Protagonists

    As a Duo
  • Battle Couple: Mitsuru and Kagami form a powerful unit in battle. By the end of the series, they're the Official Couple.
  • Divine Date: As one of the creators of Hexennatch's setting, Kagami could be considered a goddess to the people of that world, such as Mitsuru. At the end, Kagami and Mitsuru become a couple.
  • From Roommates to Romance: As of the start of Volume 3, Kagami has moved in with Mitsuru at the latter's penthouse in Shihouin Academy's General Division dorm. The two become a couple by the end of Volume 4.
  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple: While Kagami is no Butch Lesbian, she often wears suits while Mitsuru wears skirts. This is best represented by the styles of her Combat Frames; Mitsuru is a Miko who fights with a Sacred Bow and Arrows and Kagami is a Magic Knight wielding a BFS.
  • Official Couple: Their relationship is at the center of the story and the series ends with them being a couple.
  • Opposites Attract: Mitsuru is levelheaded and collected while Kagami is boastful and reckless. Naturally, they fall for each other.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Mitsuru is the serious and reasonable Blue Oni to Kagami's brash and excitable Red Oni. Ironically, their colors are reversed.
  • Short Range Fighter Long Range Fighter: Mitsuru is unmatched in archery and her long-range attacks are very potent, while Kagami is the close-range BFS wielder who deals with the defense Mitsuru is bad at.

    Mitsuru Horinouchi

Mitsuru Horinouchi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/horinouchi_mitsuru.png
Combat Frame

Shihouin Academy's student council president and representative of the General Division. She's also the current head of the remarkably wealthy Horinouchi family. At the start of the series, Mitsuru is the last of the top four world witch rankings. Her goal is to destroy the Black Witch after her mother failed at it in the previous Hexennacht.

Her Combat Frame is Shrine Maiden-style, her Device is Bow-Cannon Akerindou and her Servant is Suzaku.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Her fighting style is almost entirely attack-oriented since she always focuses exclusively on defeating her enemy. Kagami and Elsie often tease her about it.
  • Covert Pervert: Kagami and Elsie accuse Mitsuru of being one when she gets a willpower boost from getting called Manko (vagina) by Kagami. Mitsuru reproaches them to not decide her character type.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Mitsuru is unrivaled in long-ranged combat and attack power, but she lacks defensive skills and durability. If an attacker can close the distance before she can take them out, she's pretty much screwed.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: She takes a Now or Never Kiss from Kagami when the latter is in a comatose state because of Shouko's attack before Hexennatch.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Kagami calls her "Manko" (Japanese for vagina) based on an Alternate Character Reading of her given name. Mitsuru is endlessly annoyed by it.
  • Experienced Protagonist: By the start of the story, Mitsuru had already fought many battles in order to climb her way up to the top four of the Witch Rankers.
  • Expy Coexistence: Mitsuru is similar to Tomo Asama from the author's other work Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, which takes place in the same universe as Hexennatch. Like Tomo Asama, Mitsuru is a Miko-themed archer with Improbable Aiming Skills, and has colossal breasts.
  • Family Theme Naming: Her name is Mitsuru and her mother was named Mitsuyo.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: The Form of her Frame has one long detached kimono-style sleeve worn over her left arm and her left hand is covered by a large armored glove, while her right arm wears an elbow-length glove.
  • Flower Motifs: Her magic frame is decorated with maple leaves.
  • Friendless Background: She was so focused on reaching the top four witch rankings that she never befriended anyone. Her tendency to ruthlessly crush her opponents also caused her peers to keep their distance from her out of fear.
  • Glass Cannon: Her Akerindou is said to far surpass the higher rankers in pure physical attack power, but she admits her defensive ability is very poor. That's why she needs the help of a melee fighter like Kagami to make up for that.
  • Hime Cut: She has blunt bangs, cheek-length sidelocks and hip-length straight hair to showcase her Miko motif as well as her position as the heiress of an influential conglomerate and the Student Council President.
  • His Quirk Lives On: She uses physical shells for her main cannon because her mother did the same.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Her sniping skills are so impossibly accurate that she can fire three rapid shots with multi-stage arrows to hit a single target all the way from the South Pole to Tokyo.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: She's fairly feminine and ends up in a romantic relationship with Kagami.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Mitsuru is the young head of an exceptionally wealthy family and lives in luxury, but she has no friends. Before Kagami came into her life, she only associated with her butler and maids.
  • Long-Range Fighter: Mitsuru is a great archer who is almost unbeatable at long-range battles, but she has a hard time at close-range combat. She does have some options to fight at close-range such as using her ether bowstring emitter like a sword, but it's limited and she tries to stick to long-range combat as much as she can.
  • Meaningful Name: The kanji in Mitsuru means "fulfill" or "satisfy". Since her mother was named Mitsuyo (literally written as "fulfilled generation"), Kagami assumes she removed the 'generation' from her daughter's name to say her role to fulfill the next generation was already complete.
  • Miko: Her Frame has a shrine maiden motif. Since the Horinouchi family was chosen as the Shinto representative for Hexennacht, Mitsuru has the cooperation of the Shinto network of all local Japanese deities.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a dark-haired beauty with a very large chest, and her Magical Girl Warrior outfit is a skintight bodysuit with a Miko motif. The Beach Chapter in Volume 2 depicts her wearing a swimsuit that shows off her massive cleavage.
  • Mythical Motifs: Her Servant is a red bird named Suzaku, referencing the Vermilion Bird of the Four Gods.
  • Nice Girl: She's a very kindhearted and generous girl.
  • Ojou: She's the sole heiress of the powerful Horinouchi conglomerate. She has her own Big Fancy House with a personal butler and several maids at her service. Currently, she lives at the top floor of the General Division dorm, which is basically a luxury penthouse.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Her black hair turns rosy red whenever she activates her Frame.
  • Sacred Bow and Arrows: As part of her Miko motif, Mitsuru uses a bow named Akerindou and ether arrows in combat. In addition, all of Japan's Shinto shrines and the Buddhist temples are backing up her Akerindou thanks to the Horinouchi family representing Japan's Shinto.
  • Straight Man: She reprimands Kagami (often violently) whenever the latter does something too crazy or stupid.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks practically identical to her deceased mother.
  • Student Council President: She's the president of Shihouin Academy's student council.
  • Team Mom: Mitsuru takes up a motherly role in her new group of friends, such as scolding Kagami and Elsie for their bad manners. Lampshaded by Elsie, who tells Mitsuru to wait a few more years before starting to act like a mom.
  • Token Rich Student: There's a huge social class gap between her and the other girls at her high school. Elsie is astonished to see the fanciness of Mitsuru's dorm room.
  • Tsundere: Sweet type. Mitsuru acts polite and considerate with everyone, yet she's quick to yell and hit when Kagami provokes her.
  • What Is This Feeling?: She feels confused when she finds herself getting jealous of Kagami being friendly with her head maid.
  • You Killed My Mother: Her main motive for wanting to destroy the Black Witch is avenging her mother's death. Thanks to Kagami's influence, Mitsuru stops focusing on revenge and changes her goal to protecting what's important to her in the present.

    Kagami Kagami

Kagami Kagami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kagami_kagami.jpg
Combat Frame

A mysterious girl who one day appears in Tokyo. Kagami comes from another world with no magic and she's one of the creators of Mitsuru's world. Her sister Shouko is the Black Witch. Because Shouko continues destroying the worlds they created, Kagami is determinate to stop her even if it means having to kill her own sister. Kagami becomes Mitsuru's partner and both share the same rank as a unit.

Her Combat Frame is Holy Knight-style, her Device is Sword-Cannon Dikaiosyne and her Servant is Dikaio.
  • The Ageless: She mentions she never ages no matter how much time she spends traveling through Shouko's worlds, possibly because she's one of their co-creators.
  • Animal Lover: She loves small animals and immediately jumps to defend a Servant that some guards wanted to get rid of for being flawed.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Even though Mitsuru didn't help her when Elsie attacked her, Kagami goes to support Mitsuru during the latter's battle with Elsie. When asked why by Mitsuru, Kagami states Mitsuru believed her when she told her she came from another world without demanding proof, so she'll help her.
  • BFS: Her Normal Device is a giant sword larger than her body. When she releases her Magino Device, her sword is five-hundred-meter long.
  • Bifauxnen: Kagami often wears a suit and she looks pretty attractive in it.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Near the end of Volume 1, he pulls off a heroic entrance when she arrives in the middle of Mitsuru's Ranker Battle with Elsie to act as her reinforcement.
    • She does the same thing in Volume 4. Mitsuru looks like she's about to be defeated by Shouko and then, Kagami arrives after regaining consciousness just in time to join Mitsuru in the battle.
  • But Now I Must Go: Everyone knows that even if Kagami and Mitsuru defeat the Black Witch, Kagami will return to her original world. At the end of the series, she does indeed leave Mitsuru's world with Shouko after the Book of Creation is destroyed. However, Mitsuru and the others find a way to travel to Kagami's world so they can reunite with Kagami.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Shouko's Cain. Kagami's younger sister Shouko is destroying the worlds they created together as a result of the thoughts of death her poor health cause. After failing to save several worlds, Kagami has resolved to put a stop to it by killing Shouko. They do reconcile at the end of the series.
  • Classy Cravat: Her civilian outfit is a classy suit with a cravat.
  • Close-Range Combatant: In contrast to Mitsuru, Kagami is better at close-range fights since she specializes in sword fighting and melee attacks.
  • Deuteragonist: Kagami is the protagonist of the series as much as Mitsuru is.
  • Dimensional Traveler: She comes from another world and appears to have been able to visit the worlds she and Shouko created before Shouko started destroying them.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Before she appeared in Hexennatch's world, Kagami had already traveled through possibly hundreds of worlds in order to find her sister and stop her from destroying all the worlds they created.
  • Failure-to-Save Murder: Mary Sue antagonizes Kagami out of a grudge over Kagami having failed to save Mary's original world and its inhabitants.
  • First Friend: She becomes Mitsuru's first friend and battle partner. Mitsuru appreciates Kagami a lot because she had no one to rely on in combat before.
  • The Gadfly: She likes to tease Mitsuru a lot.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Her Device is a sword, she's one of the main heroines and has an affinition for justice.
  • Heroic BSoD: She enters a state of depression after Mary Sue reveals her true identity as Reese May, the Sole Survivor of one of the worlds destroyed by Shouko and of which Kagami fled.
  • Idiot Hero: Played With. Kagami isn't stupid per se, but her recklessness and apparent lack of common sense still make look like an idiot to everyone around her.
  • Imagination-Based Superpower: Instead of needing a Servant to manifest a Frame, Kagami can create whatever equipment and weapons she'll like to use out of nothing. This is because she obtained her magic from the Book of Creation, which gives physical form to its owner's imagination.
  • Justice Will Prevail: A good part of her speech is her making grand proclamations of doing justice. She even names her Device and Cannon after the spirit of justice in Classical Mythology.
  • Large Ham: Kagami sure loves to be spectacular in her aspirations to be an "ally of justice".
  • Magic Knight: Her Frame style is an outdated Holy Knight model and she likes to play the role of an ally of justice. Her Device is a giant sword and she possesses an immense magical power due to being able to extract ether directly from the ley lines.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Kagami suddenly enters Mitsuru's life and with her energetic and crazy personality, she brings Mitsuru out of her shell and gets her to start a group of friends with the top rankers both defeat together. Mitsuru even points out that it's thanks to Kagami that she can now look at the moon and focus on protecting her present instead of obsessing over avenging her mother's death.
  • Meaningful Name: Her given name is written with the kanji for mirror. According to Kagami, her mother said she was given that name she would become a good role model who would be a reflection of whoever she is with.
  • My Greatest Failure: While she usually tries to act like it doesn't bother her much, Kagami does feel deeply regretful and guilty over her failure to save all the previous worlds that Shouko destroyed. The moment she finds the Sole Survivor of one of those worlds, Kagami is sent into one big Heroic BSoD.
  • Mystical White Hair: She's a silvery-white-haired Dimensional Traveler who can use magic in unusual ways.
  • Physical Goddess: She fundamentally is a godlike being in Mitsuru's world. Kagami is one of the co-authors of the story that created the Hexennatch's setting and her Imagination-Based Superpower allows her to draw nearly infinite ether without the need of a Servant, something that puts her in a different league from any other witch.
  • Power Copying: Since Kagami's magic powers run on her imagination, she can create her own equipment and spells based on those she sees from others once she understands their basic functions. For example, she created her Combat Frame and Device basing it on Mitsuru's.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Activating her Frame changes her hair color from white to cyan. Also, her natural hair color is actually black, but it turns white when she travels to the worlds created by Shouko.
  • Really 700 Years Old: It isn't specified exactly how much time she has been traveling through Shouko's worlds, but it's possible it has been a few hundreds of years at the very least.
  • Rebuilt Pedestal: Mary Sue, once called Reese May, looked up to Kagami as her military superior and magic mentor. When Mary's world was about to be destroyed by Shouko, Kagami fled that world and Mary's admiration towards her turned into wrathful hatred. Once she finds out Kagami has arrived to Hexennatch's world, Mary is determinate to punish her as a criminal. They make up upon Mary's defeat at their Ranker battle and she goes back to respecting Kagami.
  • Repetitive Name: Both her given name and surname are read as Kagami, although the kanji is different.
  • Shower of Angst: She takes one long bath after her first Ranker battle against Mary Sue, which left her depressed after being reminded of the destruction of Mary's world.
  • Sword Beam: Her BFS Dikaiosyne comes with a cannon that can fire laser beams.
  • Two First Names: Kagami can be both a given name and a family name in Japan, so her Repetitive Name is not that strange in Japanese language.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Kagami has her share of blame for how her little sister started destroying the worlds they created. Kagami was overly critical of the stories Shouko wrote, which lead the latter to only see the flaws in the works she came up with. Shouko became convinced those flaws would eventually cause her worlds to collapse and she started erasing them before that happened.

Top Rankers Witches

    Elsie Hunter

Elsie Hunter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elsie_hunter.png
Combat Frame

The third of the top four world witch rankings. She's the head of the Shihouin Academy's Special Equipment Division and the American representative for the upcoming Hexennacht.

Her Combat Frame is Karate-style, her Device is Shield-Cannon Hedgehog and her Servant is Hedgehog.
  • Animal Motifs: The cat. She's sometimes illustrated with a Playful Cat Smile, her Frame has hair accessories that look like cat ears and her codename in the military is Green Cat.
  • Boyish Short Hair: Short hair for a brash martial artist.
  • Close-Range Combatant: Because of her martial artist theme, both the Form and Pile Bunker Device of her Normal Frame are meant for close-range combat.
  • Cute Little Fangs: She's drawn with small sharp fangs to go along her spunky personality and cat Animal Motif.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After losing to Mitsuru and Kagami, she becomes their close friend and ally.
  • Fiery Redhead: An energetic and feisty girl with auburn hair.
  • Graceful Loser: She accepts losing her rank to Kagami and Mitsuru pretty well and befriends them afterwards.
  • Ironic Name: Her mother named her Elsie after Alice in Wonderland, because Elsie is a variant of Alice. Since Elsie was so small, her mother hoped she could grow big like Alice does in the book. Unfortunately, that wish didn't come true.
  • Martial Arts Headband: Since she uses a Karate-style, her Form Frame includes a headband around her forehead.
  • Older Than She Looks: She's quite short and flat-chested for a high school student. She blames it on her father feeding her almost nothing but meat.
  • Pile Bunker: Her Normal Device is a miniature pile bunker attached to her arm.
  • Playful Cat Smile: She's occasionally depicted with a catlike smile, reflecting her energetic personality.
  • Sarashi: The Form of her Frame includes a bandage wrapped around her chest. It suits her martial artist motif.
  • Spy Satellites: She has access to the USA military satellites and uses them to monitor her opponents in battle.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's the shortest and most childlike of the top four Witch Rankers.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She's a self-acknowledged meat lover, something she got from her Disappeared Dad.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She becomes good friends with Mary Sue. It's obvious from the way they're constantly arguing and competing with each other.

    Mary Sue

Mary Sue

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reese_may.png
Combat Frame

The ace and representative of the Spell Division at Shihouin Academy and second of the four world witch rankings. She challenges Kagami and Mitsuru to a Ranker battle because she claims Kagami is a criminal.

Her Combat Frame is Executioner-style, her Device is Bundled Scythe Ira and her Servant is Macabre.
  • The Ace: She's great at everything she does.
  • Barrier Warrior: Mary casts an annihilation spell that creates a giant invisible scythe which acts like a barrier that instantly eliminates any attacks and weapons aimed at her.
  • Broken Bird: Losing her original world and everyone she cared about with it left a very deep scar in her heart. She tries to take out all her anguish and anger on Kagami, who she blames for her world's destruction for fleeing from it. She starts getting better after she reconciles with Kagami and realizes she has good friends in the world she lives now.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her original world was destroyed after her mentor Kagami apparently abandoned it and she was sent away to another world by its inhabitants after being entrusted with their magic power.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She dresses all in black, her Combat Frame has a Grim Reaper motif, and her weapon is a Sinister Scythe. Despite being antagonistic towards Kagami when first introduced, Mary is a good person and joins the group of main heroines.
  • Dark Magical Girl: She fits the archetype pretty well, being a Grim Reaper-themed Magical Girl dressed in black who antagonizes the Magical Girl protagonist because of deep-rooted issues coming from her Dark and Troubled Past. As per the trope, she gets over her problems thanks to making friends and joins the main heroines' side.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Mary makes peace with Kagami and becomes yet another good friend to her and Mitsuru after losing their Ranker battle.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: After her reconciliation with Kagami, Mary becomes much less cold and opens up to other witches.
  • Dimensional Cutter: The annihilation scythe of her Magino Device is able to cut into space itself and send herself and her target flying at great distance, granting a teleporting effect.
  • Dimensional Traveler: Mary comes from the Layered Circles World, another of the worlds created and destroyed by Shouko Kagami.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: She thinks Mitsuru's true name is Manko (vagina) because that's how Kagami calls her. Mary assumes the Horinouchi family must have intended to protect their witch from I Know Your True Name spells by giving her an extremely vulgar name.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: She felt Kagami betrayed her and her companions when she deserted their world shortly before Shouko destroyed it.
  • Expy Coexistence: She shares many characteristics with Brunhild Schild from The Ending Chronicle, Kawakami's early work that takes place in the distant past of Hexennacht. Like Brunhild, Mary is a stoic girl who wields a Sinister Scythe that gives her a Grim Reaper motif, comes from another world that was destroyed and harbors a grudge toward one of the heroes for apparently betraying her by allowing the loss of her world and loved ones. Similar to Brunhild, Mary eventually reconciles with the target of her grudge.
  • Glass Cannon: Played With. She states her Ira possesses a complete focus on attack power and bare minimum of defense, similarly to Mitsuru's Akerindou. However, her Annihilation spell more than makes up for her lack of actual defense, as it erases any attacks it intercepts.
  • The Grim Reaper: Her Frame is Grim Reaper-inspired with her Device being several Sinister Scythes and her Servant is a Grim Reaper-type.
  • In the Hood: The outfit of her Form includes a hood over her head, which makes her look like a Grim Reaper.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: Mary had difficulty making friends at her original world and kept her distance from her fellow students of the Spell Division. At the end of her battle with Kagami and Mitsuru, Mary realizes the Spell Division's witches care about her and opens up to them. She also starts hanging out with Kagami, Mitsuru and Elsie.
  • Meaningful Rename: Her original name is Reese May. When she enrolled at the academy, the headmaster renamed her Mary Sue to motivate her to become The Ace.
  • Military Mage: Her original world was military-oriented and they also used magic there, although to a lesser extent than Hexennatch's world. Her military upbringing still influences her behavior.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: The way she moves and walks is described as amazing and almost superhuman. When Elsie questions if she does it on purpose, Mary makes it clear she doesn't even realize how incredible her casual movements are.
  • Mystical White Hair: She's a white-haired Dimensional Traveler with very powerful magical abilities similar to Kagami.
  • No Social Skills: She has very little experience at normal social situations because she only lived as a soldier in her original world.
  • Power of the Void: Mary's Annihilation spell allows her to erase and consume anything with an invisible attack, leaving nothing behind, and even erase and consume the distance between her and her opponent. The attack also affects the 'mold' of the things it annihilates, worsening the area's omen and making it harder to create or recreate things there.
  • Prefers Proper Names: Mary addresses people primarily by their title, such as calling Kagami "Brigadier General". She also only ever calls Elsie by her full name.
  • Sinister Scythe: Her Normal Device takes the form of three gun-like scythes lined up alongside each other. Similarly, her Magino Device is a set of nine giant scythes arranged together into a circle.
  • Sole Survivor: She's the only surviving human of the Layered Circles World, one of the many worlds that were created and destroyed by Shouko.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Elsie finds out Mary has been monitoring all of Kagami's and Mitsuru's movements and following them closely ever since she lost to them. Mary justifies it by stating she wants to stop any lower Ranker who might want to pick a fight with Kagami and Mitsuru.
  • The Stoic: Her facial expression is cool and calm most of the time.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She acts aloof, coolheaded and reserved, but she's surprisingly sentimental and caring.
  • Survivor Guilt: She feels torn by being the only person in her world who could escape before Shouko destroyed it. She starts to recover when Kagami expresses how happy she's that Mary survived.
  • Two First Names: Sue is a fairly common given name, but it's used as a surname too. The same applies to her real name Reese May since May is both a valid given name and surname.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She forms this relationship with Elsie. It's easy to see how well they get along because of the way they keep getting into fights over anything.

    Fleur Shihouin

Fleur Shihouin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fleur_shihouin.png
Combat Frame

The daughter of the headmaster of Shihouin Academy and representative of the Honors Division, dedicated to Witches who use highly unique types of spells. The rarest thing about her is that she apparently has no Servant. She's the mysterious Rank 1 in the world witch rankings.

Her Combat Frame is Flower Shrine Maiden and her Device is Spear Hoe Zephyr.
  • Airborne Aircraft Carrier: Her Magino Device is a three-kilometer-long flower-shaped flying fortress composed of six duplicates of her hoe Device.
  • Anti-Magic: She can negate magic attacks by turning them into ether flowers.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Her ability to extract ether surpasses even Kagami's, effectively making her possibly the most powerful witch in the world. However, it's almost impossible for her to control all that ether without the help of her mother, to the point she can't even cast simple spells by herself. Also, her explosive spells are so dangerously destructive that they surely will do more bad than good if she fights in Hexennatch.
  • Berserk Button: If you damage any form of plant life in front of her, Fleur will make you pay for it by blasting you away with her explosive flowers.
  • Caring Gardener: Fleur loves flowers more than anything and she's always found taking care of the flower garden at Shihouin Academy.
  • Character Development: After her defeat in Volume 3, Fleur is putting effort in learning how to live without relying on her mother and her immense magic power for everything.
  • Cool Mask: As the Rank 1, she conceals her face with a gas mask.
  • De-power: With the loss of Cerisier who acted as her Servant, Fleur not only is left unable to summon a Combat Frame, she can no longer use magic due to not having proper control over the ether she extracts. It might take her a long time before she's ready to find a new Servant.
  • Does Not Like Spam: She doesn't eat vegetables out of her love for flowers.
  • Druid: Her spell type is based on the European Druid-style.
  • Elective Mute: Those who see her every day have never heard her speak. She only turns talkative around her mother.
  • Flower Motifs: Her name means flower and her Witch powers are all related to flowers.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She has a twin-tail hairstyle, which only makes her appear more childish than she already is.
  • Green Thumb: She has the power to create flowers and cherry trees made of ether which grow out of anything in the environment surrounding her, be it the ground, air or even her opponents' weapons and spells.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Fleur is a very cheerful and childish blonde girl.
  • Having a Blast: She's able to generate explosions with the ether flowers created from her Device.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Her Device is shaped like a hoe to go with her flower motif.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She has bright blue eyes and a childlike innocence.
  • In the Hood: In her first appearance, she hides her face with the hood of her school uniform. This adds to how much of a mystery she is.
  • Meaningful Name: Fleur is French for flower, which is a perfect name for a Witch with a flower theme.
  • Momma's Boy: A Rare Female Example. Fleur adores her mama to no end and tries her best to be a "good girl" who always obeys what her mama says. This is because she wants to think her mother won't have to leave if she's a good daughter.
  • No Social Skills: She never interacted with anyone but her mother. When she starts socializing with other Witches such as Shouko, Fleur shows she isn't used to such situations.
  • Noiseless Walker: People don't notice her walking up to them until she's standing right in front of them.
  • Older Than She Looks: She's a third-year high school student, but looks like a middle school student.
  • Parent-Child Team: She and her mother are actually the unit that makes up Rank 1 since her mother acts as her Servant. Fleur primarily focuses on being the attacker of the two while her mother handles the defense.
  • Petal Power: Her main offensive attack is to create explosive ether flower petals.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Her school uniform and the outfit of her Form are both pink, reflecting her girly personality.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Cerisier is already dead and her regrets are only kept in the world of the living to look after her daughter. Fleur wants to believe her mother won't have to leave her if she defeats the Black Witch and behaves like an obedient daughter. When Cerisier disappears once her magic power runs out, Fleur has such a bad Freak Out that she attempts to destroy everything around her with her collapsing Magino Device.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Her blonde hair changes to pink when she activates her Frame.
  • Power Incontinence: Fleur has an extraordinary skill to extract high levels of ether that surpasses even Kagami's. However, without the help of her mother, Fleur is unable to cast even simple spells and keep them under control.
  • Story-Breaker Power: While Fleur's ether flowers are exploding, the unnecessary ones become seeds which spread the explosion through natural growth. In only half an hour, her flowers will spread far enough to cover half the surface of the Earth, and reach the Earth's troposphere. Any attack used within this environment is turned into flowers and negated, even attacks like Mary's annihilation spell. Many consider this the optimal spell for facing the Black Witch, with the only downside being the collateral damage it can cause. If it haven't been for her Servant Cerisier reaching her limit, Mitsuru and Kagami would have had a much harder time in their fight against Fleur.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Fleur can possibly extract more ether than any Witch in her world, including Kagami, giving her a limitless power source for her spells. However, she has no proper control over the ether she uses and can let it go out of control easily, which is why she needs her mother to keep her ether in check.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: She has been the Rank 1 for ten years with the intention of living up to her mother's expectation of eventually defeating the Black Witch. She also likes to show off her immensely powerful explosive spells to make her mother praise her. Ironically, she doesn't realize that by doing this she's using up the little magic power Cerisier has left.
  • Womanchild: Despite being around 18 years old, Fleur still acts like a little child who is completely dependent on her mother for everything she does.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Pretty much the only reason why Mitsuru and Kagami had any chance to win against her was because Fleur wasn't at her prime since her Servant Cerisier's power was at its limit and she disappears in the middle of the battle.

The Moon

    Shouko Kagami

Shouko Kagami

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/black_witch_frame.png

The Black Witch who created the world of witches and tries to destroy it every Hexennatch. She's also Kagami's younger sister.

Her Combat Frame is Queen-type and her Device is a Long Sword-type. The Book of Creation, which she named Amaze, acts as her Servant.
  • Big Bad: She's the most powerful and greatest threat to the world of Hexennatch. The main goal of the story is defeating Shouko before she destroys the world she created.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Shouko doesn't really like to destroy the worlds she creates, but she also believes she must erase them before they collapse because of the mistakes she made when creating them. She still thinks of the people inhabiting her worlds as fictional characters, so to her, killing them is not much different from an author killing characters in a fictional story.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Kagami's Abel. Shouko has set out to destroy all the dimensions she created from her stories while her older sister Kagami tries to stop her.
  • Death Seeker: Fleur figures out Shouko gives the Witches the chance to fight her because she wants to die by the hands of her own characters and prove the power of the world she created surpassed hers.
  • Destroyer Deity: She has destroyed nearly all the worlds she created with the power of the Book of Creation. She appears in the world of Hexannatch every decade to try and destroy their world, which is why the Witches fight to stop her.
  • Evil Wears Black: She's the main villain of the series and her Queen-type Combat Frame is completely black.
  • Imagination-Based Superpower: The Book of Creation allows her to create her own set of powers and minions according to what she wants to put in her story. Therefore, her power is only limited by her imagination.
  • Karma Houdini: At the end of the story, Shouko reconciles with her sister and returns to their original world, getting out scot-free after causing so much death and destruction in her created worlds.
  • The Maker: She created many dimensions and its inhabitants by writing stories in the Book of Creation.
  • Mook Maker: She can summon minions that look like toys to attack several parts of the planet while she stays on the moon.
  • Physical Goddess: She's basically the god of the world of Hexennatch, having used the Book of Creation to create it and intending to use that same power to destroy it.
  • Retconjuration: She has the power to erase things from her "story" and all memory of it, which is why no one can remember how Mitsuru's mother fought against the Black Witch.
  • Satanic Archetype: She views herself as one after all the death and destruction she caused in the previous worlds she created. She even named her version of the Geo Frame as the Satanic Frame.
  • Spikes of Villainy: Her Queen-type Combat Frame has lots of spikes sticking out of it, which is fitting as she's playing the villain of the story she created.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Shouko believes she did the right thing by destroying all the worlds before Hexennatch's since the flaws of her writing would have doomed those worlds sooner or later.

    Cerisier Shihouin

Cerisier Shihouin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cerisier_shihouin.jpg

The headmaster of Shihouin Academy and one of the Three Sages. She was good friends with Mitsuru's mother.

  • Action Mom: She can still participate in a Ranker Battle to fight alongside her daughter Fleur.
  • Caring Gardener: She takes good care of the garden at her academy. She also planted a garden made of divinely protected flower seeds as part of the recovery work at the Kasumigaura region.
  • Cherry Blossom Girl: Her given name Cerisier is French for cherry tree. She's also associated with flowers and death since she was Dead All Along.
  • Dead All Along: The real Cerisier died during the battle of the previous Hexennacht ten years ago. The one that exists now is the manifestation of her regrets trying to fulfill her dying promise of filling the world with flowers and keeping her daughter company.
  • Disappears into Light: With the power that maintained her existence running out, Cerisier turns into ether light.
  • Everyone Calls Her "Barkeep": All her students call her Headmaster. Only her old friend Lisbeth calls her Cerisier.
  • Familiar: She's the Servant of her daughter Fleur.
  • Flower Motifs: Her spell circle is shaped like a flower.
  • Go Out with a Smile: She finally fades away while smiling, happy to have been able to protect her daughter as a mother should at the very end.
  • Good Parents: She's a very good mother to Fleur and when they fight together, Cerisier focuses entirely on defending Fleur from harm. She loves her daughter so much that she has stayed in the world of the living for ten years after her death because she doesn't want to leave Fleur all alone.
  • Green Thumb: Like her daughter, Cerisier uses flower spells.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Her daughter gets her blonde hair from her as well as the jovial and cheerful personality.
  • Half the Woman She Used to Be: It's implied the lower half of her real body was destroyed in the previous Hexennacht.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: She sometimes starts coughing, indicating a poor physical condition of some kind. Actually, she's already dead and is becoming harder for her lingering 'regrets' to maintain physical form.
  • Parent-Child Team: She's actually one half of the Rank 1 because she's a Servant, with the other being her daughter Fleur. Cerisier assumes a more defensive role while Fleur handles the offense.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: The real Cerisier cast one final spell before her death to give her lingering regrets a physical form. Her "copy" has managed to stay with the living for ten years, but being Fleur's Servant has used up so much of Cerisier's power that her existence is at its limit. Lisbeth assumes she won't last for the Hexennatch and indeed, Cerisier vanishes in the middle of Fleur's Ranker Battle against Mitsuru and Kagami.

  • Military Mage: She's a high-ranking military witch.
  • My Greatest Failure: When she found out the regrets of Cerisier had taken physical form, Lisbeth let it continue as if the Cerisier she knew was still alive. She came to regret it when she realized she had allowed Fleur to be trapped in the illusion that her mother was with her.
