Analysis / NEO: The World Ends with You

  • As in the first game, thirteen of the game's clothing brands fit an Eastern Zodiac theme, either through their name, themes, or iconography. Some of the old brands remain, but many have been swapped out.
    • Top O' Topo represents the Rat. "Topo" is the Italian word for "Mouse".
    • Joli bécot represents the Ox. The name is French for "Great Kiss", which doesn't immediately point to an animal theme. However, bull symbolism appears in several of its pins. Additionally, the general style of the brand is similar to D+B, from the first game.
    • Tigre Punks represents the Tiger. A returning brand, Tigre Punks continues to use the Spanish word for "Tiger".
    • Cony x Cony represents the Rabbit. A "Cony", or "Coney" is an archaic British English word for "Rabbit".
    • RyuGu represents the Dragon. The name is Japanese, and can mean "Dragon Palace". It could be referencing the Dragon Palace Castle, in which the dragon god of the ocean resides, under the sea.
    • gara gara represents the Snake. "Garagara" is a Japanese onomotopeia, referring to a rattling or clattering noise. The pin designs suggest rattling chains, which can bend similarly to a snake. This is also the term used for the sound of a rattlesnake.
    • IL CAVALLO DEL REY represents the Horse. The name is Italian for "The King's Horse".
    • Shepherd House repesents the Ram. A shepherd, of course, being a man who looks after sheep. The brand even has the same initials as Sheep Heavenly, from the first game.
    • Jupiter of the Monkey represents the Monkey. A returning brand, the name uses the English word "Monkey".
    • Monocrow represents the Rooster. The name is a pun, combining "Monochrome" and "Crow", to reference both the brand's black-and-white pin style and the bird motif.
    • Natural Puppy represents the Dog. The last returning brand, it simply references a young dog.
    • Hog Fang represents the Boar. A hog being a type of pig, much like boars are.
    • Gatto Nero represents the Cat (a "missing" sign that occasionally appears in stories). The name is Italian for "Black Cat", as Gatto Nero uses Shiki's black cat toy, Mister Mew, as its mascot.
    • The other two main brands — croaky panic and Black Honey Chili Cookie — do not fit the zodiac theming. croaky panic has a cutesy frog mascot, and Black Honey Chili Cookie has no animal theme at all. (In Black Honey's case, this is because it's an actual preexisting fashion brand put in the game for Product Placement.)
