Adaptational Sexuality / Fan Works

Go To

Whether it's due to a desire to have more representation that the canon work lacks, disliking a character's canon sexuality, liking a ship that happens to involve two characters going against their canon sexualities, or just simply Girl on Girl Is Hot/Guy on Guy Is Hot. The fans changing a character's canon sexuality in fanworks is a practice that is arguably as old as modern fandom itself.

See Slash Fic for more examples.

The following have their own pages:

Other

Crossovers
  • 'And Thus...' (A MHA / XC2 Crossover): Inko Midoriya is probably straight in canon. In this story she starts dating Rumi Usagiyama once Izumi starts attending U.A., making her likely to be bisexual.
  • BlazBlue Alternative: Remnant (RWBY and BlazBlue): Pyrrha starts out with a crush on Jaune, but she later develops a crush on Yang, making her bisexual in contrast to her canon-self in RWBY, where she was straight by all appearances.
  • but i wrote the words to the swan song: While Juliet Capulet is presumably straight in Romeo and Juliet, in the fic, she is bisexual and has two female lovers, Carlotte and Liv, at different points in the story.
  • Codex Equus:
    • In Warhammer 40,000, the Emperor of Mankind had no sexual/romantic interest in anyone due to loving humanity on a collective level, making him a Truly Single Parent for the Primarchs he created. Here, Golden Scepter is bisexual, with his past lovers including Midday Messenger, Prince Stella Fictor Cahaya, and Morning Star. He once had many mortal and divine lovers during the Alicorn Civilization's heyday, but later became monogamous out of guilt for his past actions, marrying a Pegusas mare in Blessed Skies and staying faithful to her long after her death. After receiving much therapy for his flaws and traumas, he gets together with Midday Messenger and, with her approval, forms a polygamous relationship with her and Stella.
    • In Rock and Rule, there was no such indication that Mok felt attracted to anyone save himself. Here, War Rock sired hundreds of illegitimate children through his affairs with many mares and fillies who were attracted to his 'bad stallion' image. He's also a Depraved Bisexual in that he kidnapped and raped a then-mortal Prince Healing Song/Medela in order to psychologically break him, and wanted to make Melody his Sex Slave by turning her into a Vampire like himself.
  • An Extraordinary Journey: In the Recursive Fanfiction The Faith Chronicles , Buffy is gay. Or maybe bi. At any rate, by the end of the first story in the AU, they want to explore a relationship with Willow.
  • Eyes on Me:
    • In their respective canon, Bitsy and Helen only ever show attraction to men (Helen is also shown to have a boyfriend in one episode, though they break up in the end). Here, Bitsy is depicted as a lesbian while Helen is shown to date women herself (though her exact sexuality isn't specified).
    • Both Sasha Nein and Milla Vodello are presumably straight in their respective canon. Here, Milla is sapphic while Sascha is aroace.
  • Fine Lines series (a crossover between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Stargate SG-1): Tara is revealed to have Ascended after her death and has fallen in love with Daniel Jackson; this prompts some surprise from her old friends in the Scooby Gang, but Tara observes that gender didn't mean much to the Ascended in their natural states, with her bond with Daniel focused on her perception of his soul.
  • A Frozen Miracle: While Elsa's canon sexuality has yet to be disclosed, here Esperanza Madrigal is confirmed by Word of God to be ace (with the narrative outright saying that she has no interest in looking for a spouse).
  • Guardians, Wizards, and Kung-Fu Fighters: In canon, Nerissa's relationship with Cassidy was never confirmed to be romantic despite the Ho Yay subtext. Here, they're confirmed to have been girlfriends.
  • Harbinger (Finmonster) (Danny Phantom, ParaNorman):
    • Jazz likes girls in this verse.
    • Ember also apparently likes girls, while her canon counterpart was dating Skulker.
  • Hero Academia D×D (High School D×D, My Hero Academia Massive Multiplayer Crossover): In canon,Momo and Kyoka have no known preference in gender, if any, as they're focusing more on their Hero careers. In the fic, not only are they both in a relationship with each other but also attracted to Izuku. Kyoka is the most egregious example as she seems to be predominately attracted to women, she also has fantasies regarding Rias Gremory, but her lack of interactions with other male characters leaves her in a limbo between being bisexual or If It's You, It's Okay.
  • The Infinite Loops (Massive Multiplayer Crossover): Happens quite a bit. It's justified, however, as when the world tree crashed, the code related to looper sexuality was among the first thing to go and the admins didn't think it was as important as some other pieces of code they needed to recover.
  • Infinity Train: Seeker of Crocus and its side-stories change sexualities a lot.
    • The co-author Green Phantom Queen reveals that Specter is gay (specifically demiromantic) and crushes on Ryoken, whereas he has no canonical love interest in his series.
    • Ryan and Min-Gi are married, turning Ryan to bisexual (as he dated three girls in the show) and Min-Gi is gay.
    • Jesse and Lake had plenty of Ship Tease moments, but Jesse is revealed to be asexual and Lake is aromantic.
    • Chloe in the anime was implied to have Ship Tease with Goh. Her alternate self, Colette, is bi-curious; she has feelings for her partner Hop, but is going steady with her girlfriend, Regina.
  • Aliens/Once Upon a Time fanfic Monsters: Regina and Emma are both straight in the show. Here, Regina is bisexual and Emma, despite her sexuality never being stated in the story, only shows interest in women.
  • Nothing is Impossible (Kim Possible, Jackie Chan Adventures, The Powerpuff Girls and My Life as a Teenage Robot): In canon, Kim was straight and only ever had crushes on boys. In, this story, she's bisexual and states that she's dated plenty of boys and girls in the past. Similarly, Jenny is straight in canon as well, only ever crushing on boys. Here, it's hinted that she has a crush on Kim.
  • The Parliament of Heroes (The DCU, Gravity Falls, The Owl House, and Amphibia): In the comics, Rose Worth (aka Rose Wilson, daughter of Deathstroke/Slade Wilson) only ever had male love interests. In this series, she develops feelings for Wendy, and the tags on the AO3 version of the A Summer Job snippets confirm that she's a lesbian here.
  • Pokémon Crossing (Animal Crossing and Pokémon): Most Animal Crossing characters don't have a confirmed sexuality, so several characters get one: The three main protagonists (Benedict, Kidd, and Tank) are bisexual and in a polyamorous relationship, Apollo and Wolfgang are dating each other, Cesar and Cyrano are a married couple, Frita and Pashmina are dating each other, and Frank and Rooney are ex-boyfriends.
  • A Thing of Vikings (How to Train Your Dragon and Brave): The fic not only shows Astrid go beyond her Single-Target Sexuality of the show to the point that she falls in love with her and Hiccup's female concubine Wulfhild, but also sees Merida fall in love with Cami of the Bog Burglars, whereas in canon she was at least briefly attracted to a man.
  • Raise Your Voice Against Liars (Persona 5 and Miraculous Ladybug): This trope caused a lot of trouble for the authoress of the fic, as the entirety of the Japanese Phantom Thieves were moved all across the sexuality spectrum (Ann, as an example, was made into an Asexual-Homoromantic), which caused a lot of backlash and toxic homophobic reviews that the authoress promptly shelved the Fanfiction Dot Net version and instead migrated it on to Archive of Our Own where she has more control over the reviews allowed.
  • The Silver Raven (The Owl House and Devil May Cry): In the games, he was straight by all appearances, given his Childhood Friend Romance with Kyrie. In this fic, as his light flirting with Hunter/The Golden Guard and the Author's Notes at the end of Chapter 18 confirm, he's bisexual.
  • Sixes and Sevens (Agent Carter and The Invaders): In this fic, the trope is combined with Canon Character All Along, as Emily Gower is set up to become Jacqueline Falsworth and is introduced as being in a relationship with FANY ambulance driver Edith Harker.
  • SV Wishes (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong and MXTX's other published works): Whereas Shen Yuan of canon was deep in the closet, in denial of his sexuality and his romantic feelings and firmly believed himself straight. Here Shen Yuan has already realized his homosexuality, not that it helps him.
  • There Was Once an Avenger From Krypton (Massive Multiplayer Crossover):
    • Kara Danvers in canon was straight and only ever had male love interests. Here, she's pansexual and used to be in love with Lena Luthor, who is herself an example, as she goes from straight in canon to Armored Closet Gay here.
    • Winn Schott is stated to be gay in this verse.
    • Marinette Dupain-Cheng in the show only ever showed interest in Adrien. Here, she's openly bisexual, though she still primarily crushes on Adrien.
    • Chloé Bourgeois was very much a Clingy Jealous Girl towards Adrian, but here she's an Armored Closet Gay and has a crush on Marinette.
    • Caline Bustier's sexuality is unknown in canon, but she had a previous relationship with a woman here.
    • Mabel Pines was rather boy-crazy in the past, but here, she ends up dating Pacifica and openly flirts with Luz when they first meet.
    • Skye is canonically straight, but bisexual here.
    • Danny Fenton/Phantom is transgender here, which is why Dani/Ellie is female, though unlike him she actually identifies as such.
    • Several other characters were detailed in a Pride Month post here (later expanded upon in this post). Among others is Pidge being pansexual and genderfluid while Black Widow is an aromantic bisexual, just to name a few.
    • Harry Potter, due to being a girl raised as a boy to better hide her from Voldemort's remaining followers, has grown to no longer care about gender, being effectively neutral on the concept and telling people to address her as whatever they're comfortable with.
  • To Belong (massive multi-player crossover): Dimitri tries to flirt with Anya but she tells him that she isn't into men (and even if she wasn't, she still wouldn't be interested in a thief like him). Word of God has confirmed she's lesbian.
  • In the multi-crossover fanfic Unity (a sequel to Empathy), Honey Lemon is implied to be bisexual, along with Susan (after they start developing feelings for each other at a club). When Susan is trying to sort out her feelings for Honey, Dr. Cockroach tells her about his romantic history with a man named George (stating that he's gay). In their canon works, Susan was only ever shown to be interested in men, while the orientations of Honey Lemon and Dr. Cockroach were left unconfirmed.
  • In Universe Falls (Steven Universe and Gravity Falls), Dipper is said to be bi-curious according to author MiniJen. In canon, he only ever showed interest in girls.
  • Where the Sunlight Ends: Taking inspiration from Andrew Garfield's ideas about where the character could go, Peter Three is openly bisexual, sharing a kiss with Bobby and briefly discussing their respective sexualities with him in Chapter 11.
  • Whitehall University (The Tudors and others): Mary Boleyn and Elizabeth Blount, who both married men in Real Life, fall in love with one another.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim

  • What Leads You Here: Tamao' whose sexuality is never touched on canonically, is a lesbian in this story, and in a relationship with Yuki (who settles down with a man in canon). Natsuno as well mentions having had a brief crush on a girl when she was little.

Ace Attorney

  • Turnabout Specter: Franziska Von Karma and Maya Fey's sexualities are not touched upon in canon, due to the games not delving into romance outside of flashbacks and the occasional Ship Tease. Here though, they're both lesbians and are Happily Married.

Arrowverse

  • Flip a Coin: Mon-El. Given the ambiguous wording when he's talking about people he's slept with as well as his mentioned attraction to both Superman and Supergirl, Mon-El is apparently bisexual.

Batman

  • Angel of the Bat: Cassandra Cain is stated to be pansexual via Word of God (though the word is never used in-story). In the comics continuity, she is consistently portrayed as either straight or too mentally and sociologically stunted to understand sexuality. Her struggle to live as her truest self, both as queer-identifying and a recent convert to Catholicism, is a recurring theme.
  • Cat Tales: In the 2002 story Trick or Treat, Bruce asks about the villain Cavalier. Selina replies that he retired from crime, moved to Vegas, and is now doing voiceovers for local radio. When Bruce is surprised that he "went straight", Selina's response is "Not exactly", then reveals that he's living with a blackjack dealer named Stan. Humorously, a 2006 issue of Justice League of America later revealed that Cavalier was canonically gay.
  • The Robin And The Hood: Jason is gay, while Bart Allen is Anything That Moves because he grew up in the 30th century, while Tim is demi-sexual.
  • In The 5 Earths Project DC multiverse, the story Batman Family: Thanksgiving reveals that in this version of Earth-2, Philip Wayne (Bruce's uncle who in the original comics was only vaguely referred to as the reason young Bruce didn't end up in state care) was gay.

Bleach

  • Vow of the King: Orihime is heterosexual in canon while Tatsuki's sexuality is never stated. In this story, Orihime is bisexual while Tatsuki is a lesbian.

Buffyverse

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a bit infamous for its use of No Bisexuals with Willow, who is "gay" despite having canonically shown interest in several male characters. It's fairly common for fanfics to change this, even if Willow is going to be paired with another woman.
  • Btvs: Seasons Rewrite: In canon, Tara was gay. Here, she's straight and ends up with Spike of all people. Willow also remains straight and with Oz.
Danganronpa
  • While Nagito Komaeda is canonically confirmed to have romantic feelings for Hajime Hinata, there's not much in canon that suggests Hajime returns his affections, and he receives numerous Ship Tease moments with Chiaki. Many fans vastly prefer shipping Hajime and Nagito as a couple, and Hajime's Superpowered Evil Side Izuru Kamukura is frequently portrayed as having an Unholy Matrimony going on with Nagito during their time as Remnants of Despair, even though Izuru only ever displays interest in Chiaki as well.
  • Sayaka Maizono is often paired with Mukuro Ikusaba (when she isn't being shipped with Makoto or Leon) even though she only displays interest in men in canon, and both of them are shown to be romantically interested in Makoto.
The DCU
  • Kara of Rokyn: Zora Vil-Lar, a character who is straight in canon, is depicted as a lesbian in a relationship with a woman.
  • New Tamaran:
    • All female characters are bisexual, along with Aqualad and Speedy.
    • Amazons, Tamaraneans, and Atlanteans are also said to all be bisexual.

Disney Animated Canon

  • A Magical Evening:
    • Princess Sofia and Lucinda are both lesbians, and they are in a relationship, while in canon their sexualities are unclear.
    • Princess Hildegard and Princess Clio are in a romantic relationship, while in canon they were just good friends and both had a crush on Prince Hugo.
    • Near the end of the story, Baileywick reveals that he is gay.
  • Make a Man Out of You:
    • Shang is explicitly bisexual instead of Ambiguously Bi.
    • Instead of being a straight woman, Ping is a queer man.
  • The Secret Life of Punzie: Rapunzel is only shown to be interested in men in canon. Here Rapunzel is a lesbian.
  • Swear Not By The Moon: Rapunzel and Cassandra are in love, and Rapunzel shows no romantic interest in Eugene or any other man, while in canon Rapunzel was with Eugene and Cassandra is Ambiguously Gay.
  • White Magnolia, Pink Chrysanthemum: In addition to Mulan being born a man named Ping, he's also gay. Same goes for Shang, who has fallen in love with Ping the moment he saw him perform as a nándànnote  at his hometown's theater. The Emperor noticed the attraction between them and approves of their relationship, revealing that he himself was once in love with a man, but had to marry his bride to continue the lineage of the royal family.

Doug

Dragon Ball

  • The Fall of Lord Frieza: Tien, confirmed asexual in canon, is straight and in a relationship with Launch.
  • Hindsight: Bulma is portrayed as bisexual in this Alternate Universe Fic. She has a slow-burning romance with Vegeta, but she also likes women and has no problems being in a quasi-romantic relationship with Lady Unus (Android 18's name in this fic).
  • Saiyan Love Multiplied; Not Divided: Goku, Vegeta, Yamcha, and Tien (the former three straight and the latter a confirmed asexual) are all bisexual.
  • Tales of the Monkey Queen: Goku, Chichi, and Mai are bisexual, Suno's a lesbian, and Future Trunks is gay with Future Gohan implied to be as well (Gohan in the current timeline initially thought he was bisexual but later came out as straight).

Far Cry

Fate Series

  • Fate Stay Night Heirs: In the source material, Saber has only shown attraction to Shirou Emiya, and in life only married a woman out of duty for her kingdom. In, this setting, she is summoned by Rin Tohsaka instead of Shirou, leading the two to fall in love.

Fire Emblem

  • Golden Threads Tie Us: Severa and Lucina are in a relationship in spite of both girls being straight in canon.

Fireman Sam

  • Everyday Craziness in Pontypandy: In canon, Elvis is implied to be straight, due to an interest in Penny in early seasons, and later Krystyna. Here, he's portrayed as gay and in love with an oblivious Sam.

Friday Night Funkin'

  • Friday Night Funkin' Soft: Canonically, Boyfriend and Pico's sexualities are not defined, with the former having expressed interest in both men and women, and the latter being an Interpretative Character. In Soft, Benjamin (Soft Boyfriend) is explicitly stated to be gay, while Soft Pico is bisexual.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi/The Untamed

  • Best of My Love gives us Meng Yao, who married a woman in canon and had a child with her. In this, he's asexual and romantically interested in men.
  • call it what you want: Jin Zixuan, who in canon marries Jiang Yanli, is gay.
    • Yanli herself, who has a Single-Target Sexuality centered on Jin Zixuan in canon, is queer as well, though whether she's bisexual or a lesbian is left unclear.
  • Impenetrable Walls gives us Lan Xichen, possibly. While his precise orientation was left imprecise in the original series, he is somewhere on the asexuality spectrum here.

The Ghost and Molly McGee

  • An Unpleasant Surprise, Molly and Libby are presented as a couple in the story and in a happy relationship for 3 months now. Molly explains to her now-former friend Ashley she's never been attracted to a boy before and Libby is her first crush.

Gravity Falls

  • Reunion Falls: While Mabel was only ever interested in boys, here she develops a (reciprocated) crush on Pacifica.

Harry Potter

  • Holly Potter and the Witching World depicts an AU where 90% of the magical world is female and pretty much Everyone Is Bi, meaning that most of the characters have a different sexuality than in canon. One exception is Albus Dumbledore, who is Younger and Hipper than in canon, but still completely gay — and possibly Hagrid, whose situation is a little ambiguous.

Hilda

  • Hilda: The Runaway AU'': Johanna and Gerda end up in a romantic relationship with each other. In the show, their sexualities are not established.

Hellsing

  • Honey and Vinegar: In canon, Integra was asexual and remained a virgin her whole life. In this fic, she's married and had multiple children.

Jem

  • Our Time Is Now: In canon, Danse only has male love interests. This fic and its sequel have her as a closeted lesbian who is in a Secret Relationship with Video. She did try dating a man, Stefan from the episode "Heartland, Homeland", once but it didn't work out. Danse didn't feel attracted to him and, when Video confronted her about it, Danse ran back to her girlfriend.

Kill la Kill

Kim Possible

The Legend of Korra

  • The Legend of Genji: Iroh II had no known sexual/romantic relationships in canon. In the fan comic's backstory, he's gay. It's actually rather important since he abdicated his right as Izumi's heir to marry his boyfriend and left the throne to his sister, the current Fire Lord at the start of the series.

Life Is Strange

  • Fur And Photography: In canon, Max was bisexual, having a history of being attracted to Warren and "skater bros" while also developing something with Chloe. In the story, she is more into women, turning down Warren because she "doesn't swing that way" and is more open about her attraction to Chloe.

The Loud House

  • Flowing Star: As a way to celebrate Pride Month, the author confirms in the end notes from the second part of the prologue that Stella is bisexual and Lucy is aro-ace in this fanfic. The former never showed interest in either boys or girls while the latter has shown interest in boys.
  • It's (Not) Your Fault:
    • Luan has apparently gotten together with Maggie in the background, while in the show, Luan only shows interest in boys.
    • Sam also qualifies in the opposite direction. In the show, she is a lesbian who is only shown with Luna. In the comic, in addition to having been with Luna, she had a boyfriend in the past and would later end up with Lincoln.
  • Sin Kids AU: Everyone Is Bi in the AU, so canon characters that are either straight (Lincoln, Luan) or gay (Luna, Sam) are written as going both ways.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

  • Bucky Barnes Gets His Groove Back & Other International Incidents: In film canon, Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers, and Bucky Barnes are all implied to be straight, or (in the case of Sam) their sexuality or love life is given no attention in-story. In this setting, Sam is stated to be gay and was in a sexual relationship with Riley prior to the latter's death. Steve and Barnes are self-proclaimed "queers" (which in their time referred to anyone who wasn't cisgender hetero-exclusive), and they were in a poly arrangement with Peggy back in the day. Steve and Sam have also both had (undeclared and unrequited) crushes on each other.
  • Peta Parker: MJ still has the same relationship with Peta despite her being a girl, even eventually calling herself her girlfriend. The same trope can apply to Liz, Peter's love interest from Homecoming, the story implying that the events of Homecoming were the same (minus Peta being a girl and her secret identity remaining a secret to Tony and Happy Hogan).

Marvel Universe

  • Earth 717: Electro is gay, with his boyfriend Henry breaking up with him shortly before his transformation.

Mean Girls

  • Rip Her to Shreds: Regina is a closeted lesbian and Janis is also queer. In canon, both are implied to be straight.

Miraculous Ladybug

  • CONSEQUENCES:
    • In the show, Kim has only been interested in girls like Chloé and Ondine while Max is confirmed by Word of God to be asexual. Many of the stories in the CONSEQUENCES series, plus Crumbling Down by the same author, have the two as gay and dating (or started dating in the case of CUTTING THE STRINGS).
    • In SUN'S WRATH, Adrien and Luka are both gay and are dating each other.
  • Crimson and Noire:
    • Marinette and Adrien are implied to be at least bisexual rather than straight as in canon, with Marinette being open to going to the school dance with Kagami and Adrien developing a crush on and later dating Luka while in Kitty Section.
    • Word of God says that Luka is pan.
    • Kagami is attracted to girls, notably with her feelings for and later her relationship with Marinette.
    • Gabriel Agreste is also bisexual, having dated Harry Clown when they were in college before meeting Emilie.
    • It’s implied that Lila is now lesbian, or at least interested in girls, given her Clingy Jealous Girl tendencies towards Marinette.
  • Feralnette AU: Adrien, Felix, Marinette, and Kagami are all bisexual. In canon, they are all straight. According to the author, all characters are assumed bisexual (except Gabriel) unless stated otherwise.
  • Lady Fairy (I_dont_know_whats_going_on_either): In canon, Marinette, Kagami, and Adrien are stuck in a three-person Love Dodecahedron, with Marinette and Kagami being love rivals over their crush on Adrien. In this fic, after Marinette convinces Kagami's mother Tomoe to allow her daughter more freedom, Kagami ends up developing a crush on Marinette.
  • Leave for Mendeleiev: In canon, Marinette was straight and had a crush on Adrien. Here, she's demisexual and ends up dating Aurore.
  • Marigami Stories: In canon, Marinette and Kagami are both rivals for Adrien's affections. In this fic, they wind up dating each other when Kagami is the only one who sees Lila as the liar that she is without abandoning her like the rest of her classmates. In fact, Kagami offhandedly calls Adrien a fool for not recognizing and reciprocating Marinette's affections.
  • Miraculous: Tales of Scarlet Beetle & Ikati Black: The sexualities of several characters are changed for the fic. While some of them are simply expansions on what Word of Gay has already confirmed, others were changed specifically for the story.
    • Kim (who's only shown interest in girls in canon) and Max (who Word of Gay describes as asexual) have a mutual crush on each other here.
    • Marinette, who had a near-Love at First Sight moment with Adrien in canon, is demiromantic here.
    • Théo Barbot still has a crush on the resident Ladybug hero, regardless of the Gender Flip.
  • Mon Arc-en-Ciel: While Nathaniel's sexuality is never expressly mentioned in the source material, the closest we are given is his interest in Marinette. In this story, it is implied that he unknowingly reciprocates Marc's feelings for him.
  • Moving On: Here, Chloe ends up in a relationship with Allegra, Marinette's music-loving classmate. The narrative implies that they like to flirt and make out. A lot.
  • (pockets full of) Stones: While in the show Adrien has shown attraction to girls, here he is aromantic asexual.
  • Spotless: In canon, both Marinette and Kagami are rivals for Adrien's affections. In this fic, it eventually led to the two of them getting together instead.
  • Thanks, but no: While Adrien and Nino in the show have only shown interest in girls, in the fic both of them get into a relationship with each other.
  • There's More Magic Out There
    • Chloé is now gay rather than straight as in canon.
    • Word of God confirmed that Alix is aromantic, while here she is demiromantic.
    • Kagami is either bisexual or pansexual with feelings for both Marinette and Adrien.

Mother

My Hero Academia

  • A beacon in the dark: In the original, there are tiny hints of Todoroki's sexuality, with his Implied Love Interest being Yaoyorozu. Here, he is openly attracted to Midoriya. Similarly, Midoriya shows attraction to Todoroki, while he previously only showed interest in women.
  • Jade Lightning: In canon, Izuku has only ever expressed interest in girls and Kaminari is usually portrayed lusting after the other female students alongside Mineta Played for Laughs. In the fic, Izuku/Mikumo and Kaminari start dating after the Sports Festival.
  • Raindancer: Izuku is heavily implied to be either gay or bisexual, given his flustered reaction and Luminescent Blush in response to seeing Eijirou's new look and commenting on Hanta's form-fitting Hero Costume. Itsuka is portrayed in a similar manner, blushing and sputtering when Mina starts calling her by her first name when she mistakes the conversation for a Love Confession. Eijirou is also blushing when he sees Izuku's surprised reaction to his Expository Hairstyle Change.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • A Diplomatic Visit: In canon, Twilight only ever shows attraction to a teenage boy. By the end of the series, she, Moondancer, and Trixie are all together. Likewise, the epilogue reveals that Rarity, who's only expressed interest in stallions before, is dating both her friend Coco Pommel, who's admitted to being attracted to her, and a stallion named Gem Polisher.
  • Principal Celestia Hunts the Undead: Canonically, none of the girls' sexuality is confirmed. Here though, Canterlot High's Applejack is gay.

Naruto

  • Naru-Hina Chronicles: In canon, Ino is straight. Here, it's revealed that she's bisexual, as she has a crush on Sakura, which interferes somewhat with her growing romance with Choji.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

  • Advice and Trust: While they are canonically straight, Asuka is a case of If It's You, It's Okay towards Rei and Rei herself is bisexual in this story. Shinji and Asuka being frightened of their inability to have a successful three-way relationship is the only reason why Rei hasn't hooked up with both of them. There's also Kaworu Nagisa being Ambiguously Bi in this story while being Ambiguously Gay in canon. Another example is Ritsuko, who's bisexual in this story in contrast to canon.
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion: Genocide: Rei falls for newest female pilot Keiko Nagara, despite being canonically straight.

One Piece

  • The Logia Brothers:
    • Whereas in canon Luffy is all but outright stated to be asexual, in this story, he's definitely heterosexual, as he's in a relationship with multiple women. However, Nami comments that Luffy needs to have an emotional bond before being able to respond sexually, which is known as demisexuality.
    • Nami, Mikita and Vivi's canonical sexuality are undisclosed, though Oda claims that Nami at least "has no interest in romance or intimacy at the moment" like most of the other Straw Hats. In this fic, the three are in a sexual relationship with Luffy as well as each other.

The Octonauts

  • Junior Officers: While none of the series' title characters have confirmed sexualities, the fic offers some of this.
    • Tweak is a lesbian and has a girlfriend.
    • Shellington is bisexual; in school, he crushed on a boy named Glenn, but ultimately he ends up with Deborah.

Once Upon a Time

The Owl House

  • In canon, Camila's only known love was her husband Manny, while Eda mentions having many ex-boyfriends and the transmasculine non-binary Raine Whispers. In An Odd Little Family, Eda and Camila wind up dating each other.
  • Boiling Isles and Beyond: While Luz and Amity are still their confirmed sexualities, the author has also confirmed and/or changed the sexualities of other characters. Eda and Skara are Bi, King and Lilith are gay, Gus and Hooty are Asexual, and Willow is Pan.
  • Luz Clawthorne:
    • Long before Lilith was confirmed to be an asexual aromantic, she was dubbed bisexual in this story, having dated Odalia and Stanford Pines in the past. Odalia is also bi because of this and marrying Alador.
    • Emira and Viney, who end up in a relationship, are changed from Ambiguously Gay to actually gay and bi, respectively.
    • Skara is also confirmed to be bisexual, due to dating Bat Boy (or Raptor as he's known here) and later dating Willow.
    • Hunter is gay and is dating Edric at the start of the story instead of bisexual and getting a Ship Tease with Willow while Gus is implied to be aromantic.
    • While Anne and Marcy don't have their orientations confirmed, them dating each other contrasts their Ambiguously Bi statuses in Amphibia.
  • MoringMark - TOH Comics:
    • While both Skara and Viney did have some hints towards being LGBTQ+ in the series proper (being Ambiguously Bi and Ambiguously Gay respectively), neither of them ever showed overt interest in girls. Here, they're depicted as a married couple as adults and are Milan's parents.
    • Various comics depict Gus, Matt, and Alador as bisexual, with the former two showing interest in each other and the latter dating Darius following his and Odalia's divorce. The actual show never hinted at any of them being anything other than straight.
  • The Witch Children: Inspired by other fics with a similar pairing, Amity is made Bi so that the author can do a polyamorous relationship between her, Luz, and a male OC, in this case an Author Avatar. However, at the time of writing this, the pairing has not been implemented yet.

Persona

  • The pairing between Yukari and Mitsuru is one of the most popular ships in the Persona 3 fandom even though both of them can be romanced by the Male Protagonist but not the Female Protagonist.
    • It is not uncommon to see Yukari and Mitsuru being shipped with the Female Protagonist even though the game does not give her the option to romance either of them.
  • Persona 5 fan works often pair Ann with Shiho (if she's not with Ren or Ryuji), even though their relationship in canon is never implied to be anything but friendship.
    • It's also not uncommon for works to pair Makoto together with Haru or Ann, even though all of them can be romanced by Ren in the original game and none of them express interest in women beyond platonic friendship.
    • Ryuji is frequently paired up with Ren in fanworks despite the fact that Ryuji is the most outwardly perverted of the Phantom Thieves when it comes to women and is also shown to be incredibly uncomfortable when he gets hit on by a couple of gay men in the original version of the game. Fans choose to portray it as a case of If It's You, It's Okay.
  • Hours 'Verse: In canon, the male protagonists of Persona 3 and Persona 5 can only end up in romantic relationships with women. In this series, they are both in homosexual relationships - Minato with Ryoji and Akira with Akechi.
  • Persona 5 Adult Confidant AU: Ann is in a steady relationship with Shiho. While the pair were just as close (albeit not romantically) in the original game, Ann was also available for Ren to romance.
  • Steal the Truth, Reach Out For Your Heart: Along with Ann being in love with Shiho, Kanji is gay (or at least bi), whereas in canon it was rather ambiguous.

Pinkie Cooper and the Jet Set Pets

  • The Pinkie Cooper doll line never had much of anything in the way of indicating the characters' sexual or romantic orientations; the dolls have no boyfriends or indications of their romantic leanings. In the fan comic Pinky and Pepper Forever, Pinky and Pepper are lesbians in a relationship with each other.

Pokémon

Power Rangers

  • Memory Lapse: In this setting, it's revealed that Aisha Campbell, the previous Yellow Ranger, was dating her old friend Shawna; this causes Tanya, the new Yellow Ranger, a few problems, as the circumstances of her joining the team mean that Shawna initially remembers dating Tanya rather than Aisha, and Tanya not only has no memory of Shawna but is completely straight.
  • Power/Rangers (Bootleg Universe): While the character of Billy Cranston had numerous one-off love interests in canon, this Darker and Edgier parody film reveals that Billy is an openly gay arms dealer while Tommy is investigating his death. Rocky lampshades this during his interrogation with Kimberly, saying that "it's unlikely you fucked him too." This may also be a reference to Billy's actor David Yost, who is gay in real life.

Ranma ½

  • Your Own Personal Shampoo: In canon, Akane has never shown attraction to anyone who isn't male. Here, she's bisexual and is as attracted to Shampoo as Ranma is.

Rugrats

  • Beautiful Monster: Betty DeVille is depicted as a lesbian while she's presumably straight in the original cartoon.

RWBY

  • Children of Remnant: Yang, Velvet, Emerald, Qrow, and Clover, are all confirmed to be gay (Cinder is heavily implied to be gay but it's not outright confirmed), while Taiyang and Neopolitan are bisexual.
  • Recovery: Weiss is lesbian and her brief interest in Neptune was a cover.
  • Ruby and Nora: Pyrrha (who had feelings for Juane in canon) and all of Team RWBY are gay (in canon, Ruby is unconfirmed, Yang is pansexual, Blake is bisexual, and Weiss is attracted to men). Ren and Jaune (who are both straight in canon) are revealed to have begun a relationship. Qrow is also revealed to be bisexual while showing no attraction to men in canon.
  • RWBY: Scars:
    • Weiss is explicitly lesbian. In RWBY canon. the only person she's been attracted to has been a boy named Neptune (here, he's Sun's boyfriend) and briefly to an older Jaune in volume 9.
    • It's implied that Yang's mother Raven is a lesbian. She had a one-night stand with a friend and ended up pregnant with Yang. In canon, Raven is only shown to be attracted to Taiyang, but in RWBY: Scars she actually liked Summer instead.
    • In canon, Yang's sexuality is unclear, though Volume 9 confirms she's into women. She's bisexual here.
  • Team LVDR: Penny is openly gay, while no such romantic interest in women was mentioned in canon.

The Simpsons

  • Hommer Simpson: Patty is canonically lesbian but is straight (or at least bisexual) in this series- in order to pair her with Grug.

A Song of Ice and Fire

Sonic the Hedgehog

  • Sonic the Comic – Online!: An issue set in the future has Tekno and Amy raising a kid together (with Sonic as his godfather). It's technically not stated that they're raising him as a couple, but there's no reason to think otherwise in the context. This suggests that they're both bisexual. As it was written by one of the official writers of the source material, it also likely counts as a Word of Gay for the original comic. In game canon, Amy has a Single-Target Sexuality for Sonic.

Star Wars

  • The Desert Storm:
    • In canon, Obi-Wan Kenobi was straight. Here, Ben (Obi-Wan's future self) is revealed to be bisexual during the Zodiac arc, where it's mentioned that during his exile, he slept with Bail as a form of Sex for Solace and would have slept with Breha as well.
    • Sian Jeisel is revealed to be a lesbian in Tarot where she’s developed a crush on her fellow Padawan Bultar Swan, whereas her sexual orientation was never made clear in Legends.

Star vs. the Forces of Evil

  • Queens of Mewni:
    • Solaria the Monster Carver, in canon, is only confirmed to have slept with a man, and even then only for the purposes of conceiving an heiress. In this fic, she's confirmed to have been bisexual.
    • In canon, Crescenta the Eager was in a relationship with her 'gal pal' Emily and, again, only slept with a man to conceive an heiress. Here, she's straight to a rather tragic degree (as in her eventual husband was a womanizer and she'd cheat on him with her male cousin).
    • Festivia the Fun, much like Solaria, in canon is only known for certain to have had a husband, but here is also bisexual.
    • Celena the Shy is a bit of a downplayed example. In canon, she had a husband she conceived her heir with. Here, she's somewhere on the aspec spectrum (likely demisexual, as the only person she showed any sexual interest in was her husband in this verse, Elm).
    • Star in canon is Ambiguously Bi with her hooking up with Marco in the end. Here, the ambiguity is gone.

Steven Universe

  • We Can Be Heroes: In canon, Lapis doesn't really have a properly defined sexuality, aside from Ship Tease with Peridot and thematic parallels to an abusive relationship between her and Jasper. In this fic however, she's explicitly bisexual and really seems to like muscular dragon aliens, as shown by a dream where she's literally drooling over scantily-clad Dragonians of both genders while lounging at a beach.

Super Mario Bros.

  • (Mario) The Music Box: In the canon games, Mario only ever had eyes on Princess Peach. In (Mario) The Music Box, he's still in love with Peach, but one of the endings in the Insane Route pairs him up with the male Riba. Word of Gay would later explicitly confirm that Mario is bisexual.invoked
  • The Sea Shadow: In canon, both Vivian and Goombella only had eyes for Mario. In this story, they end up falling for each other, with Vivian explicitly being confirmed to be pansexual. Goombella isn't confirmed, but since she did have a crush on Mario before she falls for Vivian, that could imply she's bisexual, demisexual, or also pansexual.
  • Bowser's Koopalings: Canon Lemmy didn’t have a confirmed sexuality while here, Lemmy is gay.

Super Smash Bros.

  • Incorrect Smash Bros Quotes: While most of the fighters don't have explicit sexualities, the majority are implied to be straight in their home games. Here, most of them are LGBT, with some being in polyamorous relationships (the most notable being the Palutena Poly Party).

Sword Art Online

Team Fortress 2

  • Something New: Miss Pauling is bisexual and happily married to Scout, whereas she's a lesbian in canon.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

  • The Chronicles of Karai Getting Her Shit Together:
    • Both Karai and Leo are bisexual.
    • In canon, Shinigami reciprocates Mikey's harmless flirting. Here she is a lesbian, asking Karai if Leo has a sister.
    • In canon, Casey Jones routinely fights Donatello for April's affections. Word of Gay confirms here that he is "gay in denial", spending a lot of his time with Raphael in a bromance and complaining an awful lot about his handsome classmate.
    • In canon, Mikey has only ever shown interest in girls like Shinigami and Renet. Word of Gay says this Mikey is pansexual.

Thomas & Friends

  • Exaggerated in Ask the Famous 8!, which has a Cast Full of Gay. Whereas the source material didn't seem to have any romantic relationships between the engines to begin with, here Thomas, Gordon, and Duck are bisexual, Edward, Henry, and James are gay, and Percy is pansexual. And to list the side characters, Bill and Ben are both grey-pan ace, Donald is bisexual, and Douglas and Ferdinand are gay. It's easier to list the number of characters who aren't among the LGBTQ+ community.

Total Drama

  • Random Drama Series
    • Bridgette, who is canonically straight, is a lesbian in this, getting into a relationship with Angel.
    • Caitlin qualifies; in 6teen she was also straight but here, she's bisexual (though she has yet to realize it.)
  • Total Reordered Series
    • In canon, Ella was only shown to be interested in guys due to her crush on Dave. Here, she's Ambiguously Bi due to her crush on Dawn and attraction to Alejandro.
    • Topher, who had been Ambiguously Gay, is actually gay here but is in denial about it.
  • Total Shuffled Island Series
    • Rather than being Ambiguously Gay as in canon, Topher actually is gay in this fic.
    • Eva is revealed to be a lesbian here while in canon, she was attracted to Justin.
    • In the show, Duncan and Sky were both in heterosexual relationships; here, they both realize and come out as bisexual.
    • The show implies Owen is Ambiguously Bi due to his relationship with Izzy and falling for Justin's charms. In Shuffled PI, he admits he's pansexual.
  • Unbreakable Red Silken Thread
    • Jasmine and Sammy are lesbians in a relationship.
    • Heather is bisexual and openly comfortable with it.
    • Lindsay is a situational case, not truly bisexual as much as she enjoys having sex with those she loves regardless of gender, which might make her either demisexual or pansexual.

Turning Red

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs

Yu-Gi-Oh!

  • YuyaVision: In canon, Placido was based on Aporia's despair when he lost someone he love with said interest a woman (Eurethea). Here, Placido falls in love with Yusei, whom he reciprocates feelings for, thus making the former homosexual and the latter gay (which is later shared with Kiryu who was never shown to have a romantic interest). Meanwhile, Carly heavily crushed on Jack Atlas (with some Ship Tease in regards to Misty) but now she's considered bisexual.

Worm

  • Wolf Spider: In canon, both Taylor and Rachel are straight. Here they are bisexual and gay respectively.
