XVII: A Costly Recapture

I'm probably going to take a break when I'm finished with this trip, but I hope to continue soon. Who knows, if I decide to get the bike trainer, I may continue with the audiobook.

John hurries back to the palace, the courtyard is packed with people, as are the first floors, but that's not a problem for him, he just jumps to the third floor and sneaks in.

Tal Hajus is a Fat Bastard. Gross and depraved, he doesn't seem to have the virtues of even the green Martians.

  • One wonders how he became and how he stays king? Tradition? Vetinari Paradox? No one feels strong enough to hold the throne after an overthrow?

He dismisses his court so that he can go I Have You Now, My Pretty with Dejah and Sola. But mostly Dejah. Poor Sola, always a wallflower.

  • Tar Tarkas is last to go, and he's glaring daggers at Tal Hajus. John wishes he could tell him Sola was his daughter, it would end Tal Hajus' reign in a snap.

With this sentiment in mind, he leaps down and smashes Tal Hajus in the jaw, knocking him out. Can't deny Tar Tarkas the revenge he's awaited for forty years.

They flee, but without the supplies they planned to take. Then they get lost. Then the hunting party spots them. John sends the other two ahead while he holds off the hunting party, until he is subdued.

  • A chieftan spots them with a telescope, and John shoots him. I hope that wasn't Tar Tarkas. Or this isn't a Uriah Gambit.
