     Valt Aoi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valt.PNG
Voiced By: Marina Inoue (Japanese); Sabrina Pitre (English, Burst thru Evolution); Kimlinh Tran (English, Turbo-onwards)

Valt is an outgoing and enthusiastic boy with an equally incredible passion for Beyblade. He hopes to one day become as strong as his best friend, Shu Kurenai, and face him in the National Finals. His Bey is an Attack-type called Victory Valtryek.

  • The Ace: He goes on to become the champion of the International Blader's Cup, and held the title of World Champion for 2 years.
    • Starting from Turbo onwards, Valt is often referred to as the "Legend of Legends" for his blading prowess and his ability to secure wins in the most spectacular ways.
  • Adaptation-Induced Plot Hole: Ultimate Valkyrie's layer shape is based on Valt's very first bey in the Manga, Single Layer Valtryek. The anime starts using Dual Layers directly and makes no implication that the Single Layer Manga is canon to that adaptation, so Valtryek's layer has no explanation for changing its usual shape.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Zac calls him "Little Spark" ("Twinkle Toes" in the dub) and later on, "Little Blaze" ("Itchy-Toes").
  • All-Loving Hero: He's a social butterfly who's willing to make anyone his friend.
  • Anime Hair: Valt has very spiky hair... But it's not naturally spiky. He spikes it himself with a hair band.
  • Back for the Finale: His Winged Launch (Jet Shoot) returns for the final episodes of QuadDrive for the first time since Season 2.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He's somewhat silly, but he has the skills to be a talented blader.
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": Has a V-shaped design on both his shirt and vest.
  • Big Good: After Evolution, Valt is often hailed as the World's Strongest Man and is usually the one that puts up the best fight against the Big Bad of the season. He is also always trying to teach all of those around him to have fun while Beyblading and often tries to lead them on the right path (most notably with Aiger).
  • Blue Is Heroic: His hair is blue, he wears blue, and his Beyblade is blue.
  • Break the Cutie: It happens several times over the course of the show.
  • Break the Haughty: It happens whenever his ego is high.
  • Call-Back:
    • In the dub only, Wonder Valtryek is a reference to his title as the Wonderboy; In Japan, his bey is known as Winning Valkyrie.
    • Valt's launch style (from Turbo to DB) greatly resembles Zac's Solstice Boost from Season 1.
  • Character Development: He learns not to be so cocky and rash over the course of the series. Especially prominent in Turbo.
    • In QuadDrive, he stops relying on giving his bey special abilities since Evolution. Ultimate Valkyrie no longer has mode changes (save for a Quad bey's natural low and high mode), mid-battle transformations, and moving or shifting parts. He also stops running, jumping, or spinning during launch and he even holds the prongs of his launcher with much more finesse unlike his usually tight grip with a fist.
  • Cheerful Child: Usually happy and energetic.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Represents blue.
  • Companion Cube: His bey, Valtryek. While the same could be said for all Bladers, Valt is especially attached to his bey, to the point that he will either shut down if it's lost or go on a rampage if it's stolen.
  • Cool Big Bro: His younger twin siblings, Toko and Nika, think of him as this.
  • Cool Horse: Valtryek's avatar rides a horse.
  • Combo Platter Powers:
    • Savior Valkyrie has abilities of her previous alterations.
      • Victory Valtryek's Awakening (The Bey's rubber blades get stronger the more they are worn down).
      • Genesis Valtryek's Bound Wings and Driver gimmick (As the battle goes on, it changes into a more aggressive mode).
      • Wonder Valtryek's heavyweight part (Instead of the Layer, it's the Driver that is heavier compared to other ones).
      • Sword Valtryek's (occasional) height change.
      • Brave Valtryek's rubber blades.
    • Downplayed for Ultimate Valkyrie. Aesthetically she's the combination of every previous evolution, performance-wise she's only a mix of Single Layer, Victory and Brave Valtryek.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: When using Genesis Valtryek, his strategy involved sending the Bey into the walls to make use of the Spring Loaded Layer. However, when upgraded to Strike Valtryek, that tactic became suicidal, and thus he's shown struggling not to do so in practice.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Subverted. He was this close to defeating Lui in the season 1 finale but lost, he never beat him one on one since then. By season 2, it could no longer be accomplished as Free was the one to break Lui's two-season win streak. He could consistently defeat former Invincible Heroes such as Shu and Free but their win streak was broken long ago.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: You just wanna pick him up and hug him.
  • Demoted to Extra: Starting in Season 3, each season going forward sees a new protagonist, though Valt stays prominent as a legendary blader.
  • Don't Think, Feel: During incredibly difficult battles, Valt tends to enter "The Zone" and create new and powerful techniques from instinct alone. It's performing those same techniques outside of "The Zone" that's the problem.
  • Determinator: See Plucky Boy below.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Because he enjoys Beyblade so much, he tends to rush into team matches without determining a proper order first and ends up putting himself at a heavy disadvantage. When he's losing, he realizes too late that this loss will have actual consequences for the rest of the team. He quickly learned his lesson.
  • Disappeared Dad: Downplayed. His father is revealed to be away on an Arctic expedition. He makes a few cameos in later episodes, and even shows up to cheer Valt on in the season 1 finale.
  • Discard and Draw: Upon having his Beyblade upgraded into Genesis Valtryek, Valt can no longer use the Sprint Boost due to not understanding every aspect of his Beyblade.
  • Dub Name Change: His bey: Valkyrie —> Valtryek
  • The Ditz: Can be rather absentminded at times.
  • Facial Markings: Has a couple of red markings under his left eye.
  • Genius Ditz: Destpite being clueless most of the time, Shu describes Valt as a "beyblading genius" as he was able to go with his instincts on many occasions to defeat certain bladers.
    • In Turbo, the new members of Beigoma Academy describe him as one too (much to Fubuki's chargin).
  • Genki Guy: He's enthusiastic about everything, and there's never a moment when he isn't.
  • Glass Cannon: Overlaps with Fragile Speedster. His Valtryek is an Attack Type that hits hard and moves fast. However, unless it can increase its spin rotation midbattle, it will quickly run out of stamina. Even dodging attacks are a better strategy, though more training allows Valtryek to become a Lightning Bruiser that can keep increasing its speed no matter what.
  • Graceful Loser: As long as he gets to have a fun battle, he doesn't really mind losing. Especially so in the season 1 finale, when he ends up losing to Lui and, despite the latter demanding a do-over (due to Valtryek bursting on its own via a crack in the beystadium), he tells Lui that he deserved that win, and that he'll defeat him for real one day.
  • Heavenly Blue: His Beyblade is an angelic blue.
  • Hero Protagonist: He is the main protagonist of the first two seasons. In season 3, his role is filled by Aiger Akabane.
  • Heroic BSoD: He experiences them very often, especially in episode 29 when he lost Valtryek after crashing into a tree.
  • Heroic Second Wind: The true ability of the Reboot tip, which increases the Bey's speed midway through battle, revitalizing its attacks. However, it can only set up with a strong enough Launch. The Ultimate Reboot tip strengthens the effect.
  • High-Pressure Emotion: Whenever Valt thinks too much, his head puffs out steam.
  • Hot-Blooded: Very, and sometimes it gets him into trouble.
  • Idiot Hero: He tends to act before he thinks. It's one of his more obvious character traits. Thanks to Character Development, he grows out of it.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: In the season 2 finale, he battles against Shu in order to free him from Spryzen Requiem's brainwashing.
  • In-Series Nickname: Is known as "Cinderella Boy" ("Dark Horse" in the English dub) in the Regional tournament.
  • Invincible Hero: Zig-zagged and Justified. While Valt has an excellent tournament record, he also tends to lose practice matches or matches where losing won't disqualify him. Furthermore, every major battle is shown as an obvious uphill climb for Valt, showing that behind each major victory is endless hours of practice.
    • Post-Evolution, it's downplayed. Valt will typcially lose once against the season's protagonist, typically shown as a highlight of their growth, but Valt doesn't make things easy.
  • Kid Hero: He's 11 years old (for the first two seasons) and the series' first main protagonist.
  • The Leader: Of the Beigoma Academy Beyblade Club.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Tends to charge into situations without a plan.
  • Lethal Chef: In episode 28, he attempts to bake some Beyblade bread, but ends up completely carbonizing it instead. Then, he apparently used too much peanut butter in his batch of Napolitan.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Gender-inverted. Valt's cute and lighthearted personality contrasts with Shu's calm and strong personality.
  • Logical Weakness: Turbo Valtryek’s "Turbo Awakening" gimmick makes it immune to Bursts, thus to nullify it, all an opponent must do is attack the Turbo Blades to push them back in, making Valtryek vulnerable again. While the small size of the Blades means that this would require a precise pin-point attack, for World Class Bladers such as Aiger, this feat is more than possible. However, unlike Turbo Spryzen and Turbo Achilles, Turbo Valtryek has the Evolution tip, which wore down during his battle against Aiger, allowing it to accelerate re-awakening the Turbo Awakening state.
  • Magnetic Hero: His kindness and passion for Beyblade is what drew other members to the Beigoma Academy Bey Club in the first place, and is what helped him restore BC Sol to its former glory.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname is Japanese for "blue".
  • The Mentor: In Rise, he becomes one to Dante and Delta at BC Sol. Also becomes this for Rashad during Quad Drive.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Two over the course of Beyblade Burst Evolution:
  • Min-Maxing: The addition of the Genesis Special disables the Spring Layer, which cushioned impacts and allowed for high speed rebounds, thus reducing Valtryek's Burst resistance. In return, however, normal Attacks with the Locked Layer become far stronger than what the Spring Layer could ever hope to achieve.
  • Morality Pet: For Shu, especially after Evolution.
  • Mouthy Kid: He is and always will be a motormouth.
  • Mr. Imagination: Has a pretty big imagination. Take episode 13 and his Imagine Spot about "victory bread" for example.
  • Nice Guy: He can make friends with people as if he's known them for years.
  • No Indoor Voice: Lampshaded by Shu in episode 2
Shu: "Kid's got a set of pipes."
  • Older and Wiser: By season 3, he’s become a lot more serious and mature, though he still retains some of his old enthusiasm.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Any time Valt, who is normally eager to battle anybody, tells someone to forfeit a match, you know he means business.
  • Performance Anxiety: When nervous or put under the spotlight, he freezes up and walks like a wind-up toy.
  • Power Incontinence: The combination of his Beyblading potential, his lack of understanding his bey, the special moves he develops, his opponents, and his emotional state during battles usually affects his victories and losses. This also applies to his bey. Whenever Valtryek improves in some way, Valt has to overcome a learning curve to control it.
    • First is when the Variable Tip "awakened" and drastically sped up. The Rush Launch became sloppy, inconsistent, and wasted power (though it was still powerful) before Valt was able to control it.
    • Second is when Valt's Beyblade was upgraded to Genesis Valtryek, since the Reboot Tip didn't work well with the angles the Variable Tip needed.
    • Third is when Valt discovered the true function of the Reboot Tip, and had trouble with the timing and launch strength it needed.
    • Fourth is when the Genesis Special was first applied, resulting in strategies used previously becoming inapplicable.
    • Fifth is when the Ultimate Reboot Tip was introduced, as it was too fast and sent Genesis Valtryek flying into the walls, which caused self-Bursts. Weaponized, since the Layer without the Chip thrived off of wall collisions, allowing Valt to perform well in the tournament until he could control it properly with the Genesis Special in place.
    • Subverted with the upgrade to Wonder Valtryek, where he can control it just fine.
  • Pint-Sized Kid: Have you seen how tiny he is?! Though he ends up growing a couple of inches in Turbo.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: What he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in blading skills. He sums it up pretty well when participating in tryouts for BC Sol:
Valt: *to his opponent* I may be shorter than you, but I go big in the stadium!
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Lampshaded by Xander:
Xander: "You can always count on Valt for a good laugh!"
  • Power Glows: His Bey and his aura glow blue.
  • Primary-Color Champion: From top to bottom. Subverted in Rise, when he gets a new outfit in secondary colors like orange and green.
  • Recoil Boost: The Winged Launch works off of this principle. Genesis Valtryek takes this further through its spring loaded Layer.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Shu's blue. Inverted with the aura and Bey colors. Later, he becomes the blue to Aiga's red.
  • Revisiting the Roots: A case confined to his character alone. Upon his acquisition of Ultimate Valtryek, his battles follow the same formula of the first season: Rush Launch, Flash Launch and Winged Launch along with the special moves that just attack the opponent really hard.
  • Same Clothes, Different Year: His outfit in the fifth season is almost exactly the same as his outfit in season 1 while his [[ spoiler:season 6 attire]] is practically a carbon copy.
  • Signature Move: Over the series, Valt develops several special moves:
    • The "Rush Launch", where Victory Valtryek banks up and down the stadium slope to rush to the center and barrage the opponent.
    • The "Flash Launch" entails Valtryek rapidly spiraling outwards to force the opponent out of the stadium with multiple blows.
    • The "Ultra Flash Launch", where Valtryek's tip makes contact with the rim of the stadium to instantly speed up and strike the opponent full force.
    • The "Ultra Flash Rush Launch", a combination of the previous moves where the Flash Launch and Ultra Flash Launch are used to weaken the opponent, force them to the center of the stadium, and send Valtryek into a wall so it can bounce off and land back in at an angle, where the momentum is used to power a final Rush Launch.
    • The "Winged Launch", where Victory Valtryek rushes and smashes at the walls of the Bey Stadium to increase its speed and power, with the resulting boost striking the opponent as fast as a Jet. However, this technique burns through Valtryek's stamina faster than any of its other moves...
    • The "Sprint Boost", where Valt takes a few steps back and then runs toward the beystadium, launching his bey.
    • The "Spring Attack", where Genesis Valtryek's Spring Layer tanks an attack using its frame, and uses the recoil with additional speed and power to finish attacking.
  • Significant Birth Date: His birthday is March 21st, as in "3-2-1...LET IT RIP!!"
  • So Last Season: Valt's Winged Launch allowed him to become a Front-Runner in the Japanese Nationals. On the World Stage? Its upgrade, the Spring Winged Launch, is typically the bare minimum needed to make World Level Bladers flinch.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: As shown in episode 45, Valt looks like a younger version of his father.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: The yellow "V" on his shirt means victory and his Beyblade's name is Victory Valtyrek.
  • Technician vs. Performer: The performer to Shu's technician.
  • Terrible Artist: A recurring gag with him is attempting to draw something, and it turns out rather crude.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He LOVES his mother's baking, but his absolute favorite is her Beyblade Bread.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: As Shu points out, Valt and Valtryek are very powerful and have an incredible amount of potential, but Valt's inexperience prevents him from unlocking it.
  • Valkyries: What his Bey, Valtryek, is based off of. Valkyries are female Norse warriors that ride on winged horses to come down and take battle-wounded Vikings to Valhalla.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Rantaro, though Downplayed. They often bicker, but are always there for one another.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Four Times:
    • The first battle against Silas badly damages Victory Valtryek's Layer.
    • Genesis Valtryek's Reboot tip gets destroyed during Valt's first match with Shu's Spryzen Requiem. Thankfully, Raul creates an upgraded replacement.
    • In Turbo, Wonder Valtryek is destroyed during Valt's match with a darkness-infected Aiger Akabane. Fortunately, it's reforged into Turbo Valtryek a couple episodes later.
    • And finally, in QuadDrive, Savior Valkyrie is destroyed after a double Burst Finish against Rashad's Greatest Raphiel after pushing Valkyrie too hard. Next episode he comes back immediately with Ultimate Valkyrie.

Click to see Shu as Red Eye
Voiced By: Jun'ya Enoki (Japanese); Adrian Petriw (English, Burst thru Evolution); Alan Lee (English, Turbo/Surge)

A Beyblading prodigy and a member of the Supreme Four, Shu is renowned throughout Beigoma for his technique, skill, and dedication for hard work. While he may seem a bit aloof and standoffish, he cares deeply for his friends, especially Valt Aoi. He uses the Balance-type Bey, Storm Spryzen.

  • The Ace: In episode one, we're informed that Shu is a beyblading prodigy and a hometown favorite.
    • This is further expanded upon when Shu is revealed to be the Balance Type Supreme Four member, meaning that he's recognized as the strongest Balance Type user in Japan.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Shu's portrayal in the anime is a far cry from his manga counterpart, where he only cared about strength and wasn't even friends with Valt.
  • Adorably Precocious Child: Even at 11 years old, he's a genius.
  • Always Someone Better: He's this to the main cast, who feel they can't catch up to him. In actuality, this is the reason he became Red Eye; after losing to Lui and Free, he wants to be stronger in order to finally defeat them.
  • Badass Longcoat: He wears a long black coat in Turbo.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: He does this in order to prepare himself for his future battles with Lui, Free, and Valt, as well as to gain enough strength to create and control Spryzen Requiem.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Even though he's quiet, he's got incredible beyblading skills.
  • Big Brother Mentor: He may not be Valt's actual brother, but he always guides him on the path of a blader.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Spryzen isn't just a random localized name like Doomscizor or Valtryek. The Cornish translation for "spirits" is Spyrysyon, and Spriggans are part of Cornish folklore.
  • Blood Knight: As Red Eye, he would target anyone who seems like a challenge. It's because he wants stronger battles to eventually battle Lui and Free.
  • Breakout Character: He's the most prominently featured Burst character in the franchise besides Valt, to the point where he's managed to score 1st place in both the 2018 and 2020 Japanese character polls.
  • Broken Ace: Losing to Lui and Free drove him to the point of abandoning his emotions for the sake of victory.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: His experiences in the Snake Pit's Requiem Project and his ever increasing obsession to win end up making Shu actually believe he is Spryzen. He snaps out of it through the shock of losing to Valt in the finale.
  • Character Tic: Whenever he wins a match, he always moves his hair out of his face so we can get a glimpse of his scar.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: As of Turbo he is only 13 years old, yet is the manager of the Raging Bulls .
  • Chick Magnet: He gets the girls cheering for him because he's a genius.
  • Child Prodigy: He's only 11 years old and is a genius.
  • Childhood Friend: He and Valt have known each other since Kindergarten.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Girls cheer his name nearly every match, but he usually tunes them out.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Represents red.
  • The Comically Serious: Shu is one of the more serious characters, but that doesn't mean he can't have some funny moments.
  • Cool Scars: See Good Scars, Evil Scars below.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He's defeated the majority of the bladers with the exception of Silas in a battle, and even defeated Daigo, Valt, and Cuza all at once.
  • Demonic Possession: His desperation for power made it easy for Spryzen Requiem to take him over in episode 38. He gets better, though.
  • Demoted to Extra: Has mostly appeared only in flashbacks in season 3, save for a few occasions. Although, he gets more focus mid-season. He then becomes an Ascended Extra as of season 5 as he has close, personal connections to the Big Bad.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Became the first person to not only burst Lain's Lucifer, but outright win against him (as Lain previously won against Free and Lui, both bladers who defeated Shu in the past as well).
  • Determinator: Will never stop training to improve his skills as a Blader.
    • Deconstructed when said determination drives him to take rather dubious methods to grow stronger after being curb stomped by Free.
  • Does Not Like Spam: According to official sources, he doesn't like coriander.
  • Dragon Slayer: Once it was revealed that Shu also lost to Free, Shu's desire for a new Beyblade resulted in him fighting Luinor and Fafnir, who both happen to be Dragons, in his Battle in the Center of the Mind using Spryzen's halberd.
  • Dub Name Change: His Bey's name is changed from Spriggan to Spryzen in the Dub.
  • Easily Forgiven: His friends all have no hard feelings for his actions as Red Eye, and happily welcome him back in the Evolution season finale.
  • Evil Former Friend: Turned against all of his friends for the sake of power. When Valt finally realizes his identity, Shu pushes him aside and tells him to get away.
  • Evil Costume Switch: After joining the Snake Pit in Evolution, he wears a black and red bodysuit under a white sleeveless tailcoat.
  • Eyes Are Unbreakable: Shu got his scar from Lui aiming Spryzen at his face during their battle in the previous National Tournament, but his scarred eye is still perfectly intact. And, due to this series' target audience, he wasn't seen visibly bleeding from his eye afterwards. The manga, on the other hand...
  • Eye Scream: See above.
  • The Fair Folk: His Bey is based off the Spriggan from Cornish faerie lore.
  • Fatal Flaw: His constant striving to be the best (especially after his fist battle with Lui) led to him isolating himself from and eventually abandoning his friends in order to become stronger. Thankfully, by Turbo he's gotten over this.
  • Foil: To Lui. Both are strong bladers with an intense passion and desire to stand at the top. However, whereas Shu is aloof yet kind, has friends who support him, and admits he is the person he is now because of those friends, Lui is an asocial loner who only cares about himself, views kindness as a sign of weakness, and has no qualms about harming those who get in his way. Ironically enough, Shu started to act more like Lui after becoming Red Eye in season 2.
  • A Friend in Need: He's always there for Valt. One example in particular.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has one on his right eye. It's later revealed during episode 39's flashback that Lui inflicted the scar in their first battle.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: His eyes glow a terrifying blood red when under Spryzen Requiem's mind control. His scar glows as well.
  • Handicapped Badass: Beginning with episode 10, he spends most of the first season recovering from an injured shoulder. He never lets it stop him from beyblading, regardless of what others tell him. He seems to have fully healed by the time of the Individual Tournaments.
  • Harmful Healing: Shu's strategy with Spryzen Requiem in counterclockwise Attack Mode is to give spin to the opponent, so much that the opponent's Beyblade goes out of control and severely damages itself against the stadium walls until they become easy targets for a Requiem Whip.
  • I Hate Past Me: This happens to him twice, both for completely different reasons:
    • His reason for why he became Red Eye was because he saw his past self as weak and has since tried to stray away from every trace of his past, including his friends.
    • After his turnaround, it's quite clear that he regrets his past as Red Eye, leading him to try and help Aiger overcome his darkness.
  • Invincible Villain: In season 2, until Lui finally battled and defeated him, he never lost to anyone.
  • Jack of All Stats: As a Balance Type, Shu's Storm Spryzen is this on paper, but his strategy and skill turns his Beyblade into a Lightning Bruiser.
  • Karma Houdini: Played with. He does apologize for what he did as Red Eye, but doesn't really face any consequences. Justified in that his actions weren't really his fault to begin with.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Once Red Eye enters the picture, the story gets dark. VERY DARK.
  • The Lancer: He's Valt's closest friend and is the deuteragonist of the series.
  • The Leader: Becomes the new manager of the Raging Bulls in Turbo.
  • Lightning Bruiser: The Merge Tip allows it to shift directions and target any Bey within vicinity or dodge attacks from multiple beys, use the increased rotation from the tip to attack hard and Burst beys without any difficulty, and effortlessly tank attacks from even the strongest of Attack types.
  • Light Is Not Good: Unlike the previous Spryzens, the avatar of Spryzen Requiem is clad in white armor, yet its possession of Shu is anything but benevolent.
  • Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: Gender-inverted. Shu's calm nature contrasts with Valt's peppy personality.
  • Logical Weakness: As stated above with Valtryek, Turbo Spryzen’s "Turbo Awakening" gimmick also makes it immune to Bursts. To nullify it, all one must do is push the Turbo Blades back in, making Spryzen vulnerable again.
  • Master of All: What Spryzen Requiem was designed to be. The Bey is capable of Dual Rotation, has rubber on the Layer that allows it to steal spin from opponents of either spin direction (read: anyone), and the Tip has three settings; Attack, Defense and Stamina, and can perform the same feats as the previous Spryzen Beyblades.
  • The Mentor: Acts as one to Valt, and is always there to steer him in the right direction. He also becomes one offscreen to Fubuki Sumiye in Turbo.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: He wears a black mask and is the top Blader of an organization where the members wear masks, hence the name.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname is Japanese for "crimson", a shade of red. His first name also means "top class".
  • My Greatest Failure: His appearance in #35 of Turbo shows that he clearly regrets what he allowed himself to become last season. It's also implied that another reason he became Red Eye was his guilt over breaking his pact with Valt in season 1.
  • Nice Guy: In spite of his aloof attitude, Shu truly is a good, caring person at his core, which makes his transformation into Red Eye all the more tearjerking.
  • One Head Taller: Shu is the same age as Valt but is a head taller than him. Here's proof.
  • Oni: His Beyblade, Storm Spryzen, appears to be based on this. Onis are Japanese yokai typically portrayed as giant, humanoid, ogre/troll-like creatures.
  • Palate Propping: He does this in his Battle in the Center of the Mind in Evolution #36 with Spryzen's halberd to keep Fafnir's avatar from biting down on him.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Even long before the reveal in Evolution #36, it was pretty easy to figure out his true identity from the get-go. Valt even asks him in their first encounter, and the only person to expose the truth was Lui.
  • Power Glows: Both his Bey and aura glow red.
  • Promotion to Opening Titles: While he's in both versions of Evolution Burst, he replaces Silas as the opponent Valt battles in the second version.
  • Rapid Hair Growth: After joining the Snake Pit and becoming Red Eye his hair grows longer rather quickly, considering that season 2 in-universe likely happened over several weeks, if not months. He later cuts it back to its original length at the end of the season finale, only to grow it long again by Turbo.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He wears a pink shirt with a black tie and vest.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Averted. He's heroic, despite having red eyes and black clothing, along with his white hair. Played straight with his Red Eye persona.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted. He's not evil in any shape or form. Played straight as Red Eye, however, who isn't a friendly person at all, and the red lenses of his mask only heighten his threat level in battle.
  • Red Is Heroic: His Beyblade, red eyes, and his glove.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Valt's red. Inverted with their aura and Beyblade colors.
  • Stern Teacher: Shu's shown to be an effective, compassionate leader of the Raging Bulls, given his mentorship of Fubuki and the fact that the Bulls are still a world-class team. The moment Lain tries to buck his authority after being recruited, however, Shu makes it clear that he won't tolerate any disrespect. This contrasts him quite nicely with Valt's mentorship approach, concerning their respective teams.
  • Secret Identity: In season two, it's revealed that he's Red Eye.
  • Signature Move: Over the course of the series, Shu uses several special moves:
    • "Counter Break", where Storm Spryzen utilizes the force of an opponent's attack to make the rubber part of its Unite tip come in contact with the stadium floor, changing its movements to those of an Attack type.
    • "Upper Launch", where Shu launches at an angle, allowing Storm Spryzen to rush up the stadium slope to either send the opponent flying or Burst them.
    • "Ultra Counter Break", where the Unite tip makes contact with the stadium's groove to instantly speed up and strike the opponent full force.
    • Crux Boost, where Shu holds his launcher vertically in his right hand and then rapidly switches to a horizontal launch, giving Spryzen incredible speed and stability, and allowing it to Burst beys effortlessly.
    • Requiem Spin: Shu sets Spryzen Requiem to counterclockwise Stamina Mode to drain away the opponent's spin.
    • Requiem Zone: Shu sets Spryzen Requiem to Defense Mode. Never seen in the anime, but is shown in the video game.
    • Requiem Whip: Shu sets Spryzen Requiem to counterclockwise Attack mode. Typically strong enough to break a part of the opponent's Beyblade.
  • That Man Is Dead: In Evolution #16, he says this nearly word for word during his introduction as Red Eye when asked about his true identity.
"Shu as you know him is gone!"
  • Secret Identity Vocal Shift: As Red Eye, he speaks in a much deeper voice to hide his true identity.
  • The Smart Guy: He is an 11-year-old genius.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He's always serious but not unfriendly. However, he does tend to drop his aloof front when around Valt.
  • Technicolor Eyes: His red eyes.
  • Technician vs. Performer: The technician to Valt's performer.
  • The Quiet One: He's very quiet, especially when compared to Valt.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: After he is brought back to his senses in the Evolution finale, he is no longer obsessed with getting stronger. He even excitedly greets Valt when they reunite at Dread Tower.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Official sources state that his two favorite foods are pasta and arugula.
  • True Companions: He always cares for his friend, Valt.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He betrayed all of his friends (especially Valt) for the sake of power in season 2. Thankfully subverted in the finale.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: Averted. He's a nice guy, if a bit standoffish. Played straight as Red Eye, however, especially after he undergoes the Requiem Project.
  • Walking Spoiler: His identity and actions play a huge part in Evolution.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Storm Spryzen's Layer breaks in two during his battle with Lui due to previous damage caused by the battle with Wakiya that Shu never had time to repair. As Red Eye, he does this to many other Beyblades. Later on, in Episode #47 of Turbo, Phi destroys his Turbo Spryzen. Fortunately, it is fixed in the very next episode.
     Rantaro "Honcho" Kiyama
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rantaro.jpg
Voiced by: Fumihiro Okabayashi (Japanese); Matt Hill (English, Burst thru Evolution); Kevin K. Gomez (English, Surge)

Known as the Head Honcho at Beigoma Academy, Rantaro tries to act like your typical tough guy, but he has a big heart underneath it all and is always there to cheer on those closest to him. He uses the Stamina-type Bey, Raging Roktavor.

  • Absurd Phobia: Unicorns of all things.
  • Ascended Extra: After about three seasons in a row playing the backseat role to the other main characters, Rantaro finally gets a prominent role in Surge as he is the mentor toward the protagonists Hikaru and Hyuga.
  • Badass Cape: See Coat Cape below.
  • Berserk Button: He doesn't like people calling his jacket a cape:
Valt: "Not all of us can pull off wearing a cape to school everyday."
Rantaro: "It's NOT a cape, 'kay?!"
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: As tough as he acts, he's really a big softie underneath it all.
  • The Big Guy: Always tries to act tough, and is the tallest member in the club.
  • The Bus Came Back: After having been gone since Evolution (not counting flashbacks in Turbo), he returns in season 5, Surge.
  • Coat Cape: He wears his jacket on his shoulders, and it never EVER slips off, even in the wind. But again, don't actually call it a cape in front of him.
  • Cool Big Bro: A flashback in Turbo #3 reveals that Rantaro taught Ranjiro how to Beyblade.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Roktavor is designed for pure Stamina with some Defense from its heavy Disk. Unfortunately, this means that any attempt to branch out into other strategies will have only limited success.
  • Dub Name Change: His Bey's name is changed from Ragnaruk to Roktavor in the dub.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's rather sharp-tongued, especially when dealing with Valt's ditziness.
  • Hammerspace: He seems to just pull that large white fan out of thin air. And where does he get all those lollipops and comic books?
  • The Heart: Tied with Valt for being the most compassionate of the Bey Club, and does his best to look out for the rest of the members.
  • Iconic Item: His paper fan.
  • In-Series Nickname: He's called "Honcho" by his closest friends.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He can be condescending, but genuinely cares, and turns into a Nice Guy Deadpan Snarker through Character Development.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname literally means "Yellow Mountain" in Japanese. Quite fitting as his Beyblade, Roktavor, acts like an unmovable mountain and his aura color is yellow.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Obtains (read: Steals) a Knuckle Grip with Weight Dampener attachment from Trad. When used properly, Rantaro's launch speed improves dramatically. However...
    • Power Up Letdown: The Grip is heavy, awkward, and when not used properly, very easily makes Rantaro's mislaunch so bad, he Bursts against a generic blader.
  • Next Tier Power-Up: Berserk Roktavor is a direct upgrade to Raging Roktavor with very similar performance, giving Rantaro a shorter learning curve.
    • Deconstructed. Due to how similar Berserk Roktavor is to its predecessor, there are few, if any, strategies Rantaro can use that he hasn't already explored with Raging Roktavor. As such, Rantaro theoretically has very little room for growth.
  • The Nicknamer: He calls Ken "Mittens", and Wakiya "Goldilocks" in the dub.
    • He's also coined a couple of names for some of his friends' special moves (Sprint Boost for Valt and Flying Double Strike for Daigo)
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Everyone knows his real name, but he is referred to as the "Boss" (Honcho in the English dub) by most of the main characters.
  • Oral Fixation: Always seen with a lollipop in his mouth.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Rantaro is genuinely a strong blader, as shown by his ability to casually curb stomp generic bladers, and his close battle with Ukyo, a blader who was a Nationals Veteran, proves he is at least in the middle tier of the National Level. However, compared to the likes of the Supreme Four, he just can't keep up.
    • In BC Sol, he's usually overshadowed by Free until he leaves for the Raging Bulls as the Stamina-Type specialist. Roktavor focuses on long spin time and high defenses, both of which can be countered with strategic or enough offense. Fafnir on the other hand is a Stamina-Type that can be used offensively and can recover when losing speed.
    • This is also shown in Beyblade Burst Evolution, where he curb stomps every BC Sol hopeful in the qualifiers up until he faces Valt. Furthermore, the fact that the Snake Pit created a copy of his Beyblade and trained one of their members to copy Rantaro's technique to further their research proves that he's well above average, just not enough to stand up to the upper echelons.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: Has one on the bridge of his nose.
  • Playing with Fire: Roktavor's avatar shoots flames from its hands. His next Beyblade, Berserk Roktavor, takes this trope even further.
  • Real Men Eat Meat: He's very...passionate about getting his meat, to the point where he threw a fit when Wakiya swiped an entire plate of kabobs meant for him, leaving him nothing but a single green onion.
  • Signature Move: Rantaro's signature move in season 1 is the Roktavor Zone, where he takes the center of the stadium to preserve his stamina while also using his bey's Revolve tip to increase the centrifugal force, creating a wall of energy that can knock his opponents out.
    • In Evolution, he improves on this to create the Ultra Roktavor Zone, where Roktavor's spin power envails with flames to stabilize stamina and damage the opposing bey.
  • Stone Wall: Being a stamina type, his Roktavor can spin for a while and its special move, Rokatvor Zone, allows it to spin while reducing stamina loss, but it has low attack power and limited mobility as a drawback. Ken calls out Rantaro for only focusing on endurance, and to train to improve beyond its natural abilities.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Upon his rematch with the Snake Pit's Yellow Eye in the team championships, he easily defeats Yellow in a one-round Burst. As of Surge, he is recognized as one of the Legendary Bladers and is considered by others on the leagues of Valt, Free, and Silas (even managing to burst Valtryek).
  • The Worf Effect: Despite going far in most battles and getting through the first few rounds in tournaments, he often loses either to establish the power of a new opponent (Ukyo), or show how much the other characters have grown (Valt, Ken).
  • Worf Had the Flu: Early on in Evolution, Rantaro didn't understand his bey, so he never understood how Berserk Roktavor was able to improve it's rotation and centrifugal force through it's wings.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Valt, though Downplayed. They often get into minor scuffles, but they have each others' backs through and through. He and Wakiya also become this to a larger extent.
  • Younger Than They Look: He looks like a teenager, but is actually 11, just like Valt and Shu.
  • Yellow Lightning, Blue Lightning: He and Valt represent them, regarding their beys' aura colors.
     Kensuke Midorikawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ken_0.jpg
Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga (Japanese); Gabe Khouth (English, Burst & Evolution); Kieran Regan (English; Quadstrike)

Coming from a family of traveling ventriloquists, Ken is very shy and prefers to speak through his two puppets, named Ker and Besu. But don't let his quiet demeanor fool you. Not only is Ken a strong Blader, he's also a very loyal and dependable friend. He wields the Defense-type King Kerbeus.

     Daina Kurogami
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/282350_198932_5.jpg
Voiced by: Ayahi Takagaki (Japanese); Antony Kim (English, eps 1-20); Zach LeBlanc (English, eps 21-onward)

A boy with a knack for predicting his opponents' movements and coming up with incredible strategies, Daigo's edgy demeanor means that he often keeps to himself. But once he joins Valt's group, he becomes one of their most valued allies. He uses the Attack-type Bey, Dark Doomscizor.

  • Berserk Button: After the incident with Yugo, sabotage and deception have since become huge ones for him.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Pulled this on Valt in episode 5, only to change his ways once Valt defeated him.
  • The Comically Serious: Like Shu, he's one of the more serious characters, but he gets in a few comedic moments after befriending Valt, such as a couple of face faults.
  • Cool Big Bro: Towards his little brother, Ryota.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Gave one to Melos Nekota by defeating him with a 5 SECOND Burst Finish.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: How he and Valt eventually become friends.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Non-romantic example. He was initially cold and distant, but starts to warm up after losing to Valt.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He originally acted rude and enjoyed belittling his opponents, but he's just a guy who wants to support his sick brother. This is even more prominent once he joins the Bey Club.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's not as snarky as Honcho, but he has his moments. Bonus points for usually speaking in a deadpan tone.
  • Dual Wielding: Doomscizor's avatar wields two scythes.
  • Dub Name Change: Daina —> Daigo in the English dub.
    • Same for his Bey; Deathscyther —> Doomscizor in season 1; Killer Deathscyther —> Krusher Doomscizor in Evolution.
    • Likewise, his signature move in season 1, Shake Shoot, is called Quake Launch in the dub.
  • Friend to All Living Things: His Japanese character profile for season 2 states that he loves animals.
  • Glass Cannon: His Doomscizor is an attack type like Valtryek and is incredibly fast, strong, and unpredictable. Its stamina isn't so good, though.
  • The Grim Reaper: What his bey, Dark Doomscizor, is based on.
  • The Leader: In season 2, he becomes the captain of AS Gallus, the French representative of the World Beyblade Tournament.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname contains the Japanese prefix, "Kuro-", meaning "dark" or "black".
  • Never Bare Headed: He's always seen wearing a red bandana.
  • Nice Guy: Easily one of the nicest characters in the series, being right up there with Valt.
  • Not So Stoic: Becomes more expressive after joining the Beigoma Beyblade Club.
  • Odd Friendship: Develops one with Clio after the latter joins AS Gallus.
  • Only Sane Man: He's up there with Shu and the twins, as he usually serves as the team's voice of reason.
  • Perky Goth: Mostly dresses in dark clothing, but is actually very kind and fun-loving.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Although he does smile more in later episodes.
  • Purple Is the New Black: He wears purple and black, and his Beyblade is also of the same colors.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His beyblade and aura are dark purple, and he's got the power and skills to back it up.
  • Put on a Bus: Save for flashbacks and a brief cameo in the series finale, he the only member of the original Beigoma Academy Bey Club to never any physical appearance since season 2.
  • Signature Move: His Special Move in season 1 is Quake Launch, a technique where Doomscizor uses its unpredictable movements to either strike the foe or use it as a counter attack.
    • In season 2, he develops two new specials: Hunt Launch, where Doomscizor uses its Hunter tip to attack the opponent at high speeds, and Double Strike, where after making contact with the Bey with the black blade, the sharp edge of the blue blade adds impact to it, causing attacks with literally two scythes; this attack has a high chance of bursting the opponent's bey. It can also be used to attack a Bey when it is above the stadium, or hitting the beystadium and using the recoil as additional attack power.
  • Team Dad: He's always looking out for his teammates, and often breaks up arguments between Honcho and Wakiya.
  • The Smart Guy: Shares this role with Wakiya in the club, being able to analyze and predict his opponents' movements and discover their weaknesses.
  • The Stoic: See Not So Stoic above.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Starts to show his kinder side more often after becoming friends with Valt.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: Wears a variety of skull accessories, including a belt, a necklace, and two skulls on the bead chains attached to his bandana.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Over time, he's gotten more assertive and confident with his Beyblade skills. Blading wise, he's able to defeat Wakiya, defeat Ukyo in a rematch, and nearly forced Gabe into a tie. By season 2, he's become the leader of AS Gallus in the World Beyblade Tournament, and manages to inspire his team. He's also the first blader to drive Joshua on the defensive and nearly beat him.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: In episode 26, he decides to (temporarily) quit beyblading after being overcome with guilt for cheating in his match with Yugo. Fortunately, he gets better.
  • Those Two Guys: Often seen hanging out with Wakiya, prior to joining the Bey Club.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: By episode 6, he joins the Beyblade Club and becomes one of Valt's closest friends.
  • Vocal Evolution: For the first 20 episodes of the English dub, he had a rather deep voice. Beginning with episode 21, his voice is slightly higher (due to Zach LeBlanc taking over voicing him).
     Wakiya Komurasaki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wakiya.jpg
Voiced by: Yuu Kobayashi (Japanese); Cole Howard (English, Burst thru Evolution); Howard Wang (Surge)

A rich student at Beigoma Academy who's regarded by many as one of the strongest bladers, Wakiya is not above taunting his opponents to get under their skin and make them lose focus. But underneath that snooty, arrogant exterior is a heart of gold, as his best friend Hoji Konda can attest to. His Bey is the Defense-type Wild Wyvron.

  • Anti-Hero: See Good is Not Nice below.
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": He has a "W" emblem on his belt buckle.
  • Brutal Honesty: He's quite blunt, so don't expect him to pull any punches when he wants to say what's on his mind.
  • The Bus Came Back: Just like with Rantaro, after about a 2-year absence, he returns in Surge ep.18 as the commissioner of the WBBA.
  • Character Development: While his arrogance and competitive nature never completely disappear, he does become friendlier and more supportive of his friends.
  • Dub Name Change: His surname is shortened to Murasaki in the English dub. His Bey's name is also changed from Wild Wyvern to Wyvron in season 1, and from Tornado Wyvern to Tempest Wyvron in Evolution.
  • Friendless Background: He had trouble making friends before meeting Hoji, since his arrogance and bossiness rubbed people the wrong way.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: After joining the Bey Club, he becomes this. He spends most of his time bossing the others around and trying to call the shots (despite Valt being the team captain), and getting into scuffles with Rantaro. However, they put up with him because he's a valuable asset to the team (Necessity) and because he's friends with Hoji (Proximity).
  • Good is Not Nice: He's one of the protagonists, but that doesn't make him any less abrasive.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: It's not prevalent since he keeps it very well hidden, but him going out to look for Toko and Nika during a downpour is the first sign of his good intentions.
  • Hates Being Touched: Shows shades of this in episode 30 when Valt attempts to hug him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has one in episode 45, after Shu defeats him in the Individual tournament. Fortunately, Hoji manages to snap him out of it.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: He keeps it very well hidden, but when push comes to shove, he's the first one to help out his friends. Especially true when he was the one to bring up the news of Shu going AWOL to Valt and Rantaro.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: They highlight his usually cold and unimpressed demeanor.
  • Improbable Age: He bought and owns a Bey Club in Season 2, despite only being 11.
  • Insufferable Genius: He is strong and intelligent, and he makes sure everyone knows it.
  • It's All About Me: To say that Wakiya has a rather high opinion of himself would be an understatement.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Until his defeat by Zac, the only indications of it were his interactions with Hoji. He eventually mellows out.
  • The Leader: In season 2, he becomes the leader of his own team, Sunbat United.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: With Rantaro. The two bicker almost constantly, but are actually really good friends in the end.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Before he met Hoji. See Friendless Background above.
  • Meaningful Name: See Purple Is Powerful below.
  • Mighty Glacier: His Wyvron is a defense type capable of keeping up with Beys owned by the Supreme Four, but its speed is its weakest aspect, and both his special moves can be beaten by someone outspeeding it, or tricking Wakiya into making a Ring-Out Finish.
  • Next Tier Power-Up: Tempest Wyvron is a direct upgrade to Wild Wyvron with similar performance, giving Wakiya a shorter learning curve.
    • Deconstructed. Due to how similar Tempest Wyvron is to its predecessor, there are few, if any, strategies Wakiya can use that he hasn't already explored with Wild Wyvron. As such, Wakiya theoretically has very little room for growth.
  • No Social Skills: Because the only people he ever interacted with before he met Hoji were his servants who catered to his every whim, Wakiya initially believed that was how friendships worked. Thankfully, Character Development helped him grow out of it.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Views Shu as his #1 rival and trains vigorously everyday so he can beat him. Because of this mentality, he will either ignore and/or underestimate any opponents who aren't Shu.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: His beyblade represents a Wyvern.
  • Pet the Dog: He allows Valt to be the team captain, most likely as thanks for helping him in episode 28.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He dresses in purple, his beyblade and aura are purple, his surname means "purple" in Japanese, and he's a very powerful blader.
  • Pushover Parents: It's heavily implied that his parents rarely (if ever) disciplined him, which contributes to his bratty behavior.
  • Rich Bastard: His family owns an estate in the countryside, and his house is big enough to hold a built-in training facility, but most of the time he's very cocky and condescending towards his peers. Silas leaves his team in season 2 because of it. Later on however, he's seen using his wealth to help his friends.
  • The Smart Guy: Usually comes up with strategies and uses his intelligence to fight against opponents such as Shu, who uses raw talent. Even his Bey is made for a strategic purpose.
  • Signature Move: He has three (later five special moves).
    • The first is Shield Launch, where Wyvron successfully claims the center of the stadium.
    • The second is Shield Crash, where Wyvron takes the opponent's attack and uses the momentum of climbing the stadium's slope to crash head-on with the opponent. This usually ends in a Burst Finish for the bey, but it can act as a double-edged sword if the opposing Bey is fast enough to dodge or counter attack it.
    • The third is Hyper Shield Crash, a stronger version of the Shield Crash where Wyvron is either attacked or goes to the top of the stadium and crashes down with even more force. This usually ends in a Burst or a Ring-Out Finish.
    • The fourth is Tempest Shield, where Wyvron uses its free-spinning layer to fend off strikes.
    • The fifth is Super Tempest Attack, where Wyvron glides along the wall to gain more speed before bouncing off and attacking. Used with the Glaive disc frame removed.
  • Spoiled Brat: Episode 28 sheds some light on his rude behavior; his parents were always busy and left him in the care of his servants, who waited on him hand and foot. Silas even calls him a spoiled brat at one point.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: His usual attire has a Wyvern motif on it.
  • Tsundere: A rare male Type A example. He usually acts like a pompous jerk, but can be caring when he wants to be, if his interactions with Hoji are anything to go by. In season 2, he battles Silas in order to convince him to rejoin BC Sol and help him feel better. Or as he puts it, "to make the European League more interesting".
  • Those Two Guys: Often seen hanging out with Daigo, prior to the latter joining the Bey Club.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Went from a spoiled rich kid who cared only about himself to a Blader who, while still somewhat full of himself, doesn't hesitate to help out his friends when they're in trouble.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: After joining the Bey Club, he becomes this with Rantaro.
  • The Worf Effect: Wakiya doesn't fair well in Beyblade Burst Evolution. His team, Sunbat United, is eliminated from the running in the team championships early on (in an admittedly close match against a team with two members of the Big Five), and he's defeated by Valt and Rantaro while both were still inexperienced with their upgrades while he was fully familiar with his. Furthermore, he's also the only official character that Rantaro defeated without using his new Launcher Grip. This is worsened by the fact that he only has two victories throughout the entire season, once against Rantaro, which was used to demonstrate his new upgrade.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: It's revealed in episode 28 that he's afraid of heights. This pops up again in episode 37 while helping Rantaro retrieve a little girl's balloon from a tree. And in season 2, he's too scared to zipline across a ravine, so Cuza has to push him across.
  • Younger Than They Look: Like Rantaro, he's actually 11, despite looking like a teenager.

Beyblade Teams

    Sword Flames

Kaiza "Xhaka" Xhakuenji (Alexander "Xander" Shakadera)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xander_97.png
Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama (Japanese); Andrew Francis (English, Burst thru Evolution); Austin Lee Matthews (English, Turbo)

The leader of the Sword Flames dojo, Xander has been a practitioner of martial arts since he was young. His large size might make him seem intimidating at first glance, but he's a true Gentle Giant and an old friend of Valt and Shu. He is another member of the Supreme Four, and uses the Attack-type Xeno Xcalius.

  • The Ace: He's the Supreme Four member for Attack Types, and is thus recognized as the best attack type user in Japan. In season 2, he is the 5th best blader in the world rankings, and thus is part of the "Big 5".
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Xander really is a nice guy, but as Evolution #29 shows, he's definitely not someone you want to piss off.
  • Big Brother Mentor: He acts as one to Valt and Shu, and always has their best interests at heart.
  • Big Eater: Toko jokingly mentions they’d have to set up a party of one at their mother’s bakery.
  • Childhood Friend: He was friends with Valt and Shu in kindergarten up until he moved to another school.
  • Cool Sword: His Bey motif is of Excalibur.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Xander's strategy boils down to "Attack. If the attack is not strong enough, lose two clicks to attack harder", and Xcalius' design does not allow for any other strategies. Downplayed, however, as Xcalius' Attack power is so strong that trying to counter it is incredibly difficult.
  • Critical Status Buff: When Xeno Xcalius is close to Bursting, the Layer's contact point and a point on its Disk line up, doubling its attack power and allowing it to use the aptly named "Dual Sabers". Season 2's upgrade Surge Xcalius has the same trait, allowing it to perform "Triple Saber".
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: He's knocked Valt over when trying to give him a fist bump in episode 14 of season one, and accidentally broken both the door to SB Rios' dojo in episode 25 of Evolution (which he strongly implies has happened to him before), and his sword launcher in the same episode.
    • His strength is even more monstrous in the manga, crushing all his launchers from the sheer strength of his launches that he goes through using them like Throw-Away Guns. This immense power ended up smashing Valtryek to bits in a friendly match between him and Valt, leading to Valtryek being rebuilt as Victory Valtryek.
  • Dub Name Change: Xhaka Xhakuenji—> Xander Shakadera in the English dub. His Bey as well: Xeno Xcalibur —> Xeno Xcalius in season 1, and Sieg Xcalibur —> Surge Xcalius in Evolution.
  • Dump Stat: Xeno Xcalius's design maximizes attack by specializing in One Hit Kills, but has critically low stamina.
  • Face of a Thug: He can be quite scary at times, but Xander is probably one of the nicest characters in the Burst series.
  • Gentle Giant: He's 6 feet tall and all muscle, but is really a big teddy bear.
  • Growling Gut: His stomach growls are so loud that Valt and the others initially mistook them for a monster.
  • Healing Hands: Monstrous strength aside, Xander can use therapeutic techniques to help relieve strained muscles.
  • Heroic Build: Thanks to his extensive training in martial arts.
  • The Hyena: There's hardly ever a moment when he isn't seen laughing.
  • Large and in Charge: He towers over most of the main cast, and is the leader of both the Sword Flames and SB Rios.
  • Large Ham: Xander’s extremely bombastic and expresses his fighting spirit through laughter.
  • The Leader: Of the Sword Flames, and later SB Rios in season 2.
  • The Mentor: As shown in a flashback, he became one offscreen to Xavier Bogard.
  • Min-Maxing: Xeno Xcalius has incredible Attack Power, but very poor Stamina in exchange. Surge Xcalius takes this even further by reducing defenses to further increase Attack, to the point where it cannot rebound off a wall and will instead crash into it while sustaining heavy damage. Xander weaponizes this by sending Surge Xcalius into a wall to lose clicks and activate "Triple Saber" if the opponent prevents him from doing so normally.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The Lord of Devastation, though it's subverted in that he's a nice guy.
  • Nice Guy: Though he gives many nightmarish smiles, Xander’s a nice guy who looks out for his friends and has a great sense of humor.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: His first name is Kaiza (Alexander in the dub), but his friends call him "Xhaka" (Xander).
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Xander's normally a pretty easygoing guy and it takes a lot to anger him, but when he actually does get mad, you know you've screwed up big time.
  • Playing with Fire: Not him, but Xcalius' avatar often manifests in a burst of flames.
  • Raised by Grandparents: He lives with his grandfather at the Sword flames dojo.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted. His tall, muscular stature, red eyes, and sharp teeth make him look intimidating, but he's a genuinely good person.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's the leader of the Sword Flames dojo and is quick to praise his friends on their battles, regardless if they win or lose.
  • Signature Move: "Saber Strike", where Xeno Xcalius strikes the opponent with its single contact point; this move is typically strong enough to be a One-Hit Kill. Later, Xander reveals "Dual Sabers", where the contact point increases in mass due to the Disk lining up with the Layer, doubling the power.
    • When upgraded in Season 2 into Surge Xcalius, "Dual Sabers" is now the default attack, with "Triple Saber" becoming what "Dual Sabers" was originally.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Goes from one of the top four bladers in Japan to fifth best in the whole world. He takes it further in the solo world championships, where he defeats Ren Wu (No.4) and Joshua (No. 3) above him.
  • Xtreme Kool Letterz: Xcalius' name is written in this manner.
  • Younger Than They Look: One can be forgiven for mistaking him for a fully grown adult at first glance, but he is actually the same age as Valt and Shu (11 in season one and 13 in season 3).

Yugo Nansui

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/th_8.jpeg
Voiced by: Daichi Hayashi (Japanese); Nick Wolfhard (English)

A loyal member of the Sword Flames and self-appointed right-hand man of Xander, Yugo trains hard to be a Beyblade samurai and won't allow anyone to battle Xander without going through him first. Wields the Stamina-type Bey, Yugen Yegdrion.

  • Adaptational Wimp: He's able to beat stronger bladers in the manga whilst losing a lot of battles in the anime.
  • Berserk Button: He does NOT tolerate cheating, such as when he rightfully scolded Daigo for using an illegal move against him during their battle in episode 23.
  • Counter-Attack: This is Yugo’s signature style. Despite owning a Stamina type, Yugo’s battling style entails waiting for the opponent to reveal their strategy before figuring out its weakness and going in for the kill.
  • Dub Name Change: His Bey, from Yaeger Yggdrasil to Yugen Yegdrion.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He often comes off as aloof and hot-headed, but he's fiercely loyal to his teammates.
  • The Lancer: Xander approves him as his right hand man.
  • Meditation Powerup: Yugo often meditates to focus his energy into countering the opponent's Bey and figuring out its movements.
  • Samurai: He trains himself to become a Beyblade version of this.
  • Pointless Band-Aid: Has one under his left eye.
  • Stone Wall: His Yegdrion is a stamina type that can hold its spin for longer periods thanks to its tip being made of a better gliding material to reduce friction. However, this can also work against it, as the lack of friction makes it difficult to stop if Yegdrion is hit with a strong attack.
  • The Worf Effect: He's a strong blader, but mostly exists to be beaten by the main characters to show how much they've grown, as he has never won against an official character.
  • World Tree: His bey, Yugen Yegdrion, represents Yggdrasil, the Tree of Life from Norse Religion.

Ukyo Ibuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/th_1_70.jpeg
Voiced by: Natsumi Fujiwara (Japanese); Vincent Tong (English)

A relatively new member of Sword Flames, Ukyo has earned himself the nickname "Shadow-Walker" due to his ninja-like stealthiness and tendency to appear and disappear out of thin air. His Bey is the Defense-type Uber Unicrest.

  • Counter-Attack: His Unicrest's special move, Alicorn Launch, acts as one by focusing all of its attack power on a single point.
  • Curtains Match the Window: He has blue hair and blue eyes.
  • Cool Horse: See Unicorn below.
  • Dub Name Change: His Bey, from Unlock Unicorn to Uber Unicrest.
  • Gratuitous Ninja: He may not look like a ninja, but he definitely has the stealthiness of one.
  • Handshake Refusal: He does this in his debut episode when Valt offers to shake hands:
Ukyo: "I hold my launcher with that hand; I prefer not to let future opponents touch it. The hand of a blader is a sacred thing. I accept your handshake in my mind, and I thank you for it."
  • Hidden Depths: He seems to have a knack for fixing skateboards, as seen in episode 29.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Despite being a defense-type, his Unicrest is surprisingly fast and agile, and has a very low center of gravity. Its 9-bladed mane can deflect attacks, and its Alicorn Launch is a powerful counter-attack that pierces the opponent with its sharp horn.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He wears his hair in a long, split ponytail.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: As shown in his introduction, he will often approach others until he's standing close enough to literally step into their shadow.
  • Nice Guy: He's generally polite towards his friends and rivals.
  • The Quiet One: Usually the most soft-spoken of the Sword Flames.
  • Unicorn: What his Beyblade, Uber Unicrest, represents.
  • Underestimating Badassery: According to Xander, Ukyo has a habit of underestimating his opponents. He seems to be cognizant of this, however, based on his reactions whenever it's brought up. By the time of his rematch with Daigo in the team tournament, he seems to have grown out of it.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: His main schtick. It's the main reason for his nickname, the "Shadow-Walker".
  • The Worf Effect: Ukyo was a genuinely strong blader in his debut. However, after losing to Ken, Ukyo hasn't won a single match against an official character since.

    Superstars

Zac "the Sunrise" Kaneguro (Zenkuro Kurogane)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cu_llfpukaamzko.jpg
Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa (Japanese); Bill Newton (English)

A famous pop star who attracts adoration wherever he goes, Zac is the third member of the Supreme Four and loves Beyblading almost much as he loves the spotlight. He shines bright with the Stamina type Zillion Zeutron.

  • The Ace: He's the Supreme Four member for Stamina types and thus, is recognized as the strongest Stamina type user in Japan.
  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": Similar to Wakiya, his belt has a "Z" emblem on it.
  • Chick Magnet: He's got a large amount of fangirls who cheer for him every match.
  • Demoted to Extra: Zac's only appearance in Beyblade Burst Evolution is a cameo as a spectator in the finale, and he's never shown battling, nor is it ever implied that he's playing on the World Stage, despite the existence of the Switch-Strike/God System Galaxy Zeutron in the toy-line.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Zenkuro Kurogane —> Zachary Kaneguro in the English Dub.
    • His Bey as well: Zillion Zeus —> Zeutron.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": As shown in episode 43, he gets annoyed when Akira Yamatoga calls him by his real name, Zachary Kaneguro.
  • Everybody Loves Zeus: His bey is based off of Zeus, and he is a friendly person.
  • Friend to All Children: If his interactions with Toko and Nika are anything to go by, he seems to be quite fond of children. He even gives Nika an autographed CD of his latest album.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He has blonde hair and is very amicable to those he meets, even Wakiya.
  • The Leader: Of Team Superstars.
  • Leitmotif: A very upbeat pop tune plays whenever he makes his entrance.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: See Pretty Boy.
  • The Nicknamer: Calls Valt "Little Spark" (Twinkle-Toes in the English dub) and later, "Little Blaze".
  • Magic Staff: Zeutron's avatar wields a staff as its weapon.
  • Nice Guy: He's kind, modest, devoted to his fans, loves children, and wants to share his passion for Beyblade with everyone around him.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He insists on being called by his idol name "Zac the Sunrise", or simply "Zac". It's revealed toward the end of the series that his real name is Zachary Kaneguro.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: In episodes 24 and 25, he wears a mask to conceal his identity when offstage. The only person it ends up fooling is Valt.
  • Pretty Boy: The girls just can't stop swooning over him.
  • Put on a Bus: Has no roles or appearances besides a cameo in the season 2 finale, and is the only Supreme Four Blader to never appear in Turbo.
  • Something about a Rose: He sometimes carries a single rose with him, and makes his debut in the team tournament via a shower of rose petals.
  • Spectacular Spinning: His two special moves, "Solar Boost" and "Solstice Boost", involve Zac spinning around before launching in order to give Zeutron more momentum.
  • Stone Wall: His Zeutron is a stamina type that can withstand any kind of attack, thanks to centrifugal force created by the moving metal balls in its Energy Layer. Unlike most Stamina types, it also reaches Lightning Bruiser levels since Zeutron's metal balls allow for strong defense and attack at high speeds. He managed to burst Hoji's Horusood with a single strike, and completely neutralized Wakiya's Shield Crash.
  • Vague Age: He's canonically older than Valt and his friends, but his actual age is never said.
  • Verbal Tic: Says "nice" a lot in the Japanese version. It's downplayed in the dub, though.

Orochi Ginba

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/282356_198932.jpg
Voiced by: Takahiro Mizushima (Japanese); Daniel Bacon (English)

Known as "the boy with perfect ears", Orochi has a deep passion for both Beyblade and music. He is known for his ability to know exactly when a Bey is about to burst. He uses the Attack-type Bey, Omni Odax.

    Beasts

Ben Azuki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/316726.jpg
Voiced by: Mariko Higashiuchi (Japanese); David A. Kaye (English)

A hot-tempered Blader with an equally hot-tempered Bey, Ben is the leader of the Beasts who never stops encouraging his teammates to unleash their inner fangs. His Bey is the Attack-type Beast Betromoth.

Kensuke Midorikawa

Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga (Japanese); Gabe Khouth (English)
  • Adaptational Badass: In contrast to his manga counterpart where he was a fairly weak blader, he's a lot stronger in the anime, being able to defeat several strong bladers such as Valt, Ukyo, Yugo, Rantaro and Ben.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Though not as drastic as Shu, Ken was a bit snarkier and more aggressive in the manga.
  • Badass Adorable: He's a skilled blader, and looks adorable while battling.
  • The Bus Came Back: He returns in episode 30 as a member of Team Beasts. He returns again in episode in episode 6 of Quadstrike, five seasons since his last appearance.
  • Cerberus: What his beyblade, King Kerbeus, represents.
  • Character Development: He becomes more confident and learns to speak up more, as well as talking through his puppets less.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Represents green.
  • Companion Cube: His two dog puppets, Keru and Besu.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Both his parents have them, so it may be genetic in his case.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He uses Keru when he wants to say something rude or snarky.
  • Dub Name Change: His named is shortened to Ken Midori in the English dub.
    • His Bey; Kaiser Kerbeus —> King Kerbeus
  • Demoted to Extra: While he returns in Beyblade Burst Evolution, he's never shown battling, nor is it ever implied that he's playing on the World Stage, despite the existence of the Switch-Strike/God System Guardian Kerbeus in the toy-line.
  • Eyepatch of Power: The middle head of Kerbeus' avatar wears a metal eyepatch over its right eye.
  • Friendless Background: Due to his family's career, he's changed schools more times than he can count, which hindered his chances to make friends. This changes once he befriends Valt.
  • Friend to All Children: Given that his family routinely performs puppet shows, it's no surprise he gets along well with younger kids.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: His puppets are a couple of dogs, his Bey represents a three-headed dog, and he's one of the protagonists.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Develops a strong friendship with Daigo's younger brother Ryota. Downplayed in that they're both kids.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: He admits in episode 13 that for a while, he'd convinced himself that he didn't need any friends.
  • Luminescent Blush: Much like Valt, he blushes when embarrassed or flustered.
  • Meaningful Name: His name literally means "Green Canine".
  • Mighty Glacier: His Kerbeus is a defense type, although more training allows Ken to use its defense as an attack, with its Chain Launch being capable of Bursting opponents' Beys. Its sole weakness is that it must reach the stadium's center to use Chain Launch effectively, and as a defense type, it's slow. As shown in his battles with Lui and Shu, a Beyblade with significantly fast, strong attacks can overwhelm Kerbeus.
  • Nice Guy: If you're willing to look past his shyness, you'll find Ken to be a sweet, gentle kid underneath.
  • Performance Anxiety: He tends to second-guess himself when under pressure.
  • Prone to Tears: He's one of the more sensitive members of the group, and cries easily when upset.
  • Put on a Bus: He moves to another school in episode 21, due to his family's career. See The Bus Came Back above. In season 2, he doesn't appear as much as the rest of the Beigoma Bey Club with the exception of Shu until the reveal, and when he does, it's just as a referee for a match.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Like Daigo, he has black hair and pale skin.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Has a pink and green scarf, and his jacket has a pink chain design on the chest. He's also the most sensitive of the Bey Club.
  • The Quiet One: He was this, prior to Character Development.
  • Those Two Guys: After joining Team Beasts, he is often seen hanging out with Ben.
  • Silent Snarker: See Deadpan Snarker above.
  • Shrinking Violet: He eventually grows out of this.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: His coat has a pink circular chain design on it, representing his Beyblade, Kerbeus, and his special move, Chain Launch.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Come episode 20, he manages to score 2 Burst Finishes against both Yugo and Ukyo.
  • Ventriloquism: He often uses his puppets Keru and Besu to tell others how he feels.
  • Younger Than They Look: Like Rantaro and Wakiya, he looks like a teenager, but is actually 11.

    Ice Blaze

Quon Kimidori (Limon)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/th_3.jpeg
Voiced by: Yuka Nishigaki (Japanese); Jonathan Whitesell (English)

An old friend of Xander and former member of Sword Flames, Quon has since left the dojo and started his own team. In contrast to the Hot-Blooded giant, Quon is cool, laidback, and also a talented skateboarder. Wields the Defense-type Bey, Quad Quetziko.

  • But Now I Must Go: Downplayed. He used to be a member of the Sword Flames dojo, but left to go on a training journey. In episode 43, he decides to return to the dojo for good.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Surname change: Kimidori —> Limon in the English dub.
    • His bey: Quad Quetzalcoatl —> Quill Quetziko.
  • Cool Board: He's an avid skater, and he incorporates his boarding skills into his special move, Bound Launch.
  • Feathered Serpent: His beyblade, Quill Quetziko, is based off the Mesoamerican deity, Quetzalcoatl.
  • The Leader: Of Ice Blaze.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Much like Ukyo's Unicrest, Quon's Quetziko is also a Defense-type that is quite agile and utilizes Quon's skateboarding skills in battle. Its defenses are so strong that it's able to give even Xander's Xcalius a run for its money.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname literally means "yellow-green" in Japanese, representing his aura color. Likewise, his dub surname is a combination of the Spanish words for "lemon" and "lime".
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: He gives a small one to the Beigoma Academy Bey Club after witnessing their poor teamwork following their battle, and questions how a team with no trust managed to beat a team with it.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Non-romantic example. He doesn't understand why Xander and Shu see potential in Valt, especially during their 1st battle. This changes after their rematch in episode 43.

    Rideout

Gou Chagake (Gabe Brunai)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image_362.jpg
Voiced by: Yuuki Hayashi (Japanese); Brian Doe (English)

The leader of Team Rideout, Gabe is a cool, calm Blader who both trains hard and always praises his teammates for their efforts, something that often has him clashing with teammate Lui Shirosagi. Uses the Balance-type Giga Gaianon.

  • Counter-Attack: Gabe's Gaianon's special moves are able to counter-attack the opponent, but Gaianon's shifting weight can sometimes work against him.
  • Death or Glory Attack: Some of his attacks can accidentally cause his Bey to Burst, something he's been training to overcome.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Gou Chagake —> Gabe Brunai in the English dub
    • His bey as well: Gigant Gaia —> Giga Gaianon
  • Graceful Loser: He takes his loss against Zac very well, still feeling happy that he even came close to defeating him as well as showing great sportsmanship.
  • Jack of All Stats: His Giga Gaianon is a Balance type that focuses on both Attack and Defense, and because the bey's center of gravity leans more to one side due to the Bey's Quarter disc, Gaianon can attack while defending using its erratic movements. It's also pretty fast, able to keep up with speedy Attack types such as Doomscizor and Odax, and has more stamina than them as well.
  • The Leader: Of Rideout. Just like Valt, he's the leader of a group where a Supreme Four member isn't the leader.
  • Morality Pet: For Lui. He's the only character whom Lui shows any genuine respect for.
  • Nice Guy: He's respectful to his rivals, and treats Lui as a close friend, regardless of the way the latter treats him.
  • Signature Move: His Special Moves are:
    • Swing Launch: Gaianon swings back into the center of the stadium when being attacked to prevent the opposing Bey from taking the center.
    • Swing Counter: Gaianon counters the attack power of its opponent and returns it at full force with unpredictable, shaky movements.

Lui Shirasagijo (Shirosagi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lui_7.jpg
Voiced by: Romi Park (Japanese); Travis Turner (English; Burst thru Evolution); Brandon Winckler (English; Turbo/Surge)

The final member of the Supreme Four and considered the strongest Blader in Japan, Lui is both respected and feared for his insane strength and raw power. Lui is very picky about who he considers worthy enough to battle him and won't hesitate to crush anyone who gets in his way. He wields the Left-spinning Attack-type, Lost Luinor.

  • The Ace: He's the strongest Supreme Four member and has won five consecutive National Bey Tournaments. In season 2, he is the 2nd best blader in the world rankings and thus part of the "Big 5".
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Lui's battle against Red Eye has him as this.
  • Anti-Villain: Lui is this at worst. He's an antagonistic Jerkass, but he has as much of a right to win the tournaments as anyone else, and never takes anything further past Beyblade matches.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: He is the first main antagonist of a season to successfully defeat the main protagonist in the final battle of the season.
  • Beware My Stinger Tail: Luinor's avatar has a speared tail, reminiscent of the eponymous Roman soldier.
  • Big Bad: The closest the first season has to one.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: He's got the thickest brows of all of the characters.
  • Blood Knight: Lui’s only interested in strength and bladers who can rise to his level.
  • Brutal Honesty: Lui doesn't sugarcoat things, especially if you're an opponent who doesn't live up to his standards.
  • The Bus Came Back: He returns in Turbo #4 with a new bey, Brutal Luinor. This is also the first time he's introduced early in a season, as opposed to usually appearing midway.
  • Character Development: In the past, Lui would flatly refuse to battle any opponents he viewed as unworthy. In Turbo, he agrees to battle Aiger right after meeting him (of course, he still curbstomps him).
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Disappears after the Luinor Cup arc and has yet to be seen or mentioned. He finally returns in Surge in episode 12.
  • Critical Status Buff: The closer Nightmare Luinor is to Bursting, the stronger its Dragon Crash Attack becomes. At it's strongest, the technique is capable of Bursting Drain Fafnir.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Dishes these out in nearly every battle he has been in. The only people he has not managed to completely dominate over are Shu, Valt, and Free. However, Lui still triumphed over them in the end.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: In season 2, he becomes the first to defeat Red Eye and later defeats Free in a practice battle (after many draws). Lui ends up on the receiving end during his rematches with both.
  • Dub Name Change: Surname change: Shirasagijo —> Shirosagi in the English dub.
    • Also his bey, Longinus —> Luinor.
  • Expy: The strongest rival of the series, deals out Curbstomp Battles to everyone who fights him, defeated the main character on multiple occasions with the MC only defeating him once, wields a dragon-themed reverse-rotation bey, and is a colossal blood-thirsty jerk. He is a ten-year-old version of Ryuga.
  • Flaming Hair: It usually stands still, but moves whenever Lui is in Blood Knight mode.
  • Graceful Loser: Downplayed. When Lui lost to Free in the semifinals, he was certainly upset, but didn't dispute the result and simply swore to beat him in the finals. Upon losing to Shu in the finals, Lui sees potential to grow stronger from this and simply laughs in anticipation.
  • Honor Before Reason: After he defeats Valt in the season 1 finale (after a crack in the beystadium causes Valtryek to self-destruct), he (initially) demands a do-over, stating that he will not let a freak accident decide his victory.
    • This pops up again in episode 15 of Turbo, as he refused to continue his battle against Aiger after the latter strains his arm, claiming that he doesn't want to take down an injured foe. Ironically, he has injured Shu a couple of times before in the first season, so this is a huge contrast from his earlier characterization due to Character Development.
  • Jerkass: He belittles anyone who isn't a strong blader, doesn't like being cheered on, and scoffs at the concept of acknowledging strength and praising others when they win. Not even Gabe is spared from his bad attitude.
  • The Lancer: He’s not the leader of Rideout, but he doesn’t get along with any others except Gabe, and is quick to call them weaklings whenever they lose.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: See Wrecked Weapon below.
  • Lightning Bruiser: His Lost Luinor is incredibly fast and can match even Valt's Ultra Flash Launch while also being one of the strongest Attack Types, if not the strongest. Defense wise, it has shrugged off attacks from Valtryek, Kerbeus, and 4 other beys at once.
  • Light Is Not Good: He's heavily associated with white and blue, and his surname, Shirosagi, contains the Japanese prefix for "white". However, he's one of the more unpleasant Bladers in the series.
  • Meaningful Name: His surname contains the Japanese prefix, "shiro-", meaning "white". However, "Shiro" can also mean "castle", a reference to how Lui is the undefeated king of Beyblade.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The White Tyrant.
  • Odd Friendship: During Surge, he teams up with Dante Koryu during the Tag Tournament. Obviously due to their differing personalities, he didn't like him at first but grew to respect him more as they fight.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: His Beyblade represents a white Western dragon with a Longinus spear-head tail.
  • Pet the Dog: He at least has some level of respect for Gabe, but even then he still treats him like he does everyone else. He also does gain some respect for Valt at the end of season 1.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He has purple eyes, and his bey, aura, and outfit have purple accents as of Turbo. Blading wise, he's a member of the Supreme Four, the four strongest bladers in Japan, and the Big 5, the five strongest bladers on the planet.
  • The Reveal: Lost Luinor is a reverse rotation bey that is mostly made of metal, which means Lui can Burst anyone in a single blow.
  • Screw Destiny: When Laban tells him his fortune before he faces Aiger, telling him "beware of what's above", and saying it is Lui's destiny, Lui simply laughs at it and declares he will just change that destiny, despite Laban claiming his fortunes are always absolute. During the battle, Aiger surprises Lui with the Z Dive, just as the fortune predicted, but rather than be defeated, Lui has Lúinor knock Z Achilles away, shocking Laban that Lui seemed to actually succeed at changing his destiny.
  • Shadow Archetype: Downplayed. While he is by no means a bad person, he basically represents all of Shu's negative traits: Choosing to focus only on strength and rejecting friendship.
  • Signature Move: His primary technique is the Lost Spiral, where Luinor uses its rotation to create a vortex that can cause a Burst Finish in an instant.
    • He develops the Nightmare Boost during his match against Shu, where he messes with his opponent's psyche and increases Luinor's speed.
    • In season 2, he has Dragon Crash.
    • In season 3, he has Brutal Squall.
    • In season 5, he has Raid Upper.
    • In season 6, he has Guilty Smash.
  • Slasher Smile: Lui starts flashing them whenever he gets serious.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Except for Gabe, no one in Rideout likes Lui because he’s such an arrogant jerk, though he has the battling prowess to mostly justify it.
  • Technician Versus Performer: With Valt whom he competes with as the number one blader in the world.
    • Luinor gains its attack power from the heavy weight in its layer, while Valtryek uses incredible speed which occasionally becomes uncontrollable.
    • Lui's launch style is basic, with his pull strength being the one he trains. Valt develops intricate launches with jumping, running, and spinning.
    • Luinor's upgrades have never changed its fundamental design: A heavy attack-type with good defenses and stamina. Valtryek's has constantly been changing with spring-loaded layers, mid-battle acceleration, burst stoppers, jumping, etc.
  • Technicolor Eyes: His purple eyes.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Goes from the top Blader in Japan to second best in the World and far surpasses those below him in rank. Those who have almost been able to defeat him before (Valt and Shu) find themselves curb stomped with ease now.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Downplayed. He's still a jerk, but his title match against Valt in Turbo is shown to be in purely good spirits. And him saving Hyuga from falling off a mountain in Superking further proves that he's not heartless.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?:
    • He strangely doesn't appear for the final battle between Valt and Shu in the season 2 finale.
    • After Aiger defeats him in the Luinor Cup, he isn't seen again for the rest of Turbo.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Does this by accident to Storm Spryzen. In season 2, Nightmare Luinor ends up on the receiving end by Spryzen Requiem.

    Other Characters

Nika Aoi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nika_aoi.png
Voiced by: Aoi Inase (Japanese); Sabrina Pitre (English; Burst thru Evolution); Jackie Lastra (English; Turbo)

Valt's younger sister, and twin sister to Toko Aoi, Nika is one of Valt's biggest supporters and also has a major crush on Shu.

Tokonatsu Aoi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toko_1.png
Voiced by: Yo Taichi (Japanese); Sabrina Pitre (English; Burst thru Evolution); Dorah Fine (English; Turbo)

Twin brother of Nika and Valt's younger brother, Toko is another one of Valt's cheerleaders and greatly admires his big brother. Two years later, he gets his own Bey, the Stamina-type Spiral Treptune.

  • Big Brother Worship: He and Nika both adore their big brother, Valt.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Has one on the right side of his mouth. Just like his sister, he loses it in season 3.
  • Cheerful Child: He's very cheerful and peppy, just like his sister.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • His name is shortened to Toko in the dub.
    • Also, his bey: Screw Trident —> Spiral Treptune.
  • Little Miss Snarker: A gender-inverted example. Like Nika, he can be rather snarky.
  • Logical Weakness: Spiral Treptune can’t absorb damage if the opponent attacks above his Bey’s Layer.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: He has blue hair while Nika has pink.
  • Signature Move: His bey’s special move, Spiral Counter, deflects the opponent's Attack and counter attacks them from behind.
  • So Last Season: In Turbo, Toko is the owner of Spiral Treptune, making his Bey distinct from the generic bladers. However, it's still a Switch-Strike/God Layer System Beyblade and thus can't stand up to a Turbo Beyblade, though he still fared better than most against Aiger.
  • Stone Wall: Spiral Treptune is a Stamina Type that also has excellent Defense potential due to its rubber parts.
  • Token Mini-Moe: He and Nika are the youngest of the season 1 main cast.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In Turbo, he gains his own unique bey, Spiral Treptune, and is presumably one of the stronger Bladers at Beigoma Academy.

Chiharu Aoi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chiharu_8.jpg
Voiced by: Masumi Asano (Japanese); Kelly Sheridan (English)

  • All There in the Manual: She's never referred to by her first name, only called "Mom" by Valt and the twins.
  • Good Parents: Very loving and supportive of her three children.
  • Missing Mom: Averted. Most of the main protagonists either have no parents on-screen or only have their fathers, (or in Xander's case, his grandfather). Here, she's one of the first Beyblade protagonists' mothers to appear in the anime.
  • Supreme Chef: She owns a bakery, and her Beyblade bread is very popular among the main cast. Extends to later generations too.
  • Wax On, Wax Off: She trains Valt at home by making him do chores that simulate pulling on his launcher string to increase his shoot power.

Hoji Konda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/beyburst_gif___hoji_2_by_kaiza_xhakuenji_db48xo3.png
Voiced by: Tooru Nara (Japanese); Brett Bauer (English)

A Blader whose father works for Wakiya's father, Hoji is a kind and responsible Blader who was instrumental in helping the Wyvron Blader make new friends. Uses the Stamina-type Bey, Hyper Horusood.

  • Blow You Away: His Horusood's special move, Horusood Field, acts as this.
  • Dub Name Change: His Bey, from Holy Horusood to Hyper Horusood.
  • Friendly Rival: Arguably the only rival outside of Shu and Orochi to act this way during the District Tournament.
  • Friend to All Children: Based on the fact that he has several siblings, it's no shock he treats Nika and Toko well.
  • Indentured Servitude: His father works for the company owned by Wakiya's father. The latter asked if his dad had any children who were Wakiya's age, which is how Hoji and Wakiya met.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: He has 4 younger siblings (3 brothers and a sister.)
  • Morality Pet: For Wakiya. He's one of the few characters whom Wakiya openly shows kindness to.
  • Nice Guy: Hoji is friendly, caring, responsible, and generally helpful to everyone. Almost makes you question why he and Wakiya are best friends.
  • Noble Bird of Prey: His beyblade, Hyper Horusood represents the falcon-headed Egyptian god, Horus, and he himself is a pretty noble guy.
  • Only Friend: Heavily implied to be this to Wakiya, before Sasaki and Shindo came along.
  • Sixth Ranger: To the Beyblade Club, unofficially. He trains as their sixth member while getting ready for the National Tournament, and is supportive of the team while acting as the mediator between the rest of the Bey Club and Wakiya's arrogance.
  • Stone Wall: His Horusood is a stamina type, which, despite the type disadvantage, has given even Attack types trouble due to its Special Move, Horusood Field, which surrounds the Bey with a whirlwind that only the strongest beys can break through. Outside of that, however, Horusood has weak attack power, especially once out of the stadium's center, and suffers The Worf Barrage after the tournament because of this.

Principal Hidetaro Shinoda

Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita (Japanese); Richard Newman (English; season 1), Christopher Smith (English; Turbo)

  • All There in the Manual: Like Chiharu, he's never referred to by his first name.
  • Butt-Monkey: Gets put through quite bit of slapstick, especially if it involves Aiger and his training machine.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's considerably older than most of the characters, but treats all of his students well.
  • Non-Giving-Up School Guy: He's usually around to remind his students (especially Valt) to get to their classes.
  • Putting the "Pal" in Principal: He's friendly to his students, and even surprises them with a new double-decker Turbo stadium while also acting as both the referee AND the announcer.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's the principal of Beigoma Academy and gives Valt permission to start a Beyblade club, on the condition he gets five members in order for it to be official.

  • Precocious Crush: Like Nika, she also has a crush on Zac, who is definitely older than her.

Another Blader who, like Zac, is a famous performer. Zac initially sees him as a threat to his status as the #1 pop star, but soon comes to respect him after their Bey battle. Uses the Defense-type, Atlas Anubion.

  • Chick Magnet: Like Shu and Zac, he's got quite a few fangirls who cheer his name.
  • Dub Name Change: Surname change: Yamabuki —> Yamatoga in the English Dub.
    • And his Bey: Acid Anubis —> Atlas Anubion.
  • Mighty Glacier: His Anubion is a Defense-type that, once it takes up the center of the beystadium, becomes extremely difficult to knock over, thanks to its near-perfect stability via the Yell Disc.
  • Mirror Character: Compare his story to Valt's. The two are rookies at Beyblade, have a fun-loving personality, and admire at least one member of the Supreme Four (Shu for Valt and Zac for Akira, respectively). They occasionally get on said Four member's nerves, although the latter respect them as friends and rivals. And both Valt and Akira rose from nobodies to Darkhorses during battles in the National Tournament. The sole difference between the two is that Valt's Bey is an Attack Type while Akira's is a Defense type, and while Valt is a celebrity in his school, Akira is a celebrity as a pop star. That and Akira's not the main protagonist.
  • The Rival: To Zac when he feels his spot as the #1 pop star in the world is being threatened. Fortunately, Zac comes to respect him in the end.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted; he has red eyes like Shu and Xander, but is not evil in any way.
  • Signature Move: His special move is Perfect Circle, where Anubion covers itself with a golden yellow aura, and then uses its near-perfect stability to knock the opposing Bey away.

A mysterious Blader whom Shu faces in the Individual Tournament. Chronically tired and claiming that he has hundreds of guardian spirits at his beck and call, he wields the Stamina-type Bey, Jumbo Jormuntor.

  • Brought to You by the Letter "S": He has a yellow "J" on his hoodie.
  • Dub Name Change: His Bey, from Jail Jormungand to Jumbo Jormuntor.
  • In the Hood: He often has his hood pulled up over his head.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Within seconds of his introduction, he bumps into Valt, attempts to bump into Shu, and gets touchy-feely with Rantaro, claiming that he's found his "friend".
  • The Quiet One: He often speaks in a hushed tone, save for a couple of moments.
  • Red Herring: He was made out to be someone who uses underhanded tactics in battle, but in the end he turns out to be a pretty decent guy, if a little weird.
  • Sleepyhead: Tends to fall asleep at inopportune times, and walks and acts as if he's constantly tired. It's possible that he might have narcolepsy.
  • Stone Wall: One of the best examples in this series. Thanks to the Cycle tip's wings, his Jormuntor can gather friction and energy from the stadium to boost its stamina while maintaining its balance, making it almost impossible to knock over. His Signature Move, Zombie Launch, attacks the opponent with that boost of stamina. Its sole weakness is that it is not strong offensively, but functionally, it works the best out of the first season's Stamina types sans Zac's Zeutron.
  • Verbal Tic: Downplayed, but he often mentions that he has 323 "guardian spirits".

Naoki Minamo

A scientist who takes a more analytical approach to Beyblade, Naoki is all about gathering data in order to come up with winning strategies. He uses the dual-moded Balance-type, Nova Nepstrius.

  • Character Tic: Tugging up his collar or adjusting his glasses.
  • Dub Name Change: Not him, but his Bey: Nova Neptune —> Nepstrius.
  • For Science!: He loves gathering data and conducting experiments. It's more or less his Catchphrase.
  • Friendless Background: The end of episode 42 reveals that he had trouble making friends due to his peers finding his obsession with science weird, mostly because they couldn't understand him.
  • Jack of All Stats: His Nepstrius is a Balance type that can switch between 2 modes (Stamina and Attack), thanks to its Trans tip.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He nearly got Valt disqualified from the Solo Tournament, attempted to sabotage Shu, and then tricked Valt into believing that Jin Aizawa was the cuplrit. He seems to get better, though.
  • Making a Splash: His beyblade, Nova Nepstrius, represents Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.
  • Not Evil, Just Misunderstood: Played with. While he wasn't exactly "evil" to begin with, his manipulative behavior and shady methods gave him a somewhat antagonistic vibe. However, he appears to have a change of heart by the end of episode 42.
  • The Smart Guy: He's a Beyblade scientist.

Referee

Voiced by:???

  • Blind Mistake: Subverted. Whenever two beys score a mutual ring-out and where they landed was obscured by the stadium wall, they will not risk an incorrect verdict leading to the scenario below. His sunglasses also make no impact on his vision and can judge very close calls.
  • Caught on Tape: Occasionally, when the battle is too close to call, they will request playback of the battle's recording to properly judge the outcome.
  • Cool Shades: Never seen with without them
  • Pet the Dog: They're completely neutral and unbiased, but whenever a blader starts acting up, show signs of injury, or collapse exhausted after a battle, he shows immediate concern for their well-being.
