Top Boy touches on a lot of topics of masculinity especially between different ages of men from young boys such as Ra'Nell, to adults such as Dushane.

The very nature of a lot of the characters especially the ones who grew up without father figures is explored, both through subtext and . Dushane and his brother Chris took their father’s absence from their lives very differently, for Chris it meant he had to work hard to make his own way and stay out of trouble, but for Dushane it meant that life was already against him so what else would there be but to aim to turn the downtrodden aspect of his life into an empire.
