Man

A murderous gingerbread man.

  • Ax-Crazy: Swifty makes no attempt to hide his violent intent.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Swifty will be the first to admit that he’s not a good person. As he puts it, "I'm deep down bad, and I recognize that."
  • Death Seeker: After a threat is made on his life, Swifty claims that he wants to die and his life is torture.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Although an enemy of the oppressive Bulbian church, Swifty does many comically evil things, such as randomly stabbing Theobald because Amethar suggested he didn't know who their queen was, and recommending they murder Joren, a potential ally.
  • The Mad Hatter: A self-proclaimed "fucked up little guy".
  • Murder-Suicide: Surprisingly Played for Laughs in a Black Comedy way, but his first wife died in a "botched murder-suicide", though who was the one intended to die first is unclear.
  • No Indoor Voice: Screams nearly every line. Amethar and Theobald note Swifty's voice is so high-pitched they find it difficult to understand what he is saying sometimes.
  • Older Than They Look: Despite looking and sounding like a small child, Swifty is 43 years old and used to be married (twice divorced).
  • Psycho Knife Nut: Swifty is very enthusiastic about stabbing people.
  • Recovered Addict: Claims to be this. He still smokes cigarettes, though.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Murdered his own parents for trying to send him to a Bulbian monastery.
  • Super-Speed: In a nod to The Gingerbread Man.
  • Til Murder Do Us Part: Played with. His second wife died trying to go for his drug stash with them both going at each other with knives, but it was in a courthouse and there was a judge present, with them getting legally divorced during the fight.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Swifty is gleefully murderous and insane, but he’s an ally of our heroes.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: Swifty’s response to Liam threatening to shoot him is that he would enjoy it.

    Gooey

Gooey

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gooey.png
"You're a real soft squishy little bear aren't you?"
Race: Melted Chocolate

One of Saccharina's loyal guardians, and her chief marauder.

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Loads with Theobald. It reaches the point that Saccharina jokingly commands Gooey to have sex with Theobald so that they can both go back to focusing on their jobs.
  • Do You Want to Copulate?: When she finds her attempts to intimidate and threaten Theobald are received more eagerly than she expected, she quickly changes tracks to trying to hook up with him.
  • Expy: Her facial scars and morally ambiguous nature make her one for The Hound.
  • Family of Choice: Views Saccharina and her inner circle as that.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Half of her face has been melted off.

    Jon Bon

Jon Bon

"Jon Bon Bon Jon."
Race: Bon-Bon

One of Saccharina's loyal guardians.

The Dairy Islands

    In General

    Annabelle Cheddar

Captain Annabelle Cheddar

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/captain_annabelle_cheddar.png
"Your highness, my thighs ARE weapons."
Race: Cheddar Cheese

The former heir to House Cheddar, and currently the captain of the ship The Colby.

  • Disinherited Child: Was next in line for the throne, but she refused to marry and was thus stripped of her title.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: Has a very "princely" look with short, swept back hair.
  • Pirate Girl: The captain of her own ship to boot.
  • Rebellious Princess: The former heir to the Diary Islands, she went against her responsibilities in a way Jet and Ruby have only dreamed of.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Primsy Coldbottle. Gets absolutely furious when Theobald implies she might have been scheming behind her back.

    Primsy Coldbottle

Duchess Primsy Coldbottle

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duchess_primsy_coldbottle.png
"You’ve struck me! Why have you done this?"
Race: Bottle of Milk

The current ruler of the Dairy Islands, and Captain Annabelle Cheddar's cousin.

  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Only 16 years old and a sovereign ruler, making her younger than either of the Rock twins or Liam.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The kind and naïve duchess ends up dating the vengeance-obsessed, angsty Liam.
  • Loophole Abuse: Actually inverts this. She points out that, because Amethar was named Emperor of Concrdia by the previous Emperor, then it doesn't matter if he was stripped of his title and excommunicated from the Bulbian church, as the Emperor doesn't need to be a noble or a member of the church in order to be Emperor.
  • Naïve Everygirl: By far the nicest NPC in a campaign full of backstabbing and political intrigue. This also blindsides her when she's nearly assassinated by her betrothed.

    Manta Ray Jack

Manta Ray Jack

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/manta_ray_jack.png
"I guess she grew tired of me. And let me know with the sharp end of a knife. But that's love."
Race: Monterey Jack cheese

The Man-At-Arms of House Cheddar, and a loyal war companion of King Amethar.

  • Anthropomorphic Food: A walking block of cheese.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He's a rough, jovial old warrior.
  • Large Ham: Has a loud and explosive nature.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: His capture and torture by the Bulbian Church signals how grim the situation has become.
  • Torture Always Works: Averted. Calroy Cruller had him tortured for four straight days but he never gave up any information. Then they remembered that they had a magical book that they could use to compel him to speak the truth.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Mentioned offhandedly that Amethar had "a girl stashed away in the Dairy Isles" at a banquet, referring to Amethar's wife, Catherine Ghee, with whom he never properly annulled their marriage. This tipped off Calroy Cruller, who tortured him for the information, and used it to get Amethar stripped of his title and the Candian throne.

    Stilton Curdeau

Lord Stilton Curdeau

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Stilton Blue Cheese

A Dairy nobleman, whose vows to the Bulbian Church get in the way of his intended courtship of Duchess Coldbottle.

  • Big Bad Wannabe: Through schemes and ambushes, he almost succeeded in assassinating King Amethar and Duchess Coldbottle, intending to pave his way to Lord of the Dairy Islands and then Concordant Emperor, but as soon as he appears onscreen as a threat, he's quickly dispatched by Jet with a couple hits, showing how severely outclassed he was.
  • The Bluebeard: It's painfully obvious for everyone, except Primsy, that he plans to kill her to inherit her position. Of course, he proceeds to do so, but is stopped by the intervention of House Rocks.
  • Klingon Promotion: He murdered his own siblings to become the heir of House Bleu. He intended to do the same to Duchess Coldbottle, after marrying her.

    Catherine Ghee (Major Unmarked Spoilers)

Catherine Ghee

Played by: N/A

Race Unknown (preseumably butter)

Amethar's first wife and Saccharina's mother, a commoner in the Dairy Isles who married Amethar during the Ravening War.

  • Dead All Along: It's revealed that she has been dead for well over a decade by the time the main events of the plot took place.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: It's strongly implied that she and Amethar barely knew each other before they were married, and that it was an incredibly impulsive affair.
  • The Ghost: Never appears in person, not even in flashbacks.
  • The Paranoiac: She was convinced that the Candians sent to find her were planning on killing her. It's never made clear why she believed this.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Inverted. The revelation that she died shortly before Amethar and Caramelinda were married deals a crippling blow to the plans of the Big Bad Ensemble.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: In the extreme. She never even makes an appearance in the story, not even in flashbacks, but she is one of the most important characters to the narrative.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her continued evasion of Candian envoys sent to find her ended up causing a huge amount of problems for the Main Characters, and enabled the Big Bad Ensemble to enact their plans.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her entire existence is a massive revelation and a huge twist in the story.

Ceresia

    In General

    Constano Grissini

Commander Costano Grissini

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/commander_constano_grissini.png
Race: Breadstick

Imperial Commander of the Ceresian troops.

  • Anti-Villain: Type IV. He doesn't have any villainous qualities, but he still opposes our heroes and follows the corrupt Bulbian Church and equally-vile Ciabatta's orders.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Arrives to save the House of Rocks and their entourage when they're ambushed by brigands on the Sucrosi Road.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Amathar impales him with Payment Day down the hilt during the attack on Castle Candy.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: A noble, professional commander of the Ceresian troops. He takes personal responsibility for his squad's successes and failures.

    Senator Augustus Ciabatta

Senator Augustus Ciabatta

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/augustus_ciabatta.png
"It's goooooood."
Race: Ciabatta

The Senator of Ceresia.

  • Affably Evil: He's a pretty pleasant fellow to talk to, but that doesn't mean he's not an absolutely ruthless politician.
  • Big Bad Triumvirate: With Pontifex Belizabeth and Lord Cruller.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He initially presents himself as an ally to the Candians and helps Ruby and Jet get information on Archbishop Alfredi. However, this turns out to be part of his plan to become the Imperator of Ceresia, after which he betrays the Rocks family by assassinating Jet and invading Candia to consolidate his power.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Out of the three Big Bads of the season, he's the Fighter, both in combat and politics. He uses Ceresia's and his own military might to take power for himself, and though we do not know his class, it was stated that he used to be a gladiator.
  • Hero Killer: Schemes with Calroy to betray the Candian royal family in their own home town, and fatally stabs Jet.
  • Karmic Death: He killed Jet by stabbing her with a watersteel dagger; her twin sister, Ruby, later kills him the same way.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Senators, in any case, but he's not above getting his own hands dirty for the betterment of his country.
    • As the princesses learn, this includes attempting to assassinate members of a rival noble family directly.

    Archbishop Fettucina Alfredi

Race: Fettuccine Alfredo

The Ceresian Primogen for the Bulbian Church.

  • Alchemy Is Magic: Averted but Invoked. She uses alchemy to fake having magical power bestowed upon her by the Bulb.
  • Blackmail: Documents are found in her lab that prove she was blackmailing multiple people to rise to power.
  • Killed Offscreen: Executed by the Bulbian Church in-between episodes.
  • Fake Wizardry: She fakes her magical powers with alchemy to fool people into thinking her gifts are miracles of the Bulb.
  • Phony Psychic: She is one.
  • Prophet Eyes: An indicator of the sacred power she possesses. Except it's fake.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Presumably why the Church has her hanged.

"This is Fructera, I am dressed for court."
Race: Grape

The daughter of Gustavo, and the sovereign of Fructera.

  • Big Bad Wannabe: It is obvious she will be installed as Empress once the takeover of Calorum is complete. However, her actual role in said takeover is minimal; her only real contribution is beginning the coup by luring Amethar into Brassica's trap. Otherwise, her screentime consists of nothing but humiliating defeats and a quick, unceremonious, death.
  • Eye Scream: Gets iced by Liam through both eyes.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Played Amethar like a fiddle while conspiring with his enemies from the Church.
  • Master of None: Noted to be skilled in everything she does, but not the best at anything, explaining her humiliating defeat in the jousting competition.
  • Passed-Over Inheritance: Due to the laws of the Concord, Plumbeline is unable to inherit the throne from her dying father despite being well suited for the job.
  • Warrior Princess: Dons full armor to participate in the joust and in the final battle.

    Viscount Thaddeus Strongpit

Viscount Thaddeus Strongpit

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/thaddeus_strongpit.png
Race: Avocado

A childhood love of Jet. He didn't age well.

  • Hidden Depths: In the Adventuring Party for the finale, Brennan says that he gave up on a romantic connection with Jet, instead changing his focus to training in all sorts of unarmed martial arts to clean Liam's clock in revenge for getting knocked out.
  • Humiliation Conga: He stays in an alley without sleeping after Jet tells him to go there in order to get laid. After several days of sleep deprivation, he's knocked out by a punch from Liam and is robbed of his carriage by Jet and Ruby.
  • Prince Charmless: Despite his royal station, he comes off as a hopeless idiot who's desperate to court Jet.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Was apparently charming during his childhood. Not so much anymore.

Vegetania

    In General

    Pontifex Belizabeth Brassica

Pontifex Belizabeth Brassica

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/belizabeth_brassica.png
Race: Broccoli

Pontifex Rex of the Bulbian Church.

  • Big Bad Triumvirate: With Imperator Ciabatta and Lord Cruller.
  • Expy: Clearly modeled after Queen Elizabeth I.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Liam kills her during the Final Battle; however, he then has her resurrected, and she's forced to live out her life as a monastic prisoner.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: Out of the three Big Bads of the season, she's the Mage, whether in combat or politics. She uses the principles of the Bulbian Faith (as well as a handful of magical items) to get what she wants from people. She's also a Celestial Warlock of the Bulb.
  • High Priest: The undisputed leader of the Bulbian Church.
  • Lured into a Trap: She tricks King Amethar into placing his hand on the Book of Saint Citrina, a book that compels anyone touching it to tell the truth, and having him reveal that his first marriage to a commoner from the Dairy Islands was never annulled. As a result, his marriage to the Queen of Candia is a false one, and as an oathbreaker, Amethar is excommunicated from the Bulbian Church - making him ineligible to hold the title of King. Cue ambush as the forces of the Concord attempt to seize them.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: As pointed out by Primsy Coldbottle, her excommunication of Amethar and the subsequent stripping of his nobility... doesn't actually matter with regards to his position as the Emperor, as the emperor does not need to be a noble or a member of the Bulbian Church. Of course, she conveniently ignores this so that she can step in and serve as an "interim" ruler of the Empire.
  • This Cannot Be!: Utters this almost word-for-word in the final battle, as the players and their allies claim victory.
Belizabeth: How can this be? How can any of this be?

    Sir Keradin Deeproot

Sir Keradin Deeproot

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sir_keradin_deeproot.png
Race: Carrot

A loyal paladin of the Bulbian Church.

  • Arch-Enemy: To Liam, after he kills Preston in the battle at the cathedral of St. Arugula. However, the relationship appears to be rather one-sided on Liam's end, as Keradin doesn't seem to have a greater axe to grind with Liam than any of the other protagonists.
  • Church Militant: A devoted soldier of the Bulb.
  • The Dragon: To Belizabeth.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Liam kills him during the Final Battle; however, Liam then has Keradin resurrected, and he's forced to live out his life as a monastic prisoner.
  • Hero Killer: Mercilessly executes Lapin and Peppermint Preston.
  • The Paladin: His golden armor and righteous devotion make him a textbook case.
  • Red Baron: He gains the title "Mace of the Faith" during the campaign against Candia.
  • The Stoic: Barely shows emotion. The only times he does is when Chancellor Lapin tricks him into thinking he's The Mole so Deeproot will expose his co-conspirators, and when Liam finally breaks his resolve in the final battle by telling him the Bulb and the Hungry One don't consider him, reducing the once resolute knight to a fearful wreck who dies ignominiously to him.
  • Undying Loyalty: He is a devout servant to The Bulb and Pontifex Belizabeth Brassica, who's likely never taken any action that wasn't commanded by them.

The Meatlands

    In General
  • Fantasy Counterpart Culture: Roughly based on Siberian tribes.
  • Hufflepuff House: The Meatlands are the only major region of Calorum that is not directly involved in the central conflict of the campaign and has no major characters associated with them. By contrast, the protagonists are from Candia, their closest allies are from the Dairy Islands, Vegetania and Ceresia are home to two villains in the Big Bad Triumvirate and their associated armed forces, and Fructera is home to the dying Concordant Emperor, putting it at the center of most of the campaign's political intrigue.

    Basha Myaso

Basha Myaso

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/basha_myaso.png
Race: Beef

The big, beefy warlord of the beef clans.

  • The Brute: Big, angry, and ready for a fight.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Myaso is Russian for "meat".
  • The Paranoiac: While he’s wrong, in a world as cutthroat as Calorum, his theory that the Candians set up the Dairy bandit attack on the road to discredit the Meatlanders is... fairly justified, all things considered.

Deities

    The Bulb

The Great Bulb

The deity of the dominant monotheistic religion in Calorum.

  • God Is Neutral: Seems indifferent to the plight and machinations of Calorum.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: The symbol of the bulb is a golden icon of The Bulb on a white field.
  • Sentient Cosmic Force: Is described to be less of an active deity and more of a cosmic entity that happens to be worshipped. Except, in Episode 6, it is revealed to be mindless.

    The Hungry One

The Hungry One

An apocalyptic, devil-like entity who the Bulbian Church believe to be the cause of suffering in the world.

    The Sugar-Plum Fairy

The Sugar-Plum Fairy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_sugar_plum_fairy.png
"I will caution you this: There are dark forces at work. Be wary. Boldness will be required in the days to come, Lapin."

The Sugar-Plum Fairy is a protector and guardian spirit of Candia. She is a celestial spirit of the Sweetening Path, an animistic religion within Calorum. She derives her power from the Bulb.

  • Angelic Abomination: Her true form bares a distinct resemblance to the depiction of Biblical cherubs, with countless wings and multiple faces that shift with her emotions. Fittingly, Brennan confirms (via Liam's Favored Foe ability) her creature type as Celestial.
  • An Ice Person: Befitting her name, her magic has some connections with cold and ice, and her temple is located in the highest, coldest parts of the Stone Candy Mountains. During the party's battle with her, she fires barrages of Rays of Frost in-between turns, and can manipulate the frozen interior of her temple to drop massive icicles on the heroes.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: The Sugar-Plum Fairy is a mysterious being whose ultimate goal is simply trying to avoid the unfortunate fate of the rest of the spirits of the Sweetening Path by hiding all of Candia's magic away and hoarding it to herself. Unfortunately, this includes people with magic - such as Ruby - so she uses her mortal followers to subtly manipulate events to lure those people to her. She doesn't intend to harm the Candians who walk the Sweet Road, and it seems they enter a pleasant magical afterlife within the mists; however, she doesn't seem able to comprehend why Ruby would get so upset with her for planning out the deaths of several of her friends and family to maneuver her into position.
  • The Chessmaster: The Sugar-Plum Fairy, through the mortal workings that were under her command, has been steering House Rocks into ruin and planned out the deaths of Lapin and Jet so Ruby would be desperate enough to follow the Sweet Road into the Temple of Ice Cream. However, she didn't realize just how mad Ruby would be about her being partly responsible for Jet's death.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Her true form is a huge, nightmarish, swirling mass of faces and wings.
  • Ethnic Goddess: The native Candian deity before the Bulb.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: She appears as a small, harmless, insect-like fairy to put people at ease.
  • "Get Back Here!" Boss: Her boss fight takes place over a Bottomless Pit with several levitating ice-cream plinths being the only source of sure footing, meaning that a sizeable portion of the fight is spent just maneuvering around the field so that the party's melee fighters can close the distance with her. To counterbalance this, her HP is relatively low for a fight with a 9th-level party.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: She manipulates events throughout the campaign so that Jet would be killed and Ruby would ultimately come to her temple. Ultimately, Ruby is the one to land the killing blow on her, using Jet's own sword to do so.
  • Light Is Not Good: She appears as a bright pink-and-purple fairy creature, and the magic she grants Lapin has a similarly vibrant glow, but there's strong implications that her goals do not align perfectly with those of House Rocks. When it comes down to it, she's not exactly evil, but she is incredibly selfish and callous to the loss of innocent lives.
  • The Old Gods: Explicitly stated to be a Pagan deity who's lost influence to the Bulb. The party's visit to the Ice Cream Temple reveals that there used to be other Sweetening Path spirits like her, but they gradually lost their magic and faded away as the Candians stopped believing in them.
  • We Have Reserves: Downplayed but she implies that she knew her follower, Lapin, was going to die and saw it as a necessary loss to begin manipulating Ruby into being tempted to walk down the Sweet Path into the Sugar Plum Fairy's mists.
