Tropes shared by multiple characters
- The Atoner: The deceased members of Class 78 (with the exception of Junko), Jin, and Chisa all feel horrible for their role in The Tragedy.
- Dead Person Conversation: They're able to temporarily enter the land of the living and talk to those that can hear them.
- Dream Walker: As seen with some of its residents, they're able to hop into the dreams of the living to communicate with them.
- Healthy in Heaven: According to Kaito in Chapter 2 of "Momoharu Week 2022!", a person's spiritual form becomes whatever age they were when they were at their prime.
- Mundane Afterlife: From what's shown in the afterlife, it's mainly everyone living in their assigned dorms and watching what the living are doing.
Afterlife Theater
Class 78
Sayaka Maizono
Sayaka Maizono
The former Ultimate Pop Sensation.- Casting Couch: Thankfully, a more downplayed example. When she first started auditioning in the idol business, she met an agent who helped her put her foot in the door in exchange for nude photos for a porno magazine.
- Shipper on Deck: Along with Aoi, she tried to get Makoto and Kyoko together in their time at Hope's Peak.
Leon Kuwata
Leon Kuwata
The former Ultimate Baseball Star.- Heterosexual Life-Partner: He was this to Makoto prior to the Killing Game.
- Kissing Cousins: In a literal example of this trope, his First Kiss was with his cousin Kanon. Though, in his defense, it was more that Kanon cornered him and forced a kiss onto him.
Chihiro Fujisaki
Chihiro Fujusaki
The former Ultimate Programmer.- Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones: While he's one of the nicest people in Class 78, even he's willing to enjoy some popcorn while Junko's convulsing on the ground.
Mondo Owada
Mondo Owada
The former Ultimate Biker Gang Leader.- Loophole Abuse: When he threatens to punch Junko, she points out his Wouldn't Hit a Girl rule. He then says that since they're all dead, they're all equals and that no damage he would inflict would be permanent.
Kiyotaka Ishimaru
Kiyotaka Ishimaru
The former Ultimate Moral Compass.- Serious Business: His biggest secret was that he cheated on a test in elementary school, something that he fears that his opponent would use in a smear campaign if he ran for Prime Minister.
- So Proud of You: He admits that he's proud of his brother Kiyoki becoming Police Chief.
Hifumi Yamada
Hidumi Yamada
The former Ultimate Fanfic Creator.- Everyone Has Standards; While he can be perverted, he does draw a line on watching the six-year-old Kiki change into her gym clothes.
- Irony: A passionate Otaku like himself used to hate anime and manga until he got into Princess Piggles.
Celestia Ludenberg
Celestia Ludenberg (Taeko Yasuhiro)
The former Ultimate Gambler.- Only Known by Their Nickname: This becomes downplayed after her death. While she still prefers to be called "Celeste", she doesn't mind being called by her real name.
Sakura Ogami
Sakura Ogami
The former Ultimate Martial Artist.- Reformed Bully: Surprisingly for someone like her, she used to be a bully. It wasn't until she met Kenshiro that she became the honorable woman that everyone knows her as.
- You Shall Not Pass!: She will hold Junko back if Mukuro is occupied.
Mukuro Ikusaba
Mukuro Ikusaba
The former Ultimate Solder.- Ain't Too Proud to Beg: In "Mukuro’s Redemption!", she falls to her knees and cries begging for Makoto and Kyoko's forgiveness.Mukuro: “Y…you’re right…you have every right to hate me, and I don’t deserve your forgiveness for what I’ve done…but I’m BEGGING FOR IT!”
- Cain and Abel: The Abel to Junko's Cain.
- Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: While her former classmates and headmaster couldn't condone what she's done with Junko, they're ultimately willing to admit that she's one of Junko's victims too and are willing to forgive her.
- You Shall Not Pass!: She's the main one keeping Junko from going to the land of the living to haunt the Naegis.
Junko Enoshima
Junko Enoshima
The former Ultimate Despair and the mastermind behind The Tragedy.- Cain and Abel: The Cain to Mukuro's Abel.
- Hated by All: Considering the fact that she's the one who caused The Tragedy and is responsible for almost everyone dying (the exceptions being Fuhito and Hibiki), it would be surprising if everyone didn't hate her.
- Villainous Respect: In her own way, she respects Makoto for beating her during the Killing School Life, to the point that she promised herself that she would stop anyone from causing him despair since she couldn't. In "Korekiyo’s Despair!", she was willing to have Kiyo's soul torn apart by Monokumas for trying to kill Kiki until Mukuro stopped her.
Class 77
Chiaki Nanami
Chiaki Nanami
The former Ultimate Gamer and Class 77's class representative.- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In "Komaru and Hajime's Decision!", she encourages Hajime to pursue a relationship with Komaru instead of constantly morning her.Chiaki: Just because you love someone else, it doesn’t mean you’ll forget me. Cherish the memories we had together but make new ones with someone else. Even if I can’t be Player Two anymore, that doesn’t mean that I have to hog the controller all to myself. Let someone else be the new Player Two… be happy with Komaru, alright?
Chisa Yukizome
Chisa Yukizome
Class 77's former teacher and (unwilling) Remnant of Despair.- Affectionate Nickname: She tends to refer to both her class and Class 78 as "rotten little oranges".
The Kirigiris
Jin Kirigiri
Jin Kirigiri
Hope's Peak Academy's former headmaster and Kyoko's father. Hibiki Kirigiri
Hibiki Kirigiri (née Uzuchi)
Kyoko's mother.- Named by the Adaptation
- Small Role, Big Impact: "Hana's Surprise" reveals that she and Hana had met at the same clinic as the latter's reluctantly about to have an abortion. Hibiki's advice to Hana convinces her to keep and give birth to Makoto, which in turn leads to him growing up to stop the Tragedy.
Fuhito Kirigiri
Fuhito Kirigiri
Jin's father and Kyoko's grandfather.- I Have No Son!: He kicks Jin out of the family due to him not wanting to follow in his father's footsteps. In Chapter 7 of "Naegiri Week 2019", he does the same to Kyoko for the same reason, as well as for her wanting to take up Makoto's last name when they get married instead of staying a Kirigiri.Fuhito turned around, murmuring just loud enough for them to hear “I have no granddaughter.”
- This later gets Subverted in Chapter 2 of "Something Gained, Something Lost" after his death. In his will, he reveals that he regretted how he acted and apologizes to Makoto and Kyoko. He even added Kyoko and Jin back into the Kirigiri family, as well as add Makoto to it.
