Osatsu Kei

Super High-School Level Comedian

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gboxdwn_9.png

"Doing alright? Or are you dissociating as anyone else would in a situation like this? It's okay if you are, I'm seconds away from laying down and astral projecting myself to a new dimension, so I understand."

Osatsu Kei, the SHSL Comedian, is known for their dark comedy. Yet, with the rise of internet culture their style of humor has went from obscure to wildly popular.

  • A Bloody Mess: Subverted. Strawberry Jam spills onto Osatsu's uniform jacket when they were making strawberry tarts with Ootani during their guard shift in the first chapter.
  • Blush Sticker: Their sprites depict a permanent blush.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Played with. As they'll be the wise guy to Ootani's straight guy, but there are times where their positions will switch due to Ootani's airheadedness.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Is hinted at in the narration of one of Osatsu's posts during the Chapter 1 trial.
  • Extreme Omnivore: So long as it's consumable, Osatsu will eat it. And yes, that does include the skin of fruits, like lemons.
    • After finding Mukizu's dead body, they ran back to the kitchen and ate an entire orange while spacing out— with Ootani as their key witness.
  • Idiot Hair: One of the three characters with an ahoge, along with Komatsuzuki and Karina.
  • Odd Friendship: With Ootani.
  • Stepford Snarker: They're coping with the situation via Black Comedy.
  • The Gadfly: Makes sense, as they're a comedian.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Not so much sneaky as they are spacey.

Komatsuzaki Airi

Super High-School Level Shoujo Mangaka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bbzih85_0.png

Komatsuzaki Airi has been well known in the manga reading community long before being selected as the SHSL Shoujo Mangaka. Her current series is the long-running Shogi Queen.

Suzuki Hayato

Super High-School Level Audio Engineer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cpabqmp_8.png

Suzuki Hayato isn’t very well known by the public, but has made a name for himself among the music producing industry. This lead to him being selected as the SHSL Audio Engineer. He is one of the two victims of Chapter 3.

  • Black Bead Eyes: His eyes are drawn this way.
  • Eye Glasses: His glasses, paired with the above trope, do look like this.
  • Nerd Glasses: Wears big, round, thin-framed glasses.
  • No Social Skills: At least, based on his conversation in the gift shop with Osatsu, during which he stumbles over his words and knocks things over out of surprise.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Has on a neon-pink jacket.
  • The Klutz: The fact that Osatsu actually speaks to him causes Suzuki to knock an entire rack in the gift shop over, sending items flying everywhere.

Isayama Yaya

Super High-School Level Shrine Maiden

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5gtmyui_6.png

Isayama Yaya, the SHSL Shrine Maiden, is known among her community for being especially devoted to her shrine, taking it from a derelict structure to one of the most popular shrines in her prefecture.

  • Beauty Equals Goodness: The most kindhearted student is also the one who most closely adheres to traditional beauty standards.
  • Crash-Into Hello: Averted. Her first meeting with Ootani almost ends in disaster, but he manages to catch himself before it's too late.
  • Miko: She's a shrine maiden, so...
  • Tareme Eyes: Her round and soft eyes fit her kindhearted and motherly personality.
  • Team Mom: Isayama is probably the student who is the most concerned about her peers. When Yanagi revealed he had amnesia, Isayama's reaction was not unlike that of a worried parent, and during the Chapter One trial, she refrains from pointing the finger. She even sports the stereotypical "anime mom" hairstyle.
  • The Ingenue: She's incredibly soft-hearted and genuine.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Gives off this vibe, with her motherly nature.

Ishida Takane

Super High-School Level Golfer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c9ehsxz_9.png

Despite being the son of the CEO of Ishida Corporation, one of the largest business in Japan, Ishida Takane was actually selected to attend Hope’s Peak Academy as the SHSL Golfer. Although one might have expected him to excel in business or finance, he actually has a strong competitive golf career. He is one of the two victims of Chapter 3.

Hirase Marin

Super High-School Level Lifeguard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bw8jhnp_2.png

Hirase Marin is well known for her bubbly personality and being the life of the party among the many beaches of Okinawa. Besides that, she spends much of her time on lifeguard duty. With her pure dedication to protecting all those who go to the beach for fun and relaxation, she has earned the title of SHSL Lifeguard. She is the blackened of Chapter 2.

Shimakage Seitaro

Super High-School Level Conman

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/c5m3qub_8.png

"I'm Shimakage Seitaro, and I'm a simple salesman. Super High School Level, perhaps, but a mere merchant at the end of the day.""

If it's popular enough to inspire demand, Shimakage has probably pawned a cheap knockoff. From fake Rolexes to hand lotion mislabeled as hair growth cream, Shimakage's sold it all. Blessed with a silver tongue and a cunning personality, he possesses the power to win someone's trust and shatter it all in the blink of an eye. Though he prefers to call himself a salesman to avoid being stigmatized, his schemes have never quite ended at selling questionable goods, as Shimakage participates in both lottery scams and catfishing. Apparently he's willing to do anything to make a quick buck, even at the expense of others' livelihoods.

  • Animal Motifs: Birds.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Occasionally, in some of his sprites.
  • Childhood Friends: Claims to be this with Yanagi, but it is in fact a ruse crafted in order to extort money from him.
  • Closet Key: For Yanagi.
  • Con Man: It's literally his talent.
  • Consummate Liar: Not only does his talent literally revolve around his ability to lie, upon realizing that Yanagi was an amnesiac, he told him they were old childhood friends and that he owes him twenty-thousand yen. To top it off, Shimakage warns Yanagi that others will try to take advantage of him, and that he is the only one Yanagi can trust.
  • Declaration of Protection: Tells Yanagi during the prologue that he won't let anyone hurt him. This actually comes before the mutual killing game gets underway; Shimakage only meant that he wouldn't let the others take advantage of Yanagi's amnesia. However, his promise doesn't really mean much, considering he's the one taking advantage of Yanagi.
  • Declarative Finger: In many of his sprites, however, when he does it, the trustworthiness of his words is often dubious, at best.
  • Desecrating the Dead: Attempts to verify the murder weapon of Chapter One by making similar incisions on Mukizu's chest.
  • Fake First Kiss: In an attempt to appeal to their viewers, Shimakage kisses Yanagi in the pool at the start of Chapter Two.
  • "Get Out of Jail Free" Card: Reveals that the reason he isn't in jail, despite numerous counts of fraud, is because Hope's Peak wanted to study him. He was thus released into the school's custody on something of a house arrest program.
  • Good with Numbers: Claims to be, though in reality, he isn't as good as he thinks. His talent still requires him to have some prowess in this field, however.
  • Lack of Empathy: Doesn't pay any mind to Marugou's feelings when he stabs the corpse of her dead friend right in front of her.
    • He also fails to show empathy for Karina after she explains why she murdered Mukizu.
  • Lazy Bum: His alibi for the first trial is that he was just lounging in his room all night.
  • Long Haired Prettyboy: His hair flows down his back.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Being a conman kind of requires it.
  • Nature Lover: Except when it involves snakes.
  • Nerves of Steel: Unshaken by both the announcement of the mutual killing game and the first victim. In fact, the only time he seemed caught off-guard was when Yanagi told him he had a good heart.
  • No Sympathy: At least, not for Karina, who confesses that she only murdered Mukizu because she thought he was the mastermind.
  • Only Friend: Yanagi Tsuneo. He tends to step on everyone else's toes.
  • Ship Tease: In virtually all his interactions with Yanagi.
  • Shirtless Scene: Has one of these in Chapter Two, when he talks with Yanagi by the pool.
  • Smug Snake: He has a large amount of pride.
  • Sweet Tooth: He, at least, really likes cakes.
  • Terms of Endangerment: In Chapter Two, he refers to Yanagi as "sweet Yanagi-kun" and, later, "Yanagi-chan". Considering he's attempting to extort Yanagi, these aren't quite as affectionate as they would be coming from anyone else.
  • The Barnum: His talent makes him great at manipulation.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cake, which he ropes Yanagi into making with him under the pretense of finding out more about Yanagi. And no, he's not picky about the flavor.
  • Troll: He's rather great at getting on everyone's nerves.
  • Tsurime Eyes: His sharp eyes fit his conniving nature.
  • Unishment: Views confinement in the lodge as preferable to his previous living situation. Probably because his previous living situation was prison.
  • Young Entrepreneur: Although the goods he sells aren't quite legitimate.

Nagareboshi Koi

Super High-School Level Paleontologist

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gs3pzju_7.png

The dinosaurs aren’t around anymore, but new fossils are still being found all the time. Nagareboshi Koi made a name for herself among the paleontology community after discovering the fossils of a previously unheard of dinosaur. This was more than enough to solidify her title of SHSL Paleontologist.

  • Curtains Match the Window: Green hair and green eyes.
  • Otaku: Surprisingly, Nagareboshi loves manga, especially mahou shoujou manga.
  • Smart People Play Chess: After entering the game room, she wastes no time in setting up the chess board.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: She's a paleontologist; of course she's smart.
  • Workaholic: Nagareboshi finds herself growing anxious during the prologue, not because the students are trapped with no obvious way out, but because she is forced to spend her time on relaxation as opposed to work.

Marugou Madoka

Super High-School Level Detective

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jvszkrw_7.png

Marugou Madoka is one of the many students selected to be the SHSL Detective over the years. However, unlike most others which specialized in homicides or kidnappings, she specializes in business related crimes, like fraud and corruption.

  • Alliterative Name Madoka Marugou.
  • Bifauxnen: Her style is rather boyish.
  • Brainy Brunette: Being a brilliant detective obviously means she has a good head on her shoulders.
  • Flipping the Bird: Does this to Utazawa during the Chapter One trial after he defends Karina's motivation for killing Mukizu.
  • Great Detective: As she's a SHSL detective.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Very detail-oriented. She even thinks to go through old newspapers systematically to verify that they were actually old newspapers and not new ones that had been doctored in order to deceive the students.
  • V-Sign: She flashes one of these at Yanagi after he shows up while she's going through newspapers.

Karina Karamazov

Super High-School Level Ballerina

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dkru6uh_3.png

Born in Russia, Karina Karamazov has moved to Japan to further her career in dancing. With a style of her own, and having already made a name for herself in her home country, Karina was selected as the SHSL Ballerina. She is the first culprit, and is executed for the murder of Mukizu Gonkuro.

  • Alliterative Name: Karina Karamazov.
  • Ballet: It's her SHSL talent.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: While in the midst of a ballet performance, blades begin to rise from the floor. While she dodges them for a while, the floor itself eventually gives way. In a last-ditch effort to save herself, she attempts to hoist herself to safety using Krampusuke's pitchfork, but he lets go and she falls, eventually impaling herself on one of the blades.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Has light blue eyes and a stoic and calm nature.
  • Idiot Hair: Has a small one that flicks up.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: Killed Mukizu because she honestly thought he was the mastermind, and feels horrible when she finds out she was wrong.
  • The Stoic: Rather calm and collected, most of the time.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Karina murders Mukizu because she genuinely believes him to be the mastermind, but when he's revealed to be an innocent party, she expresses remorse.

Ootani Yakumo

Super High-School Level Architect

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/drfop8w.png

"(.....Wait, what am I supposed to be saying?)"

Inspired by Roppongi Hills as a kid, Ootani Yakumo began his artistic career early. Just like how some kids would draw roller coasters they'd like to ride, he drew buildings that he thought would look cool. With every year in passing, he improved upon his skills until he was recognized enough to design landmarks across Japan! Pretty cool, right? Now if only he could get his head out of the clouds for once.

  • Absent-Minded Professor: Paired with Cloudcuckoolander. Since he has the tendency to space out, Ootani misses out on conversations, and when he is called upon, it'll take him a moment to realize what he's supposed to say.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Played with. Switches between both roles with Osatsu.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He's smart enough to become an Architect, yet lazy enough to not put his jacket on correctly, need we say more?
  • Cloudcuckoolander: More of a space cadet than anything. It's more than likely you'll see him spacing out then actually paying attention to the situation at hand— however he tries his best to avert this during trials.
  • Crash-Into Hello: Averted. He almost knocks over Isayama, but he manages to catch himself before things end badly.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Dislikes diced tomatoes, if he can feel the tomato, he's not eating it. Flavored things like ketchup or sauce with no diced tomatoes are fine.
  • Genius Ditz: Skilled at his talent, but extremely spacey.
  • Odd Friendship: With Osatsu.
  • Real Men Hate Sugar: Subverted. Despite being arguably the most buff member of the cast, Ootani seems to enjoy sweets, as he made tarts with Osatsu during Chapter One.
  • Tender Tears: Ends up crying when it is revealed that Karina is the killer in chapter 1.

Yanagi Tsuneo

Super High-School Level ???

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vwktkop.png

"... Are you saying you're my mom, Shimakage-san?"
(No, no. Try that again, idiot.)

Not much is known about Yanagi, who woke up with the rest of the students facing severe amnesia. All he knows about the person he used to be is the information on his I.D. card, and the fact that he's probably in high school—though perhaps some of the other students know more about him than they're letting on. He seems determined to figure out who he is with the most efficiency possible, even if that means throwing himself into strange situations for the sake of 'knowledge'.

  • Childhood Friends: Shimakage claims that he and Yanagi knew each other when they were kids, but it's a lie constructed to take advantage of Yanagi's amnesia.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: After injuring himself attempting to kick as high as Osatsu, Yanagi exclaims; "Oh, huh, I can do it— auh. Augh. Cramp. Fuck. Shit. Fuck. Jesus Christ. Holy fuck."
  • Consummate Professional: While Yanagi's talent is still unknown, he still looks and behaves as professionally as possible at all times.
  • Fake First Kiss: In an attempt to appeal to their viewers, Shimakage kisses Yanagi in the pool at the start of Chapter Two.
  • First-Name Basis: With Marugou and Hirase.
  • Identity Amnesia: Yanagi knows nothing about himself beyond his name and his birthday, the latter of which he learned by looking at his student ID.
  • Mysterious Past: Not even he knows what happened to him.
  • No Social Skills: A byproduct of his amnesia.
  • Ship Tease: With Shimakage.
  • Tareme Eyes: His rounded eyes fit his polite and calm nature.
  • The Stoic: Rather cool-headed, in spite of the situation.
  • V-Sign: Flashes one back at Marugou.

Tenshin Sakurako

Super High-School Level Waitress

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/x6djwcc.png

Tenshin Sakurako is one of the many waitresses at Nekkyou Café. Still, you’ll find many regulars requesting her to wait on their tables due to her charm and fast service. The competition for the SHSL Waitress was stiff, but she was definitely a strong contender. She is the victim of Chapter 2.

  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Her hair is waist-length.
  • Morning Routine: As stated in her opening post, Tenshin needs at least thirty minutes in the morning before she is prepared to interact with others.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Has light pink hair, pink eyes and wears a pink coat.
  • Self-Deprecation: She notes that her talent isn't as interesting as those possessed by some of her classmates.
  • V-Sign: Introduces herself by flashing two of these.

Yamato Nadeshiko

Super High-School Level Astrologer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jnhja6f.png

Despite what you might expect from her name, Yamato Nadeshiko is very into Western astrology and was even selected as the SHSL Astrologer. She has people from all over the country coming to visit her to get a reading.

  • Emotionless Girl: Very stoic and collected.
  • Fortune Teller: Uses her talents to read people's fortunes.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Part of her hair is tied up in little pigtails with light purple scrunchies.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Her eyes are purple, along with her scrunches and a good portion of her outfit.
  • Hime Cut: Her hair is in this style, minus the pigtails.
  • The Stoic: Extremely calm and cool-headed, despite the circumstances. Who knows how long it'll last.

Mukizu Gonkuro

Super High-School Level Butler

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wfi0jfb.png

Mukizu Gonkuro, the SHSL Butler, has served under many important officials. Many are surprised to find out that he’s a high schooler due to his prominence and level of skill. He is the victim of Chapter One, killed by asphyxiation.

  • Dies Wide Open: His corpse is found in the gift shop, eyes wide open and visage contorted into an expression of pain.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Subverted. While Mukizu was definitely involved in some shady business, he's murdered by Karina before he has a chance to hurt anyone else.
  • The Butler Did It: Inverted. As he was the first victim in the killing game.
