"I’ve been watching the Men’s Rights movement, such as it is, for some time, with a mixture of amusement, horror and disgust. It’s a movement that’s bad for everyone — for men, for women, for children, and probably even for my cat, though I haven’t yet quite worked out how. The best thing you can say about the Men’s Rights Movement is that it doesn’t, and hopefully never will, have anything near the impact on the world that feminism has had over the years. And this blog, in its own little way, hopes to help keep that way."

Meet David Futrelle—freelance writer, blogger, feminist, cat owner, and proud enemy of what he calls the New Misogyny, the online contingent of He-Man Women Haters united by their reactionary stances (to the point where misogyny and other forms of bigotry seem to be their only political ideology), their writings, and from his view of things the incredibly poor quality of said writings.

Thus, We Hunted The Mammoth (formerly Man Boobz), a website dedicated to finding the very worst of the Men's Rights Movement, pickup artist culture, and other examples of male entitlement with a side of ignorance and general stupidity he and his fans can dredge up. And mocking it.

While WHTM's original focus was "The New Misogyny, Tracked and Mocked", this changed after Donald Trump became President in 2016, as Futrelle discusses in this column.

"Trumpism, like all backlashes, is doomed to fail. Unfortunately, it is likely to do a tremendous amount of damage before it goes, not so gently, into that good night. In the meantime, I will do my best to make sense of the toxic stew of racism and misogyny at the heart of Trumpism, and to provide support for those fighting against it (or just trying to get by). And so I’ve changed the tagline of this blog from 'the new misogyny, tracked and mocked' to 'surviving the Trumpocalypse' to reflect this broader focus."

We Hunted the Tropes:

  • Angry White Man: A majority of the people Futrelle writes about. Occasionally he'll write about women and people of color having intolerant attitudes, averting Straw Feminist accusations.
  • Arch-Enemy: Has a few candidates:
    • Pickup artist Roosh Valizdeth.
    • A Voice For Men founder Paul Elam, although Futrelle is pretty lighthearted about it.
    • Andrew Anglin, who runs the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer.
    • "American nationalist" Conspiracy Theorist Mike Cernovich.
    • Since November 2016, the whole Trump Administration as well.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Many of Frutelle's posts expose the misogyny behind PUAs (Pick-Up Artists), like Roosh V or Heartiste.
  • Caustic Critic: Futrelle makes no secret of the fact that he despises the Men's Rights Movement, viewing it as a very thin coat of paint for what are almost invariably vicious, entitled sexists.
  • Cerebus Retcon: A real-life example in record time concerning the first "Unite The Right" rally and counterprotests. In the night before, the crowd or White Supremacists marched around wielding citronella-filled "Tiki torches" and looked like dorks. Futrelle has a humorous field day with this....Then the next afternoon came, two cops died in a helicopter crash and one White Supremacist rammed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one wasn't such a joke afterwards. The article had to be updated to reflect this.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Futrelle's default mode, which is shared by most of the commenters. When he stops ridiculing members of the "Manosphere", it's because one of them has said or done something too horrible to laugh at.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Many posts deal with a segment of the "Manosphere" so-called "Incels" (an abbreviation of "involuntary celibate"), many of which see themselves as this. This is despite the fact that they hate women for not giving them sex for being a decent person.
  • Entitled to Have You: Futrelle loathes this attitude. A lot of his subjects get this way over women who are overweight or have piercings and tattoos, with at least one anti-feminist outright stating that women only have "stewardship" over their own bodies, as opposed to having ownership.
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: Futrelle clearly enjoys writing about anti-feminists getting enraged whenever an action movie or series like Mad Max: Fury Road, Ghostbusters (2016), Doctor Who, or one of J. J. Abrams' Star Wars sequels casts a woman in the lead role. To a lesser extent racists, homophobes and people who demand everyone conform to their idea of attractiveness get this too.
  • Female Misogynist: These are often discussed as well, with Andrea "Judgy Bitch" Hardie being the most frequent example.
  • Haiku: This column discusses various Manospherians trying to write "High T-kus" (haikus with high testosterone). Several of the commenters mock them by writing their own haikus.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: One of the main objectives of the blog is to expose/make fun of these fellows.
  • Insane Troll Logic: The website covers heavy amounts of this.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: For all of his snark, Futrelle is usually pretty nice to the commenters on his blog, and he adores cats.
  • Misanthrope Supreme: The incel movement. Basically a bunch of guys convinced they will never have a relationship (typically due to some incredibly silly reason like some supposed physical flaw no one really notices) who have a burning hatred of "normies" i.e anyone who isn't a miserable asshole like they are.
  • Moral Myopia: Futrelle frequently points out how many of the misogynists he profiles frequently rail against any perceived slight against them by the entirety of the female gender but immediately attack women who speak up about crimes perpetuated against them by men.
    • In another example there are tons of people whining about how women are hypergamous (pretentious lingo for "they want a boyfriend/husband who is more attractive and/or wealthy than they are") while at the same time getting furious that they can't get supermodel-hot girlfriends even though they are (by their own admission) completely unappealing.
  • Poe's Law: All over the place as a lot of the people Futrelle writes about are so repugnant, so insane, so pathetic or all three that it's impossible to tell for sure if they are for real.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: The blog is about exposing misogynists, racists, homophobes, transphobes, and any mixture of the aforementioned.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Frutelle considers sexual assault a Moral Event Horizon. Posts dealing with the topic are usually the most serious in tone.
  • Sarcasm Failure: Happens when one of the misogynists quoted is particularly vile.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Futrelle has been known to write entire articles in this style when he comes across an idea that's poorly conceived and full of contradictions.
  • Serious Business: It’s very clear Futrelle views what he does as this and doesn’t consider MRA’s be your typical collection of goofy idiots who take their politics way too seriously.
  • Slave Brand: A Discussed Trope in this article, which is about an incel Redditor's claim that "Tattoos on women are a 'mark of slavery' showing that their bodies are owned by the tattoo artist". Various commenters write about the history of the trope and apply Fridge Logic; one woman inverts the trope when she says that, after surviving Domestic Abuse and Self-Harm, she got tattooed because "It was my way of reclaiming my body as my own."
  • Tautological Templar: Averted. Futrelle's comments policy calls for everyone to act civil to each other, regardless of their opinions. This is obviously to encourage his followers to rise above the attitudes seen among MRAs.
  • Those Wacky Nazis: Neo-Nazis, "White Nationalists", the Ku Klux Klan, and similar hate groups are also discussed from time to time, especially since the infamous "Unite the Right" rally.
  • You Are Fat: Futrelle frequently writes about people whose only defense is to make fun of their enemies' appearance. Irony abounds as he is quite the hefty fellow—but then, so are many of the Manospherians making these criticisms.
  • You Keep Using That Word:
    • Some of the people Futrelle details who combine their misogyny with racism often use the term "cuckold" (or "cuck") to describe anyone who doesn't agree with their racist and sexist views, while not really understanding the whole meaning and history of the term. Naturally, Futrelle has called this nonsensical.
    • There's also the racial slur "dindu" note  which is used to accuse black people of committing crimes. Worth noting is how a lot of the people Futrelle criticizes commit a lot of misdeeds themselves, but cry oppression when faced with any kind of punishment.
