    Seraphita (Adam Kadamon)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angel_sanctuary_adam_kadamon.png

Adam Kadamon is the Holy Hermit, God's greatest creation of a perfect, genderless body that has control over magic of light and darkness, as well as the lost magic of time.

He initially appears to heal Setsuna's wounds, and mention the imminent apocalypse. When Sara dies and Setsuna causes the apocalypse, Adam Kadamon used his power to stop time shortly before the apocalypse began, to give Setsuna a chance to save the world.

Adam Kadamon gives Setsuna the task to reach the top of Heaven and find him, asking Setsuna to please free him from his prison there. Otherwise, the rest of his power will fade, time will unfreeze on earth, and its destruction will take place, after all.

  • Dead Man Writing: Upon being sealed away for good, a final message of Adam Kadamon's gets played across all of Heaven. He narrates that he believes all of them to have the strength and possibility to make a better world.
  • Eye Scream: His right eye was removed and is the root of the Tree of Knowledge.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Adam Kadamon's body has been cut up into pieces, with his right eye used as the root of the Tree of Knowledge, and his head locked into a giant egg, with fetal angels feeding off of him.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: All colored depictions of him use these colors.
  • Healing Factor: Can heal others wounds, as shown in his first appearance, when he healed Setsuna's ripped-off arm.
  • Hermaphrodite: Represents all opposites, which extends to physically being both sexes.
  • Light Is Good: Setsuna always mentions what a warm, comforting light Adam Kadamon gives off when appearing, and he works to give humanity a chance to survive, as well as healing injuries.
  • Mother of a Thousand Young: Despite being genderless, Adam Kadamon is referred to as being the mother of all angel.
  • Not Himself: After Lucifer destroys God's humanoid avatar in Ethemenanki, Adam Kadamon frees himself and thanks Setsuna for fulfilling his duty, but Setsuna is suspicious because he cannot feel the gentle aura that he usually gets from his presence. Just as Michael and Uriel arrive to warn Setsuna that Adam Kadamon is insane, the apparition turns out to be God posing as Adam Kadamon — the impostor promptly attacks Rosiel, knocking the heart crystal out of him, and then retreats to His control room with Sara as His captive.
  • Time Master: The first and original creation that can control the lost magic of time. Adam Kadamon is also the one to suspend earth's time after Sara's death.

    Alexiel
Voiced by: Ai Orikasa (Japanese), Suzy Prue (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/as_alexiel.png

Alexiel is the organic angel and twin of Rosiel. Aeons ago, she rebelled against God and fought in the Great War alongside demons, planning to overthrow the hierarchy of Heaven. She sealed Rosiel away, but ended up injured and captured.

She was put to trial for her actions and her sentence was decided. Her body and soul were to be separated, with her soul reincarnating again and again, but always into a life full of misery, agony, and ending in a slow, very painful death at an early age.

Her latest reincarnation was Setsuna Mudo, whom she tries to protect because she knows that he's the messiah that the world has needed.

  • All-Loving Heroine: Beneath her cold exterior, Alexial is a compassionate, loving person who doesn't hold grudges towards anyone, not even her own brother, forgives all and sees demons as equals.
  • Attempted Rape: Her initial meeting with Lucifel. He originally planned to rape and then murder her as a way to get back at God, but when he saw her true personality, he had a change of heart.
  • Bargain with Heaven: Struck a bargain with YHVH for Rosiel's survival. YHVH would keep Rosiel alive, if Alexiel would agree to never show any compassion towards her twin brother. She agreed out of love for her brother, and chose to lock herself into Eden to keep herself imprisoned.
  • Big Good: Considered the messiah and the pillar of the demonic army during the Great War. She herself doesn't think of herself as anyone good, as she was incapable of fulfilling her promise of killing Rosiel, and works hard to keep Setsuna alive and protect him. She even hopes that he'll do what she couldn't with Rosiel, but Alexiel is the only match for him.
  • Crystal Prison: Her body is encased in Angel Crystal, the physical manifestation of the fifth element, and held in the Empty Corridor. Angel Crystal is the only substance capable of holding her.
  • Curse: Was branded as a Fallen after her trial, and her body and soul were forcefully separated, leading to her soul being reincarnated into human lives. And those lives shall always be difficult, ending in brutal, agonizing deaths. The curse begins to get broken as the spirit from Alexiel's sword, Nanatsusaya, interferes and gives Alexiel's current incarnation a mercy kill before the pre-destined death.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Claims her heart to be cold and emotionless, leading to her being blunt and uncaring in all matters. When she meets the demons, and particularly Kurai, her heart began to thaw and she ended up regaining feelings of compassion and love. This was why, when she encountered Rosiel, she was incapable of killing him as she had promised, and merely imprisoned him.
  • Emotionless Girl: Rarely shows emotions. Purposefully killed them off, to make it easier for her to not show compassion to Rosiel, as part of her deal with God.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Gets reincarnated like most angels, but she was cursed to have all of her reincarnated lives to be filled with nothing but misery and pain, and always ending at a young age by an agonizing, slow death.
  • Go into the Light: Alexiel holds the mortally injured Kato and opens the path to the netherworld for him, telling him to believe in the light he sees and trust in his own strength. She ends up purging Rosiel's cells from him.
  • Healing Factor: Can heal anything, and even regrow parts of her body, but she cannot heal the Fallen mark on her chest or the calluses on her hands from wielding Nanatsusaya.
  • Honey Trap: Seduces Kira in an attempt to make him lower his guard, so that she can kill him because she knows that he's close to awakening as Lucifer, becoming Setsuna's worst enemy. She fails, though given her relationship with Lucifer, it's unclear how serious she was with the attempt.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Was naked when residing in the Garden of Eden.
  • Last of Her Kind: Defied, as she and Rosiel are twins. She eventually confesses that she couldn't get herself to kill Rosiel, too afraid of being the last of her kind, and out of love for him. This was why she ended up imprisoning Rosiel in Assiah, instead of killing him as she originally promised.
  • Mark of Shame: The Fallen mark on her chest, given for leading demons into Heaven in her revolt against God.
  • Reincarnation: As part of her curse, Alexiel gets reincarnated as a human and will have a life full of misery, and always dying at a young age, with an agonizing and brutal death awaiting her. All of her reincarnations have her facial features and, when she takes over the current incarnation's body, her spirit is recognizable by her piercing, blue eyes.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She is extremely attractive and has a beautiful figure, and her body often gets a lot of focus.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Comes across as cold and aloof, partly caused by her isolation in Eden. When she left Eden, and especially upon meeting demons like Kurai and getting to know them, Alexiel became a lot more emotional.
  • Time Master: As one of the twins split-cloned from Adam Kadamon, Alexiel inherited the ability to use time magic from her mother. Alexiel cannot use her own powers in Eden, not as long as the Tree of Knowledge prospers, so she uses her time magic to stop time for Setsuna's body when he got mortally wounded by Lucifer.
  • The Unfavorite: Was unloved by God and claimed to have revolted against Heaven to force him to show her the love and attention He gives to Rosiel. Given what God is actually like, it's clear that He cares for neither twin, and enjoyed playing them against each other.

    Rosiel
Voiced by: Susumu Chiba (Japanese), Crispin Freeman (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/as_rosiel.png

Rosiel is the inorganic angel and twin to Alexiel. He's favored by God over his twin sister and knows that this bothered Alexiel, leading to her revolting against God. During the Great War, his confrontation with Alexiel resulted in her sealing him away in Assiah.

Katan ends up removing the seal on Rosiel, so that he can fix the corruption in the higher Hierarchy in Heaven. But Rosiel cares little for that, obsessed with his sister and her current reincarnation, Setsuna Mudo. He wants Setsuna to suffer and eventually kill him, so that Alexiel will be forced to awaken.

  • Admiring the Abomination: Drawn to the strangest of beings. The first time he creates one of his golems, which take the form of dozens of electric cables molded into a human-like shape, he gushes about how cute it is. He even spends time musing over Sandalphon's physical body.
  • Appendage Assimilation: Grafted all of Alexiel's body parts onto himself over time, covering up his original form. Each of her removed body parts regrew, considering her healing powers.
  • Assimilation Backfire: Absorbing Sandalphon gave Rosiel the former's abilities and power, but Sandalphon's consciousness took a while to get assimilated. And the stronger Rosiel becomes, the more his body destablizes. Once Rosiel absorbed Sandalphon, his body began to deteriorate at a faster rate than previously.
  • The Assimilator: Has the ability to absorb and assimilate objects. After killing and absorbing Sara's friend, Ruri, he was able to impersonate her. He tried to do the same with Sara, but since he was interrupted and couldn't complete it, he was capable of physically impersonating her, but not convincingly pass as her.
  • Ax-Crazy: Commits mass slaughter multiple times, all to keep people from keeping his sister away from him.
  • Became Their Own Anti Thesis: Flashbacks depicting Rosiel before his unsealing portray him as being a much more composed and sane person, one who even playfully teases a young Katan. He even asked Alexiel to kill him if his insanity ever became too great. Comparing him to how he's portrayed during the present of the series, it's clear that his growing powers and insanity had completely warped him.
  • Big Bad: His desire to have Alexiel awaken and return to him drives much of the plot, with several events being kickstarted by him to make Setsuna suffer. He believes that making Setsuna miserable enough will force Alexiel to awaken.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Alexiel has been doing this to him. God told Alexiel that He would save Rosiel's life, if Alexiel agreed to never show any compassion towards him. Even when Rosiel begged Alexiel to acknowledge him in any way, even with just a disdainful look, she continued to ignore him, making him believe that she actually hated and was disgusted by him, just like everyone else.
  • The Chessmaster: Has a good mind for strategy and constantly constructs intricate plans to get what he wants, along with being a very charismatic person. He's a good judge of character and knows what to say to gain loyalty that reaches disturbing levels from people. And when he gets bored, he occasionally sets up conflicts for personal amusement.
  • Combat Tentacles: Has electric cables emerging from the base of his wings and is very dexterous with them, using them to strangle, stab, whip, restrain, and throw anything he wants.
  • Curse: Alexiel sealed him in Assiah during the time of the Great War. She imprisoned him there, instead of killing him as he once asked her to do. Katan undoes the seal using Tokyo's magnetic field and human sacrifices.
  • Dream Weaver: Delights in tormenting Metatron and Sevothtarte through their dreams.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: Cradles Alexiel's soulless body when stealing her from the ogres, kissing her.
  • Fate Worse than Death: God planned to emotionally abuse Rosiel, torturing and letting him become insane, until he couldn't take it anymore. He planned to let Rosiel become an Angel of Destruction that would annihilate the world that caused him so much pain, despite having loved that world, too.
  • The Glomp: Tackles Katan into a desperate hug when he fully synchronized to Rosiel, demanding Katan to keep calling him 'beautiful' and promise to never leave him.
  • Healing Factor: Has the ability to heal his wounds, but in a different way than Alexiel. His natural healing ability involved him slowly de-aging from an abominational form to that of an old geezer, until he was finally able to walk on his own.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Started out as nothing but 'a clump of flesh and cables that just barely resembled a human form'. His inorganic healing abilities and transplanting of Alexiel's body parts onto him gave him a more conventionally human form.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: Has unnatural healing abilities as the inorganic angel and is unable to kill himself or be killed by most other things. He asked Alexiel to kill him before he ended up losing his mind completely, thinking that she would be able to because of their opposite beings.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Considers Katan to be the only pure and good thing he has ever created, and has an obsession with him that almost rivals his obsession with Alexiel. Rosiel killing Katan turns out to be the catalyst that drives Rosiel completely over the edge, ready to destroy anything and everything, because he lost the one thing he treasured the most.
  • Mercy Kill: Asked Alexiel to kill him before he completely lost his mind.
  • Merlin Sickness: Gains a more youthful appearance as time goes by, with flashbacks showing him to have previously looked the same age that Alexiel appears to be — physically looking to be in their mid-to-late twenties, and looking just barely older than the teenaged Setsuna when he was unsealed. But his younger appearance indicates his growing powers and increasing insanity, leading to his behavior becoming more erratic. Upon assimilating Sandalphon, the additional power led to Rosiel reverting to a sickly, deteriorating body that looks closer to a preteen.
  • Mystical White Hair: Depicting his status as the inorganic angel, his haircolor is fittingly unnatural.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Sandalphon gives him one when Rosiel absorbs him. Rosiel sees himself in a dark, blood drenched room full of angels that he's killed, and just barely sees what looks like Katan's severed head hitting the floor before he screams at Sandalphon to stop.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Often drapes himself all over people, whether it's because of genuine affection or for manipulative reasons. This behavior is heavily frowned upon in Heaven, where even friendship between angels is forbidden, leaving many people to be very uncomfortable around him. But others consider his affectionate nature to be appropriate for his divine status.
  • No Woman's Land: Defied when Rosiel gives Katan a male body, since he knows how rough the society in Heaven is on women and wants to spare him that hardship. He cannot change God's laws, but he can protect Katan from them.
  • Parental Favoritism: Absolutely adored by God, unlike his twin sister. Given how God acted towards him, it's clear that He has no love for any of his children.
  • Power of Trust
    • Katan trusting Rosiel is one of the things that kept Rosiel from making Katan into one of his puppets. When Katan is mortally wounded during the apocalypse Setsuna started, Rosiel forces him to swallow one of his cells because he doesn't want to lose him. Katan points out that he'd be 'killing' the one, willingly loyal person he has.
    • The finale has Setsuna entrusting Rosiel with Sara's life. He asks Rosiel and Katan to make sure Sara makes it back home to Earth, past all the chaos and battles going on in Heaven. Rosiel delivers Sara safely to the warehouse she died in, leaving her resting in a bed of feathers.
  • Pulling Himself Together: Kira diagonally slices Rosiel's torso off. One half of Rosiel's body rips Kira's heart out of his chest and crushes it, leaving the other half of his body to reassemble itself easily back together, no harm done.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Rociel in the Omanga fan-translation.
  • Time Master: As one of the twins split-cloned from Adam Kadamon, Rosiel inherited the ability to use time magic from his mother. He uses it to age and corrode a bio-weapon bomb stuck in his shoulder.
  • Truly Single Parent: Rosiel used his holy magic to create a body for a low-class Grigori, turning into an angel that he ends up naming Katan. Rosiel secretly embraces Katan as 'his son'.
  • Villain's Dying Grace: After Alexiel stabs him, Rosiel asks her to pass his powers onto Setsuna — the Messiah, so he can prevent the apocalypse YHVH was planning to bring about.
  • Why Won't You Die?: Dobiel yells this when Rosiel survives a bio-weapon bomb, which would either explode when he attempts to remove it or slowly disperse a poison through his body if left in. Rosiel mocks him, wondering if he honestly though his bio-weapon could actually harm a body that even Rosiel himself had no idea how to kill.
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: An unstable angel that became more and more insane as his powers grew, wanting nothing more than for his twin sister to kill him before he ended up destroying the world.

    Katan
Voiced by: Shin-ichiro Miki (Japanese), Jeffrey Gimble (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/as_katan.png

Katan is a Cherubim rank angel and went down to Assiah, despite it being forbidden. He dispensed a CD labeled Angel Sanctuary to chosen humans and had them get obsessed with it, eventually using their lives and Tokyo's magnetic field to remove the seal keeping Rosiel trapped.

He used to be a Grigori, the lowest class of angels that don't even have a physical body. Rosiel ended up giving him a body and the name Katan, to give him a chance of making more of himself. He's completely devoted and loyal to Rosiel, though he has moments of knowing that his own actions aren't the best.

  • Child Prodigy: Manages to become a candidate for the Cherubim Think Tank — the leading angels of the second-highest choir — at a young age, though his efforts are done to ensure he'll meet Rosiel again.
  • Comforting Comforter: Stands up to Rosiel and stops him from completely absorbing Sara's data while she's passed out. Rosiel punishes Katan for stopping him, but Katan makes sure that Sara is alright after Rosiel leaves. When she wakes up, Katan had placed a blanket over her.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Katan is fiercly loyal to Rosiel. But after ingesting some of Rosiel's cells, Katan becomes conflicted over letting the assimilation complete. He wants to be there for Rosiel and stay by his side, but knows that allowing the assimilation would eventually render him a mindless puppet that wouldn't be able to help Rosiel. His conflicting emotions lead to him remaining as a grotesque form of electric cables and clumps of flesh for quite some time, until Katan chooses to keep walking down the path alongside Rosiel, even though he knows that it would be bloody and full of questionable actions.
  • Curse That Cures: Ended up mortally wounded when Setsuna began the apocalypse because he was trying to save Kirie. Rosiel offers him one of his cells because they would allow him to heal his wounds and survive. Katan refuses because ingesting the cells would mean he'd end up nothing more than a mindless puppet, like all the others that have gotten Rosiel's cells, and compares it to Rosiel killing his one, willing subordinate. Rosiel panics at the thought of Katan refusing and actually dying, so he forces him to swallow the cell and begin the synchronization process.
  • Cute Bookworm: Becoming part of the Think Tank required a lot of studying. He's also rather quiet and calm, intelligent, and often seen with a pile of books.
  • Death Glare: Throws one at Kirie when she claims that the limited intelligence of the Grigori simply means they are too stupid to realize when they are being mistreated.
  • The Glomp: When a young Katan managed to rise high enough in the Hierarchy to meet Rosiel in person, he threw his arms around him. Rosiel knocked him away with his whip and said he'd personally punish Katan for such disrespect — all just for show, as Rosiel reciprocates the affection when the two are alone, happy to see that 'his son' has achieved so much.
  • Love at First Sight: While still a formless Grigori, Katan perceived a flood of astral and mental light that was so beautiful and captivating, he thought it was God Himself that he saw. It was actually Rosiel's holy light. Katan eventually confesses to Rosiel that his heart was immediately taken by that and that, any time Rosiel demanded to know if he was beautiful, Katan always remembered that light and said he was.
  • Naked on Revival: Upon Katan choosing to allow being fully synchronized with Rosiel's cells, his grotesque golem form takes on his original shape, leaving him completely nude.
  • Sliding Scale of Unavoidable vs. Unforgivable: The state of Heaven has deteriorated so much under Sevothtarte's reign that Katan felt driven to do something about it. He truly believed that Rosiel was the only one that could fix things, and set about to break the seal on him, knowing that it would require human sacrifices. He took the risk because doing nothing would leave Heaven to be split by class divisions and angels killing each other, which would also impact on Earth as angels would be neglecting to take care of it.
  • You Must Be Cold: Katan rushes to Rosiel's side and urges him to escape from Anagura as killing Kira triggered Lucifer's death, and Hell was beginning to collapse. Rosiel remains behind to taunt Setsuna, but leaves at the last second. Katan puts his coat over Rosiel's shoulders, whose clothes are ripped from fighting. After being injured and insulted, Rosiel finds comfort in Katan's gesture.

    Jibril
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/as_jibril.png

Jibril is the Archangel of Water and leader of the Cherubim angels. For some time, she's been in what appears to be a coma-like state. She remains unmoving and unblinking, and has been placed on a seat in the Water Garden. Metatron comes to visit her sometimes and talks to her.

Little is known about Jibril herself, though several angels talk about her. They tell of how Jibril was the only angel willing to openly oppose Sevothtarte's cruel and heartless regime, often butting heads with him. Others say that she felt pity for the formless Grigori.

  • Archangel Gabriel: Known by her Islamic name of Jibril. She doesn't appear in the series herself, save for flashbacks or as a soulless figure in the Water Garden. Jibril has a needle in her neck that has separated her body and soul from another, keeping her unmoving. When Metatron pulls the needle out, Jibril awakens and claims to be Sara — Sara is the reincarnated soul of Jibril, but doesn't seem to have any of her memories. After the body of Sara Mudo is revived by Raphael, Sara's soul returns to it. It can be assumed that, once Sara dies in her human life, her soul will return to Jibril's body and regain all of her memories.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Downplayed, as her hair and eyes are different shades of blue.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic.
  • In-Series Nickname: Zig-zagged in some translations. 'Jibril' is initially treated like a nickname, with Sevothtarte being the only one to call her Gabriel. This gets dropped and Jibril is treated like her official name.
  • Making a Splash: The elemental angel of water. Sara has no actual control over Jibril's water powers, but does manage to use them one time to resurrect Setsuna's body with Raphael's help.
  • Odd Name Out: Out of the archangels, she's the only one known by her Islamic name.
  • Reincarnation: Her soul was reincarnated into Sara Mudo, the sister of the current incarnation of Alexiel. This was done by Sevothtarte to achieve two goals — rid himself of Jibril, who was openly opposing his policies, and creating a watcher angel for Alexiel's incarnation that would ensure the heavenly curse would run its course.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Gabriel in the Omanga fan translation.
  • Water Is Womanly: Djibril wields water as an elemental power, and is the only female of the four Archangels. When the four elements are required but she's unavailable, Demon princess Kurai evokes water in her place.

    Michael
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/as_michael.png

Michael is the Archangel of Fire and leader of the Powers, the General of Heaven's Army. He's a hot-blooded and moody guy, who doesn't care about any politics or manipulations going on in Heaven. He just wants a good fight.

He has a twin brother in the form of Lucifel, and a prediction was done during their birth, claiming one to become a Prince of Light and the other a Prince of Darkness. Michael fought against Lucifel in the first Great War of Heaven, believing Lucifel to become the Prince of Darkness a personal betrayal, but was incapable of defeating him and has a huge complex over this.

  • Archangel Michael: Unlike the usual depictions of the Prince of Light being a noble warrior, this Michael is anything but that. He's pretty much a moody teenager and loves the thrill of fighting, and wants nothing more than to get back at his older twin brother. But he's also aware of the crass contrast and invoked the image of 'Saint Michael' by dressing his second-in-command in armor and a long, golden wig to fool Sevothtarte's messenger.
  • Blood Knight: Delights in fighting anyone he perceives to be a powerful opponent, and even tells Sevothtarte that, if he wants Michael to do something, then to just start a war already. He even tracks down Setsuna and chooses to fight him in the time-frozen Assiah.
  • Demon Slaying: Part of the territory of being the Prince of Light, and Michael finds it to be a recreationally enjoyable experience and stress-reliever. He even brings Raphael souvenirs from his hunting trips, like medically interesting horns and claws.
  • Fiery Redhead: Naturally something applying to the archangel of fire.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Extremely volatile, impulsive, and aggressive.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Raphael, whom he considers his best friend.
  • Hot-Blooded: To say that he's quick to get excited over things would be an understatement.
  • In-Series Nickname: Mika. Usually dropped by Raphael, and used to tease him. Sara takes to calling him that, too, but he seems to somewhat tolerate it from her.
  • Immortal Immaturity: His powers developed rapidly, leaving his physical growth to be stunted and his mental growth to be stuck as that of a teenager. It's implied that emotionally and mentally maturing could lead to him aging further, though given that it's his brother telling him this, Michael is unsure if he's telling the truth.
  • Motor Mouth: Can sometimes keep talking without letting the other person get a word in edgewise.
  • The Napoleon: Anyone who mentions his height will get fried.
  • Playing with Fire: The archangel of Fire.
  • Prophetic Fallacy: Michael was originally believed to be the Prince of Darkness, as the prediction said he and his brother would be the Princes of Light and Darkness. With everyone having labeled Michael as said prince and swooning over Lucifel, his animosity with his brother was fueled. Upon Lucifel rebelling against Heaven, it became clear that Michael was the destined Prince of Light.
  • Sibling Rivalry: His older twin brother is a touchy subject for him, as Michael was often unfavorably compared to Lucifel. He began to detest his brother, believing Lucifel to always look at him with a mocking attitude, and tried to kill Lucifel during his rebellion. He failed and instead killed their longstanding caretaker and close friend, Bal, who threw herself in front of Lucifel.
  • Smug Super: The self-proclaimed 'Angel Superstar'.

    Raphael
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/as_raphael.png

Raphael is the Archangel of Wind and leader of the Virtues. He's a frequent skirtchaser and well-known to prefer spending his time with women instead of taking part in any official matters. Raphael is known as the Angel of Healing, giving him something like a doctor status among angels.

After he meets Sara Mudo, he begins to form a rather odd relationship with her. Sometimes they butt heads, other times they get along well, and then Raphael can't understand his own thoughts and actions anymore. While he does choose to oppose Sevothtarte's regime, he wants nothing to do with Setsuna and his plan to fix things, but remains to function as Sara's physician.

  • Archangel Raphael: Discussed by Sara, who recounts that she learned that Saint Raphael was the angel of healing and patron saint of travellers, and that he always carries a bag of potions around and wears sandals. Raphael bluntly tells her that those are just stories humans have made up and wonders why he'd constantly be carrying things around.
  • Attempted Rape: Belial's attempted rape of him was the beginning of his misogyny.
  • Belated Love Epiphany: Realizes that he actually loves his longstanding assistant, Barbiel, when she throws herself in front of him and gets fatally wounded.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Displays some traits of this when he falls for Sara. He disobeys Sevothtarte's direct orders, knowing that doing so could mean he'll be killed on sight, becomes incredibly jealous at Setsuna because Sara loves him and steals her treasured ring, with implications that Raphael was willing to kill Setsuna.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine.
  • Healing Hands: Can heal injuries by simply holding his hands over the injury. He manages to resurrect Setsuna Mudo's body this way, but when he attempts to heal Sara's eyes when she was blind in Jibril's body, he fails.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Carries a fatally wounded Barbiel to a place with lots of wind and begs the element to lend him enough power to heal her injuries, despite being heavily injured himself. Another subordinate even warned him that attempting to heal someone with such injuries in his current condition meant basically committing suicide.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Michael is his best friend.
  • In-Series Nickname: Called Raphy by Sara.
  • Kavorka Man: He's not considered unattractive, but he's a sleazy misogynist and can be quite unpleasant to be around. Women fall for his charm and actions, but none stays for very long.
  • Ladykiller in Love: Begins to openly oppose Sevothtarte's orders when he realizes that he's fallen for Sara.
  • Left Hanging: His ultimate fate is left unclear. While he managed to save Barbiel, he overstrained himself so much that he was placed into a suspended status inside of a healing tank. It's unclear how long it will take him to wake up again, or even if he'll wake up at all, but Michael stays by the tank and says that he'll be patient and wait a while for Raphael to return.

    Uriel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/as_uriel.png

Uriel is the Archangel of Earth, as well as the Angel of Justice and of Death. He used to be a member of the Seven Great Angels, and the one to run the heavenly court, but he banished himself to Hell after sentencing Alexiel to her cursed fate.

He initially appeared as an opponent to Setsuna in Hell, being the overseer of the world tree and the one to have Sara's soul after her death. But he tells Setsuna that Zaphikel has already taken her to Heaven, leading Setsuna to turn his attention to there.

Uriel becomes somewhat of a mentor to Kato, and wants to follow Setsuna's mission to help Adam Kadamon. He eventually returns to Heaven, wanting to remove Sevothtarte from ruling the place.

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Had an unrequited crush on Alexiel.
  • Archangel Uriel: Uriel was the Angel of Judgement in Heaven and the one to have chosen the punishment Alexiel, getting her branded as a Fallen and setting up her curse. But he left Heaven and went to Hell because he felt remorse over his actions, and wanted to atone. When Setsuna meets him, Uriel tells him all this and wants to be sentenced himself, but Setsuna spares him.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Donned the Persona mask to kill off his emotions and make his job as judge and executioner easier on himself, since he disliked violence. Unfortunately, the mask proved to be more powerful and took over his psyche, until Setsuna breaks it.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic.
  • Gentle Giant: Played with because he first appeared violent and willing to fight Setsuna, but that was part of the Persona mask having taken over his mind. Upon breaking the mask, Uriel is freed of it and shows his actual personality. Just a very tall man that disliked violence and preferred to live a peaceful life surrounded by plants and animals.
  • Judge, Jury, and Executioner: As the Angel of Judgement, it was his job to decide on the judgement and execution of souls deamed too evil to repent. Before his voluntary banishment to Hell, he was also the ruling angel of the heavenly court. He also bursts into the trial judging over Sara Mudo and exposes Sevothtarte as a fraud.
  • Keeping Secrets Sucks: Kato insists that Uriel keep the fact that Kato's soul is disintergarting a secret. It's clear that this is tearing Uriel up inside, but doesn't say anything.
  • Phlebotinum Bomb: God gave Uriel the Egg of Wormwood, a device that was said to destroy all sinners and leave the righteous unharmed when used. Upon setting off, though, the egg drew a shower of meteors to itself, and began to indiscriminately kill and destroy everything within range. Uriel calls this out, saying that this even kills those that were righteous and following in God's crazy demands.
  • Second Love: He eventually lets go of his feelings for Alexiel and the finale implied that he recently realized his feelings for Doll, to whom he rushes back to Hell for.
  • The Voiceless: Ripped his vocal chords out after speaking the sentence upon Alexiel, so he wouldn't condemn anyone with words anymore. He instead uses his mind to send words directly to another person's heart to talk. But he eventually decided to give the modern technology of Heaven a chance and uses a device that simulates his voice again.

    Zaphikel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/as_zaphikel.png

Zaphikel is the leader of the Thrones and high-ranking angel in Heaven. He seems to be somewhat oblivious in his demeanor, though turns out to be much sharper than one initially believes from his laidback attitude. He went down to Hell and took Sara's soul from Uriel, bringing it to Heaven and ensuring that Setsuna would come to him.

He also turns out to be the leader of Anima Mundi, an underground group of angels that plan Sevothtarte's downfall. When Setsuna comes after him to get Sara's soul, Zaphikel strikes a deal with him. If Setsuna plays up the role of The Messiah to the members of the Anima Mundi, he'll tell him where Sara is. With the deal fulfilled, though, Zaphikel ends up captured by Sevothtarte's men and sentenced to death.

  • Blinded by the Light: Upon gazing into the holy light that was Adam Kadamon, Zaphikel was rendered blind.
  • Broken Pedestal: He believed Raziel's pedestal for him would break, after Zaphikel reveals that he's nowhere near the good person Raziel believes him to be. But when he shows his status as a branded angel and the leader of the rebel movement Anima Mundi to him, Raziel retains his pedestal.
  • The Chessmaster: The entirety of the Yetzirah arc — from Jibril's planned escape to allowing Setsuna to recklessly and carelessly run around Heaven, leaving many angels and Anima Mundi members to die for their sake, and even his own imprisonment — were all planned by him from the beginning. All to make Setsuna realize what his position and status as The Messiah actually meant and give him some perspective.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: His intended fate after being subjected to Wing Dropping. His wings were chopped off, leaving him to be exposed to bacteria and infections, and basically letting him slowly rot from within before eventually dying.
  • Dying as Yourself: Was shot by a toxic spike, with the toxin having the side-effect of stimulating his brain enough to have Zaphikel regain his sense of self temporarily. He retains his mind long enough to come to peace with himself, appoint Raziel as the new leader of Anima Mundi, and get shot by Raziel before he became a mindless, hungry, rotting monster again.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Often drawn with his eyes closed, though he does open them frequently when he wants to be serious. Makes little difference because of his blindness.
  • Interrupted Suicide
    • Interrupts Setsuna's suicide attempt by splashing hot tea on him.
    • Was ordered to commit suicide by the elders, so he wouldn't be reincarnated. Zaphikel began to slice his throat open, but Adam Kadamon appeared and prevented Zaphikel's death, closing his wound.
  • Love Redeems: His past revolved around love making him want to change. He used to be a 'rabbit hunter' — angels that hunt and murder angel children — and relished in the blood and death of others. When he ended up falling in love with Anael and the two even expected their own, forbidden angel child, Zaphikel realized he wanted to have a peaceful life with his growing family. But his last mission was a set-up to get rid of him and Anael, who had attempted her own redemption and joined the rebel movement.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Raziel is his son. But Zaphikel didn't realize this himself until seconds before his death. His blindness meant he never saw Raziel's face before, and only saw it then because Adam Kadamon had restored his eyesight, and because he thought the embryo he cut out of Anael's body and placed into artificial amniotic fluid had died.
  • Mercy Kill: Raziel shoots him just as Zaphikel loses his mind and hungers for angel flesh again, saving him from a prolonged, agonizing death.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Comes across as a laidback and cheerful guy that barely takes anything seriously. But he's quite cunning beneath his mask, capable of planning ahead multiple steps.
  • Please Spare Him, My Liege!: When Sevothtarte blames Raziel for the explosion in the slums, when the High Council had hidden bombs inside the goods Raziel had requested, he orders him to be arrested and executed as a terrorist. But Zaphikel drops to his knees and begs Sevothtarte to leave the punishment to him, as Raziel is his subordinate and responsibility.
  • Rebel Leader: Leads the rebel movement Anima Mundi, plotting Sevothtarte's downfall.
  • Traumatic Haircut: Part of his sentence of Wing Dropping involved cutting his hair to chinlength. It's presented as traumatic, though Zaphikel himself is completely calm.

    Raziel
Raziel is a young angel and the assistant for Zaphikel. He often reprimands and chastises Zaphikel for being aloof and not following his duties as leader of the Thrones. When he realizes that Zaphikel is keeping a human soul hidden, he calls him out on this.

Zaphikel eventually reveals to Raziel his real status as the leader of Anima Mundi, a rebel organization that plans to bring Sevothtarte's downfall. Raziel feels honored about being told the truth and offers to become a member himself, being sent as an ambassador to Setsuna. When he learns that Zaphikel was imprisoned, Raziel heads to the Angel's Corridor and free him.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a gentle and kind young angel, sometimes even coming across as meek to others. But when Raziel sets his mind to do something, like planning to rescue Zaphikel from prison, he becomes scary and shows a cold-blooded side.
  • Break the Cutie: His idealistic views end up shattered when he realizes the true extention of Sevothtarte's corruption. He wanted to help the angels and angel children in the slums by requesting goods like food and medicine, but the goods had explosived hidden inside of them, murdering several angels in front of Raziel. And then he ends up being blamed for being the one to have set it up, with Zaphikel's begging of Sevothttarte being the only thing that spares Raziel's life. Already reeling from those events, Raziel gets further broken when he learns that Zaphikel was imprisoned and sentenced to death and heads out to save him. Only to be too late, and Zaphikel had already gotten his wings removed, dooming him to a slow and agonizing death. Raziel ends up appointed the new leader of Anima Mundi and has to shoot his beloved mentor Zaphikel. Nonetheless, Raziel manages to grow through these traumatic experiences and become a comepetent fighter.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Becomes the new leader of the Anima Mundi rebel movement.
  • The Empath: Has the ability to synchronize the hearts of others with his own. This allows him to 'talk' to Sara while her soul is locked away in Zaphikel's office and 'see' Zaphikel's past through touch. His powers come from him being an angel child.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has golden-blond hair and a sweet and idealistic personality. His idealism ends up broken from several events, but his nature still remains.
  • It's All My Fault: Blames himself for the explosions in the slums, although it took Zaphikel's words to make him realize that was the case. Raziel was the one to tell the High Council about the hidden angels and angel children in the slums, and was the one to request food and medicine to be sent to them. As such, it was his actions that gave the High Council prime opportunity to place explosives in the goods and exterminate unwanted angels in one fell swoop.
  • My Greatest Failure: Feels like he failed Shatiel and the angel children in the slums because of his wide-eyed idealistic views.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Using his powers leads to his eyes turning red. While trying to free Zaphikel from prison, he used his power to manipulate an angel soldier to point his own gun at his head and pulling the trigger.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Takes a lot after his mother, Anael.

    Sevothtarte
Prime Minister of Heaven and Metatron's guardian. Sevothtarte is a rough tyrant who kills angels without a single moment of hesitation, whether the reason they deserve to die is worth it or just brought upon by anger.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He's a cruel dictator feared by all of Heaven. He's pulling the strings behind puppet king Metatron's back, but the high-ranking angels don't respect him (they don't even bother gracing council meetings with their presence), and rebels are plotting his downfall. Since she openly opposed his policies, he disposed of Jibril by causing her incarnation as Sara. Ultimately, Sevothtarte is revealed to be Lailah (an angel scientist branded as fallen after she had been gang-raped) and becomes a pawn to Sandalphon and Rosiel.
  • Cool Crown: Of the circlet variant, often in gold and very chunky. It serves the purpose of hiding the cross-shaped scar on the forehead.
  • Dramatic Unmask: After the mask and crown are removed, the iconic cross-shaped scar on the forehead and Lilith's stigma on her cheek are revealed, showing that the person behind the mask is, and always has been, Lailah.
  • The Dreaded: Sevothtarte rules by fear and is known to go around killing anyone who offends him. When he took over Heaven's High Council, the public no longer felt safe to protest freely. None of the Council will stand up to him, except for Jibril, who suffers the consequences, and Rosiel, who is powerful enough to take on anyone. Sevothtarte's influence and terrifying presence are partly due to Sandalphon protecting him.
  • In-Series Nickname: Sevi (Sevy in VIZ).
  • Malevolent Masked Man: The lower half of his face is constantly covered, said to be because of scars all over his lower face that came about from the last Great War. Actually covers up the identity and stigma on the cheek.
  • Terrified of Germs: It is said that Sevothtarte smells like disinfectant. He always wears gloves - he disgustedly disposes of one in the fire after Dobiel kisses his hand. Rosiel plays on this fear when Sevi arrives late to a meeting, saying he'll forgive him if Sevi kisses his right hand.
  • Unperson: Any attempts at finding out about Sevothtarte's past before becoming Metatron's guardian only increases the pile of corpses. Just leave Sevothtarte's past alone. Sevothtarte has done this to himself, stating that 'that dirty woman (Lailah) never existed'.
  • Walking Spoiler: Sevothtarte has his reasons for hiding his face...

    Metatron
Voiced by: Yuri Shiratori (Japanese)
A toddler who is officially King of Heaven but really just Sevothtarte's puppet. Sandalphon's twin brother.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: Deconstructed. With Rosiel imprisoned, Metatron is the only heir to Heaven's Throne. He sits in the big gold chair and his Prime Minister, Sevothtarte, calls all the shots. He has a vague understanding that he is the King of Heaven, but he lacks the capacity to understand any of Heaven's politics. He spends his days playing with stuffed animals, being cared for by maids and Sevothtarte, and he was close friends with Jibril before Sevothtarte disposed of her.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: They say Metatron has prophetic dreams; this is usually because he sees his unborn twin brother, Sandalphon, in his dreams, and Sandalphon tells him things he wouldn't otherwise know about.
  • Synchronization: Synchronised with Sandalphon. This is an intentional safeguard. Sandalphon is immensely powerful and Metatron is small and powerless; killing Metatron will take Sandalphon out with him.
  • Winged Humanoid: Inverted - In the dividing of six wings to create these twins, YHWH gave all six to Sandalphon, leaving Metatron wingless and without powers of his own. It is sometimes possible for Sandalphon to use his powers through Metatron, which can result in Metatron's body appearing to have six wings, but Sevothtarte has Metatron on medication to try to keep this from happening.

    Sandalphon
Metatron's twin brother, who was said to have died at birth. Actually very much alive. He and Metatron were yet another failed attempted copy of Seraphita's power, with Sandalphon getting all the power and Metatron getting a body that doesn't need to stay in a tank.
  • And I Must Scream: Is in a tank, paralyzed by magic needles, for much of the story.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: His immense powers mean he does pose a serious threat to almost everyone. He has the ability to manipulate his twin brother, Metatron, but he has the mind of a child, and he overestimates himself. Because God has nicknamed him "Little YHWH" (basically God Junior) Sandalphon believes himself to be superior to the angels from previous sets of twins, particularly Rosiel. Although Rosiel is not as powerful as Sandalphon, he outsmarts Sandalphon, then absorbs and assimilates him.
  • Creepy Child: Whenever he's possessing Metatron... at least until he gives him a temporary post-pubescent body.
  • Dreamwalker: Is nigh-omnipotent in the dream-realm.
  • Eyes Do Not Belong There: Though they are sometimes drawn symbolically, looking like peacock feathers, Sandalphon's wings are dotted with eyes, each of which is fully functional.
  • Fetus Terrible: Has been this for his entire life, and his main goal is getting past this stage.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Walks a very thin line between the two. His true form appears as a baby's head surrounded by tentacled eyes and scraggled feathers, while his power is both unique and immense.
  • Synchronization: Synchronised with Metatron. This is an intentional safeguard. Sandalphon is immensely powerful and Metatron is small and powerless; killing Metatron will take Sandalphon out with him.

    Kirie
A candidate for the Archangels Think Tank. She comes down to Assiah and takes over as Rosiel's right hand, trying to kill Sara Mudo to please Rosiel. After she succeeds, Setsuna's unleashing of the Apocalypse kills her. Kirie's soul heads down to Hades and is found by Uriel, who feels for her because of her unrequited love and gives her a new, plant-based mechanical body of a doll.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: She is in love with Rosiel, though he doesn't care about her. She later falls in love with Uriel and sees herself as always being the poor girl full of unrequited crushes that keeps waiting for someone. But it is implied that Uriel may like her, too.
  • Comforting Comforter: Upon finding Rosiel asleep on the couch, Kirie takes a moment to admire his beautiful features while she pulls a blanket over him. He spoils her romantic gesture by calling her 'Katan' as he's waking up.
  • Identical Stranger: As 'Doll', she looks remarkably similar to Sara with dark hair. Justified, as Uriel created Doll's body in Sara's image.

    Dobiel
Cherubim Think Tank No. 2. He'll do anything for a promotion.
  • Smug Snake: Tries REALLY hard to be Sevothtarte's dragon. Cannot make the cut.

    Lailah
A researcher who went missing after her involvement with the creation of Metatron and Sandalphon.
  • Disease Bleach: Lailah's black hair turns white after the ordeal that leads to her being branded Fallen - a poetic manifestation of Sevi's dreams of a 'pure white world'.
  • Driven to Suicide: After being raped by Sandalphon and losing her mind, Lailah hears Nidheg's final words to her and she throws herself after him out of the window.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: From a rather shy, intelligent researcher to manipulative leader of the entire Heaven.
  • Rape as Drama: A terrible gang-rape from her colleagues drives Lailah to take up the mantle of Sevothtarte to try and manipulate her way into a 'pure white world' version of Heaven.
  • Rape Leads to Insanity: Lailah was raped by several co-workers, which led her to mentally break and begin her insane plan for a Perfectly White World and willingly changing her body to disappear. And it happens again with Sandalphon after her true identity is revealed.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: In Nidheg's memory of Lailah, Setsuna sees a woman with blue-black hair, snow-white skin and red lips. Lailah disliked people looking at her face, out of self-consciousness about the scar on her forehead. Nonetheless, Nidheg was attracted to her right away, but his attention made her uneasy.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Layla (in German & Omanga fan translation).
  • Together in Death: Lailah throws herself out the window after being raped into insanity in order to be with Nidheg one last time.
  • Unsettling Gender-Reveal: Lailah and Sevothtarte are the same person.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just try to talk a lot about her without spoiling anything.

    Anael
A researcher on the Dominions Think Tank prior to her death. Lailah's friend, Zaphikel's lover and Raziel's mother.
  • The Lost Lenore: After Anael's death by Zaphikel's hand (as well as the assumed death of their child), he accepts his sentence (death by suicide) – but when Adam Kadamon saves his life, Zaphikel takes up Anael's work for the rebel movement and honors her memory (he has a bust of her in a hidden room in his office).

    Teiaiel
Angel-eating little girl.
  • Eaten Alive: Subverted – together with other angelic street urchins, she is lured out of the slums with a promise to be fed, but she knows this means that she will be fed to someone else, yet she still accepts the offer. Tiara is the last to be eaten, but when she offers herself to Katan willingly, he expresses remorse, and they bond over both having eaten angel flesh.
  • In-Series Nickname: Tiara.
  • Mark of Shame: After Tiara ate a dead angel (who told her to do so, lest she starve to death), she's branded as Fallen and thrown into the slums.
  • Meaningful Name: “Angel of the future” – Rosiel encourages Katan to bury Tiara's body so that it can return to the soil, becoming a foundation for new life.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Tiaiel (in German).
  • Telepathy: Tiara's power to read minds works even on the dead. When she's locked up in a room full of corpses, they “talk” to her, and one of them encourages her to eat their dead body to keep herself from starving to death. She also uses her ability to communicate with Katan while he's in a monstrous state and has trouble talking.

    Shateiel
With only one wing, she is deemed too flawed for angelic society and has to live in the slums. Raziel befriends her, but she is killed when Sevothtarte has supplies rigged with explosives sent to the slums.

    Moonlil
One of Sevothtarte's maids, assigned the task of watching Jibril while her body is housing Sara's soul. Sara bonds with her and names her Moonlil, after a flower (moonlily) that blooms by night. Moonlil is a Staker, loyal and resilient, with a childlike mind.
  • Happiness in Slavery: She genuinely enjoys serving Jibril (well, Sara) because she is nice to her, but Moonlil's brain is conditioned not to question authority. Because of this, she quickly regains her cheerful demeanor even after severe mistreatment.
  • In-Series Nickname: She asks Sara to call her Lil.
  • Meaningful Name: Sara gives her the name Moonlil when a single moonlily blooms during the daytime – like this single flower, Moonlil is a bit different from others of her kind. She's considered too talkative for a Staker, and she recalls having been one of the few thinking Grigori. Her name is also significant because Jibril, the angel incarnated as Sara, is associated with lilies.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Color art depicts her with pale pink hair, and she's very cheerful, friendly and forgiving.

    Sariel
Leader of the Principalities.

    Other Angels
