One of the three major superpowers of Earth. A republic laden with decadence and bureaucracy, the European Union is currently at war with the Holy Britannian Empire's vassal state of Euro-Britannia.

    In General
  • Adaptational Name Change: EU stands for "Europia United" in the Code Geass proper.note
  • Combining Mecha: Thanks to the Enigma of Combination, the Black Wyverns' five Alexanders were granted the ability to combine into Hercules in Valley of Kings and Titans.
  • Democracy Is Flawed: Just as in canon, they're impaired by having a lot of wealthy oligarchs who are exploiting the system to their advantage.
  • Lensman Arms Race: The R2 chapter Ghosts, reveals that due to Britannia's rapid technological advancement, they desperately tried to catch up by researching and developing nuclear power as a substitute for sakuradite/energon.
  • Mechanical Insects: The Alexanders can transform from a humanoid bipedal mode to an insectoid quadrupedal mode (its configuration and movement more akin to an arthropod than something mammalian like a dog, horse or mouse). Bulkhead even brings up how they remind him of the Insecticons.
  • Mook Mobile: Their primary Knightmare is the Panzer-Hummel.
  • Transforming Mecha: The Alexanders are a Downplayed example, as they can switch between a bipedal humanoid mode and a quadrupedal insectoid mode.

Leadership

    Gene Smilas

Gene Smilas

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gene_smilas_code_geass_akito_the_exiled_484.jpg
"The dictatorship of one talented man is far more beneficial than the democracy of the ignorant masses."
A general of the E.U. Army and Leila Malcal's superior officer.
  • Ambition is Evil: Smilas envisions a Europia ruled by him and is ready to martyr Leila and Zero to accomplish this. As he had done with Leila's parents.
  • Bad Boss: As early as Leave of Absence he has begun planning on Leila and Zero's deaths as martyrs for his new European Empire.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Before he can even get his plans of conquest going, Lelouch Geasses him into obedience. Lelouch even drops to Smilas that Optimus would have easily seen right through him as he had.
  • Brainwashing for the Greater Good: Lelouch Geasses him into obeying Zero so he doesn't try to betray him or Leila any further.
  • The Cameo: Appears alongside Leila Malcal during Megatron's speech in Rise of the Decepticons.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In canon, he was killed off by Ashley Ashra. Here in One Shall Stand he dies when the reanimated Terrorcon Driller destroys his command vehicle.
  • Hobbes Was Right: He believes that too many voices hinders progress and decisive action and that a single powerful leader is needed to unite everyone. Anyone who is familiar with canon will know that he wants to be the one who unites everyone.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Believes a strong hand is required to rule Europia, which is why he arranged for the death of Leila's father and tried to do the same to her; he thought their naive stances would leave the E.U. defenseless against Britannia.
  • You Killed My Father: It was actually he who orchestrated the assassination of the Breisgaus.

wZERO

A black-ops unit in the E.U. Army, also known as the Wyvern Unit. Currently based in Castle Weisswolf. After joining the Autobots/Black Knight alliance, the unit was reformed into the Black Wyverns.

    Leila Malcal

Leila Breisgau / Malcal

Primary Knightmare: Alexander, Hercules

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akito_3_img084.jpg
"I know that none of us are going to be around forever, and maybe that peaceful future that all of us hope to build will come to an end one way or another, it won't stop me or any of us from creating it. The fact that our lives are finite is every bit the reason we should live our lives to the fullest!"
A member of the European Union army, she is also a leader of the wZERO Unit. She was born Leila Breisgau to a Noble Britannian family and had formed a contract with C.C. in the past. After joining the Grand Alliance, she becomes commander of the newly-formed Black Wyvern Unit.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Leila has become an established ally to the Black Knights and the Autobots, whom she has admired since their debut, especially Optimus Prime.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Lelouch.
    • Both are former Britannian Nobles who changed their last names when they went into hiding after losing their parents.
    • Both of them lead a group of fighters that consists primarily of abused Japanese.
    • They both gained a Geass from a contract with C.C.
    • They both have romantic feelings for a pilot in their groups and have yet to act on their feelings.
  • Blue Blood: Her family was originally Britannian nobility (descended from European nobility) before defecting.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Like Euphemia, she borrows Optimus Prime's catchphrase "Freedom is the right of all sentient beings" during her speech in Black Bishop's Gambit.
  • The Cameo: Appears with Gene Smilas in Rise of the Decepticons during Megatron's speech.
  • Defector from Decadence: Leila is the child of Britannian nobles who disagreed with the Britannian system and defected to the democratic E.U.
  • Everyone Can See It: Her attraction to Akito is obvious to anyone who really looks.
  • Foil: A pronounced one to Lelouch as they're both ex-Britannian nobles that now lead an opposing fighting force against their former homeland and both have formed a contract with C.C. While Lelouch is self-confident and somewhat jaded (even after he Took a Level in Idealism, thanks to Optimus and the gang), Leila is openly compassionate and idealistic but not as self-assured in her role as a commander.
  • Leader Forms the Head: When the Alexanders of the Black Wyvern Unit are turned into Combiners by the Enigma of Combination, her Alexander becomes the main body of the Hercules.
  • Magical Eye: Was given a Geass by C.C. eleven years ago after her parents died. At the start of the story, it has yet to activate and will disappear in a year unless she uses it. Leila finally properly uses it in Valley of Kings and Titans to nullify Shin's Dark Geass and synergize with the Enigma of Combination to create the Combiner Knightmare Hercules.
  • Martial Pacifist: She believes that peace is possible across humanity, and hopes to help the Autobot-Black Knight Alliance achieve it. She also knows aikido and is more than capable of defending herself if needed.
  • Opposites Attract: She's romantically-interested in Akito.
  • Tears of Joy: Leila was crying at the sight of Optimus returning.

    Claus Warwick

Claus Warwick

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/195173.jpg
"You guys are something else, aren't you?"
Leila's aide-de-camp. Rarely seen without his flask.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Has a dry sense of humor.
  • Functional Alcoholic: Seems capable of doing his job in spite of his regular consumption of alcohol.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He's convinced to switch sides and join the Alliance.
  • Hidden Depths: While Claus called himself a worthless coward for his actions, Prowl and Orpheus are quick to point out that his devotion for his daughter shows that he has great bravery and hope hidden under everything to keep going for her sake.
  • The Mole: Has been passing information to Euro-Britannia for some time, until Prowl and Orpheus convince him to break his ties with them.
  • Sour Supporter: Sure, he's cynical and snarky but keeps supporting Leila.

    Pierre Anou

Pierre Anou

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pierre_anou_5.jpg
The racist ex-commanding officer of wZERO, replaced by Leila long ago.
  • Adapted Out: He's completely absent from the story and is only mentioned, as the author found him annoying and served no real purpose in the story.
  • Bad Boss: Was this to wZERO for his treatment of the Japanese soldiers under his command, using them for suicide missions and putting self-destruct mechanisms in their Alexanders.
  • Fantastic Racism: According to the author, he views the Cybertronians as robotic abominations.
  • The Ghost: He's only mentioned in the story, as he has been removed as wZERO's commander at this point.

Pilots

    Akito Hyūga

Akito Hyūga

Primary Knightmare: Alexander, Gardmare, Alexander Liberte, Hercules

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akito_hyuga2_3.png
"After what my brother did...I was empty...alone...unfeeling...but when I met you, and later the Black Knights and the Autobots.. I began to feel again."
A soldier within the EUs wZERO Unit. Coming from a deeply disturbing past, Akito at the beginning of his appearances is a solemn, serious type, with little regard for the Optimism of the Grand Alliance. But with some serious influences and a few important confrontations with his past, Akito might be growing into a much more open and better man than he thought possible.
  • Ace Pilot: During a training exercise with Kallen, he's able to keep with the Guren SEITEN in a prototype Alexander. Gino notes that he could be on the same level as a Knight of the Round. Lloyd even acknowledges his skills and says that he could be a better devicer than Suzaku.
  • The Berserker: When Shin's Geass becomes active in Akito, slaughter ensues. That also goes for anyone else Akito's mind is connected with. He's freed from the effects of Shin's Geass by Cera in The Fires of Rage.
  • Character Development: As the heroes began working on rescuing Akito's humanity, he begins to become more optimistic and hopeful for the future. Thus beginning his path to becoming more normal and see a future for himself.
  • The Cynic: Akito is rather blase regarding death and his chances for victory. He also doesn't necessarily think much of the heroes' claims that Euphie was framed.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Finding his family dead and his elder brother trying to magically drive him to suicide really did a number on him mentally.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Just like in Akito the Exiled, he's introduced slaughtering Euro-Britannian forces left and right like a man possessed all by himself.
  • The Lancer: Following WZERO's integration in the Autobot-Black Knight Alliance, Akito is named Leila's second-in-command of the Black Wyverns unit.
  • Madness Mantra: "Die!" Said whenever he's in a real fight.
  • One-Man Army: Regular Sutherlands have no chance against him.
  • Power Incontinence: The Geass Akito received from Shin acts as this - should another Geass user be connected to him mentally, the activation of Akito's Geass command will force his allies' Geass to activate.
  • Red Baron: The Ghost of Hannibal.
  • The Stoic: Due to his cynicism, Akito has a pretty low spectrum of emotion.
  • Undying Loyalty: In spite of his emotionless existence, he still remains focused on protecting Leila, his commanding officer. Lelouch even compares it to how protecting Nunnally was what kept him going for years.

    Ryo Sayama

Ryo Sayama

Primary Knightmare: Sutherland, Alexander Type-02, Alexander Valiant, Hercules

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ryo_sayama.png
"All we want, is a place to call home."
A Japanese youth in charge of a terrorist cell, later a member of wZERO.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Much like in canon, after fighting and spending enough time with Akito and the rest of the group, he comes to genuinely trust them and see them as friends.
  • Hot-Blooded: During their mission to abduct General Smilas, Ryo was the most adamant about seeing the mission through, even after it was revealed that the General's convoy included the Black Knights and the Autobots.
  • Super Drowning Skills: He's incapable of swimming and Kallen and Suzaku have to save him when he falls into a river.

    Ayano Kosaka

Ayano Kosaka

Primary Knightmare: Alexander Type-02, Alexander Valiant, Hercules

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pict515.jpg
"I'd love to go to Japan one day, all of us."
A young Japanese girl from Ryo's terrorist group, later part of wZERO.
  • Action Girl: Wields her ancestral sword with great skill. Still doesn't help against the far more experienced and formally-trained Suzaku.
  • Ancestral Weapon: Her kodachi. She gets to keep it in this story.
  • Birds of a Feather: Kallen quickly recognized that she had this with Ayano.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: In To Divide and Unite, having motion sickness combined with her first Groundbridge doesn't do her body wonders, much to everybody else's sympathy when they hear her throw up in her Alexander's cockpit. At the end of Leave of Absence, she's definitely not looking forward to going through a Groundbridge again due to a smirking Kallen noting that it's much worse without a Knightmare.
  • Tears of Joy: Like Leila, Ayano was both disbelieved and crying at the same time when she heard Optimus came back.

    Yukiya Naruse

Yukiya Naruse

Primary Knightmare: Alexander Type-02, Alexander Valiant, Hercules

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/naruse_yukiya.png
"Well... this is sure gonna be one hell of an experience."
The third member of Ryo's terrorist group, he excels at collecting data and handling explosives.
  • Cold Sniper: His specialty is sniping and can be pretty cool-headed.
  • The Cracker: He's the tech expert of Ryo's terrorist cell.
  • Didn't See That Coming: He was left stuttering when Prowl manages to disable his suicide vest despite the Autobot's size. That Zero was a Britannian prince was also a surprise.
  • Mad Bomber: His go-to weaponry are bombs. He even had a suicide vest set up for the abduction attempt on General Smilas - which even a bot as big as Prowl was capable of disabling.
  • Oh, Crap!: Has this reaction when he realizes he has lost sight of Prowl.

Military Officers

    Oscar Hammel

Oscar Hammel

Scientists

    Anna Clément

Anna Clément

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anna_clement.jpg
The scientist who is responsible for creating the Alexander Knightmare Frame. She is a childhood friend of Leila Malcal.
  • Geeky Turn-On: Yukiya's intelligence and penchant for tech-dabbling are implied to be major sources of attraction for Anna.
  • Nice Girl: Is very sweet and helpful to the team. Unsurprisingly, she and Euphie get along well.
  • Ship Tease: Has a few moments with Yukiya, such as when they dance together at the gypsy camp.
  • The Smart Girl: She's the wZERO's top scientist, and created the various Alexander Knightmares for the wZERO's soldiers.

A neuroscience expert who works with wZERO.
  • Good Counterpart: Can be seen as a more moral counterpart of Lloyd Asplund and even Shockwave.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her husband Takeru, who was rendered comatose following an early test of the BRS. She's hopeful that cybertronian technology might be able to revive him.
