The Vampire Diaries

  • Klaus Mikaelson as either a Big Bad or The Heavy in the first three seasons. Although most of the enemies they faced were his enemies as well, they had ideas of how to go about opposing him that were incompatible with the interests of the main cast. Upon Silas' introduction in the fourth season, Klaus is gradually stripped of the Big Bad title.
  • Season One has Katherine Pierce and the Founders' Council, led by Mayor Richard Lockwood. However, the more direct threat is John Gilbert, who acts as the Dragon-in-Chief and The Heavy to both the Council and Katherine respectively.
  • Season Two starts with Katherine, but halfway through it, Klaus officially steps up to the Big Bad title.
  • Season Three has Klaus' mother Esther and Alaric, who developed a psychotic alter ego. While they set out to destroy Klaus, their plans put the whole vampire race and much of the cast in danger, that they end up becoming the bigger threat than Klaus
  • Season Four has Silas, who Klaus of all people and uses Atticus Shane as The Dragon before that.
  • Season Five has a Big Bad Ensemble of Silas, Qetsiyah, Wes Maxfield, and Katherine. However, as of Episode Fifteen, all four of them are dead, leaving Markos to step up as the Big Bad and Final Boss.
  • Season Six has Malachai "Kai" Parker, with the Gemini Coven who opposed Markos and the Travelers serving as the Greater-Scope Villain due to their twin-merging ritual that led to Kai's birth and subsequent murderous resentment of his siblings.
  • Season Seven has Julian, The Man Behind the Man for the Heretics and the Greater-Scope Villain for Rayna Cruz, aka the Huntress, who serves as the Final Boss.
  • Season Eight has Arcadius aka Cade, the world's first psychic and the creator and ruler of Hell, with the Sirens and later Ripper Stefan and emotionless Damon as his Co-Dragons. However, Katherine steps up to the plate after his defeat, serving as the Final Boss of the entire series.

The Originals

  • Season One has a Big Bad Ensemble, with Genevieve, her Dragon-in-Chief Monique Deveraux, Céleste Dubois, and Franscesca Guerra. The last few minutes of the season reveal that Esther is the mastermind behind Genevieve.
  • Season Two has Dahlia, who initially seems to only be the Greater-Scope Villain whom Esther is trying to thwart.
  • Season Three has Lucien Castle, the first of Klaus' sire line, initially in an alliance with Disc-One Final Boss Tristan de Martel, deliberately manipulating a prophecy that says the Mikaelson's will fall within the year in order to get revenge. He does this by using the Original Vampire spell to turn himself into "the Beast" a creature that can even kill an Original. However he is stripped of his power and killed in the third to last episode. Instead Marcel, striking by grief over the Original's leaving Davina to the hands of the witch ancestors, takes the same concoction as Lucien and turns himself into the Beast thus becoming the prophesied downfall of the Originals and Final Boss of the season.
  • Season Four has The Hollow the spirit of an ancient witch called Inadu who created the werewolf curse in her dying moments and returns to New Orleans to gather a cult of followers with the intend on resurrecting herself via the sacrifice of a powerful immortal. In the back half of the season it is revealed that she is also targeting Hope Mikaelson, the last of the Labonair bloodline, because as the Labonair's are descendants of the original tribe that killed her only their blood is powerful enough to stop her.
  • Season Five has two major villainous factions; the first is the Nightwalker organization, a group of purist vampires who believe that werewolves and Hybrids are abominations who seek to drive them out of New Orleans and are initially led by Greta Sienna, who acts as the Disc-One Final Boss, and later by Emmett. The second villainous force is the remnants of the Hollow's magic which was divided into the four vampire Mikaelson's at the end of the previous season which keeps the family separated as, if they are ever together, catastrophe could occur for Hope and New Orleans. Near the end of the season Hope absorbs the Hollow fragments into herself and uses its power to wipe out the Nightwalkers at the end of the tenth episode. Unfortunately the magic begins killing Hope leading Klaus to find a way to transfer it into himself so that he can kill himself and end the threat once and for all making the Hollow the Final Boss of the series.

Legacies

  • Malivore was created to rid the world of monsters but was imprisoned and now seeks to return. It is the father of Hope's love interest, Landon, and seeks to take over his body. Though, each season has another villain who does the heavy lifting.
    • Season One has a Big Bad Ensemble. There is Triad Industries, which is led by MG's mother Veronica Greasley. There's also Ryan Clarke, who at first seems to simply be Triad's Dragon-in-Chief, before revealed to be Malivore's first created son and Landon's older brother, who seeks to revive his father and is sending monsters to attack the school on his behalf.
    • Season Two has the Necromancer, who kills Clarke and seeks to reclaim his power of necromancy. Kai Parker joins forces with him for two episodes when the Saltzmans are trapped in the prison world. The last four episodes introduce Dark Josie, an evil personality of Josie's, who seeks to speed up the merge, teams up with the Necromancer, and acts as the Final Boss of the season.
  • Season Three sees Malivore take a more active role, trying and eventually succeeding in taking over Landon's body. Initially his main focus is finding a way to kill Hope as being the Tribrid makes her his Woman of Kryptonite. However, an attempt to extract him from Landon's body leads Malivore to discover that he can infect and control others with his essence, his plans evolving into an Assimilation Plot to Take Over the World. Fortunately his plans are halted in its infancy when Hope becomes a full Tribrid and finally destroys Malivore for good.
  • In the fourth season, following Malivore's death early on, Hope loses her humanity upon becoming the tribrid. Triad Industries steps back into the fray, now led by Aurora DeMartel; seeking Revenge by Proxy on Hope for Klaus' actions. However, Hope almost immediately dismantles Aurora's threat, after which the threat of Ancient gods returning to Earth overshadow Aurora completely. The father of the gods — nicknamed "Ken" — enters the scene, becoming the ultimate threat of the season, relegates Aurora to his right hand, causing much of the strife in the season, and the True Final Boss of the series.
