Main Characters

    Carter “Crush” Howe

Carter Howe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/godhisoutfitissobad.jpg
"Has serotonin levels that appreciate a good thrill ride."
Renhain Academy first year and central character of the series. Originally from the peak level Ovensee Penguins novice team, he takes a year-long break from hockey and returns as a center for the Renhain Deers, an “unsensational AA country team” six hours away from his hometown.

  • '80s Hair: Proudly sports a green mullet.
  • The Ace: Defied. Although Reuben warns Carter not to make the team "rely on the empty promise of a 'prodigy,'" Carter assures him that he never even claimed to be one.

  • Berserk Button: Has a few, namely with being recorded and others insinuating that he earned his place on the Renhain Deers through anything other than talent.
  • Big Entrance: Has a habit of making these.
    • In chapter one, he arrives late to the class orientation and yells, “Fuck!!! I’m sorry! What would be a valid reason for me to be late? Let’s pretend it was that!”
    • In chapter two, he comes into class late, covered in trash and bruised, and makes up a story about being attacked by not one, but three raccoons with rabies. Unfortunately for him, word about his dramatics had already reached his teacher, and he still gets reprimanded.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Missing one, but 3 out of 4 isn't bad.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Stated in the prologue and comic description, further implied through Carter's behaviors and flashbacks within the story.
  • Dumb Jock: Outright states that he's dumb in chapter 1, and even misspells his own nickname on his water bottle.
  • Empty Eyes: When sent into a flashback in chapter 3.
  • Fun T-Shirt: Sports a bacon-themed "Crunch Time" shirt in chapter 3.
  • Held Back in School: Implied, as he’s older than he should be for his grade. In the time-out update between chapters two and three, the author confirms that this is intentional.
  • Hellish Pupils: When angered or triggered, his pupils tend to turn into cat-like slits. This transition is shown most clearly when he realized that Lee was recording him during his fight with Matt.
  • In-Series Nickname: Prefers being called Crush, but Shimmer and Buddha have dubbed him Showtime for his flashy and expensive skates as part of their nicknaming duty.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Several times.
    • Upon seeing Scott stand up at full height, yells “Fuck me, you’re huge!” Scott, however, is immediately revealed to readers as very self-conscious about his height.
    • Remarks on Popeye's excessive sweating. Despite it not being a sore spot for him, Popeye still says it's not nice to point out.
  • Really Gets Around: Spent all of summer vacation, in his own words, "whoring around."

    Reuben Massaad

Reuben Massaad

"Apparently arrogant."
Second-year team captain of the Renhain Deers and one of three POV characters
  • The Captain: Team captain of the Renhain Deers junior hockey team.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Downplayed. Franky has no problem making his attraction to Reuben known, and even expects others to do the same.
Franky: Well that was awkward... but have you seen this young god?! Absolute flawless, someone should get him a modeling contract ASAP! I hope he never plays without a full face shield and doesn't risk his perfect set of teeth!
Carter: Who are you talking about?
Franky: Crush, don't play stupid with me!
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Has blue eyes and oftentimes comes off as cold or blunt.
  • No Social Skills: Discussed.
Walker: Between us... Reuben does not have much social intelligence? A lot of things fly over his head. No idea how he got elected as the captain with such sad communication skills.

    Scott Williams

"Very self-conscious about his height."
First-year goalie for the Renhain Deers. He aims to get through school staying unknown, but his attention-grabbing height and newfound friendships have other plans for him.
  • Height Angst: As his intro shows, he's sensitive about being 201cm (6'7") tall.
  • Homeschooled Kids: Renhain Academy is his first co-ed school.
  • Shower Shy: He refuses to shower with his hockey teammates, instead putting on a sweater and going to the private bathroom in his dorm to shower. This is because he wants to hide the Self-Harm scars on his arm and stretch marks from rapid growth.
  • Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: Green eyes, check. Flaming red hair, check. Main character, check.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Despite going to a Catholic school, Scott is singled out by Matt and Lee for praying before the match against the second and third years. He notes that most people at Renhain Academy seem less religious than the school advertises.

"Sacrifices her last vacation day to deliver this well-rehearsed speech."
Team manager of the Renhain Deers.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: Makes a few assumptions about Carter. Much to his chagrin, she's completely correct.
Amanda: It would be a shame if you got suspended from a game or missed training because you're stuck in detention or having to do extra credit for your poor grades.
Carter: Huh?! That's oddly specific... Do I look like a guy who usually gets punished or fails tests?
Amanda: Noooo, of course not!! I'm just...
    Carter: Hypothetically speaking?
    Amanda: Yeah, exactly, hohoho!

  • Can't Take Criticism: Demonstrated when Carter tells him he's on the wrong side for a faceoff.
Coach: Are you serious? Do I look like a zebra to you? Do I need to clone myself a couple times, so we have four of me?! Do you want a perfect set up for a frickin' practice match?! Are the deers not good enough for a former penguin? Funnily, no one here gives a damn about such minor details!
Carter: I will remember to not point out your future mistakes again!

All of the first years (Except Popeye) immediately figure out that the others plan to bail and leave them with the tab as a hazing ritual.
  • Leader Wannabe: During the first practice of the year, he puts himself in charge of setting up the teams, despite the job presumably being for Reuben, the team captain.
  • Suddenly Shouting: In chapter 6, after the first years figure out his plan to haze them, he shouts "THEY KNOW" at the top of his lungs. He then tries to accuse them of being too suspicious.
Lee: Boy... The way you just screamed They Know out loud!
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: In chapter three.
Reuben: I'm just wondering, why are you—
Walker: I am definitely not trying to sneakily undermine your captain role!!

  • My Beloved Smother: She goes to great lengths to make sure that her darling son Scott connects with the ‘right people’, whether that be asking what preventions the school has to stop her son from joining in a “wild sex orgy” in front of all his new classmates or forcibly pulling him away from Carter.
