  • Carl Wheezer from The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius yells this in the episode "Jimmy for President" after the umpteenth time someone knocks on his door to ask him to vote for them.
  • Adventure Time:
    • This exchange when Jake rejects the rather Volatile Flame Princess.
      Jake (pretending to be Finn): [after learning she's evil and psycho] Y'know, On Second Thought, we're not really each other's types...
      Flame Princess: ...We're... what?
      Jake (pretending to be Finn): I changed my mind. I don't like you.
      Flame Princess: You..... WHAT?!?!?!
    • Also Jake's reaction to the news that she's evil.
    • From "Too Young":
      Princess Bubblegum: Yo, EARL!
      Lemongrab: WHAAAT?!
      Princess Bubblegum: HEY- you're FIRED, 'ya BUTT!

  • The Amazing World of Gumball: Anais's response in "The Responsible" to finding out her brothers are going to babysit her. Gumball and Anais in "The Disaster", when Richard announced that he and Nicole are getting a divorce thanks to Rob taking the Parental Filter off of them.
  • In Amphibia This gets quickly cemented (by other characters) as Hop Pop's Catchphrase, and it even lands him a role in a commercial when he briefly visits Earth.
  • Archer: Malory dishes out Big "WHAT?!"'s when she's irate.
  • In "Is There a Doctor in the House?" from Arthur, this is Arthur's reaction in an Imagine Spot when D.W. tells him that she sent their baby sister Kate to an orphanage. D.W. points out that they just couldn't take care of her and that she deserves to be in a place that can change her diapers.
  • Bob's Burgers: When Linda finds out the kids forged her signature for a fake independent study to avoid gym class, she lets loose with an "Independent WHAAAAAAAAAAAAA--??"
  • Played with in the third episode of Clone High. Gandhi is attempting to film a cheesy Buddy Cop movie, but George Washington Carver is too much of a straight laced nerd to really nail his lines:
    Carver: [flatly] Say what.
    Gandhi: Cut! No, no, no, man! You're makin' me fall asleep! To death, bro! Okay, the line is: [high pitched, manner similar to Chris Tucker] "Say WHAAAT?!"
    Carver: [flatly, again] Say what.
    Gandhi: Say WHAAAT?!
    Carver: [flatly, once again] Say what.
    Gandhi: Say...
    Carver: Say.
    Gandhi: ...WHAAAT?!
    Carver: What.
    Gandhi: Say WHAAAT?!
    Carver: Gandhi! This character is not me!
    Gandhi: Say WHAAAT?!
    Carver: STOP IT!
  • In the Codename: Kids Next Door episode "Operation: M.U.N.C.H.I.E.S.", upon learning of Knightbrace's intention to destroy the last box of Rainbow Munchies, Sector V reacts with a simultaneous "WHAT?!" followed by the villains reacting likewise. Except for Toiletnator, who cries out in pain over having been run over.
  • Courage the Cowardly Dog: From "Cajun Granny Stew", when Cajun Fox is reading the ingredient list for said episode's titular stew:
    Cajun Fox: ...and one cute little old Granny...WHAAAAAAT?!? I ain't got one of them!
  • The Cuphead Show!: In "Sweater Luck Next Time", Mugman shouts out "You... WHAAAAAAT?!" when Cuphead tells him that he had taken off the protective invisible sweater back home earlier after giving Mugman the funnel cake.
  • Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines: In "Sky-Hi I.Q.," Dick Dastardly utters a defiant "What??!!" when efficiency expert I.B. Smartly reassigns command of the Vulture Squadron to Muttley.
  • In The Dragon Prince, an innocent Ezran gets a little confused after Callum kisses Rayla after he used a breathing spell.
    Ezran: (confused) Hey, that isn't part of the spell!
    Callum: Oh... Uh, yeah. So you've been gone for a while, and uh now this is a thing. So... (smiles awkwardly while Rayla hides her face in embarressment)
    Ezran: What? ...WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-
  • The Dreamstone:
    • One episode features the main villain, Zordrak, going to renew his evil powers, but on his way back to his lair, an incident occurs which results in him becoming good. Needless to say whilst he is in this good state and Urpgor tells him they have stolen the Dreamstone, Zordrak makes him return it 'with flowers and an apology'. A little later, a piece of rock falls on his head, and returns him to his normal state of mind. At the same time, Urpgor tells him that he returned the Dreamstone to the heroes. Which results in:
      Zordrak: YOU...DIDDDD...WWWHHHHHHHATTTTTTTT?!?!
    • Another version occurs in the episode "Blob's Incredible Plan", when Zordrak finds out that Blob, Frizz and Nug stole Urpgor's Mole-Mobile:
      Zordrak: They did WWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTT????????!!!!!!!!
  • Evil Con Carne: In "Son of Evil", Hector yells this when he learns his son fights for truth and justice.
  • Family Guy:
    • This seems to be Chris's catchphrase: "WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA?!"
    • In one episode, he and Peter are having a conversation in Spanish, which ends with him letting out a Big "QUE?!" instead.
    • Also, Meg in the episode "Dial Meg for Murder", when Joe arrests her fugitive boyfriend:
      Meg: If you take him to jail, you have to take me too!
      Joe: I know, that's the plan. You're under arrest for harboring an escaped convict.
      Meg: Oh, well, that's only fair, because, after all, I did hide him from the WHAAAA?!
    • Stewie's response to the announcement of a new baby brother in "Emission Impossible":
      Stewie: A new baby? How wonderful. Call me when Kojak starts. (beat) WHAT?!?!
    • Also Stewie's response to Brian inviting Lauren Conrad to the Griffin house for dinner in "We Love You Conrad":
      Stewie: So, did you break up with Lauren?
      Brian: No, I didn't. As a matter of fact, she's coming over for dinner tonight.
      Stewie: Say WHAAAAAAAT?!
  • Futurama:
    • One episode features a Cartridge Unit, a robot who communicates by sticking labelled cartridges in a slot and spewing a prerecorded message. One of them is a "What?!" cartridge:
      Bender: The whole world must learn of our peaceful ways... by force!
      Cartridge Unit: [puts in "What?!" cartridge] What?!
      Bender: We're going back to civilization to wage war on technology!
      Cartridge Unit: [pulls out then re-inserts the cartridge] What?!
    • During the episode "Insane in the Mainframe" Fry meets Malfunctioning Eddy when he's admitted to the robot insane asylum who explodes when he's surprised by something.
      Malfunctioning Eddy: Pleased to meet you.
      Fry: Actually we've met once before.
      Malfunctioning Eddy: WHA-!? (explosion).
    • "Crimes of the Hot" had a microphone robot exclaim this when Bender tells his pet turtle that the robot party they're at is actually a ruse by Nixon to destroy all robots when they are all one place. Cue Mass "Oh, Crap!"
  • In an episode of Gargoyles, Lexington is trying to figure out where the sword Excalibur is hidden. The clan is in Manhattan, and Lex suddenly figures out "Brooklyn!" His clanmate with the exact same name blurts out an annoyed, "WHAAAAT?!"
  • Gravity Falls gives us an epic one in "Weirdmageddon 2: Escape from Reality", delivered by Bill Cipher upon noticing that Gravity Falls is surrounded by a force field bubble that prevents him and his hench-maniacs from leaving the area and going out into the world they aim to conquer.
    • Again in the following episode (and Grand Finale), when Bill realizes he's been duped and trapped inside of Stan's mind while Ford erases him (and Stan's memories), thereby killing him.
  • Hey Arnold!: In "Spelling Bee", Big Bob reacts this way when Helga deliberately misspells a word she knew by heart, in order to spite her dad for trying to bribe Arnold.
  • The Jetsons:
    • In Jetsons: The Movie, George does this when his family asks him to close down the orbiting asteroid plant. Bonus points for having it echo.
      George: You want me to do WHAT??
    • Happens again a little later when George actually refuses an order from Mr. Spacely.
      Spacely: Stay away from this button! That's an order!
      George: NO... SIR... MR.... SPACELY!
      Spacely: WHAT?!
      George: I said, "No sir, Mr. Spacely!" Boy, that felt good.
  • In the Looney Tunes short High Diving Hare, Yosemite Sam reacts this way while attending a high-diving act, as Bugs informs the audience that the main star of said act can't make it due to a storm.
    • In "Porky Pig's Feat," after he and Daffy send the hotel manager down a flight of spiraling stairs:
    Daffy: (whispering) I guess we showed that overstuffed tur—
    Manager: (suddenly in front of him) WHAT??!!!
  • The Magic School Bus: In "The Magic School Bus for Lunch", the class gives this reaction when Ms. Frizzle suggests that the class—inside of Arnold's large intestine—"join the rest of the waste products and finish the trip". Considering what this entails, their reaction is completely justified.
  • In Miraculous Ladybug, Adrien is Playing Cyrano for Nino, who is smitten with Marinette, but Cannot Spit It Out, and Alya is doing the same for Marinette, who believes that she is about to date Adrien. When Adrien pushes Nino to tell Marinette about his crush on her, he panics and blurts out Alya's name instead, prompting a three-way one of these.
    Marinette: Uhh, can't wait to hear a-about this lucky girl! Heh.
    Nino: Oh... yeah!
    Adrien: [via earpiece] Tell her 'it's you'!
    Nino: It's yoooouuuuuuuuuuuu-r best friend, Alya!
    Adrien: [confused] What?!
    Alya: [shocked] WHAT?!
    Marinette: [elated] WHAT?!
  • Sherman from Mr. Peabody & Sherman delivers this when Penny calls King Tut her boyfriend.
  • My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic:
    • Three in quick succession from "Boast Busters". The first comes from Twilight when Snips tells her that he and Snails brought an Ursa to Ponyville. Seconds later, Snips and Snails each have one when Trixie confesses that she never defeated an Ursa Major.
    • Twilight Sparkle has one of these near the end of "Feeling Pinkie Keen", on finding out an attack by a hydra wasn't the "doozy" predicted by Pinkie Pie's "Pinkie Sense".
      Twilight: Uh... but I... WHAT?! The hydra wasn't the doozy? How could it not be the doozy? What could be doozier than that?!
    • In "Sisterhooves Social", Rarity, Applejack, and Apple Bloom all let out Big Whats in quick succession when Sweetie Belle disowns Rarity as her sister in favor of Applejack.
    • In "Crusaders of the Lost Mark", Diamond Tiara delivers a very loud and furious one when she realizes she only received one vote in her entire campaign for class president against Pipsqueak, who won.
  • In My Life as a Teenage Robot in the episode “The Boy Who Cried Robot". After Jenny has her named called so many times by Tuck, eventually Brad says her name and she screams a very powerful one of these out. Which blasts him and his ice cream cone into a skewed position.
  • Blossom utters a loud, angry "WHAT??!" in The Powerpuff Girls episode "Him Diddle Riddle" when her SAT score comes up a measly 10. At the end of the episode, the girls manage a weak "Say what?" when they find out that as a penalty for not solving all of Him's riddles, the Professor has to pay... full price for a pancake breakfast.
  • Punky Brewster impersonates Margaux (whose face got turned into a glomley face, episode "Pretty Ugly"). When Punky is told that Margaux is about to wring Glomer's neck:
    Cherie: You-know-who and what's-her-name are in the kitchen.
    Punky: WHAT??!!
  • In Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, when Randy is fighting Julian's Evil Doppelgänger, who he thinks is just regular Julian, he tells him that "he can't do this because he isn't evil", to which Evil Julian replies that he isn't Julian, causing Randy to let out a big "Whaaaaaaaaaaat?!" which makes his pupils enlarge.
  • In ReBoot, Al of Al's Diner is never seen onscreen (except the one time he was tied up), and is heard only when other people talk to him. The only thing he ever responds with is "WHAT?". Unlike most examples, Al's "WHAT?!"s are implied to be because he's got hearing problems.
  • Leonardo has this reaction (following an equally big "...") when Splinter reveals his former relationship with spider yokai Big Mama in the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles episode "Many Unhappy Returns".
  • Rocket Power: In "Hurricane Maurice", Otto and Twister sneak out of the shelter in the early morning during a hurricane to find Twister's missing video camera. When Reggie wakes up her father to tell him what happened, Ray's "WHAT?!" is so loud that it wakes up everyone in the shelter.
  • Rugrats: In "I Remember Melville", Chuckie leaves his pet bug Melville with Tommy, Phil and Lil. They have this conversation when he returns...
    Chuckie: So, anything exciting happen while I was gone?
    Tommy: Mmm, nothing much.
    Lil: Phil found a piece of gum under a rock.
    Chuckie: Yeah?
    Tommy: And Lil ate another mud pie.
    Chuckie: Neat.
    Phil: And... Oh, yeah. Your bug died.
    Chuckie: WHAT?! Melville! Melville!
  • The Simpsons:
    • Marge frequently lets these out, usually in response to the latest insane thing Homer has said or done.
    • Subverted when Bart wants to divorce his parents. Upon hearing what Bart wants, the Blue Haired Lawyer exclaims, "You whaaaaaa?" when in fact he was calling for his secretary, Uwa.
    • Also subverted in this scene, where Marge has just accepted a job with the police. Cut to the exterior of the Simpsons' house:
      Homer: You did WHAT?!
      [beat, cut to inside house]
      Bart: I borrowed your nail clippers. What's the big deal?
      Homer: Nothing. I'm just a bit edgy since your mother became a cop.
    • Frequently played straight with Moe, who says it in a way similar to Chris of Family Guy.
  • South Park:
    • Kyle's mom, when outraged, uses the catch phrase "What What WHAAAAT?"
    • And Ms. Crabtree, the cranky bus driver, will scream "WHAT DID YOU SAY?!" when one of the boys makes fun of her.
    • In "Pre-School", Kenny has one of these when Stan tells him that a bully from preschool is being released from juvenile hall.
    • The Mayor once manages a both flat and big What:
      Stan: Dude, why should we want gay people to get out of town?
      Cartman: Oh... They think they meant gay fags.
      Kyle: Oh... That's not really nice mayor. Just because a person is gay doesn't mean he's a fag!
      Mayor: ... What?!
    • Stan in "The Return of Chef" when a Brainwashed and Crazy Chef asks the boys to make sweet love to him.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants:
    • In "Imitation Krabs", Plankton, disguised as Mr. Krabs, does this when attempting to get the Krabby Patty secret formula. He has to go through a tedious ritual, but SpongeBob tells him that it's against the rules to tell anyone the formula. Bizarrely enough, this also doubles as a Flat "What"; Plankton's disguise is that of a robot with a very monotonous voice.
    • In "Welcome to the Chum Bucket", Plankton is trying to get robot SpongeBob to make him a Krabby Patty, but Spongebob refuses, causing Plankton to let out an enraged, "What? WHAAATTT?!?!"
    • In "Waiting", as SpongeBob is waiting by his mailbox for the arrival of the Kelpo toy he sent an offer for, Patrick comes over after visiting the Krusty Krab; SpongeBob responds by angrily screaming, "WHAAAAAAAT!!?! WHAT DO YOU WANT!!?!"
    • One episode has SpongeBob and Patrick telling the truth about the Krabby Patty secret formula to Mr. Krabs, saying that the two stole the secret formula which the latter yells to them "'''You did WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT???".
  • At the end of the first season of Star vs. the Forces of Evil, Star and Marco both have this reaction to Toffee's demand that Star destroy her wand in exchange for Marco's life.
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars:
    • "Carnage of Krell": Rex and Dogma both have this reaction (though not at the same time) after discovering that the "disguised Umbarans" they've been fighting are actually other clones.
    • "The Bad Batch": Admiral Trench has this form of Oh, Crap! reaction when told that the clone strike team who breached the Separatists' cyber center on Anaxes made a transmission to Skako Minor, which is where the thought-dead ARC trooper Echo is being held as a stolen Republic strategy algorithm is being extracted from him.
  • Steven Universe:
    • "A Single Pale Rose" ends on Amethyst letting out a huge one when she, Garnet, and Steven discover that Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond were the same person.
    • "Escapism": Bismuth has a silent one when she sees the Watermelon Steven being controlled by Steven. Obviously, no one had yet told her that Steven can do that.
  • Storm Hawks: In "Fire and Ice", Repton responds this way when Lugey tells him that he threw an entire crate full of Lava Crystals into an active volcano vent (the crystals were only meant to be dropped into the vent one at a time to thaw the terra they're on, with throwing them all in at once triggering a full-blown volcanic eruption).
  • In the Teen Titans Go! episode "Staff Meeting", when Starfire blurts out that she and the other Titans broke Robin's staff, he lets one of these out as his mouth flips open, then a giant "WHAT" drops down between the halves of his head and he crushes it as they snap shut.
  • Two Pepe Le Pew Warner Brothers cartoons, 'Past Perfumance' and 'Who Scent You?', has this trope in the form of "Le What?!".
  • The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald: In "Birthday World", the "It's a Birthday Day" musical number has Hamburglar exclaim "What?" when informed over the phone that it's Ronald McDonald's birthday, as he had neglected to get Ronald a present in time.
  • We Bare Bears: In "Googs" when Grizzly, Ice Bear and Panda are still in the Googs simulation in the rocket in which starts to land in the sun. Grizz exclaims with WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!!
