    Sumire Kakei (Shigaraki)

Voiced by: Aya Endo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sumire_boruto.png

A genin of Boruto's graduating Academy batch. A former classmate and school friend of Boruto. She was the class representative of Boruto's class during their Academy years. She was seen mostly with Sarada & Chouchou during her Academy years, though she sometimes also hanged out with Wasabi and Namida with whom she is now teammates. Initially a genin in Team Hanabi, she is currently a research assistant in Konohagakure's Scientific Ninja Weapons Team.

  • Animated Tattoo: The eye at the center of the Gozu Tennou opens wider the more chakra it's fed. When it disappears from her back, the new mark on her left palm (which looks just like that same eye) can blink freely.
  • Becoming the Mask: For all her insistence that Sumire Kakei never existed, it's the experiences she made with that indentity (along with a speech from Boruto) that sever her connection to the Nue and allow them both to abandon their revenge-driven purposes. In the end, she completely embraces said mask and becomes all the more happier for it.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She puts up a great act of Class Representative to hide her real goals. Averted in that she tried to become this, but as Boruto talks her out of it, she realizes deep down she really is a nice girl who was manipulated by her father. With some introspection, she returns to the persona she believed she made up which was what she was deep down all along.
  • Big Bad: Of the Academy Arc in the anime.
  • Breakout Character: Sumire became one of the most popular Boruto characters after the Nue arc, popular enough to be brought back in subsequent anime episodes, with one focusing entirely on her - and to be confirmed as a canon character.
  • Class Representative: She mentions in her introduction to be the class rep of Boruto's class.
  • Color Motif: Violet. It's in her name, hair, clothes, and her eyes, and later it also turns out to be the color of her and Nue's chakra as seen by Boruto's dojutsu.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Played straight in the anime where her eyes are purple just like her hair. Averted in the manga where she has blueish violet hair and dark grey eyes.
  • Easily Forgiven: The fact that she is just a really nice child with a horrible past plays a decisive factor into this because otherwise she did nearly kill several people by severely draining them of their chakra and had launched Nue as a part of a plan to blow up the entire Leaf village from within.
  • Finger Firearms: Her primary method of attack is to fire water bullets from her fingertips this way.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Has two, long braided pigtails.
  • Generation Xerox: Ends up being a scientist like her dad, as Chapter 18 of the Boruto manga revealed. She works with Katasuke. However, due to fan demand, episode 55 of the anime showed that she partook the chunin exams and didn't become a scientist.
  • I Am Not My Father: When is becomes apparent that Nue has grown fond of Sumire after all this time and thinks of her as its parent, Boruto asks her if she's really going to do as her father did and turn Nue into a weapon of revenge. Sumire realizing that she can't is what breaks the Gozu Tennou.
  • Laser-Guided Tyke-Bomb: Raised by her father for the sole purpose of exacting his revenge on Konoha by blowing it up with a giant monster for which she would serve as the summoner. Her dedication to that purpose is so great that she's willing to die to empower Nue further... until Boruto talks her out of it.
  • Love Triangle: Is interested in Boruto. Sarada has a crush on him and Sumire in turn declares her own interest in Boruto to Sarada in chapter 19.
  • Making a Splash: Her specialty is water style ninjutsu which she can use to fire from a Finger Gun, create walls and clones from.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name means "violet" (the flower) in Japanese.
  • Nervous Wreck: One of her defining traits; she has a tendency to worry and freak out over various problems.
  • Nice Girl: While not very outspoken, she shows genuine concern for her classmates. Sumire is also very respectful and dutiful, and wishes to avoid conflict if necessary. While some of it is an act, she actually does enjoy spending time with her classmates and isn't nearly as cold-hearted as she thinks she should or tried to be in order to fulfill her father's vendetta.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Or in this case Obfuscating Meekness, she always acted flustered around any physical conflict; turns out that she's much more capable of combat.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Her two braids reach past her waist.
  • Revenge by Proxy: She took on herself to get revenge on Konoha since her father couldn't do it while he was alive.
  • Sailor Fuku: She dons a black t-shirt, with a violet dress over it that has a white collar on it, knotted by a purple ribbon, almost resembling a seifuku overall with long black stockings.
  • Starter Villain: The first of Boruto's opponents in the anime despite not being a villain herself.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: Sumire's main method of hooking victims up with her Gozu Tennou seems to be by biting them with a snake made of her chakra. This snake is also an effective weapon — Boruto needs a kunai to stop its bite, and it comes head-to-head with one of Mitsuki's white snakes.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Her outfit for the crux of her mission to destroy Konoha has the back entirely exposed since that's where her Mark of the Beast is, so it's less for fanservice and more for function.
  • Ship Tease: With Boruto. She openly admits she is interested in Boruto to Sarada.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ironically, despite her own feelings for Boruto, she cheerfully acknowledges that Sarada and Boruto get along really well in episode 49 and even encourages Sarada to go after an agitated Boruto in Episode 34. She openly asks Sarada whether she is interested in Boruto in chapter 19 and teasingly winks at her when she declares her own interest in him.
  • Shrinking Violet: Sumire is a meek and quiet girl. It's an act to deflect suspicion so she can harvest chakra in secret, though the shyness turns out to be real.
  • That Man Is Dead: Or as she said, Sumire Kakei never existed. It's just a facade so the others would not suspect her. However, rather ingeniously, it is her "original bad girl" persona that was fabricated and, with some help from Boruto, abandoned for good becoming "Sumire Kakei" from that point on.
  • The Power of Friendship: What eventually redeems her and allow her to come back to the Academy with her classmates.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has purple hair in anime and blueish-violet hair in the manga.
