Playable Characters

    Both
  • Childhood Friends: Milo and Lola have known each other since preschool.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: They're very close, but they refuse to date each other. Lampshaded by Lola in the opening sequence.
Lola: [after someone says everyone thinks they are dating] I'm just saying it will be too weird now. [Milo is] funderful, [Milo knows he's] funderful. But you can't date someone you already seen cry at a coffee commercial.
    • Notably, they are so close, they get to share a personal demon and go through processing together. Normally, this only happens for "murder suicides and moms with albino sons." Even most spouses aren't close enough to share a personal demon.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Inverted. Lola is a more cynical down-to-earth girl, while Milo, despite being timid is more enthusiastic about getting to know people.

    Lola Woolfe
Voiced by: Janina Gavankar

Milo's best friend and one of the two main characters.

  • Black Sheep: Lola's personality differs from her older sisters which leads to her being picked on by them. It doesn't help that she's actually their half-sister, since their dad remarried to Lola's mom.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Oh yes. She always has a dry one-liner for every situation.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Her older sisters called her "Doodle" because her grandfather once commented that her baby hair looked like something from a cartoon.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Despite always being pessimistic, Lola actively donates to charities and helps out at homeless shelters.

    Sang "Milo" Bong
Voiced by: Khoi Dao

Lola's best friend and one of the two main characters.

  • Asian and Nerdy: His name and design clearly depict him as East Asian and there are certain lines that mention that he gets good grades. He's also a fan of Star Wars and Batman.
  • Butt-Monkey: The universe seems to go out of its way to humiliate this guy, from being remembered in college for throwing up all over his college admissions director, to Lola forcing him to eat inedible candy (if the player chooses).
  • Embarrassing Nickname: He was called "Colonel Shitlips" in college.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Despite valuing Lola, it's later revealed that he also wanted to "fit in" with other kids his age. It's implied that this was his motivation for going to the college party with Lola that ultimately led them to their untimely deaths.
  • Shrinking Violet: Despite his attempts to be otherwise, Milo is much more socially awkward than Lola.
  • Speech Impediment: Milo stammers in nearly every other sentence.

The Monarchs of Hell

    In General
The top Fallen Angels in Hell who rebelled against God in an attempt to take over Creation, only to fail and be banished to Hell. They include: Satan, Apollyon, Beelzebub, Onoskelis, Asmodeus and formerly Salathiel.

  • Badass Fingersnap: They do this when using their powers.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: While they had a falling out, they still love Lucifer and genuinely want what's best for him.
  • Fallen Angel: The originals.
  • Noble Demon: None of them will ever lie or deceive you. Sure, some, like Apollyon, are rather cagey about their plans, but the details they do give you are truthful. They will also always keep their promises, so long as you keep yours.
  • Sibling Team: They're all brothers and sisters.
  • The Omniscient: While they don't know literally everything, they are privy to the identities and memories of each human that enters Hell.
  • Verbal Tic: They all seem to have a habit of quoting famous authors, such as William Shakespeare, William Blake, and Michel de Montaigne.
  • We Used to Be Friends: They all had a falling out with Lucifer when his alcoholism started getting out of hand. Downplayed with Asmodeus though, since he said that he went to Lucifer for support when his wife left him.

    Satan
Voiced by: Dave Fennoy

Satan himself and the ruler of all Hell.

  • Affably Evil: Satan is very cordial and polite when speaking to others, but he's also feared for his brutality if he's been crossed.
  • The Alcoholic: He turned into a heavy drinker some time after the war in Heaven, leading to Hell becoming less stable than usual.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: If asked why Milo and Lola are in Hell, he'll respond with one of these.
Satan: [if asked by Milo] Right now, it's six-fifteen in Madrid, and there's a man setting out a dress for his girlfriend — that he knows will look revealing in the day, but will be too cold in the theater they're going to. And when he makes love to her after, he will think of the actress in the film and not how he picked out a dress too cold. And when he dies fifty years from now, fat and useless, he will open his eyes and find himself here. And he will ask me the same question you're asking me now: "What did I do to deserve this?". The real question, Milo, is... what did you do... to deserve anything else?
[if asked by Lola] Right now, it's one-fifteen in Colima and a woman's attending her father's wedding to a woman she doesn't particularly like, and when she knows he will ask her to dance, she will go to the bathroom and sit in a stall with her feet off the floor for fifteen minutes. And when she dies fifty years from now, frail and useless, she will open her eyes and find herself here. And she will ask me the same question you are asking me now: "What did I do to deserve this?" The real question, Lola, is... what did you do... to deserve anything else?
  • Big Brother Instinct: The official blurb for Asmodeus' artwork states that he's Satan's younger brother. When Asmodeus got divorced, he says that Satan was his main source of support.
  • Celestial Bureaucracy: He oversaw Hell's operations before his constant partying had him shirk his duties.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: His reaction to Salathiel building a church to allow souls to intone with God was to strip her of her status and conscript her as a psychopomp.
  • The Dreaded: Though he's very charming, many fear being on his bad side.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: It's heavily implied that he started drinking after he lost the War in Heaven.
  • Fantastic Racism: He makes it perfectly clear that he doesn't care for personal demons, seeing them as lesser beings.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride. On top of trying to usurp God and take over the "family business" (which ends up backfiring), Satan doesn't take kindly to anyone intentionally disrespecting him and refuses to listen to his friends and family when they try to talk to him about his drinking problem.
  • Heel Realization: Should Milo and Lola either forfeit or lose the drinking game, Satan finally notices how badly he's been affected by his drinking problem.
  • I Have Many Names: Characters in Afterparty use the following names interchangeably when talking about or to him: Satan, Lucifer, Luke, Morningstar. And that's not including the many many different titles he has.
  • Large and in Charge: He's easily the tallest character in the game and, well... he's Satan.
  • Mind over Matter: He uses this to kick Milo and Lola outside of the room after he tells them to go outdrink the other Monarchs.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: He doesn't make the rules of Hell, but he's expected to enforce them.
  • Red Baron: Since this is Satan, he's also called: the Devil, the Angel of Darkness, Prince of Lies, Prince of Partying among other things.
  • So Proud of You: Before the drinking contest, he tells Milo and Lola that he's delighted by the accomplishments made during their journey and would be honored to let them go back to Earth if they win. If they beat Satan, he'll say that he's proud of them.

    Apollyon
Voiced by: Sarah Emaleh

Former Judge of the Dead, now a no-nonsense lawyer.

  • Affectionate Nickname: "Polly" is hers.
  • Celestial Bureaucracy: Was a Grand Judge of the Dead before her retirement.
  • Disappointed in You: Should the player choose to help Roberto and not rig his trial, she'll express this. She'll do it again if the player enables Satan in the finale.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She not only admits to being this, but she tries to convince Milo and Lola to rig a trial and get a man wrongfully sentenced to Hell. Turns out that the man in question was the leading specialist in alcoholics anonymous.
Apollyon: Montaigne, in his wisdom, put only stubbornness below deceit in his ranking of mannered offenses. I personally disagree, but... I can see his point. Even so... I have lied tonight, and will lie more... To annihilate a particularly virulent strain of stubbornness from someone very near and dear to me. And you two are going to help me do it.
  • The Starscream: During the game's story, there are rumors spreading about Apollyon wanting to usurp her brother Satan. They turn out to be untrue. What she's trying to do is stage an intervention for Satan's drinking problem.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Her character is as tall as the tallest demons (apart from Satan) and is taller than all humans. Also, befitting a high ranking lawyer and former judge, the most elegantly dressed.

    Asmodeus
Voiced by: Paul Bates

A Monarch whose job it is to come up with new and creative ways to torture the damned. By the start of the story, he's going through a rough divorce with his ex, Beth.

  • Affectionate Nickname: He sometimes goes by "Al".
  • Dance-Off: How the player must earn his Seal of Approval to challenge Satan to a drink-off. According to Bicker, he hasn't lost in millennia.
  • Took A Level In Cynicism: While he's a down-to-earth guy, his divorce has made him understandably bitter about relationships. Sam tells Lola and Milo not to bring up love because of it.

    Beelzebub
Voiced by: Jon Lipow

Satan's overworked brother who manages the day-to-day operations in Hell.

    Onoskelis
Voiced by: Jackie Tohn

In charge of Hell's entertainment, Onoskelis frequently makes deals with aspiring musicians on Earth in exchange for their souls.

  • Back for the Finale: Despite Sam saying that Ono goes on vacation when Milo and Lola have to outdrink the Monarchs, her character model can be found on the right side of the screen during all of the endings, but it's sometimes quickly blocked out of view by other characters.
  • Bad Boss: Implied. Lynda mentions that she often verbally abuses her assistants, but the game doesn't show it.
  • Deal with the Devil: She's usually the ones making these when it comes to celebrities, namely musicians.

Demons

    In General
The denizens of Hell who work to enact punishments upon the wayward deceased.

  • Affably Evil: Some of them are genuinely friendly, but sadistically torturing people is the norm in Hell, so they can come off as this.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Downplayed. They have a lot of similarities to humans (ex. Even Evil Has Loved Ones), but they also have a "bad is good" mentality.
  • Teleportation: They all can do this and use it to get around when not using vehicles.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Ultimately, they see tormenting the souls of the damned as a job.

    Samantha "Sam" Hill/Salathiel Mechidiel
Voiced by: Ashly Burch

A psychopomp/ferrywoman and Milo and Lola's guide in Hell.

  • Almighty Janitor: She's a cabby who is not only Lucifer's sister, but a former Monarch.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: She knows she's in a video game and at one point will even point to you.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She outclasses Lola in this department.
  • Exposition Fairy: As Milo and Lola's guide, she spouts exposition on the game's lore.
  • Foreshadowing: Her very in-depth knowledge of the Monarchs, quoting a famous author note  and implied mild omnisciencenote  build up to The Reveal that she was actually a Monarch.
  • Humans Are Bastards: She doesn't have a high opinion about humans.
Sam: That double-helix you call your DNA is a merry-go-round God set in motion at the Cape of Good Hope. But it also drives you jackanapes to kill and eat and fuck each other over and over and... It's a wonder any of you made it to Elysium. But it's not your fault. Blame the first of you.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She acts condescending and snarky towards the human protagonists, but she's kind enough to help them out when they need it.
  • Neutrality Backlash: When the War of Heaven started, Sam refused to pick a side as she just wanted everyone to behave like a normal family again. God took issue with that, and cast her down with the other Fallen Angels.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Her real name is Salathiel Mechidiel, but almost everyone calls her Sam.
  • Open Secret: The revelation that Sam used to be a Monarch is casually revealed by a passerby demon on Odds Bodkins, much to her displeasure. She also mentions that her passengers tell her that they're worried about Lucifer.
  • Punny Name: "Sam Hill" is antiquated American slang of uncertain origin, used as a polite substitute for the words 'Hell' or 'devil' (most commonly "what in the Sam Hill?!").
  • The Reveal: She used to be one of the Monarchs of Hell.

    Sister Mary Wormhorn
Voiced by: Erin Yvette

Milo and Lola's shared Personal Demon, a type of demon specifically designed to torment humans after work hours.

  • Affably Evil: Mary tries really hard to be menacing, but she comes off more as friendly.
  • Harmless Villain: Wormhorn's job involves tormenting Milo and Lola about their insecurities. At best, it does nothing, and at worst, it just mildly offends them. She manages to succeed in tormenting them in the penultimate mission.
  • Keet: Energetic and very enthusiastic about her job.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: During the penultimate mission, Wormhorn finally breaks Lola and Milo by turning them against each other.

    Fela
The head of campus security at the Nastrond School of Physical Suffering and Mental Anguish located at Bobolyne Park. He's one of the two options from which Milo and Lola can get an invitation into Satan's party, but he needs help catching a human who snuck their way into Hell alive.

  • Butt-Monkey: If Milo isn't being this trope, chances are it's Fela.

    The Bartenders
Voiced by: Various people

Demons that mix and give you the drinks in Hell.

Humans

    In General
The souls of the dead who have been condemned to Hell for deeds done in life.

  • Affably Evil: Some humans are actually pretty nice despite having done horrible things in life.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Some humans will end up in Hell for the most absurd reasons. And many of these reasons are met with cruel — and often bizarre — punishments. For example, one lady's punishment is to have her tits eaten by snapping turtles, only to have them regrow larger in size, giving her intense back pain when she jogs... all for repeatedly misusing the express lane in grocery stores.
  • Wretched Hive: Since it's Hell, most of the humans down there are/were horrible people.

    Eliza
A soul in Hell. One of the three possible suspects for being the living human that has snuck into Hell in Fela's storyline.

  • Love Interest: To Milo. He can potentially organise a first date with her; however, as this game has a short timeframe, we do not see the relationship develop any further than light flirtation.

    Lynda Landon
A former rock star who sold her soul for a solo career, only to die in a parasailing accident. She's one of the two options from which Milo and Lola can get an invitation into Satan's party, but she needs to get out of her contract with Onoskelis for the night.

  • Broken Bird: Lynda's career has made her incredibly bitter, especially in the friends department due to the messy relationship with her former band.

    Roberto Spaghetti
A recently deceased man on trial for murdering carnival attendees in a fit of rage and then lighting a carousel on fire. Depending on your actions, if he is found not guilty, he can be reassigned to Heaven. Otherwise, he will be in Hell for eternity.

  • All for Nothing: Even if you condemn him to Hell, Roberto's role in Apollyon's intervention doesn't last long as Satan sets him on fire.
  • Gratuitous Italian: As he's an Italian born in Belgium, he'll occasionally pepper his sentences with Italian words.
  • Hidden Depths: It's later revealed that in life, he was the leading expert in alcoholics anonymous, which is why Apollyon wanted him to stay in Hell.
  • Nice Guy: Roberto is unfailingly polite despite his circumstances.

Mentioned Characters

    God
Yes, that God. He created everything and is considered to be the father of Satan and the Monarchs.

  • God Is Flawed: Combined with God Is Neutral. The stories that Sam tells Milo and Lola best paint him as a prideful being who ultimately does care about his creations and the stability of the universe.
