Koyuki doesn't want them to put the 'slice' in his Slice of Life.

A Destructive God Sits Next to Me (Boku no Tonari ni Ankoku Hakaishin ga Imasu) is a comedy Shōjo manga by Arata Aki that was serialized in Comic Gene from 2013 to 2020. It was adapted into a 12 episode anime by EMT Squared for the Winter 2020 season.

The series follows the misadventures of Seri Koyuki, a catlike high schooler who just wants to be left to study in peace but keeps getting annoyed by his classmate, Kabuto Hanadori, who claims to be the reincarnation of a knight sworn to defend the world from some unspecified evil, and insists Koyuki is the reincarnation of his former partner.

A Destructive God Sits Next to Me provides examples of:

  • Amusing Injuries: All over the place, but some real ones too. For a supposedly 'nerdy' student, Koyuki is pretty keen to dish them out.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Hanadori's Destructive God persona is called Miguel.
  • Genki Boy: Koyuki. Or, he is when Hanadori et al aren't bothering him.
  • Hidden Depths: One running gag involves Koyuki discovering that Hanadori has quite a few of these.
Koyuki: Since when were you so woke?!
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While Handori and the others can bring out the worst in Koyuki, the latter does care about them and, even when it finally gives him the peace he wants, he can worry when they aren't bothering him and wonder if something's wrong.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Koyuki can be something of a Jerkass toward Hanadori, sometimes to the point of physically assaulting him, it's hard to blame him seeing as Hanadori, albeit while not being aware of it, is inducing a great deal stress in him that has a severe effect on his personal life, with Tsukimiya and the fact that he's a Weirdness Magnet not helping his temper.
  • Manchild: When he's dropping the "Hero of another world possessed by a demon" act, Hanadori really emphasizes the "middle-school" part of "middle-schooler syndrome", acting like an excitable child who gets easily upset when feeling personally attacked, with his attachment to Koyuki being akin to how a child would act towards their best friend.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Tsukimiya, hands down. While Hanadori can annoy Koyuki just fine of his own, Tsukimiya is more than happy to orchestrate and escalate events so that they'll annoy him even more for his own amusement. In fact, it's his fault that Hanadori pesters Koyuki so much to begin with, having manipulated him into becoming a Chuunibyou since grade school and then, upon entering high school, telling him that Koyuki was his friend in a past life named Gestober, essentially kickstarting the entire plot for the sake of entertaining himself.
  • Nice Girl: Sumiso is probably the only bright part of Koyuki's life, being the only character shown to not go out of their way to push his buttons and being quick to forgive for a misunderstanding after he explains himself.
  • No Name Given: The boys' teacher and Koyuki's friend from a neighboring class aren't named.
  • Ridiculously Cute Critter: Cerberus, Hanadori's incredibly tiny puppy to whom he gives matching accessories.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Being a Chuunibyou might make you think that Hanadori has terrible academic skill, but he actually scores higher than Koyukinote .
  • Stalker with a Crush: Shikimi Tokimune to Hanadori and Suzuran Mogami to Tsukimiya.
  • Straight Man: Koyuki. It's noted by multiple characters that whenever something stupid or ridiculous happens, he can't help but call out how stupid or ridiculous it is. This trait annoys him to the point that he thinks people try to rile him up for the sake of him snarking at it, and he tries to avoid responding to anything as a result. Easier said than done.
  • Swiss-Army Tears: Inverted. When Hanadori is crying over Koyuki possibly dying one of his tears falls on Koyuki’s face causing his finger to twitch. Tsukimiya sees this and explains to hanadori that his tears may wake him up, as it happens in anime and stories, then encouraged him to let more drop on his face. This obviously does not work much to the chagrin of Koyuki’s spirit.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Tuna for Koyuki. Specifically in the form of tuna flavored drinks and ice cream.
  • Unfazed Everyman: What Koyuki tries to be. And sometimes even succeeds, for a minute.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: When Hanadori gets drunk on amazake during their New Year shrine visit he ends his drunken rampage by vomiting on Koyuki offscreen.
