The Detective Boys

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/643875_498829280158086_1326426437_n.jpg
From lower left to lower right: Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, Conan (center), Genta, and Haibara.

Consisting of Conan, Haibara, Mitsuhiko, Genta, and Ayumi, they are a Five-Man Band of kid detectives.

Mandatory Naming Note: Their group name comes from the group of the same name in Edogawa Ranpo's novels.

Dub Name Change: The Junior Detective League.

  • Badass Adorable: All of them are cute kids who often help bring criminals to justice. And while they may not be at Conan's level, they have had their share of awesome moments in the series (canon or non-canon).
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: Out of the boys, Genta is Big, Mitsuhiko is Thin, and Conan is Short.
  • Clear My Name: In "Missing Corpse Murder Case", the Detective Boys are branded as attention-seeking liars by Inspector Megure after they failed to find the bloodied corpse they have reported. After Tokyo MPD pulls back, the Detective Boys decide to restart an investigation on their own to clear their reputation.
  • Free-Range Children: The kids spend a lot of time wandering around without even nominal adult supervision. They regularly do things like take bus trips, canvas neighborhoods, and explore caves, forests and scary mansions alone. True, Conan and Ai are Older Than They Look, but almost any adult who isn't Professor Agasa doesn't know that since Conan and Ai look about seven.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: They are a group of 7-year-olds who are friends with the elderly Professor Agasa, adult Tokyo police, and main teenage characters (mostly Ran and Sonoko).
  • Kid Detective: They think of themselves as a detective group, hence the group name, but it's Conan that solves all their cases. Mitsuhiko does notice that Conan and Ai talk and act like adults, but he's unaware of their true idenities.
  • Limited Social Circle: They are rarely seen spending much time with classmates outside their group but Ayumi at least is shown with a list of her other friends. Justified with Ai and Conan, who simply don't have any reason to make more friends at elementary school.
  • Love Dodecahedron: Genta likes Ayumi, Mitsuhiko likes Ayumi and Ai, Ayumi likes Conan, Ai is believed to like Conan and Conan is Ran-sexual.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Despite the name, the group started with one Token Female, and now there are two girls. Averted in the Funimation dub.
  • She Is All Grown Up: OVA 9 has them all aged to their high school years. It turned out to be part of Conan's dream.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • They often refer to Shinichi as "Ran-oneesan's boyfriend".
    • All of them prefer that Takagi and Satou became a couple.
    • They all give a knowing, sly smirk to Agasa after his meeting with his First Love, Fusae Campbell-Kinoshita.
    • After discovering that Kobayashi is Shiratori's "girl of destiny", they all were anxious for them to become a couple.
    • Apparently, they are all for Heiji and Kazuha becoming a couple, since Conan told Heiji that all of them made their own copy of Heiji's confession to Kazuha.
  • Snooping Little Kid: The group together is mostly seen as this to grown-ups; particularly, the police department and Kogoro. They style themselves Kid Detectives, but aren't quite up to snuff without Conan or Haibara helping them. They do show potential though, when they try to beat Conan to solving a mystery. They still need help, but Hattori mostly dropped hints for them to work it out themselves. They also provide the occasional "Eureka!" Moment.
  • Tag Along Kid: Conan is pretty much followed by the three actual kids of the group, Mitsuhiko, Genta and Ayumi. Ai on rare occasions takes Conan's place here sometimes. Otherwise, she stands along side Conan.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Snarky Little Miss Badass Haibara is the Tomboy, while sweet and innocent Ayumi is the Girly Girl.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Ayumi was initially the only girl but the trope is played straight after Haibara joined the Detective Boys.

    Ayumi Yoshida

Ayumi Yoshida

Age: 6-7

Debut: File 17-The Mansion of Horror (Manga), Episode 1- Roller Coaster Murder Case (Anime)

Voiced by: Yukiko Iwai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img3_93.png

English Voice Actresses: Monica Rial (Funimation) / Janice Kawaye (TMS/Bang Zoom),
Spanish Voice Actresses:Erika Araujo (first Latin American Spanish dub), Claudia Mota (second Latin American Spanish dub, movies 1 and 2 only), Ximena Marchant (third Latin American Spanish dub), Geni Rey (first European Spanish dub), Pilar Mora (second European Spanish dub, first part), Marta Sáinz (second European Spanish dub, second part and movies)

"But, I... don't want to run! If I keep running, I won't win! I definitely won't!"

The one and only emotional girl of the Detective Boys before Ai Haibara joined the group later in the series.

  • Clingy Jealous Girl: She shows hostile reaction to any girl who is even mildly interested in Conan, saves for Rannote  and Ainote .
  • The Cutie: Most of the time she's a smiling cutie.
  • Dub Name Change: Amy Yeager.
  • Dude Magnet: Both Genta and Mitsuhiko have a crush on her.
  • First-Name Basis: Ayumi is the only child of the group who calls Haibara by her first name.
  • The Heart: She is the emotional center of the Detective Boys, with everyone else frequently drop whatever it was they are doing to protect her. She is also the most likely to be kidnapped or held hostages by the perpetrators.
  • Hopeless Suitor: For Conan, due to the latter's age problem. Though to her defense, it's more like admiration than a crush.
  • Nice Girl: Ayumi is a sweet and innocent girl and acts as the group's cheerful spirit.
  • Oblivious to Love: Ayumi is blissfully unaware that Mitsuko and Genta both have a huge crush on her.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Zigzagged. She is a Girly Girl and her hair band is usually pink. However, she is shown to be having quite a Tomboy streak, with most of her interests align with Genta and Mitsuhiko like video games, Yamen Kaiba or Godzilla movies.
  • Plucky Girl: She has a habit of confronting murderers or criminals much larger than her head on despite being scared out of her mind. Best demonstrated when she refused to run to seek help in the Old Blue Castle Murder case because her friends are still in trouble and the Find the Buttock Mark case where she wants to be present to identify the attempted murderer. Her courage is what inspired Haibara to refuse the Witness Protection Program.
  • Precocious Crush: An example of the child not being aware that said older crush is a young adult. Ayumi has a crush on Conan but he's actually a high school student who was shrunk by a pill.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She was the only girl of the group before Haibara joined.
  • Third-Person Person: In later chapters, Ayumi constantly refers to herself as such.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Pretty self explanatory seeing how any other major or secondary female character in the series is either a teenager or an adult not counting the shrunk Haibara and later Mary Sera.

    Genta Kojima

Genta Kojima

Age: 6-7

Hungarian Voice Actors: István Baráth

"My mom said it’s bad luck to waste even one grain of rice!"

The big kid of the group who enjoys to eat, but isn't the brightest of the bunch.

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When he noticed a video game accidentally found its way into his backpack, he became afraid that he would be arrested for theft. For theft and for such horrible crimes as "not washing the hands before lunch" and "not cleaning the classroom's blackboard."
  • Big Eater: Eats a lot for his age. Although he is fat.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has thick, square-shaped eyebrows.
  • Book Dumb: Genta is not very good at school and has difficulty with simple basic Japanese and math. Although, he is a first grade elementary student.
  • Bridal Carry: Give one to Haibara in Movie 5 to stop her Senseless Sacrifice.
  • Dumb Muscle: Seen to be the least intellectual of the group, but at least makes up for it for being the biggest and the strongest of the Detective Boys.
  • Dub Name Change: George Kaminski.note
  • Hopeless Suitor: Genta has a crush on Ayumi, but she has a crush on Conan, which makes her this as well given Conan's circumstances...
  • Hot Guy, Ugly Wife: His mother strongly resembles him while his father is drawn very similar to Yusaku Kudo - someone who is married to a world famous actress and is universally considered to be handsome.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Even though he is brash, outspoken and can be intimidating, Genta is actually very kind and dependable.
  • Meaningful Name: One of the kanjis of his first name means "plump, fat". He's also the fattest of his friends as well as a Big Eater.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • During the Tragedy of the Pier in Plain Sight case (episodes 366-367/volume 45), his uncharacteristic action of fully concentrating on fishing (to the point of almost skipping lunch) turns out to be a secret plan to catch a rare fish for Professor Agasa's birthday.
    • When he doesn't want lunch (chapter 303), his friends know something's wrong. He's afraid because someone tried to kill him.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The loud, tough Manly Man to Mitsuhiko's thoughtful, organized Sensitive Guy.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Genta gained his physical looks from his mother. The only trait he got from his father are the Big Ol' Eyebrows.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Unajuu, or eel on rice.

    Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya

Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya

Age: 6-7

Debut: File 17-The Mansion of Horror (Manga), Episode 1- Roller Coaster Murder Case (Anime)

Voiced by: Ikue Otani, Ai Orikasa (episodes 425-436, Movie 10)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/019.png

English Voice Actresses: Cynthia Cranz (Funimation) / Erika Harlacher (TMS/Bang Zoom
Spanish Voice Actresses:Ivette Gonzalez (first Latin American Spanish dub), Miguel Ángel Ruiz (second Latin American Spanish dub, movies 1 and 2 only), Carolina Araya (third Latin American Spanish dub), María Rosa Guillén (first European Spanish dub and first part of the second one), Blanca Rada (second European Spanish dub, second part, first apparitions), Gema Carballedo (second European Spanish dub, second part, rest of the series, and movies)

The lead boy before Conan joins the group who genuinely tries to provide Conan with legitimate feedback on cases that the group comes across; most of the time to no avail.

  • Adorably Precocious Child: Besides Conan and Ai, Mitsuhiko is the most mature of his friends.
  • Author Avatar: Gosho Aoyama has stated in an early interview that Mitsuhiko is modeled after his childhood self.
  • Covert Pervert: He is a genuinely respectful and sweet kid... who also joins in with Genta on looking at cute girl in swimsuits. And another time has him (with Genta) asking Conan if he saw Ayumi and Haibara naked.
  • A Day in the Limelight: There have been a few episodes where Mitsuhiko solves the case before even Conan pieces everything together. Episode 303, "The Victim Who Came Back", notably features his deductions.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Mitsuhiko has shown a dislike towards carrots.
  • Dub Name Change: Mitch Tennison.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Twice.
    • Mitsuhiko has a crush on Ayumi, but she has a crush on Conan, which makes her this as well given Conan's circumstances...
    • He later gains a crush on Haibara, but it obviously won't work out given her dilemma is the same as Conan's.
  • Nice Guy: Mitsuhiko has shown to be a consistently polite young man. Due to his strict and formal upbringing by his parents, he tends to be very formal towards his elders, addressing them (in Japanese) with the formal suffix "-san" without regard to the intimacy of their relationship.
  • Precocious Crush: Like Ayumi, Mitsuhiko has a crush on someone who is older than him but doesn't look it. In his case, it's Haibara who is an adult woman shrunken by the same pill that put Conan in his current form.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The thoughtful, organized Sensitive Guy to Genta's loud, tough Manly Man.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Him secretly filming Ai as Shiho after the latter took the antidote to save the Detective Boys from a burning Cabin and sending the video to Kogoro to find her again leads to the Black Organization catching wind of Shiho still being alive and the events of the Mystery Train arc.
  • Wise Beyond His Years: It can be argued that Mitsuhiko acts quite sharp and clever for his age. One episode even has HIM solving the case!
  • Youthful Freckles: Notable the only Detective Boy who has this.

Friends of Shinichi and Ran

     Heiji Hattori

Heiji Hattori

Age: 17

Debut: File 92-The Great Detective Of The West (Manga), Episodes 48-49-The Diplomat Murder Case Murder Case (Anime)

Voiced by: Ryō Horikawa, Kumiko Higa (Young)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img3_283.png
"Oh, I won’t be left behind. Hattori Heiji is here!"

Japanese Live-Action Actor: Tori Matsuzaka
English Voice Actors: Kevin M. Connolly (Funimation) / Lucien Dodge (TMS/Bang Zoom)
Spanish Voice Actors:Humberto Amor (first Latin American Spanish dub), Luciano Fox (third Latin American Spanish dub)

"Humans are suspicious and jealous creatures. When they see something perfect, they wanna find a flaw."

The high-school detective of Osaka who serves as Shin’ichi’s main rival. Heiji eventually learns of Shin’ichi becoming Edogawa Conan and decides to keep it a secret, but is mostly kept in the loop on the latest information regarding the Black Organization. He and Shin’ichi become close friends as the series moves along, and are always seen together when they're solving cases, or talking about girls.

Especially later on, a majority of cases whenever Heiji teams up with Shin’ichi deal with strange killings that involve the appearance of a renowned monster. He also becomes extremely determined to one-up Shin’ichi’s London confession to Ran by creating an even better setting to one day confess his love to his childhood friend, Kazuha.

Mandatory naming note: Hattori came from Inspector Hattori of Tantei Monogatari who worked with Kudō Shunsaku. Heiji came from Zenigata Heiji, a fictional police officer in the Edo era.

  • #1 Dime: At one time during their childhood, Heiji had had the unfortunate idea of locking himself and his friend Kazuha together with a set of old handcuffs which had no key to unlock it; as a result they involuntarily had to spend time together even on some rather intimate occasions (i.e., bathroom visits) before the cuffs could be removed. As a reminder of this 'closeness' and for good luck, Kazuha fashioned two identical lucky charms, each incorporating a chain link from the cuffs, which she and Heiji have been wearing ever since.
  • Aborted Declaration of Love: Heiji back tracks from his love confessions towards Kazuha initially out of shyness but later due to wanting to confess to her in a proper and romantic setting.
  • Academic Athlete: Heiji is both an excellent kendōka, meaning "someone who practices kendo", and a genius detective.
  • Accent Slip-Up: Despite being able to speak fluent English, Heiji cannot really speak in Tokyo-ben (standard Japanese) due to his thick accent.
Kazuha: HEIJI! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!? Your voice was just on TV! It was some weird Tokyo-ben but it was definitely your voice!
  • Accidental Pervert: He told Kazuha to take her clothes off. She was shocked for a moment, while Heiji was attempting to undo her clothes, and slapped him. The reason was that she was knocked out earlier with a stun-gun and he was looking for a small burn mark.
  • The Ace: Heiji is a man of many talents and hats. These include being a famous teen detective, Captain of his high school's kendo team and a Chick Magnet.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Initially, in the anime his eyes appeared dark green, but are now blue.
  • A Day in the Limelight: A few of his appearances have given him the central spotlight. These include but are not limited to The Naniwa Serial Murder Case, The Osaka Double Mystery - The Naniwa Swordsman and Toyotomi's Castle, Head-to-Head Match with the Black Organization: A Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night, Conan and Heiji ,Code of Love, The Kendo Tournament of Love and Mystery, Momiji Ōoka's Challenge, Shintōist Temple Case, Detective Play Director Murder Case, Movie 7 and Movie 21.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Heiji is referred to as “Hei-chan” by longtime family friend Goro Ohtaki.
  • Alliterative Name: Heiji Hattori. note
  • Almost Kiss: Heiji is almost kissed by Momiji when she lands on top of him, but she is interrupted by Conan, much to her dismay.
  • Always Second Best: When Heiji and Shin’ichi work together, they're each other's equal and will often arrive at the same conclusions. But when they compete with each other or their deductions differ, Shin’ichi usually wins. Recent cases have begun to subvert this, but usually with subjects Heiji specializes in - e.g. kendō.
  • Amateur Sleuth: Heiji is a 17-year-old detective from Osaka.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He's clearly Japanese, and he inherited his dark skin from his grandfather, but we don't know ultimately what that comes from.
  • Art Evolution: Heiji is one of the characters who noticeably changes as the series goes on. He ends up going from this to this.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Like Shin’ichi, he has a keen eye for details, and can spot any unusual aspects in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. He repeatedly demonstrates the ability to recall every detail of an investigation, and may have a photographic memory to manage such perfect recall so consistently. Heiji's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony.
  • Badass and Child Duo: This is the dynamic he appears to have with Conan, but in reality they are equally intelligent and the same age.
  • Badass Biker: Heiji has repeatedly shown phenomenal biking skills, usually in pursuit of a culprit or clues.
  • Badass Bookworm: Heiji has an extraordinarily broad and deep knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases. Come a fight, he can easily hold his own with Kendo.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Kazuha — they have a classic Slap-Slap-Kiss relationship and fell in love with one another at different points.
  • Best Friend: He has this dynamic with Kazuha since childhood and eventually he and Shin’ichi form this bond as well.
  • Betty and Veronica: The "Archie" for Kazuha's tomboyish, Hot-Blooded childhood friend "Betty" and Momiji's mysterious, girly, ojou "Veronica". Subverted in that the promise Heiji made with Momiji wasn't of marriage and he's already in love with Kazuha.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Heiji is a light-hearted jokester and loves to pull pranks (especially on Conan), but he's still a competent detective with master kendo skills.
  • Big Brother Mentor: In one arc, he lends the Detective Boys his help in attempting to solve a mystery before Conan does. He also has a photo he got of himself and Conan, tricked into bowing in front of him, to claim he's this to Conan in particular.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Heiji stands at 5’8 meanwhile as Conan, Shin’ichi is only 3’1.
  • Big Man on Campus: Heiji is well respected among his classmates and has many female admirers.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Inherited from his father.
  • Birds of a Feather:
  • Blade Run: Was able to pull this off when confronted by a murderer who was about to kill him.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Heiji shares this dynamic with Conan. Both are equally geniuses but Heiji is Hot-Blooded and The Prankster while Conan is cool and a Deadpan Snarker.
  • Book Smart: Heiji is very well-read and has studied a multitude of phenomena and subjects.
  • Brainy Brunette: Heiji inherited his father’s and his mother’s dark hair as well as his father’s genius intellect.
  • Bromantic Foil: With Shin’ichi: Heiji is a dark-skinned Osakan who lives with both of his parents, who are very strict (especially his dad whose approach is Tough Love). It took some time during the series, off-screen, to realize his feelings for Kazuha, and he's still not aware of her mutual feelings for him. Plus, Heiji has amazing kendo skills and is on his school's team; Shin’ichi is a light-skinned Tokyoite who lives (before turning into Conan) by himself, raised by laid-back parents (especially his dad). He fell for Ran first sight when they were preschoolers (way before she realized her feelings for him), and he's aware of her feelings for him. Also, while Shin’ichi has incredible soccer skills, he isn't (or wasn't) in his high school's soccer club.
  • Brutal Honesty: Like his rival, Shin’ichi, Heiji doesn't shy away from his honesty, no matter how insensitive it may be.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Heiji has a hard time expressing his feelings for Kazuha. The one time he did it was in the heat of the moment and he pretended it didn't happen; not out of nerves but because he wanted to express his feelings in a more romantic environment.
  • Casting Gag: Heiji’s live action actor is Tori Matsukawa, who had previously ly played another sword wielding hero.
  • Catchphrase: “Oi, Kudō.” Heiji says this to Conan in private as a greeting or to get his attention. There is a video compiling all the times he’s said it.
    • He always frequently says "Ahou," Kansai dialect version of baka.
  • Chained Heat: With Kazuha. When they were kids, they got handcuffed while playing with a pair that belonged to Heiji's policeman dad. They spent a whole a day like that, and when they were released Heiji kept an amulet made with a piece of said 'cuffs. Which would later become a Pocket Protector, and save Conan from being stabbed to death. As teenagers, they got handcuffed together again, this time held as hostages and almost murdered for being potential witnesses.
  • Character Development:
    • During the "Distinguished Family's Consecutive Accidental Death Case", Heiji questions Conan if they were right in stopping the culprit from committing suicide, leading to the latter responding that if a detective knows a criminal is about to commit suicide and does nothing to stop it, then the detective is no better than a murderer. Heiji takes to this heart, as evidenced by him stopping the serial murderer in the "The Naniwa Serial Murder Case" from committing suicide.
    • His relationship with Shin’ichi/Conan from his end. In Heiji's first appearance, he traveled all the way to Tokyo to challenge Shin’ichi Kudō to a deduction battle so he could win and show he was the superior detective of the two. After Shin’ichi solves the case (which included correcting Heiji's wrong assumptions), the Tokyoite detective then gives a short speech to the Osakan that there's no such thing as the superior or inferior detective, only the truth; Heiji is left both speechless and amazed. Throughout his subsequent appearances,(which involved deducing "Conan's" real identity), Heiji may have kept his competitiveness towards his fellow detective, but he now considers Shin’ichi/Conan to be his partner and best friend, willing to do anything to ensure his happiness and safety.
  • Character Tics: He usually wears his cap with its visor pointed backward, but during a case, he turns the visor forward. At the end of whatever case he's on, Heiji turn the visor backwards again.
    • In File 1020, it's mentioned that he can't stand air conditioners, and can't sleep without a fan on.
  • Chick Magnet: He has shown to be popular with girls due to his good looks, position as kendo captain at his high school, and his fame as a high school detective.
    • The most prominent girl who is attracted to him is Kazuha, who is Heiji's main love interest.
    • Natsuki Koshimizu from the "Detective Koshien" arc took an interest in Heiji given her statement to him about liking his Hot-Blooded nature.
    • During one of his kendo tournaments, several girls tried to flirt with him but he had switched his gear with another team member to make a last minute call to Conan to visit his match.
    • In the non-canon ''Magic File 4: Osaka Okonomiyaki Odyssey'' several girls came to ask for his autograph.
    • In the non-canon OVA 9, he was referred to as a "lady killer", but that turned out to be Conan's dream.
    • Momiji Ōoka is dead set on marrying Heiji.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Kazuha — they've known each other since they were kids and now have romantic feelings for each other.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: Subverted. Throughout most of the 21st movie, everyone believes Heiji made one with Momiji when they were children. In actuality, he won against her in a karuta game, and she was crying about her loss, and in an attempt to console her, he asked her to make a promise with him that she would get stronger. However, Momiji misheard what Heiji said, and thought it was a proposal.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Downplayed. Heiji is able to deduct what kind of swimsuits girls are wearing, but that's about as far it goes. He's nowhere near as bad as Kogoro.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: If he can prevent another death, Heiji will do all he can to prevent it.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Heiji has attracted female attention without trying or noticing. Girls who have expressed an attraction towards him include Kazuha, Natsuki Koshimizu, Momiji Ōoka and nameless background fangirls.
  • Cool Bike: Heiji rides around on what some fans speculate is a green Kawasaki KDX, which comes in handy on many occasions.
  • Cool Helmet: Heiji never rides his motorcycle without a stylish edged helmet.
  • Covert Pervert: Heiji has shown to have the ability to deduce a woman's swimsuit without actually looking at it.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Like how Shin’ichi acts towards Ran, Heiji really doesn't like it when a guy looks like he has an interest in Kazuha. When this happens, Heiji is unable to concentrate on the case at hand and he doesn't even like it when she talks about or talks to another man in a perceived flirtatious manner (i.e. Kazuha calling Shin’ichi Kudō "really smart", talking to a police officer for directions).
  • Cute Bookworm: Heiji’s favorite author is Ellery Queen and he us quite the looker.
  • Declaration of Protection: Heiji makes a silent solemn promise to Kazuha that she will never get hurt when she's with him.
Heiji: "Fool. You’re too naive. I will never… never… let you be hurt."
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Heiji's friendship with Shin’ichi began after the latter managed to get the right deduction in the murder case in the former's first appearance.
  • Determinator: Not only did he refuse to let go of Kazuha while they were hanging off the edge of a cliff after she'd stabbed him in the hand to try and make him let go of her, he somehow managed to pull themselves back up off screen.
  • Distressed Dude: In Episodes 323-324 Heiji Hattori's Desperate Situation!, Heiji, Kazuha, and a man named Kusukawa are held hostage in an attic of attorney Misari Ito's home.
  • Ditzy Genius: While a bit controversial, Heiji is sometimes thought as such. He's a brilliant detective, but can't for the life of him remember to call Shin’ichi 'Conan' when they're in public. He also has a bit of a Hair-Trigger Temper, particularly when talking to his childhood friend Kazuha. So much so that one fan fanfiction diagnosed Heiji with Asperger's Syndrome in a fictionalized psych profile.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: In the The Naniwa Serial Murder Case, Heiji is disturbed enough by a recent nightmare of Shin’ichi dying that he loans Conan the charm Kazuha gave him...and the dream turned out to be completey accurate, and the charm did protect Conan. Literally.
  • Dub Name Change: Harley Hartwell.
  • Deuteragonist: Every time Heiji makes an appearance, this is the role he plays, being a secondary detective and being able to perfectly keep up with Conan during the mystery.
  • Embarrassing Cover Up: When Sera is about to find out about Shin’ichi, who has just recently shrunk back into Conan, Heiji hides him in his backpack. Sera is suspicious about his very large backpack and demand to know what's in it. To prevent her from doing so, Heiji has to convince her that the backpack is full of his Hentai magazines.
  • Encyclopaedic Knowledge: Like Conan, Heiji has a vast knowledge of many things that would be important when solving a case.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When he figures out a case (usually at the same time as Conan) Heiji’s borrows his friend’s phrase.
Heiji: I see. So that’s how it was!
  • Facepalm: He does this at the end of Chapter 1118 upon realizing he forgot to confess his feelings to Kazuha.
  • Fanboy: Heiji is a big fan of Ellery Queen.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Despite him knowing the value and necessity of remaining calm in the face of a crime, Heiji tends to be impulsive at times, which tends to cloud his judgment a little. This was discussed directly in the "Three Days with Heiji Hattori" case, when Saguru Hakuba (another Amateur Sleuth) accused Heiji of being a poor detective for disrupting a crime scene in his rush to see if the victim could still be saved. Also, unlike Shin’ichi, Heiji seems to be more competitive and hot-blooded while solving a case, which sometimes leads him into making a wrong deduction (i.e. the case in his first appearance).
    • He's shown to have a habit of being forgetful. He tends to call Conan "Kudo" within hearing range of anyone (especially Ran) who's unaware of who Conan really is and Shin’ichi constantly has to remind him when he makes that mistake. At the end of Chapter 1118, he completely forgets to confess his feelings to Kazuha despite having the perfect environment and no interruptions for him to finally do so. He facepalms out of dismay when he realizes his mistake as he and Kazuha head back home.
  • Female Fighter, Male Handler: Kazuha is a formidable aikido expert, while Heiji is her best friend and supports her in his own way.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: With Shin’ichi Kudō/Conan Edogawa — whenever they work together in a case they will often finish each other's deductions, demonstrating not only abilities as detectives, but also their familiarity with each other.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Shin’ichi, once Heiji figures out that Kudō and Conan are the same person. They're close friends who clearly respect each other (their minds are often completely in-sync whenever they do work together on cases), but Kudō's ego and Heiji's competitiveness occasionally ends up with them competing to see who can solve a case first.
  • Friendship Trinket: The good luck charm he and Kazuha have is a testament to their closeness.
  • Friend to All Children: His close friendship with Conan make people think this about him.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: If your name isn’t Shin’ichi/Conan, Ran, Kogorō, Kazuha, Heizō and Shizuka, Otaki, Sera, Megure, Takagi, Okita, Iori or Momiji, Heiji has probably never had a serious one-on-one conversation with you.
  • Game of Nerds: While Heiji is a kendōka, meaning "someone who practices kendo", he is a massive fan of baseball and called Babe Ruth the “God of Baseball” in Miracle at Koshien Ball Park! The Defiants Face the Dark Demon arc.
  • Genius Bruiser: Downplayed on the Bruiser half. Heiji is a skilled kendōka, his primary weapon is always his mind.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar. Despite his high intellect, Heiji is able to socialize perfectly with his classmates and is very popular.
  • Good Luck Charm: Heiji always has his chain link on him somewhere. Once the cast begins to use cell phones Heiji straps his charm to his phone.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars:
    • Heiji has a scar on the back of his hand where his would-be girlfriend Kazuha stabbed him with a pen when they were hanging off a cliff, in a desperate attempt to make him let go of her hand... so as to make it more likely he'd make it to the top without the extra weight. He still held on, and they both lived to tell.
    • He has a scar behind the left ear from being hit during an Oyodo competition.
  • Good with Numbers. Heiji can perform difficult calculations in his head almost instantly. Like the other "genius" detectives, Heiji has shown himself to have an eidetic memory, capable of remembering complex letter and number sequences at only a glance, such as when he was able to solve a code in his head during the Heiji Hattori's Desperate Situation! arc, and even reproduce another message using the same code to text to Conan.
  • Great Detective: Like his fellow rival and close friend, Shin’ichi, Heiji's deduction skills have become well-known enough for him to be nicknamed the "Great Detective of the West".
  • Green-Eyed Epiphany: Downplayed. The biggest moments where Heiji expresses concern over Kazuha that isn't platonic is when she is seen in a perceived romantic moment with another man. But, due to his own cluelessness, he is unaware (at least, initially) of that his jealousy is not platonic as shown during the "Conan and Heiji's Deduction Magic" murder case. However, it's still unknown exactly how Heiji realized his romantic feelings for Kazuha; the seventh movie is a possible interpretation, but it's up in the air if it is considered canon or non-canon.
  • Guile Hero: Heiji’s strongest weapon is his mind and he uses it to solve cases that leave even the police clueless.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: His spiky hair has been his main hairstyle since childhood.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Matches perfectly with his hot blooded nature. Heiji has a tendency to snap at people, even when they haven't done anything wrong (i.e. he yells at Kazuha for suggesting he take a break from a case and eat).
  • Ham and Deadpan Duo: Heiji is eccentric and bubbly whereas Conan is a know-it-all sarcastic teenager.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Heiji is a genius kendōka. He may disable criminals using an improvised bokken.
  • Heroic Lineage: In one of the non-canon movies, Heiji states that he gets his bravery from his mother.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Becomes this with Shin’ichi/Conan over time — even though they still have a rivalry, they have a brotherly like relationship with one another. They go to each other for the other's opinion on their deductions and Heiji has, on several occasions, declared himself to be Shin’ichi’s best friend or brother.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Heiji will often tell Kazuha to stay out of his investigations because she'll get in the way. In reality, it's because he doesn't want her in danger.
  • Hot-Blooded: Heiji is hotblooded and impulsive to the freaking MAX. It's both a pro (he works nonstop to solve cases and bring justice thanks to his determination) and a con (he either jumps into conclusions or puts himself in needless trouble for it). He frequently called out on this by anyone he meets.
  • Humans Are Flawed: To quote the man himself: "Humans are suspicious and jealous creatures. When they see something perfect, they wanna find a flaw." There's some interesting irony in this statement, because Hattori says it in criticism of a client who wants her future daughter-in-law investigated, but Hattori is only meeting the client because he himself has barged in on the Mōri Detective Agency out of suspicion and jealousy towards the validity of Kudō Shin’ichi’s sterling reputation. The quote not only expresses Hattori's perspective on humanity but directly lampshades Hattori's own personal flaws.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Although he frequently mocks Kazuha for her superstitions and enthusiasm for good-luck charms, Heiji has several times revealed that he puts more trust in them than he would admit. He once dreamed of Shin’ichi being murdered, and out subsequently insisted that Conan wear his omamori, the good luck charm Kazuha gave him. The omamori ended up saving Shin’ichi’s life by deflecting a knife blow, but Heiji, without his usual protection, was shot in the stomach. In another case, Ran hung a teruterubozu, a charm that's supposed to ensure good weather, in the window so that Conan would have good weather for his field trip the next day. Heiji, however, got up in the middle of the night to take down the teruterubozu so that Conan's field trip would be rained out and he could accompany Heiji on an investigation of the "The Red Horse within the Flames".
  • Iconic Item: Ever since his first appearance, Heiji takes his hat with him wherever he goes. Kazuha is shown wearing it in two openings, Opening 14-START and Opening 25-Revive and he lets Shin’ichi wear it in the Murderer, Shin’ichi Kudō arc to hide his face.
  • Identical Grandson: Heiji has dark, brown skin which he claims is inherited from his grandfather.
  • Identical Stranger: Downplayed. It's very clear on how to tell him and Shin’ichi ichi apart due to their different skin colors, hairstyles, and speech patterns. But given how Aoyama-Sensei draws attractive characters, they bare a striking resemblance. And when Heiji disguised himself as Shin’ichi via putting on make-up, changing his hairstyle and voice pattern to alleviate Ran's suspicions of Conan being Shin’ichi, they do look a lot alike; see here.
  • The Idiot from Osaka: Prankster sub-type.
  • Idiot Hero: Zigzagged. Heiji has one of the sharpest minds in the series, but he's also Hot-Blooded and barely conceals Shin’ichi’s secret.
  • Improvised Weapon: Heiji on one occasion uses a staff instead of a sword to fend off an enemy.
  • Insufferable Genius: Downplayed. Like Shin’ichi, Heiji has a habit of calling people idiot if they do or say something he finds stupid.
  • In the Blood: Like his father before him, Heiji is a genius with quick wits.
  • Intergenerational Friendship :Ohtaki is a friend of the Hattori family and their bond is much more closer than Shin’ichi and Inspector Megure.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Heiji makes a hilarious threat against his father, he does have every right to be angry with Heizō for manipulating Heiji (and Conan) during a particularly dangerous murder investigation.
  • Jock Dad, Nerd Son: Inverted with Heiji and Heizō. Heiji is an athletic Kendo Team Captain while his father is Superintendent Supervisor of Osaka Prefectural Police Department.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Heiji has been noted on his short fuse, arrogance, an awful sense of sensitivity, and, the most of all, his Hot-Blooded nature. But there's no denying how far he would go to protect his loved ones; besides that, his bravery, sense of justice, and Chronic Hero Syndrome tendencies are on par with Shin’ichi/Conan.
  • Kendo Team Captain: Heiji is is the fifth position, or taisho, and captain of his high school Kendo team. He has apparently done pretty well against the famously tough members of the Osaka PD.
  • Lamarck Was Right: Heiji inherited his intelligence from his genius police officer father Heizō.
  • Last-Name Basis: Notably he has this dynamic with Shin’ichi. While Conan has called him by his first name, usually joking, Heiji has never done the same. His “Oi, Kudō.” greeting is essentially his Catchphrase.
  • Like Parent, Like Child:
    • Heiji has been noted at different times to have inherited his sharp wit from his father.
    • In one of the non-canon movies, he stated he inherited his bravery from his mother.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: While Heiji is aware of the existence of the Black Organization, Conan keeps him in the dark about most of the information he learns, most likely for his safety.
  • Lovable Jock: Downplayed. He's on his high school's kendo team and is the captain. However, while he's nowhere near being a Jerk Jock, his arrogant and hot-tempered attitude makes it hard to see his "lovable" side.
  • Love Confession: Wants to give a proper, romantic setting to confess his feelings for Kazuha.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Heiji’s intelligence takes a massive nosedive if Heiji is having romantic trouble with Kazuha. Even Conan Lampshaded this.
Conan: Come to think of it, he did become a crap detective when Kazuha-chan got involved at Ebisubashi Bridge in Osaka.
  • Master Swordsman: Heiji is an expert kendōka and uses his skills in his cases at times.
  • Minored In Ass Kicking: Downplayed. He is more hotheaded than the other high school detectives (a fact remarked upon in the series), but he always keeps using his brains, confronting armed killers with his logical conclusions rather than just knocking them out and calling the police. Attack him or his friends, though, and you'll find out just who can beat the entire police kendo club of Osaka. Or stop a sword with a cell phone.
  • Mirror Character: Heiji is almost the same character as pre-Conan Shin’ichi, being a famous teenage Amateur Sleuth who plays a sport, loves mystery stories, and has a mutual crush on his childhood friend. The big differences are what sport they play, who their favorite authors are, and that Heiji is a textbook Stock Shōnen Hero while Shin’ichi is calm and snarky.
  • Mystery Magnet: The first time he came to Tokyo along with Kazuha, he noted that whenever "he" (Conan) is around, a case will happen. Of course, most of Heiji's appearances involve Conan stumbling on cases. However, Heiji often runs into cases that involve his mother's friends (although they also involve Conan, including the one case where Heiji didn't appear until it's already been resolved), and Heiji does attract a lot of monster-related cases.
  • Named After Someone Famous: Hattori’s name came from Inspector Hattori of Tantei Monogatari who worked with Kudo Shunsaku. Heiji came from Zenigata Heiji, a fictional police officer in the Edo era.
  • Nerves of Steel: Heiji has been in numerous nerve wracking and life threatening situations, yet he usually manages to keep a cool head.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: Heiji is the Roughish Male where Shin’ichi is the Noble Male. Shin’ichi is, while on the job, calm, reserved and focused. Heiji is Hot-Blooded, feisty and has a mischievous streak a mile long.
  • No Social Skills: Possibly even worse than Shin’ichi/Conan's. He once got excited over the prospect of someone being dead, without taking into account the potential feelings of the victims's loved ones or just the proper decency to show someone who has just been murdered. PlayedWith in that he gets along with his classmates just fine and is very popular.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: He made repeated use of this, particularly drawing on his "Osakanisms" to cover up whenever he uses Conan's real name by accident.
  • Oblivious to Love: Heiji is apparently, utterly incapable of realizing his feelings for Kazuha or vice versa; even going so far as to believe the jealousy he felt when she flirted with a magician was just a leader's concern for his follower. Till Conan and Heiji, Code of Love, anyway.
  • Patriotic Fervor: Heiji is known for his pride as an Osaka citizen and for his thick Osakan accent, which has been pointed out and sometimes made fun numerous times. However, Heiji holds his head high and is always one to brag about the greatness of Osaka, especially when Conan comes to visit.
  • The Philosopher: Heiji’s quote about humans being jealous is surprisingly profound as well as another quote about the time one has in life.
Heiji:Life is limited, that's why it's so precious. Since there's a limit, we try our best to live.
  • Photographic Memory: Like the other "geniuses" of Detective Conan, Heiji has shown himself to have an eidetic memory, capable of remembering complex letter and number sequences at only a glance, such as when he was able to solve a code in his head during the "Heiji and Kazuha in Grave Danger" arc, and even reproduce another message using the same code to text to Conan.
  • The Prankster: Likes to pull childish, but harmless tricks on either Conan/Shin’ichi or Kazuha.
  • Pride: As a detective and when talking about Osaka, for either trying to one-up Shin’ichi/Conan in deduction or bragging about how Osaka is better than Tokyo, respectively.
  • Private Detective: Heiji will tackle a case handed to him, but he's more of a Amateur Sleuth.
  • Progressively Prettier: Like most of the main cast, Heiji becomes cuter as the series progresses with his formerly elongated face filling out.
  • Red Baron: Known as "The Great Detective of the West" for being a famous and skilled Amateur Sleuth from Osaka.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The rash, Hot-Blooded Red Oni to Shinichi/Conan's calm, somewhat more standoffish Blue Oni.
  • Renaissance Man: Heiji is a detective, kendōka and a motorcycle rider.
  • The Rival: Heiji was introduced as “The Great Detective of the West”, Shin’ichi’s equal from Osaka. The two competed in every case to see who would come out on top. Eventually they mellowed out and became best friends but that competitive streak they share has never disappeared.
  • Running Gag:
    • Heiji always forgets that he shouldn’t call Conan “Kudō”.
    • Cases with Heiji usually involve falling corpses, stock horror monsters (not real ones) or a combination of the two.
    • Heiji tends to get physically roughed up during some of the cases he gets involved in (either Played for Laughs or Played for Drama).
  • Save the Villain: Adopts this mindset after hearing Conan's poignant reason as to why he refused to let the murder culprit from "Bond of Fire" case commit suicide.
  • Scars Are Forever: He has a scar behind his left ear from being hit during an Oyodo competition in episode 263, The Osaka Double Mystery - The Naniwa Swordsman and Toyotomi's Castle.
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: For some time, these were all the cases Conan and Heiji solved together. This being Detective Conan, they were much more lethal than the Trope Namer ‘s hoaxes.
  • Secret-Keeper: He was the first one to deduct that Conan's true identity was Shin’ichi Kudo. A rather bad one, however, constantly blurting out Conan's real identity and then scrambling to cover it up.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Shin’ichi’s Sensitive Guy. Zig-Zagged somewhat: Heiji is more emotionally driven due to his Hot-Blooded nature, but he's also noticeably more thick when it comes to appreciating someone's feelings. Shin’ichi on the other hand isn't a very sensitive person as far as his own emotions go, but knows when to keep his head cool and in a romantic sense, figured out his feelings for Ran first; a rarity in Shonen protagonists. He also is fairly good at deducing what other people are feeling when he makes an effort to observe them.
  • Sherlock Scan: As one of the series foremost detectives, this ability is a must.
  • Shipper on Deck: Even with his teasing, Heiji genuinely wants Shin’ichi (Conan) and Ran to become a couple. He once suggested that Shin’ichi tell Ran the truth about the Black Organization to ease both of their suffering.
  • Signature Headgear: Heiji very frequently is not seen without his Osaka cap, to support the local Osaka baseball team.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Heiji mostly has this towards Kazuha. He finds other women attractive but is completely oblivious towards any romantic or sexual advances, due to his heart belonging to someone else.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: His whole dynamic with Kazuha — They argue and call each other idiot, but they have a deep connection and love each other dearly.
  • Southern-Fried Genius: A Japanese version. Heiji is an Osakan genius teenage detective.
  • Spirited Competitor: Heiji possesses a competitive spirit that is first seen in his introductory episode and other times when someone else (usually Conan) engage in a deduction battle.
  • Stereotype Flip: In Japanese media and pop culture, Osakans are usually slow but well-meaning and fun. Heiji has quite a mischievous streak, but is also a brilliant detective and one of the very few characters who have solved a case before Conan, multiple times.
  • Stock Shōnen Hero: PlayedWith: Heiji has a lot of similarities to this trope but is ultimately too smart, isn’t a Big Eater and ultimately has no desire To Be a Master.
  • Straight Man and Wise Guy: The light-hearted, jokester Wise Guy to Shin’ichi’s serious, deadpan Straight Man.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Heiji's face is more align with his mother's. The only differences are his dark skin and Big Ol' Eyebrows, traits he inherited from his father.
  • Strong Girl, Smart Guy: Like Shin’ichi and Ran, Kazuha is a 2-dan in aikido while Heiji is a Teen Genius.
  • Suggestive Collision: Chapter 1090 has Momiji trip and land on top of Heiji and he accidentally grabs her breast. This prompts her to try and kiss him but Conan interrupts.
  • Taking the Bullet: In Movie 17, Heiji saves Kazuha’s life by diving in front of a bullet for her. Luckily, he is mostly unharmed.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Like Shin’ichi, Heiji is a Chick Magnet, roughly the same height as his rival, and has black hair.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Fits the criteria for Tall, Dark, and Handsome and also has been known to make sarcastic remarks.
  • Teen Genius: Heiji has shown himself to have an eidetic memory, capable of remembering complex letter and number sequences at only a glance, such as when he was able to solve a code in his head during the "Heiji Hattori's Desperate Situation!" arc, and even reproduce another message using the same code to text to Conan.
  • Thanks for the Mammary: In Chapter 1090 "The Truth Behind The Door", Momiji tries to help Conan and Heiji who are cutting a pizza. She ends up tripping and lands on top of Heiji, who accidentally cops a feel.
  • Thinking Tic: He usually wears his cap with its visor pointed backward, but during a case, he turns the visor forward. At the end of whatever case he's on, Heiji turn the visor backwards again.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: The aptly titled Detective Conan: Magic File 4-Osaka Okonomiyaki Odyssey shows Heiji really enjoys okonomiyaki.
  • Tsundere: Given his hot-blooded and jerkass tendencies towards Kazuha while trying to hide his feelings for her, Heiji is definitely a Type A Tsundere.
  • Twice Shy: Once he realizes he’s attracted to Kazuha, this is what is their dynamic becomes.
  • Undying Loyalty: Like Shin’ichi/Conan, Heiji will do anything to protect his loved ones from harm.
  • Unknown Rival: Downplayed. Heiji takes his and Conan’s rivalry much more seriously than the latter, but Conan still enjoys competing against him.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Beside his baseball cap, Heiji changes his clothes in seemingly every appearance. However, he does wear jeans jackets quite often.
  • Unrequited Love Switcheroo: Downplayed. Once Heiji realizes his feelings, he becomes more proactive while Kazuha becomes more reactive and passive.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Gender-Inverted. Heiji has shown his extreme dislike of men flirting with Kazuha, but if anyone so much as threatens her, or makes him think she's being threatened, Heiji will kick their ass. In fact, this is what led to Heiji's confession.
Heiji: "Whatcha doin' to MY Kazuha!!?"
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: On certain occasions, Shin’ichi/Conan and Heiji constantly getting into each other's nerves due to their snarking behaviour and also had treated a few cases as contests, but most of the time they are the perfet Bash Brothers where both require each others' help in solving cases and there are also times where Conan and Heiji looked after each others' backs.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Implied. While their relationship isn't thoroughly explored, Heiji wants to be a detective like his father.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Like many, many characters in this series he has this dynamic with his best friend since childhood Kazuha.
  • Wooden Katanas Are Even Better: A skilled kendōka would certainly think so.
  • Wrong-Name Outburst: Heiji seemingly forgets he cannot call Conan “Kudō” every single time they meet.

Spanish Voice Actors:Guillermo Romano (first Latin American Spanish dub), Jaime Vega (second Latin American Spanish dub, movies 1 and 2 only), Mario Santander (third Latin American Spanish dub), Tasio Alonso (first European Spanish dub), Javier Amilibia (second European Spanish dub, first part), Salvador Serrano (second European Spanish dub, second part and movies)

Shinichi's next door neighbor who makes a living developing odd inventions; some of which are put to use by Shinichi throughout the series. Shinichi appears to have the utmost trust in him, having no problem of revealing his identity to Agasa only moments after being shrunk by the APTX-4869 pill.

Later on, most of his appearances amount to playing the adult who looks after the Detective Boys, becoming the unintentional guardian of Ai Haibara (aka Shiyo Miyano) when said character shows up at Shinichi's doorstep, and providing insight for Shinichi to help combat the Black Organization.

During most cases that involve the Detective Boys, Shinichi will force Agasa into the spotlight to explain the case at hand.

Mandatory Naming Note: "Agasa" is the Engrish pronunciation of Agatha Christie.Phonological Note

  • Absent-Minded Professor: Most Triumphant Japanese Example.
  • Badass Bookworm: While Professor Agasa doesn't engage in any violence in the series, he does create all of Conan's helpful and amazing gadgets.
  • Big Fancy House: The mansion located next to the just-as-big Kudo home.
  • Big Fun: A chubby old man with a heart of gold and a cheerful disposition.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Has thick, square-shaped eyebrows.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: His number one talent is inventing.
  • Characterization Marches On: The early volumes try to play up Dr. Agasa as a Bungling Inventor, with Shinichi saying to his face that his lab's turned out nothing but junk. Later volumes? Intelligence agents flat-out admit he's making toys MI6 could only dream of, and everyone (except Ai) treats him with unflinching respect.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Fusae, but it's downplayed given that while they were each other's First Love they haven't made any progress in their relationship in a romantic fashion.
  • Dub Name Change: Hershel Agasa.
  • Einstein Hair: Matches perfectly with his inventing skills.
  • First Love: To his childhood friend, Fusae.
  • Friend to All Children: Frequently takes the Detective Boys out for fun.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: He made Conan all those assistive technology gadgets.
  • Herr Doktor: Drives a German car, a Käfer. In the dub, he has a German accent.
  • No Name Given: Averted, but not with a bit of Ass Pull. His given name, given as Hiroshi only later on, is an Alternate Character Reading of Hakase, the Japanese term for the title of Doctor, while devoid of the latter's connotations.
  • Older Sidekick: To Shinichi. Despite being significantly older than the teenage Shinichi, Agasa often follows the young one's lead.
  • Only Friend: He was this to his childhood friend, Fusae Campbell Kinoshita; he was the only one among their peers who didn't viciously tease her about her mixed ancestry.
  • Parental Substitute:
    • Acts as a sort-of, second father-figure towards Shinichi, to a degree. His parents are still alive, but live in New York.
    • Even moreso for Haibara, who lives in his house and unlike Shinichi, no longer has any real family. She grows to love him like a real father and often tries to protect him above anyone else. He's even her cellphone background picture! It turns out he knew her dead parents.
  • Running Gag: In the movies, there's always a scene dedicated to him coming up with a quiz for the Detective Boys that usually have answers that are silly homo-phonic puns, much to Conan and Haibara's chagrin.
  • Secret-Keeper: With the distinction of being the first person ever who found out about Shinichi shrinking into a child, who later became "Conan Edogawa".
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Shinichi/Ran.
  • Smart Ball: Pocketed it. Shinichi said he never invented anything useful right in the beginning, yet he eventually became one of the most Gadgeteer Genius in anime without any further explanation (to the point where actual secret agents express jealousy at his skills). That being said, several of his inventions still do malfunction from time to time, but those are few and far between.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Sports circular glasses and is a brilliant inventor.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Fusae Campbell Kinoshita — She disappeared one day when they were children and when they meet up again, Poor Communication Kills comes again when Fusae lies about having a husband because she thought the Detective Boys were his grandchildren and that he didn't remember her; however, Agasa tells her in his own way that he never forgot her. And then she leaves for mysterious reasons, thinking she won't see him again for another 10 years.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Agasa has a special love for pasta.
  • Younger Than They Look: He's 53-years-old, but you wouldn't know that just be looking at him. You could easily mistake him for being somewhere in his 70s.

    Sonoko Suzuki

Sonoko Suzuki

Age: 16 (Anime) 17 (Manga)

Debut: File 40-The Mysterious... Bandaged Man (Manga), Episode 6- Valentine Murder Case (Anime)

Voiced by: Naoko Matsui

Japanese Live-Action Actresses:Mayuko Iwasa , Sayaka Akimoto
English Voice Actresses: Laura Bailey (EN, Funimation) / Jennie Kwan note  (EN, TMS/Bang Zoom)
Spanish Voice Actresses:Rocío Gallegos (first Latin American Spanish dub), Sandra Pavón (second Latin American Spanish dub, movies 1 and 2 only), Josefina Becerra (third Latin American Spanish dub), Aurora Ferrándiz (second European Spanish dub, first part), Mercedes Espinosa (second European Spanish dub, second part and movies)

"Are you an idiot? So what if friendship is unreliable and fragile! That way when you communicate with your heart, you can feel the warmth inside. If it were as hard as some chattering iron plate, you wouldn’t feel the warmth, y’know?"

The love-seeking daughter of a very rich family, and Ran's best friend. On rare occasions, mostly from cases that involves just her and Ran, Shinichi will put Sonoko to sleep, and talk as her in a manner similar to how he uses Kogoro as the scapegoat for explaining the case at hand.

She eventually gains an actual boyfriend in the form of an international karate champion, Makoto Kyogoku, but still finds time to flirt with other men (Kaitou Kid in particular) to compensate for the fact that she can't handle being in a long-distance relationship.

  • Action Survivor: Became a victim of the case of the week quite a few time. Despite having no combat skill, she managed to hold them off until someone rescue her by doing things such as biting, throwing her phone etc.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed. In the earlier parts of the manga and anime, Sonoko was an avid anti-shipper for Shinichi and Ran, often trying to find a suitor for the latter before supporting them, but keeps failing. However, in the Episode One special, Sonoko still keeps her Jerk with a Heart of Gold personality, but starts off as a Shipper on Deck for the couple from the get go.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Subverted. While she's a big fan of Kaitou Kid, it doesn't go anywhere deep and she's already in love with Makoto.
  • Alliterative Name: Sonoko Suzuki. Also counts with her dubbed name (Serena Sebastian).
  • Alone with the Psycho: At least twice.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Sonoko is nearly obsessed with handsome men and is in a relationship with one, but some of her dialogue towards Ran implies she may like her or at finds her attractive. And in a non-canon OAV, Sonoko gives Kazuha a kiss on the cheek during their karaoke session.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: The girl's a Genki Girl who borders on Brainless Beauty, but she strongly believes in those she cares for and even if she can't fight like Ran does, she'll do what she can to protect them and she'll expect you to appreciate your loved ones too.
  • Brainless Beauty: Borderline case. She's a pretty but ditzy rich girl.
  • Bully Hunter: As a child, Sonoko used to defend Ran from bullies.
  • Butt-Monkey: She really has extraordinarily bad luck at times.
  • Characterization Marches On: Sonoko was avid in finding a man better than Shinichi for Ran, believing he wasn't good enough for her. A few chapters/episodes later, and she is teasingly calling them "husband and wife".
  • Childhood Friends: She has known both Ran and Shinichi since they were all four-years-old.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Downplayed. It's not shown a lot (unlike with Ran and Kazuha), but in a few cases, she's shown to send Makoto giftsnote  ahead of other girls because she fears Makoto may potentially be taken away by other women through exploiting his sincerity.
  • Damsel in Distress: Catches the Distress Ball more than once.
  • Dub Name Change: Serena Sebastian.
  • Fake Ultimate Hero: Gets a bit of this treatment due to the fact that she's the most common person Conan knocks out and solves cases through when Kogoro is unavailable. As a result she's come to be thought of as a Genius Ditz in spite of the fact that she doesn't even have a fraction of Kogoro's deductive skills, let alone Conan's.
  • Family Theme Naming: Sonoko shares a syllable with her older sister Ayako and mother Tomoko.
  • Fangirl: Goes crazy when Kaitou Kid makes an appearance.
  • The Fashionista: Especially seen in one case where Sonoko identifies the victims as belonging to the ganguro fashion sub culture upon seeing their pictures. She even distinguished what kind of ganguro they were!
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: A downplayed example. Sonoko isn't necessarily irresponsible but she's more flighty, loud, and sillier than her older sister, Ayako.
  • Forehead of Doom: Often noted to have a big forehead.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Sonoko has always had her chin-length hairstyle since childhood.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Ran Mouri's closest friend since childhood; they have always been loyal best friends who can confide in one another about their problems.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: One of her biggest desires is to have a genuine connection to people who aren't just using her for financial gain. One of her most longstanding dreams is to be able to eat ramen with her friends after school (a dream Conan noted to be quite humble for someone of her status) despite being able to eat a lot of different foods through her family.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • In general, Sonoko may be overly harsh but she's not wrong about Shinichi's character faults.
    • After Shinichi makes his Love Confession to Ran during the London arc, the latter doesn't properly respond despite having the same feelings for him. When Ran tells Sonoko about this, the latter is peeved at her best friend and chastises her over not doing something similar at the time even though Ran has always been hoping for that moment.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: With all of her shallowness and childish fits, she really cares for Ran, Makoto, her friends and family.
  • Lady and Knight: The Lady to Makoto's Knight, though they are an informal example; Sonoko is a Genki Girl Ojou with very bad luck, whereas Makoto is a karate champion with downright Super-Strength, and he has protected his "Bright Lady" just like a "White Knight" would several times.
  • Long-Distance Relationship: With Makoto. This is mostly due to him being a world-ranked karate practitioner and is always travelling. The couple is also enrolled in different schools, not to mention from the school that rivals Sonoko's best friend in karate.
  • Official Couple: With Makoto Kyogoku.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Sonoko has made it no secret that she doesn't particularly think highly of Shinichi. Therefore, when she comes to his defense after Ran fails to properly respond to his Love Confession, you know it's serious for her.
  • Opposites Attract: Sonoko (an excitable, lovey-dovey, modern gal) is officially paired with Makoto (a mellow, Oblivious to Love, old-school kind of guy).
  • Plucky Girl: She never ever gives up on what she wants.
  • Rescue Romance: Her relationship with Makoto began when he saved her from being killed by the Villain Of The Week, and at other times, he would come to her rescue at the perfect moment.
  • Retcon: In the Episode One special, Sonoko clearly ships Shinichi and Ran together (she tells them they can date another time, calls Shinichi a noisy husband and puts a "Shinichi Love" inscription on the karate outfit which her parents and her give to Ran). And thus, her former anti-shipper mentality seems to have been retconned.
  • Running Gag: Her bad luck with men, until she started dating Makoto. In 153-154, she goes boy-hunting in Izu (with Ran and Conan in tow)... and the attractive boy who showers her with compliments turns out to be the AxCrazy killer of the week, driven by a hatred for blonde girls. She is rescued by Makoto, which marks the start of their relationship.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The Energetic Girl (an easily emotional Genki Girl) to Makoto's Savvy Guy (and kinda more oblivious than the average "savvy guy").
  • She Is All Grown Up: In the Stranger of 10 Years Ago OAV, she's not only Older and Wiser but is almost as much of a Type 1 Ojou as Ayako.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • After being an antagonist against Shinichi/Ran, she practically refers to the couple as Husband/Wife, and about sending pictures to Shinichi regarding Ran to either make him blush or jealous.
    • Sonoko later ships the HELL out of Officers Takagi and Satou. In fact, is PISSED when Conan interrupts what could have been Takagi and Sato's First Kiss...
    • Sonoko believes that Conan and Ayumi would be cute together.
  • Shipping Torpedo: For a long time she's a Shinichi/Ran anti-shipper since she believes he's not good enough for her and she can't stand seeing Ran suffering because of Shinichi - for all Sonoko knows he's enjoying himself while her best friend is having a bloody miserable time. She later mellows out on this.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Despite her flirty tendencies, Sonoko is only interested in Makoto. A polite, brave, and noble young man. Not to mention, they started their relationship after Makoto rescued her from a serial killer and in subsequent appearances.
Sonoko: "Makoto-san is... absolutely fantastic and nice and is a good person!"
  • Spoiled Sweet: Sonoko is the daughter of an extremely wealthy family, and while she certainly has her quirks, she is shown to be a loyal friend, a caring girlfriend and nice to the people around her despite their much less wealthy financial status.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: One may think she's Ran's girly girl and her older sister Ayako's tomboy but Ran thing is more complex than that. Sonoko is less physically active and more boy-crazy/fashionista than Ran, but is also more outspoken and straightforward than her (Unless Ran's in tsuntsun mode, yeah.) In fact, their friendship started when Sonoko protected Ran when they were children!
  • Uptown Girl: Sonoko (her parents are the heads of an extremely wealthy and large company) and Makoto (was introduced working at his family's inn).
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Downplayed. She doesn't do anything violent, but when Inspector Yamamura begins to obnoxiously think Makoto is a suspect in a murder case, Sonoko shouts at the Inspector that Makoto isn't the murderer and continues to give Yamamura death glares when he makes veiled comments about him believing Makoto to be the culprit.

Voiced by: Yuko Miyamura

Japanese Live-Action Actress:Rei Okamoto
English Voice Actresses: Gwendolyn Lau (EN, Funimation), Kayli Mills (EN, TMS/Bang Zoom)
Spanish Voice Actresses:Marcela Bordes (first Latin American Spanish dub), Gigliola Mariángel (third Latin American Spanish dub)

"Ya might have already heard this from Kudō-kun but...In London, apparently Kudo-kun confessed his feelings to Ran-chan. That's why, though I wouldn't have said this...The truth is...The truth is, I also...Since a long time ago...I... I LIKE YA VERY MUCH!"

Heiji's childhood friend and love-interest who becomes close friends with Ran.

  • Aborted Declaration of Love: Kazuha attempted to confess to Heiji in the aftermath of the Furinkazan murder mystery. She calls to him to speak privately but ultimately couldn't do it.
  • Action Girl: Aikido expert. Very helpful when par her with Ran's Karate.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Anytime she gets angry (usually at Heiji), most of the time, it's because she worries for their safety.
  • Badass Adorable: She knows Aikido and is quite cute, especially when talking about Heiji.
  • Badass in Distress: In the Kyoto movie, she was kidnapped and used as a bait for Heiji and Conan. Once she was released by Conan, though, they both helped Heiji in his fight.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Kazuha's initial attitude with Ran was rather frosty and standoffish because she was under the belief that Ran was romantically interested in Heiji. By their second meeting with each other, she's still frosty because Ran and Heiji, coincidentally wore the same type of outfit twice, making her jealous. However, the moment Kazuha explained this, Ran wordlessly took off the shirt and put on another one, surprising Kazuha at how nice Ran is. Afterwards, Kazuha softens up and truly befriends the other girl.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Heiji — they have a classic Slap-Slap-Kiss relationship and fell in love with one another at some point.
  • Betty and Veronica: The tomboyish, Hot-Blooded childhood friend "Betty" to Momiji's mysterious, girly, ojou "Veronica" for Heiji's "Archie". Subverted in that the promise Heiji made with Momiji wasn't of marriage and he's already in love with Kazuha.
  • Birds of a Feather:
    • With Heiji — both are stubborn, Hot-Blooded, have a strong love of Osaka, fathers are in the police force, attract a number of people from the opposite sex, and they have a strong belief in magic (though Heiji refuses to state it out aloud).
    • With Ran — Practitioners of a martial art (aikido for Kazuha, karate for Ran), afraid of the supernatural, love of children, are Dude Magnets but only have eyes for their childhood best friend. And even though they can be exasperated by their love interest's detective work and occasional jerkish side, both think that whenever their "not" boyfriends solving cases look cool when doing so and admire them for their better qualities as well. Also, both of their fathers are connected to some kind of detective/police work.
  • Brutal Honesty: She is highly confrontational, and unafraid of letting others know about her dislike.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: When she finally does get the nerve to do so (mentioning Shinichi's confession to Ran in London), Heiji rushes off to find and tease Conan before she can.
  • Chained Heat: With Heiji.
  • Chickification: Got hit hard with this. While Ran managed to avoid this because she was established as a sensitive and caring person from the start while still have some fight scenes, Kazuha was introduced as a spitfire aggressive person. Her sparing appearances has her being less aggressive overtime (even to criminals) and has almost no fight scenes. Just look at her reaction when she just suspected that Ran was interested in Heiji compare to her reaction when Momiji Ooka was blatantly flirting with him.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Heiji — they've known each other since they were kids and now have romantic feelings for each other.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Played for Laughs in her first appearance where she grilled Ran (who she thought was Shinichi) about how she should treat Heiji. Her next appearance has her being jealous over Ran because she and Heiji wore the same kind of outfit twice. Needless to say, Kazuha can get easily jealous.
  • Daddy's Girl: Kazuha has a close relationship with her dad.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Kazuha was rather frosty towards Ran because she thought that Ran may have took an interest in Heiji (they wore the same type of shirt twice). After Ran wordlessly changed shirts to put Kazuha at ease, the Osakan girl realized how nice Ran was and they instantly became friends.
  • Dude Magnet: Similar to Ran, Kazuha has many gentlemen ogling over her. And then there's Heiji...
  • Dub Name Change: Kirsten Thomas (Anime)/ Katrina Tolliver (Wii).
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Condescendingly nicknamed "Leafy" (Happa-chan) by Momiji.
  • Everybody Has Standards: She gave Heiji a major What the Hell, Hero? moment when he cheerfully (or enthusiastically) proclaimed someone's death.
  • Foil: To Ran — Kazuha lives with both parents (her mother has yet to make an appearance), is a little affectionate, but is capable of a lot, and is classified as a Type A Tsundere. Heiji is physically with her, but their feelings for each other have yet to be spoken. Kazuha is an Aikido expert and uses her hands more when fighting; Ran lives with her father (both her parents are separated), is generally more affectionate, and is classified as a Type B Tsundere. Shinichi is not with her currently, but he's really Conan Edogawa, and because of that her romantic feelings were noticed. She is a karate expert, and implores a lot of kicks when fighting.
  • Friend to All Children: In a side OVA, Kazuha showed a great talent with nursing children and told Heiji she would like to have one someday.
  • Good Luck Charm: She considers the picture of Heiji she carries around as this.
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Her ponytail hairstyle has been with her since childhood.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When she and Heiji are hanging precariously off the edge of a cliff, she attempts one and stabs him in the hand to make him let go of her. He doesn't.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Becomes this with Ran over time — They have become close friends since the second time they met and seem to regard each other as confidantes, since they are in similar romantic situations; and when Shinichi/Conan and Heiji are on cases together, Ran and Kazuha almost always spend the time together.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • She may not be on Heiji's level, but Kazuha was able to get his hint of a code in a murder investigation. Before that, she remembered a relatively small detail of how Ran and Heiji wore the same type of t-shirt twice, even though the time between her first and second appearance was a long one.
    • The 21st movie shows that Kazuha is proficient in hyakunin issha garuta, good enough to join school competitions. Just like her potential love rival, Momiji Ooka.
  • Hot-Blooded: Though she's more calmer in comparison with Heiji, she can still be passionate and emotional.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In her introductory chapter/episode, Kazuha mistakenly believes that the "Kudo" person Heiji has talked about is a girl, and that girl is Ran. She acts quite hostile to Ran for obvious reasons, but also warns Ran to not break Heiji's heart.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Her first and second appearance has her acting cold and snippy to Ran because of her jealousy-fueled fear that Ran liked Heiji. Then, there's how her Hot-Blooded nature makes her more temper-y. But she is brave, loyal, and friendly, the latter of which showed more after her defrosting.
  • Love Confession: Kazuha tried to do this and managed to carry it after the "The Design of Poison and Mirage" case, but Heiji left to go tease Conan about him making his own love confession to Ran as Shinichi.
"Ya might have already heard this from Kudo-kun, but... In London, apparently Kudo-kun confessed his feelings to Ran-chan. That's why, though I wouldn't have said this... The truth is... The truth is, I also... Since a long time ago... I... I LIKE YA VERY MUCH!"
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: Can effortlessly toss larger criminals with ease.
  • Protective Charm: They aren't real since the genre of the series doesn't include "magic", but Kazuha has a marked belief in spirits, good-luck charms, and other superstitions. Right from her first experience, she displayed her belief in the importance of hers and Heiji's omamori, charms which Kazuha made to protect her and Heiji from harm. A later case shows that Kazuha and her mother (but Kazuha even more so) are apparently well-known in Osaka thanks to the good-luck charms they make, said to be very effective good luck magnets for their owners.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Pale skin with raven hair.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Hot-Blooded, temperamental Red Oni to Ran's calmer, sensitive Blue Oni.
  • Sailor Fuku: Her and Heiji's school in Osaka also favors the seifuku (also a dark blue one) and the gakuran, and they show up wearing them at the start of the Desperate Revival arc.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Invoked on her in the seventh movie. In a subversion, this happened to her years ago, when she was a little girl visiting her family in Kyoto and they put her in a fancy kimono. Then little Heiji saw her under the Cherry Blossoms...
  • Shipper on Deck: She ships Shinichi and Ran.
  • Shorttank: Her usual outfit.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: In a reverse situation from Shinichi and Ran, it was Kazuha who realized her feelings for Heiji before he did and has never looked at another guy.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Kazuha is in love with her childhood best friend Heiji Hattori. To reiterate, Kazuha loves the Osakan detective who has a strong sense of justice and has proven to her time and again that he will do anything to protect her, including get into a brawl.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: Her whole dynamic with Heiji — They argue and call each other idiot, but they have a deep connection and love each other dearly.
  • Spanner in the Works: Whenever Heiji has a plan that involves him dressing up as someone else. She knows him that well.
  • Tomboy: More so than Ran. Kazuha's way of dressing ranges from shirt and jeans to (though rarely) dresses.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Her trademark hairstyle.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: While Kazuha is more tomboyish than Ran, she does love romance and has a thing for the theatre.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: By the end of her second appearance, Kazuha went from acting coldly to Ran to becoming one of her two Heterosexual Life-Partners.
  • Tsundere: Type A this time, meaning she's more temper-y than Ran.
  • Tuckerization: Her first name comes from one of Aoyama's assistants.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Like Ran, Kazuha has an intense fear over the supernatural.

    Masumi Sera

Masumi Sera

Age: 16-17

Debut: File 786-Jeet Kune Do (Manga), Episodes 646-647 Deduction Showdown at the Haunted Hotel (Anime)

Voiced by: Noriko Hidaka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/250723.jpg
"Case Closed!"

"Deletion. For data at least ... is an easy task to accomplish."

A rather peculiar New Transfer Student to Ran and Sonoko's class. Like Shin’ichi and Heiji, she is a high-school detective.

She moved from England to Japan to find out what happened to her brother, Shūichi Akai, after getting word of his supposed death.

Mandatory Naming Note: Her name comes from Mobile Suit Gundam's Sayla Mass. (セイラ・マス Seira Masu). The family connections are not coincidental.

  • Action Girl: Jeet Kune Do practitioner.
  • A-Cup Angst: Exclaims "They're due to pop out every day now!" when her small bust is commented upon, and then she insists that her mother has quite large breasts and therefore hers will become this too.
  • Amateur Sleuth: Another high-school age detective.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Maybe. She did tease Ran and Sonoko when they first met by saying that Ran's just her type, and also has had quite a bit of Les Yay with her. Meanwhile she also at one point jokes about having a secret boyfriend, and shows a rather strong fondness for Conan/Shinichi. In chapter 1002, when she meets Momiji, she's very fixated on Momiji's really large chest. But this is due to her A-Cup Angst.
  • Awesome by Analysis: Like the other high-school age detectives of the series, if slightly less prone to dramatics, Sera has a very good eye for details and is able to largely work out and give detailed explanations of tricks used in crime scenes.
  • Badass Armfold: Her Character Tic is doing this. Most commonly while leaning on a wall.
  • Badass Biker: Uses a motorcycle most of time, and once used it to smack a criminal about to kill Conan.
  • Bifauxnen: She's an Amateur Sleuth who at first is mistaken as a Troubled, but Cute guy until she shows up in Ran and Sonoko's class wearing the school's female uniform. In-story she's mostly seen as a tomboyish biker, and at least one of her friends (Sonoko) has found her pretty in a boyish way.
  • But Not Too Foreign: She claims to have studied abroad in America, but Conan eventually realizes little slips, such as calling soccer "football", that confirm she was actually in the United Kingdom. The flashback to when Shinichi and Ran first met Masumi confirms her mother was British and that she was indeed born and raised in the UK. Interestingly, both her parents have Japanese surnames (Sera and Akai), implying that despite her mother's extremely European features, there's Japanese heritage on both sides of the family.
  • Catchphrase: Sera's catchphrase upon the conclusion of a case is "case closed".
  • Cute Little Fangs: She has prominent canines that sometimes show when she smiles.
  • Expy: Masumi is based on Natsuki Koshimizu. a tomboy detective girl turned criminal who made her first appearance in the "Three Days with Heiji Hattori" case. Since Natsuki had proven highly popular, but Aoyama couldn't recycle her as a protagonist, the character of Masumi was created instead.
  • Fangirl: When she was young she liked to read the "Night Baron" series, so she is fan of Yusaku Kudō.
  • Family Eye Resemblance: Her green eyes turn out to be inherited from her mother Mary.
  • Fearless Fool: Downplayed. Sera isn't entirely fearless and is remarkably intelligent, but she often behaves in an incredibly reckless manner and seems to routinely underestimate exactly how dangerous the circumstances she's embroiling herself in actually are. This has so far come back to bite her in the form of Conan and his allies' repeated hesitance to confide in her despite knowing she's both Akai's sister and the daughter of a fellow APTX 4869 victim who needs their help. Sera has routinely and intentionally made obvious references to very dangerous information in insecure and public settings around uninformed people, and doesn't seem to understand why this has made others hesitant to reply in kind. She's reckless to the point of behaving entitled to what she clearly knows are others' life-threatening secrets despite not treating those secrets with the respect, care, or cautionary security required to maintain the safety of those involved.
  • Fedora of Asskicking: Almost always seen wearing a fedora and utilizes her motorcycle to capture criminals. Plus, she's a Jeet Kune Do expert.
  • Find the Cure!: Her mother was shrunk to middle-school age with APTX, so Sera's other main goal is find an antidote.
  • Foil: To Eisuke Hondou. Both are Mysterious Transfer Students with mixed backgrounds and a keen eye for detail and turn out to have some connection to an undercover agent in the Black Organization, both of them being the younger sibling to said agent (Eisuke to Hidemi Hondou aka Rena Mizunashi aka Kir, Sera to Shuichi Akai aka Rye. Eisuke is clumsy, resembles a woman, and has only met Ran and heard about Shinichi as a teenager; Masumi is athletic, often mistaken for a man, and it's heavily implied she met Shinichi and Ran as children. Both figured out Conan was Shinichi on their own, but while Eisuke kept this knowledge hidden and only told Shinichi about this after Shinichi willingly informed Eisuke himself, Masumi has made frequent and obvious references to knowing Conan's true identity in public settings, which has made him hesitant to confide in her.
    • She could also be argued to be one for Shinichi, as her foolhardy and almost carefree demeanor despite her circumstances is very reminiscent of his own personality at the beginning of the series, and his conflict with her over how recklessly she as a detective appears to handle dangers and security risks highlights how much more careful and paranoid Shinichi has become since the beginning of the series (at least, when romance isn't involved).
  • Forgotten First Meeting: It's been heavily alluded to that both Conan/Shinichi and Ran met her before when they were children, with both of them having vague feelings of recollection around her. Confirmed later: they met in the beach around 10 years before the story began.
  • Hint Dropping: Like many characters in the series, Sera has her secrets. Uniquely however, she seems to be actively trying to drop large hints about what they are so that Conan can figure them out, short of outright telling him.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Appearance wise, anyway. Unlike most of the other high-schoolers in the series (that aren't known to be privy to Conan secretly being Shinichi), Sera treats Conan like a friend more her own age instead of a child ten years younger. That being said, there are many hints she is aware that Conan isn't the child he looks to be.
    • All but outright confirmed that Sera knows Conan is actually her age. She still has the distinction of very openly treating Conan as an equal in any and all situations without tiptoeing around the issue. This is the friendliness that has had Sonoko teasingly label Sera a paedophile.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude:
    • Almost every character who meets her when she's in her casual clothing mistakes her for a boy at first. Her appearance even manages to confuse Kaitou Kid who after mistaking her for a teenage boy, knocked her out and stripped her of her clothes in order to impersonate her and still failed to notice until he was told.
    • This was actually a clue in the Red Woman murder case. One of the pieces of evidence that point to Sumika as the killer is that they didn't mistake Masumi for a boy.
  • Leg Focus: Whether she's in her uniform or in normal clothes, there's quite the focus on her long legs.
  • Messy Hair: Part of her Bifauxnen appearance.
  • Mugged for Disguise: It happens to her in The Blush Mermaid Heist. She's knocked out and stripped of her clothes by Kaitou Kid, who disguises himself as her and leaves her Bound and Gagged in the men's bathroom. It becomes a crucial plot point to solve the case, as Kaitou Kid mistakenly assumed she was a boy and thus made several mistakes when impersonating her.
  • New Transfer Student: The newest student of Teitan High after Eisuke left for America. Her various behaviors and comments made by and about her suggests she's got quite a few plot relevant secrets and connections under her belt.
  • Nice Girl: Sera has a cheery, sociable, boyish personality and is well liked by her classmates at Teitan High.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Has shown a tendency to throw chummy hugs around her friends, or excitedly get right up in Conan's face when she's enquiring him about something.
  • Plucky Girl: Masumi is a biker bifauxnen who does her best to help her friends and look for both her missing older brother and a cure for her mother, who is an APTX survivor like Conan and Ai.
  • Running Gag: About the above, people being unsure if she's a girl or a boy.
  • Samus Is a Girl: On Ran, Conan and Sonoko, as well as the audience who don't find out concretely that she's female until after the first case she's involved in.
  • Secret-Keeper: Is mysteriously hiding an unusually mature-behaving young girl, whom Sera resembles, in the hotel room where she is living. Said child has specifically asked Sera to keep her presence hidden from others. It's later revealed that the child is her mother, Mary Sera, who like Shinichi/Conan and Shiho/Ai was shrunk to a child-age. Both of them are looking for clues to find a cure for her.
  • Shipper on Deck: She teases Ran about her and Shinichi's relationship, and even calls her Shinichi's girlfriend.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Implied. It's mentioned that Shuichi Akai went to America and decided to join FBI after their father's death. Then in Chapter 972, Akai mentioned that their mother, Mary, was still pregnant when Akai left Japan for America. This means Masumi wasn't born yet by the time their father died.
  • Spirited Competitor: In some degree, she seems to like rivalry or contests to see who is the winner.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: As of Chapter 822, she's been revealed to be Shuuichi Akai's younger sister. Lampshaded and foreshadowed by the fact that Conan mentions that she looks like someone he knows when they first met.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: According to Word of God, the entire reason Sera was created was to have a character similar to the aforementioned Natsuki, who had proven popular with fans, but could no longer be used since she was arrested for killing someone.
  • Tempting Fate: In Chapter 969/Episode 878, Conan tells her, Sonoko, and Ran about a troublesome customer at a clothing store he happened upon. Masumi remarks that the woman is the most likely to be a victim of a murder. Not ten minutes later, she and the others find the woman murdered.
  • Tomboy: When she said she was going to dress more girlishly for an Iron Chef-style show's taping she meant she'd be wearing girly panties.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: Masumi is quite quick-minded, coming up with clever plans and adapting them to sudden changes rapidly.

Yusaku Kudō

Age: 37-38

Debut: File 51-The Truth Under the Mask (Manga), Episode 43- Conan Edogawa Kidnapping Case (Anime)

Voiced by: Hideyuki Tanaka

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/infobox___yusaku_kudo.jpg

English Voice Actors: Randy Tallman, John Swasey (Funimation) / Keith Silverstein (TMS/Bang Zoom)
Spanish Voice Actors:Juan Zadala and Roberto Alexander (first Latin American Spanish dub), Jorge Lillo (third Latin American Spanish dub), Luis Grau (second European Spanish dub, first part)

"You are going to regret it, if you underestimate girls."

Famous mystery writer and Shinichi's father. He lives with his wife Yukiko in Los Angeles, but he and Yukiko drop by regularly to check on Shinichi. As of chapter 1007 (anime episode 942), he and his wife have returned to Japan to monitor the situation and live with Subaru Okiya in Shinichi's house.

Mandatory naming note: Yusaku's name comes from Shunsaku Kudo (protagonist of the TV Drama Tantei Monogatari aka Detective Tales) and actor Yusaku Matsuda (who portrayed Shunsaku Kudo).

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Yu-chan" by his wife, Yukiko.
  • Always Someone Better: Among the few who can outsmart Shinichi/Conan on a regular basis.
  • Amateur Sleuth: In his youth, Yusaku would solve cases.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Yusaku possesses a very sharp intellect and observation skills, traits which his son inherited, though Yusaku's own abilities remain more well-honed. He demonstrates in multiple cases an ability to operate one step ahead of both Shinichi and criminals, but he chooses to not get involved unless Conan appears unable solve the case alone in time to save the intended victim.
  • Badass Bookworm: Knows as much trivial info as his son, or even more.
  • Badass Pacifist: In the "North Star #3 Express Leaving Ueno" mystery, Yusaku was able to get the culprit to surrender to the police without having to resort to any violence.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He is supposed to be an even better detective than his son and has even outsmarted him a couple of times, he'd just rather work as a writer instead. His relationship with Shinichi is a very clear Shout-Out to Sherlock Holmes and his older brother Mycroft.
  • Dub Name Change: Booker Kudo.
  • Famed In-Story: Yusaku is famous for his mystery novel series, Night Baron.
  • Fanboy: His love of Sherlock Holmes is briefly explored in the non-canon 6th movie, The Phantom of Baker Street, wherein Yusaku and Agasa helped develop one of the Cocoon VR modules as 19th Century London and included Holmes, Watson, and Irene Adler as non-playable characters modeled visually after Yusaku, Agasa, and Yukiko, respectively.
  • Great Detective: Yusaku has helped solve some of Megure's cases in the past and has been known to be faster at deduction than his son.
  • Guile Hero: He's good at catching criminals because writing complicated and engaging novels from a villain's POV gives him insight on details and human psyche.
  • Happily Married: He and Yukiko are in a more stable marriage that Kogoro and Eri.
  • Insufferable Genius: Yusaku knows he's a very smart man and constantly reminds everyone, or at least Shinichi.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Can be pretty insensitive and an Insufferable Genius sometimes, but still a decent man overall. Oh well, Like Father, Like Son.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • His first name translates to, "make abundance"; Yusaku is a world famous novelist who owns a Big Fancy House.
    • Yusaku's Dub Name Change to Booker, given his love of reading and that his job is a mystery novelist.
  • Mellow Fellow: He is very laid back and calm, never seen to lose his temper.
  • Mystery Writer Detective: He writes the popular Night Baron stories.
  • One Degree of Separation: Not to the same prominent extent as his wife, nor the extreme extent as his son, but still present. Though his son encounters the new Kaitou KID by complete coincidence within the plot, Kaito's father was one of Yuusaku's best friends and Yuusaku's wife's mentor.
  • Open-Minded Parent: He has a very laissez-faire style when it comes to parenting Shinichi, even more so than Yukiko. For example, he often took his son to crime scenes before Shinichi was eleven, and showed no concern over six-year-old Shinichi dragging Ran and Agasa into a potentially dangerous area of town to investigate a code. This is briefly deconstructed in the latter incident, since his son and another child (a young Ran in this case) could've been harmed and the latter's parent (Eri) was justifiably angry at Shinichi's parents for being so lax.
  • Parental Neglect: When Shinichi was a young teen, he and his wife left Japan to jetset around the globe, leaving their son behind to take care of himself. They've continued this into the present, although the situation with Black Org seems to have begun to encourage more direct involvement in their son's life.
  • The Profiler: Implied. The reason his Night Baron novels are so popular is because of his ability to get inside the mind of a criminal.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The Savvy Guy (a cool-minded, Insufferable Genius who nevertheless loves Yukiko dearly) to Yukiko's Energetic Girl (a grown-up Genki Girl who loves Yusaku back but sometimes is quite tsundere towards him).
  • Secret-Keeper: He, along with Yukiko, know about Conan's true identity.
  • Shipper on Deck: He teases Shinichi about his obvious love for Ran.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Even with his mild flirting to other women, Yuusaku has only had eyes for Yukiko. There's also how he modeled "Irene Adler" after Yukiko in the third movie; in the mystery game Yusuaku was Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler was Holmes's one and true love.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: With Yukiko, at their worst. She'll run away from him due to his insensitivity, he'll brusquely tell her to come back, and she'll oblige in a Tsundere-like manner.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: He sports glasses and is sharper than his son.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Here is Yusaku in his 20's, sans-moustache and glasses. The similarities between Dad and Shinichi went off the freaking ceiling with that.
  • Teen Genius: Yeah, Like Father, Like Son in this too as Yusaku would start solving cases when he was roughly Shinichi's age.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: While in a restaurant with his future wife, Yukiko, a murder occurred. Yusaku solved the case brilliantly in front of her and then when it was resolved, he asked for her to be his wife, which she accepted. His son, Shinichi, would attempt this with his love, Ran, but fail on his part.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: He and Yukiko are both more laid back than their more serious son. It's downplayed in that while they their lifestyle may annoy him, they both know when to get serious.

"Hey, you may be looking at my future daughter-in-law."

English Voice Actresses Laurie Steele, Melinda Wood Allen note  (,Funimation) / Erika Harlacher (TMS/Bang Zoom)
Spanish Voice Actresses:Anna Grinta (first Latin American Spanish dub), Laura Orlazábal (third Latin American Spanish dub), Esperanza Dómenech (second European Spanish dub, first part)

"There's only two reasons for a girl to look at a boy like that: he has something on his face or she likes him."

Shinichi's mother, an old friend and rival of Ran's mother Eri, as well as a former teen model and actress; past jobs that have even brought upon her a connection to the Black Organization's member, Vermouth.

She currently lives with Yusaku in Los Angeles, but they drop by regularly to check on Shinichi. As of chapter 1007 (anime episode 942), she and her husband have returned to Japan to monitor the situation and live with Subaru Okiya in Shinichi's house.

Mandatory naming note: The name Yukiko Fujimine (藤峰) name is a Shout-Out to Lupin III's Fujiko Mine and Fujiko's first seiyuu, Yukiko Nikaido. An alias she used twice, Fumiyo (文代), comes from Fumiyo Akechi, wife of Edogawa Rampo's Kogoro Akechi.

  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: She's quite..... unique and hyperactive, to say the least.
  • Attention Whore: Like her son, she loves to be in the spotlight.
  • Badass Driver: The New York case has Yukiko show off her impressive, if illegal, driving skills.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Do not allude to her age! Or even call her "auntie"!
    • If you're Yusaku, do not flirt with women in front of her!
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Yukiko may be a bit of a ditz, but she's no slouch when it comes to action.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: A married variant. One of her berserk buttons is her husband flirting with other women. At one point, it upset her so much she flew back to Japan to teach him a lesson!
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: As air-headed and ditzy as she is, she's also an accomplished actor, who can fool just about anyone.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Either in a car or her motorcycle, Yukiko pulls some dangerous, illegal stunts.
  • Dude Magnet: Was and still is flirted by many men.
  • Dub Name Change: Vivian Kudo.
  • Famed In-Story: She is a retired actress.
  • Friendly Rivalry: She and Eri, despite not being in similar fields, were classmates and often engage in friendly competition.
  • Friendly Scheming: Being at the same time a loving mother, a very mischievous person, and a Master of Disguise, Yukiko is really fond of playing those on Shinichi (the most prominent example being "Conan Edogawa Kidnapping Case"; though this time it was Yusaku's idea, so that Conan could realize the dangers of detective work and reunite with his parents in America).
  • The Gadfly: She loves to tease.
  • Happily Married: She and Yusaku are in a more stable marriage that Kogoro and Eri.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Eri Mouri/Kisaki — They have been best friends since their high school years, have a healthy Friendly Rivalry with one another, and are willing to help each other out when one is in trouble.
  • Idol Singer: Before marrying Yusaku, she was a famous teen actress and beauty queen.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While not on the same jerk-level as her husband and son, she does have a certain amount of immaturity and attention seeking nature. However, when the stakes are high she's able to show her bravery and loyalty.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Usually acts quite childish, unless she needs to be serious.
  • Master of Disguise: She has NOT lost her acting skills after retirement.
    • She studied and learned the art of disguise with Vermouth from the same Teacher.
    • Even more so, she helped Shuuichi Akai to become this and then build his Subaru Okiya identity.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: She married Yusaku when they were twenty and Shinichi was born the next year. She still looks the same even after Shinichi turned sixteen.
  • Ojou Ringlets: She has the three prominent ones.
  • One of the Kids: Yukiko's childish nature makes her get along well with children.
  • One Degree of Separation: Yukiko is very prone to this. Though her son encounters the new Kaitou KID by complete coincidence within the plot, Kaito's father was Yukiko's mentor. Also, though Shinichi encountering the Black Org was equally a complete coincidence, Yukiko's fellow student during that same mentorship was the Black Org assassin who targets Haibara during her introduction arc.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She tends to refer to her friends and family with a "-chan" suffix. So, in her (and Yusaku's) introductory chapter/episode, she at first uses her son's Affectionate Nickname ("Shin-chan") when she and husband were trying to convince him to come overseas with them to be safer from the Black Organization. When Shinichi refuses to do so, telling them both to stay away since it's his case, Yukiko calls him by his full first name, no suffix, and while using a completely serious voice.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Not as much as Yusaku, but Yukiko is fairly open-minded about letting her shrunken son reside in his best friend/love interest's home to investigate the men who tried to murder him.
  • Parental Neglect: When Shinichi was a young teen, she and her husband left Japan to jetset around the globe, leaving their son behind to take care of himself. They've continued this into the present, although the situation with Black Org seems to have begun to encourage more direct involvement in their son's life.
  • Pride: She takes pride in being an excellent actress and a mistress of disguise, able to fool even close friends and family with her skills.
  • Red Baron: Became known as the "Night Baroness" because of her husband's work.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The Energetic Girl (a grown-up Genki Girl who loves Yusaku back but sometimes is quite tsundere towards him) to Yusaku's Savvy Guy (a cool-minded, Insufferable Genius who nevertheless loves Yukiko dearly).
  • Secret-Keeper: One of few people who knows Conan is Shinichi.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Shinichi and Ran. She even refers Ran as her future daughter-in-law! Needless to say, this caused Ran to blush. Interestingly enough, she also ships Shinichi and Ai, but that just may be her teasing her son.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: With Yusaku, at their worst. She'll run away from him due to his insensitivity, he'll brusquely tell her to come back, and she'll oblige in a Tsundere-like manner.
  • Teasing Parent: She is childlike and mischievous, and also a professional actress. She frequently plays jokes on him and appears alongside him in various disguises, so that he wouldn't recognize her. Sometimes his father Yusaku also joins in: for example, in "Conan Edogawa Kidnapping Case" they both dressed up as agents of the Black Organization and staged a fake kidnapping of Conan, to make him realize the dangers of detective work in Japan and reunite with them in America.
  • The Trickster: Very much so; see Friendly Scheming.
  • Tsundere: Specially seen in a certain two-parter where it turns out she came to Japan alone after a fight with Yusaku. Once they get involved in a case which Yusaku resolves, cue to her hilariously refusing to come back to the USA with him.
  • Undying Loyalty: Yukiko is extremely loyal and cares for both her husband and her son (though a heavy streak of mischief causes her to often tease Shinichi). Her loyalty extends to her friends, as she thinks nothing of flying across the Pacific to help a friend from elementary school.
  • Verbal Tic: Yukiko usually adds the "-chan" suffix in regards to her family and friends.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: At one point, stuffed her son between her breasts to take him along for a bike ride.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: She and Yusaku are both more laid back than their more serious son. It's downplayed in that while they their lifestyle may annoy him, they both know when to get serious.
  • Womanchild: Often acts very, very childishly despite being in her late thirties.

    Eri Kisaki

Japanese Live-Action Actress:Nene Otsuka
English Voice Actresses: Julie Mayfield (Funimation) / Mari Devon note  (TMS/Bang Zoom)
Spanish Voice Actresses:Rocío Gallegos (first Latin American Spanish dub), Mónica Manjarrez (second Latin American Spanish dub, movie 2 only), María Luisa Benech (third Latin-American Spanish dub), Marta Sáinz (second European Spanish dub)

Ran's mother and the estranged wife of Kogoro. She's a very successful attorney.

Mandatory Naming Note: The name comes from Ellery Queen; Kisaki means "Queen."

  • Action Mom: Doesn't fight actively, but can defend herself with judo when needed. Implied to have learned it from Kogoro.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: At one point in the anime, Eri was given dark brown (nearly black) hair, before it was officially switched to light brown.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Frequently with Kogoro. Pretty much whenever they meet, they spend the entire time nagging each other, but these chapters/episodes usually end with a clear indicator that they still care for each other.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Eri is highly intelligent and has a sharp eye for details. She has proven on more than one occasion that she can lend a big helping hand in cases, and her deductions are almost always accurate.
  • Badass Bookworm: Eri is one of the most skilled lawyers in the series and her deductions are very helpful in cases.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Kogoro. They are a married couple and argue to hide the fact that they want to live with one another again.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: Wears big glasses and is Dude Magnet, and whenever she does her Crush Blush when around or thinking of Kogoro, she is downright adorable. Though harsher than the standard.
  • Brainy Brunette: She has light brown hair and one of smartest adult in the series. She is shown to be a rather competent detective as well - which is why she makes a great lawyer!
  • Can't Live with Them, Can't Live Without Them: With Kogoro. At one point, Kogoro even outright states that he cannot bear being separated from Eri and asks her to come back, but she pretends she didn't hear him because she's not ready yet. She ALMOST came back for Kogoro in The Day That Mouri Kogoro Ceased Being Detective. Thanks to Sayuri Tokomae however...
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Kogoro. They have known each other since elementary school and are now married, if estranged.
  • Damsel out of Distress: She put up quite a fight before and after she was kidnapped, to the point of alerting her family to locate her. The only reason that she was unable to escape is because the kidnappers outnumbered her and had a taser.
  • Dub Name Change: Eva Kadan.
  • Dude Magnet: Guess where Ran gets her looks from? Eri is considered incredibly attractive. Various men of different ages have pined for her, but she always turns them down, mostly due to her feelings for Kogoro.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Ten years prior to the story, Eri had a Tomboyish Ponytail. Now, she wears a Prim and Proper Bun hairstyle.
  • Friendly Rivalry: She and Yukiko, despite not being in similar fields, were classmates and often engage in friendly competition.
  • Genius Sweet Tooth: A lover of Swiss chocolate and her analytical skills are on par with Shinichi's.
  • Girlish Pigtails: During her elementary school years, Eri wore pigtails in her hair.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Her outfit is almost always a purple lawyer suit and is quite mature (at least, when it doesn't involve her husband).
  • Hello, Attorney!: A literal example. She's gorgeous and is a defense attorney.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Yukiko Kudo — They have been best friends since their high school years, have a healthy Friendly Rivalry with one another, and are willing to help each other when one is in trouble.
  • High-School Sweethearts: With Kogoro — They have a Childhood Friend Romance which included going to the same high school together before marrying at the age of 20.
  • Lethal Chef: The real (and pathetic) reason why she separated with Kogoro; the guy is just too honest to tell her that her cooking sucks without giving a damn for what she feels. He actually wanted to force her to go to bed after a Shoot the Hostage situation that had her as the hostage and Kogoro as the one shooting, but she tried to cook for him despite having been wounded, and well...
  • Nice Girl: Despite her friction with Kogoro, Eri does love him. Besides that, she's a consistently polite person.
  • Omnidisciplinary Lawyer: The series never clarify what is her specialization were. "Kisaki SOS" arc seems to indicate that her law firm is "Door Lawyers" type. She has shown to take cases from divorce to domestic abuse and murder.
  • Parents as People:
    • Eri deeply loves Ran, but her stubbornness in returning home because of her friction with Kogoro doesn't help out her daughter. Her hurt and anger at Kogoro also make her badmouthing Kogoro in front of Ran.
    • It's also implied that Eri is too focused on her career to be the primary caretaker for Ran given that Ran is living with Kogoro.
  • Prim and Proper Bun: Her usual hairstyle except in some flashbacks when she was younger. Otherwise, she has a serious and poise air around her that matches her bun.
  • Professional Maiden Name: After separating from Kogoro, Eri began using her maiden name while doing work as a lawyer. Although since Eri and Kogoro never divorced, this means Eri is still legally known as Eri Mouri.
  • Red Baron: Known as "The Queen of the Courtroom", owing to her track record as a defense lawyer. Recall 99% of all prosecutions in Japan are convicted, which means the best defense lawyers in real-life Japan would win once every several years.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Downplayed. Eri doesn't actively try to wane Ran's love for Shinichi, but she has often advised her to give up on him.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Whatever she may say, Eri has only ever romantically loved Kogoro Mouri.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: See her Teen Genius section and the fact that she has never lost a case in her entire career.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: All of Ran's physical good looks came from Eri.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's a cold tsundere to Kogoro, but can show him her warmer side.
  • Teen Genius: She was one of the national top scorers when she was in high school, and actually turned down an offer to go to Harvard because of Kogoro.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Eri likes Zigoba, a brand of Swiss chocolates.
  • Tsundere: She vehemently claims to hate the drunkard, gambling and womanizing Kogoro but she still wears her wedding ring and keeps on listening to his recorded voice on the Walkman asking her to come home and start over. She even named her pet cat "Goro" after him. In fact, she is always ready to come back to him once he quits his vices and starts to act like a responsible husband... but this IS Kogoro we're talking about.
