The Three Great Angels (or Celestial Digimon) are a trio of Mega-level Angel Digimon to protect the Digital World's central "Kernel", the domain of its "God". It's rumored that Lucemon's abilities were split amongst the three.

It should also be noted that Digimon Adventure: (2020) implies them to be part of a larger group of seven Holy Digimon, similar to the Seven Great Demon Lords, which includes Valdurmon, SlashAngemon, ClavisAngemon, and Rasielmon. However, such a group has not yet been properly established.

Shared Tropes:

  • Big Good: What they are to the other angel Digimon.
  • Celestial Paragons and Archangels: The most powerful and highest-ranked angel Digimon, said to be the personification of separate aspects of God. They're tasked with protecting the Kernel of the Digital World.
  • The Corruptible: Their morality is an extreme version of good, which apparently means they each have a side that can easily fall prey to evil impulses.
  • Evil Counterpart: Daemon is said to be a fallen Seraphimon, Lilithmon is a fallen Ophanimon, and Cherubimon (Evil) is a fallen Cherubimon (Good).
  • Our Angels Are Different: Two of them are heavily armored humanoid warriors, while the third is a bizarre cross between a jester and a rabbit with barely any obvious angelic elements.
  • Power Trio: The three high ranking Angel Digimon who protect the Digital World's Kernel and lead the Angel Army.
  • Redeeming Replacement: Intended to be as such for the fallen Lucemon. Actual results seem a little mixed; none of them, even at their worst, are full-on Omnicidal Maniacs like their predecessor, but the possibility of falling is still pretty high.
  • Repression Never Ends Well: The cause of Seraphimon and Ophanimon turning to ShadowSeraphimon and Falldown Mode respectively is their trying to bottle up their negative emotions. Seraphimon ends up falling, while Ophanimon goes insane.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: All three members each have their corrupted side: ShadowSeraphimon for Seraphimon, Ophanimon Falldown Mode for Ophanimon, and Cherubimon (Evil) for Cherubimon (Good).

    Seraphimon

Seraphimon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seraphimon_new_century.png
Debut: Digital Monster Card Game
Attacks: (Original) Seven Heavens, Kuchu Seven Heavens, Ascension Hallow, Divine Breaker, Excalibur, Heaven's Kick, Seven's Wheel, Final Heal, Testament; (Dub) Strike of the Seven Stars/Seventh Heaven/Seven Heavens, Aerial Seven Heavens, Hallowed Ascension/Rising Halo, Hallowed Knuckle/Divine Breaker, Excalibur, Heaven's Kick, Seven's Wheel, Full HP Cure, Rising Halo

A Seraph Digimon that is dressed in holy armor that shines silver, and possesses ten golden wings. As the highest-ranked being among Angel Digimon, it rules over them all. Although its true face and personality is hidden behind a mask and cannot be glimpsed, it is the being closest to the "Being of Good" called "God". It is told that when it descends for the final battle against evil beings, it will purify everything. Also, it is said that Demon, who fell to the Dark Area and became a Demon Lord Digimon, was originally a Seraphimon.

Seraphimon is the final evolution of Patamon, and is notably partnered with Takeru (T.K.) Takaishi. One is also partnered to Koh.

  • Fallen Angel: His corruption can lead to BlackSeraphimon/ShadowSeraphimonnote  and the Great Demon Lord of Wrath: Demon.
  • Glass Cannon: In every appearance it has made in the anime, Seraphimon is never depicted to be particularly durable.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: It has gold wings and silver-white armor platings.
  • Heavenly Blue: A good chunk of its armor is blue.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Its "Seven Heavens" attack fires seven super-heated holy energy orbs to destroy all evil around it.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Subverted. According to the flavor text, it is the highest-ranked angel, but across adaptations, its combat power is consistently on par with the averagely powerful Mega, and it's got a pretty spotty win-loss record.
  • Shock and Awe: Its Ascension Hallow and Divine Breaker, which calls down lightning and fires it from his fist, respectively.
  • Shown Their Work: Its attack — Seven Heavens — involves heat. The Seraphim (or Burning Ones) were consistently portrayed as fiery creatures.
  • The Worf Effect: Its incarnations tend to get this treatment quite often. It's gotten Worfed against Cherubimon, Arkadimon, and Mercuremon, just to name a few examples.

ShadowSeraphimon (BlackSeraphimon)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blackseraphimon_9.jpg
Attacks: (Original) Seven Hells, Testament; (Dub) Strike of the Seven Dark Stars/Seven Heavens, Shadow Starburst/Shockwave

A form of Seraphimon, the highest rank of Angel Digimon, whose concealed inner resentment tumefied and engulfed it in darkness. Its gold wings and armor have transformed ominously, and it is said that it will fall to a Demon Lord Digimon if this persists for long.

This version of BlackSeraphimon first appeared as the Mega form of Mercuremon, attained through the absorption of Seraphimon's data.

  • Characterization Marches On: The first time this form appeared, it was an alternate form of Mercurymon. Its Digimon Reference Book profile treats it more logically as an actual fallen form of Seraphimon.
  • Creepy Crosses: The diagonally-arranged cross on its chest is symbolic of it being a corrupted version of Seraphimon.
  • Energy Ball: "Seven Hells" involves firing these, just like Seraphimon's "Seven Heavens".
  • Evil Counterpart: To, of course, Seraphimon.
  • Fallen Angel: Classified as one. It's notable in that he's the only "Fallen Angel" version of one of the Three Great Angels that isn't portrayed as one of the angels themselves going crazy, unlike Cherubimon Vice and Ophanimon Falldown Mode. At least, not until Digimon Adventure: (2020) and even then, the corruption hadn't yet reached his mind.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: Demonic bat-wings, in contrast to Seraphimon's angelic-looking wings.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Resentment fueled Seraphimon's fall. Resentment of who or what is unclear.
  • Magic Missile Storm: Seven Hells is an Unholy Nuke version of Seraphimon's Seven Heavens, firing off seven orbs of darkness instead of light.
  • Non-Indicative Name: He's not actually black-colored at all.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted in Japanese; see the other BlackSeraphimon below. English materials play it straight, renaming this guy to ShadowSeraphimon in the Frontier dub while the English version of Digimon World 3 kept the other one as BlackSeraphimon.
  • Rule of Seven: Just like Seraphimon's "Seven Heavens", he's got "Seven Hells".
  • Shock and Awe: "Testament", in addition to the below use, can also be used to electrify the opponent with its body.
  • Taking You with Me: "Testament" has it sacrifice its own life to kill the enemy with scads of hellfire.
  • Unholy Nuke: Its most powerful attack is called Seven Hells.

BlackSeraphimon (DW3)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blackseraphimondw3_2742.png
Attacks: Seven Heavens

Another digimon named BlackSeraphimon, this digimon is a black-colored version of Seraphimon that appears in Digimon World 3. Since then, it hasn't appeared again.

    Cherubimon

Cherubimon

Cherubimon (Good)/(Virtue)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cherubimon_vice_new_century.jpg
Cherubimon (Evil)/(Vice)

Debut: Digimon Adventure 02: Vol. 1: Digimon Hurricane Landing!!/Vol. 2: Transcendent Evolution!! The Golden Digimentals
Attacks: Cherubimon (Good) (Original) Heaven's Judgement, Lightning Spear; (Dub) Storm of Judgement/Heaven's Judgement/Holy Hug, Lightning Spear
Attacks: Cherubimon (Evil) (Original) Heaven's Judgement, Lightning Spear, Final Judgement, Thousand Spear, Cherubi Mouth, Cherubi Finger, Dashing Cherubi Finger, Cherubi Press, Cherubi Hand, Dark Lightning; (Dub) Storm of Judgement/Holy Hug, Lightning Spear/Lightning Blast/Dark Spear, Terminal Judgement, Thousand Spears, Cherubi Mouth, Cherubi Finger, Dashing Cherubi Finger, Cherubi Press, Cherubi Hand, Dark Lightning

An Angel Digimon which has the appearance of a beast. It is one of the Three Archangel Digimon assigned the highest rank, just like the Seraph Digimon Seraphimon. Its primary duty is to defend the Digital World's "Kernel". Angel Digimon, which are positioned at the ultimate "Virtue", have the aspect of their being easily stained by its antithesis of "Vice" as a consequence of their extremity. It uses mighty lightning techniques, and their strike is thought to be divine punishment.

Cherubimon is the final evolution of Lopmon, and is the main antagonist of the first 02 movie where it was partnered to Wallace (Willis). The Vice form also served as the Big Bad for the first half of Digimon Frontier. The Virtue form is the Mega level of Shaochung Lee (Suzie Wong)'s Lopmon according to the D-Power line, and is less ambiguously partnered to Shuuji Kayama. Both versions are listed together due to their similar Reference Book profiles.

  • Angelic Beauty: A rare non-human example. Its design features innocent and warm colors extensively, geared to exude cuddliness.
  • Badass Adorable: It's a giant pink rabbit-angel. What's not to like? Obviously, much less so in its Vice form.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Inverted. Virtue has the black eyes.
  • "Blind Idiot" Translation: Its original dub name was "Kerpymon", a massive corruption of its romanized "Kerubimon".
  • Fallen Angel: The Vice form is a Fallen Angel Digimon, but it's still a Vaccine-type. It's not one you'll want to meet, however.
  • Fangs Are Evil: Its vice form shows off a mouth of jagged, pointy teeth.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: Secondary color scheme in Virtue form.
  • Magic Missile Storm: Cherubimon Vice's Thousand Spears is basically a rain of Lightning Spear attacks.
  • Palette Swap: Pink and white with gold highlights for Virtue, purple and green with blue highlighs for Vice. Their Digimon Reference Book profiles are exactly the same, with no difference between them besides their typing.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Primary color scheme in Virtue form.
  • Shock and Awe: It primarily uses lightning and thunder attacks, whether it is the Vice or Virtue iteration.
  • Shown Their Work: Cherubimon has a bestial appearance, similar to the biblical Cherubim; it isn't quite the four-faced Animalistic Abomination spoken of, mind you.
  • Spam Attack: Both forms have an attack called Heaven's Judgment, which rains lightning bolts on whatever they're attacking. Cherubimon Vice also has an attack called Thousand Spears, which is a Magic Missile Storm version of Lightning Spear.

Cherubimon (Good) X (Cherubimon (Virtue) (X-Antibody))

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cherubimon_virtuex.jpg
Debut: Digital Monster X Ver. 3
Attacks: Heaven's Judgment, Lightning Spear, Shocking Hug You

It accumulates endless light energy in its abdomen, and it seems that pure Digimon unleash their own latent abilities when hugged by Cherubimon. However, as for Digimon with wicked hearts, it replaces their evil spirit with light and they revert back into a Digitama from which they will emerge as a good Digimon.

  • Amplifier Artifact: The sphere on its abdomen is this for good Digimon.
  • Heavenly Blue: This form gains blue Tron Lines.
  • Holy Is Not Safe: Its Shocking Hug You attack purifies evil Digimon at the cost of reverting them to digi-eggs. If Cherubimon has given up on them, the attack obliterates them instead.
  • Tron Lines: It gains blue ones in this form.

Cherubimon (Evil) X (Cherubimon (Vice) (X-Antibody))

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cherubimon_vicex.jpg
Debut: Digital Monster X Ver. 2
Attacks: Heaven's Judgment, Lightning Spear, Darkness Prison

Endless dark energy has accumulated in its abdomen, and it has learned the art of accumulating darkness. Having been banished from its position as one of the Three Great Angels, it is filled with envy from losing the ultimate "Virtue" and hatred towards the world for causing its fall to this state.

  • And I Must Scream: Anyone caught by its "Darkness Prison" gets their consciousness stuck forever.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's now driven by envy from having lost its position as one of the Three Great Angels.
  • Tron Lines: This form has pink ones.

    Ophanimon

Ophanimon (Ofanimon)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ofanimon_new_century.png
Debut: Digital Monster Card Game
Attacks: (Original) Sefirot Crystal, Eden's Javelin, Air Eden's Javelin, Eden's Needle, Eden's Air; (Dub) Sefirot Crystal/Sephirothe Crystal/Sephirote Crystal/Sephirothic C, Shining Javelin/Eden's Javelin, Air Eden's Javelin, Eden's Needle, Eden's Air

An Ophan Digimon that is the final form of feminine Angel Digimon. She is one of the Three Archangel Digimon who protect the Digital World's core "Kernel" (God's domain), alongside Seraphimon and Cherubimon. As the Digital World's Holy Mother-like being, she imparts the loving and merciful side of God, while Seraphimon is the executor of the enlightened laws of God and Cherubimon is the guardian of God and its wisdom; each has their own duty.

Ophanimon is the final evolution of Tailmon, and is primarily partnered to Hikari Yagami (Kari Kamiya) in the PSP game and the anime reboot. Ophanimon is also partnered to Glare and acts as a co-commander of the Light Fang faction. In addition, Mirei Mikagura's Angewomon can become an Ophanimon.

  • All-Loving Hero: Her role is to impart the loving and merciful side of God. Doubles as The Heart.
  • Angelic Beauty: As the Jintrix art shows, she rates somewhere around stunning.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: The only explicitly female among the Three Archangels and her armor has an opening for her stomach.
  • The Corrupter: Inverted; Eden's Javelin radiates purifying light.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: There do actually exist male Ophanimon, such as in Digimon World 4.
  • Fallen Angel: She has a Falldown Mode like Lucemon. There is also Lillithmon, which is what Ophanimon becomes when she falls completely.
  • Gemstone Assault: Her Sefirot Crystals fires a number of crystals overflowing with holy light while keeping them in a formation resembling the sephirot.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: Along with Heavenly Blue and Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold.
  • Good Is Not Soft: While it is the member who represents God's love, it is not completely devoid of administering divine punishment. Once, an Angel Digimon commited a crime that incurred its wrath, leading Ofanimon to casting this Angel Digimon from heaven, who then became Cho-Hakkaimon.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Kinda comes with the territory.
  • Light 'em Up: Her Sefirot Crystals attack.
  • Magic Knight: Doubles as this and Red Mage, having a shield along with a lance, and a measure of magical abilities.
  • Red Mage: Doubles as this and Magic Knight, having both healing abilities and offensive magic.
  • Sadly Mythtaken: Zig-zagged. Despite an Ophan-type, it is a Winged Humanoid Angelic Beauty, whereas biblical Ophanim were Eldritch Abominations made out of interlocking wheels studded with eyes. Ophanimon's attire, however, makes bountiful references to biblical lore.
  • Shown Their Work: Zig-zagged. The Winged Humanoid motif is a far cry from the biblical Ophanim, who are more in the area of a Eldritch Abomination, but several elements of Ophanimon's version's designs allude to all three classes of the first sphere.
    • The wheels on her shoulders are how biblical Ophanimon were described to look. Don't have eyes, though.
    • Her helmet is adorned with the face of an eagle, the face of a bull, and the face of a lion (she herself provides the face of a human) like the biblical Cherubim.
    • Ophanimon Core (from Dawn / Dusk) is in whole cloth a reference to biblical Seraphim. For clarification, keep in mind that "Seraphim" means 'Burning Ones'.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only explicitly female member of the Three Great Angels.

Ophanimon X (Ofanimon (X-Antibody))

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ofanimonx.jpg
Debut: Digital Monster X Ver. 3
Attacks: Sefirot Crystal, Eden's Javelin, Holy Material, Eden's Lance

Its wings shine like crystals, and it is said that your heart will overflow with calm feelings just at first glance. The sight of it standing gently on top of a single wheel also highlights its elegance. The armor on its shoulders detaches and combines together to form a weapon called "Eden's Lance".

  • Instant Runes: Its Holy Material attack has it create several magic circles to fire holy energy from.
  • Weapon Twirling: It spins its lance to create the magic circles used in its Holy Material attack.

Ophanimon Falldown Mode (Ofanimon: Falldown Mode)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ofanimon_falldown.jpg
Debut: Digimon Jintrix
Attacks: Flame Hellscythe, Demon's Crystal

A form of Ophanimon that was so angry that it suppressed its own emotions and fell into madness. It swelled with anger at the world, where atrocious sins keep mounting no matter how many times they are purged, and it closed off its heart. In order to nip evil in the bud, it hunts whichever opponents it has judged to have become a barrier to justice, and tries to establish a world of what it recognizes as justice.

This form of Ophanimon has briefly been partnered to Hikari Yagami (Kari Kamiya).

Ofanimon Falldown Mode X (Ofanimon: Falldown Mode (X-Antibody))

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ofanimon_falldownx.jpg
Debut: Digital Monster X Ver. 2
Attacks: Flame Hellscythe, Demon's Crystal, Behead Slasher

It better equipped itself to take on multiple enemies all at once, such as by turning its Flame Hellscythe into a giant scythe engulfed in flames at both ends. Of note are the three "Behead Slashers" floating around it that help defend it from enemy attacks, as well as pursue the enemy and slice them apart. Not only that, their attack power rises significantly when they are enveloped in flames. Having gained the power to take on an entire army, it continues its extermination of the neverending threat to justice alone.

  • Attack Drone: Its Behead Slashers are used to block incoming attacks.
  • One 'Mon Army: Said to be able to take on an entire army.

Ophanimon Core (Ofanimon Core)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spr_ds_ophani_core.png
Attacks: Holy Destroy, Holy Slash, Volcano Napalm, AT Change!, Call Dramon

An Ophanimon that has been transformed by exposure to the Chrono Core. It is partnered to Glare, but only in Digimon World Dusk.

  • The Corruption: This version of Ophanimon is infected by the Chrono Core.
  • Flaming Sword: It wields a spear of fire.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Its Holy Destroy and Holy Slash attacks use holy power.
  • Hot Paint Job: Several parts of its armor have orange highlights in the shape of flames.
  • Hot Wings: Its wings are now either burning or made of fire in reference to the Seraphim.
  • Palette Swap: Its armor is a darker blue color with orange highlights with the exception of its shield, which retains the gold designs. Its faceplate is also entirely golden.
  • Playing with Fire: Its Volcano Napalm attack creates pillars of fire.
