Despite the action-orientated premise and plot, the central theme of the story is actually [[RomanceArc Naruto and Hinata's relationship]] and the movie serves as the story of how they became the main OfficialCouple in the end.

* TheDogBitesBack: Or, more accurately, [[spoiler:she gouges her sister's eyes out of your eyesockets]]. Given that Toneri kidnaps her sister, removes her eyes, almost kills the man she loves, [[spoiler: forces her into a position where she had to break the heart of the man she truly loves, cruelly turns her into one of his puppets, and stuffs her into a cage to watch as he tries to kill the man she loves again, Hinata's]] extreme reaction is definitely understandable.

** [[spoiler:As Hinata walks into Toneri's arms, the cold look she gives to Naruto after she "rejects" him turns into a look of sadness.]]

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: As the canonical {{Interquel}} between the last two chapters of the manga, in this movie it is revealed that [[WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove Naruto does not completely understand the concept of romantic love]], thinking that Hinata's love for him was like his love of ramen. When you consider the fact that Naruto never had the unconditional affection that most people had with their families due to being both an orphan and the village pariah for most of his childhood, [[FridgeBrilliance it actually makes a lot of sense]]. Naruto would be starved for any sort of affection, and would have a hard time differentiating them and takes a great amount of time, love and patience to heal. Luckily, [[OneTrueLove Hinata]] has that in spades for Naruto.

Although for people who read the ending of the manga, this is a ForegoneConclusion: They will.

** A line delivered by Sakura in ''[[LightNovel/ShikamaruHidenACloudDriftingInSilentDarkness Shikamaru Hiden]]'' reveals that Naruto and Hinata have been hanging out together a lot before the Moon Mission--chronologically, the novel takes place a few months ''before'' the events that transpire in this movie. This confirms that Naruto and Hinata developed a closer friendship after the Fourth Shinobi World War ended. It just took the events of this movie for Naruto to realize that Hinata didn't see him as just a friend, and ultimately for him to realize that he didn't see her as just a friend either. The fact that Sakura was the one who noticed and pointed out their growing relationship [[FridgeBrilliance actually explains why]] she became such an avid Naruto/Hinata shipper in this movie.

** In ''[[LightNovel/SakuraHidenThoughtsofLoveRidingUponaSpringBreeze Sakura Hiden]]'', we learn that [[spoiler:Naruto and Hinata had been teased by older ninja and former classmates after the news of them returning from the moon as an OfficialCouple spread like wildfire.]]

* ShipSinking: WordOfGod even states that this movie is not only the story of how Naruto and Hinata got together, but it is the story of how Naruto and Sakura parted ways, even though this already happened in Chapter 469.

* PyrrhicVillainy: Did Toneri manage to steal Hanabi's eyes? Yes. Did he manage to [[spoiler:get Hinata into becoming his bride]]? Yes. Did he trounce Naruto as adding injury to insult to his (Naruto's) LoveConfession? Yes. Does all of this mean that he gets final victory? Nope. [[spoiler:In fact, the fallout of all of his initial successes lay the groundwork to his ultimate defeat]].
** This is underscored in the scene where [[spoiler:Naruto manages to sever Toneri's hold over Hinata. Toneri pulls Hinata back, uses a strong jutsu to push Naruto against a wall, and then attempts to reestablish control, only for the strain of having his Tenseigan mature to make him reel in pain giving Hinata an opportunity to reunite with Naruto and the two of them to destroy the Tenseigan Core orb]].

The film was released in theaters in Japan on December 6, 2014

** The film's ending credits shows [[spoiler:Naruto and Hinata's wedding]], which may give some people the idea that [[spoiler:they get married immediately after defeating Toneri]] in a case of FourthDateMarriage. However, Creator/MasashiKishimoto created a two-page mini-story for a databook released with the movie that shows [[spoiler:Naruto and Hinata's first date]], explicitly stating that it takes place after the events of the film and implying they built up their romantic relationship.

** [[https://i.imgur.com/VtyGj66.jpg The Movie's Blu-Ray cover]] shows [[spoiler:Naruto and Hinata being [[ShipperOnDeck congratulated by their friends]] for ''finally'' becoming an OfficialCouple after they and the rest of the team return to Konoha.]]

* BrickJoke: Hanabi warns Hinata that she should eat something because she doesn't want her stomach to growl when she is confessing to Naruto. When she encounters Naruto later as she is about to give him the red scarf she made, her stomach growls loudly effectively ruining the moment.
* BridalCarry: Naruto carries Hinata like in his arms a couple of times in the movie's climax. Incidentally, she is wearing a bridal gown at the time. Romantic conotations are certainly intended.

** From the Introduction arc: [[LovingAShadow Naruto having a crush on Sakura because she liked Sasuke]] was implied in Chapter 3.
