    Jericho Cross

Jericho Cross is the main protagonist of Darkwatch. Jericho is a jaded American Civil War deserter and drifter who became a gunslinger and train robber. During his "one last job," he releases Lazarus Malkoth from his prison in a failed attempt to steal the contents. While dueling with Lazarus, Jericho is bitten and infected by the vampire curse. He enlists the Darkwatch organization in search for Malkoth to exact his revenge and maybe reclaim his soul.
  • Anti-Hero: Even if played as a good guy, Jericho is a very dark and brooding individual who used to be a notorious outlaw, let the bullets do the talking and the entire events of the game are mostly his fault.
  • Ascended Demon: A good-aligned Jericho becomes an Ascended Vampire, as his good actions unlock holy powers that he can wield despite being undead. If taken all the way to the end, he becomes human again in the good path.
  • The Atoner: Most Jericho's missions for Darkwatch involve cleaning the mess he caused by hunting down creatures of the night that wouldn't have been rampaging the west had he not released Lazarus in the first place. Whether he is genuine or not is up to the player.
  • Badass Longcoat: He initially wears a tan duster, but trades it in for a Darkwatch-issue black leather one.
  • Dangerous Deserter: He deserted during the Civil War and is now a train robber.
  • Daywalking Vampire: Sunlight is not fatal to Jericho, but it does strip him of his vampire powers and render him mortal.
  • Double Jump: One of his vampire powers.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: He was already an excellent marksman before he was bitten.
  • Eyepatch of Power: He wears one over his left eye, which doesn't hinder his gunslinging one bit.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: If you play him like this, Jericho sucks out the infection of Lazarus' victims before they can turn into vampires and exorcises damned souls. He also gives quick clean deaths to Darkwatch regulators who have been infected.
  • Glowing Eyelights of Undeath: His scarred missing eye glows red, the source of his Vein-o-Vision. In the good ending, his eye glow dies, indicating he is human again. In the bad one, both eyes glow, indicating he has embraced vampirism.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: He has very prominent scarring over his left eye, which is gone.
  • The Gunslinger: Being the playable character of an FPS, that is a given.
  • Heroic Mime: Jericho never once utters a word in the game, except for pain grunts and death wails.
  • I Can Rule Alone: In the bad ending, Jericho kills Tala after helping secure ultimate power and goes on to rule the Old Wild West by himself.
  • I Do Not Drink Wine: He attempts to drink some stream water early on, but immediately throws it back up.
  • In a Single Bound: One of Jericho's neutral vampire powers is the ability to jump twice as high.
  • I Hate You, Vampire Dad: Regardless how you play him, Jericho wants Lazarus dead.
  • Karma Meter: Jericho can unlock specific powers from the way he can be played during moral choices.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: The whole mess throughout the game is kick-started by Jericho, who tries to rob a Darkwatch train... only to unleash Lazarus upon the world. Chapter 2's opening text sums it up best: "Nice going, outlaw. Your soul is slipping away, and Hell's own horsemen nip at your heels."

  • Retirony: This was supposed to be his last train robbery. But then he got turned into one of the undead.
  • Suck Out the Poison: What Jericho does to Lazarus' still-living victims if you choose to be good. Otherwise...
  • Vampire Refugee: He is pursuing Lazarus in the hopes of regaining his soul and maybe become human again.
  • Vein-o-Vision: One of his neutral powers is the ability to see in infra-red, being able to detect enemies, allies and special items.
  • Villain Protagonist: He can end up as this, if you chose it. It will end with him embracing the curse and replacing Lazarus as the new lord of vampires.
  • Weakened by the Light: Although sunlight doesn't harm him directly, standing in it will drain Jericho's Blood Shield and prevent him from using any abilities, including his Double Jump. Invoked in Cartwright's test and in the level where you retrieve the Deadlight Prism (standing within its aura allows Jericho to use his powers).

Orphaned when vampires slaughtered her parents, Cassidy Sharp was raised as a ward of the Darkwatch and trained to become an agent. To earn respect in a man's world, Cassidy had to ride, shoot, and fight as well as any man, and think faster than all of them. Haunted by visions of her family's massacre, Cassidy harbored deep doubts about her abilities and courage in the face of the supernatural — she overcompensated by being the most serious and idealistic agent in the Darkwatch organization and the creeping corruption that threatens to destroy it from within. She is introduced early in the game, attempting to stop Jericho from breaking Lazarus out of prison.

Tala, whose name means "Stalking Wolf," was born to an ancient line of Native American shamans. From a young age, Tala's innate ability to communicate with the spirits made her a misfit and an outcast from her own tribe. With her father murdered by treacherous fur traders, and her seer of a mother sent to die in a storm by her fearful tribe, Tala developed an intense distrust of others — not only for the white man, but also for those of her own tribe.

Captured and abused by the same traders who killed her father, Tala seemed doomed to meet an early end until an attack by vampires brought the traders' trail to a merciless end. Left for dead, Tala was rescued by Darkwatch Regulators on the trail of the vampire clan. The Darkwatch made Tala one of their own, but never suspected the truth — that Tala had resolved never to be powerless again, and that she'd use any means necessary to gain revenge on a world that had murdered her family.

  • All the Other Reindeer: In her backstory.
  • Big Bad: Ends up usurping the position after Lazarus is killed in both paths, being fought as the Final Boss in the good ending, while in the evil one, she shares the position with Jericho.
  • Dark Action Girl: Tala is much more darker and brutal compared to Cassidy. She goes even further down the line when she turns into a vampire.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Shunned by her tribe for her special powers, her family murdered and she is implied to have served as a Sex Slave by the people who left orphaned.
  • Evil Costume Switch: After becoming a vampire, she ditches her Spy Catsuit for a corset.
  • Face–Heel Turn: She tricks Jericho into making her a vampire and she sells out Darkwatch to Lazarus. Its not like she was that good to begin with.
  • Femme Fatale: To the point she will seduce a vampire into siring her so she could gain powers of her own.
    Tala: I played you Jericho. And you gave me what I wanted.
  • Final Boss: In the good path.
  • Freudian Excuse: Though not stated in the game itself.
  • Killed Off for Real: No matter what path you take, Tala always dies in the end by Jericho's hands. In the good path, she is killed as the final boss and in the evil path, he turns on her and kills her to keep Lazarus' power for himself.
  • Knight Templar: Her idea to save Hangtown after it has been corrupted is to put down everyone living in there.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Compared to Cassidy, who is more modestly dressed, Tala is shall we say... more open. She has also a sex scene with Jericho, where he turns her into a vampire.
  • Of Corsets Sexy: She wears this after becoming a vampire.
  • The Vamp: Figuratively speaking. She uses her feminine wiles to get her away and has almost no redeeming qualities. She proceeds to become this trope literally after being bitten by Jericho and goes on to become the Big Bad.
  • Winged Humanoid: She takes this form for her boss fight
  • We Can Rule Together: To Jericho, when she goes evil. In the evil ending, he decides I Can Rule Alone.

A Roman who first founded the Darkwatch society in 66 AD in order to battle the dark forces responsible for the decline of the Roman Empire. He eventually got possessed by a demon and himself became a powerful vampire and turned on the organization he founded, raising an undead army to aid him in his task. The Darkwatch then pursued Lazarus across Europe and later America. He is released by Jericho at the start of the game, unleashing a curse of the damned upon the Old West and also siring Jericho in the process.
  • Ancient Evil: Lazarus is a Roman from ancient times in a Old West setting.
  • Big Bad: Of the game, and likely the entire setting. Subverted, since he is disposed before the proper climax.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: His reason for letting Jericho live in the beginning of the game.
  • Daywalking Vampire: Downplayed. When fusing with the Deadlight Prism, which allows vampires to walk freely during daytime, he presumably gains this ability too. However, Jericho kills him shortly afterwards before he can display it.
  • Demonic Possession: In his backstory.
  • Evil Laugh
  • Evil Overlord: He sets up shop in a town that he corrupted into a Mordor-esque setting, complete with flowing lava and teeming with demons.
  • Fallen Hero: He was Darkwatch founder, who created the organization to fight vampires who had brought down the Roman empire.
  • Final Boss: Subverted. It looks like he is the last confrontation in the game, but after Jericho kills him, Tala steals his powers and escapes. Alternatively, if Jericho chopses the evil option and takes the power for himself and becoming the new vampire lord, Cassidy turns on him and becomes the final boss.
  • Flunky Boss: He repeatedly summons his undead minions to aid him in his boss fights to distract Jericho, but also to serve as health kits to Jericho to heal himself and recharge his powers.
  • Implacable Man: Even Cassidy admits that a train derailing will stop him for long.
  • Large Ham: You know he is one when the game's subtitles refer to his laughter as over the top.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Lazarus lures Jericho into pursuing him and joining up to the Darkwatch so that could find and locate the Daylight Prism, a artifact that allows vampires to walk under the sunlight.
  • Neck Lift: Lazarus is fond of lifting people by the neck in most of his appearances.
  • One-Winged Angel: After fusing with the Daylight Prism, he turns into a monstruous abomination even more powerful than before.
  • Our Founder: To the Darkwatch, having formed it himself to fight the vampires that conquered Rome. However, he is not viewed positively by them given he went to become an even greater evil.
  • Playing with Fire: Lazarus summons hellfire during his boss fights.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: He was briefly captured by Darkwatch in prior to the game's start.
  • Shock and Awe: Lazarus also shoots lightning strikes and pillars.
  • Teleport Spam: He does this during his first boss fight.
  • Vampire Monarch: He is the evil master vampire whose presence keeps the Curse of the West alive and killing him will restore Jericho back to normal and put the dead back to sleep.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Lazarus is shirtless in all his appearances. Given his body is grey-skinned and has a large cross marking in his chest, its not a pretty sight to behold.

The brutal and scheming field commander of the Darkwatch in the rank of Brigadier General. A American Civil War veteran, Cartwight snipes Jericho and enslaves him, forcing him to participate in a series of trials before inducting him into the organization.
  • Big Good: To the Darkwatch organization. For a given value of "good".
  • Good Is Not Nice: Justified because you are a vampire (the kind of creature he and his organization are sworn to destroy) and he thinks you are responsible for Cassidy's death.
  • Jerkass: Cartwright is quite a dick to Jericho, referring to him as "half-breed", constantly remind him of his failures and forcing him to go into the monster-infested sewers.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Cartwright's attitude towards Jericho is not unjustified, considering the fact that Jericho's attempt to rob a Darkwatch train is what unleashed Lazarus in the first place.
  • Knight Templar: He is not above breeding or using monsters to serve the Darkwatch's ends. With that said, its implied he draws the line at murdering civilians such as the Hangtown incident, where its noted he won't like hearing that the townspeople were purged by Darkwatch agents after the city was invaded by vampires.
  • Red Herring: Some of Cassidy's comments imply that something is wrong with Clay since he is breeding monsters in secret and is exceptionally cruel (with her claiming that this wasn't the same man she knew). We never figure out what happens since he disappears from the plot without a trace.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Cartwright's fate is unknown after Lazarus' attack on Darkwatch Citadel.

Jericho's loyal undead steed. It was Jericho's very first victim when he succumbed to the blood lust and turned him into a hellish creature.

  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: They only know to charge at their enemies, only dynamite and explosive crossbows are capable of making them run away from you even if temporarily.
  • Dual Wielding: Reapers are always using a pair of cleavers or scythes.
  • Mooks: Most common enemy in the game.
  • Machete Mayhem/Sinister Scythe: The common weapon wielded by the Reapers.

  • Machete Mayhem: Dual-wielded cleavers no less. Its not advised to fight them up close.
  • Zombie Puke Attack: Even though they are slow, they puke toxic waste to hit enemies from a distance.

Banshees

  • Our Banshees Are Louder: They were undead prostitutes that have the ability to float in the air and scream energy bolts at their enemies.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: Their attacks are scream-based energy that are able to block gun fire.
  • Turns Red: They become even more dangerous after dealing enough damage and taking out both their arms, they start floating erratically in the air and firing shouts non-stop.

    Braves

  • Archer Archetype: Rather than using guns, they use bow and arrow for ranged attacks.
  • An Axe to Grind: In melee combat, they utilize tomahawks like they did in life.
  • The Savage Indian: Braves are massacred natives that were reanimated by the Curse of the West and driven by an insatiable desire for vengeance against the injustice they suffered.

    Banditos

  • Bandito: Naturally. They are undead ones of course.
  • Dumb Muscle: They are considered slow and stupid as they were in life, but they are great melee fighters.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: They use exclusively this type of weapon and its a main reason why they shouldn't be engaged on melee.
