How do we know they're evil? They're in black SUVs... and tailgating.
More episodes of Cinemasins than we care to count.

Need an easy way to show that the villains are on the move, approaching the heroes? Simply show them on the road. But how do you show that these are villains on the move? Easy enough, put them in a bunch of black SUVs with windows tinted black following each other in a single file. Maybe throw in some sweeping aerial shots to show movement, but right here is a recipe for an ominous convoy that's on its way to mess people up. Possibly throw in a handful of Faceless Goons on motorcycles to round out the convoy.

It makes for a striking visual and easy shorthand to inform viewers of who is on the move even if we don't know who is actually in the cars, even though there's always a bit of Fridge Logic about how they never hit traffic and manage to follow each other so easily.

Please don't hat this, as it's obviously not ready for launch. But I've had an idea for this trope for a while and figured I'd get it out there so that others can comment on it and names as I gradually mine examples.

I am not sure about this one. A convoy of black SU Vs can also be a sign of a security detail transporting a VIP who might be a good guy and must be protected from an ambush.

  • In Logan Donald Pierce and the Transigen agents pull up to Logan's farm to capture Laura in black vehicles, complete with gun-toting Mooks standing in the back.

If anyone wants to improve the entry description they can. It's been a while since I've seen Logan so I don't recall the exact details.

Race To Witch Mountain: Yet another sign that the Men In Black are supposed to be the bad guys (as if the fact leader Robert Burke is Large And In Charge and very visibly a smug Inspector Javert) is the fact that the times we see the group moving around on a road (including trying to intercept the protagonists as they move around on a taxi), it's a single file of black SU Vs that is racing above the speed limit.

For when a Black Helicopter fleet would be too ostentatious, or else outside your production budget.

^^^ As written, Van In Black is about single vehicles, usually being used for surveillance. This is about multiple vehicles in a convoy. Once this is launched, any examples that are actually this trope can be moved to it.

Film - Live Action

  • Twister. The corporate-sponsored crew of meteorologists (led by the arrogant, rude sleazeball Dr. Jonas Miller) is competing with the protagonists to discover the secrets of tornado aerodynamics. They ride around in black SUVs in a single file line.
  • Resident Evil Apocalypse. When the Umbrella Corporation decides to rescue some of its employees from zombie-threatened Raccoon City, they send a convoy of black SUVs traveling in a tight single file line.

  • Deep Impact: One of the first hints that reporter Jenny Lerner is on to a much bigger story than she thinks is when a convoy of black saloons (this was a mostly pre-SUV era movie) boxes her in on the highway and rams her off the road to kidnap her and take her to The President.
