Released in Japan on December 14, 2001 as Battle Network Rockman.EXE 2 and in North America on June 17, 2002 for the Game Boy Advance, Megaman Battle Network 2 is the second installment of the fourth series in Capcom’s Megaman franchise, which eschews the conventional robot-oriented setting of the Megaman franchise for a society focused on cyberspace and the worldwide web.

The prior game, Megaman Battle Network (hereafter referred to as Battle Network 1) laid down a foundation for future games to work off of. Battle Network 2 did that job admirably, greatly streamlining and honing much of the gameplay, introducing numerous new elements that would go on to become part of the series’s staples, and overall providing a much deeper, meatier experience. Despite the fact that some of its aesthetics still look a little dated and there are still a few systems that are discarded from later games, Megaman Battle Network 2 is still considered today to be one of the best entries in the series.

This liveblog will basically be a continuation of the one I did of the first game, which can be found here. As a result there may be a few instances of Late-Arrival Spoiler sprinkled here and there, and I won’t go into the mechanics as in-depth as I did previously unless there are new or altered ones. Regardless though I will strive to play this game as completely as I can. Battle Network games are surprisingly deep in the gameplay department, and this one is obviously no exception.

The game’s main cast:

Lan Hikari and Megaman.EXE

The main operator-Navi duo of the series. Lan is a fifth-grader with an aptitude for Net Battles and a disinterest in anything even remotely academic. Megaman is the more serious of the pair, and is unique among Navis in that he is programmed with human DNA, specifically, the DNA of Lan’s deceased twin brother Hub Hikari.

Yuuchiro Hikari

Lan’s father, and one of the world’s most preeminent scientists. He is an expert on Net technology and, when available, is the go-to guy for whenever Lan and Megaman need technical support.

Mayl Sakurai and Roll.EXE

Lan’s kindly next door neighbor. Her Navi Roll emphasizes support and recovery, with Mayl providing Lan with her Navi chip.

Dex Oyama and Gutsman.EXE

The largest and most brash kid in Lan’s class, but also a very loyal friend. He’s always eager to challenge Lan and Megaman to a Net Battle against his Navi Gutsman…even if he can never win.

Yai Ayanokoji and Glyde.EXE

The young, eight-year-old daughter of rich company executives, Yai can often be condescending towards others. Her Navi Glyde acts as her personal butler.

Eugene Chaud and Protoman.EXE

An Official Net Battler, Chaud’s abrasive personality couldn’t be any more opposite Lan’s. His Navi Protoman specializes in high-speed, precise swordsmanship.

And yes, I did start this blog today because it's the Battle Network series's twelfth anniversary. Hard to believe that this game is over a decade old now.

Heh, not quite the same, but they recycled the basic setup of this part of the game as an early-game event in BN 5.
