  • Meta: there are very few folk songs that manage to be simultaneously as sprawling, sad, poetic and heartfelt as "The Trapeze Swinger", which is arguably Sam Beam's masterpiece in songwriting. It's essentially a ten-minute Narrative Poem about love, death, the afterlife, redemption and growing up, but it's so effortlessly lyrical that you barely notice how long it is. Many a fan has choked up at the last few lines, where the central metaphor of the trapeze artist finally comes full circle.
