    The Contestants in General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bfdi.png
  • Ambiguous Gender: Most of the recommended characters have an unspecified gender.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: All of the characters (except David and Dora) are anthropomorphic objects.
  • Anthropomorphic Food: Gelatin, Fries, Donut, Cake, Pie, Lollipop, Taco, Eggy, Avocado, Leek, and Onigiri.
  • Anthropomorphic Typography: Four, X and Two, as well as other Algebralians who appear in non-canon shorts.
  • Anyone Can Die: At least one official contestant had died (and received) once, with exceptions of Liy and Stapy).
  • Armless Biped: Avocado, Basketball, Cake, Clapboard, Clock, Discy, Eggy, Fanny, Foldy, Gaty, Golf Ball, Ice Cube, Naily, Nickel, Rocky, Price Tag, Salt Lamp, Snare Drum, Spongy, Tape, Tennis Ball, TV and Winner.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: All of the contestants have shades of this, particularly the female ones.
  • Character Development: Most of them have undergone this, whether they become nicer, meaner, or more cheerful, though there are exceptions.
  • Characterization Marches On: By the time of BFB, many of the contestants of previously debuted in BFDI/BFDIA had their personalities adjusted, exaggerated, or outright altered entirely to better work with the substantially larger cast of characters.
  • Cheerful Child: Yes, most of them have a Vague Age, but a lot of them could qualify as this; for example, most of them have high-pitched voices, and their cheering sound effect sounds very peppy. Also, since the show was created in 2010 when Cary and Michael were in their early teens, most of the contestants on the show are childlike, easily excited, and curious about the world. They also have cheerful, colorful personalities to match.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Pretty much every contestant qualifies as one, but most notably Puffball, Rocky, and Yellow Face. X is this in BFB, but it's extreme with 4, who are almost an Eldritch Abomination in their own right.
  • Color-Coded Characters: While a handful of the cast are multi-colored and varied in their designs, for the most part, everybody in the cast is primarily associated with one color each.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Just about every contestant has their moments of snark.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": Almost all of the characters are named after the objects they resemble (for example, Flower is a flower, Needle is a sewing needle, Bubble is a bubble, etc.), with some notable exceptions being David, Dora, Loser, Winner and the Announcer.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: Due to how large the cast is, each teammate never interacts with some of their teammates, although the teammates do interact with most of the teammates. However, Eraser has never interacted with Stapy or Puffball, despite being on a team twice in a row with the latter.
  • Larynx Dissonance: Several of the female contestants (namely Leafy, Bubble (her voice gets higher later on), Golf Ball, Bottle, Gaty, Saw, Lollipop, Pie, and Basketball in her audition in "The Reveal") have low-pitched voices that would lead some viewers to mistake them for males. Pen even lampshades this in "Lofty": "Golf Ball sounds like a boy, even though she's a girl, and that's just wrong!"
    • Some of the male contestants (namely Lightning and Cake) have high-pitched, feminine voices.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Thanks to the show's eliminations largely being decided by the viewers, generally any contestant's actions that are less than agreeable will be immediately punished in the following episode through their elimination.
  • Living Currency: Coiny and Nickel.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": BFDI had set the standard for some characters on object shows to have "-y" at the end of their self-explanatory name.note
  • Meaningful Name: Most of the contestants live up to their species.
  • No Biological Sex: All of the Algebralians are technically genderless, but Four and X are referred to with both male and gender-neutral pronouns.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: Profily, Winner and Price Tag.
  • Out of Focus: Throughout the first half of BFB, a majority of the cast got very little to no screentime throughout the episodes, with only around four to six usually getting much to do in each of them, in comparison to a total cast size of over ten times that amount! This was fixed by the end of "The Escape from Four", thanks to a majority of the cast leaving the show, leaving only 14 players, who from there on out get substantially more even screentime allotment.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Almost every member of the cast outright leaves BFB halfway into the series in exchange for instead competing on TPOT with Two as the host.
  • Vague Age: Barely any of their ages are known. Only Gelatin is known to be six years old and Golf Ball about one billion, assuming that line in her tips and tricks book wasn't an exaggeration, and Pencil implies she's older than Ice Cube while also being over kid age.
  • Vocal Evolution: Many of the characters' voices have gotten significantly deeper since the start of the show, due to the creators hitting puberty.
    • Bubble's voice started out high pitched and pronouncing many vowels with an "oi" sound. This aspect remained, but it got deeper as early as episode 2. However, starting with "Don't Lose Your Marbles", her voice got higher and more nasal. It got even higher in Season 2. Come BFB, her voice became exaggeratedly high
    • Firey's voice got lower over time, as Coiny's also got lower, but less raspy.
    • Match's voice also got higher again in Season 2.
    • In her first appearance in "Reveal Novum", Ruby had a very high, raspy voice. However, it got much clearer in Season 2.
    • Rocky's voice was fairly high in its first appearance, but when he talked again in "Rescission", his voice somehow got even higher.
    • By the time IDFB was released, Needle became impossible to voice because of her high pitch. Cary had to ask for another voice actor in one of his other videos.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Some of the Recommended Characters who never joined BFDI or BFDIA got redesigns, giving or removing limbs or giving them new body assets. For instance, Nickel has arms in "Reveal Novum" but lost them by BFDIA as Canon Welding with Inanimate Insanity, and Fanny was originally a limbless floating yellow fan but became a blue deskfan with legs by IDFB. Gaty, who was originally brown and a boy but became periwinkle and a girl, references this in "The Worst Day of Black Hole's Life".
