Heroes

    Billie

Voiced by: Amber May

The main protagonist. An adventurous and headstrong goat, Billie has incredible magic abilities, but is ostracized in her village for her lack of control over them, with only her mother, pet winged fox, and two best friends for company. However, her luck changes one day when an old friend of her long-lost father, Arthur, shows up at her village. Recognizing her face and latent magical abilities, Aristotle requests her help to complete their Gem-collecting mission, and she jumps at the chance to see the world with him.
  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Fittingly for a goat, Billie only wears a collar with a big bell on it. However, she can also wear lots of different outfits, turning her into either a half or mostly-dressed one.
  • Art Evolution: Compared to her earlier official art, Billie's snout became less defined over time, and her color changed from dappled gray to lavender purple. Her legs also changed from Plantigrade (walking flat-footed) to Digitigrade (walking on the ball of the foot), and she eventually gained an Exposed Animal Bellybutton.
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: She has purple fur and Innocent Blue Eyes, both physical characteristics not commonly seen on actual goats.
  • Badass Adorable: A cute little goat who takes on all sorts of nefarious villains.
  • Comically Missing the Point: A Running Gag in the cutscenes has Billie frequently misinterpreting the threats of the bosses as letting her go unharmed.
Fantoccio: You can't possibly be this... DREADFUL! At this rate, you leave me no choice.
Billie: You're... letting me leave? (perks up) Hey, you're not half bad! (walks away) See you never~!
Fantoccio: (blocks her exit with a stage prop) NO! We're tossing the script. And moving on to la grande finition!
  • Double Jump: One of Billie's abilities is to summon a pair of wings that give her a huge jump, and can flap three extra times in mid-air.
  • Feather Fingers: Although she has four hooves like you'd expect, Billie can use her front ones like regular hands with no issue. If you look closely, she seems to use each toe like three fingers; but even so, it doesn't explain how she's able to easily do tricky things like quickly opening her Broom Brolly in mid-air.
  • Flying Broomstick: The game's official cover, as seen in places where the demo can be downloaded, features Billie flying on her Broom Brolly like one. Apparently, Aristotle enchanted it specifically for doing so.
  • Idle Animation: In an interesting twist on these, Billie is stated by her creators to have ADHD, and hers are actually various forms of stimming for her condition.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Billie has big, round and expressive blue eyes, which effectively get her adorable-yet-heroic nature across right off the bat.
  • Invisibility: One of Billie's magical moves is "Invisi-billie-ty", which makes her temporarily invisible to everything that lacks heat vision.
  • Jiggle Physics: Being a goat, Billie's ears are very long and floppy, and frequently seen flapping about, especially when she jumps, and her tail can be seen moving around similarly. The physics are also applied to her belly for comedic effect in Barnaby's introductory cutscene, when the ghostly owl pokes Billie there — complete with an audible boing sound — while she's distracted to startle her.
  • Jumped at the Call: She immediately took up Aristotle's offer to travel the world and learn magic with him.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": A goat named Billie. A billy goat, if you will. The feminine spelling juxtaposed with the term, meaning a male goat specifically, underlines her tomboyish personality. This may or may not have a correlation with her being non-binary.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: Billie is a non-binary goat who uses both she/her and they/them pronouns.
  • Older Than They Look: Although she resembles a kid with her short stature and proportions, high voice and eccentric mannerisms, Billie is actually a young teenager.
  • Parasol of Pain: Billie's main weapon is the Broom Brolly; a magic parasol which she can also use to glide through the air, fly on like a witch's broomstick, protect herself from attacks, or channel magic spells through.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: A perky and tomboyish but good-natured goat with big floppy ears, huge expressive blue eyes and a fluffy tail, who is frequently accompanied by her similarly-adorable pet fox that she dotes over. How could Billie not be one of these?
  • Sweet Sheep: Well, goat specifically, but she's still heroic and adorable nonetheless.
  • We Need a Distraction: One of Billie's abilities is "Magic Decoy", in which she can distract an enemy with a personalized object (for example, some yarn for a cat), though only for a limited time.

    Oscar
Billie's pet winged fox.
  • Fast Tunnelling: One of the moves Oscar can perform is to dig a hole, and instantly form a tunnel between it and up to two other holes dug elsewhere on the level.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Come on! Isn't it obvious that he's an adorable little fox?
  • Stealth Pun: He’s a fox with wings. In other words, a flying fox.
  • Sudden Anatomy: When he needs to run alongside or get to Billie quickly, Oscar can temporarily grow wings and fly short distances.
  • Virtual Pet: This trailer features footage of "Oscar's Petting Game", an in-game activity in which you can play around with Oscar.

    Aristotle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aristotle_bbu.png

Voiced by: Edward Bosco

A wandering traveler, and a friend of Billie's father. Years ago, the two of them embarked on a mission to recover six powerful and magical Gems, including the Purple Gem that he wears on his cloak, but their mission was cut short before they could complete it when Arthur mysteriously vanished. Now, years later, after stumbling upon and rescuing Arthur’s daughter, Billie, in the woods of her hometown, Aristotle offers to teach her how to harness her latent magical abilities while requesting her help in recovering the missing Gems once and for all.

Gem Holders

    Elaine Corso
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elaine_bbu.png

Voiced by: Melissa Medina

Once the well-known and beloved Pirate Queen of Claw Bay, Elaine fell out of favor with her subjects after her longtime partner mysteriously disappeared and rumors spread about her being responsible for it. Cutthroat and imposing, Elaine's heart has hardened over the years since her partner’s disappearance and she now rules Claw Bay with an iron fist. Though Elaine strikes terror in those who dare to oppose her, this hasn’t stopped fortune-seekers from trying and failing to claim her bountiful treasure hoard— which just so happens to include the Green Gem of Alchemy that Billie needs for her quest...
  • Cats Are Mean: A cat who is one of the main antagonists of the game.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: A villainous pirate cat and the queen of her crew.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Elaine may appear cold-hearted, but deep down, she cares for her crewmates as if they were her family.
  • Pirate Girl: She's the captain of her feline pirate crew.
  • Punny Name: Her surname comes from "corsair," another word for pirates.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She threatens to torture and kill Billie, a 13-year old. Whether she was bluffing or serious has yet to be seen.

    Dutch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dutch_bbu.png

Voiced by: Uncle Ali

The charismatic and charming owner of the Razzle Dazzle Dream Hotel, an air-born hotel that boasts dozen of biomes for every luxurious vacation need and desire, Dutch dazzles his guests on the stage and oversees his “family” of employees that ensure the hotel remains in top condition at all times. However, behind closed doors, Dutch has been rumored to have criminal dealings in the magic underworld, which has lead him to acquire the magical Red Gem. Aristotle has spent years trying to recover the Gem from Dutch, but due to the hotel’s intense security measures, he has not only failed every single time, but has no idea what the Red Gem even does…

    Barnaby
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/barnaby_bbu.png

Voiced by: Gabriel C. Brown (AKA Black Gryph0n)

Once a respected and intelligent magical researcher and scientist, Barnaby was caught in the blast of a dangerous magical experiment gone wrong and was tragically and eternally changed as a result. Wielding the Orange Gem of Reality, Barnaby now resides in a pocket dimension of their own making and possesses incredible reality-bending abilities and an army of “Barnaboos” An avid lover of parties, Barnaby hosts an eternal party in this dimension that he is more than eager to welcome Billie into, but the price to get in may be too steep to pay…
  • Adorable Evil Minions: Barnaby's orange ghosts, who join in his Villain Song as the backing chorus (with some getting their own suggestions in) and assist in operating his various deadly traps.
  • Advancing Boss of Doom: His boss level is essentially this, chasing Billie through a long hazardous corridor while controlling many, many dangers and obstacles to claim her life with.
  • Affably Evil: Although he openly hypes up all the ways he could kill Billie in his Villain Song, he's very chipper and cordial about it, and genuinely believes he's doing the right thing so she can come to his party.
  • Animal Species Accent: Being an owl, he tends to extend his "hoo" sounds during his song, not to mention throwing in a few hoos here and there even when he's talking normally.
  • Ax-Crazy: While he is not truly evil and seems to think he's genuinely doing Billie a favor, he still tries to kill living beings unfortunate enough to wander into his "party", and he seems to be more than a little unhinged.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Barnaby may be a goofy ghost who loves to party, but being invited to his eternal party means having to give up your own life... and he's got dozens of ways to provide that particular "service".
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Being a ghost (and a rather insane ghost at that), Barnaby seems to have lost the ability to understand why most people view death as a bad thing, and seems genuinely confused as to why listing all of the horrific ways he can murder Billie isn't selling her on coming to his eternal party.
  • Casting a Shadow: His pitch-black feathers and glowing yellow eyes and mouth give him a shadowy appearance similar to Snatcher, from A Hat in Time.
  • Character Tics: He flaps his wings whenever he's excited.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Barnaby is described as eccentric and nonsensical by the creators, and it's fully shown off in his introductory cutscene. He laughs and shapeshifts a lot as he happily chats to Billie about killing her, and doesn't quite seem to understand personal space, or even just why dying to go to his party is not a good thing for someone who wants to stay alive.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Barnaby's Villain Song consists of him going through dozens of ways to kill Billie, but he's not actually trying to threaten her at all. It's more like he's presenting a restaurant menu for the goat to pick something she likes. It is implied that he genuinely doesn't realize that Billie does not want to die, and instead thinks he simply hasn't found the death that suits her tastes just yet. Towards the end of the song, his voice starts growing more desperate and almost pleading, as if he's running out of options and the "picky" goat is still not satisfied.
    • The bit right before the song happens. He gives Billie several methods of death to choose from (stabbing, strangulation, crushing and poisoning), and she says "none of the above". Though Billie clearly means that she doesn't want to die, Barnaby takes her response literally and interprets it as wanting a different kind of demise.
  • Creepy High-Pitched Voice: Barnaby's voice is particularly high-pitched and eccentric, mixed in with mad laughter not unlike an owl hooting.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: When he offers to stab, strangle, crush or poison Billie so she can join his party, she replies "none of the above", which Barnaby interprets as her saying she wants to die in a different manner, leading to the chase.
  • A Fête Worse than Death: Toys with an inversion. Instead of hosting a party with the purpose of killing, Barnaby tries to kill Billie specifically so he can start said party. Justified in that he isn't intending to harm Billie so much as he's misguidedly trying to help her join a festivity that requires the attendees to be dead.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: Barnaby has several morbid puns for if he kills Billie in particular ways:
Barnaby: (blown up) Going out with a bang, I like it!
Barnaby: (killed by alligators) In a while, crocodile! Hoo hoo!
Barnaby: (flattened by a giant slice of bread) You're toast, now!
  • Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: Wears nothing but a pink waistcoat and bowtie. In life, he also sported a small pair of round glasses.
  • Hates Being Touched: Subverted. Despite Word of God confirming that Barnaby is on the spectrum, he doesn’t mind being touched as his disability would suggest. On the contrary, he enjoys hugs.
  • Have a Nice Death: If Billie dies during his obstacle course, Barnaby casually remarks on it afterward. Depending on how it happens, he'll also sometimes make a snarky pun on it:
Barnaby: Oh, good choice! That'll do nicely~! (chuckles amusedly)
Barnaby: Don't like to leave a mess, do you? I can respect that!
Barnaby: Oh hoo hoo hoo hoo! Party time~!
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: The very first line of his song implies that part of the reason he throws his never-ending party and only invites the dead is to make sure his partygoers become his friends for all eternity.
Barnaby: I know we'll be the best of friends so there's no need to run! The sooner that you’re dead the sooner you can join the fun!
  • Invincible Villain: Not only is he a Reality Warper, making any direct fight with him presumably all but impossible, but he is also long dead. You don't beat him, you just live to tell the tale of having met him. Of course, since Billie failed to steal his gem in his demo, a rematch may be in his future.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Sometimes for his post-death quotes, Barnaby will remark — with evident disappointment — that he didn't get to finish his song.
  • List Song: His Villain Song has him list several ways Billie could get killed, ranging from cruel and unusual — from getting turned into stew and Impaled with Extreme Prejudice, to getting Buried Alive or trampled by elephants — to the more comic and extremely undignified; including getting a cow dropped on her, choking on a grape, or dying from a gluten overdose from eating too much bread.
  • Literal-Minded: He misinterprets Billie's answer of "none of the above" to his question of how she'd like to die as her saying she wants a different death than the ones he listed, as opposed to her saying she didn’t want to die at all.
  • Long Neck: During his boss battle, only his head on an elongated snakelike neck is visible while his body lurks unseen in the darkness.
  • Losing Your Head: His cutscene before the chase shows he can remove his own head from his body and attach it back at any time with no ill effects while he asks about how Billie wants to die.
  • Meaningful Name: Subverted, despite the potential pun within the name, he is actually not a barn owl at all.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Although he is neither capable of mind control nor a victim of it, the multiple concentric circles in his eyes are evocative of this trope, although in his case it's used to highlight his complete insanity.
  • No Listening Skills: He seems to be unable or unwilling to comprehend that Billie doesn’t want to join his party, let alone die to get in.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: He's genderfluid according to Word of God.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Besides openly and casually discussing all the ways he could kill Billie so she can go to his party, Barnaby spends his whole monologue doing the classic Reality Warper schtick of getting right up in her personal space to mock her; including leaning in right over her, picking her up by one leg, and poking her tummy while she's distracted.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Barnaby is stylized to resemble a 2D character in a 3D game which gives him a Living Shadow visual effect.
  • Off with His Head!: He implies he died via decapitation during his song.
Barnaby: I thought I'd try the guillotine!
  • Ominous Owl: A ghostly owl who is one of the villains of the game.
  • Psycho Pink: Wears a pink waistcoat and bow tie, and is very eager to kill Billie to make her a party guest.
  • Reality Warper: As a ghost, he can alter reality around him, shapeshift, summon giant objects at will, and remotely control all the hazards that he tries to kill Billie with. This actually goes to the point that he can visit other universes, as evidenced by an official statement and a few portraits of Barnaby and some other character he's interacting with such as Wally Darling and even the Snatcher.
  • Sapient Eat Sapient: Rather disturbingly, some of Barnaby's suggested methods of killing Billie involve him doing this to her, such as baking her into a cake or turning her into goat meat stew. Look closely when he mentions the latter, and you can see he has a giant cookery book detailing different cuts for the latter.
  • Shadowed Face, Glowing Eyes: His face and body are literally made of darkness. His eyes and beak, on the other hand, are huge and orange.
  • Villain Song: Barnaby's is A Million Gruesome Ways To Die.
  • Verbal Tic: Hooting. He hoots when he laughs and emphasizes the long Os in words.
  • Waistcoat of Style: As goofy and kill-happy as Barnaby is, that's definitely one snazzy waistcoat — complete with a bow tie — he's wearing.
  • Wicked Cultured: One of his suggested deaths involves methods from tragicomedies by William Shakespeare, suggesting he's rather well-read for a ghostly, death-obsessed owl. He'll also sometimes hum a bar from the Marche Funèbre (AKA, the Funeral March) if he successfully kills Billie.

    Fantoccio
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fantoccio_bbu.png

Voiced by: Michael Kovach

Abandoned by his creator, Fantoccio has spent the last 15 years trapped inside of a magical city full of cursed, gloopy citizens. Living in the local theatre and having only his pet shark, Sharkspeare, to keep him company, Fantoccio utilizes the Yellow Gem of Telekinesis to put on grandiose performances and plays and is a true thespian at heart. However, years of isolation have left him desperate for an audience or even someone to talk to, which causes him to immediately hone in on the tiny purple goat that has somehow managed to bypass the city’s forcefield…
  • A Dog Named "Dog": His name is literally the Italian word for "puppet", specifically the masculine form. To English-speakers, it also brings "phantom" and "Pinocchio" to mind.
  • Accidental Murder: His stated (or sung) goal is to turn Billie into his puppet, not kill her. Because of this, if he or any of his animated inanimate objects actually kills her in a Non-Standard Game Over, his emotions will range from annoyed to genuinely distraught. On more than one scenario, he orders her to do another take.
  • Affably Evil: As much as he waxes lyrical about wanting to make Billie his puppet or otherwise threaten her during his boss fight, he seems genuinely distraught if he successfully kills her.
Fantoccio: (legitimately worried) Uh, you're not dead, are you...? Hello...?
  • Air Guitar: During some of his attacks, he will strum the strings he controls as if they were a guitar for him.
  • All Part of the Show: When he isn't crushed about what happens to Billie if she loses to him, Fantoccio calls out stage directions to her (and the player) in an annoyed manner.
Fantoccio: (exasperatedly) No, no, no, no, no! From the top!
Fantoccio: I expected more from you. Again, again!
  • Evil Puppeteer: Despite being a puppet himself, he can still summon magical puppet strings to control his victims. That is just one of the many attacks he throws at you in his boss battle.
  • Gratuitous French: Befitting for a hammy, theatre-loving showman, Fantoccio refers to his boss battle as La Grande Finition note  to Billie when he gets frustrated with her.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His Pre-Alpha Demo fight ends with his stage-destroying attacks causing his theatre to collapse on top of him.
  • Marionette Master: Fantoccio's theme, with his Pre-Alpha boss fight features a giant pair of hands he controls with string, as well as a bunch of mops and some theatre-themed hazards.
  • Perverse Puppet: He's a living marionette puppet that wants Billie to become his personal plaything.
  • Tennis Boss: In the demo, the only time you can damage him is when he fires a magic projectile while taking a break from singing. You have to hit the projectile back at him to knock him down so you can attack him. The first time, Fantoccio is caught off guard by you hitting the projectile back, but the second time, he volleys the projectile a few times.
  • Token Human: Downplayed. As a wooden puppet, he's obviously not a real human, but he is still the most human-looking character revealed so far, with the rest being animals.
  • Villain Song: Fantoccio's is "I've Had Enough Of You".
