Omake/Further Reading

Hee, I've always wanted to do some kind of "omake" thing.

Behind the Scenes

Why boldface for titles? When I first started the liveblog, I didn't like how italics looked with the rest of the text. Boldface stood out better.

The first few chapters don't have any outbound links. I eventually started adding them because I saw that other liveblogs did so, and also because I got a comment about how short one of my installments was. That's when I decided that covering just one episode per installment wouldn't cut it. I settled upon installments that were three pages long in my document program as a suitable length.

References, Resources, and Linkies

I know I was kind of disappointed with the show's eventual direction and conclusion, so here is a collection of links to things that have some of the series' spirit.

Aeon Genesis Translation Group: This group has been releasing English translation patches for Japanese Super Famicom ROMs for years now, such as Clock Tower, Super Robot Wars, and Live A Live. Their site provides updates on their current projects, which include Shin Megami Tensei If (SNES) and Star Ocean: Blue Sphere (Game Boy Color).

Encyclopedia Obscura: A long-dead site, but it has some interesting reviews of weird and unbelievable video game and film rarities, namely Samurai Zombie Nation (NES), Monster Party (NES), Sweet Home (NES), Little Red Hood (NES), and Choaniki, among others. Probably NSFW, what with all the murder and mayhem in MP and SH and the campiness of Choaniki.

Flying Omelette: A decent site with some interesting walkthroughs through Super NES games. Highlight: “Screwed-Up NES Crap”.

Game Informer: I know a lot of people can not stand GI, but I like it as my go-to gaming site for news. There are some fun features at times. The GI community is really good, too.

Game Rankings: Aggregate review score site.

Hardcore Gaming 101: A great archive of classic, modern, Western, and Japanese games, across all genres and systems. YMMV, but I don't appreciate the tone of some of their reviews, however; to whit, they actually rewrote their Altered Beast retrospective because it was a bit sloppy and embittered, but that was what made it sort of fun to read! Anyway, they have featured a ton of games that were on the show. The reviews tend to have links with further info on the games. Coincidentally, this is the site that linked me to TV Tropes all those years ago. With that, we've come full circle. The circle of life.

LP Archive: An archive of Let's Plays from the Something Awful forum goons.

PC Gamer Crapshoot: Every Saturday, Richard Cobbett rolls the dice to play a random PC game to see if he hits on a hidden gem, or a piece of PC gaming history that should have been remained obscure. If you don't want to go through the PC Gamer website, you can peep the Crapshoots on Cobbett's personal website.

Retsupurae: The LP guys that riff on bad LPs, and later, Flash games and bad/lulzy games in general. I discovered them through TV Tropes from their “Wrongpurae” of The Town With No Name.

Silent Hill Fansites

Silent Hill Heaven: Calls itself the "ultimate Silent Hill fansite". The downright gorgeous site design makes it tempting to agree.

Silent Hill Memories: A modest site for news on the games, movies, soundtracks, and merchandise.

Tumblr

These are some of my favorite Tumblr blogs directly and loosely related to gaming. There are probably countless other quality gaming blogs out there that I haven't discovered yet.

Ask Blogs

RP blogs for a character or multiple characters from a fandom.

Ask Bryan Fury: An ask blog for the bloodthirsty and diabolical Roy Batty Bryan Fury of Tekken with great art.

Ask the Captain: Lars Alexandersson from Tekken 6. A lighthearted ask blog with great and colorful art.

Ask the Ivory Cutter: Nina Williams from Tekken. Good art (albeit a bit faint) and surprisingly lighthearted for the character it stars.

Ask Silent Hill: Seems to have gone dead, but has some funny stuff in the archive. Not for those who need to take Silent Hill seriously.

Resident Evil Blogs

Resident Evil Problems: Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Anonymous submissions of problems and hangups with the games, movies, characters, and the fandom itself.

Silent Hill Blogs:

Positively Silent Hill: Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Only quality fan art, tributes, and other things related to the series.

Silent-Hill-Confessions: One of at least two SH confession blogs out there, this one updates more often. Both may reveal things about the fandom that you may not like, and some confessions are so goofy they have to be from lighthearted Trolls, so take them with a grain of salt.

General Blogs

Box vs. Box: A blog that compares video game box art for all regions.

Did You Know Gaming: A blog that tracks down obscure gaming facts from popular game series.

Escher Girls: Arguably one of the best Tumblr blogs, Escher Girls posts submissions and findings of some of the worst deformation of female anatomy in pop culture – mostly Comic Books, but you bet your bippy there's some stuff from Video Games here too. You'll learn a lot about art and anatomy, even, if you follow it closely.

Final Fantasy Confessions: A juicy confessions blog for the entire Final Fantasy franchise.

TV Tropes itself.

Twitter has proven itself to be a tool for idiots to prove how little respect they have for themselves and others in 140 characters or less, but it's still useful as a tool for keeping tabs on developers and their newest games.

Wikis

Silent Hill

The Cutting Room Floor Wiki: Has hundreds of articles on Dummied Out content in games. The articles are written in a fun, breezy style, and if you mouse over certain image files, you will find some interesting captions.

You Tube Channels

DMJared: Review channel. Does concise, one-minute reviews of current video games, and longer reviews of particular games. I actually discovered him through the “Oh... Oh my. Video Games” thread on the TV Tropes forums, where he did a two-part review of notorious failboat Drake Of The 99 Dragons (2003, Xbox). He is also doing a cool retrospective on Dragon Ball Z console and handheld games.

Filmnstuff: Review channel. Does expressive reviews of eight and 16-bit games, and reviews of “Stupid Boss Fights” and “Levels from Hell” for those games. On the other hand, he also does reviews of bosses from games that he actually likes. NSFW due to language.

Kikoskia: An Adorkable British LPer who I discovered when looking up stuff on You Tube for Rise Of The Robots (multiplatform). He does LPs of longer games, but I prefer his bite-sized “Let's Quickly Play (insert title here)”. I recommend his LQP of the Sega Genesis Terminator game.

Stan Burdman: Review channel. Does reviews of classic and modern games that he does and doesn't like, with a sense of humor. Be forewarned that his early reviews are kind of... bad.
