Character picks up the phone and instead of just saying hello, gives a joke greeting or a funny way of answering. Maybe they pretend to be somebody else, or a business, or maybe they just say confusing things for their own amusement.

Can occur as a Running Gag.

Not sure if this counts:

Web Animation:

  • In the "Marzipan's Answering Machine" segment of Homestar Runner, each installment begins with a different idiosyncratic voicemail greeting by Marzipan for her answering machine. A lot of these are not intended by her to be funny, but often are anyway, poking fun at Marizpan's hippie personality. E.g.
    Hi, this is Marzipan.
You leave me a message, and I'll leave you with an abstract though:
Is a penguin a bird or a duck?
