Rick and Morty

Anvilicious in this series.
  • "Mortynight Run" lays it on pretty thick in conveying how one should not necessarily act in a situation until they have a clear understanding of what the situation actually is, because things can end up a whole lot worse. This is demonstrated largely by the insane death toll brought upon by Morty's attempt to save a life, an act that is utterly meaningless as Morty himself ends up killing the gas life-form anyway to prevent Fart from killing off all carbon-based life forms.
  • Seasons three and four have a running theme that you can try to run from the consequences of your actions, whether using science fiction or your own flaws, but they will come back to bite you. Either they will literally show up and stare you in the face, or you will be eaten alive by the guilt and try to make things right. And yes, this includes Rick, the smartest guy in the universe. In "The ABC's of Beth" Beth learns that, contrary to her Self-Serving Memory, she abandoned her best friend to starve in the childproof fantasy world that Rick made for her and feels guilty even after helping Rick clone him to save his father from death row. When Rick offers to clone her so she can decide if she wants to stay or leave and find out who she is it's revealed in the season 4 finale "Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri" that she asked him to decide whether or not to clone her and which daughter would stay. Rick decides to clone Beth but refuses to confirm or even allow himself to know which Beth is the original, and sends one into space while the other decides to become a better mom to her kids. This wouldn't be a problem if he hadn't said he would kill the clone if she ever became self-aware. This decision ends up hurting both of them: Space Beth returns to kill Rick and Earth Beth after she finds a bomb implanted in her neck courtesy of Rick, and the women suffer an identity crisis as the Federation takes them both as prisoners. Rick realizes he's a terrible father when the Beths reconcile and leave Rick, since he threatened to kill them both for being the clone.
  • Outside of the above arc, "The Vat of Acid Episode" gives us Rick supposedly giving Morty a do-over remote that is actually allowing him to Kill and Replace his parallel selves when he makes terrible choices. Rick gloats that Morty amassed a lot of consequences when he thought there would be none, much to Morty's horror. Though, this loses some of its impact when you remember that in all of the cases above, this came about from characters genuine trying to escape consequences, while in this case, it was really just Rick being a dick, and the horrifying consequences could probably have been entirely avoided if Rick didn't decide to screw over Morty and be such a Jackass Genie.
  • In "Pickle Rick", Dr. Wong gives a gentle but accurate Kirk Summation to Rick that his family needs to put in the work to repair itself. The whole summation is about three minutes long, and is quite emphatic about how Rick is destroying his family with his prioritizing genius over the boring maintenance that comes with healthy love. She says sooner or later everyone has to choose if they want to put in the work or die. Season 3 ends with Beth and Jerry reconciling, deciding to put in the work to repair their relationship, and they go to visit Dr. Wong regularly in seasons 4 and 5.
