Sometimes, people are found of depicting the setting of the show creatively. Whenever supernatural or weird stuff are involved like magic or fantastic science etc., they want it to act strange in a clever fashion. One of those ways is making the reality the characters exist act like textiles.

The setting that surrounds the characters can be torn by sharp objects, formed from woven pictures, folded into Hammerspace or held as a tangible object.

Examples:

Live-Action TV

  • In Seijuu Sentai Gingaman, Space Pirate Shelinda orders an invasion of the Ginga Forest. When she discovers it's protected by a magical barrier, she easily solves this by cutting the forest illusion and throwing it away like a rag.

Western Animation

  • In Courage the Cowardly Dog, Courage and his owners are forced to become roommates to a snowman who fled his home because of global warming. Courage solves this by flying to the North Pole and mends the gigantic tear in the sky using Muriel's sewing tools.
  • In MAD, a short gag involves a man asking a hot dog vendor for a hot dog with everything. The vendor rips out the setting besides the two and puts it on the hot dog.
  • In the Phineas and Ferb episode 'Wizard of Odd', when Candance wakes up in Patchkinland, she suspects Phineas and Ferb are involved. The duo reveal themselves by pulling the background like a backdrop.

The expression "fabric of time in space" is often used metaphorically. This is when they use it literally.

How about Fabric Of Reality as a more concise trope name?

The name Fabric Of Time And Space made me think of the actual concept in physics that spacetime can be bent in a manner similar to fabric, creating gravity wells. I was momentarily confused when I read the description and it wasn't talking about that. I agree that Fabric Of Reality is a better name.

Compare Breaking The Fourth Wall.

  • In Kirbys Epic Yarn, the Patch Land and its inhabitants are made of cloth and textiles. As such Kirby (who becomes yarnified in this game) can use the fabric of the world for easier traveling, such as sewing a separated land together.

Thirding Fabric Of Reality. Clearer, more concise and witty.

Corrected some spelling errors and a syntax error.

A Reality Warper may manipulate reality this way.

Film

  • Doctor Whiskers energizes the Spike, which tears a hole between the Cool World and the human world. Doc can even expand this opening with his bare hands! He's able to venture into the human world through this reality-fabric rip, and likewise imports Frank Harris into the Toon Town that is the Cool World.

Touhou: Yukari Yakumo's ability to manipulate boundaries most often manifests as ribboned gashes in reality (called gaps) that lead into a purple dimension filled with eyes that function asa Cool Gate, allowing her to be in multiple places at once, travel instantly to wherever she wents, send runaway trains barreling at people... Despite being broken as hell, this is nowhere near the full extent of her ability, as she can manipulate just about anything that can be considered to have a boundary (life/death, past/present/future, illusion/reality...).
