Deities

    Gwyn

Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight/Lord of Cinder

Click here to see Gwyn, Lord of Cinder
Leader of the Lords, King of Anor Londo, and father of the Gods of Light. He led the Age of Fire, ruling over man from Anor Londo in Lordran. His Lord Soul granted him power over Sunlight and Lightning.

  • Bolt of Divine Retribution/Shock and Awe: What he used against the ancient stone dragons to pierce their scales. While he uses this in the True Final Boss fight against him, you can acquire up to three spells to use this yourself, the third version requiring Gwyn's Soul to obtain it.
  • Call-Forward: The theme that plays when you fight him as the Lord of Sunlight is called Soul of Cinder, which the titular boss uses a souped up version of his moveset in Dark Souls III.
  • Destructive Savior: Potentially. Gywn's actions to prevent the fading of the First Flame saved the world as we know it, but the world wasn't exactly in great shape and has only gotten worse. Ultimately it's a matter of personal opinion whether it would have been better or worse to simply let everything end. People's lives are now full of oppressive misery and despair, but are they so bad it would have been better that they had never been born? This comes back to bite him back during his time as the Lord of Sunlight, as the Chosen Undead under Velka's pact slays him for his sins.
  • Fatal Flaw: Gywn had a fierce fear of the end coming to his kingdom and works. Much of Gywn's impact on the world was born of his desire to stave off the end as long as possible. In particular, his fear of the Dark as the harbinger of that end spurred a lot of his actions, for good or ill. This is perhaps why Velka considers him a sinner, as his fear of the dark unintentionally turned Lordran into the Crapsack World it is.
  • Final Boss: Defeating him leads you to start a new gameplay cycle. If you've made a pact with Velka, you can fight his Lord of Sunlight form as the True Final Boss.
  • God Is Dead: After Gwyn's departure for the Kiln of the First Flame, Anor Londo began to see a shift in leadership, with nearly every deity leaving Lordran save for Gwyndolin. He is not met until the very end of the final dungeon, where it turns out he has become Hollow as a result of burning in the Kiln all this time. And his Lord of Sunlight form can even be potentially killed by you under certain circumstances.
  • Leitmotif: "Gwyn, Lord of Cinder", a melancholic piano piece that initially doesn't sound fitting for a Final Boss, but makes sense once you learn about what motivates him still despite his age-long suffering. When fighting him as the Lord of Sunlight, it becomes Soul of Cinder.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Gwyn is unbelievably fast, unrelenting, powerful, and deadly with his greatsword, traits that are put on display in the player's final fight against him. His Lord of Sunlight form is also this, but is also more dangerous.
  • Master Swordsman: The only one who can come even close to rivaling him is Artorias. He shows you just how dangerous he can be with it when you fight him in both Lord of Cinder and Lord of Sunlight form.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: While Lord Gwyn is heavily implied to have unintentionally caused most of the problems that plague Lordran, banishing Jar-Eel to the north prevented the full eradication of the Darkwraiths as the Sealers intended.
  • Removed Achilles' Heel: His True Final Boss fight as the Lord of Sunlight cannot be parried.
  • True Final Boss: Completing a lengthy sidequest allows you fight Gwyn as the Lord of Sunlight.

    Nito

Gravelord Nito

The first of the dead, a literal mountain of corpses, and Leader of the Gravelord Servant Covenant. His Lord Soul granted him power over Death, and he functions as the Grim Reaper. After the great war against the dragons, he was content with laying dormant in his domain while death and misery spread over Lordran. Nito himself resides in a massive coffin deep within the Tomb of the Giants.

  • Body of Bodies: A giant skeleton that is made up of other skeletons.
  • Dem Bones: Is a giant skeleton wearing armour made from other skeletons.
  • Dual Boss: Is fought alongside Gravedaughter Ciaran upon failing certain conditons.

    Velka

Velka

The Goddess of Sin. It is her duty to oversee those who have sinned and administer the proper punishment.

  • Anti-Magic: Linked to Occult enchantments (the kind that are specifically designed to destroy gods and divine servants).
  • Clever Crows: Most of her usable items are Intelligence-linked and found in a place with a lot of crows and crow-like beings. In fact, she's actually the crow that transported you to Firelink Shrine.
  • The Dreaded: Even the gods fear her, for not even they are above her judgment.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Velka has a heavy association with Dark, but nothing suggest that she's evil. If anything, she's a force of divine judgement upon wrongdoers as well as forgiveness to those who open themselves up to her. In fact, making a pact with her gives you the opportunity to punish sinners to open up a path to the True Final Boss.
  • Odd Job Gods: She's the goddess of sin — recording it, weighing it and righting it; be that, apparently, through retribution or atonement. At a price.
