Victorian London

    Juliet Collins 
The young daughter of a reverend who saw the premonition of Mornington Crescent's explosion leaving no survivors in the house. She was revived shortly after Bill threw her into the river to drown.
  • Final Girl: Survives Bill's assassination attempt on her thanks to getting rescued and revived in time.

    Bill Sangster 
A calm, wise, unassuming artist who may have more to him than meets the eye...
  • The Reveal: Who would've thought that the nice and kind artist would be Jack the Ripper? Juliet found out the hard way.

    Stewart Tubbs 
An antisocial autopsy surgeon working at the city's morgue.
  • Asshole Victim: How he dies is related to his profession. He wakes up amidst his autopsy while this lungs were yanked out and dies... and hardly anyone cares about it.
  • Dr. Jerk: Antisocial and very unpleasant to everyone, despite being a surgeon.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Is naturally horrified by what happened to Matthew, who was his friend to boot.
  • No Dead Body Poops: Averted. Steward Tubbs loosens his bowels after he's autopsied alive.
  • Not Quite Dead: Subverted. Stewart Tubbs was still alive, but no one realized it until after they cut him open, broke open his ribs, and pulled out his lung during the autopsy. Then he woke up, and subsequently died.

    Andrew Caine 
Hector Barnes' young student in Egyptology who is also partners with Mr. Stanley's wife, Jane Stanley.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Andrew was blinded by cobra venom shortly before many of them slithered over to him and bit him all over his body.
  • Eye Scream: Gets blinded by snake venom.

    Jane Stanley 
A wealthy and renowned Egyptologist who is also Norman Stanley's wife.
  • Tongue Trauma: Gets her tongue bitten by a snake and chokes to death.

    Hector Barnes 
A professional Egyptologist working together with Andrew Caine and Jane Stanley.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Get bitten on the wrist by a poisonous cobra. Considering the fates of his protégé and his wife, he got off easy.

    Matthew Upton 
An obese newspaper editor for The Clarion who was once a soldier fighting in Afganistan.
  • Fat Bastard: Downplayed. He isn't that pleasant but he does show more signs of being affected by the disaster than most of the others and some genuine interest in the topics he's reporting.
  • Intrepid Reporter: A newspaper editor who very eager about his job in reporting what's going on.
  • Kill It with Fire: He was impaled in the stomach by a pipe coated with chemicals that incinerated him from the inside-out.

Modern Times

    Patricia "Patti" Fuller 
A journalist for Borderlands Patrol and the girlfriend of Will Sax who saw the premonition of the train bombing.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Is prone to this, especially as more deaths take place and in her interactions with Jim.
  • Final Girl: She's the last of the survivors to die due to intentional self-overdose of anaesthesia, but then she gets revived.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Downplayed, but it's shown that Patti works out often, which works in her favour near the novel's end.

    Will Sax 
Patti's irresponsible boyfriend who is Circuit City's supervisor.

    Al Kinsey 
A pompous, hot-headed talent agent who seems to have some beef against Zack... but is surprisingly cool-headed when he's told Death will catch up to him.
  • Out with a Bang: He dies while getting a blow job and driving a car at the same time.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When he accepts the idea that Death's after him, he doesn't try to run or hide but just continues living his life.
  • Off with His Head!: Get decapitated when one of another car's hubcaps is knocked loose and comes flying at him through the windshield.

    Susan Fries 
Hal Ward's girlfriend who works as a mechanic.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Susan is burned to death when her chest was incinerated by thermite due to the static on her clothes. By the time Jim discovered her body, her heart, lungs, and part of the abdomen were charred beyond recognition.
  • Meaningful Name: Her surname "Fries" should have given the reader a dead giveaway.

    Zack Halloran 
The middle-aged president of his construction company. He seems to have something against Al...

    Hal Ward 
A demolition car driver who met Susan Fries while having his car fixed.
  • Black Dude Dies First: The first character to die and he's a black guy. He perishes when his foot gets caught in a root, a flash flood comes and the combination breaks his leg, causing him to drown.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Justified. Hal probably could swim, but his leg was broken and he was being bashed around by a motorbike underwater.

    Jim Castle 
An ATF agent and Lauren Castle's husband who's very eager to arrest the terrorists responsible for the bomb attack on the train, believing they were the culprits who were killing the survivors.
  • Police Are Useless: Subverted. He does a good job of pursuing the terrorists, it's just that this won't have any effect on saving them from Death, and there's little he can do that would.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He may be a little too determined to stop the supposed terrorists, but he's more than willing to ask for more info instead of jumping to conclusions on the "terrorist" plot. He also lets our main characters (or whoever's still alive) go after finding the actual terrorists.
