The Heroes

Team RNJR (Ranger)

    Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose

Originally a student from Signal Academy who finds herself admitted into Beacon Academy two years ahead of schedule thanks to stopping an attempted robbery by Roman Torchwick. She was trained in scythe combat by her uncle, Qrow Branwen, and wields a high-caliber sniper scythe named Crescent Rose in battle. Cheerful, idealistic, and socially awkward, she's the leader of Team RNJR.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: She's hit much harder by the V3 finale than she did canonically, as she gets violently beaten by Terumi alongside having her right eye torn out. The events leave her bedridden and forced to remain on Patch in recovery, which leaves her frustrated at how she's unable to do anything to help anyone. It's also shown in Chapter 79 that she still suffers from the lingering trauma of Terumi's beating, even hallucinating his butterfly knives and almost having a panic attack because of it.
  • Adaptational Badass: Downplayed. In her home series, her first full activation of the Silver Eyes rendered her unconscious for a few days. In this story, her first use of them puts her in a brief daze for a few minutes, but otherwise still at full strength and able to fight Yuuki Terumi immediately after the fact.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the series, nothing is really known regarding Ruby's romantic interests. Here, she has explicit romantic feelings for Penny.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's an All-Loving Hero who looks for the best in others, is able to make friends with even grouches like Ragna, and is a Nice Gal to a fault. Her slashing away at Terumi with full intent to kill him and blasting off half his face during their fight shows why making her mad is a very bad idea.
  • Composite Character: After the events of the Volume 3, she ends up staying at home to recover from the trauma and loss of an appendage (in this case, her right eye), drawing elements of Yang from the canonical aftermath of the Fall of Beacon.
  • Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones:
    • A downplayed case of this regarding Rachel Alucard. Ruby doesn't outright hate her, but she's shown to find her very annoying because of her condescending attitude.
    • After he reveals himself to her, Ruby has nothing but pure hatred for Terumi due to him manipulating things to make Ragna turn into the Black Beast, resulting in the destruction of Vale, alongside him claiming that he killed her mother.
  • Eye Scream: In Chapter 70, she gets her right eye ripped out of its socket by Terumi.
  • The Glomp: She tended to do this with Ragna during the events of V1, running up to him and enveloping him in a crushing hug. While he doesn't like it, he's become marginally more okay with it overtime.
  • I'll Kill You!: She swears this of Terumi when he offhandedly reveals he killed Summer Rose.
  • It's All My Fault: She blames herself for when Noel ran away and suffered her identity crisis. She feels that, due to maintaining Noel and Penny's secret, she allowed things to spiral out of control.
  • The Leader: Like canon, she's a team leader, but she leads Team RNJR rather than Team RWBY.
  • Man of Kryptonite: She's this to Ragna, as her Silver Eyes beginning to activate caused him immense pain before he reverted back to his normal self. In Chapter 69, her Silver Eyes activate again, and this time completely incapacitate him.
  • Morality Pet: She's one of Ragna's most prominent, as she can get him to tone down his attitude and was even able to pull him back from when he went on a feral rampage at the docks.
  • Rage Breaking Point: After Terumi admits to killing Summer Rose, she completely loses it and lashes out at him in pure rage.
  • Secret-Keeper: She's this for Noel and Penny, as she's the only other person who knows their nature as Murakumo Units and has promised them she'd help keep it hidden.
  • Sinister Scythe: Her main weapon is Crescent Rose, a high-velocity sniper scythe.
  • Stepford Smiler: While Ruby does her best to hide it, her POVs following the Fall of Vale show that she's actively trying to repress the trauma caused by her failure to stop Terumi and the loss of her eye. She's also shown to be fending off how useless she feels now that she's stuck recovering at home, unable to help anyone.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Her entire fight with Terumi has her firing on all cylinders in pure fury at him. However, not only does her anger make her sloppy in their fight, it also just makes Terumi stronger.
  • Weak, but Skilled: She's incredibly adept in scythe combat and is very fast, but her attacks usually lack much force without wind up and she can be knocked out pretty easily. This comes up in her scythe spar with Ragna, where she lands far more hits and dodges many of Ragna's attacks, but Ragna manages to take them all and only needed a few of his attacks to connect for him to win the fight.
  • You Killed My Father: She develops a murderous hatred for Terumi after he reveals that he killed her mother, Summer Rose.

    Noel Vermillion

Noel Vermillion

The daughter of two Mistral nobles and a close friend of Tsubaki and Makoto, having graduated from Sanctum Academy alongside them. An incredibly shy and clumsy girl, but an effective long-range fighter with her twin battle pistols, the Nox Nyctores, Bolverk.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: While she's still the same Shrinking Violet she was in the games, she never once displays her canon counterpart's A-Cup Angst.
  • And I Must Scream: She suffers this fate in the aftermath of the destruction of Vale, as she's captured by Relius and forced to have her memories erased, all while suffering immense agony in a state of suspended animation.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: When she's under the influence of her Murakumo programming, she becomes an emotionless killing machine that will go through anything or anyone just to kill Penny.
  • Break the Cutie: The revelations that she's a Murakumo and a clone of someone else cause her to suffer a major breakdown, even repeating to herself that she isn't a real person until Ruby and Penny help her through it.
  • Clone Angst: After she learns that she's a Murakumo Unit and a clone of Saya, she suffers a big case of this trope. When Ruby discovers her poetry journal, she sees that her poems have gone from cheesy and goofy to existential and nihilistic, questioning her existence and if it's all a lie, which itself eventually devolves into scratched out repeating of "clone", "fake", and "monster" over and over again. She also expresses a lot of self-loathing that her existence came at Saya's expense.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: She's primarily a gunner and long-range fighter. While she isn't completely helpless in close range, that's only when she has Bolverk, and it's stated that even Ruby, someone who can't fight well without Crescent Rose, would completely trump her in unarmed combat if they fought.
  • Damsel in Distress: By the end of Volume 3, she's captured by Relius and Terumi, who proceed with the process to complete her transformation into Mu-12. It becomes her friends' mission to save her as soon as they gain a clue that could help them find her.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: According to Ozpin's student file on her, she was apparently a victim of the Ibukido disaster and was found by the Vermillions in a catatonic state. She was also taken advantage of a lot at Sanctum Academy due to her shy, nervous demeanor. Then later she learns that she's actually a clone of Saya that was intended to become an Apocalypse Maiden.
  • Dumb Blonde: Downplayed. She's by no means an idiot, but she does struggle more than her friends in her studies and is noted in Ozpin's student file to only be average in terms of academics.
  • Friendly Sniper: She settles into this role on the team. Unlike her more direct companions, she prefers to hang back and shoot from afar with Bolverk in sniper form, all while remaining amiable, if shy, with everyone.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She has a lot of plush animals on her bed. She even packs several of them for her team's mission in Chapter 55.
  • The Gunslinger: Her fighting style revolves entirely around her usage of Bolverk for long-range combat.
  • Happily Adopted: She was adopted by the Vermillions, a fact that she's aware of, but she both loves and considers them to be her true parents.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Thanks to her low self-esteem, she doesn't think highly of herself or her combative abilities. During initiation, she admits to Jaune that she considers herself a poor fighter and a coward for always freaking out on the inside. Thankfully, Jaune helps encourage her and tells her that she's far more capable than she gives herself credit for.
  • Lethal Chef: Her cooking somehow surpasses Epic Fail levels of awful, given that it's almost like an Eldritch Abomination and can put people in the infirmary with 2nd degree burns outside their body. Makoto even mentions that Noel once cooked a soup so rancid that when she force-fed it to a Beowolf, it melted the Grimm into a puddle.
  • Long-Range Fighter: Unlike her teammates, she tends to work best from a distance either as a sniper or gunner. During her battles, she often serves as long-range support for her team. This is in rather stark contrast to the games, where she was, ironically, a Close-Range Combatant.
  • Morality Pet: While not quite as prominent as Ruby or Jaune, she's this to Ragna as well, given that she was able to calm him down when he started going too far in his actions against Team CRDL.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Defied. While Ragna is completely aware of her resemblance to Saya, he chooses to ignore it and keep his distance, as he wants to see Noel as her own person and not a copy of the sister he hasn't seen in years and likely won't see again.
  • Reading Lips: Downplayed. She's not exactly great at this, but she's better than the rest of her friends due to her Semblance letting her see people talk from afar. During the Vytal Tournament, she was able to pick up on Neon's insults to Yang by reading her lips, able to pick up on how she insulted the blonde's hair and called her "top heavy".
  • Zombie Gait: In Chapter 39, she's described as moving with "an emotionless, almost zombie-like gait" after she succumbs to her Murakumo programming to kill Penny.

    Jaune Arc

Jaune Arc

A member of the Arc family, a long line of esteemed warriors, who seeks to follow in their footsteps. Despite being hapless and lacking in combat experience, he's nonetheless determined to prove himself. His weapon is Crocea Mors, a simple sword carried in a sheath that can collapse into a shield, which was wielded by his ancestor during Remnant's Great War.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: Since he confesses his fake transcripts to his teammates in private, he never gets blackmailed by Cardin here.
  • Adaptational Badass: Thanks to getting trained by Ragna earlier than he was trained by Pyrrha canonically, he becomes a much better fighter much faster. For example, his first fight with Cardin, which was originally a Curb-Stomp Battle in Cardin's favor, has him more evenly match his opponent before managing to knock Cardin out of the arena and secure a win.
  • Demoted to Extra: During the events of Volume 3, his role is significantly reduced compared to canon, with him largely being in the background during the Fall of Beacon.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He often berates and belittles himself. When Ragna gave a condescending remark about his fighting abilities in Chapter 14, he lamented that he wasn't wrong. While he does get plenty of encouragement from his teammates that help him overcome this issue, it comes back heavily in the fallout of Volume 3, where he lambasts himself for his failure to help any of his teammates and feels he's grown no better than when he started.
  • I Work Alone: He attempts this, telling Ragna that he can't accept his offer to teach him because he feels he needs to improve on his own. However, Ragna makes it clear that he isn't giving him a choice and drags him off to train.
  • Morality Pet: Becomes one of the people Ragna opens up to most, to the point of acting akin to an older brother to him.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: He's got a lot of physical power and durability, but Glynda notes that even after weeks of training, his swordsmanship remains rather poor and clumsy.

    Ragna

Ragna

The oldest of Team RNJR and most aggressive. Ragna is a foul-mouthed and temperamental fighter who came to Beacon under his master, Jubei's, orders to become more open. Despite being one of the most caustic students at Beacon, he shows a more caring side around his teammates after getting to know them better. Fitting his aggressive attitude, his main weapon is the Aramasa, an enormous claymore-style sword that can shift into a scythe.
  • Accidental Murder: As a child, he and his mother-figure, the Sister, were running and hiding from a Beowolf. When it got too close, Ragna's Semblance went active and killed the attacking Grimm, but it also devoured the Sister's soul in the process.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: While he's had it rough thanks to being all alone after his siblings were adopted, not to mention accidentally killing his mother-figure, this is still rather tame compared to the games. Unlike his canon series, he never got his arm cut off by a mind raped Jin, never met Terumi, was never left to die in the burning remains of his home and was adopted normally by Jubei rather than after all the aforementioned things happened to him.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In the games, while he was The Hero, he also started out as a criminal and relentless murderer who killed most that opposed him before Character Development kicked in. Here, he was never a criminal and starts out more heroic, and the only killings he commits are when he's turned into the Black Beast, where he has no control of himself.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed. While still powerful, he notably lacks some of his strongest attacks from the games (Dead Spike and Devoured by Darkness), with him needing to be in what's basically his Unlimited Mode to even use them, whereas canonically he could use them in his base form. However, he does train to better control it and by Chapter 49, he can use Devoured by Darkness as he would in the games.
  • Anti-Hero: Compared to everyone else on his team, he's rude, aggressive, and prone to violence, though he still has a strong dedication to doing what's right when all is said and done.
  • The Berserker: Downplayed. He's not Ax-Crazy, but Ragna has an absurdly short fuse and once his Unstoppable Rage hits, the level of violence he displays tends to be excessive. When he went berserk on Team CRDL, he almost outright killed Cardin, though he thankfully came to his senses before he could go through with anything. It gets played straight after he gets impaled and essentially becomes the Black Beast reborn, where he lashes out in a feral rage and lays waste to everything around him.
  • BFS: Aramasa's main form is a colossal single-edged claymore-esque sword, to the point where it's compared to a massive slab of metal, that he wields with ease.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Ragna had this towards Jin and Saya when they were children, getting into fights with anyone who picked on them. Even years later and despite their more cold relationship, he still has this, as his reaction to learning that Emerald manipulated Jin with her Semblance was to attack her in anger. He also has this towards Jaune due to being a Big Brother Mentor towards him. Upon hearing that Team CRDL had stolen his book, his first instinct was to find them and threaten them into submission.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Becomes this to Jaune, teaching him how to better fight and opening up emotionally around him, with Jaune looking up to Ragna as a result. The fact that Ragna also compares Jaune to his younger brother, Jin, helps add to it.
  • The Big Guy: Of Team RNJR, he's the most experienced and most powerful by a country mile, being able to best the likes of Team CFVY and Pyrrha Nikos in single combat. The rest of his team even call him their "big gun".
  • Blessed with Suck: His Semblance is one of the strongest combative ones around, but the ability to devour souls, it being tied to his temper, and his short fuse all make him both a deadly threat and a walking hazard to everyone around him.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Ozpin notes in his student file that despite his grades in academic subjects being middling to above average, he's actually very intelligent. His main issue is that he just doesn't care for any subject at Beacon that doesn't involve combat.
  • Bully Hunter: He's got a massive hatred for bullies, relentlessly beating them down and threatening them for their actions. However, it gets deconstructed in Chapter 20 where, after stopping Team CRDL from bullying Velvet, his actions almost get Cardin killed and he's punished alongside Team CRDL for his actions. Though he acknowledges that he went too far and promises not to do so again.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He grew up as an orphan, protecting his siblings from bullies. He was eventually left alone after both his brother and sister were adopted, and he accidentally killed his caretaker when he awakened his Semblance.
  • Decomposite Character: In the main series, he and Bloodedge were the same person due to him being sent back to the events of the Dark War. Here, Ozpin was Bloodedge, and it's confirmed that Ragna and Bloodedge in this story are two completely separate individuals.
  • Defiant Captive: Following the events of the Fall of Vale, he's been taken to Salem's castle and isn't allowed to leave, but he doesn't care how impossible escape seems, given how frequently he tries to bust his way out.
  • Happily Adopted: He was taken in by Jubei at a young age, and while they may bicker and trade barbs, they always laugh it off at the end of the day and truly do care for each other. Ragna even openly admits that Jubei's the closest thing to a father he's ever had.
  • Heel–Face Reincarnation: While Ragna is a rough and reckless person, he still ultimately wants to do right by others and protect people. This is in stark contrast to his past life as the Black Beast; the son of Salem and a monster that brought the world to ruin and is the reason for the existence of the Grimm. In addition, he's this to the original human form of the Beast, who was shown to be a Spoiled Brat and a Big Brother Bully, contrasting Ragna having a humbler upbringing and being a protective elder brother to his siblings.
  • Heroic RRoD: He unleashes everything he has in trying to kill Salem in Chapter 72, killing her over and over again for almost twelve hours straight. It does nothing to her and he collapses from sheer exhaustion after one final punch to the face.
  • Hidden Depths: For someone who comes across as a violent Leeroy Jenkins, he's remarkably stealthy when he needs to be, as he was able to tail Blake and Makoto for an entire night without either of them noticing his presence.
  • Iconic Attribute Adoption Moment: Ragna spends much of the story dressed in his teenage attire from his training days under Jubei. In Chapter 76, he gets the first half of his canon outfit (his black hakama), and later in Chapter 81 gains his signature crimson coat, letting him resemble his game counterpart.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He tends to act like a dick, but he's got a good sense of right and wrong and cares about his teammates.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: More often than not, his go-to method for solving problems is to rush in and beat the shit out of anything that gets in his way. When paired with Ruby's leadership to help direct him, it tends to work out. His immense strength compared to his competition, coupled with his Soul Eater abilities, allows this to go in his favor more often than not. However, it gets heavily torn apart come Volume 4, since being Salem's captive means his reckless approach is left utterly useless, as he's surrounded by those much stronger than he is and cunning enough to keep him in place. Even he acknowledges that he's relied too much on this method and he'll need to fight smarter rather than harder if he wants his freedom.
  • Only One Name: He doesn't have a surname. When he partners up with Ruby, it gets lampshaded.
    Ragna: (introducing himself) Ragna.
    Ruby: No last name?
    Ragna: No.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Even on a normal day, Ragna is undoubtedly the most powerful of his team and perhaps the strongest student in all of Beacon Academy, but this trope reaches its apex when he becomes the Black Beast, as he lays waste to everything around him. His second time becoming this, he smashed a massive hole into Amity Colosseum that briefly destabilized the entire structure and began a rampage across the city of Vale. Chapter 68 shows that his roars alone are powerful enough to reduce buildings to gravel and smoke.
  • Power Incontinence: As a child, he struggled to control his Semblance, as when it first activated, he accidentally devoured the soul of his mother figure. Years later, after the battle at the docks, he starts struggling to control it again, to the point of venturing out into the Emerald Forest by himself to fight without relying on it.
  • Reincarnation: It's revealed in the final chapters of Volume 3 that he's the rebirth of the Black Beast and by extension, the first-born son of Ozma and Salem.
  • Sinister Scythe: Aramasa's second form is a large scythe that he's used to cut down various Grimm and deflect projectiles via spinning it at high speeds. It's also much more prominent here than in canon since he makes more frequent use of the weapon's scythe form.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Easily THE most foul mouthed character in the story so far, often throwing out f-bombs with startling regularity. As flashbacks reveal, he was just as vulgar tongued when he was a little kid. Jubei outright tells him that he really needs to tone his language down.
  • Story-Breaker Power: His Semblance is the same as his Drive in the games, Soul Eater. Since all powers and superhuman abilities are fueled by Aura and by extension the soul, using it tends to net him victory in most fights given that it drains his opponents (weakening them mid-battle) while doing a lot of physical damage thanks to the sheer force behind his attacks and refueling his own strength all at once. Ozpin even notes what a devastating power it is, with Ragna subjecting Pyrrha Nikos to a Curb-Stomp Battle when he starts using it in their match. Two factors prevent it from making things too one-sided: 1) its draining effects don't work on Grimm due to them lacking souls and 2) Ragna really doesn't like using it unless he needs to thanks to the trauma of him accidentally devouring his caretaker's soul as a child.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: In the last couple chapters of Volume 1, he enters what's basically his Unlimited Mode. He becomes far more powerful, to the point of being an unstoppable juggernaut, but he loses all sense of control and becomes an Ax-Crazy destroyer. In Chapter 66, he ends up succumbing to it again after Jin impales him with Yukianesa, and it's revealed that this form is actually his awakened nature as the Black Beast reborn.
  • Super-Strength: He's shown to possess levels of strength well beyond other Huntsmen-in-training, having effortlessly decapitated a giant Nevermore with a single scythe swing (canonically, Ruby required Weiss' aid as well as built up momentum and a cliffside to perform the same feat), lifted and threw a Deathstalker into a ravine, reduced a Paladin's arm to scrap metal, and halted the stomp of a Goliath.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Downplayed. He's not evil, but he is a jerkass on a team comprised of far more overtly noble, heroic people.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: When Noel ends up opening a music box he owned, she sees a photo of a younger him with his siblings, smiling cheerfully. She questions just what could have happened to him to make him go from a happy-go-lucky kid to the violent, brooding man he is today.

Team BRNN (Brine)

    Blake Belladonna

Blake Belladonna

A cat Faunus in hiding and a former member of the White Fang, having left the organization due to its increasingly violent actions. A well-rounded fighter with her Variant Ballistic Chain Scythe named Gambol Shroud, she serves as the leader of Team BRNN.
  • Covert Pervert: She's an avid reader of the erotic novel series, Ninjas of Love, which she tries to keep hidden from others.
  • Domestic Abuse: In Ozpin's student file regarding her, he notes that there are subtle signs from her whenever Adam Taurus is brought up that indicate that her former partner mistreated her, and he warns his instructors to be cautious regarding the subject should it ever come up around her.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Thanks to her past in the White Fang, she has a very low opinion of herself. In Chapter 26, she lambasts herself while by herself in the bathroom for hiding her true nature from everyone, calling herself a coward.
  • The Leader: Of Team BRNN.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Discussed. Makoto notes that her attempt at hiding that she's a Faunus is actually very flimsy and easy to see through, but she also brings up that most people won't notice something they aren't looking for anyway, so it isn't that big an issue.
  • Trauma Button: A downplayed case, but she notably freezes up a bit just before she's about to fight Jin, as his fighting style reminded her of Adam. She recovers from this when, during their fight, she notes that while the styles are similar, their approaches couldn't be more different.

    Lie Ren

Lie Ren

A quiet, reserved student who enrolled in Beacon alongside his childhood friend, Nora Valkyrie. While a gifted martial fighter, he serves as his team's gunner with his bladed automatic pistols, StormFlower.
  • Fragile Speedster: He's shown to be very fast and acrobatic in a fight, but as seen in Chapter 14 when he sparred Noel, she only had to make a couple good shots to take him down.
  • The Gunslinger: Of the members of his team, his primary weapons are his duel pistols, Stormflower. In Chapter 14, he even engages in a gunslinger fight against Noel.
  • The One Guy: He's the only male member of Team BRNN.
  • Out of Focus: Of the main teams' members, he's had the least development or characterization throughout the first three volume of the story. Though he does get a bit of attention in Chapter 52 during the events of Mountain Glenn, where he confesses about his Dark and Troubled Past, as well as what drives him to be a Huntsman.

    Nora Valkyrie

Nora Valkyrie

An energetic girl and a childhood friend of Lie Ren. Fitting her headfirst, excitable nature, she's one of Team BRNN's most physical members and relies on her trusty war-hammer/grenade launcher hybrid, Magnhild.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: She's the most energetic and loud of Team BRNN, as well as having the physical strength to give fighters like Yang a run for their money. Often when she enters a fight, it usually involves her being a Large Ham.
  • "Metaphor" Is My Middle Name: In Chapter 11, she says "Awesome stories" is her middle name when she and Makoto start bonding over telling outlandish tales. Ren points out this isn't the first time she's changed her "middle name" either.
  • Odd Friendship: Her friendship with Ren is this given how polar opposite they are from each other. Ozpin muses in his file on Ren how they prove that the opposite of how birds of a feather flock together is equally true.

    Makoto Nanaya

Makoto Nanaya

A perky squirrel Faunus from Mistral who came to Beacon with her closest friends, Tsubaki and Noel. After initiation, she becomes Blake's partner and closest confidant regarding her past in the White Fang. Amongst her teammates, she's a powerhouse who fights with twin cross-guard tonfa named Unfaltering Butterfly.
  • Book Dumb: She's smart where it counts and has proven to be insightful when it comes to how people feel, but she's also a rather poor student, with Blake and Tsubaki calling her out on needing to improve academically.
  • Composite Character: Her being Blake's partner, as well as tagging along with her when looking for the White Fang in Volume 1, gives her elements of both of Blake's canon love interests, Yang and Sun. She gets more elements of the two throughout the second volume of the story, such as setting up the intervention regarding Blake overworking herself, as well as being her partner to the dance.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: It's noted by Tsubaki during the night before initiation in Chapter 3 that she drew a lot of attention from students of both genders (some even tripping over each other) when she was walking around in her revealing night attire.
  • I Hate Past Me: She admits to Blake that in the past, she was incredibly bitter and violent towards humans for all the suffering they put her and other Faunus through, and there was a time when she actually considered taking part in the White Fang's crusade against humanity. She tends to look back on her past self with a lot of self-loathing and hates wondering what she could have become had she never met Tsubaki and Noel.
  • Only in It for the Money: Discussed in Chapter 52. Her initial motivation for becoming a Huntress was to make money to support her family, not caring for much else. However, years later, she looked back and realized that her reasons were far more self-centered, wanting to relish in standing above those who brought her down. By the present, she still wants to make money for her family, but she also wants to help the people close to her out of kindness.
  • Prehensile Tail: She can use her tail to block attacks and punch people in the face, as seen when she blocked an Ursa's strike and threw several tail strikes at Cardin in rapid succession.
  • Scars Are Forever: Adam slashing away at her stomach after their fight in Chapter 69 left her with a permanent scar there. Even over a month into her trip across Anima and long after the events of the Fall of Vale, it's still present, as seen during Penny's POV in Chapter 77.
  • Secret-Keeper: She quickly and easily sees through Blake's disguise to hide her Faunus heritage, but promises her that she'll help keep the secret. When the rest of the team finds out after the incident at the docks, they also agree to help keep it secret.
  • Secretly Selfish: In the past, at least. She claimed to want to be a Huntress to make money to support her family, but years later would realize that she really just wanted the chance to stand above the people who treated her like crap.

Team TSYP (Zap)

    Tsubaki Yayoi

Tsubaki Yayoi

The only child of the Yayoi family as well as its scion. She's a long time friend of Makoto and Noel, going back to their times at Sanctum Primary school, as well as a childhood friend of Weiss and Jin. Tsubaki is a highly balanced warrior who wields the ancestral weapon of her family, the Izayoi, which serves her well in her position as Team TSYP's leader.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Subverted. While Tsubaki obviously pines for Jin, she's just as put off by his arrogant, cold-hearted attitude as everyone else is. She tends to call him out on his faults and tries to help him overcome them.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Weiss muses in Chapter 63 about how Tsubaki greatly looked up to the Ace Ops in their childhood and gushed about the idea of joining them. During the events of Chapter 75, General Ironwood arrives at the Yayoi manor with the offer for Tsubaki to join the Ace Ops, and she accepts.
  • Book Smart: She's among the most academically intelligent students in Beacon Academy, tied only with her partner, Weiss, for THE most intelligent.
  • By-the-Book Cop: Student variation. She's a major stickler for the rules, as the reason Makoto would rather she not find out about the White Fang investigation is because she would shut it down immediately and report it to the authorities.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Weiss pokes fun at her for how much of a Hakumen fangirl she is in Chapter 17.
  • The Leader: Of Team TSYP.
  • Light 'em Up: She can unleash large bursts of light using Izayoi that can blind opponents and leave them wide open to attack.
  • Morality Pet: Shown to be one for Jin, as he notably lightens up when interacting with her, something Kagura notes.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After learning from Ruby and Penny that Mercury and Emerald manipulated Yang into attacking the former, she's wracked with guilt over having not believed her teammate.
  • Overranked Soldier: At the end of Chapter 75, she becomes a member of the Ace Ops, a team within the Atlas military composed of the best amongst the graduating elite, despite the fact that she's still in her late teens and nowhere close to graduating yet. According to Ironwood, the reasons for him giving her the position stem from her combat prowess displayed during the Fall of Vale, him wanting to have her weapon (the Izayoi) under his direct command, and his need for people who will be unquestioningly loyal to him.
  • Stranger in a Familiar Land: Her POV in Chapter 75 shows how out of place she feels in her old home, no longer being able to recognize it like she could when she was little.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: It's noted by Yang that Tsubaki's mother, Sumiye Yayoi, is pretty much an older version of her team leader in terms of physical appearance.

    Weiss Schnee

Weiss Schnee

Heiress to the Schnee family and the childhood friend of Tsubaki Yayoi and Jin Kisaragi.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed. While she still has her early jerkass attitude, she's at least a little nicer towards Ruby, even showing sympathy for her despite them being on separate teams. She also lacks the original envy she had about not being selected as her team's leader, though that has more to do with Tsubaki, someone she grew up with and respects, being her leader more than anything else.
  • Ambiguously Bi: She's shown to have a crush on Jin, but her initial reaction to meeting Pyrrha comes across as a Celebrity Crush, something Makoto wastes no time lampshading.
Makoto (thoughts): I can't tell if Schnee's trying to kiss up to Pyrrha or just plain kiss her.
  • The Atoner: In Chapter 61, it's implied that the reason she wants herself and Yang to continue in the Vytal Tournament instead of Pyrrha, despite Pyrrha being the team's best fighter, is in part motivated by the guilt of having insensitively treated her like an icon on a pedestal, something she completely loathes.
  • An Ice Person: Her most used Dust element is ice, as she freezes the ground and traps several Beowolves in place for Tsubaki to kill and does the same with the Death Stalker's tail.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Her frequent praising of Pyrrha is this. As seen through Pyrrha's POV, Weiss drawing attention to Pyrrha's accomplishments makes her rather uncomfortable since it essentially only acknowledges her as the "Invincible Girl" rather than as a person, even if the praise means well. She's made aware of how this affected Pyrrha in Chapter 48.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: As seen by the strained smile she had watching Tsubaki and Jin dance together in Chapter 50, she had a crush on Jin. However, seeing that Tsubaki also had feelings for him led to her putting those desires aside, even if she wasn't happy about it.
  • Jerkass Realization: She has a subtle one after hearing an offhand comment Yang makes regarding Pyrrha's true feelings about being put on a pedestal. It causes her to realize that she treated Pyrrha in a way she despises, leading to Weiss trying to make amends by keeping her out of the spotlight during the Vytal Tournament.
  • Morality Pet: Shown to be one for Jin, since he notably lightens up when interacting with her, something that Kagura notes.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite her initial dislike towards Ruby, she expressed genuine sympathy for her when she was on the receiving end of Ragna's bad attitude in Chapter 11.
  • Precision F-Strike: She's someone who refuses to use foul language, so it becomes a major shock when Sun's antics cause her to hit a Rage Breaking Point and let out some strong cursing.
    Yang: Okay, Weiss sto-
Weiss: STAY THE FUCK OUT OF THIS XIAO LONG!

    Yang Xiao Long

Yang Xiao Long

The elder half-sister of Ruby Rose, who's kind, energetic, and carries a love for combat.
  • The Big Gal: She's physically the tallest and most powerful member of Team TSYP, utilizing a very physical fighting style that relies on being in the thick of it.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She's very protective of her younger sister. She gets incredibly pissed when Weiss starts being rude to her and immediately rushes her to the nurse's office when she accidentally goes too far in their sparring match. She also completely freaks out with worry when she learns that Ruby went to confront the Black Beast by herself.
  • Composite Character: Her being Pyrrha's partner, crush, and primary love interest gives her aspects that Jaune possessed in canon.
  • Decomposite Character: Aspects of her character from her home series are split off to other characters. For example, her status as Blake's partner is given to Makoto, while her being physically broken and forced to recover at home is given to Ruby.
  • Hates Their Parent: After she learns the truth about her biological mother from Luna, she grows to despise her. In Chapter 62, after she learns from Qrow that he has an idea where Raven will end up, she tells him that she has no interest in finding her anymore, deciding that she's not worth the effort. When Qrow offers to pass along a message, Yang tells him that the only thing she has to say to Raven is for her to "piss off", making it clear she wants nothing to do with her.
  • It's All My Fault: Her more temperamental attitude after learning the truth about her mother was due to self-loathing. She blames herself for almost getting Ruby killed in her hunt for answers years ago, and now that she has those answers, she feels like she risked her sister's life for nothing.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She's briefly crestfallen when Pyrrha tells her that she couldn't ask her crush to the dance, but she opts to let go and help Pyrrha out, only wanting her to be happy. Of course, she learns shortly after that the one Pyrrha wanted to ask out was her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She has a moment of this when she calms down after snapping in anger, realizing that she's lashing out at and terrifying Pyrrha and Weiss. She ends up backing against a wall and tearfully apologizing to both of them.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: When she sees Ruby with Penny and briefly assumes they're on a date, she immediately enters what Ruby calls "Protective Big Sister Mode" and tries to intimidate Penny away. Though she drops this after spending a conversation getting to know Penny and becomes a Shipper on Deck for the two.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: Easiest way to gain her wrath is to cut her hair, regardless of if it was accidental or intentional.
    • Jaune learned this the hard way after he accidentally cut some of it off in their first spar.
Yang: GET BACK HERE AND DIE LIKE A MAN YOU LITTLE BITCH!!
      Jaune: SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!
    • Blake's student file also brings up that she accidentally cut off some of Yang's hair and paid the price for it.

    Pyrrha Nikos

Pyrrha Nikos

A champion tournament fighter from Mistral known as the "Invincible Girl".
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: In Volume 3, Pyrrha struggled with learning the true, dark history of Remnant, as well as the possibility of losing herself if she took on the Fall Maiden powers and accidentally killing Penny during their match in the Vytal Tournament. None of these happen here, as Amber was long since dead before the story began, so she's never called upon to become the next Fall Maiden, nor does she struggle with learning the truth of the world. She also never kills Penny since neither of them were competing in the tournament at that point.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: In the main series, she only ever had a crush on Jaune and was straight by all appearances. Here, while she starts with a crush on Jaune, she later develops feelings for Yang, making her bisexual.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": In Chapter 18, Yang almost outs her when she's in disguise before backtracking. This leads to Pyrrha playing along with Yang and showing that despite being The Ace, acting is not one of her skills.
Pyrrha: Oh Yang, you have bested me. Woe unto me for my failure.
Yang (thoughts): Huh, so Pyrrha is not a good actor, good to know.
  • Broken Ace: She's a champion fighter who is loved and admired by damn near everyone, but she's been put on a pedestal because of her victories and suffers from having no real friends, only people who view her as an idol to be gawked at.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: She has this problem like she did in her home series, only this time, Yang is the one she's in love with. A major reason why she has trouble confessing her feelings is because Yang is the first genuine friendship she's ever had, and while she'd like for it to become something more, she's also terrified of ruining it.
  • Graceful Loser: After Ragna bests her in battle, she takes it in stride and thanks him for the exhilarating match.
  • Has a Type: The author's notes of Chapter 43 lampshade that between her previous crush on Jaune (both in canon and in the story) and her current infatuation with Yang, Pyrrha probably has a thing for blondes.
  • Loved by All: She's a widely renowned tournament champion admired for her skills by civilian and Huntsmen alike, with Ozpin originally choosing her as a candidate for becoming the next Maiden. However, it's deconstructed, as her being so revered has left her on a pedestal that's made it impossible for her to make friends, everyone seeing her as beyond them. Making matters worse, it's made clear to the readers that Izanami fully intends to exploit Pyrrha's status as this to further along the creation of Kusanagi.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: She dons a pair of these as part of one of her disguises to hide from her fans.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Downplayed. She doesn't outright attack anyone, but she gets incredibly pissed when people insult Yang.
    • When Neon insults Yang during the match between TSYP and FNKI, Pyrrha crushes the soda in her hands and glares at Neon with immense rage.
    • When she overhears some students deride Yang after her match with Mercury, she has to walk away to clear her head. Her anger bleeds out enough that she loses control of her Semblance and twists every lamp post she walks past like a pretzel.
  • The Worf Effect: After Ragna starts using his Semblance in their fight, she's quickly defeated despite having a reputation as being unbeatable. Weiss even has a hard time registering the idea that Pyrrha can actually lose.
  • Worthy Opponent: She considers Ragna to be this, openly defending his victory when Weiss derides him.

Team JSMN (Jasmine)

    Jin Kisaragi

Jin Kisaragi

The heir to the Kisaragi family and Ragna's younger brother, as well as the leader of Team JSMN.
  • Accidental Murder: He's committed this trope twice in his life. In Chapter 66, we learn that an envious cousin of his adoptive family tried to kill him when he was named the heir, only for him to inadvertently impale the cousin with Yukianesa in self-defense. The second time is in the present, where during his fight with Ragna, Emerald's hallucinations trick him into stabbing his brother in the chest, briefly killing him.
  • The Ace: He's regarded as "The Pride of Atlas Academy". According to Ciel, he's garnered the highest scholastic and combative merits of the entire school and has won all but one of his fights. Said fight was against Ace Ops leader Clover Ebi as part of a demonstration, and even then, he did better against the seasoned graduate than most.
  • Adaptational Angst Downgrade: He was never mind raped into maiming his brother and, by all accounts, he was adopted into the Kisaragi family normally rather than them finding him wandering aimlessly after the loss of everything he held dear to him.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: As Ragna explains when talking with Jaune, he helped in taking care of Saya whenever she got sick. Canonically, he was a Big Brother Bully towards her. In addition, while he still despises Noel, he's capable of recognizing that his hatred is misplaced and starts working with Tsubaki to try and overcome it.
  • Adaptation Personality Change: His frosty, jerkass personality is in-line with his portrayal in the games, but he notably lacks the obsessive, murderous insanity he had whenever he was in Ragna's presence.
  • Broken Ace: He's considered Atlas Academy's best student, is a highly skilled warrior with the highest academic achievements one could hope to earn, and became the heir to the house of Kisaragi thanks to being one of the few capable of wielding their ancestral sword, Yukianesa. However, his status as heir to his adoptive family has brought him nothing but hardship, as his relatives actively try to kill him out of jealousy, with his grandfather enabling it to make him a stronger successor. Everything he's endured has led to him becoming emotionally distant and uncaring to all but a very select few.
  • An Ice Person: His Semblance and sword allow him to manifest waves of ice to freeze his enemies solid.
  • Jerkass: His first moment in the story is insulting Team FNKI both before and after defeating them and calling them worthless. Neon even calls him a jerkface when he leaves.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While he's usually colder than the snowy landscape of Solitas, he has his moments to show that deep down, he's a decent person where it counts. The time he spends with Tsubaki and Weiss show a much warmer side to him, and he tells Ragna to give Yang his condolences for what happened to her after the match against Mercury. He even moves to immediately defend the audience members at the Vytal Tournament when the Black Beast attempted to attack them, showing that despite his attitude, he's just as dedicated to defending the innocent as the other heroes.
  • The Leader: He serves as this for Team JSMN.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Emerald ceases her hallucination on him during his battle with Ragna in the tournament, he sees that he impaled his own brother. He's left completely horrified as he tearfully begs the dying Ragna for forgiveness.
  • Reincarnation: While it's originally implied at the beginning of Volume 4, it's fully shown in Chapter 75 that he's the rebirth of Ozma and Salem's second-born son.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: His loathing of Noel, and later Penny, is rooted in their resemblance to Saya and how it's too perfect to be a coincidence. While his reasoning is heavily flawed, he is technically correct in that it really isn't coincidental, since Noel and Penny are clones of Saya.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He was a pretty nice kid growing up. Ragna even compares him to Jaune while Tsubaki and Weiss remember him as being shy, friendly, and curious during their childhoods. Flash forward to years later where he's grown up into quite a cold hearted asshole.
  • When He Smiles: He usually always has a serious glower on his face, which makes the moments he smiles all the more notable. When he meets up with Tsubaki and Weiss for the first time in years, he actually smiles. Kagura even lampshades it.
Kagura: You two must have some kind of magical powers. I think that's the first time we've ever actually seen him smile.
  • Workaholic: He's shown working in his dorm room on assignments that aren't even due until next semester. Kagura calls him out on how he needs to loosen up and have fun for once in his life.

    Ciel Soleil

Ciel Soleil

A no-nonsense, hard-working student who prefers to adhere to strict schedules.
  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed. While she doesn't get much prominence, she does get more than her single scene with Penny in V3.
  • Brutal Honesty: She tends to be incredibly blunt when explaining her perspective, especially to her teammates.
Ciel: Fine, but since the original plan for the day has been tampered with, Mai will be leading us.
    Mai: What!? Why me?
Ciel: Because I believe you to be more suitable for the task than Kagura.
Kagura: (faux pain) Oof, dearest Ciel, your words wound me so.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She has her moments, such as in Chapter 67 when the Grimm invasion of Vale begins.
Kagura (After seeing his attacks aren't working): Dammit! This would be way easier if I had a weapon!
Ciel: Yes, we have eyes. We can see that.
  • Workaholic: Perhaps more so than even Jin. She plans out and makes rigorous schedules for almost everything.

    Kagura Mutsuki

Kagura Mutsuki

The laidback heir to the Mutsuki family.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While in the series, he was one of the few characters to start off genuinely heroic and a decent person, he was also a raging alcoholic and a Handsome Lech at his worst. Given that he's aged down to eighteen here, his alcoholism is completely removed, and his perverted nature is toned down to him just being a flirt.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed. He's still a powerful warrior and is comparable to his leader, but he's noted to not be as good, having lost to him in prior bouts. This isn't the case in the games, where Kagura is shown to be Jin's equal, if not outright superior, as a fighter.
  • BFS His main weapon is a sword named Black Dragon, which is so large he can use it as a surface to lean against.
  • Blow You Away: His Semblance, Black Gale, allows him to blast powerful gusts of wind at his enemies. He often uses this in tandem with Black Dragon to create razor winds.
  • The Casanova: Jin derides him as this for his frequent flirting with his female peers. The first thing he does when he gets to Beacon is make a pass at a group of second year female students. He also ends up surrounded by a number of admirers during the school dance and flirts with them.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: According to him, he was held back for a year at Atlas because he'd rather do what feels right than what he's told. May even lampshades this trope after hearing it.
  • Shipper on Deck: He tries to get Jin to hang out with Tsubaki and Weiss a lot. He comments that it's easy to tell that they're helping him lighten up.

    Mai Natsume

Mai Natsume

The kindhearted daughter of the Natsume family.
  • Fangirl: She's a major fan of the Happy Huntresses, having grown up hearing all about Robyn Hill and the others as they joined over the years.
  • Happily Adopted: After she was disowned by her birth father, her mother sent her to live with her relatives, the Natsume family. They fully accepted her for who she was and were nothing but sweet with her, with Mai loving them back equally and becoming their daughter.
  • Nice Girl: Of Team JSMN, she's the most overtly polite, being excitable and friendly with everyone she interacts with. Even with Jin's caustic attitude, she still sees him as a friend and tries to help him loosen up.
  • Shipper on Deck: She tries to help get Jin together with either Tsubaki or Weiss, and is seen helping Kagura plan out a surprise rendezvous between them in Chapter 44.
  • Trans Tribulations: As her talk with May in Chapter 80 shows, she struggles with the fear of coming out as a trans woman due to the abuse she was subjected to by her birth father, who tried to force her to conform to what he wanted for her.

Major Allies

    Ozpin

Professor Ozpin

The Headmaster of Beacon Academy who is locked in a shadow war with Salem.
  • Big Good: He's Beacon's Headmaster and is the main leader in the fight against Salem, with the other Headmasters answering to him.
  • Composite Character: One of his past lives in this story was Bloodedge.
  • Master Swordsman: Despite his primary weapon being a cane, he's highly adept with swords as well. When Ragna allowed him to use Aramasa, he noted with awe the skill and grace displayed by the Headmaster while wielding it, as if the sword was made for him. This is one of the signs to his past identity as Bloodedge.
  • No Body Left Behind: When he's killed by Cinder in Chapter 70, it's shown that she blasted him with so much power that she completely vaporized him, leaving nothing behind.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's a very patient and understanding Headmaster, letting Teams RNJR and BRNN off the hook when they were taken into police custody after the battle at the docks and directly helps Ragna when he's going through struggles controlling his Semblance. He's also shown to be more or less letting them get away with bending the rules so they can stop the White Fang.

    Rachel Alucard

Rachel Alucard

A vampire and a longtime friend of Professor Ozpin, who aids in his quest to stop Terumi and Salem.
  • Dance Battler: During her fight with Ragna, she elegantly dances around his every attack as if it were all just a stage performance to her.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed. While she is amiable with the likes of Ozpin and Jubei, her constant insults grate on the nerves of his other allies like Ironwood and Goodwitch, the latter of whom wonders how Ozpin puts up with her. Within minutes of meeting her, even Ruby is just as fed up with her attitude as Ragna, wanting to leave as soon as possible.
  • Good is Not Nice: She's one of Ozpin's closest friends and allies in their shadow war against Salem, but she's a condescending jerk who tends to throw insults at almost everyone barring her butler, Valkenhayn.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: She tends to be a snarky asshole to most of her allies, but she usually brings up a good point in the process. She's most condescending with Ironwood, but she isn't wrong in that his brash, reckless actions threaten to make things worse, something that even Ozpin and Glynda agree with despite their reservations regarding her attitude.
  • Last of His Kind: When she first introduces herself to Ragna and Ruby, she states that she's the last of the vampires.
  • Little Miss Snarker: She looks barely older than thirteen and she frequently trades snark and back sass with everyone she interacts with.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She's normally calm, snarky, and self-assured in all situations. If she ever loses these traits, it's a sure sign of how bad things are. The two most significant times she loses them are when the Black Beast awakens, where she's reduced to panicked terror.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Lampshaded in Ozpin's POV in Chapter 10, where he notes that he knows she's much older than she looks. She operated behind the scenes during the Great War eighty years prior, knew Ozpin's past life as the Wizard, and is ancient enough to remember the Black Beast's rampage from untold millennia ago.
  • Tranquil Fury: When she meets Relius during the Fall of Vale and learns of his role in the death of her father, though she appears completely calm, it's clear that she's seething with rage. Relius even describes her wrath as "so chilling even the climates of Solitas would seem warm by comparison."

    Penny Polendina (Spoilers)

Penny Polendina/Kappa-10

A rather odd girl that Team BRNN first meets as Tukson's employee. She's later revealed to be a Murakumo Unit known as Kappa-10.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In this story, she's a Murakumo Unit on the run from her original creators and is caring for her ailing father. She's shown to be plagued by fears of being found and taken back to the labs, where she was tortured and subjected to Laser-Guided Amnesia.
  • Adaptational Sexuality: While nothing is known or revealed regarding her romantic preferences in canon, it's made clear in this story that she has feelings for Ruby.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: In the web series, she had orange hair. Here, she's blonde, but dyes her hair orange to keep her identity hidden. During the events of V4, a lack of orange hair dye in her travels across Anima leads to her blonde roots growing out.
  • Adoptive Name Change: While on the run, she became Pietro's daughter and permanently goes by Penny Polendina rather than her numerical designation of Kappa-10.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Chapter 27 reveals via flashback that the name "Penny" originally began as a nickname Pietro gave her when she was still held at the testing facility. After her escape, it would go on to become her true name.
    • Nora tends to happily call her "Penny Pops".
  • Bad Liar: She's not very good at lying, given that she tends to get the hiccups whenever she does so. Though she can keep things hidden either through lies of omission or by removing context so she's technically being honest.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's a total sweetheart to almost everyone, but when she gets pissed, it's a truly terrifying sight. The biggest case of this for her happens in Chapter 66, where, after learning that Mercury was the one who killed Tukson, she enters a state of Tranquil Fury and fights with the clear intent to murder him in cold blood. She would have succeeded too, had Ragna not become the Black Beast.
  • The Big Gal: Of Team JNNPR, she's undoubtedly this, being the group's most powerful member and possessing superior strength to any of them, given how she can easily uproot trees and hold up collapsing buildings.
  • Big Sister Instinct: As the 10th Murakumo Unit, she was created before Noel, the 12th of their kind. She even refers to Noel as her little sister, and quickly becomes protective of her not long after they meet. When she first hears of her sister's emotional turmoil, she immediately rushes to help her through it. That's before getting into her willingness to go against her creator, Relius Clover, just to keep Noel safe, despite her fear of the man for all he's done to her.
  • Break the Cutie: In the aftermath of Tukson's death, her cheerful attitude is completely gone and in its place is a broken mess. When she calls Team BRNN and is convinced to open up about it, she breaks down sobbing until Ren is able to comfort her.
  • Daddy's Girl: It's made clear through their interactions and her taking care of him that Penny absolutely loves her father, and he loves her just as much, only wanting her to be happy and free.
  • Determinator: Through sheer force of will, she's able to fight against her programming to kill Noel. To top it off, after Noel is captured by Relius, she makes it clear that she's going to help save her, come hell or high water.
  • Dreadful Musician: Played with. Ruby is able to convince Yang to let Penny be the DJ for the school dance, but she starts off terrible, with her music being loud and bad enough to hurt Blake and Makoto's ears from across campus. However, Ren notes that she's been frequently practicing and improving since then. By the time the dance rolls around, she's considered pretty decent at it.
  • Emotionless Girl: In flashbacks to when she was in the facility, she showed the same emotionless nature her younger sister, Nu-13, has in the present. Well after her liberation and by the time we see her in the story, she's much more expressive.
  • Flying Brick: When in her full Murakumo form, she's capable of flying through the air extremely fast, and she's shown to be tough enough to knock Ignis into a building with enough force to completely collapse the entire structure.
  • Happily Adopted: Penny has no actual relation to Pietro and was more or less adopted by him when they went on the run, but she clearly loves her adoptive father more than anything.
  • Healing Factor: While she has yet to use it, her POV in Chapter 39 reveals that she has the same self-repair protocols that Nu does, meaning she can heal herself from severe injuries. However, she needs to be in her full Murakumo form to use them.
  • Lethal Chef: According to Pietro, her cooking gave him a stomach ulcer and hardly resembled food. Despite this, it's nowhere near as bad as Noel's cooking since it didn't do anything more than that.
  • Master of the Levitating Blades: Just like canon, though thanks to being a Murakumo here, she lacks the wires connected to them since they naturally float.
  • Pedestrian Crushes Car: She saves Zwei by getting between him and an oncoming truck, stopping it with her bare hands and no injuries to her person while the truck winds up with a crumbled hood.
  • Precision F-Strike: For the most part, she's very clean-mouthed and doesn't swear much, if at all. However, when she saw Ragna get impaled and almost killed by Neo, combined with Roman's glee at the whole thing, she shouted "You FUCKING BASTARD!" as she proceeded to attack the crime lord.
  • Psychic Radar: Her Semblance, Homing Beacon, is essentially this, as it allows her to sense the general direction of people whom she's formed close bonds with, such as her father, Ruby, and Noel. However, if the bond is erased, such as when Noel is captured and subjected to Laser-Guided Amnesia, then she can no longer locate them.
  • Super-Strength: Thanks in large part to being a Murakumo Unit, she's inhumanly powerful, having stopped a fast moving truck, easily uprooted trees, and even accidentally crushed Yang's hand during a handshake without meaning to when the latter was putting a lot of force into said handshake.
  • This Is a Drill: While not a conventional example, Chapter 77 shows that she's learned how to spin her blades at extreme speeds, turning them into a makeshift drill. This comes in handy for digging down to one of Relius Clover's underground sub-labs.
  • Tranquil Fury: After Mercury makes an offhand comment about killing Tukson, she enters this state, becoming akin to the Emotionless Girl she once was back at the labs all while directing pure, murderous wrath at the assassin for killing her friend.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: Here, Pietro is one of the researchers who worked with her for combat testing after she was created, meaning he isn't her creator like in the show.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: She's shown to have immense strength and speed, easily overpowering the likes of Yang and moving so fast she seems like a green and orange blur, but she has very little in the way of actual unarmed combat skills. When fighting Mercury, her opponent struggled not to laugh at how all her punches and kicks were easily telegraphed in spite of her overwhelming strength and speed.
  • Voice Changeling: Despite being a clone of Saya, she doesn't sound anything like her. As she reveals in Chapter 40, this is because she has very precise control of her vocal cords and can completely disguise her original voice. The only times she reverts back to her old voice are when she's in immense distress, such as when she sees Ragna get impaled and in the aftermath of Tukson's death.

    Jubei

Jubei/Mitsuyoshi

One of the fabled Six Heroes who fought against the Black Beast long ago and the master/adoptive father of Ragna, Luna, and Sena.
  • Action Dad: He's one of the deadliest warriors in the entire world and he's both the biological father of Kokonoe (though they are estranged) and the adoptive father of Ragna, Luna, and Sena.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While he was always a Nice Guy in the series, his Trickster Mentor attributes are heavily downplayed in this fic, in large part because he was just as in the dark about Ragna being the Black Beast as everyone else.
  • Big Damn Heroes: His introduction into the story is saving Luna from a Goliath with a single sword strike.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's a borderline unstoppable Grimm killing machine in a fight despite being old enough to predate kingdoms. When they first meet, Team RNJR immediately looks up to him and consider him to be very cool, with his jovial, polite personality reinforcing that idea.
  • Handicapped Badass: He's missing his right eye, but that doesn't stop him from being a One-Man Army who can effortlessly slay Grimm as large and terrifying as Goliaths.
  • The Mentor: He's this to Ragna, Luna, and Sena, having trained them in the art of combat.
  • One-Man Army: His introduction into the story is easily slaying a Goliath large enough to shake the earth with each step. If the numerous waves of Grimm he slaughtered defending Auburn Village and Vale don't cement him as this, then the fact that he's one of the heroes who fought against the Black Beast long ago will.
  • Parental Substitute: He's basically the adoptive father of Ragna, Luna, and Sena. Ragna openly considers him to be the closest thing he has to a father. While they certainly trade barbs, it's clear the sentiment is returned, as Jubei regards Ragna like a son. Luna and Sena are also openly treated as Jubei's kids not long after he takes them in.
  • Really 700 Years Old: While he looks the part of an elderly man, he's far older than that. Having fought in the Dark War against the Black Beast, he long predates the existence of kingdoms, putting him well over a few thousand years old.

    Platinum the Trinity

Luna, Sena, and Trinity

Originally a young orphan girl named Luna, she is now Jubei's student alongside her brother, Sena, whom she now shares a body with. Their shared body also hosts one of the Six Heroes, Trinity Glassfille.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Luna and Sena were orphaned when the Branwen tribe raided their village, leaving them to fend for themselves to survive. It's also shown that Luna in particular was heavily traumatized by the ordeal and suffers a panic attack when she sees Yang in Chapter 46.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Luna's bratty personality is heavily toned down and much more emphasis is placed on her kinder qualities, such as her care for her brother and her growing friendship with Emerald. In addition, while her canonical envy towards Ragna's closeness to Jubei is still present when they first meet, by the end of Chapter 56, she moves past it entirely.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Technically speaking, Luna is this to Ragna, as both of them were taken in by Jubei, making them siblings by adoption. She's also envious of Ragna's closeness to their adoptive father and openly insults him to the point of the whole thing dissolving into a swearing fit. She's eventually able to get over her envy and become more polite with Ragna, though she still dislikes him.
  • Ascended Extra: Trinity is this. Canonically, she would only be present for plot important moments and only for brief intervals of time, with Luna and Sena being unable to interact with her. Here, she can interact with the twins just fine and can just as easily interact with others.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Luna is the older twin to Sena and is highly protective of him, as she took it upon herself to care for her brother after the Branwen tribe killed their family. When they're in danger, her immediate reaction is to try and get Sena to safety, and she's overcome with anger when a Centinel attacks Sena and tears off his arm.
  • Character Focus: Of the three, Luna tends to get the lion's share of character development and page-time, in large part due to their shared body originally being hers, her friendship with Emerald, and having the most vices to overcome.
  • Comic-Book Movies Don't Use Codenames: Despite being called Platinum the Trinity in the Author's Notes of the story, they're otherwise never referred to by that In-Universe and only go by whoever's in control at the time.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Luna and Sena's home village was attacked years ago by the Branwen tribe, forcing them to live alone and steal to stay alive.
  • Happily Adopted: Luna and Sena are Jubei's adoptive kids, and with how much of a kindhearted father-figure he is to them, it's easy to see why they adore him so much.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: Luna tends to be just as bad as Ragna when it comes to vulgarity, and she's even the first character to let out a c-bomb, albeit one that's cut off before it gets passed the c.
  • Magic Staff: As always, their main weapon is the Muchourin; a mythical staff that can manifest any inorganic matter they can think of and even emit powerful bursts of energy. It also functions as a makeshift flashlight.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: A sibling example with Luna and Sena. Luna is short-tempered, foul-mouthed, and is the thrill-seeker of the two, which contrasts Sena's soft-spoken, polite nature and his aversion to violence.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: A downplayed case. Of the three souls, Sena is the nice, being friendly, soft-spoken, and averse to violence. Meanwhile, Luna is the mean, being the most aggressive, vulgar-tongued, and prone to vices such as envy, though she's at worst a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. Lastly, Trinity is the in-between, as while she's an even-tempered woman who's respectful with the few she's able to interact with, she has an edge to her regarding Terumi (though it's hard to blame her) and is very much a case of Good Is Not Soft.
  • One-Woman Army: Trinity proves to be just as much of one as Jubei, wiping out wave after wave of ariel Grimm during their defense of Vale.
  • Power of Creation: The Muchourin allows them to materialize any non-living matter they can think of. The drawback is that more complex objects require greater concentration, meaning even after over a month of training, Luna and Sena can only manifest simplistic objects like stone slabs. Trinity, meanwhile, shows what a master of the Muchourin can do, as she uses it to summon powerful energy arrays and seal holes in Vale's defenses during the city's fall at the end of V3.
  • Sharing a Body: Luna's body now holds the souls of her twin brother, Sena, and the Platinum Alchemist, Trinity Glassfille, with them shifting control of her body between each other. Ozpin even compares her newfound situation with his reincarnation, stating that while the two souls will inevitably become one in his case, the three souls in Luna's body shall forever be distinct from each other.
  • Talking to Themself: Subverted in that it's just Luna communicating with Sena and Trinity, whose souls inhabit her body. However, when we see her from outside her POV, it looks like this trope to others since they're unaware of this fact and can't hear the other souls regardless.
  • Trauma Button: Raven Branwen and Goliaths are major ones for Luna. When she saw Yang's resemblance to Raven, she ran away in fear, then later suffered a panic attack and passed out when she saw an image of the bandit leader. In the case of Goliaths, one almost killed her right after she got out of a cave before Jubei saved her, and when faced with another one, she completely froze with terror.

    Carl Clover

Carl Clover

The son of Relius Clover, who hunts for his father alongside his sister, Ada. Circumstances lead to him teaming up with the newly formed Team JNNPR thanks to their common goal.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: In the games, Carl, while rough around the edges, starts out fairly polite. Not so much here, where he's far more confrontational in the beginning.
  • Enemy Mine: Joins with Team JNNPR to track down his father so he can get his revenge and for them to rescue Noel.
  • Good Feels Good: He eventually starts to realize that helping people in need gives him a small feeling of satisfaction, knowing that it was the right thing to do.
  • Jerkass: At first, he clashes with the rest of the group because they often stop to help out the locals with their problems, with him feeling that they're wasting time that's better spent pursuing Relius. However, he's slowly starting to break out of this mindset.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While technically not a member of Team JNNPR, he's this for the group as a whole. Unlike everyone else, who want to try and help whomever they come across, Carl is adamant they ignore the plights of others in favor of pursuing Relius. Though he is slowly moving past this mindset.

    Ada Clover

Ada Clover/Nirvana

The older sister of Carl and the daughter of Relius Clover, who's experiments left her body trapped in an automaton; the Nox Nyctores, Nirvana. Alongside her brother, she hunts her father down to make him pay.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Similar to her mother, she has a pair of razor sharp claws capable of tearing through metal and stone with ease. When Ruby first sees them, she thinks of them as "the sharpest, coolest looking claws [she] had ever seen".
  • Big Sister Instinct: She's highly protective of her younger brother, attacking Penny when she believes her to be targeting him. When an Alpha Beowolf dared to try and kill him, she crushed its head with extreme prejudice.
  • Cool Big Sis: She's this to Carl, displaying a lot of care for him. Likewise, she's among the few people that Carl genuinely cares about.
  • Power Floats: Her body is housed in a powerful Nox Nyctores called Nirvana, and is capable of floating in mid-air. However, as seen in Chapter 76, she doesn't attempt to chase after Penny when the latter began flying during their bout, implying that she's incapable of outright flight like her mother.
  • The Speechless: Played with. While she can speak, only Carl can hear her, which is seen through his POV. So she's this to everyone else when we shift to their POVs.

Other Allies

Vale

Beacon Academy

    Glynda Goodwitch

Glynda Goodwitch

Professor Ozpin's right-hand-woman and a former Sector Seven scientist.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: While her past in the series is unknown, she was a Sector Seven scientist in this story and is carrying a lot of baggage from the group's fallout.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: While Glynda was always intelligent, as befits her position at Beacon, here, she used to be a scientist who worked for Sector Seven.
  • Affectionate Nickname: She's often called "Glyn" by Litchi, her oldest and closest friend from her time in Sector Seven. Qrow and Tai also call her by her initials, "GG".
  • Ambiguously Gay: As seen in flashbacks, when Ironwood flirted with her, she mentally commented that the General wasn't her type by a longshot. Her relationship with Litchi, on the other hand, has many undertones bordering on romantic. However, nothing regarding her feelings is confirmed.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": She's a massive fan of Trinity Glassfille. When she meets her for the first time, she awkwardly tries to ask for her autograph all while trying (and failing) to maintain her usual no-nonsense persona. She quite literally squees after she gets the autograph.
  • Mind over Matter: Her Semblance is Telekinesis, which she can use to control and manipulate anything in her vicinity, turning it into a weapon. It can even be used similar to a Murakumo Unit's Gravity Seed, as seen during her fight with Relius, where she uses it to hold him in place long enough for Valkenhayn to deliver a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown. It's also useful for construction, with her frequently employing it to repair any damage done to Beacon's combat arena and later using it to help with repairing Vale after the fallout of Volume 3.
  • Not So Stoic: She's usually serious, but she has her moments of either levity or humor, such as her hero worship of Trinity Glassfille. Not to mention she acts a lot warmer and less stern whenever she's around Litchi.
  • Rank Up: In the aftermath of the Fall of Vale and Ozpin's death, the surviving Vale Council elects to name her the new Headmistress of Beacon Academy and placed her in charge of the reconstruction effort, effectively making her the city's overall leader for the time being. She discusses this in Chapter 79 with Taiyang and Ruby, feeling she isn't fit for the task after having failed so many.
  • Sci-Fi Bob Haircut: She used to have this hairstyle, as seen both in flashbacks and in an old photo of her and the rest of the Sector Seven Research Team. As for the "sci-fi" part, Sector Seven was a research division for the kingdom of Atlas, which is about as science fiction as the world of Remnant gets.
  • Shrinking Violet: In flashbacks, it's shown that she used to be much shyer and had a hard time dealing with crowds. Quite the far cry from her stern, confident present-day self.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: She's almost always wearing a pair of spectacles and is both Beacon's best instructor on top of being a former Sector Seven scientist.
  • Sour Supporter: Unlike Litchi, she's far more cynical on their chances to cure Roy, but that doesn't stop her from trying to help her friend.

Atlas

Atlas Academy and Military

    General Ironwood

General James Ironwood

The General of the Atlas military and the Headmaster of Atlas Academy.
  • Cyborg: His body has multiple cybernetics, including a neurotransmitter that aids in his use of them.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite his attempts to usurp control of Vytal Festival security from Ozpin, the Headmaster doesn't hold it against him, much to Qrow and Rachel's chagrin.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Referred to as such by Rachel. When he questions if Ozpin believes that the students can win a war, she laughs and points out that he ascended to his position in a time of peace, has never seen actual warfare, and when his kingdom's predecessor (Mantle) fought in the Great War, they lost.
Rachel: General, you would be wise not to assume you have a better understanding of either warfare or this conflict than us. Unlike you, we've seen war. We've fought in war, (gestures to herself) both behind the scenes (gestures to Ozpin) and on the front lines, and unlike your kingdom, we've won wars. So please, do quit while you have some dignity and stop believing yourself to be the smartest man in the room.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: When Ironwood bemoans much of his armies being sent back to Atlas, Qrow tells him off, pointing out that he was allowed by the council to at least keep enough of his troops to maintain Vale's security. Qrow also points out that with his recent attempt to oust Ozpin, he should be grateful that he hasn't been kicked off their inner circle despite Ozpin having good reason to do so.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: While he is on the same side as Ozpin and is just as dedicated to stopping Salem as they are, he's also willing to undermine his allies to put himself into their position of authority if he believes that it'll get the best results. One such example is his meeting with the Vale Council, where he tries to get Ozpin removed from his position as the security head for the Vytal Festival.

    Winter Schnee

Specialist Winter Schnee

Ironwood's second-in-command, Weiss' older sister, and the chosen candidate to become the next Winter Maiden.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: While she's shown to have her compunctions regarding some of Ironwood's actions (such as Fria's treatment and how his growing draconic methods are scaring the people of Atlas), she nonetheless stomachs them and carries on with her duties.
  • Not So Stoic: While normally reserved in regard to her emotions, learning the truth of Remnant's dark history from Ironwood and the fallout of Salem's attack on Vale leaves her rattled.
  • Number Two: She serves as Ironwood's right-hand woman, whom everyone else defers to in the absence of Atlas' primary leader.
  • You Are in Command Now: Briefly, as when Ironwood leaves with his forces for the Vytal Festival, he assigns Winter with his position to run the kingdom of Atlas.

    Arthur Watts

Doctor Arthur Watts

The leading scientific mind of Atlas.
  • Adaptational Heroism: He doesn't work for Salem here thanks to him having the position as the kingdom's lead scientist.
  • Composite Character: As Atlas' leading scientific mind, he takes Pietro's role from canon.
  • Decomposite Character: His canonical role as the evil scientist on Salem's inner circle is taken by Relius Clover.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: While Watts is respected as the top scientific mind of Atlas, he's also heavily derided by almost everyone as an arrogant asshole. Despite Ironwood considering him reliable to get things done, he's pretty open about how much he's annoyed by him and doesn't exactly trust him either.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Despite his work being integral to the Amity Project to reestablish global communications, Ironwood keeps him from knowing about Salem and Terumi. This is due to Watts' massive ego and self-centeredness, both of which make him untrustworthy regarding the truth in Ironwood's eyes, as he's loyal to himself before Atlas.

Mantle

    Robyn Hill

Robyn Hill

The leader of the Happy Huntresses, who rejected the Atlas military to fight for Mantle and its people.
  • Action Politician: Not at first, as she first appears before her campaign for the council seat happens, but by Chapter 80, she's working to become this.
  • Automatic Crossbows: Her primary weapons are a pair of crossbows that can fire various kinds of bolts, first seen during Chapter 67 where she killed multiple Teryxs via explosive shots.
  • The Leader: She leads the Happy Huntresses.
  • Living Lie Detector: Her Semblance allows her to confirm whether someone's lying or not when they shake hands. Mai uses this to show that she and Kagura are sincerely trying to help Mantle in Chapter 80.

    Fiona Thyme

Fiona Thyme

A sheep Faunus and member of the Happy Huntresses.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's the most polite and soft-spoken of the Happy Huntresses, but she proves herself a force to be reckoned with when battling Grimm alongside Tao during Chapters 67 and 70.
  • Hammerspace: Her Semblance allows her to carry things in her own personalized subspace. She mostly uses it to carry large amounts of supplies that can't be moved around normally, such as when she, Robyn, and Tao were taking food and other needed materials to the slums before the Fall of Vale occurred.

    Joanna Greenleaf

Joanna Greenleaf

The tallest of the Happy Huntresses and the team's main muscle.
  • The Big Gal: Of the Happy Huntresses, she's the tallest and physically the strongest as well.
  • Genius Bruiser: Downplayed. She's tough, and while not an outright genius, she's smart enough to serve as Tao's tutor alongside Fiona.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Frequently snarky with her teammates and not one to mince words, but she still cares about all of them.

    May Marigold

May Marigold

A former member of the Marigold family, now protecting Mantle as one of the Happy Huntresses.
  • Mentor in Queerness: She's this for Mai, who, unlike May, hasn't come out as trans due to fear of rejection, with May giving her advice as best as she can.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Downplayed, but as seen in Chapter 80, she really likes scary stories and is bugged by her teammates not enjoying them like she does. Word of God even confirms that she's a horror buff.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: During her days at Atlas Academy, she tried to stand up against bullies who picked on other students, human and Faunus alike. However, she was often prevented from doing so by the instructors, who dismissed her calling it out as "exaggeration". This often led to her being punished by her parents for "embarrassing" them.
  • Trans Tribulations: She went through a lot of this growing up, having to endure her family's abuse until she finally graduated Atlas Academy and made Mantle her new home, where she found a new family in the Happy Huntresses who accepted her identity as a trans woman.
  • White Sheep: To the Marigolds. Unlike her corrupt, bigoted family, she fights to protect others and ditched them to do so.

    Tao Kaka

Tao Kaka

A cat Faunus of the Kaka clan and the newest (and youngest) member of the Happy Huntresses.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Her hoodie has a pair of razor claws at the paws, which can slash Grimm to ribbons as easily as tissue paper.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: She's the youngest of the Happy Huntresses, being around 19 years old, and also the newcomer to the group.
  • Cute Oversized Sleeves: Her jacket includes massive paw-like covers on her sleeves that hide her hands, emphasizing her as the youngest and most adorable of the Happy Huntresses. Within those extensions are razor claws that act as her weapons.
  • Dumb Muscle: Overlaps with Dumb Blonde, as while Tao is incredibly strong and fast, she's also The Ditz, often scoring very poorly on tests to the point where what would still be an F is considered a high mark by her standards.
  • The Nicknamer: Given how she struggles to remember anyone's actual name; she often refers to people by nicknames. To name a few examples, she calls Robyn "Boss Lady", Fiona "Sheep Lady", May "Blue Lady", and Joanna "Green Lady".
  • Super-Speed: In the heat of battle, she blitzes around from place-to-place faster than most can blink. She's openly regarded as the fastest of the Happy Huntresses.

    Litchi Faye-Ling

Litchi Faye-Ling

A doctor working in Mantle and an old friend of Glynda Goodwitch.
  • Composite Character: Her clinic is stationed where Pietro's was in canon, and she also provides prosthetics to those who need them like he did.
  • Determinator: She promised to do everything she could to her friend, and she's damn well determined to keep that promise. Even when face-to-face against a monster like Azrael, she doesn't hesitate to fight tooth and nail to protect Roy.
  • D-Cup Distress: Downplayed, but she does find her large chest to be a bit embarrassing, mostly because it led to Tao giving her the nickname "Boobie Lady".
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Glynda heavily considered several times to try to induct her into Ozpin's inner circle, but always ended up avoiding it because she didn't want a constant reminder of her past at Sector Seven. This results in Glynda having to lie to her regarding why she can't help her with Roy during the Vytal Festival.

Enemies

Salem's Inner Circle

    Salem

Salem

An age old being who seeks to bring about the destruction of the kingdoms as well as Ozpin, being a long-time enemy of the Headmaster.
  • Abusive Parent: She really isn't a good mother to her younger children, mostly by way of being so favoring to her eldest son. As seen in flashbacks in Chapter 75, she punished her youngest son and took his toy away to give to his brother when a fight broke out between the two, despite said brother having instigated the fight in the first place, with the younger only acting in self-defense. Speaking of said elder son, her treatment of his reincarnation, Ragna, is downright deplorable. Despite loving him, she has very few qualms ruining his life to force him to have only her to turn to and locking him away in her castle until he complies with her views.
  • Composite Character: Her status as the mother of Ragna, Jin, and Saya is taken from the fifth Boundary Interface Prime Field Device.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She does love her son, Ragna, and wants him to be at her side. Of course, despite this, she's still a rather terrible mother to him.
  • Hidden Depths: One wouldn't know it from looking at her, but she is talented in construction and is a skilled musician. Word of God states that she learned how to build the elevator of her castle by herself, and even provided the piano piece that plays in it. Of course, when one lives as long as her, it's only natural to find hobbies to pass the time.
  • Implacable Man: Her immortality means that any attempt to try and physically oppose or end her will inevitably fail, with all of Ragna's attempts to kill her in Chapter 72 failing because of it. Reduce her head to paste? She grows it back. Slice her in half? The two halves join back together. Punch her hard enough to snap her neck? She simply readjusts her neck back in place.
  • No-Sell: She can completely ignore the soul draining effects of Ragna's Semblance, much to his shock.
  • Selective Obliviousness: While she did anticipate resistance, she proves unable or unwilling to accept that her son will never join her side. Terumi even calls her out on how she's just deluding herself into believing that Ragna will eventually see things her way.
Salem: He will come around to accept things as they are. In time, he will see that the only path to the freedom he desires is through me.
Terumi: Ah, good old fashion self-delusion. Face it Sal, that brat's too stupid to know when to quit.

    Cinder Fall

Cinder Fall

An ambitious woman who serves as Salem's Maiden and her orchestrator in her plans for Vale.
  • Abusive Parent: Of the Parental Substitute variety. She's a mother-figure to Emerald and is shown to be highly abusive to her. She often subjects her to emotional manipulation and will physically abuse her if she starts defying her control. It's also made clear that Cinder sees Emerald as little more than a tool to meet her ambitions.
  • Hypocrite: In Chapter 52, she berates Neo after the latter has Phantom teleport her back to Beacon, stating that it has the potential to ruin their protection from Rachel. In Chapter 58, Cinder shows no qualms using Phantom to teleport there if she wants to. Neo even bitterly lampshades Cinder's hypocrisy in her thoughts.
  • Playing with Fire: Her most preferred use for her Maiden powers is to manifest massive amounts of flame to incinerate her foes with.
  • The Worf Barrage: In Chapter 29, she fires almost everything she has on Nu-13 during their fight. While Nu appears physically damaged, she doesn't seem the least bit phased and easily undoes all the damage Cinder inflicted in an instant.

    Relius Clover

Doctor Relius Clover

The former head scientist of Sector Seven and the Kingdom of Atlas.
  • Abusive Parent: He's definitely among the worst parents in the entire story, as he experimented on his daughter and forced her into Nirvana, putting her through immense agony and traumatizing both her and Carl, his son. Not to mention that as the creator of the Murakumo Units, he's technically the "father" of Penny, Noel, Lambda, and Nu, all of whom he subjected to mental torment among other horrors.
  • Adaptational Villainy: He's confirmed to have been responsible for Clavis Alucard's death in this story, a crime he never canonically committed, as Clavis died of old age.
  • Archnemesis Dad: He's this to his son and daughter, Carl and Ada, who seek revenge on him for his cruel experiments that turned Ada and Ignis, his wife, into automatons.
  • Composite Character: He created the virus Cinder uploaded into Beacon's main frame, and he also serves as the evil scientist working for Salem, giving him aspects of Arthur Watts' canonical role. Him being Penny's creator also gives him elements of Pietro.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's strong and durable enough to trade blows with Qrow, Valkenhayn, and Glynda simultaneously, not to mention he's shown moving so fast that Noel is unable to keep track of him.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: He was the former head of Sector Seven as well as a fully licensed doctor, but he's also an absolute monster who's experimented on and tortured countless people (including his own family) just to further his research.
  • Not Me This Time: When Terumi compliments him for turning Roy into his new form in Chapter 58, Relius clarifies that, while he modified Roy's form and performed experiments in an effort to reverse engineer the process that mutated him, he actually had nothing to do with the initial transformation.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Despite looking like a man in his forties, he's worked with Salem longer than Terumi, who in turn has worked for Salem for at most close to a century. Combined with him having been the Sage of One and an old enemy of the Alucard family, it's clear he's much older than he appears.
  • Would Hurt a Child: As seen in the memories Noel had of her progenitor, he committed many horrific experiments on Saya, harvesting her DNA and tearing out pieces of her soul to create the Murakumo Units. When Team JNNPR locate one of his sub-labs, they find the decaying skeletal remains of a child inside a test pod.

    Yuuki Terumi

Yuuki Terumi/Hazama Honoka

A mysterious, monstrous man who has a history with Ozpin and his closest allies.
  • Animal Motifs: Snakes. He's sneaky and conniving, his eyes are described as serpentine in appearance, his Ouroboros chain takes the form of an ethereal serpent, and he can manifest snake-like constructs to constrict his foes.
  • At Least I Admit It: He makes no bones about what an awful, repugnant monster he is and relishes in every waking second of it. He even points this out to Adam Taurus as the main difference between them; while Adam actively deludes himself into thinking he's in the right, Terumi doesn't lie about what he is.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: In Chapter 70, Ruby manages to catch him off-guard, shooting him point-blank in the right half of his face and causing him to erupt in a myriad of f-bombs.
Terumi (clutching at the right side of his face): FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCKING! FUCKSHIT FUCK! FUCKING LITTLE BITCH! SHOT MY FUCKING FACE!
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Attempted, but ultimately averted. When he confronts Ruby and reveals himself to her, he's confused why she isn't more hurt by his betrayal since he helped her in the past regarding the White Fang investigation, showing that he wanted to invoke this reaction from her. As Ruby points out, they barely interacted at all and he had several red flags present when they first met, so not only does his "betrayal" lack impact, it also isn't as unexpected to her as he believes.
  • Eyes Always Shut: While in his Hazama identity, his eyes are narrow enough that they seem perpetually closed. When he reveals his true nature to Ruby in Chapter 69, he fully opens them, showing their snake-like appearance.
  • Facial Horror: After Ruby blasts the right half of his face off, it briefly becomes a warping, spasming spectral mass that's trying to mimic a human face. Of course, given his Healing Factor, it repairs itself after a few minutes.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He can certainly make himself come across as polite and charming, but his POV in Chapter 39 shows that it's all just a façade to mask what a sadistic, petty sociopath he really is. Even his superficial attempts at seeming affable don't completely hide his vile nature, as despite Ruby and Noel going along with him when he offers potential evidence on the White Fang, they're both still on-guard and creeped out by him.
  • For the Evulz: He tends to commit acts that are either vile for their own sake or come off as counterproductive to his group's plans for nothing more than a quick laugh at others' misery. One such example is when he tortured Roman and Neo to learn what happened at the docks, except he openly admits that he already knew the full story since he was watching the entire time and tortured them for his own sadistic amusement. To drive it home, the reason he passed along information to Ruby and her group, helping them in their mission against the White Fang and leading to both the take down of the Southeast operation and the prevention of the planned breach of Vale? He just wanted to see the look on Cinder's face when she realized it.
Emerald: So that's it? You screwed over the Southeast operation for a quick laugh!?
Terumi: Yes, and it was hilarious. Thank you for asking.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Despite being a member of Salem's inner circle, he's loathed by pretty much everyone there. The more vile members like Cinder and Tyrian are unable to stomach his presence for very long (it's even noted that their mutual hatred for him is one of the few things they seem to agree upon), and despite Hazel's attempts to be courteous, it's made clear that even he can't stand him either. Of course, with how much of a sadistic asshole he is, Terumi relishes in every moment of being so despised by his "allies" in Salem's group.
  • The Gadfly: He's an utterly sadistic troll that loves saying any insult or demeaning remark he can to annoy or enrage people for his own amusement. Even his allies on Salem's inner circle aren't immune, as he loves screwing with them the most.
  • Hey, You!: Abrasive troll and asshole extraordinaire that he is, it's rare for him to call someone by their actual name. He usually goes for derogatory nicknames either to show how little he thinks of them or to get under their skin. To name a few examples, he calls Cinder "Cindy", Tyrian "Choir Boy", Salem "Old Lady Grimm" or "Sal", and Ruby "Rosebud" or "Rosey".
  • Kick the Dog: His entire fight with Ruby is practically just non-stop dog kicking, as he torments the girl physically and emotionally, mocking her deceased mother whom he claims to have killed and beating her within an inch of her life before gruesomely ripping out her right eye.
  • Jerkass: Bluntly speaking, even outside being one of the story's main villains, Terumi is a colossal prick. He's constantly rude, crude, and obnoxious to everyone, including his allies, all just for his own personal amusement. If there's ever an opportunity to Kick the Dog, he'll gleefully take it without a second thought, best seen in his fight with Ruby, where he gloats about having killed her mom and actively spits on Summer's memory.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: He mocks, berates, and beats the ever-living tar out of Adam Taurus in Chapter 54. It's definitely not undeserved considering how much of a spiteful, ruthless, misanthropic, abusive bastard Adam is.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: He's heavily racist towards Faunus, constantly mocking them as animals to the point where even other racists towards Faunus seem tame by comparison. His downright vicious beatdowns of both Ruby and Neo, coupled with him dropping C-Bombs on the former, also show that he's highly misogynistic.
  • Psycho Knife Nut: He's an utterly depraved murderous monster and he's the only villain whose primary weapons are butterfly knives.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He openly tells Ruby that he's been around for a long time, and his conversation with Salem in Chapter 76 makes it clear that he's been working with her for at most close to a century.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He throws out so many vulgarities that he gives Ragna a run for his money. Aside from the Cluster F-Bomb mentioned above, he's also the first character to drop an uncensored C-Bomb.
  • Villainous Breakdown: During his fight with Ruby, he takes great pleasure in tormenting her mentally and emotionally by taunting her about killing Summer. However, once she actually lands a few good hits on him, he drops his Smug Snake attitude and proceeds to lose his cool.
  • Your Mom: A lot of his insults towards Ruby during their fight involve making fun of her mother, whom he claims to have killed. Cue Unstoppable Rage from Ruby.

    Hazel Rainhart

Hazel Rainhart

A physically imposing, yet cordial man who serves as one of Salem's top enforcers.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Displays this towards Emerald and Mercury, as he moves to protect them from the force given off by the Black Beast awakening in Chapter 76 and, alongside Mercury, attempts to prevent Ragna from attacking Emerald in Chapter 72.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He serves Salem, but he dislikes needless violence and is completely disgusted with the experiments Terumi and Relius did to Nu-13. He's also horrified by the Black Beast's destructive rampages.
  • Third-Party Peacekeeper: He often finds himself playing this role amongst the more violent members of Salem's inner circle, having to keep them from coming to blows. When Tyrian and Cinder were about to get into a fight over the failure to retrieve the contents of the Beacon vault, Hazel steps in and reminds them that there were far more successes than failures, preventing an altercation.

    Tyrian Callows

Tyrian Callows

An insane killer and Salem's most devoted follower, worshipping her as a goddess.
  • Admiring the Abomination: He's absolutely delighted when watching the Black Beast in action, and speaks of its destructive power with complete reverence.
  • Blood Knight: He's positively thrilled to face enemies that can challenge him, as seen in his brief battle with Ragna and how he relished in his opponent's might.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: When his fight with Ragna is halted by Hazel, he starts pouting like a child whose fun was spoiled. Not to mention he generally acts like a kid on a sugar rush who wants to revel in the suffering and misery of others.
  • Scary Scorpions: He's a scorpion Faunus and is an utter psychopath obsessed with destruction.

Cinder's Subordinates

    Emerald Sustrai

Emerald Sustrai

A former street thief who was taken in by Cinder, now serving her, and by extension, Salem's agenda.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: While already the Token Good Teammate of Cinder's subordinates, she's more so here. Her friendship with Luna helps showcase a warmer side to her personality that wasn't nearly as apparent canonically until she defected from Salem's faction. In addition, her Frame-Up against Yang sees her as being regretful and sorry for it, while in the show she was completely without remorse over the act.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • Thanks to Cinder taking her in, Emerald is utterly devoted to her, seeing her as a mother-figure. However, this love and devotion also blinds her from seeing that Cinder genuinely couldn't care less about her if she wanted to and only sees her as a tool at best.
    • On a more positive note, she develops a genuine friendship with Luna, with the two bonding over their similar circumstances as orphans who did what they had to in order to survive. Emerald even goes out of her way to comfort Luna when her Trauma Button is pushed.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • She may work for Cinder, but she's heavily disgusted by just how vile Relius and Terumi are.
    • While she may not be particularly fond of her, she does feel terrible about manipulating Yang after her Frame-Up. Emerald even acknowledges that Yang doesn't deserve what's happening to her.
    • She's an unrepentant thief, but she dislikes the idea of stealing from those younger than her. She only goes through with it because experience has taught her not to be picky with whom she takes things from.
    • When teaming up with Luna to pull pranks on others, she draws the line at pranking the elderly and a mother with her infant child.
  • Master of Illusion: Her Semblance allows her to cast lifelike hallucinations that she's made good use of in her time as a thief. Her first meeting with Luna even has her using her Semblance to steal the girl's coin pouch without her noticing.

    Mercury Black

Mercury Black

An assassin recruited by Cinder to aid her in Salem's plans.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He grew up under an utterly abusive father who subjected him to Training from Hell. It's telling how bad it was that he considers getting beaten to near death by a pissed off Penny to be nowhere near as painful as what Marcus Black put him through.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He may be a remorseless killer, but he's disgusted by Terumi and Relius Clover's experiments, being openly repulsed by what they did to Nu-13.
  • Pet the Dog: When Cinder starts acting more overtly abusive and controlling towards Emerald in Chapter 42, Mercury steps in and tells her to back off.
  • Smug Snake: While certainly a capable threat, he bites off more than he can chew in his fight against Penny the moment she enters her Tranquil Fury. Suddenly, his bravado goes out the window and he's left desperately trying to get away from her.

    Roman Torchwick

Roman Torchwick

A crime lord in Vale under Cinder's employ who was assigned to work with the White Fang in an effort to destabilize Vale.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: In the original series, Roman Torchwick died when he was Eaten Alive by a Grimm. Here, however, he's killed when the Black Beast attacks the prison he was held in and his soul is drained from his body, leaving him a withered husk.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He genuinely cares for Neo, helping patch up her wounds after the battle at the docks and helping put her at ease when she gets scared. When he's captured by Team BRNN and Oobleck, he tells Neo to run for it and focus on saving herself. A major part of the reason he refuses to divulge any information to Ozpin is because doing so would also put her life at risk, given her close proximity to Terumi and Cinder.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When he's being escorted to interrogation, the guard escorting him comments that he isn't all that popular in Ebony Bastion, given the number of Spiders members jeering at him. Roman grumbles that it's a prison and no one's popular with anyone...only to immediately be met by the cheers of his annoying fanbase.

    Neopolitan

Neopolitan

Roman Torchwick's partner in crime and one of Cinder's teammates while undercover at Beacon Academy.
  • Cute and Psycho: She's a Pint-Sized Powerhouse with a major violence streak. Best seen in Chapter 25, when she helps Roman hijack a Dust truck by stabbing its driver to death with a smile on her face. Ragna and Makoto even call her psychotic at a couple points.
  • Designated Victim: She's Terumi's favorite punching bag among Cinder's subordinates. For one reason or another, he seems to just plain despise Neo and relishes in beating her within an inch of her life while he keeps it to harsh mocking with everyone else.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She and Roman are shown to deeply care for one another, with her attempting to rescue him after he's arrested. The only reason she doesn't is because Cinder forces her not to. She's also saddened and enraged by Roman's death and promises to make Cinder, Terumi, and Ragna suffer for their hand in it.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: She may seek revenge for Roman's death, but she understands that she wouldn't stand a chance against those she blames for it, especially considering her circumstances at the time. Instead, she opts to leave Vale and wait for an opportunity to strike.
  • The Speechless: She can't speak and communicates either through body or sign language.

Other Subordinates

    Nu

Nu-13

The thirteenth Murakumo Unit to be created by Terumi and Relius, as well as a clone of Ragna and Jin's sister, Saya.
  • Ax-Crazy: Around Ragna, she becomes a maniacal psychopath prone to deranged laughter and ultraviolence.
  • Deadly Gaze: Thanks to Relius and Terumi's experiments, she has Ruby's right eye and a piece of her soul, granting her the powers of a Silver-Eyed warrior. Her first use of this ability is in Chapter 76, where she incapacitates the Black Beast with it.
  • Emotionless Girl: Her default personality carries no emotion, with her empty tone conveying as such. Whenever around Ragna, however...
  • Gravity Master: During her fight with Cinder in Chapter 29, she employs a Gravity Seed to hold her in place. Cinder barely managed to escape before Nu's next attack made contact.
  • Healing Factor: Her self-repair protocols allow her to patch up lethal amounts of damage in an instant. This is first seen in her fight with Cinder, where the Maiden unleashes everything she has on her, only for Nu to undo her efforts in less than a second.

    Ignis Clover

Ignis Clover

The wife of Relius and the mother of Carl and Ada. Her husband's experiments have left her body trapped in a mechanical vessel known as the Detonator and a slave to his whims.
  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: She has a pair of razor sharp claws that she can spin rapidly to serve as drills. They're also capable of tearing through shipping containers like wet paper and can match Penny's blades in combat.
  • And I Must Scream: It's revealed in Chapter 69 that she's still conscious in her Detonator form, but is unable to enact her own will while Relius controls her, leaving her a prisoner in her own body. Only when her body takes severe damage is she able to briefly assert a sliver of control, but such instances are slim and said control is easily stolen as quickly as she receives it.
  • Broken Faceplate: Happens in Chapter 69, which exposes her human eye and briefly lets her gain some control over herself. Said faceplate returns in Chapter 74, and the data on it that Ada deciphers becomes integral to starting up Team JNNPR's journey to rescue Noel.
  • Domestic Abuse: Very much the victim of this, as her husband experimented on and forced her into a mechanical vessel, stripping her of free will. As revealed in Chapter 69, she's completely conscious and in a constant state of agony because of what Relius did to her. She absolutely loathes her husband for everything he's done, both to herself and others, but she's been rendered powerless to move against him.
  • Flying Brick: She's strong enough to effortlessly crush people to death, demolish buildings, and combat Murakumo Units. In terms of durability, she's withstood all manner of attacks from Team CRDL, Noel, and Penny with little issue, only really suffering damage after a prolonged period of combating the latter two. She's also shown being able to fly fast enough to match and get the drop on Penny.
  • This Is a Drill: She can turn her claws into spinning drills to pierce at her enemies, as seen in her fight with Penny where she uses them to break past her defenses.
  • Trapped in Villainy: Relius stripped her of any free will when he forced her into the Detonator. As revealed after her fight with Penny and Noel, she's very much NOT a willing participant in her husband's atrocities and wants to fight against him, but she's left unable to.

    Azrael

Azrael

A mercenary feared far and wide as "The Mad Dog", known for tearing apart all who stand against him with pure strength alone. He often serves Salem and Terumi, living for the conflict they bring him.
  • Blood Knight: To an absurd degree. Azrael lives for one thing and one thing only: conflict. He seeks to battle powerful opponents, and is all too willing to fight a monster such as the Black Beast just to satisfy his lust for bloodshed.
  • The Dreaded: The dominant reaction to him is fear. Litchi freezes up when she sees him and only regains herself when he goes after Roy, with Glynda having a panic when she learns he was near Vale.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His epitaph as The Mad Dog isn't just for show, and reflects what an Ax-Crazy monster he is.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: He doesn't care for the goals Salem and Terumi have in store for Remnant. All he cares about is satisfying his thirst for violence, and helping them just so happens to coincide with such desires.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He has zero compunctions about beating Litchi within an inch of her life in their fight, and even goes so far as to try and strangle her to death. He would have succeeded if Roy hadn't stopped him.

White Fang

Leadership

    Adam Taurus

Adam Taurus

The leader of the Vale branch of the White Fang and one of it's highest ranked members, as well as the former partner of Blake.
  • An Arm and a Leg: In Chapter 69, he hacks off his own arm to get out of the rubble it was trapped in, all so he could chase after Blake when she was escaping him.
  • Ax-Crazy: He's an insane killer who slaughters even his own subordinates either for daring to leave his control or just to take the edge off when he's pissed.
  • Bait the Dog: At first, it seems as though Makoto's "The Reason You Suck" Speech actually got through to him, only for it to be made clear a second later that it was all an act to get Makoto to let her guard down, allowing Adam to slash her across her stomach.
  • Believing Their Own Lies: Despite all evidence to the contrary, he's completely convinced he's a champion fighting for the Faunus when he's really little more than an insane mass-murderer. Hazama/Terumi even calls him out on how he buys into the crap he spews.
  • Emerging from the Shadows: He does this in the epilogue of Chapter 52 when Cinder asks if he can get the White Fang back in line after Mountain Glenn was thwarted. Terumi even lampshades this, mockingly praising Adam's "performance" as if he was watching a tv show or stage play.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: After his mask gets destroyed by Makoto in Chapter 69, revealing his brand, he lashes out at her and Blake for siding with the humans who caused his suffering. Makoto thoroughly rips apart his sob story in a "The Reason You Suck" Speech that makes it clear his suffering doesn't give him any right to murder innocent people, especially since countless other Faunus have suffered like he has yet never stooped to his depths.
  • Hypocrite: He props himself up as a hero fighting for the superiority of the Faunus race, but Terumi casually points out that for all his grandstanding, he has no qualms with gleefully killing off his own kind, something that naturally flies in the face of his stated goals. Adam also calls Terumi a monster, something Terumi points out he has no right calling anyone considering how much of a psychotic asshole he is.
Terumi: Okay little animal, bit of a pro tip when calling someone a monster. Make sure you're not throwing stones in a glass house.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: When he acts remorseful after his dressing down from Makoto, Blake grows suspicious, as Adam would never admit to being in the wrong and would always find a way to justify his actions to anyone. She sees Adam flash her a Psychotic Smirk and quickly realizes it was a ruse.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: While he's an insane, Ax-Crazy killer, he has enough sense to understand that lashing out in violent rage in front of his own men would weaken his standing within the White Fang, so when Terumi pisses him off, he opts to lure him to a secluded portion of the warehouse in order to kill him.
  • Psycho Ex-Boyfriend: He's this to Blake, having been heavily abusive to her during their time together and tells her that he plans to make her suffer for leaving him.
  • Sore Loser: He promptly loses it after he gets his ass kicked by Terumi/Hazama. He breaks down in tears and punches the floor until he's almost out of strength, and then kills a grunt who walks in on him to vent out his frustrations.

Other Villains

Mistral

    Hades Izanami

Empress Hades Izanami

The ruling empress of Mistral, whom Terumi and Relius answer to.
  • Authority in Name Only: Subverted. As the end of the Great War saw the powers of the kingdom's ruler divided by the council, she should be this and little more than a figurehead. In actuality, it's made clear she has far more control of her kingdom than anyone realizes.
  • Decomposite Character: In BlazBlue, she used Saya's body as a host. Word of God confirms this isn't the case here and that the two are separate characters.
  • Friendly Address Privileges: When she and Pyrrha formally meet, she gives the champion the privilege to refer to her as Hades rather than her royal titles.
  • Unseen No More: Her appearances throughout the first three volumes were rare and always had her hidden behind the curtains of a chrysanthemum throne. The only thing readers and characters saw of her was her silhouette. She makes her first full appearance in Chapter 78, where she has a private conversation with Pyrrha.

Branwen Tribe

    Raven Branwen

Raven Branwen

The biological mother of Yang, twin sister of Qrow, and leader of the Branwen Tribe.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Well, she had this in the past, at least. Qrow recounts times when Raven stood up for him against the tribe's abuse, even when she got the crap kicked out of her in the process. Not so much these days, however, given her abandonment of her family.
  • Broken Pedestal: Becomes this to her daughter, who tried to make excuses for her absence to justify the years she spent looking for answers. To say Yang wasn't happy to learn that her mother ditched the family because she'd rather be a remorseless thief and killer would be an understatement, as she completely abandons her search and decides that she wants nothing to do with her biological mother anymore. Her later talk with Qrow about Raven makes it clear that she now utterly loathes her for everything she did.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Discussed and ultimately averted, with Yang going off on a guilt-fueled rant in Chapter 48 about how she forced herself to believe this trope, only for reality to come crashing in.
Yang: I spent years looking for her. Whenever I got free time from everything, I spent it looking for her. I tried to convince myself she ran away for some good reason. That she ditched our family to go do some deep cover shit or something. Just...just something to justify it all! And you know what happened?
Pyrrha: Yang. You need to calm down no-
Yang: Years later I learn she's just some fucking bandit who kills and robs people! Not someone with a good reason, no, but a fucking monster!
  • Mistaken Identity: When Yang and Pyrrha see her in bird form, they briefly assume her to be the spirit of Summer Rose watching over her children.
  • Parental Abandonment: She abandoned her daughter in infancy to return to the bandit tribe who raised her.
