• When Farmer McDonough barges into the school and again pulls the gun at Josh to force him to marry Betsy, Emma is having none of it, immediately stepping in to disarm the farmer and tell him off for coercing a man into marrying his daughter, which she considers to show that he doesn't value Betsy enough. The farmer is reduced to meekly asking if he can have his gun back, to which Emma replies that not until he has learned his lesson, making him finally back off and leave.
• Emma reveals that Carson is her son not her brother. When Mildred says "I knew that child was a bastard", Carson responds "You're a bastard!".
